Where to Eat and Drink in Biddeford, Maine - Eater Boston

"Admittedly, Biddeford’s still a bit light on late-night offerings, but you’ll find some gems open till 9 or 10 p.m., including Sacred Profane Brewing, which has two floors, a patio, and makes just two superb beers — a dark and a light lager. The Czech-style tankpub (a nod to the tankovna pubs of the Czech Republic) is a project by beer power couple Brienne Allan — former brewer and production manager of Salem’s Notch Brewing and a beer industry-abuse whistleblower — and Michael Fava, former brewer at Newcastle’s Oxbow Brewing and current beverage director of Portland’s famed Novare Res beer bar. Seasonal cocktails and wines from Slovakia and the Czech Republic round out Sacred Profane’s beverage list." - Stasia Brewczynski

Very interesting Czech style pub. The beers were very good and loved the interesting way they pour and foam. They have several shanty options and I tried the one with tequila, it was light and not overpowering, very good. Beers are served in pub style large mugs. Food overall was very tasty. Pretzel was warm and soft. Smash burger was absolutely delicious, juicy, melty and perfect. The sausage plate was good but didn’t feel like a complete meal. The sweet Kokach was a little disappointing. The filling was good but the pastry was dry. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. Overall I like this brewery and would return, the only negative is that the service was very slow and it was hard to get our server’s attention.

Google
beer was great, food was tasty, taproom was really nice, but the service was subpar which unfortunately tainted my experience. not sure if it was because we had a few non-drinkers in the group and didn’t order a full meal or what, but we felt rushed out of there even with a half full beer and food still on the plate. it’s a shame considering the beer / food was great and probably would have ordered another if we hadn’t felt unwelcome.

We had a great time at Sacred Profane in Biddeford. The food was pretty good—highlights for us were the Rodeo Burger and the kielbasa with fries. The real standout, though, was the beer. Both the amber and the pale were excellent—crisp, flavorful, and well-crafted. The atmosphere is also worth noting: go on a nice day to enjoy the fresh open-air vibe downstairs, or come at night to check out the cozy lounge and beer hall upstairs. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. The staff were also super nice.

Truly a hidden gem! Sacred Profane nails the trifecta of great beer, amazing food, and kind staff. It’s the only spot in the U.S. doing tank-pour lagers, where the beer is suspended from tanks and flows with gravity directly to the luger tap. They serve two types of lager beer AND have an extensive cocktail, wine and shandy list. The lobster roll with smoked trout roe, pierogis, and grilled cauliflower easily count among the best bar food we’ve ever had. The staff were so friendly and went out of their way to accommodate my weird allergy. Pro Tips - Ask about the tankpour setup—it’s worth learning about - Plenty of parking in front - Don’t miss the lobster roll - Lots of seating inside, outside and upstairs!

i’ll keep this short: the food was delicious. the drinks were great. but we never got to finish our meal. our server never put in our full order and after waiting 1.5 hours we had to ask him about it to which he said “oh yeah”. no one bothered to make sure our order was being prepared. we were straight up ignored — only to have the issue blamed on their faulty POS system. the entire experience left a bad taste in my mouth. exceptionally bad service, but the food was great(at least what they managed to serve us). also, what is up with the blaring music? they literally have 2 songs playing at the same time at full volume. this makes for a BAD atmosphere. thank you for your attention to this matter!

Google
Very cool little Czech place off the beaten path. Their in house brews are great, and the menu has some authentic flavor, and a great set of options for a more refined palate. I've been there a few times now, and must say I do love this place. I likely wouldn't bring my picky eaters here, since there seems to be an option for mustard, mayo, or sauerkraut on mostly everything.

Google
We waited 2 hours before finally asking our server where our food was. He told us he never put in our order and blamed it on the point of sale system – which is insane since we only had two dishes! If the system wasn’t working, just write down the order! About an hour in, someone who wasn’t even our waiter checked on us and asked about the items we hadn’t received. We STILL waited another hour, and they never put in our order! The music situation was bizarre too. There were literally two songs playing at the same time! One track was ear-splitting – it sounded like a metal band rehearsing in the kitchen at full volume with amplifier squeak and everything, ON TOP of another song playing through the restaurant speakers. This was an exceptionally bad experience, mainly due to the service. We eventually just left when it became clear the kitchen had fallen apart and wasn’t even capable of serving us our order. I can’t recall ever having service this bad. It’s a shame because the beer was good and the menu items looked promising. Wish we actually got to finish our meal.

A bit of Prague in Biddeford! Fantastic authentic beer! The food is very good, especially the sausages. Staff is super knowledgeable about the beer. Try the special foam pour.

Yelp
On a guys night out my buddy & I decided to check out this location since neither of us had tried it - and I'm glad we did! I had the double smash burger (it was what I expected) & ordered steak tartar as an app - which was great. Ordered the layered lager & then their light lager - I enjoyed them both. My friend ordered the poutine but didn't enjoy the types of fries that came with it (too thin / crunchy - made eating it a fight) - but enjoyed the gravy. Service was great, it wasn't very busy so service was very prompt - our waitress was pleasant & knowledgeable. Chef came out & asked us how our food was - which was just a great personal touch. The establishment itself is pretty neat, big garage type doors facing the road - this place is usually slammed in the summer because they open up to outside seating (which are tables). This time of year it's similar to cafeteria style seating on the first floor, a series of long tables & there's no seats at the bar. There's also an upstairs that I didn't get to see, so I'm not sure what that seating looks like (I wish I had). Definitely a place I'll be back to, I feel like I missed out not trying their more unique menu items (like the pierogi's, beer braised sausages & kolache).

Yelp
There are few places that leave me legitimately happy. This place exceeded in that regard! Highest quality, legit lagers served by a great staff. Food options aren't cheap but are worth every penny. Sacred Profane is a gem! We will be back soon!

Yelp
Friendly staff, great beer, food, and community events... what's there not to love?! Every time I go to Sacred Profane, I love it more than the last time. They have perfected the art of Czech beer. Although they only have a light and a dark lager -- with a few variations of each, by adding more foam, mixing them, etc -- they really have mastered these two beers. Less is more at Sacred Profane, and you can tell the team behind the magic has focused on quality over quantity. The venue itself is one of my favorites. It's cozy and welcoming, with outdoor seating during the warmer months. The staff is always so amicable and helpful. If you're a beer drinker, you have to visit Sacred Profane. I can't wait for the Portland location!

Yelp
We stopped in after a nice but chilly walk at Ferry beach and were pleasantly surprised. The staff was just about the best I've ever seen at a brewery, super attentive, knowledgeable and patient. At their suggestions I got the smoked dark lager and a sumac shandy, very different but they were both super good! This place only makes 2 beers but they come in all sorts of ways and sizes so you can hardly get bored. My husband got a cocktail he LOVED. We also got a snack which was tasty yet standard, but their brautwurst was so good. The space was cozy and they have a super nice upstairs for events. They also have a big patio, but its november so we didn't sit there. Overall what a solid spot!

Yelp
I go here every time I'm in Biddeford as I love their beer. The recent visit was even better though as the food was really next level for a brewery! Savory Kolache, Beef Carpaccio and the Lobster Arancini were out of this world! Service is always great, so that's the same.

Yelp
Such a cool brewery in Biddeford. We were at a nearby brewery, Lucky Pigeon and the staff recommended we stop here and try their beer and get a Allen's and milk. We walked over and absolutely loved the great vibe at this welcoming industrial brewery. A few large communal tables inside, seating outside with open garage doors... beautiful day with a warm breeze to complement the cold beer. Shiny copper lukr tabs hanging above the bar for their two beers, pale and a dark larger. I started with their pale larger, full mug with three fingers of foam... so delicious and rich with flavor. Tried their Allen's and milk... dark foam and a shot of ACB... wow a mug of pure joy. These lovely people know exactly what they are doing! Staff was so cool and welcoming, their motto is cold larger and warm hearts and it fits perfectly! Love their values and their beer. Brewer Brienne was so nice and talked with us. Also enjoyed a shot ... great birthday celebration. I am such a fan of this place, that the following day we stopped back for more beer and a few cases to take back to NY. This is a must stop whenever we are in town!

Yelp
I was in the area for work, and looking for a quick drink between meetings. I actually saw Sacred Profane on Instagram and was really excited to try it out! This little spot packs a big punch. Their beer selection is awesome (they are all seriously good) and I love the signature foam on each one. Don't sleep on their snacks - they are top notch! We tried the pimento cheese dip and fries and loved them both. The service was great, and the windows were open as it was a gorgeous day out. I can't wait to come back again next time I am in the area!

Yelp
This place is absolutely adorable! It's going to be an awesome addition to the up and coming trendy Biddeford. We sat outside because it was a beautiful day and as we were seated we were told, the food outside is not the same as inside. We could only order snacks and nothing more. Very strange since the whole wall is open to the outside so it's basically the outside. Our waitress greeted us and asked our order, not offering any information about the restaurant or brewery or asking if we'd been there before. I asked for a quick rundown since I was from out of town and wanted to make sure we ordered the best locally made items. I'd recommend this place to anyone who asked, but I'd also recommend that they serve the entire menu to the entire restaurant.
google avatar

Krista R.

Yelp
Good vibes, average food, creamy beers. The crab Rangoons on special were off in flavor but the pimento dip was decent. The beers were dreamy and creamy goodness.

Yelp
I have driven by this local neighborhood spot so many times and thought it was just beer. Well, I stopped in to buy a gift card for a beer loving friend and I was pleasantly surprised! Not is it cozy and a great spot to meet with friends, the staff was super nice and happy to assist. The menu looks great and the items I saw others snacking on looked SO GOOD! I had to scope out their Yelp page to check out the menu. While I may not be a beer drinking gal, but I love trying and supporting new local spots! Those pretzels and pimento dip looked real good!

Yelp
The beers are delicious. Full stop. The pale lager is the perfect beer. I could drink it forever and ever. I love the aesthetics of the brewery. Very clean look. We ate before we got there, not knowing they have food. We did stay a while and got the Spinach and artichoke dip, it was awesome. The rest of the food menu looked good too. As for beers on draft they only have 2 beers. Pale and dark lagers. But to be honest, that's all they need. They had a few canned beers as well as a few wine options, so it's not just for lager lovers. I'd the brewery was any closer to my house than a 4 hour drive and a ferry ride, I'd probably be going here every weekend.

Yelp
Great staff, great space, great drinks. Super cool upstairs where they have occasional metal shows. Very clean and trendy first floor. Variety of excellent beers and a few cocktails for the non beer drinkers.

Yelp
Visited and was so happy to find a parking spot right out front! They also had a lot of open seats until we left, then it was slammed. The downstairs is small and filled up really fast. Both lagers are very good, I suggest trying both. They did not have food which was disappointing because we were very hungry. However the beers held us over! The staff was all super friendly, chatty and welcoming. It had a very nice neighborhood joint vibe. I will definitely return and look forward to the food menu debut.

Sam B.

Yelp
very good spot, great cider, burgers and fries are better than the hamburger stand. ambience is great family, friendly vibe or just a guys night out . Love the option for a upstairs venue just to rent out for a larger gatherings or a party.
google avatar

Haley B.

Yelp
I love the atmosphere, service, and beer. They have a limited menu, but the food was cooked perfectly. This is a sit down place and the experience enjoyable. Our server was not hesitant to ask if we had any questions and she was super informational! Will be returning again, again, and again.

Yelp
Loved this place ! I'd read about the unique pours ... and beers were great. The location and service was top notch and we had a great time watching the rain pass by ... even got a rainbow in the experience.

Yelp
Sacred Profane is truly the heart of Biddeford with a warm and welcoming environment with unique upscale but comfortable atmosphere, excellet lager, unique cocktails, wine selection, top notch food and friendly staff. A great place to grab a drink by yourself or bring your family.

Yelp
From the start of when this place was being talked about opening it caught my attention. It is a brewery that has two beers (a pale lager and a dark lager) that can be offered in a variety of ways in different pour methods. This place is a tankpub based off places in the Czech Republic and is actual the first of its kind in Maine and even the USA in general. The special tank/pour system was setup by a Czech company and is as authentic as you can find in the US. I can imagine the food area can be quite packed during the busy summer days but we were able to just walk in and sit right away with plenty of open spots. I appreciate the fact they make just two beers so they can just focus on making them the best they possible can. They have done just that and have made two of the better lagers in their respective style that I have tried. The food we tried paired very well with the beers as well, I would easily recommend either the double smash burger or beer braised sausage. Great addition to the growing Biddeford food scene and a brewery worth visiting for how unique it is. A welcome change compared to the IPA heavy offerings found elsewhere.

Yelp
**I want to start this review by stating that I did not eat food, as there was a significant wait to sit downstairs for food, so this review is solely based on my experience at the facility and the beers. Upon opening, Sacred Profane had a lot of hype, as it was the first tank pub to open in North America, and specifically had Czech-based employees come to install the tanks to brew a light and dark lager. One weekend, a group of friends and I decided to go and check out all the hype and taste some beers. The venue is gorgeous with copper tanks situated above the bar, dark accented walls and a semi-open kitchen with tables. My friends and I went to the bar and I started with the light lager. Little did we know, there was also an upstairs space with tables and benches, so we decided to go there to sip on our brews. The ambiance upstairs felt a little unfinished compared to the downstairs, and it didn't have the home-y warmth that we were expecting. Nonetheless, we sat and drank our beers. The lager was light and refreshing. Once done, I wanted to try the dark lager, which again, was good...but didn't totally blow my mind considering that those were the two beers that they focus on. Maybe it's me? Maybe it's because I don't drink lagers regularly? I just didn't find a reason to come back, as I feel like I could have had the same lagers elsewhere at another brewery. Maybe eventually I will go back to try the food and my opinion might change, but I left feeling like "Okay, I think I checked this box off" without feeling a total need to go back.

Yelp
Sooooo much hype surrounded this brewery opening, and I'm so thrilled that it is super well-deserved!!! They offer 2 beers from their lukr taps (a pale lager and a dark larger, with low ABVs) were absolutely stunning. Truly exceptional- so crisp and clean... my husband is about to make the pale lager his go-to all day beer to replace his normal lower ABV options. They also offer great options for cider, wine, seltzer, as well as NA options. The space is industrial, yet welcoming. I loved the open garage doors and the copper taps hanging above the bar look awesome. Service, even on their second day open, was flawless. We had to wait about 15 minutes for a table to eat, but were able to grab a beer and drink upstairs until the table was ready. Now the food..... omg. Every single bite was delectable! The cretons is an absolute must-order! Especially for folks looking for the dish reminiscent of the one they grew up eating. The salad (with dorito dust, like what) was exceptional! And the pork schnitzel and potato salad paired perfectly with the beers. Finally, the poutine. This is how you do poutine!!!! It was layered with lots of cheese curds and gravy. Along with double-fried fries...I can't say enough about how good this was. I am so pumped that this spot is finally open- I would HIGHLY recommend stopping in for a visit.

Yelp
Alright, the name caught our attention and the pictures of oysters on the site brought us in. Contrary to the images the name evokes, it was light and bright. It was immaculate. They have 2 of their own brews and they are good and drinkable if light. I was disappointed by the depth and breadth of the menu and there were no oysters or other seafood. The hot dogs we had were interesting and flavorful. Definitely good quality. Not really a place to linger.

CJ R.

Yelp
Loved it. Small, with communal seating. Lots of outdoor space and great staff. Burger was perfect and the beer was delicious.

Erin G.

Yelp
Waiter was amazing, incredibly knowledgeable. Ask for Kyle made our whole night. Had great recommendations on food and drinks.

Yelp
This is long overdue, but this is such a hidden gem!!!!! The outside is sleek and once you walk in, you're greeted by amazing staff which makes it super cozy and welcoming. I visited this location back in March, hoping they'd be able to host our rehearsal/welcome party for our wedding in May. Mercy was such a pleasure to work with!! We were able to use the upstairs space that she reserved for us and they even helped curate a menu of items to serve for us. She was really great at communicating with us and ensuring that the day of our party would go off without any hiccups, since we live out of state. The upstairs space is perfect for hosting something casual and you can pretty much transform it however you want, which is awesome. The staff we had serving us in the upstairs area were all so friendly and attentive, especially for having to deal with such a large group. The day of the party we were served dips, calamari, sliders, pimento cheese, fries. All of these items were a hit with our friends and super delicious. I think the star of the show was the sliders - sosososoooo good! Their dark lager was a fan favorite but they also offer other drinks if you're not much of a beer drinker. Definitely check this place out if you're from the area for casual brews and bites, but if you're just visiting definitely put this place on your stops!

Yelp
Good beer, good food, good tunes! Downstairs area is a couple larger communal tables, some tighter two-tops (good for making table neighbor friends, probably awful for having a fight with your SO), a few window seats, a small bar where they pour the beers from those gorgeous tanks (no seats) and the open kitchen. There's also a large beer hall kind of space upstairs where you order from QR codes and they bring you drinks, maybe food?? Or that's what I read on Insta anyways. It seems like others mention walking up to the "bar" which wouldn't really occur to me the way it's laid out and because our server grabbed us right away. Not sure if that's encouraged or not... maybe it was just the timing of our visit. I sadly cannot remember our servers name, but she was a woman in her maybe mid-late 40s (don't kill me if that's wrong!), thin, dark hair, and she was amazing. That next level where before you have time to think of something like, I wish this empty plate wasn't still here, she's already on it. We didn't wait or want for anything and she was a lot of fun. They don't post a menu online for whatever reason, but you've probably seen most of the things reviewed here or Google. Curried weiner, smash burger, schnitzel, there's a classy spinach artichoke dip, bread and butter, pimento cheese, poutine, beef tartare. Other than the salad and maybe ceviche (maybe I made that up??), this is heavy fare, but delicious. Kudos to somehow being the only restaurant in southern Maine that understands what a smash burger is... you smash the burger. I bet it's a ton of fun in the summer with the garage doors open. Grab a case of beer on your way out!

Yelp
Everything was awesome!!! Great food, beer and atmosphere. Staff was super friendly. Will define returning very soon.

Yelp
What an amazing little gem in downtown Biddeford. Easy parking, really cool atmosphere, amazing. employees like chef Dylan and server Kate, I can't recommend this place enough. They were so friendly and the food was incredible. We're pretty old so we've eaten a lot of places, and my husband had the Smashburger as did the two friends I was with, and they said it was the best they've had in their entire life. Biddeford has some really cool up-and-coming restaurants and this is one of the absolute best!
google avatar

Corene C.

Yelp
Cool space, super friendly staff, great beer and food! Everything we had here was delicious.
google avatar

Joe H.

Yelp
First visit for us and the service was fantastic, wish it were warmer and doors could be opened. Will be back. 2 beers done right. Only saw they had an upstairs after we left. Great ambiance, and a huge bonus, there is a small vinyl record store next door. Biddeford is hopping, my town of Saco is not.

Grace K.

Yelp
Brian made an excellent Woodford Reserve Manhattan. All the staff was quite friendly. You could sit inside at tables or outside at benches.
google avatar

Daniel L.

Yelp
I know yelp isn't the place to review breweries but I had to find a place to give their service it's props. The beer is amazing but the service is really what makes this place special. I never had to leave my seat and I never had to wait for a beer because the service was so attentive. And on top of it all the space is beautiful. Oh and the smash burger was unreal. Sacred profane checks every box!
google avatar

Melody P.

Yelp
Sacred Profane definitely lived up to all of the buzz that they have been generating since they arrived in Biddeford! The dark lager had great depth yet was still light and crisp. The pimento cheese spread was delicious with just the right amount of zing from the hot sauce. The smash burger was perfectly cooked and very juicy. I loved the burger sauce as well. The service was very friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about the brewing process. We can't wait to return!

Nora H.

Yelp
I love this place! Great vibes always, beer is so clean and delicious, can hardly drink anything else anymore. Delish food too!
google avatar

Gladys M.

Yelp
What a great brewery. From the moment I walked in I was greeted with a smile. Their food is excellent! Wasn't expecting that from a brewery. The beer is great too. I also had a glass of wine. The decor & vibe is fresh & industrial.
google avatar

Ben S.

Yelp
Loving it! Great beer: simple and clean. They just opened and it looks like this place is going to do great. Owners are awesome and have had success with thier other business, Lorne. They are very knowledgeable and a great asset to the Biddeford community!
google avatar

Ray N.

Yelp
The dark lager was amazing! Love the vibe, the staff was so friendly. The schnitzel was great too.

Alexandra S.

Yelp
Great beer, wonderful waitstaff and the set up looks fabulous. The food menu is ridiculously pretentious and I didn't enjoy any of what we ordered. wine was $12 a glass which was infuriating. The food was terrible and also expensive.

Richard F.

Yelp
We arrived just after Sunday noon opening, hoping for an Eastern European food/beer match. Server said they no longer have schnitzel on the menu, and the short ribs (listed) were not available. The dark beer and bottled cider were good, though.

Barry H.

Yelp
Finally; this is what lagers should taste like. How soon can we get this in the pubs? You will not be disappointed, even if you don't usually go for lagers.
