Yelp
Having lived in SF for so long, I feel like I have a pretty good sense of where to go if I ever need to find a specific ingredient for a recipe. Worse come to worst? There's always Whole Foods. However, being largely unfamiliar with Sacramento, all I was aware of around Midtown is a couple of seemingly ill equipped Safeways and nary an Asian market or a Whole Foods nearby. So, to say I was stoked to discover Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op would be a bit of an understatement. Never mind the fact that it was actually purely by happenstance, as the first time i came here was actually to check out their Pachamama counter instead...whoops!
Now, if you happened to wander into this place without looking at the sign above the door, you might actually think you were walking around a Whole Foods. In a lot of ways, the two are more than just a little similar. The quality and selection of the fruits and vegetables here is terrific (so many varieties of mushrooms!), the meat and seafood counter is well stocked and staffed by some friendly workers, their cheese offerings are super enticing, their aisles and cold units include by name brand and lesser known labels, their bakery is far better than what you'll find at the likes of Safeway, and their fresh breads feature freshly baked goodies from ACME, which I absolutely love.
In addition to the typical staples that you'll find at most other markets, the co-op also has a ton of delicious prepared foods. However, beyond just the salad and hot foods bar, soups, sandwiches, and sushi offerings, they've also got the aforementioned Pachamama coffee counter, a juice and smoothie bar, pizzas, and even a taqueria station! What's more, everything in this place feels slick, modern, and, most importantly, clean.
With all of that being said, I'd be remiss not to acknowledge the fact that, as so many others have already mentioned, the prices here are a bit higher than what you might find elsewhere. Not demonstrably far off from the likes of Whole Foods or even Safeway, based on the small handful of things I've picked up here, but it can certainly add up if your grocery list is long. Also, with regards to parking, the lot in front on 29th can get pretty full, but it's usually only about half full at night. Regardless, you might actually be better off heading straight to their neighboring parking garage on 28th and S, as spaces are far more plentiful and it's shaded/covered from the sun and elements.
Despite how the prices here might be a little more than what you can find elsewhere, it's worth it not having to burn $5 a gallon in gas and burning the time to head elsewhere, especially if you only need a few things. Plus, it's nice being able to support a co-op that also helps to support neighborhood and community events!
FOUR AND A HALF STARS rounded down for now.
