Where to Find Birria in Portland and Beyond | Eater Portland

"Northeast Portland can get its birria fix at Sabor Casero, a combo taqueria-pupuseria cart in an NE MLK food pod. On weekends, the cart serves up overstuffed quesabirria with free consomé on the side, in addition to Salvadoran classics. Every once in a while, visitors may spot birria ramen and birria tamales on the menu; they’re worth nabbing when they’re there. Sabor Casero is open for takeout."

If you like pupusas and tacos, look no further. These are authentic as you can get. The owners are amazing and very polite. I was a bit hesitant to go to a place where they sell tacos and pupusas but they knocked it out of the park on both ends. I ordered 1 taco de carne asada, 1 birria taco and 2 pork and cheese pupusas and let me tell you!!! All the food was delicious. Great job Sabor Casero Pupuseria

Google
Pupusas, birria tacos, and yummy treats galore! This spot, built out of a bus, was a fantastic spot not too far from our place in Northeast! They even got us a mango drink on the house! :) Brought this all home to enjoy, can't recommend this place enough, will definitely be adding this to our lunch and snacks rotation!

Google
Very good pupusas. I picked up three and took them back to work, it was a lot of food. I shared them with my coworkers, and they were amazed, they had never had them before. Like any good pupusa place, you have to wait a few minutes because they make them to order, this was the first sign that it was going to be a good lunch.

Google
Great food good service made fresh when you order. It’s the best we’ve had. Many choices and great flavor. Really enjoyed the mushroom pupusa. Fried plantains we’re delicious.

Google
We came specifically for the QUESABIRRIA tacos we seek them out in every city we go. These were FANTASTIC!!! SO MUCH MEAT. Amazing flavor not over flowing with cheese to make up for a soggy Shells or lacking meat. The consume is delicious and thick and full of flavor almost stew like. We only spent about 20 bucks and got 7 tacos 3 connsumes and a glass bottle coke. Well worth the drive and time. nice customer service and there is a dine in covered shelter at the food cart court. CASH ONLY!!! We'll be back.

Fire if want some good Mexican food or Salvadorian food come here especially the Papas Fritas

Google
Amazing papusa's, great authentic flavor, and such sweet ladies behind the counter! 10 at a 10 flavor, 10 at a 10 speed, 10 out of 10 recommended to everyone anytime. Seriously some of the best papusas I've EVER had. That's really saying something! Little hole in the wall spot. Parking lot of "Desires" strip club. Don't let the modest appearance fool you, this is some DAMN good food.

Dylan Muhlberg

Google
Good quality pupusas and kind staff. The pupusas are giant. At $7/each your eyes might go wide at first, but they’re double the size of typical pupusas. I’d go back, the one thing I wish they’d do a little better is be a little more generous with the escabeche and salsas. Seriously, they give you half of what is necessary. A kind suggestion, since costs are so high for small business, ditch the plastic to-go containers for foil. That might offset costs for providing more toppings/condiments. All that said, the quality and care is there. Great spot.

Yelp
SOOOO GOOD. Literally the BEST Salvi and Mexican food. I got pupusas and my husband got the birria burrito, we both couldn't believe how good the food was. And the owners are the sweetest!! Place is ran by a husband and wife that make the food with LOVE!! 10/10 recommend, I don't know why this place isn't packed with people. Something to note: Maps sent us to the wrong location even though the correct address was listed, don't know why. We called the owner and she guided us in the right direction.

Yelp
First time here today and LOVED IT! Caritas taco had a little crup and not greasy, flavor was good. Carne Asada was good, meat was not rough, cut smaller I'm sure that helped. Good amount of meat on the tacos. Papusa was great, lots of cheese. I love that. Gotta go back again. Expect a little wait as they make all to order. I believe they even make the tortillas to order. Customer service was top notch. They were very nice.

Yelp
Sooo delicious I first tried this truck when they were on MLK for pupusas and they were so good! Went back for the quesabirria and again, did not disappoint. Also tried their birria mulitas which are also amazing! Super sweet couple with great customer service! Highly recommend! It is also cash only too!
google avatar

Adam R.

Yelp
Try the Atole de Clote! It's delicious! Really fast service! I also got the quessabirria. It was excellent. Highly recommend. Will be returning.

Yelp
**GO HERE NOW** This spot is a hidden treasure and every single item we got was stellar. I'll get into it below, but OMG just go. I had an insane craving for birria tacos and found this place right around the corner from my house. There is a birria trend happening in Portland right now, but the popular spots are further out or in SE. Don't bother with that drive. I'd beg to argue that this place is THE BEST in the city. I got the quesabirria tacos, husband got the birria burrito, and we threw in a couple if pupusas because duh, why not? Look at the pics, y'all. Holy lord, these portions are spectacular. And the flavor... I can't find words. Even the salsas they provide are out of this world. Pros: - portions are huge - FLAVOR - super sweet staff - convenient location for North Portland Cons: - cash only (bank is right next door) - cleanliness (but the spot is legit as hell) - crowding in order area - street parking only Take these cons with a grain of salt. The place is established and all of these issues are typical of a legit taqueria cart. These salsas are heavenly and I'm nearly dead of a food coma because I could not stop eating. Pro tip: CALL AHEAD - this spot is popping and the wait was 20 minutes due to all the orders they have coming in.

Yelp
Sheesh, this place is hella yummy! Found them on Instagram and they live up to the hype. Really nice people making delicious food. We got 6 of the dipping tacos (idk what they're called lol, ive been calling them dipping tacos since I've seen them on ig) and two soups. Each taco is 3.50 and they're packed with beef and cheese. The beef is on the fatty side, but omg so flavorful. The soup that goes with it has meat inside of it too and enhances the taco taste! The only thing that could improve it is maybe a fresh component like pico de gallo since it is a bit oily. Still though, I'll definitely come back to get these tacos again! So delicious and the owners are warm and friendly. A local business worth supporting for sure!

Yelp
Got the Birria tacos and they are frankly the best I've ever had. All the ingredients were very fresh and fragrant.

Yelp
The biggest trend in Sacramentonis Quesobirria in 2020 and while visiting Portland I researched the top spots in town for them. A few articles highlighted some restaurants that seemed 'extra' with their presentation but what I love about Korita is presentation + home feel and I found that with Korita savor Casero. We drove 25 min to experience these bad boys and I can't say it enough how fuegito these quesobirrias were. Considering it was raining that day I was expecting it to be slow but when it's fire, the line doesn't hold back. Happy to wait 20 min and with anticipation we did not hesitate to open the platter and dig in. I don't even want to explain how delicious these were. Stop reading and have them yourself!

Yelp
Mexican/Salvadorian food galore!! My fiancé and I were craving some quesobirria tacos with consomé. We were not disappointed! In fact, we were so impressed that we truly believe this is the spot if you want birria. It has such a great flavor. Best in Portland. Hands down. We also tried Pupusas and the fried plantains. Very good. Also, shout out to the owners. They are very nice and humble. Since it was out first time, they gave us a free drink of their mixed fruit agua. It was delicious and refreshing. Do yourself a favor and go check them out if you want some good Mexican/Salvadorian food and support an awesome local family owned restaurant.

Yelp
After visiting Birrieria La Plaza and enjoying their Birria. I thought there had to be a Birria place closer to Portland proper. Lo and behold a few miles from home was Korita Sabor Casero on MLK BLVD. This little food cart is a little hidden gem from the road, so you'll have to look for it. As I walk up, I see alot of Hispanics getting their lunches. Always a good sign. I ordered what I came for, Quesobirria's with Consomme. There were 3 quesobirria's stuffed with beef and cheese. What separates them from La Plaza is their favor. More of a favorful meating tasting beef and consomme with herbs and spices. The price for this is a very respectable $7.50. Give them a try, and see what this new Birria craze is all about. "One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well" - Virginia Woolf

Yelp
New to the N Portland area. I was on the hunt for quesabirria. As a Hillsboro native, this isnt hard to come by. I found this place after a google search and it was the closest to me so I decided to give it a shot. They were pretty busy with a few large orders so we had to wait about 10 mins before we could order. I ordered 9 quesabirria and 2 drinks. Consomme was free which was a plus. We waited another 15 mins for our food to be finished. Now, I'm used to standard size corn tortillas for my birria tacos so I always get 4. Big mistake. These tortillas were slightly larger than the average and they were STUFFED full of birria. Absolutely tender and delicious. I wish there was a bit more cheese as there wasnt much there. I was only able to eat 2 out of the 4 but u definitely wanted to finish it all. The consomme was good. Not great. Could use a little spice. Next time I'll ask for onion as a topping as it only had cilantro and I'm used to having both. Also, this was Birria de Res. I wish they would do a Birria de Chivo or maybe mix the two as I know goat is a little expensive, but it definitely adds to the flavor of the consomme. I will continue to come here unless I find a place that beats this one. Also, I'm dying to try their pupusas.

Yelp
Siempre la mejor calidad con las quesabirrias y popusas. La agua fresca es una q todos deberían probar

Yelp
Good food. King staff and the popusas are great. Needs like a stationary location, some people have lunch around 10:30.

Yelp
I absolutely recommend this place my daughter got Asada tacos I got Chicharrón con queso Pupusas & got my husband a Mulita... The price is right the food is great the people are nice love this food truck.
google avatar

Peeta B.

Yelp
I moved from California recently and my number one concern was not being able to find my Salvadoran staples. So far I've tried three pupuserias total and this one has been my favorite. I get the revueltas. There is good filling to masa ratio. And the chicharron is delicious. Some places don't season the chicharron too well or use too much masa and not enough filling but this place gets it right.
google avatar

Dulce P.

Yelp
One of my favorite places for pupusa. I see they also added more things to their menu like the famous quesabirrias. I have tried those yet but they look delicious. The owners are one of the nicest people I know, so their customer service is on point. Over all, this place is great. Great food, great prices and great people.
google avatar

Keila S.

Yelp
So i just ordered from them. $18 but I gave him $20.. I coulda swore I ordered fish tacos and 3 tacos you dip in the sauce and a papusa. But whatever. What I got was the fish tacos perfectly but only 2 burrita tacos. So yeah. I even went back and said we didn't order that. Then why tf would I pay $20? Scammers.
google avatar

Yelp
This is the BEST Birria tacos in all of Portland. We have tried just about all of the other well-known ones and we maintain this is the best. Not only their birria tacos and al pastor tacos are on point, their price point is just insane - you can fill an entire family for about $ 20! They are also a wonderful couple and just so, so appreciating of your patronage. Run here!

Yelp
Best Birria in Portland! Pupusas are also the best! Good quality ingredients and food. The owners are very kind and friendly.

Yelp
The best quesabirria close to Portland! Pupusas and fresh juices are excellent as well. And so cheap!

Yelp
OOOOH MAMA!!! The folks running this spot are ultra kind and welcoming. Still waiting on my food but I already want to come back. Smells are popping OFF, I don't even mind sitting here in the heat. The crew went with a variety of pupusas, shrimp tacos, a carnitas sincronisada (think loaded quesadilla), and a birria burrito, with plenty of extra birria for dipping. Only been drooling for about 8 minutes so things are moving just fine, just a team of two here and they're killing it. Located on the corner of Jarret and NE MLK. Street parking available and there's a lot across the street for the Wells Fargo that didn't look like it had any posted signage about parking limitations. Regardless, we were back in the car with armfuls of food in under 20 minutes, even with a short line. Apologies for a lack of photos, everything was devoured immediately :-) First things first: The birria is to die for, same goes for the shrimp and carnitas. Everything was seasoned terrifically and cooked even better. One friend said it was the best shrimp taco she's had in years. The pupusas were delicious as well, and the sincronisada/burrito were monster meals by themselves. The salsas were great as well, flavorful though not very spicy. We added our own heat but I'm sure you could ask to have your food kicked up a notch. And the horchata too! Nice and thick, with a pleasant nuttiness that none of us could pin but all of us enjoyed. I'd honestly be surprised to find a bad item on their menu. Can't wait to come back! TL,DR; everything is delicious and cooked well. service is fast and amicable. prices are good too; 4$ pupusas and tacos, which were large and made in house, even the tortillas! 2.50$ tamales. 8-12$ for the big meals. Absolutely deserving of 5 stars!!!

Chris M.

Yelp
Wow!! Great service with a smile and amazing food what else could you want. It was my first time trying quesabirria and it did not disappoint. I also tried the bean and cheese pupusas similar to a quesadilla but way better. The owner is very friendly, when I told him it was my first time trying his food he offered me a free drink. It was a delicious concoction of all kinds of fresh fruit! Would definitely come back and highly recommend to anyone
google avatar

Yelp
I am so lucky to have this place next to my job! Having lunch here regularly is probably one of the high points of my week! Everyone is incredible friendly and even have been teaching me how to order my two chicken tacos in Spanish! If you're in the neighborhood and not sure what to order, here you can't go wrong!! Bring cash since they are cash only :)
google avatar

Regina I.

Yelp
This is the spot for the best really authentic Mexican food you can get with some IEl'Salvador hits too. The mom is the cook and she can get down in the kitchen. Even the tortillas are hand made . Love, love this truck of great treats to eat . Try the Pupusa's they are tongue slapping tasty!

Josie's J.

Yelp
We went for atole & veggie pupusas because it had been raining but we saw this big jar of "fruit salad juice" ...they gave us a sample to share and we all ordered a glass. It's our new summer drink for sure! Spinach and cheese PUPUSAS were loaded with greens and were delicious. Loroco and cheese pupusas was divine and overflowing with toasted puddles of cheese. ATOLE was thick and warm with sweet corn pieces in it - the perfect warm-me-up-from-the-inside drink. THE ENSALADA DE FRUTA drink was extremely refreshing with chopped apple, orange and pineapple chunks in it (maybe other fruit too.) The people were incredibly kind and friendly to me and my kids. They have several other things we'd like to try on the menu. Next time we're in Portland we'll be stopping in for sure! Highly recommend it!

Yelp
Their birria tacos are absolutely AMAZING along with their consomé. Definitely recommend !
google avatar

Yelp
This is the best Mexican food I have ever had. Very friendly. They have me a free Hoy Champurrado. Try their homemade juice. The Pupusa is life changing. I will be back... maybe even later today

Jacqueline G.

Yelp
Most authentic pupusas I have tried in Portland. Very much recommended if you're looking for some Central American comfort food! Fish tacos were amazing and a happy surprise of such great flavor. - De las mejores pupusas que he comido en Portland. Y Los tacos de camarón ni digamos... wow. Para esos días que uno busca el sabor de su casa, cae de maravilla. Súper recomendado!
google avatar

Seth H.

Yelp
Delicious food and the kindest, most welcoming, most helpful people. Some of the best papusas I've ever had anywhere in the world. I'll definitely come back.
google avatar

Abraham K.

Yelp
I've been here a few times now and everything has been top notch. The last time I went the man working the counter very graciously gave me a free fruit punch. This drink was pure juice, and had a variety of finely shaved fruits, including, I think, green mango. A nice introductory meal here would be to grab the above described juice, a pupusa of your liking, which comes complete with pickled cabbage and tomato soup sauce, and add to that one salvadoran tamale. IMO salvadoran tamales are superior to Mexican tamales, which are often dryer and blander by comparison. Both the Salvadoran tamales and the pupusas here at Sabor Casero are about the best I've had in the Portland metro area! I look forward to trying their Torta Hawaiianas the next time I'm there. My only suggestion, and this is not a big deal, but in the dead of winter the covered seating area could use a heat lamp.
google avatar

Adriana Z.

Yelp
Authentic Salvadorian food! All hand made! Food taste fresh and made to order! Pupusas, are a good size!! A variety of different fillings like chicharrón with cheese, jalapeño with cheese (my favorite, made with fresh jalapeños), bean and cheese, etc. Sweet palatines with sweet condensed milk adds a great dessert!
google avatar

Mari F.

Yelp
Its sabor casero for sure, the tacos were AMAZING cannot wait to try everything on the menu.
google avatar

Peter G.

Yelp
I like a nice pupusa when the urge strikes. They do 'em nice. Tell me "I love a pupusa" and I'll tell you "go to this place and eat a pupusa".
google avatar

Brittnee T.

Yelp
YUM ! I was looking for something good to eat nearby, so naturally I come to Yelp . Food trucks are amazeballs and I'm glad I found this one . I got a bean and cheese pupusa and lemme tell ya, it was delicious . So cheesy and warm . I love corn tortillas, retried beans and cheese, so I was in heaven . It was served w. a couple sauces that I tried but set aside and a kind of coleslaw that was pretty good . They even have a little inside area you can sit it, watch whatever they have on tv, charge your phone and just relax . Def gonna be my new go-to !
google avatar

Micah W.

Yelp
Super delicious and authentic papusas!! There's a Small amount of covered seating and a tv. The guy working was super nice and even gave me an extra papusa. I got four papusas, the bean and cheese, pork and cheese, spinach and cheese and the jalapeño and cheese. All were super good. Take note that the prices have gone up to $3 and there menu is larger than what is pictured. Next time I go back I will add a new photo

Jon H.

Yelp
Went here for the Birria quesatacos because they're way closer than the famed pdx or la plaza AND they're open on mondays. Was not disappointed! Tacos were delicious and the flavor was much more unique than the other places. It looks like they're selling their truck so please support them while you can! They were incredibly nice and I'm super excited to come back and give their pupusas a try.
google avatar

Chip W.

Yelp
Best burritos we've ever eaten. Super friendly and you can call ahead for easy pick up.

Davina Q.

Yelp
Update: I go here all the time now. The burritos are also excellent (and large). One caveat: you should call ahead. Sometimes they are inexplicably closed, and it's very disappointing.
google avatar

Doug S.

Yelp
I live in the neighborhood and have been by FIVE times to try this joint during posted business hours: closed each time. Latest was last Saturday at 6:00 pm during their stated business hours. I eat out in my neighborhood quite a bit but I won't try again. If business is so good they can't stay open during posted business hours then they don't need my dollar anyways.
google avatar

Alex S.

Yelp
OK, so this place gets five stars for their al pastor tacos alone. This is some damn fine al pastor, and not greasy at all, which is a problem I have had with so much al pastor. Tortillas are handmade and seriously great. 2.00 per taco may seem a bit expensive compared to other taco trucks, however, these tacos are larger to correspond with the price and 2 (or maybe 3) tacos is enough to feed even a hungry person. Unfortunately, their carnitas are flavorful but somewhat oily (tacos paella does better carnitas), the pollo is pretty flavorless and sub-par (though it does seem to be white meat), and the asada is acceptable, but not great. However I will come back again and again for that al pastor. I may add a fifth star if the papusas are as great as the other reviews make them out to be.
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
Por fin! A DELICIOUS taco truck in my neighborhood! I am so happy to have found these guys. They are a husband and wife from Mexico and El Salvador and they bring the best flavors from both! The tacos are delicious and the tortillas as well as tamales are made in-truck. They do empanadas and all kinds of things. The menu is huge. I have to go back to try more because so far all I can vouch for are the Carnitas; they are so tasty and tender that I order them every time and forget to try something new. Hopefully they will bring some buisness that way because there is a whole food cart pod set-up there and so far I think they are the only ones. But damn, I hope they don't move.

Andrew H.

Yelp
Cannot more highly recommend these guys, foods incredible. definitely check out their camaron tacos and fruit drink they make, soo good
google avatar

Karl G.

Yelp
By far, the most authentic Salvadoran food, North of Salvador. Wonderful, caring people who love cooking! Absolutely delicious dishes and great prices!! Go!!!
google avatar

Nathan D.

Yelp
Fantastic Papusas. Interesting location, don't let that deter you from trying out this hidden gem
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
Delicious food and super nice people. The carne asada tacos and the bean and cheese pupusas are are my favorite.
google avatar

Barbie F.

Yelp
My family and I are vegan. We've always loved the vegan pupusas at Korita's but lately they've been adding nice touches like spinach or beet masa (dough). The ingredients are aways fresh and tasty and the owners, Lidia and Salvador are friends but I've spent a lot of time there and they are so kind to EVERYONE. Echandole ganas!
google avatar

Crystal M W.

Yelp
El Pastor burrito with red sauce. Huge and tasty and right across the street from home. Must walk to/from if you eat the whole thing. Tops!
google avatar

Ioana M.

Yelp
Delicious and authentic food. Their home-made fruit punch transports you on a sunny beach- add the sweet plantains and you're practically in paradise.

Dennis K.

Yelp
Food here is so GOOD! I'm blessed to be only a couple blocks away. Good service, great people and especially great prices! If you haven't tried this place yet you need to check it out now! Gonna go get me some Cheese Papusas!
