Best Restaurants and Shops for Pierogi in Detroit and Southeast Michigan | Eater Detroit

"For nearly 15 years, this family-oriented restaurant has served up a taste of Old World Poland Downriver, offering a simple and straightforward Polish menu. The pierogi offerings include potato-cheddar, sauerkraut, or sweet farmer’s cheese, the perfect complement to the hearty and satisfying stuffed cabbage, kielbasa, and other authentic Polish dishes. The owner’s family immigrated to America from Poland in the early 1990s, and that Polish pride is evident on every plate." - Dorothy Hernandez

Delicious home-cooked Polish dishes and family style serving. We were served by a few different people asking us if we had everything we needed. I felt like I was at grandma’s house. Delish food, great prices, and American-home style restaurant.

We were recommended to come here by a few people and we’re so glad we finally visited. Sabina’s is a cozy little Polish restaurant with the best pirogies and cabbage rolls you can find. Even my boys loved it!! And the cheesecake was outstanding! Flavours were perfect and everything was cooked perfectly. We will definitely be back!

Google
I have to say, they know what is good food, they know how to cook food. Dill Pickle soup, perfect amount of the creamy with a bit of sour. The sour cabbage? Don’t know the name, it’s fantastic. Most of the thing are “homemade”. comfort your stomach. Btw, home feeling warming service. I would like to give 6 star if allows.

Google
Very good experience with this place. Great food for a great price. I remember coming here as a kid and always thought the food was kind of bland. But when I came in here a few weeks ago, the food was very flavorful I ordered the stuffed cabbage and city chicken with a side of sour kraut and mashed potatoes. It tasted fresh and homemade. I also had some dill pickle soup which was quite good. While I don't usually get dessert while dining out, I ordered 3 crepes of each flavor and they were delicious. They have a variety of daily specials. Every meal and side is also very reasonably priced. The atmosphere is kind of a diner vibe and can feel very crowded at times. Keep in mind that this place is a family restaurant and does not serve alcohol. Overall, this place has a variety of polish food and is all very reasonably priced

We visited first day open back from a month of vacation time. Full house on Tuesday afternoon, many dozens of take out orders while we dined. They have a Mega Deal $10 menu with many choices 😄. Wife had the $10 Polish Meatballs, Pierogi and Cucumber Salad 😋💯 OMG. I had the $12 Smoked Polish Sausage n City Chicken 😋💯, outstanding Delicious Wowed added a 2nd link. Special request ask Sabina to slice n grill the Kielbasa marvelous, I added Mustard to one and Horseradish to other. Thanks for this Ms Sabina she always makes me Happy 😁. We started with are all time favorite Polish Mushrooms Soup mega bowl only $2 with meal purchase. This place 50 percent cheaper than any other Polish Restaurant in Michigan. They just named Best Polish Restaurant by Only in your State, Congratulations well Deserved 17 years now. #sabinaspolishrestaurant #polishrestaurant #polishfood #kielbasa #citychickens #pierogi #lowprices #downriverfriendseat

Google
Excellent Polish fare! Dinner for 6 @ $100. Kielbasa smoked/fresh; salad; potato pancakes; stuffed cabbage, mushroom soup, pierogi, sour croute, bread and butter. Great service from Lisa! It is a to do meal and close to DTW!

Google
Simple family restaurant w fresh made food. Your not going to get plates of food for cheap. You get what you pay for. They have smaller combos good for lunch and larger ones for dinner. Great service. Plenty of space for sitting.

Google
I've been eager to try Sabina's after hearing rave reviews for many years! The building is adorable, old fashioned diner style but with more seating than you'd expect. Today I stopped in for the combination plate and every bite was fantastic. The highlights for me were the mashed potatoes and the kielbasa. Do pay extra for bacon and onions on your pierogies, it's worth it! Great coffee and soups too! Super friendly service and the prices aren't bad. We'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Really tight space on a busy evening. Our guest really enjoyed his meal. I was a bit disappointed in mine for the first time. Normally I enjoy the meals as true comfort food.

Yelp
Truly the best Polish food in the area! We consistently get takeout from Sabina's - at least on a monthly basis. Our family loves the kielbasa, stuffed cabbage, city chicken, and pierogis. Our order never changes, although I'm sure everything else is equally delicious! We've never dined in, but the service with to-go is wonderful. They have a great process figured out and it's very efficient. The staff is always super nice as well!

Yelp
Food is always delicious. But the last 2 times I went there it was close to 7:00 pm, one time a little after. We were informed they are closed, chairs on tables and mopping floor I asked are you closed it got quiet as a library and eventually a waitress said I'm sorry we are closed. As I'm standing by the door that clearly states they are open till 8:00 pm. Like I said this has happened twice and I don't live close. So 2 wasted days. Next time I'll just keep driving and go to Hamtramck, at least I know they' ll be open.

Yelp
I love me some polish potatoes and cheese Pierogies! My love for polish food began 20 years ago when I discovered Polka in Eagle Rock. The couple who owned it with their daughter were the sweetest and absolutely the most beautiful family. So sad they sold the business and went back to their motherland. Anyhoo, my bf had work in Detroit so I followed him for a quick turnaround vacation. (I really wanted to eat spaghetti at moms). I didn't realize the big Polish population Detroit has. I did a quick yelp search and decided to eat here because of all the stellar reviews. I love how the bread is individually wrapped (no germ spreading here). Excellent customer service: the hospitality we received from the waitress when she found out we were out of town and this was our first meal after landing, she offered us a free dessert to go :). Pickle soup is exactly what the taste is lol, I liked it but didn't love it, I should have gotten a cup. We also shared a sampler which the waitress recommended and said it was a good size portion for us. The cherry cheesecake - bomb!! All their desserts are homemade! Cute little restaurant that packs a punch. I can see why its always busy! Until next time!

Yelp
The food is very good. They have a good variety of polish food. The food is always fresh and tasty. The staff is very friendly. It gets crowded at lunch.

Yelp
The parking lot isn't big and the ambiance of the restaurant is alright but you go to a Polish restaurant for the food and you won't be disappointed at Sabina's. Excellent food. I really wish this place was closer. Service is consistently great.

W W.

Yelp
A local recommended it and we were not disappointed. Had the small combo with kielbasa and potato pancakes for a late lunch. Nothing fancy, just good Polish food. Will definitely be back the next time I'm in town.

Carol P.

Yelp
We waited quite a while getting our order taken and then the food was poor in appearance and taste. Then we waited to pay while the cashier and a customer had a lengthy personal conversation. Came highly recommended, but we've been to better Polish places.

Yelp
Lunch with friends, great food, and great value, staff friendly & helpful, I love the cabbage soup and pierogies, also purchased a carry-out of stuffed cabbage dinner for Mom, which she enjoyed very much.

Thomas C.

Yelp
Outstanding Polish cuisine! Homemade and delicious dishes like Busia makes! Mushroom soup is so good! The combination plate is amazing and has generous portions stuffed cabbage, pierogi, sausage, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes! Great prices too! Fast and friendly service. A definite destination for a great meal!

Sandra S.

Yelp
The ambiance is like sitting at someone's kitchen table, very close to ten other kitchen tables of diners. However, the food is amazing - homemade Polish cooking at its best.
google avatar

Andrew M.

Yelp
Have not been here in awhile. Still fantastic! Had a great Polish combination meal with a huge bowl of chicken noodle soup (bowl of soup is $2.50 with any entree as of 9.20.23). Outstanding and very filling meal!

Yelp
If you are looking for the best polish food in Michigan. Hey if you are in the area drop on in to Sabina's. Note this place is closed on Mondays. Try the all city kitchen with polish sausage it quit good. The service I like because I am always impressed how they don't write down their orders. This place is very family oriented so bring the kids. Just down good time eating here. That is all. Chief Look at the past for learning but don't look for the future. Just let it come to you.

Yelp
Great polish restaurant check out in downriver. It's been in Melvindale for many many years. The food always comes out so fast and the servers are constantly on top of checking in on their guests. It's a small and cozy environment.

Rose F.

Yelp
Sabina's is a small "hole in the wall", said lovingly. The food is the best Polish food. The prices are reasonable considering today's restaurant prices. I do wish they had their original smoked polish sausage, which was thicker and juicier, then it changed to a drier sausage, which wasn't very good. Now it is a Polish sausage hotdog. Yes, I have been going here forever and keep going back. The meal is still great overall. The portions are generous. The staff is great, friendly, and fast. Considering the restaurant is on the small side, they keep it moving. Never had a meal I didn't enjoy. Head on out, guys.

Jeffrey B.

Yelp
I love everything about Sabinas! The atmosphere, the people that work there, and every food that I've ate there, it's the first place I've ever tried dill pickle soup at, and I'm hooked!!!
google avatar

Barb H.

Yelp
Sabina's is authentic Polish food! Their food is better than what I have had in Hamtramck! The serving sizes are huge and the prices are great! Beware, the meatballs on the combo plate are a meal all by themselves! We love Sabina's!!! Also, the service is too notch. The servers help one another out so you have what you need before you need it!
google avatar

Alonzo G.

Yelp
Best polish food in the area, the prices are great and their daily specials even better
google avatar

Deanna O.

Yelp
We have been wanting to come here for a long time but it always seemed it was on a Sunday when they were closed. Well we finally made it and I must say I wish I had made the effort sooner! The wait staff were helpful and friendly but the food stole the show. The prices were very reasonable and the food freshly made Polish cuisine. Great experience all around. Highly recommend this for authentic Polish food.
google avatar

Heidi P.

Yelp
Sabina's has fantastic flavor. Don't make the same mistake That I made and come here for lunch expecting to have a productive rest of your day. I had to nearly be rolled out I was so filled with perogies and kielbasa. The dill pickle soup was absolutely fantastic and I can't wait to come back. Prices were fair for homemade food.

Yelp
If you are looking for authentic, home-style, Polish comfort food, this is definitely the place. Two of us ate here on a Friday night around 6:30 pm and the place was packed with locals. They work the tables quickly and we were seated in a few minutes. The service was very friendly and attentive. We elected to have the combination plate. It was loaded with flavor and goodness! Smoked kielbasa, stuffed cabbage, meatballs, pierogi, mashed potatoes, kapusta, and green beans! The stuffed cabbage was the highlight in my opinion. We topped it off with an apple crumble for dessert. It was a great taste and value for the price. Apple Berry Crumb Cake Cabbage Rolls Combination Plate

Yelp
Excellent Polish food. I'm glad we stopped in to try this place. It looks kind of like a Coney Island set up and the waitresses are all very friendly. I would definitely recommend trying them out. I'd go back if ever in the area again.

Patricia O.

Yelp
Sabina's is a must stop for anyone in the downriver area. The food is delicious and authentic. The service is over and above, all wait staff is super friendly and Sabina herself is happy to accommodate any requests. It's like being in your own kitchen, warm and friendly. We can't say enough about the ambiance, food and service. It's always a must stop when in town. Highly recommend. Thanks Sabina's!
google avatar

Sam F.

Yelp
Love this place. Service is good but the food is great with generous portions at a very fair price. Not much parking but worth the short walk from the street where you can park.
google avatar

Karen H.

Yelp
YUMMM. Everything I tried here was delicious, but the melt-in-your-mouth city chicken was the highlight. dill pickle soup is also a must have! And the simple side salad was green and fresh (which you don't always see at diner-style/home type food). Our server, Tracy, was so friendly and attentive. We thought that we'd have a group of 11, but only 8 of us showed up (and all at different times). She was not annoyed at all and seemed happy to serve us. Our family had come in from FL and so we were boisterous, happy to be reunited...she was just very gracious and accommodating to all personality types and timelines. So grateful! Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Please please come here, such a gem of a restaurant. The staff (including Sabina!) are so hard working and nice, and they make some amazing food that takes you into Poland from Melvindale! Such comfort food for me, always craving the Golabki and pierogi! So good.
google avatar

Carly S.

Yelp
Good food and good prices but if you do not go early enough, they are usually sold out of the popular foods such as their chicken. Would go back.

Dan L.

Yelp
Great food good service and great prices. Love the place lol be back. I had to city chicken was fantastic.
google avatar

Madison L.

Yelp
i got a reuben with fries, it was very good! also, the service was fantastic! typically every time i come here, it's extremely packed with people, but the employees are always patient and kind despite the overwhelming amount of things going on which is really admirable. thank you sabina's!
google avatar

Chris P.

Yelp
Excellent! Great service and the food is very good too! I am Polish, so I gravitated right to all the Polish and it is soo good!! I must say! Sabina's also has a menu of other things that I must and need to explore! If you are are looking for an old school diner, Polish and just great hospitality, this is the place to come! I can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Yelp
I have been here a few times with my colleagues and my old boss. My old boss would always get their city chicken, which I have never understood why they call it that at all. I have tried their dill soup, which isn't bad. I have tried a few bites of their pan fried kielbasa, which wasn't too bad. I like their potato pierogi best, always get a half order, they are packed with potato and yummy. Their potato pancake isn't too bad either, must eat it with the apple sauce for sure or sour cream, not a bad condiment either the pancakes either. I always like to order a side of kraut, because at a polish restaurant, that's my best salad option.
google avatar

Ron R.

Yelp
So when u walk in u can tell it's a small place not alot of room but it does pack house. The staff is very friendly and the homemade breads they brought out were very good so I was expecting the food to be great as well. I ordered the combination plate which came with 2 pierogies, stuffed cabbage, kielbasa, mashed potato, corn and Sauerkraut. Know I must say for $10.95 this combination plate fills you up but if you are looking for phenomenal polish food this isnt it but you cant beat the price. The food was quite bland, it had no flavor I literally had to add salt & pepper to everything for some type of flavor. Dont get me wrong I liked the atmosphere but I am polish and I love polish food but this didnt meet my expectations.im giving it a 3 star mainly because of staff and not the food.
google avatar

Joseph G.

Yelp
Excellent polish food. I tried the potato pancakes, freak kielbasa and a the chicken noodle soup. All were excellent. My wife tried the stuffed cabbage , potato, pierogi and cabbage soup, service by Tracy was excellent. They would of received 5 Stars if it not for the short red hair, condensing cashier with a sarcastic attitude. I hope it wasn't our color. Regardless we won't go back since our great waitress was also pulled from our table when we were almost done and a new one had to bring us our bill. Meantime Tracy was made to fold napkins by the counter. So I handed her the tip she deserved in person. Meanwhile, while cashing out with Karen, I told her I already paid the tip in cash when she asked if I wanted to put a tip on the credit card. To tell me "that was ok , I guess" and " you need to stand over here in a condescending voice was enough for us to change our mind of ever coming back.
google avatar

Cas G.

Yelp
Excellent Polish food! Even better service!! The sweet farm cheese pierogi was delicious with sauerkraut. Stuffed cabbage was very good also. This place is very busy, which should speak for the quality of their food and service.

Scott B.

Yelp
Food is good, local diner serving polish food. Service is good Ambiance - it's a local diner it's fine.
google avatar

Tshirt A.

Yelp
I had the cheese nalesniki for lunch and they were so good I could not stop! The restaurant is very cozy, clean and staffs were very nice. Food came fast. My crepes were just perfect portion and the price was very reasonable (3 for $6.50) for this homemade quality meal.
google avatar

Diana D.

Yelp
We try to get carry out from here at least once a month. They're ALWAYS busy. The food is always fresh, orders are always accurate. I get the polish combo and it's too Much food for one sitting! The city chicken and smoked sausage are also very good ! Love this place.

Pat M.

Yelp
We were in the area at Greenfield Village. The woman seated behind us on the train mentioned she worked here. Given that my wife is Polish we figured we would give it a try. The service was prompt and the staff was beyond friendly. The food was fantastic. I had the city chicken and stuffed cabbage combo. Best city chicken ever. The place is on the opposite side of town from where we live but we can easily see ourselves eating dinner here after a day at the Greenfield Village.
google avatar

Bruce C.

Yelp
Stopped in after a friend gave high praise for their polish food. Ordered a carry out and had the combination plate with a stuffed cabbage, smoked kielbasa, 2 meatballs, mashed potatoes, 2 pierogies, and green beans. Plenty of food for my wife and I. Everything was excellent but my favorite was the meatballs. I also picked up a dozen of frozen pierogies to go. It's a small dinner and parking can be challenging during busy times but I highly recommend Sabina's!
google avatar

Emma G.

Yelp
Our food was delicious! And being Polish I am very discerning about my cuisine. Sabina's did a great job. Super friendly service. Great value.
google avatar

DeAn S.

Yelp
Fantastic food. Great service, too. We had not eaten Polish cuisine and we're so glad to have experienced the first tastes here. We tried a variety of dishes. All were wonderful! Desserts too!
google avatar

Tammy D.

Yelp
Excellent food, service was also outstanding. Had golumpki and peirogis both were fantastic.

Gerald S.

Yelp
August 2, 23 sign on door says - do to unforeseen circumstances , will be closed till September . So i'd recommend calling in advance

Terreance C.

Yelp
Sabina's was on my list of places to try in 2023. I had the combination plate. It was delicious and enough for two meals. I ordered the Apple Berry Crumb Cake to take home. It was quite tasty and not too sweet. The staff is great. They are attentive and personable. Although it was my first time there, they made me feel at home like I was a frequent customer, which I plan to become.
google avatar

Ron M.

Yelp
Excellent Polish food. I live close and have been here several times. Never have I left hungry or dissatisfied. The food comes fast after you order and it is always hot. The prices are very reasonable. While it is not my grandmothers Polish food it is good and made with pride and care. The pierogi, kielbasa and city chicken are very good. Give it a try and enjoy.

Yelp
So good! Homemade pierogies and crapes with apricot filling were delicious! I've been thinking about going back ever since I left the last time. The service was great and quick. It's a family favorite for sure.

Kara E.

Yelp
Dill pickle soup is the best I have ever had. Small restaurant, great service pierogis and Sauerkraut great too

Laurie W.

Yelp
Good home style cooking for a great price! Great service, diner type atmosphere. It was a little out of the way, but worth the drive.
