"Work your way through a long list of mezcals at Sabina Mezcaleria, a rare Boston bar dedicated to the smoky spirit derived from agave plants. For newcomers to mezcal, the bar stocks a wide range of types to sample and get familiar with; there’s also a variety of mezcal-based cocktails to try. Plan to stay for a while — the subterranean spot is also a full-service Mexican restaurant, and it’s excellent." - Erika Adams, Eater Staff

"Sabina is the newest Mexican addition to the Newbury restaurant scene and is Boston’s first mezcaleria. It’s a strong date-night spot, with an extensive list of mezcals to try and plates that feature ingredients from across the country that are lesser-seen in Boston, including rich huitlacoche and chipotle-roasted grasshoppers. The churros and flan con dulce de leche for dessert are not to be missed." - Anna Darrow

"Sabina Mezcaleria — from the same folks behind next-door taco shop La Neta and longstanding Mexican restaurant El Centro in the South End — boasts an expansive mezcal list that is, of course, the main draw, but the accompanying food menu, highlighting ingredients lesser-seen in Boston’s Mexican restaurant scene, is also worth seeking out. Order empanadas oozing with cheese and smoky huitlacoche, guacamole topped with chipotle-roasted grasshoppers, and bright ceviches served with saucer-sized taro chips." - Erika Adams, Nathan Tavares

Quite excited to try Sabina as heard good things about it since it opened. However, I feel like she is a little… quite not there yet. All cocktails are good, and what is amazing is that they are able to make most of their cocktails (if not all) non-alcoholic. I think its a good place to have cocktails, but not a meal. A lot of their dishes are just not there and a few have potential. If you dare try the dishes, the camarones roca (shrimp) would be a good one but less sauce, the cuadrito de lechon also good and the chicharone de arrachera. Please skip the tamal, perhaps they need to remove it from their menu altogether. It was just disappointing, not worth the tummy space or the calories.

Overall, I thought the Sabina Mezcaleria was a good experience and conveniently located on Newbury Street. Our party was seated outdoors, which had very nice tables and chairs. There were a lot of drink and food options. Everything was sharable; however, one issue was the portion size and specificity of the menu listing out which plates contained one item to share versus multiple items. For example, the crispy soft-shell taco only contains one taco. The patatas bravas were quite small portion compared to other similar restaurants. The mini tostadas de atun were actually the same size as esquite tostada; and both contained 3 tostadas, but are labelled differently. The flavors of the dishes were quite good and after ordering 5-6 plates for a party of 3, it was filling. But the total price was high, including the smaller cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages. If partaking non-alcoholic options, I recommend the house made lemonade over the mineral lemonade, which is the same size, except a portion of it is just sparkling water. The service could be more attentive, but there were many tables that all got seated at once. Overall, this is a nice place for a date or if you're feeling peckish. A bit pricey, but so are many different restaurants on Newbury St.

Food was underwhelming but very interesting. Soft shelled crab taco was pretty tasty but the guacamole tasted too sour. Drinks were very good, food is definitely catered as light snacks alongside drinks. Atmosphere was very pleasant both inside and outside. Come here for drinks not food!

Was pleasantly surprised by this little Mexican gem on Newbury Street. I enjoyed everything I tried, and the dishes were atypical and creative with spices leaning towards Asian cuisine. The tuna tostada was tasty with some hints of soy sauce and the octopus was tender and had a hint of Indian spices. Our margaritas were also quite fresh and well balanced. The patio was really nice on a beautiful night, and the bar inside was fun as well. I would come back again to try a few other dishes and certainly for their margaritas!

Small tapas menu, but everything is excellent. Highly recommend the beef tacos, the soft shell crab taco, the sopes and the corn tostados. Mezcalitas are brilliant, especially the tamarind and an wide range of tequilas and mezcals

The picture is what they bring to the table as you sit down. Nothing like tasteless, stale, passive agression to start a meal. We ordered cocktails first. The Spicy mezcalita was so bad, we decided not to order anything beyond the first round of drinks. Couldn't taste anything other than salt. It was objectively , to everyone at my table who tried it, garbage. And the waiter managed to spill it down my leg as he was serving it. They are lucky I tipped on principal. This place isn't an award winning mezcal bar, it's a comedy club. Because what they serve is an overpriced joke. It's also so dark you will trip down the stairs coming in from a sunny day. Good luck if you choose to try it.

If I could describe this place with one word it would be DISAPPOINTING. I booked this place as a surprise for my fiancé for our engagement celebration and it was the worst idea. It had great reviews and the pictures look good as well, but the pictures could not be further from reality. The ambiance is ok, the cocktails are good (I’m a mezcal lover) but the food is disgusting. I’ve been to Oaxaca many times before and this tasted nothing like anything I’ve had there, in fact it tasted like nothing at all. My fiancé described it as the Mexican version of a Chinese food place that reheats frozen food (yikes)! We had the soft-shell crab taco that tasted like deep fried cardboard, the ceviche was just some seafood that was overpowered by the amount of soy sauce they put into it. The pulpo in chile pasilla was something they microwaved and the ribeye tacos looked nothing like the pictures or videos they advertised, they were overcooked with no guacamole and zero flavor. Please don’t waste your time here. There are significantly better Mexican places with solid and authentic food that won’t break the bank. PSA: there’s just one bathroom for a 50 people place.

I was really excited to try this place as a mezcal lover but was kind of disappointed across a lot of factors. 1. Atmosphere - spaces on Newbury are hard but outside of the bar shelving, the rest felt okay at best. There was almost a spotlight shining down on each table which felt like I was on display, there was a wannabe “instagrammable” neon by the entrance. Felt forced and not well executed. 2. Food - I didn’t order much to be fair but the two things I tried were all underwhelming. The ceviche had this odd kick of spice to it which tasted like they threw in some raw chili powder on top to spice it up. 3. Drinks - the reason we came here. The mezcalitas tasted like juice. I got no mezcal flavor. Their cocktail list is short and not impressive. The only thing I did like was the mezcal flight which was the only redeeming quality. Shame I was really hoping for more

Yelp
We popped in for a quick drink before a dinner reservation, so this review is for the bar and cocktails only. We ordered the Nights in Oaxaca and Dos con Panocha, both of which had great presentation and were delicious. While they didn't exactly disguise the mezcal flavor, I would say both drinks were relatively approachable for someone who is less familiar with or thinks they don't like mezcal. I thought the Dos con Panocha was particularly interesting, if you slowed down and really tasted it was very complex. The service was quick and friendly, the bar and drinks were super cute, and the food coming out looked tasty. Hope to come back and try some more mezcal-forward cocktails next time!

Yelp
Really great vibe on the inside! The service was on point. Food was really flavorful Corn tostada (5/5) Beet salad (4.5/5) Sopa (4.5/5) Ribeye tacos(4/5) Churro with ice cream (4/5) Gin cocktail (4/5)

Yelp
Came here with reservations on a Saturday evening for an early dinner and we were seated quite quickly. The place wasn't particularly busy when we came so it was pretty quiet which led to a nice ambiance overall. The tables were clean but also tightly packed together; the hightop we were at was pushed against a wall which led to feeling a bit cramped. The menu had a good mix of foods, all pretty expensively priced honestly. The portions were a on the smaller size given the price point, but being on Newbury, that's to be expected. The food itself all tasted very solid - I enjoyed the guac and tacos as well as the ceviche which all came with more filling/substance than expected, however things were disproportionate in terms of chips to topping ratio. There was a surprising amount of guac left as well as ceviche compared to the carb source provided. Nonetheless, they were all pretty small and we were left feeling a bit hungry after ordering everything. Overall, I probably wouldn't opt to return on my own accord, but I would be fine coming if it were someone else's choice. The food was decent and the service was all right, it's just the cramped tables and pricy menu that left a bit to be desired. Nonetheless, nice meal and I'm glad I got to try it at least!

Yelp
Sabina is a must-visit! The food is always great, but the standout feature is the friendly customer service. We love sitting at the bar to catch all the action. It's the perfect spot for a fun, energetic vibe. If you're a tequila lover, this place is perfect! They offer a diverse selection that will impress any aficionado.

Yelp
Very cool vibe with velvet seating and dark wood. Loved the small plates menu - the smoked fish quesadilla was incredible! Great drinks, especially if you like mezcal. Friendly staff and good service.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this restaurant on a Friday night walking around Newbury Street. There was a bit of a crowd but luckily they had a table available for us within 10 minutes. The vibe of this place was very cool and trendy, definitely somewhere I would have grabbed drinks before a fun night out in my 20s. The food overall was pretty good, mostly bite sized sharable dishes. We ordered the corn tamal, soft shell crab taco, pork, octopus, and mini rib eye tacos. Everything was nicely presented and flavorful but our faves were the tamal and rib eye tacos. For drinks I got the coconut marg which was perfect! Such a cute spot to check out!

Yelp
4.5-5 - I will be coming back! Very welcomed addition to Newbury/Back bay. Chapulines (grasshoppers) - light crunchy well seasoned snack. Guacamole- needs more lime/salt for my taste but otherwise was good. I'll probably get the cotija cheese one next time. Camarones/Shrimp - SO good! Has a nice kick. Octopus - never had it prepared this way. I usually have it grilled. It was hard to tell it was octopus, but the sauce was good. Squash blossom soup - YES! Delicious!! Mini sopes - YUM YUM YUM Soft shell crab taco - never had soft shell crab so don't have a good reference for this. It was decent but somewhat underwhelming. LOVE the mezcal selection and so great that you can get a Mezcal flight (waitress was very helpful in helping us choose). Also had tamarindo mezcal cocktail which was DELICIOUS. Cannot wait to try the rest of the menu.

Yelp
What a treat! We had been wanting to come here for a while, as it's T accessible and right on Newbury St. We made a reservation for a Tuesday evening a few days in advance. When you walk in, the restaurant is small and nicely decorated. A full service bar and about 10-12 tables for seating. Our waiter was great, gave us recommendations for drinks (especially the Mezcal, which is what they're known for) and the sharable tapas. Everything tasted delicious, from the tacos to the sopes! Highly recommend as a fun date night or girls night. I'd stop in just to have a yummy drink at the bar. Definitely a fun, new spot with good food and drinks!

Yelp
I am so impressed and happy that this restaurant has opened. It's easily one the best places to eat on Newbury Street. For example, I usually don't like the smoky, lingering taste of mezcal but even I couldn't stop drinking the Nights in Oaxaca cocktail. Equally as tantalizing were the foods. The ceviche was fresh and deliciously seasoned. The mini rib eye tacos were tasty as they were beautiful to behold. The Huitlacoche empanada is so satisfying. Stellar job with the new opening!

Yelp
Amazing! Our bartender, Naomi, was so knowledgeable and friendly. The food was also amazing. The prawns! Ceviche! Guacamole! Empanada! And a cocktail that I would never order was delicious. Thank you!

Yelp
We came across this place during our visit to Boston. It was very close to our hotel. The restaurant was very nice and the service was excellent. The menu items were unique. The food was flavorful and simply enjoyable to consume.

Yelp
VERY BAD service. The webpage clearly says that they close at 11pm on Sundays. We got there at 8:30pm, and they kicked us out by 9:30pm with the excuse that "we were the only table left so today they were closing at 9:30pm". they didn't even let my friend finish his dish and they refused to give us the contact of their boss. Very unpleasant experience and rude staff.

Yelp
Food: 5/5 The food itself tastes so good! Very authentic! It's probably one of the better places on newbury. I ordered a blood orange martini, which was decent, but I tried my friend's tamarind mezcal drink, which was really good (coming from a person that doesn't normally like mezcal at all). The Lechon was our favorite dish of the night. They also gave us something as service that night [Dec 1], not sure what it was, but was extremely delicious. Flan was also amazing and a must-have! Service: 5/5 The waitress was really nice in accommodating my friend and I on changing our seats. Shout out to the service very thankful! She was very nice about it even though they looked quite packed. Although the host didn't seem to be happy about the change. Ambiance: 4/5 The ambiance is great, for the most part, very modern. However, they really need to do something about that middle slab of wood between the pillars. My one complaint is this because it is difficult and uncomfortable for people who want to eat and order a lot of dishes. It's more of a bar type of feel, but even the actual bar space is bigger than that slab of wood between the two pillars. Overall 4.5/5

Yelp
Unexpected pleasant enjoyable experience where I almost left because I'm a free o drinker. The food and service will bring me back.

Yelp
Food was dynamite. We ordered 6 things and they all were on point. They were so good I forgot to get photos! Temperature, seasoning, freshness, etc- all of it knocked it out of the park. Our server was super nice and knowledgeable, drinks were well balanced and fresh. I had a tamarind marg with Tajin and it was the perfect balance of sweet, salty, sour and a little kick of spice. Def coming back

Yelp
We recently dined at a Sabina with a group of eight, which for a small place it's very nice that they made the expanded reservation work. From the moment we walked in, the ambiance was inviting. We started with a round of multiple different Mezcal cocktails. All were excellent especially the coconut marg and tamarind one. Each dish we tried was a testament to authentic flavors - almost everything on the menu was excellent. The service was attentive and efficient, making our large group feel well taken care of.

Yelp
Discovered a hidden gem in newbury st. Their food and service are so good!! I love the ceviche so much it pairs perfectly with the taro chips. Will be coming here again!

John C.

Yelp
Great selection of mezcal though bartender couldn't tell us much about the different mezcal options which was rather disappointing. Would recommend for drinks and snacks only as the ambiance is nice though food wasn't great and wouldn't recommend for dinner. Ceviche was tasty, nicely flavored though fishy and not very fresh which was a letdown.

Kidd L.

Yelp
It was aesthetically great. Not sure if they do this every night but there was a band playing salsa music, which a lot of the times I wouldn't mind, but the space is incredibly small and it just over powers the place. It was very hard to have a conversation because the music was too loud. To the point where I felt like I had to scream just so we can understand each other. As far as food we only got 2 things, the guacamole was great but the corn tamal was too salty so I wouldn't recommend that. Drinks were great though!

Conor B.

Yelp
We got 2 apps and mezcalitas. The drinks were amazing and the bartender was very knowledgable of the history of Mezcal. Highly recommend as the food was amazing as well.

Alex C.

Yelp
It's a great time! Fantastic mezcal selection. We came in knowing very little about mezcal but Luis led us through the journey explaining the different types and preparations and we discovered incredible flavors. The value is incredible! We will definitely be back to try more mezcal and their food too!
