The Best Coffee Shops in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"This cozy coffee shop is located between two historic cemeteries in New Orleans: Odd Fellow’s Rest and St. Patrick’s. A fenced-in patio overlooks marble mausoleums — inside, the living feast on vegan doughnuts, coffee cake, and vegan zucchini tamales, sipping on lattes and Americanos. Sacred Grinds is haunted and proud of it." - Eater Staff

Google
The baristas here are so friendly. They had a fresh blueberry syrup when we went and I need to try it next time I go. My friend got an iced blueberry latte (we both agreed that the blueberry flavor wasn't very strong) and an iced moon chai, and an almond croissant. I got the hot moon chai. I am usually a coffee only person, so it was significant that I ordered their chai, but I had heard a lot of good reviews on it. It was good for sure but it wasn't amazing. It's cool because the shop is right by the graveyard. Also, there is a retail shop attached to the coffee shop.

Gary Belanger

Google
Fun little coffee shop. Lots of loose leaf tea options. Patio seating overlooking a graveyard which in any other city would be a negative but here in Nola that’s a plus. Decent array of bakery options, all fresh and tasty.

Nickey Martin

Google
The coffee I got tasted like straight doodoo lol worst coffee I’ve ever had couldn’t sip it if I tried 😂 cool lookin place though

Kat Futrell

Google
Friendly staff, tasty coffee and a lovely view. I'll definitely be making it a point to come back next time I'm in NOLA. I stayed on the back patio for over an hour just enjoying the atmosphere and my coffee

Johnny Gomez

Google
Very cool coffee shop that serves up delicious coffee. We tried the Iced Latte and Iced Mocha Latte…both were very good. They offer dairy and non-dairy milks…and will adjust the amount of flavor syrup for those of us that don’t like our coffee sweet!!!

Kristina Parsons

Google
Great coffee and ube cake! The lady making the coffee was the sweetest and very friendly however, the man that was in the store area made my party feel very uncomfortable. He didn't greet us and acted like we weren't there. Then followed us to the patio area and still didn't speak.

Google
What a great little spot to grab a coffee before strolling through the City of the Dead! Immaculate vibes and fantastic, friendly service. Definitely add this to your morning plans! I recommend the house made chai!

Consuela Ashmore

Google
I take all my witch friendly friends there for coffee. The atmosphere is just perfect with a Voodoo vibe that’s NOLA!

Yelp
Great service, barista was super sweet and gave awesome recs. We sat outside to get the whole experience and had a view of the cemetery. Very unique place.

Yelp
I came here as my first stop from the airport in New Orleans because I needed good coffee, a vegan pastry and some peace and quiet. The atmosphere here is friendly and spacious with no pressure. I discovered that it does not matter where you choose to sit because all options are quite fantastic, but only if you are comfortable in the setting of multiple cemeteries as your view. It is easy to get here on the street car and would make the trip back here when I come back to New Orleans. Sending some special love to this cafe especially for the herb store next door and for the vegan coffee cake

Kristen R.

Yelp
Super cool little coffee shop that leads right up to one of the St. Patrick cemeteries. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Went here to get a good cup of coffee instead of the severely overpriced Starbucks coffee and specialty drinks. Small place but had on road parking. Barista was pleasant and knew her stuff. Got 2 speciality cold drinks and an Ethiopian medium roast coffee (3 bucks, 16oz). I am a coffee roaster of 20 years and know a good cup of coffee and it was good. My wife and daughter liked the cold drinks and when my wife asked for extra chocolate and both requested almond milk, there was no up charge like Starbucks. Yeah! Obviously they are not out to make shareholders happy, only their customers. I's go here again. Oh...bonus, the st. Patrick cemetery #1 is right there. Just enter it and see the above ground cemetery.

Yelp
The best coffee shop in New Orleans! Good music, friendly baristas and some of the best coffee you'll ever have. Scared Grinds allows you to customize your coffee in almost every conceivable way, from adding a pump of lavender to mixing in chocolate protein powder. They also have really good matcha, along with assorted breakfast items like coffee cake and vegan cookies.
google avatar

Yelp
Backyard is really cool. Only a few tables in the back but it has a view of the cemetery...and some interesting statues too lol. There are bathrooms inside and outside in the back. Interesting variety of pastries, snacks and teas, classic cafe offerings. Friendly, homey cafe, definitely recommend

Yelp
Very cool coffee shop with funky vibes. It's hard to describe, but it's zombie themed and the atmosphere is really fun. This is a popular coffee shop as well, with people filtering in and out consistently. Situated right next to the cemetery, the outdoor seating (enclosed back patio with seating/tables and a roof) allows you to sit next to tombstones!! I can imagine sitting there on a slightly drizzly day, comfy with a book and some coffee. We tried a latte and their "Moon Chai" tea. My boyfriend enjoyed the coffee, and I loved my tea! The chai tea was very well spiced and the spices tasted really fresh. I don't know if the quality is just good or if they grind the spices fresh, but it's not your cheap grocery-store tea bag for sure! The prices were fair and average too. Along with the expected types of coffees and teas available, they also offer pastries. They looked absolutely delectable, but I just came from a big lunch and couldn't possibly eat anything more! I'll have to try them next time. One more cool thing! This coffee shop shares a space with a small hippie dippie store that sells incense, herbs, oils, etc. According to the plaques on the wall, it's an award winning shop as well!

Yelp
Love this spot next to the cemetery, it's a cool little coffee shop with an awesome theme definitely my kind of spot. They have a small seating area in the back of the shop to sit down and enjoy the view of the cemetery a chain link fence is the only thing separating the porch from the tombs. I usually judge a spot for the first time by ordering just a regular coffee , I have to say it was really good better than most. I ordered a 20oz medium roast and it was nice and hot just how I like it the flavor was spot on as well. The menu has a bit of all the traditional drinks you'd expect with some of their signature drinks as well. They also offer a limited variety of pastries and bagels. *** Helpful fact, the charity hospital cemetery is located right across the street that also has the hurricane Katrina memorial in it.

Yelp
Huge, huge respect for this place! My friend and I both are part of the disability community and coming here always makes us feel like 1 million bucks. Whenever Grace is working, she always goes above and beyond to accommodate us. Wonderful wonderful venue, amazing selection, and absolutely incredible staff

Yelp
So glad we found Sacred Grinds and took a few mins to sit and sip coffee on the back patio which overlooks the cemetery next door. This shop has a zombie theme with a hippie vibe, which I dig, although I'm not very hippie lol. Food options were vegan tamales and some other I don't recall now. unfortunately I wasn't hungry so didn't try them but love the concept of a zucchini tamale. Cappuccino and flat white were well made and tasty

Sandy M.

Yelp
I loved this unique spot! The spooky vibes are here. I found this place on tiktok and thought I would give it try. They didn't disappoint. The barista was really nice and had great recommendations. I sat out on the patio and had a unique view. The coffee was great.

Yelp
Stopped to grab a chai tea latte on a recent visit to the Mid-City Necropolis. Sacred Grinds is nestled between Oddfellow's Rest and St. Patrick's Cemetery and across from the Hurricane Katrina Memorial and the Charity Hospital Cemetery. The Charity Hospital Cemetery, also known as Potter's Field, is the last resting place for victims who succumbed to the Yellow Fever and Influenza Pandemics as well as those who donated their body as a cadaver for Louisiana medical school education. The Katrina Memorial Mausoleums are where unidentified victims of Hurricane Katrina are interred. The Chai Tea Latte was perfect on a cool afternoon. The outdoor patio seating looks directly onto St. Patrick's Cemetery No. 2. Bring a student ID for a 20% discount. Buy a pastry and get a free cup of coffee. Nice to see vegan/vegetarian options like tamales and pastries. Parking is available on the street or take the streetcar to the end of the line.

Yelp
This was a tough decision to give them 3/5 stars so I'll have to break it down. Location 5/5 Coffee 4/5 Service 0/5 Food 0/5 Yes the location is absolutely incredible. I mean you basically get to drink coffee with the dead and in a time when most cemeteries are closed, this was worth the drive from French Quarter for us to get coffee and tour some of the cemeteries on our own time. Coffee was tasty. I got a decaf mocha and my fiancé a peppermint mocha, my fiancé is a regular mocha drinker and she stated that it was the best mocha she's had so that says a lot. My mocha was good, tasted slightly gritty but I appreciated it not being too sweet. Food.. well I guess it would be unfair to say anything about the food since we didn't get to try anything but I was irritated that at 10am on a Friday morning, their pastry case was nearly empty. Service was atrocious. The girl at the front seemed like she would rather be ANYWHERE else and could not care less about us. We had to constantly ask her to repeat what she said because she practically whispered everything. Irritating. I'd come back for the location alone but the service was appalling

Yelp
I had the Dirty Zombie it was fabulously delicious. I shared it my husband and adult son, It was so delicious.
google avatar

Megan M.

Yelp
A cup of coffee with a cemetery view - it's a experience you'd only have in New Orleans for sure. Friendly baristas and the coffee is solid. There's also a 20% discount for students if you show your student ID!
google avatar

Yelp
Very Hip Zombie theme Coffee/Hemp shop on the grave yard. Got a coffee and left wish we could have stayed!

Yelp
We were visiting the cemeteries for the first time so thought of checking this place out right next to a cemetery, creepy but cool experience. We got cappuccinos, beautiful coffee!! Service was quick too.
google avatar

Ellery D.

Yelp
This might have just become my favorite cafe in NOLA. Their caramel frappe is to die for, the zombie decor is right up my alley, and the cozy back deck looks out on a peaceful cemetery. Love ittttt.

Shelby H.

Yelp
Worth the visit for the ambiance alone. Such a wonderfully themed little shop. And the coffee is delicious. Cannot recommend the dirty zombie enough. Service is always great, too. Definitely worth a try for anyone in search of caffeine.

Yelp
My friend and I had stopped here because I wanted to see a cemetery in LA before I returned home. After we walked around, we noticed the coffee shop and decided to visit. The shop was so cute with a cafe on one side with pastries and a store on the other side with herbs, vitamins and novelties. All the staff were extremely nice and very helpful. I cant wait to visit again when in on the area.

Brittany B.

Yelp
I absolutely adore this place! The vibe is right here. If I lived here, I would definitely frequent this place often. The coffee was wonderful and sitting next to the cemetery was very peaceful. The one staff member I interacted with was very sweet. I will definitely being coming again during my next NOLA visit.
google avatar

Laura C.

Yelp
Great taste in drinks , love the funky vibe !! They've got coffee, the girl there was sooo nice. Sweet. Enough characters. Made it.
google avatar

Michelle H.

Yelp
Ordered the medium cafe au lait to go with my beignets from Morning Call next door. The price was very reasonable, but the coffee was too milky and tasted watery. They do offer 20% for students, and you can also get a free coffee with a purchase of a pastry.
google avatar

Renee B.

Yelp
I absolutely love this neighborhood coffee shop. They have made the best of pandemic times by assuring they go above and beyond to provide a safe environment for their customers and staff. They have the shopping area roped off from the coffee shop, and they only allow so many people inside at once. There is plenty of plexiglass to separate patrons from workers, and signs showing how to properly wear masks. A big plus! The coffee is always great. I usually order the Dirty Zombie with almond milk and whipped cream. It's a deliciously rich malted frozen coffee. I can literally drink it in 40 seconds flat -- it's that good! There are a limited variety of locally made pastries too and plenty of other natural or healthy snacks. If you're not scared of the dead, grab your treats and head to the small outdoor sitting area in the back, located next to a historic cemetery.
google avatar

Karleigh W.

Yelp
Cool location right next to a cemetery. The iced chai with oat milk was great. Skip the ginger iced tea (different from the sparking ginger tea, which sounded delicious but they were out of it). It was brewed hot and poured over ice but it was watery. Super reasonable prices. We didn't try any of the food options but they looked delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in with the family after seeing a video about this shop. Kids loved the hot chocolate! My white chocolate mocha was great also. Husband ordered the coffee cake and that was delicious and crumbly. Barista was super friendly and engaging. Patio area out back is very cool and overlooking a historic catholic cemetery. Loved the spooky vibes here!
google avatar

Yelp
After a 2 hour cemetery tour, a refreshing beverage was urgently needed. New Orleans humidity is real. Found this quirky coffee shop across the street from Charity Hospital cemetery / Katrina Memorial. Clever name for a shop that is surrounded by cemeteries. The iced dirty chai was delicious. I was told that the chai is home brewed. Very smooth flavor, no bitterness from the espresso shot. Exactly what I needed. It's connected to an Herb shop and has a nice outdoor seating in the back with a view of the cemetery behind it. If you have a chance, stop by. I really enjoyed the vibe.
google avatar

Bev P.

Yelp
Best matcha in the city! Unfortunately Apple Pay doesn't allow you to tip with their POS system however the Sunday morning barista Kace I believe their name is - was spectacularly wonderful - double gratuity next time!
google avatar

Dezmond N.

Yelp
This place pretty cool. It's got side ways bathroom sinks, zombie Jesus , and a nice shaded view looking into the tombs of the dead. What more can someone ask for while sipping on coffee?
google avatar

Alex R.

Yelp
Just the best. Coffee always hits. Staff is so friendly and accommodating. No more Starbucks or Dunkin' for me - shop local and support your neighborhood stores :) it tastes better and they appreciate your business! Must try any latte - add lavender if you're feelin funky
google avatar

Kimiko L.

Yelp
Cool people, easy ghostly vibes, and don't let the potty zombie get ya! Sit outside and chill with the peaceful views of the cemetery...
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
Ok super awesome location. Right by the cemetery where you and spirits can commune over some coffee and treats. This is a supremely small location that has outside seating in view of cemetery. Good drinks with some bakery items. Iced green tea is delicious. IF you have children SG is located a-joining a CBD/spirituality store. It gave me a chance to tell my daughter about Yoruba Orishas and such.
google avatar

Patricia R.

Yelp
Sacred Grinds is located at the end of Canal near City Park Avenue and the parking was a little tough. I had to circle the block and come back around. Luckily someone was just leaving. Inside it's really just a counter, and it's connected and open to the Herb Import Company. Service was pretty quick and my iced mocha was OK. Nothing too special. The cashier was nice and pretty quick so that was a plus. Also, the funky decor inside is pretty cool.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been able to enjoy Sacred Grinds for a few times throughout the past few years. I actually have to give a shout out to Joi B who first brought me here when I was being trained behind-the-scenes to be San Antonio's community manager before I was announced publicly. Sacred Grinds is such a cool spot and has a very distinct vibe. If you're into the spirituality of cemeteries and healing shops then you'll freakin' love this spot. I'm currently doing some laptop work in their back patio and the view is of the cemetery which it's adjacent too. What I enjoy about the back patio is that it is very calm and relaxing. There's a bathroom that's accessible and a fan to keep you cool even under the hottest of Summer days in the city. It's a very soothing spot and puts you at ease. One saying that I've always grown up with is that one of the very few things you're guaranteed in life is death. The coffee is solid here and for those of y'all who are students make sure to bring your IDs since they offer 20% off! For those who are searching for alternative milks at coffee spots they have almond and soy and are recently now offering oat milk. Gotta say it's quite solid as there's only a .50 cent upcharge for it. If you have some time make sure to check out the store it's situated within and grab some sage or anything else you need for your spiritual journey.

Yelp
Love love love this coffee shop. Quirky, pleasant and caring staff at the ready. Unique, delicious and delightful coffee drinks. Location is peaceful--next to a graveyard and every reason why "coffee to wake the dead" is the best slogan ever. Though I've been here countless times my most recent purchase was the Frozen Zombie; chocolate malt with espresso. It was so dang good, heavy on the malt and light on the sweetness, just my style. My friend ordered a blueberry and ginger fruit juice blend that he described as spicy! So, heavy on the ginger for those that love a good burn. Feeling like it might be a good day to go back for some more caffeine and continue to support financially, this business most recently impacted by canal street construction.

Yelp
Very cool concept and location for a coffee house. My husband and I stopped in on our way to city park and were pleasantly surprised by how good the coffee was. I had an americano and my husband had the cappuccino and we were both very happy with our coffee. We get our drinks to go but it appears they have outdoor seating that overlooks the graveyard which is really cool.

C L.

Yelp
I absolutely love coming here when I'm in New Orleans. Arguably the best chai latte I've ever had from a coffee shop (Moon chai). Great vibes while honoring the ones that have passed. (Name one of your drinks the Coffin-cino please!)
google avatar

Josh D.

Yelp
Top 3 best coffee spots in Nola to be honest. Extra star for the location and decor. New Orleans isn't a good coffee town (sorry I'm from the PNW where coffee is life) so this is high praise.
google avatar

Tara F.

Yelp
Ok this is a pretty cool coffee shop be definitely not for the faint of heart. It's backyard is a graveyard, as well it's neighbors across the street. Also, there is a voodoo type shop adjacent. But, if you love New Orleans then this shouldn't worry you! We got a hot mocha and hot shire chocolate Mocha. The shire chocolate mocha tasted like hot milk and sugar unfortunately. The mocha, though, was quite tasty. If I was in the area I would have no problem stopping here, however I probably wouldn't come out of my way if I weren't
google avatar

Heather H.

Yelp
I found this place through yelp suggestions for a coffee bar close-by. Imagine my surprise once I realized it was beside a cemetery. Not just any cemetery, but one of the oldest in the US. With a clever name, it proceeds just that. Religious relics and voodoo alike come together in this small but artsy coffee shop. It has a store with incense, cleansing needs, etc. I ordered a flat white and a ham and cheese croissant. The weather was warmer with a breeze so I enjoyed it outside while mesmerized by the cemetery and it's rich history. I'm glad to call New Orleans home.
google avatar

Yelp
Now that I'm a raging Walking Dead fan, an update to my review for Sacred Grinds seems especially relevant! No, really, I just need to talk about my love for all things zombie, all things New Orleans cemetery and all things coffee coffee coffeeeeee. Can you tell I'm caffeinated? This is my favorite coffee shop in town, hands-down (brains-down? That doesn't sound right). Coffee is great and cheap (Hello, Yelp check-in offer). Staff is very friendly. They have more snack options than before (including some raw Hail Merry and Superfood bars). And then you go out back. Don't worry. You're fenced in, kinda like Rick and the gang in that prison (but much less institutional). You cannot beat the ambiance. If quiet is what you're looking for, well, come on, it's all but inside a freaking *cemetery* for Argento's sake! Plus, I tend to get way more work done when I sit there staring at my future. To get all Peggy Lee on you, I find myself gazing at the weathered headstones thinking, "Is that all there is?" cuz if so... I better get back to finishing my masterpiece, that's all I'm saying.

Yelp
Take the Canal line streetcar with the "Cemeteries" sign all the way up to where they kick you off. A short stroll back down Canal will bring you to this hidden gem in plain sight. Very small with some seating out on the sidewalk, and a small fenced in area on the back porch over looking a cemetery (Not sure if the fence is for our protection or theirs) this coffee shop offers a unique environment to enjoy your daily java. It is a shared location with an herb shop so if that gets you worked up, get over it or just go back to Starbucks. It was warm for an early January afternoon so I switched up to an iced coffee. I have had more negative experiences with iced coffee than I have good, but this one definitely falls under the good category. It's served black and I couldn't quite figure out the flavor that was already included but it needed nothing else for my liking. I also selected a coffee cake pastry from their selection. I assume these are made off premise since there is absolutely know way outside of the Harry Potter universe that they are hiding a kitchen in this small place. The cake was a little on the dry side but had great flavor and went nicely with the iced coffee. I will definitely be back to this little gem, probably earlier in the day though to try out the hot stuff. I should also point out that the service was very friendly, quick as possible considering he was by himself, and never a sense of pretentiousness as you may find in other locations. Sacred Grinds is also dog friendly so take a long walk and reward yourself, and your dog, with a stop off before heading back into town.
google avatar

Jen B.

Yelp
Interesting location right near the end of the streetcar line and near the cemeteries. It was a quick pop in for a coffee and pastries but it did the trick. It's tiny in there with about 4 tables outside so most people were getting things to go. Very good though!!
google avatar

Shannon W.

Yelp
Talk about location, location, location. I biked my way to Sacred Grinds and I ended up having to lock it to a cemetery gate because this coffee shop is cemetery adjacent, and if that's your kind of thing (and it should be) Sacred Grinds is the place to visit. There is an area to drink your coffee that is literally in the cemetery, and it just wooed me, what can I say? All I can add is that the employee recommended me a 'Moon Chai' and it was one of the most delicious chai beverages I've ever had. Sacred Grinds really has it all.
google avatar

Bailey C.

Yelp
Great coffee. Very clean. Thank you! Service was prompt. It smelled nice. Also a cool vibe. I have no complaints and would recommend and return for more coffee.
google avatar

Tammy L.

Yelp
I've been on a coffee hunt in New Orleans, and sadly to say - I haven't found much. Maybe I haven't exactly had the time to explore the city much yet, but there are definitely less cafes than I had expected. One decent cafe I found was Sacred Grinds, a cafe attached to an herb shop. Is it bad if I say this store has a hippie vibe? I rather like it, actually, with all their statuettes and art deco... The coffee was aromatic and not acidic at all, and they even give you an extra shot! Though the coffee isn't specially sourced or roasted in house, their coffee is decent. Though they don't quite acknowledge you when you want to make an order, they're laid back and friendly for the most part. If I remember correctly, they also serve tea and smoothies. Though the coffee wasn't bad, the location is a bit out of the way (by the cemetery, so unless you're in the area, I wouldn't go out of my way to procure a latte.
google avatar

April C.

Yelp
I usually get the dirty zombie which is rlly good. (altho they always say they're out of whipcream..) but today wanted to try something different. so I tried a smoothie. theyre very expensive and not good at all. the batista was kind and remade the drink but it was still very bad , the owner should just take the smoothies off the menu because they're terrible. they should just stick to coffee . if u want a good smoothie for the same price but even bigger size go to smoothie time on Labarre rd
google avatar

Justin M.

Yelp
I think one of the walking dead got a job here. Service was sad and unfriendly. Coffee was almost as bad. Apparently he doesn't drink the coffee here either with how droopy he was. Pretty soon I would think there will be a tomb stone in front for this place! Won't be back. He even had the nerve to say you have to tell me a tip if you're using a card. That's easy none now go grunt off into the daylight. The super tiny patio with a view of the cemetery is interesting though. Knowledgeable barista?! Someone wrote Haha yea it seems they took an herb employee since it is the same building and stuck him there.
google avatar

TiffanyJo P.

Yelp
Love to swing by this place on the unexpected day coming home (or going to) midcity! Also not too terrible to be attached to a solid smoke shop with all kinds of goodies to peruse while sipping on something strong or sweet.
