Cops Seize Cocaine-Filled Banana Shipments to Three Washington Safeways | Eater Seattle

"One of the Safeway stores in Bellingham was among locations where authorities confiscated more than $1 million worth of cocaine hidden in banana shipments that had been shipped by a third-party distribution center serving 144 stores." - Gabe Guarente

The food prices are too expensive. You might as well go to a convenience store. Everything is $5 and $6 now there even the cheap stuff. Unaffordable

I live in this neighborhood and shop here regularly. Over time I've gathered a long list of strengths and weaknesses for this store. They have really great sales on a lot of items I buy, and their signature brand or generic, isn't that bad for most items. I also earn a lot of points using their app and it equals money off purchases and points towards gas, all of that ads up and matters to anyone who hates to throw money away. The cons are unfortunately like, pretty big cons, however. Like, their bakery items are ALWAYS stale and expired, even if they were JUST PUT OUT - like donuts. A daily fresh item. How is it already a day or days old when it was just placed on the rack? It's not just donuts tho, it's every single bakery item in this store. They also leave all of their deli items and salads in the display case all night long and serve it the next day. I'm not sure if that's a violation of health codes but I've literally never seen another grocery store do this. So I avoid their deli items and bakery items altogether. Which is really inconvenient, to have to go across town just to shop for bread items and deli stuff. But WinCo luckily has great bakery and deli items, so it works out.

The “person in charge” is an absolute nightmare. She refused to comply with a coupon that was literally matched by scanning the barcode into the app. I don’t believe I’ve seen this level of incompetence in quite some time. Fully tried to gaslight me about it after having to wait 10 minutes for her to run back and forth between the product on the shelf and back to me at least twice. Complete incompetence. I am generally a reasonable person that has respect for everyone working in food or service, and have worked in grocery myself, but this manager should not be anywhere near human beings, much less managing anyone.

I tried placing a grocery delivery today. I received delay alerts one after the other. They were supposed to deliver the food to my home between 3pm & 7pm, but didn't begin shopping until after 6pm. I canceled the order after the third delay, but they still had a poor uber driver drive all of the way out here anyway. After he learned that i had cancelled the order, He was concerned about getting paid for his time since I could not/would not accept delivery. Safeway customer service said that Safeway could not help him. I gave him some money for his time and he took the groceries back to Safeway. When I asked when I would get my money back from Safeway, she said I would have to wait seven business days. Shoddy work all around.

I’ve been coming to this sandwich bar twice a week for three years and have always found the staff friendly and professional. Last week, I saw a regular customer speak rudely to a young employee over being charged for an extra egg patty—a standard policy that everyone is told when they ask for one. If someone disagrees with pricing, it’s better to choose another place to eat rather than to keep coming back to harrass the staff.

We are Canadians who travel through Sumas Border to Lynden occasionally to Safeway. This last trip was not what we expected , Prime Rib was on sale, but by the time we got there they were sold out , the way the Male Butcher talked to us and walked off was very unexpected , A lady meat associate was much polite and explained it was sold out , we decided to check Bellingham store which was 22 minutes away , we had called earlier and the Butcher at Bellingham Safeway said he will hold one for us , but upon reaching there , again disappoinment but thankfully I was able to get one that a customer had put back. Bottom line if you give your word you will keep it aside for someone travelling from far , it should be carried out with integrity not sluffed off. Overall the Sale was Awesome, we paid $36 US for a large Prime rib Roast which was our Dinner last night. I have to give a Big Thank you to Jen, who took the time to help us out at the Cash register at the Bellingham location. We also bought Lunch at Safeway which was delicious as always. Once again Jen , thank you for your service 🙏 Happy Holidays

Google
The store was clean and well laid out. Better signage as you come in would be great. We did a full lap top find the deli. They are actually called Cafe and "Something" (Tasty?) And Irresistible... whatever that is. There are more To Go pick up spots (3+) than handicap parking spots (2) that we saw. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Google
Best place for your birthday cake needs, Keri is amazing and does a wonderful job! She made my stranger things birthday cake 2 years ago and just did my wifes 30th birthday cake today. Anytime I need a cake, I will definitely be asking for her to do it 😁

Yelp
My name's Riley and this is my first ever time writing a review. And I would like to clarify that I am not giving the safeway business a 1 star. for they are a 5 star business. but I am giving a 1 star to the sales of the cherry vanilla flavor of olipop soda that they carry. I do not want to sound mean, as I love olipop. but with all due respect, my mom and I tried the cherry vanilla flavor and it tastes like cough syrup. bitter and tart. and altogether an unenjoyable experience. But I am a 2nd chance type of girl, so I hope they change the recipe of this flavor, so it will actually taste like cherry vanilla.

Kj J.

Yelp
Do not buy liquor here. Not only will it be a waste of your time, but you'll be treated like a complete idiot by the most rude of staff. The older woman who helped me today nearly made me want to suplex her in the middle of the self check out area.

Tracy S.

Yelp
Their hours on Christmas says open until 5. We arrived at 4:30pm and were not allowed in along with many other passin people. we drove 20 mins to get there and called before we left. The tall male employee blocking the door said, "that's your problem. take it up with Safeway." when I let him know we confirmed the hours on line and by phone before driving the distance.

Yelp
Almost 9.00 for a six pack of 12 ounce cokes. Closer to 5.00 in North Carolina and New Jersey. They have a 2 for one special but you HAVE to have their ap to get it even if you have their rewards card. Ice store though, plenty of room and new and clean. If you don't care about your money shop here.

Sheila G.

Yelp
Though the delivery was fast and accurate I have to say the delivery fried chicken was a big disappointmen. If this was cheap chicken Monday, maybe the save Fridays chicken for it. it was kind of of gross and more bone than anything else. Anyway ordering from them is such a chore I think I will save it for snowstorms. I'm sure the other things I order will be gresh and tasty though.

Yelp
(I'd like to ideally give the store 3.5 stars but can't give half stars unfortunately). I've always been a huge Safeway fan. When I lived in Redmond, WA (for 25 years), Safeway was my go-to grocery store. I loved their selection, their prices, their store lay-outs, their pharmacy, their rewards program - pretty much everything. So I had high hopes when I visited this B'ham Safeway yesterday. I came here specifically looking for a few Passover foods that, while not obscure, I couldn't find elsewhere (i.e., Manischewitz cake mix). When I lived near Seattle, every year I got all my Passover stuff at the Redmond and Kirkland Safeways. (Even though these suburbs didn't have huge Jewish populations, they always carried basic foods for the holiday). Walking into this store from the parking lot, I smiled, as the store presented itself as the familiar friend I long knew and loved. Same layout, same cleanliness, same ready-made foods at the deli I knew oh so well. Same seasonal items in the middle of the store, same greeting card aisles.... I had missed it all so much. But as I wandered the aisles, I became less and less content with my old friend Safeway. I couldn't find ANY Passover foods save for a tiny, square free-standing case back near the rear of the store, and it barely had items on it, save for some macaroons and jellied chocolates (never a popular choice!). It was as if this tiny display was an afterthought. They had a few items I considered getting but the regular prices were WAY WAY higher than the "members' price" (and since I've moved to Canada, I no longer am a member of the Safeway rewards program). I looked high and low for someone to ask if they had the cake mixes I was specifically looking for, but there were no employees on the floor (and I walked down every aisle). I finally went to the front cash area and asked a nice lady by the self-service check counter if they had a Passover or kosher area. She walked me to an area in an aisle for their kosher foods and, I kid you not, there was next to nothing there. It's not like the shelves were empty; there just was little space for kosher foods, let alone Passover stuff. She pointed out the boxes of matzo there but even she noted that the boxes said "Not Kosher for Passover" on them. (She was super nice and apologized. I thanked her and said it wasn't her fault!). Anyhow, I felt disappointed by this store. Their non-member prices were high, they didn't really cater to their Jewish customers (surely they have some!), they didn't have folks on the floor to help clients.... it was a far cry from the Safeways I knew and loved in the Seattle area. I was pleased to see that their pharmacy area was well stocked and, outside, they had a decent gas station (with awesome prices, too - compared to Vancouver, anyhow!). And the store was impeccably clean, and they had a nice deli and bakery section. And the lady who tried to help me was very pleasant. So I guess if you are a rewards member here and you don't care about "ethnic" foods, you'd be quite happy here. Me, not so much.

Yelp
This safeway is engaging in very illegal and secretive pricing tactics. If you order delivery, the manager doesnt like people getting stuff on sale, so he'll replace it with a more expensive item, usually a substitute for bulk pack of meat, and it'll be 2lbs of meat turns to .5 lbs and another .5 of vegetables that i'm allergic to. the Manager knows what he is doing, and Corporate Safeway has been told, but they're IN ON IT! They haven't returned any of my calls despite a ton of documentation about how this Safeway is committing fraud.

Yelp
After idling for 2 hours at the border, we really needed a fill up. According to Gasbuddy, the gas station here was the cheapest in the area. Located 25 miles from the border, right along the 5 freeway. Part of the Safeway location but a little bit away from the actual grocery store. Small station, only a few pumps. No wait so I was in and out fast and back on the freeway heading back to Seattle.

Yelp
It's Safeway, so there isn't much to say. This is a fairly well run store with friendly, caring clerks. This store features a large footprint with plenty of quality inventory. Prices are competitive, and Safeway is a fairly aggressive merchandiser, so their ads, promotions and digital specials reward loyalty and good planning. Although I prefer to shop at my much smaller neighborhood Hagens, I appreciate the quality, variety and great prices Safeway can provide.

Yelp
Stopped in for my favorite sushi. And had a great opportunity to get my favorite done with creme cheese !!

Yelp
Two things have particularly pleased me about this Safeway. I think they've been doing a responsible job of helping people stay safe from COVID. And to my delight, I have been very pleased with their selection of ethnic food items. I moved here from larger metropolises, and this is the best "regular" grocery store I've found here that provides for a broader palate.

Yelp
Welcome to Bellingham's newest (and, arguably, most gorgeous) supermarket. We Hamsters waited a longggg time for a Safeway, and it was definitely worth the wait. The store itself is gorgeous, designed more like a boutique grocery than the brightly-lit Safeway me and my mom shopped in when I was a kid. There are several different departments, each with a friendly employee to guide and help if you have any questions. Most impressive is that they are (I believe) the first grocery in Bellingham to offer a growler bar! What I don't like about Safeway is that their prices are just ridiculous. It's a good place to go to shop the specials and use your coupons (if you have the energy for coupon clipping - sadly I do not), but I would never go there to do my regular shopping, especially with super-affordable Winco just another couple of miles down the road.

Yelp
They recently installed a bunch of new self-checkout stands which make it a breeze to get in and out. Staff are very friendly & helpful. Social distancing practices in place and clean carts were available for use. A good go-to spot for snacks and last minute items.
google avatar

Blan K.

Yelp
The self-checkouts are so failure-prone that I can't stand going here anymore. Everywhere else is fine: Winco, Walmart, etc. I suspect this Safeway's self-checkouts are misconfigured or something because shouldn't the hardware and software be fairly standardized at this point? Why would this store's systems all be lemons, and apparently unfixable?
google avatar

Don K.

Yelp
The store is really good majority of the time. The deli area is okay. But the one thing that really is upsetting is that at 5 in the evening the busiest time for a deli to be in service they're out of food and they don't anticipate having any more food at various choices. This hasn't just been a one-off is becoming a common occurrence I wish they'd get their act together

Abigail M.

Yelp
Went to Safeway to get clams for my birthday dinner and all of the clams were dead. You could smell them on the other side of the counter, really disturbing.

Yelp
One of the nicest Safeways, lots of space and lobby too, in fact two sets of doors. Starbucks on left. Awesome ice cream selection. Baby food center aisles also more than decent.

Yelp
Honestly I've been coming here since it opened I never came when it was cost cutter...i have gotten to know the staff well and they are always so kind and helpful whether I'm in produce, seafood, wine, deli or checkout they are always willing to help..ive been a few times when people were stealing and the whole staff come together they deal a lot with theft at this location it's unfortunate..the store is clean deli is great I only wished they had been and cheese burritos instead of only beef and cheese..i get the sushi on the regular it's really good and he will make anything you want...checker Gayla is our favorite she feels like family she treats my kids so kind they love her

Krystal T.

Yelp
Average grocery store. Sometimes mediocre customer service, sometimes great. I've had great service at deli, produce and bakery, and the gentleman that often works self check out is always super nice. Pick up order shoppers seem oblivious to others trying to shop and often seem plain rude. However, the reason I'm writing this review today is because the larger stall in the women's restroom has been a disaster for at least a week. Peaking in to the taped closed door on multiple occasions (I'm there often) it looked like the toilet had overflowed and not been addressed at all besides (maybe) the floor. Today the door was open after someone else had broken through the tape and there's a wet floor cone on the toilet but other than that it still looks untouched... for a week or more. Makes me wonder about the sanitation practices in a time when they're supposed to be upping their sanitation game. Not to mention those who actually need the larger stall that are unable to use it. I understand if whatever's needed to fix it takes time but whatever was clogging the toilet can still be seen around the rim. At least try to make it look presentable rather than putting more tape on the door and a cone on the toilet.

Yelp
On a recent trip to the local Safeway I was amazed how one of the largest (and probably one of the oldest) markets has adapted to the procedures necessary to help customers shop efficiently and safely in this difficult time. Baskets and carts were lined up and wiped down immediately after customers released them. One way aisles were clearly marked as were the waiting lines--six feet apart. All market personnel wore masks. Cashiers were behind Plexiglas and very helpful--my cashier, rather than waiting for a price check, gave me the benefit of the doubt on an item to keep everything moving quickly. Bagging with plastic (no reusable bags accepted) was done efficiently. A shop manager was constantly available getting around to help both customers and check on safe cashier procedures. Everyone was courteous which was so helpful. Thanks guys for a wonderful experience. You are truly heroes!

Yelp
Week before Christmas. No shopping carts, lines for days and only 3 check stands open. Shame on you Safeway for valuing labor cost savings over a positive customer experience.

Yelp
How can a large grocery store not have ANY rye bread? There wasn't any prepackaged or artisan/bakery rye bread. Asked an employee and he confirmed that there was nowhere else they might have it. So weird!!
google avatar

Yelp
They need to do a quality check on their customer service here. I have gone here so many times and never had a problem. I was at the deli section and one of their employees was super rude. It seemed like she was unhappy with her job. I came there to buy food for my kids and my friends kids that I was sitting for the weekend and I was given attitude and spoken to like I was poor or something. I would've given this location 5 stars for all the other times I have gone here but let this be a reminder that even one bad service could mess it all up for the whole team. I don't play like that.

Scott A.

Yelp
I've been shopping at this store since I moved to Bellingham four years ago, and have spent several thousand dollars here (they have a great wine shop). This morning I went to the store, spent $180, and looked at the receipt when I got home. I was shocked to see the flowers I bought were $21.99, not $11.99. The only sign said '11.99'. I called the store and asked for a credit, and they refused, saying I had to come in. I've gotten store credit over the phone for an occasional bad item from their deli, so why? I don't want to drive back there to correct their failure to post prices correctly. The relatively new store management are total jerks. They refused to take any responsibility for not posting proper pricing, and the manager got offended when I asked if he ever walked the flower aisle. I put the flowers on the 'customer service' desk including the stems I had cut off before putting them in a vase, and demanded my money back. The clerk got huffy with me when I raised my voice (and accused them of cheating me), and I finally got my money back from the assistant manager. No apology. Haggens has infinitely better butcher, deli, and bakery. Much closer to my home. I'll never set foot in that store again.

Yelp
I got some crab and it was so good I went back the next day for more. Also, the employee here, Janet, was amazing. Kind and nice. She cut out the guts out of the crab (it was also not crowded at the time) but overall, just a very pleasant experience. Thank u Janet. :)

Yelp
When the Pfizer Booster first became available in September for people 65 and over, I telephoned this pharmacy and was told to come in the next morning. When I arrived, I was (mis)informed that the Booster was only for people with compromised medical conditions. I did not argue but I was very concerned that the Pharmacist was so misinformed and spoke to me in such a condescending manner. I then went home, made an online appointment with Rite Aid for the following day. I did indeed receive my Booster on 9/25/2021 and needless to say, I will never trust nor patronize this pharmacy ever again.

Scott A.

Yelp
This review is only for the pharmacy. Rest of the store is 5 stars. I'm having a procedure that calls for a colon cleanser (sorry!). My doctor called it in, they called and said they didn't have it in stock, but assured me it would be here yesterday. I have had three automated phone calls telling me it's there. When I get to the store, they tell me that it's not here, and they didn't call me, the automated system did. Treated me like, 'what's your problem?' Stay away (from the pharmacy). Rest of the store is great.

Yelp
I have been going to safeway since it opened in Bellingham and I have been buying their fried chicken in the deli and when it started it was hot and fresh. Now it's hit and miss, they flog off the old chicken that is at least-3 hours old even when you ask for the freshest do to be eaten for lunch. This time it was lukewarm at best and dried out. The pieces were very small. Used to fill a bucket 3/4 of the way but this time the chicken shrunk to 1/3 of a bucket. They must be buy cheap small chickens parts to put out. My wife and I were very disappointed this time and me thinks maybe .... no more safeway fried chicken. Even Fred Meyers give large pieces but my only complaint is that its so overcooked it dried out and tasteless. That's why we switched to safeway. Too bad we don't have a Churches chicken in Bellingham. DIF

Yelp
This store opened on Friday and it is beautiful! This used to be another grocery store and the building had been vacant for just under 2 years. Safeway took their time and did a thorough remodel of this space. The bakery and deli spaces are nicely laid out with lots of tables of goods between the bakery on the right and the deli on the left. There seemed to be lots of well stocked tables of baked goodies and a large selection of olives at the olive bar. Further back there is a large wine area, tucked into the corner, but nicely lit. There is a large selection of wines to choose from. Unfortunately liquor is locked up, different from any other place in town. To buy a bottle, you must summon a clerk for help. Next is dairy, meat and seafood, then, continuing along the outer edge, produce, along the west side of the store. I noticed a large selection of organic produce in separate and centralized cases. The floors are polished concrete that look mostly great. It is patchy though, there are lots of places where utilities were moved from the previous locations, so the concrete has a lot of character. The staff have been well-trained to be friendly, I was greeted pleasantly by nearly every employee I passed. A couple asked if I needed a store map to find things. I wasn't here shopping, just getting a cup of coffee and checking out the new store. I'll come back once things get more settled.

Kyle S.

Yelp
I went to the hot case at the deli for lunch like I often do and it was practically empty. I asked the lady behind the counter if she was going to have some more items ready soon. Her response was that she "doesn't usually keep those items in the case." A total lie! I shop there regularly so I know what items they usually serve. She then said that she could cook them for me but made it clear that it was a huge inconvenience and it would take an exaggerated amount of time. I was so put off by the whole interaction that I just put the rest of my groceries down and left the store.

Yelp
a pretty good store - we really appreciate all of the available online/shopping/delivery options

Yelp
This store has the nicest people working in the pharmacy. My husband and I travel for business and getting out of area RX filled can be a pain. This pharmacy made it easy and were very nice. Love the store, it is beautiful and well stocked.
google avatar

Yelp
More expensive than Fred Meyers for most things but some of the bulk items and produce are a better deal... Oysters that are $1 at Fred Meyer are $1.50 here. Blue Diamond crackers are $1 more... But you cannot speak there pasadena or poblano chilis or bulk pitted dates in price or quality. They have the same deal on gas discount as Fred Meyers. their deli area and bakery area have some better and worse choices than other stores.

Yelp
Excellent wine selection, especially Washington state wines. On Friday afternoon from 3-7 pm, they are offering winery tastings. They also offer growlers in two sizes. Be sure to ask for Meredith, if you need help--she is quite knowledgeable and friendly.

Jaime M.

Yelp
The only reason this was such a frustrating Safeway, was because we really had to use the bathroom when we went in just after 10 pm. Apparently they close the bathrooms that are available to customers from 10pm to 7am. This seems like a ridiculous thing to do as many customers use the bathroom and is the only place open. Very disappointed that they would lock the only bathrooms in the store due to "pick pocketing"...

Yelp
I went in today for the first time. I ordered a birthday cake, which, unknown to me, was on sale. The bakery employee that helped me was knowledgeable and helpful (Abby). I encountered several employees while in the store and found every single one to be helpful. Lately it seems like most stores have lackluster employees who seem put out to have to assist a customer. This Safeway seemed to be the exact opposite - employees had a customer-centric attitude. The store was clean and I liked the variety and pricing I saw. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
It's always open, the employees are friendly and the groceries are fresh. Great place!

Yelp
The Sunset Safeway store is a great place to shop and has just about all that a person could need. Where the problems lay, is in the pharmacy online and call in. The online prescription refill is a joke. Don't even bother taking the time to register an account. I t just doesn't work. Last year when I complained to the in store staff I got the "Not our problem, we are not responsible for that". I could not believe my ears. Here I thought my prescription was being filled , when the truth is they had never received it. Yesterday, May 14 2018, I used the phone number published on the prescription label. 99% of the time no problem. This time I was refilling my prescriptions early as I am taking a trip out of town for 60 days to a remote location where there is no pharmacies. The computer program, after checking my identity, told me it was too early to refill two of my prescriptions, that if I needed the pharmacist to check with my doctor to get an early refill "Press 2" I did. When I wen in today to pick up my refills only one was filled and the other two were not. I asked why. I was told it was too early, I said "I told the computer for you to contact the doctor to ok an early refill". The women looked at me and said that is not our problem. But I asked the computer to let you know that that needed to be done. "We are not responsible for that" was her reply. So I was led to believe that all was well, and it wasn't. Instead of hearing "we can check into this problem" they just blew it off and asked "would you like us to call the insurance company?" WELL I thought I gave that answer to the computer program so you knew to do it!! End of the story, if it is not a straight forward refill, talk to a human on the phone. Better yet go in and talk face to them face to face. To sum up I wasted my time and my breath talking to a brick wall. Ken Benthien

Yelp
Best and most reasonably priced salad bar in Bellingham. I routinely get a generous salad for under $6.00. Nice seating area surrounded by a very taste tempting bakery.

Jennifer M.

Yelp
I was coming home from work and was in the mood for a fresh baked anything. I went into Safeway and saw their in store fresh made pecan tart. I have such wonderful memories of pecan pie as a child. I was looking forward to a wonderful treat. On my way home I took a bite it was awful. Dry tasteless crust. I thought I just spent $4.00. It can't be this bad. I came home and warmed it up thinking, things always taste better warm.... as the butter melts and the sugar comes out. But, it was still awful. I called the store to encourage them to taste what they're selling. I tried the bakery. No one answered. I tried the general information. No one answered. I wasn't planning on spending this much time on a pecan tart. I threw the rest away. I don't want to waste calories on something that has no pleasurable qualities. DON'T BUY FROM SAFEWAY'S BAKERY.

Yelp
Terrible service. Store manager Mike Eagle refused to sell us a bottle of wine because my boyfriend had to run to the car to get his ID, but said he'd still sell us the other $100 worth of groceries we had for the weekend. Claimed it was store policy and if we didn't like it we could leave. Lesson learned-- we went to Rite Aid.

Yelp
This is the worst Safeway I've ever encountered and the worst shopping experience I've ever encountered. I waited literally 20 minutes in check out because "Vicky" kept messing up at the register. When I went back to pick up my sandwiches which I had them work on when I first got there the Asian woman who couldn't communicate ignored me proceeding to make sandwiches for an entire family. I butted in saying "excuse me can I just pay for my sandwiches. She said theyre In the hot box to keep them warm. Then kept making the other people's sandwiches I was so frustrated I just left. I'm never coming back. Rude, slow and incompetent!

Yelp
Was not willing to help me at customer service. They didn't care that I had a receipt or that item was just bought the day before.

Yelp
The manager Mr. Eagle is so rude and disrespectful! Careless or Carl is the wine and bev guy! He knows nothing! 14 hands for him but less I will never spend my money there...

Yelp
New favorite Safeway! All of the staff I have spoken with are great and helpful. Their ready-made food is great. Don't forget your own bag!!

Yelp
Bellingham needed a safe way very bad and this is a great location for this new store. This store has a good selection at reasonable prices . I am really pleased all around that Bellingham has a saddest and I can enjoy shopping there

Yelp
I absolutely love Ashley at the Sunset Starbucks. She is, hard working and obviously loves her job. I love the fact that she gets to know her customers and is always friendly. Thank you for putting a smile on my face!

Yelp
This is a really nice store and the employees I have interacted with have always been really nice as well. I would certainly do my shopping here if I were wealthy. However, since I do have to watch my spending it makes no sense to get groceries here. A nicer environment does not make up for prices that will routinely be $1 more than the same thing at Fred Meyer and $2 to $3 more than at Wal-Mart. I'll have to wait to shop here until after I win the lottery.

Yelp
This is a beautiful store. We've shopped here several times although the Safeway in Lynden is closer. Service and products vary from visit to visit. One weekend, we bought the most gloriously beautiful organic carrots. The next weekend, they looked puny and anemic by comparison. At the deli counter, I either get several people eager to help or there are 3 people working behind the counter studiously ignoring me and I'm the only customer. In the bakery, I asked about ciabatta rolls and was told they haven't brought them out yet from behind the counter. Why couldn't they just go get me the 2-3 I wanted rather than telling me I could buy a package of them? I saw the packages - had I wanted a package, I would have bought one. As much as we don't care for Haggen, at least their bakery staff will get whatever we want from behind their counters. Stores carry the same items for the most part, so overall, it's the little things that seem to add up. Customer service should be paramount.
