If you’re craving an authentic Thai family meal, Sang Thatien is the place to go. Walking into this spot feels like being invited into a local Thai home for dinner, with such a warm and cozy atmosphere that instantly makes you feel at ease. There’s no signboard outside, so I hesitated for a moment before stepping in, but that hidden vibe only adds to its charm.
This place seems to be a favorite among locals because the night I visited, the small dining area was filled entirely with Thai guests. I heard it’s so popular that they’re fully booked until the end of the year. They don’t have a fixed menu, which I found so unique. Instead, the chef serves whatever they’ve prepared for the day, and this month’s dishes were inspired by Isaan cuisine, the region famous for Somtum. The table was soon covered with a variety of dishes, each one looking more delicious than the last. I wanted to try everything, but there was so much food that I ended up too full to finish it all, which was a bit of a shame.
The dish that stood out the most for me was the strawberry salad paired with caramelized pork. It was such an unexpected combination, yet the flavors worked so well together. Another highlight was the durian curry. I was a bit nervous to try it at first because durian can be intense, but it turned out to be amazing. The durian added a subtle, creamy richness with a light fragrance, and it was cooked with pork belly that reminded me of a comforting braised dish. The grilled river prawns and a crispy fried fish were also incredibly flavorful and left me wanting more. For such an incredible dining experience, the price felt very reasonable at around 1300 THB per person. If you’re looking for a true taste of Thai home cooking in a setting that feels like a local’s dining room, this place is a must-visit. Just be sure to book well in advance!
