We got a Mezcal Margarita, a Pineapple Margarita, the Shrimp and Crab Enchilada Special, and the Carnitas Estilo Michoacan. The Margaritas were good, very sweet. I didn't love the Enchiladas but they were unique. The Carnitas were good, but I was expecting them to be juicer. The sides everything came with were great. Loved the cheese and even the beans were toothsome and tasty. The chips and salsa were definitely home made. The Service was great. They checked in on us and gave us plenty of time while we figured out our orders. They bought us refills of chips and salsa as needed. We also asked for additional tortillas and cheese and we heard our waitress run straight to the cooks and verbally ask them for it instead of going to some kind of kiosk and letting a ticket print out for them. The outside and inside were clean, modern, and well decorated.

Excellent restaurant to dine on patio with your furry friend. Cuisine on the lighter side with good selection of salads 🥗. Recommend Azteca salad with grilled chicken. Kimmy gives 2 paws up.

We had an amazing experience at Sabor a Mexico! The food was incredibly fresh and flavorful—every bite tasted authentic and made with care. Our server, Jackie, was fantastic—attentive, friendly, and on top of everything. The service and atmosphere made the meal even better. Highly recommend if you’re looking for delicious, authentic Mexican food with outstanding service!

I have eaten in dozens of Mexican restaurants in Marin and Sonoma counties and I think this is the best of all. Delicious salsa. Great chips. They have lengua and they do it to perfection! Delicious margaritas. Reasonable prices.

🌮 A Hidden Gem for Authentic Mexican Flavors! 🌮 I just have to rave about Sabor A Mexico —this spot is an absolute gem in our neighborhood! From the moment you walk in, the aroma of fresh spices and sizzling goodness welcomes you like a warm hug. Every dish I’ve tried is packed with bold, authentic flavors, and you can truly taste the love and tradition in every bite. Whether it's their perfectly seasoned tacos, rich and hearty mole, or the freshest guacamole, everything is just chef’s kiss 💋✨. Beyond the incredible food, the service is just as amazing—friendly, attentive, and they make you feel like family. If you haven’t checked out Sabor A Mexico, do yourself a favor and go ASAP. You won’t regret it! 💯 📍 Located at: 1559 4th St, San Rafael CA 94901 ⭐ Must-Try: Enmoladas (chicken enchiladas smothered in mole sauce) 🆕 Must-Try: Wedge Salad (new to the menu and my new fav dish) 🍸 Must-Try: Passion Fruit Margarita (sweet, tangy and refreshing)

My first time visiting this Mexican restaurant for Mother’s Day’s dinner and honestly I feel that ti went beyond my expectations… and for sure I’ll come back

Google
Highly recommend if you are craving some authentic, delicious Mexican food. My husband and I loved our meal, the service, and venue. Immediately upon seating, you're provided free chips and salsa. The horchata and jamaica were both so rich and good, highly recommend adding one of these to your order. The taco plate was delicious, as was the mole enchilada platter, which felt like a well rounded meal with all the acutraments.

Google
Really enjoyed Margaritas and lunch here with family recently. The service was friendly and food was great. And their Instagram videos are beautiful. Check them out! I’m looking forward to my next visit.

Yelp
Took me long enough to get here as I'd been hearing great things about this place from neighbors, as it's in my hood. But I'm glad I finally did! Best chips and salsa, both are housemade. I've dined here about 5x in the past few months and I've had the nachos, beef fajitas, chicken tacos( which were very flavorful and a bit spicy) and my friend has just recently tried their mole sauce which he says is in his top 10. The atmosphere is festive at clean but most importantly... The staff! These folks are so attentive, sweet, accommodating and friendly with big smiles. I highly recommend!

Yelp
Found this place after yelping where to go for lunch after walking the Marin French Antique & Farmers Market - everything looked and sounded good so off we went. We arrived around 1pm on a Sunday and it was slightly busy inside but only waited about 10 min before getting seated. We were hangry and there were many different options on the menu including breakfast items (weekend only). We decided to try the following: - Queso Fundido Appetizer ($15.75) - wayyy to much oil for me and not enough chorizo = no flavor = no bueno! - Fajitas Steak & Chicken ($24) - sizzling hot and good portion size - Lamb Barbacoa Special 1lb ($55) - this also came in a half pound option but not enough flavor! - Mar y Tierra ($25) - again not enough flavor - Two Item Combo - Chicken Enchiladas w/red sauce ($18) - the sauce had a little spice to it and was pretty thick - Iced Tea and Sierra Mist ($3.75 ea) They brought out complimentary chips & salsa but it was such a small bowl, we devoured it quickly and asked for some more. Salsa was very good with just the right kick to it! It seemed like forever before the appetizer came out and it was fairly small. Then it took forever again before our lunch came out but finally we got to eat. We all agreed that the food was just ok (average) but sadly the service was definitely lacking! We did read in previous posts that service was sometimes slow but we didn't get checked on at all and we were there for 2 hours! Had to flag down each time for extra napkins, drink refills, more tortillas, to go boxes and finally the check. Also overheard the table next to us complaining about the long wait time as well.

Yelp
We took our family here for our daughter's birthday on Thursday early evening. As before, we had to wait for a host or hostess to be seated. There were 6 of us and we had reservations, but the table wasn't properly configured. The food was pretty good. Guacamole was great, tamales, enchiladas, and tacos were good, the chicken mole was excellent, the green salsa is to-die-for, but the beans were not up to par no matter how people ordered them. Service was also okay. I ordered a taco ala Carte and it was included on my son's plate. They didn't offer a second plate and only later brought a fresh taco for me when it was clear that we couldn't manage passing a soft taco down across several people. The restaurant wasn't crowded, which was nice as we could hear one another talk and it made for a comfortable dinner.

Yelp
Easily some of the best Mexican food in Marin. High quality ingredients, well prepared dishes (including some more traditional ones), and a vibey space to match. Service is friendly, easy going, and very efficient. Their cocktails are great - easy drinking and strong. The free chips and salsa are so great too! We'll be back many times - found a new favorite go-to.

Yelp
The food and service here are excellent! They have a Molay type salsa that is out of this world? I've never tasted anything like it. But very unfortunately, the owners have replaced all of the comfortable boutique lounge chairs with these inexpensive hard back hard seat, small wooden chairs! The entire character of the room Now seems so generic and uncomfortable where it used to be. Very unusual almost like going into someone's living room. People loved lounging around and all that comfortable furniture. The only place people were seated was the back sofa and the four comfortable chairs that still remain. I hope the Management realizes that they took the one cool and unusual thing about this place and just made it absolutely generic. Please bring back the seats that were so comfortable for people to sit in

Yelp
Place packed and lively on a Friday night. The tacos were delish!! But $5.00 for a WEE side of rice (which should have come with the plate IMHO). My $16 margarita was watery. I ordered it with fresh lime juice so that's probably why the up charge. Too much!! The server didn't do anything about it when I mentioned the watery issue. Just "sorry". So my five star rating of the past is going down to three. I'll be back but have a Margie before I go...
google avatar

Kevin L.

Yelp
Good food great taste. The meat is a little fatty so it takes away from the taste. Also the meat is covered in spice only, needs a bit more seasoning to steal my heart away.
google avatar

Lori G.

Yelp
After last week's successful chips and salsa snack run we decided to try more of the menu. We had the mole burrito and tamale, the chicken tamale with green sauce, and the shrimp and crab enchiladas. All were excellent. Beans too. We'll be back to try cocktails and tacos next!

Yelp
Wow! I had no idea this spot existed and so happy that my friend introduced me. The guava margarita is divine; that perfect sweet and sour balance with the fresh fruit is the perfect sip throughout the meal. The cheese enchiladas are definitely in the top 4 I have ever had. Just the right amount of spice, cheesy goodness and the flavor forward red sauce.. simply divine! This is now my new casual mexican eatery in Marin, you bet I shall be back!

Yelp
Because I'm such a fan of a few particular taco trucks and their ilk it's difficult for me to fork over the extra cash to dine at a full service Mexican restaurant such as Sabor A México. I can afford it but generally don't find the extra expense a worthy trade-off. On the menu here I was pleased to see a Fajita Salad to which I could add Carne Asada for an additional cost. I have a hands-down favorite Carne Asada Fajita Salad at a place in Southern California and this one was good but paled in comparison. Still, I'm in NorCal at a sit-down restaurant and the salad is tasty, just in a different league altogether and were I to return, creature of habit that I am, I'd be apt to order the exact same dish. Others at my table ordered 2-item and 3-item combos and consumed them without much comment on the taste except to note that the Chili Relleno was unexpectedly spicy. Sabor A México is a nice experience if you are seeking a Mexican restaurant with full table service in Marin. I liked - not loved - the food even though I generally tend to favor my Mexican fare when ordered at a counter at far lower prices.

Yelp
This hidden gem is the best Mexican restaurant in Marin, and it's not even close. Have been here dozens of times over the past year and have never had a bad experience. Authentic flavors that remind you of actually being in Mexico (we are addicted to the 'barbarita' jalapeño salsa, and definitely get the chilaquiles verdes if you come for brunch -- best I've had in the States!). Great drinks as well if that's your thing. Sabor is the kind of family establishment that you feel good about patronizing.

Yelp
Yum, yum, yum. A meal outside on a warm late summer night, so lovely. Great service, all pleasant, prompt and accommodating. Chicken mole ... flavorful, rich, not too sweet. Black beans--really delicious. Pinto beans--sooo flavorful. I'm told the carne asada, sangria, and al pastor tacos were good, too. Plus the flan. I didn't have room for flan, but I ate it all. The only fly in the ointment: the $12 house margarita was not very good, a shade on the bitter side. Next time I'll try the sangria. I'm so hard to please when it comes to Mexican food, this was really delightful.

Yelp
So I have this thing about Mexican food. I basically can eat it for every meal. My favorite cuisine but finding great Mexican is not always easy. Well Sabor did not disappoint. First, I just ordered food to go bc we had a baby asleep in the car. I ordered at the bar and the bartender could not have been nicer. The food we delicious but man those frijoles still got me in the end. Poor wife and kid on the ride home. Ha. Cool spot. Good food. Check it out.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is delicious, unique and although a bit different, still retains the same classic vibes of a good Mexican restaurant. We ordered the fajitas (mix of chicken and carnitas) and it was perfectly cooked! Just the right amount of spice. The jalapeños and onions were a perfect accompaniment. So juicy and full of flavor!! We also had a chili Rellano, and were pleasantly surprised to find it not fried, which meant for a healthier option! Service is wonderful and they really work on making sure you are happy.

Yelp
At some point in 2021 was down the street getting a fresh set of skins put on the car, and while waiting decided to take a walk. Thankful I did as I past Sabor A Mexico and decided to stop in for lunch. Ordered the "street tacos" and imagined being back in Mexico - I've enjoyed more than my share of street tacos in Cabo over the years and when I closed my eyes Sabor A Mexico had me right there - perfect! In the years since its become our family stop whenever some authentic amazing Mexican food comes up. My Wife and I had to create an agreement for only one basket of chips, because it is WAY to easy to get a second! The salsa is some of the best, with red and if you have not tried it yet, GET THE GREEN SALSA!!! My son absolutely loves the Carne Asada, and my wife and I dance around the menu though I always come back to a three item combo - cheese enchilada with green sauce, carne asada taco and tostada!!! I believe Sabor A Mexico is family owned, and the team is always friendly and a joy to dine with. A family restaurant we love to frequent, that we are always greeted with friendly smiles and great service only cements how much we love this spot. Ambiance is tasteful and there's a tv w sports in the bar but its subtle and does not take away from the dining room. Literally the only name that comes up when Mexican food is whats for dinner! (or late Sunday lunch after Costco run!)

Yelp
This was my favorite restaurant treat during Covid, tastes so good, I was saying so out loud to my dog! I ordered a lot during that time but had not gone in the restaurant until yesterday. Brought my cousins in for lunch and surprise - they know the owners, it was like a family gathering. Lots of history at restaurants in Novato. Gotta visit the restaurant! Everything about it is spectacular! Most especially the family run atmosphere and the fabulous delicious food! 10 million stars!!!

Yelp
It was awesome. Everything was good delicious it's a great service and the waiter . She was really nice.

Yelp
Great tacos! Nice people! The salsa was very good and definitely not ordinary. What more can I say.

Pam E.

Yelp
My husband said the mole enchiladas were excellent! I had the street tacos. They were well prepared but living in the East Bay with easy access to the Fruitvale District, they weren't as flavorful as I would have liked. If you're in the area, definitely give them a try.

Arina P.

Yelp
Best food and service in this place. So delicious Mexican cuisine. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Thank you for fresh delicious food and great service.

Umid U.

Yelp
It was our first time trying this restaurant. And my whole family loved it. From now on it our first choice for Mexican food.
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
In town for a few days and looking for a good locally owned Mexican restaurant, this place did NOT disappoint! I love fish tacos so it's usually my go to meal, they were absolutely delicious. The service was top notch. The place was spotless, which seems to be a challenge for some Mexican restaurants. If you're looking for an incredible, locally owned Mexican restaurant, this is it.

Shay F.

Yelp
Just ordered takeout from this place for the first time. It was fabulous. Decent price point and the food tasted fresh and not overly greasy. I will definitely order again.
google avatar

Martin V.

Yelp
Food is alright, food way over priced, 5 tacos for 20 dollars? Come on... 4 dollars each taco and a dollar more if you want a different type of meat, so 5 dollars a taco individually... ridiculous... never again, either way I was only passing by....
google avatar

Janet G.

Yelp
Great New Mexican restaurant in San Rafael. Reasonable prices, good service, good food.

Greg F.

Yelp
After a horrible experience at El Horache Loco where the wrong order was brought out and they refused to make it right and we left $50+ of food on the table, we drove to Sabor. I usually only order take out but this time we sat down and were welcomed and felt at home. The place was absolutely bustling and was warm and inviting. A server immediately brought out complimentary fresh, warm chips and homemade salsa (unlike Horache's stale, cold chips for $4.50). Our food was appetizing, colorful, hot, and most importantly, delicious. I got the chicken enchiladas with mole sauce (enmoladas), which came with a small mixed green salad (or beans) and rice with a couple fried pieces of banana as a garnish. It was beautiful. And it took away the disappointing experience we'd just had minutes earlier at El Horache Loco.

Sal A.

Yelp
From the moment I walked in Jackie's hospitality was something extraordinary. As I waited for my friend (which was running late) She greeted me as I had been a regular from day one while I waited.Her knowledge about her dishes and her connection to her Mexican ancestry was something worth cherishing her for. Definitely coming back to try those amazing, house made margaritas! Salud
google avatar

Kirti V.

Yelp
Very very limited vegetarian options but cheese enchiladas with rice and beans are a staple that I like They got the order wrong at first after my telling them very specifically that I was a vegetarian and a long wait The green chips sauce is good but I seriously think they need more vegetarian options I would go back if this happens

Howard S.

Yelp
We have been searching for really good Mexican food in Marin for 11 years and we found out. Service is excellent, restaurant is clean and inviting. I had the special pork tacos, wonderful with homemade black beans. I am usually not a fan of black beans but ate them all. We will be back!
google avatar

Samantha G.

Yelp
We absolutely love this place. Authentic Mexican food. Friendly staff! They do brunch on weekends!! We come here monthly if not biweekly. We keep it a secret, but honestly they deserve to have a long wait 24:7. It's that good!

Eric F.

Yelp
Amazing food great atmosphere and excellent service!! Tastiest Mexican food I've had in a long time!!! Margarita had a great pour too! I'll travel from east bay now to get my Mexican fix.
google avatar

P R D.

Yelp
Absolutely fabulous! So fresh and delicious, had a seasonal pineapple mule that was divine! My friend and I ate far more than we intended and could hardly move after, it was just SO GOOD!! Service was tentative and prompt.

Chi-Yun H.

Yelp
Food was awesome and the service was very friendly. I had a great time here I would love to return in the future.

A B.

Yelp
It was our first visit to the restaurant and definitely not the last Food was very good and the service too Loved the interior
google avatar

Yelp
Always excellent food and great service - a most welcomed addition to the West End and other Latino eateries
google avatar

Kitt H.

Yelp
The restaurant styling is great, and I was excited for a great meal, but the food was ultimately overpriced and under-flavored, alas. I had an al pastor mole burrito, and yeah, it should have been much more flavorful. I also had 3 al pastor tacos, and they were also underpowered. The chips were good, but the roasted tomato salsa was underwhelming.
google avatar

Christine R.

Yelp
Got margarita? Used to be an Indian restaurant. So excited for this family-owned Mexican restaurant along this stretch of 4th Street in San Rafael. It's legit authentic Mexican food, not overrated like some places in Marin. The green creamy sauce is delicious with a spicy kick, ask to buy some, it's mama's recipe. Hubby is picky, he thinks some places make their salsas too sweet; their salsa is on point. The chips aren't salty and super crispy fresh. Our son likes their carnitas burrito, and so does hubby. Been wanting to try this restaurant since "dining under the lights". This is my new hot spot, telling all my fellow Yelpers about it. I love spicy foods + camarones. They also devein the shrimp btw, not many places devein shrimp (extra star). There's something for everyone here. The decor is festive and outdoor dining is plenty. It's definitely a family affair; they all came from Mexico City and brought their passion and joy for cooking to Marin. Welcome to the 415, it's great to have tasty tacos, burritos, and colorful margaritas. They have a brunch menu now with sangria and mimosas to boot. Don't pass on dessert, must have the silky delightful flan. Can't wait to come back. 'Til next time ~ cheers & see you on Yelp (SYOY)! #supportfamilyownedbiz #supportlocalbiz #supportlatinobiz

Yelp
Delightfully surprised. I wish we would have started going here years ago but we will definitely be returning as soon as possible. Delicious food, fresh margaritas and the most excellent service. Thank you for a perfect meal!
google avatar

Eli S.

Yelp
This is from a kids' perspective! I ordered the cheese quesadilla, and the guacamole was awesome . And the presentation was also vary good! I rate this an 8 out of because one of my quesadilla slices was not cooked fully other than that 10/10
google avatar

Mitch K.

Yelp
Yum-a-liscious. Nicely done, somewhat more fancy than street food and very flavorful. Interior has the typically uncomfortable Mexican style painted wooden chairs as are found all over Mexico. But the food will make you ignore the chairs and focus on commenting how good everything is. Yes, there are drinks, margaritas come in classic, guava and other fruity flavors. Well done. Also have the line of the popular Mexican Jarritos, soft drinks that mimic fruit flavors. Refreshing and good. Burritos and enchiladas come standard and with twists. Main dishes are a lot to decide upon. Take your time and your server can help you. Alambres ($20) are a notable street dish served in Mexico City, natives from which are known as Chilangos: grilled steak, bacon, choriso, bell peppers and onions, topped with Oaxaca cheese. House Chili Verde ($21) is slow roasted portk shoulder & ribs in a chiplolte tomato sauce. Very tender and lots of liquids that, to finish, you have to soak it up with fresh tortillas once you have spooned out as much as you can. There is a kid menu and even a 5 taco variety plate. There are also some 2-item ($17) and 3-item ($21) plates and you choose. In mild weather, they have a nice covered outside dining area. Not cheap, but very good.

Riccardo C.

Yelp
~~~An insult to Mexican cuisine! Paid $40 for... Flavorless, small, Chile relleno, cheese was melted but firmed back up. The orange looking red-sauce was tasteless. The ground beef enchilada did have flavor but was weird, off-putting. The rice and beans seemed like doctored up canned food--dead. Small portions (everything) on long rectangle plate which made the food get cold even though it came out in just 5 minutes! Red flag. ~~~The Margarita tasted like sour mix, almost no tequila despite the upgraded version Staff were a mix of "very nice" and "cold." Waitress, very nice and apologized, but no attempt to problem solve. Left, feeling stolen from and annoyed. Never to return.
google avatar
Kevin M.
Yelp
Everything about this place was spectacular. I was a bit skeptical at first because of how limiting the menu may seem but after asking the waiter a few questions, he was able to give me a better understanding of the menu and how their kitchen can make any Mexican food I'd want. The food was amazing as well as the service. Definitely plan on coming here again.
google avatar
Kathleen C.
Yelp
I loved this place, the beauty of the decor, the friendliness of the wait staff, and stand out delicious traditional Mexican food we got the chicken mole enchiladas and the chilli verde. I'm telling all my foodie friends. I give it five stars! Kathleen
google avatar
Kevin L.
Yelp
Grandma's mole was perfectly seasoned and just enough of that mole sweetness on enchiladas that melted in your mouth. Overall, I suspect they don't use lard in their frijoles refritos, almost tasted similar to ones in the can that is fat free, it was super clean. My favorite is Celia's to this day. Also when I go out for Mexican , if it's just a taqueria, for sure I want the dirty dirty real deal like cabeza, tripa, buche...but for dinner a more comfortable setting I'm ok with a nice combo plate but the rice and beans always gotta be tasty, not healthy. I'm not here for a salad with dressing on the side, which I do at times. My kids food were on par too. Just again a bit too healthy clean. Didn't have muy caliente salsa, usual spots I go to, they make it special if you ask, like habanero or Serrano forward very spicy salsa. So that was a bummer. Margaritas and modelo drafts came out quick from the bar! Service was very nice and attentive. My son had a chance to practice his Spanish and our lovely server spoke back with no reserves, that's awesome!
google avatar
Kelli M.
Yelp
Everything we've had has been outstanding! The margaritas are all fantastic, but I think the strawberry is my favorite. Tacos are great, seafood is all fresh and cooked to perfection. The staff are all so nice and helpful.
google avatar
David A.
Yelp
I had lunch at the bar on a rainy Saturday. Good food, chat too. Bonus: charming servers.
Michael
Yelp
I really like this place and the serving staff, though the food is sorta inconsistent. Often the carne asada tacos are dry and tough, and sometimes the green tomatillo sauce has too much lemon flavor in it--over-powering. Good margaritas, and it's a nice neighborhood place so I'll go back!
google avatar
jose c.
Yelp
This is family's favorite restaurant. We also visit sabor a México almost each week. Everything we eat here is very good. My dads favorite plate is the taco's de lengua. The cocktails are also very good. The waiters are very nice so are the owners. Sabor a México is our 2nd house. Our favorite waitress is Ceci. Thank you Sabor A México for all the good food.
Yelp
When ever I crave chile verde this is the spot to go! Love this place so much! It's my go to! Service and ambiance is perfect!
