Where to Find Fried Chicken and Jojos in Portland | Eater Portland

"Up until 2018, this video poker bar near Mall 205 shared the same ownership as Reel M Inn, the inner southeast dive, famous for its fried chicken. Supposedly, Sadie Mae’s uses the same recipe, and there’s no question the chicken is well-seasoned with ultra-crackly skin. The massive jojos are so thickly cut, eating a wedge is practically like snacking on a whole baked potato." - Rebecca Roland

I really love this bar, locally owned My bar tender was Ella. She made my husband the best long island ice tea , since we been together here in Portland Oregon anyways , we been together going on 13years this coming up September 1st . I had the best lemon drop on the ne side of Portland. Also I ordered breakfast biggest portions of food especially for a bar. I ordered chicken fried steak with gravy and a biscuits and gravy came with it as well as homemade breakfast potatoes and 2 over easy eggs and a order of jalapeno poppers and those were the hugest jalapeno poppers I ever seen in Portland and were delicious. Stop in here if you're looking for a friendly non judgemental non racial bar. You won't regret it. Believe me

Google
Don't let the exterior fool you, this place has some really good fried chicken. The chicken is pretty clean and comes out piping hot. The sad part was that they ran out of jojos, but the chicken does make up for it. I even had some the next day and it was still good. This place does give Reel Em Inn a run for the money.

My partner and I come here sometimes late at night and play a game or 2 of pool!! The bartender is always nice and always gotten great service, not to mention the customers (regulars) are always fun to be around! We usually take food home and it’s always been great!

Google
Jenny is one of the best bartenders I've ever had!

Even tho it's in Mall205 I think of it as a local bar. Good drinks. Can't comment on food. Pool, Video Poker. They had more video games but, seem to be renovating. Fun.

I rarely drink or go to bars anymore so I don't know if I'm the best judge of how great one is....I can say that I was there to help a friend sell some clothes and he did make some money. I ordered one well Vodka and was shocked I got a little buzz from it. People were nice....no drama....I didn't try the food or anything....

Yelp
Another place in Portland that has some tasty fried chicken, but too bad they ran out of jojos. The fried chicken tastes pretty clean and super good when it comes out of the fryer. I even had some the following day and it was still good. The bartender was pretty nice and provided us with some refreshing drinks while waiting for our food. This place is definitely a contender with Reel Em Inn.

Yelp
Was there last week and went outside to smoke and someone cashed out my machine which had over $500 in and some cashed it ! When I asked the a guy the bartender said I was starting a fight! I will never go back to this bar again!

Yelp
What happened to this place? Weve been regulars here for 6 years. Not sure who the new owner and what has changed is but this place is like a crack den where the weirdos come out at night. We used to come here every weekend for the chicken and hang out with friends. But it seems like we stepped in to a whole other world, the new bartender we hadn't seen before wasn't wearing a mask so many mask less people coughing and sniffing. It as not hygienic. The place is filthy. We left and don't plan on ever being back

Yelp
I grew up in rural Oregon in the mid-80s and it seems like back then every crappity-ass gas station in every little podunk town had great fried chicken and jojos (maybe this was some kind of Logger's Delight, I dunno.) Now it's like you really have to look for a place that gets it right. My wife and I discovered Reel M Inn just before they temporarily closed indefinitely, so we only got to try them once. My understanding is that until a few years ago, Sadie's had the same owners, so they essentially served the same version of chicken and jojos. So, how does Sadie Mae's compare to what is widely viewed as the best fried chicken and jojos in Portland? Very well. The chicken was super crispy, but it didn't really taste that well seasoned. It was good, but not quite as good as Reel M Inn. The jojos, however, were outstanding. Possibly the best jojos I've had in my life. Perfect amount of seasoning, and they weren't heavily dredged (coated with flour, etc.) just the seasoning and the potatoes. Perfect. Something that was a bit surprising was that neither the chicken nor the jojos were greasy at all. Other reviewers have mentioned they use an air fryer, so that makes sense. I'll definitely be back, if only cause they're closer to home, but Sadie Mae's is absolutely a worthy alternative to Reel M Inn.

Yelp
Oh my word! I miss good fried chicken. This is it! And I have a service dog (a real one) we feel safe here. Now let's talk. The chicken is breaded just so, not over dredged and seasoned perfectly. I avoid salty and I never feel like I'm dining in a salt lick. The worst thing is over salted chicken fried in old grease! That NEVER happens here. U Now let's talk about that first bite. You have three choices: rush in and burn your mouth on the most crispy, piping hot chicken ever, display impulse control and wait for it to cool off, or use a fork and strip bites. I suggest the last option so you can experience this delicious succulent wonder at it's finest. If you're into jojos these are huge and delicious, I get the upgrade to the onion rings because they are crispy and delicious. The one drawback: There is one staff member who is fairly rude when it comes to service animals and I kind of stopped going because of her.

Yelp
Granted at first glance one might think Sadies is just another Video Poker (lottery) strip mall bar.... but step inside and you will find MUCH MUCH more! This little Eastside gem is one part sports bar, one part lottery bar, and all parts bomb fried chicken and jo-jo's bar! High ceilings, new owners that treat you like family, newly recovered pool table, free darts, three pinball machines (including the ever popular Medieval Madness), and featuring fried chicken a la The Reel Em Inn! Yep, that right the previous owners - brought their famous chicken along and the recipe stayed with the bar upon sale --. Why wait hours and hours across town for some tasty greasy love when you have the secret right here in Gateway?.... The vibe is great, eclectic, and truly all are welcome and all feel like family. Cone check out Sadies--- you wont be disappointed.

Yelp
Nice staff and fun group of people, a very clean place as well! I didn't try their fried chicken but hear it's good.

Yelp
I love this bar it's my main spot! Lots of room, tons of tv screens a pool table but most importantly the chicken and Jojo's are purrrfect! Amazing service and a loud jukebox with seating for many and Video Poker!

Yelp
I'm not above a great dive bar- but this one just didn't do it for me. Couple of pool tables, lots of lotto machines, and apparently tasty chicken? The bartender was super friendly and attentive which deserves a star right there. Seems to be a hoppin' spot... I just don't get the attraction. Happy hour: $1.50 for well shots $2.50 for well drinks $4.00 cocktail specials No draft beer available- surprising in our craft brew Mecca.

Yelp
Ok, first let's get this straight. This review is for the Chicken experience only. You see, I was a patron of Reel-m-Inn before they were "cool", before the 2nd best dive bar in America publicity attracted every 20-30 something wanna-be-cool within 10 miles making it crazy busy. When I heard this place had the same owner and SAME CHICKEN, I had to try it out. The good: The equipment, the chicken, and the six pack of sauces are exactly like Reel-m-Inn, just close your eyes and you are there. The cocktails are also very fair pours. 5 for 5 here. The bad: It lacks the charm of Reel-m-Inn since it's more of a video poker shack than a bar. Located next to a dollar tree store in a sketchy area, you question your parking choice as you exit your car into a world of EBT dependants that are at this dollar store because they didn't want to dress up for Walmart. A feeling of safety as you pass through the doors with the "bathrooms for customer use only" sign on the door. Then an individual with a backpack enters during my meal and asks where the bathroom is in an obvious need to fulfill an addiction. After being denied the individual throws a verbal tantrum at the bartender and customers, makes eye contact with me and says "gambling ain't my thing" and leaves. It is a place where having a CHL allows you to enjoy your meal. 2/5 here, would be better except for the creepy factor. Was it worth it? Hell yes, I can get my chicken fix without the hassle. I plan on returning soon for some eat/drink/people watching where Portland is authentically wierd.

Yelp
Three awesome pinball machines right up front, a full bar with ~8 beers on tap, and "free coffee for paying customers + lottery players ONLY". I assume I went during happy hour, because my PBR was only $1.75. Pinball machines have low replay scores and are operated by Quarterworld.

Yelp
Great food and drinks and the machines hit on a regular basis and I love the staff is great especially miss Darby and miss Pam

Yelp
Busy bar with emphasis on lottery: video lottery, keno. Very busy and active around 1pm on a Friday afternoon. They are related to Reel 'Em Inn: so if you like their Chicken - it's the same stuff. A few TVs featuring sports, country music playing, a variety of seating: bar, sofas, one or two tables. The bar was full. No draft beer, just bottles and cans. Hard Liq of course. Upbeat and friendly vibe - pretty good personality for a bar in a strip mall. Think they have Karaoke at night.

Yelp
I went to Sadie Mae's only AFTER it was purchased by the Newer Owner. Recently, ... I had a Gin Drink here... the Bartendress said that she thought I should be able to Taste the Gin before I got a Whole Drink,... so she poured Two Samples of Different Gins for me to try. Well,... they Both Tasted about the Same to me,... I'm NOT a Fan. Oh well. I had Club Soda with my Gin.... it was Bombay.... I guess. I watched her pour it... but I thought that Bombay Sapphire was Blue?! Anyway,... I prefer Club Soda to Tonic.... so I had a Gin and Club Soda Drink. I got a Couple of Slices of Lime as my Garnish. The Bartendress said that she'd only been working there as a Bartender/ Bartendress for about Two Weeks. That Gin and Club Soda was Very Strong! I only had about Four Small Sips. I like being Sober most of the Time, you know. I finally met One of the " Regulars " at Sadie Mae's... he and I had a Good Conversation about him, his life, and some of the Things that have happened to him.... mostly when he was younger and living Out of State. It turns out that I'm a few Years Older than he is. He recognized the Queen Latifah song " UNITY " that I played on the AMI Electric Jukebox.... right away. He was wearing a Medium Pink Tie... with his Button Up shirt...and a Beavers, remember THAT Older Local Baseball Team?... Jersey on over Everything. He was also wearing a Hat,... it was a Nice Medium Gray Pinstripe Fedora. He said he was on his Way Downtown for Sushi. It must be One of the Newer Sushi Restaurants.... because I've NEVER heard of it before. And, I've been to A LOT of different Sushi Restaurants in South East Portland, Oregon. I like to Play the Oregon Lottery here as well. I think this is the Place where I won Two Times in a Month... a few Years Back... I check my Lottery Tickets here frequently. It was NOT the Huge Amount, though. There is a Golf Video Game here, by the Front Door,... although, I've never played it. I hear it's Very Popular, though. Oh, and if you like to Play Pool... there is a Pool Table. And it's NOT near the Wall, either.

Yelp
Good neighborhood bar. Video poker if you like. Pool, fried chicken, and good service. If you're shopping at Mall 205 or out to meet some good people, stop by.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I LOVE this bar. We come in often and consider ourselves regulars. The bartenders are great but the regulars truly make this bar. The new owner is making changes that have all been nice except the loss of Steve. He's an amazing bartender that needs to be brought back!! Sadie maes is a little family and we want to keep it that way!

Yelp
This is a very excellent restaurant and bar. Located inside the mall 205 Shopping Center, this is very excellent. Came here four times in a row, and boy do I love it. Their award winning chicken is extremely excellent. If you've been to hour glass pub and eatery, it tastes similarly, but almost has the exact same flavor, if not better. The bartender, Kim, is extremely fun, and playful. She is also very friendly, and very attentive at all times to make sure that your food is doing well, and that you are having a great time. One of the most wonderful things I love about this place is the pool table, you only pay $.75 a game, but it's worth it. They also have some video poker machines, and lottery games as well. They also have the game walk like an Egyptian, which is one of my family members favorite songs. Unfortunately for me, because I have a vision impairment, the video poker machines wouldn't do me any good, being by myself, and not being able to see the screen, but if you have someone citedwith you, then you are definitely in luck. I also got to try some tasty hotdogs, and boy are they fresh and good. Overall if you live less than 0.3 miles away, you are definitely in luck, if you want to stop by thisplace close to home, with a pool table, and everything you need.

Yelp
So I went in last night to a place I have been going to for 10 years and was told because I don't tip I am no longer welcome at this bar. They told me I could not record in the bar told the young woman it's my first amendment right she blew that off there was no signs posted. The main reason we got kicked out was because we don't tip and that's a lie. I will be posting this if you would like to see I have it all on go pro and I will not be going back to this place and I don't recommend you do ever again because what they do to people who have been going there for 8 years and has seen 40 bartenders get get let go I am very disappointed at management and the customer serves

Night R.

Yelp
Bartender sneezed in her open hand, wiped it on her pants then served a lady a drink handing her an uncovered straw. Gross!!!!

Nick P.

Yelp
The bartenders and chicken are amazing. The owner is friendly and fun, there are lots of regulars.
