Berkeley Is First in the U.S. to Ban Candy, Chips, and Soda From Grocery Store Checkout Lanes | Eater SF

"As a large retailer affected by Berkeley's new healthy-checkout ordinance, Safeway will only be allowed to display healthy snacks within two feet of the register, meaning typical impulse items like chips, candy, and soda must be moved elsewhere; the rule applies to stores 2,500+ sq ft, takes effect March 1, 2021, and will be enforced by health inspectors beginning January 1, 2022." - Eve Batey

So it would be 1 star, but for the sushi chef. He deserves more respect. He makes good sushi. How many people know this? 5 stars for him. This place is pretty trashy. They had to remove all outdoor seating because of all the crazies. They also allow people to stand outside the doors and solicit customers. all this would be excusable as typical to locale, but there are NEVER any handbaskets, even when the store is not busy. Considering how expensive Safeway is here, buy more hand baskets!! Employees told me that it is because thieves take their stolen food out along with the basket. So basically, Safeway can't supply its customers handbaskets because they let their customers steal. Which explains the people who come from afar to this store. It's difficult to find employees on the store to ask questions. Everything that is inedible is locked up. More nails in the coffin for "brick & mortar", as Amazon waits silently on the sidelines. There is only ever ONE register open. Safeway does not want to hire people. I know that the constant theft is a societal and policy issue. California lawmakers decided to legalize stealing, which probably expains the higher prices that we pay. And all the good CA citizens can pat themeselves on the back for destroying trust and societal norms. Anyway, love the African-American man who monitors the self-checkout. He does provide friendly and good customer service. The employees are probably doing their best under circumstances.

This was my go to Safeway for many years, until I got tired of the employees’ attitudes. Things like not letting customers in 10 or 15 minutes before the store officially closes. That’s not acceptable if you race there to pick up a couple of things before they close and some idiot tells you that you can’t go in because it’s too late. I rarely go here anymore. But as Safeway goes, this is a mediocre store, it’s not as nice as the one on college, but it’s on par but with worse customer service than the one on Solano.

They denied me services and declined my ID. I’ve never had any issues with my ID. The manager told the cashier that she’d get in trouble if she accepted my ID. Really unacceptable the manager doesn’t know the types of IDs accepted in the US. It’s a valid form of ID according to the government website and I’ve never had any issues with this. I don’t appreciate the manager insinuating my ID was fake and saying “of course you’d say it’s real”. It IS real and I showed him the government website with that form of ID. He still kept saying it was fake. Really unacceptable.

This is by far the worst grocery store I have ever been to in my 30 plus years of life with regard to customer service and check out experience. On multiple occasions I have had to wait over 5 minutes in the self checkout for someone to solve my problem. It is unclear who is responsible for the zone and there seems to be a general disinterest from the staff in proactively helping customers. At the same time there is often only one or two other checkout lanes open. A separate but equally frustrating issue is hand baskets. Half the time I've entered the store this year there have been no hand baskets available, only carts. Baskets are not being used in the store they simply do not exist. Why? Where are they? I've asked staff and no one has an explanation. I understand operations are never perfect but the experience at this store is so bad it is actively pushing me to walk to andronico's or drive to Berkeley bowl.

Google
There’s no need to offend customers with unnecessary remarks. When I visit late in the evening or early in the morning and ask for help finding a product, the staff often just point vaguely and give me a look that feels very unwelcoming. When I bring my own reusable bag for environmental reasons, they’ve even criticized it, saying it’s too flimsy. I want the store manager to be aware that these unnecessary comments and behaviors are upsetting customers. I’m not asking for overly friendly service—just basic manners. Yet, even after complaints, the staff continue to act the same way. Rude employees are a major reason people avoid this place.

Google
I went to Safeway and needed to use the restroom. They don’t give out the PIN code — instead, they said someone would come and open the door for me. Nobody ever showed up. If you need to use the restroom, don’t bother going to this Safeway.

Yelp
Update 11/9: I list wanted to post what I posted because I really enjoyed watching this woman create sushi rolls..lol. I was very amazed. It is the small things that matter!

Yelp
I like this Safeway. I was there the other day to buy a bouquet of flowers for a dance recital, and Hailey, who worked at the flower counter was very helpful. She made a good recommendation on which flowers to choose and made me the most beautifully wrapped bouquet of flowers --the recipient was very happy with them and so was I. Thank you Hailey! Keep up the great work. I appreciate the customer service.

Yelp
Waited at the self checkout for 10 minutes and the only person that had a key (daryl) went to wait to help somebody in the meat department and took 10 minutes to return. There's nine aisles and only one was manned and of the eighth self service checkouts only four were open at peak after work hours between 5 and 7 PM. There was eight employees by the cash registers and none of them had a key to fix the self check out Machine. I was working at trying to pay. This place is usually heavily disorganized, and although it seemed like there was sufficient staffing, the folks over there were not helpful, not friendly, except for the security guard who was encouraging people to take their place in line.

Yelp
No hand baskets. One cashier working at 5:30pm on 10/228/25. Lines at least 6-10 people deep. What is going on?

Yelp
I came to this Safeway to find Fruit Cake Mix which I was unable to find. I check out this Safeway and it was not a big mistaken. This location hidden in the best part of Shattuck is amazing. The parking lot is big with a parking garage below with access to the store with the elevator and stairs. Inside of Safeway is clean with a Starbucks. The store manage to keep it clean and fully stocked. I was able to find what I needed at Safeway which was sushi. When I went to pay for my sushi I was greeted with a smile from the cashier. I inform the cashier that their store was clean and much bigger than Solano location which he appreciated. I wish their self check out was able to use but since it was 8:15-8:30am I guess it is open after 9am. Keep up the good work on keeping everything stocked up Safeway.

Yelp
I was in this store for literally 15 min and bought a couple items. When I came out I had a parking ticket for $65! Their word against mine that I was there over 2 hours. Guess they have to meet their ticket quota! AVOID this place!!

Joy B.

Yelp
The staff are mostly helpful. Pretty good selection in the produce department, usually fresh and well organized. The bathrooms are in poor condition, try not to stop there unless it's a dire emergency. Management says they told their higher ups, but it doesn't seem to matter because they can' keep making $

Yelp
I don't know where they find there security this one they have now asked my daughter for her phone number she declined he then followed her out to her car made her pull out her receipt then pull out everything out he car to make sure she scanned everything. Unacceptable this is crazy she came home in tears. I will file a formal complaint. She clearly scanned everything he knew because he watched really scary

Yelp
I shop at this Safeway three times a week and am quite familiar with the staff since I live nearby. I frequently use self-checkout because I usually purchase only a few items. On this particular visit, I was buying beverages for a sporting event and had clipped a water deal in the app. However, when I entered my number at checkout, the discount didn't apply. Patrick, one of the employees, told me to scan the app to ensure the deal was honored. I followed his recommendation, but the discount still didn't go through. I then walked over to his register to explain the issue, and instead of handling it professionally, he became verbally dramatic. He ended up giving me a dollar back from the register, but the interaction felt unnecessarily difficult and was not the difference of the water purchase. Unfortunately, this isn't the first time I've had a negative experience with Patrick he has consistently been rude in my past encounters

Sergiio B.

Yelp

William M.

Yelp
Selection is not great. Additionally, very strict about parking enforcement. Even though I did buy something at Safeway, running across the street to see if I could find something at another store that Safeway didn't have in stock resulted in them ticketing me for leaving the store and then coming back without leaving the parking lot. Strongly recommend this being the last place you go if you might go to multiple shops.

Yelp
Not a bad Safeway overall, but I have just had too many bad experiences here, mainly due to the old guy (has an accent, usually wears a cap) that mans their self-check out sometimes. Whenever I get one of their items with the purple "25% and 50% off" tags, which requires the person on self-check out to review and approve it. Most of the other self-check out clerks do it smoothly and look at the item, read the screen and approve it. The old guy with the accent instead pretty much always rescans both the item and the 50% off tag, which results in a double charge, so I actually end up paying full price for an item that was supposed to be half off. Sometimes the dude rescans (which re-adds) the half-off item multiple times, which resulted in me paying for 1 item (that was supposed to be half off) like 3 times. I time my shopping with the bus and go through self-check out to get out faster with less wait-time for the bus, so I often didn't bother getting it corrected (it's only a couple bucks after all). But the last time I had like 10 items in the bagging area but the screen showed 14 and I pointed that out to him. He counted my items slowly and counted the screen, then said "I don't know why it's showing that." I replied, "Dude. You rescanned this 1 item multiple times. Take those off man. It's the same thing charged over and over again." Then he got closer to the screen to read it and he begrudgingly took off the overcharges. And I wound up missing my bus, but at least I didn't pay multiple times for just one item (that was supposed to be discounted). Like wtf dude, do you think scanning 1 item a bunch of times won't add it on the machine? Not sure if the dude just has eyesight issues or what, but he's ripping people off. Also gotta add, it's not even limited to when I have a discount tag issue. Sometimes the self-check out isn't even lighting up and people don't even need help, but he will get real close to read the screens like he's looking for something then walk away. Didn't look at the items in the bagging area, doesn't say anything to people. Not sure what that's about, but respect people's space man and maybe have an actual reason to look at people's stuff. Honestly, if I see him sitting at self-check out I just go to the regular cashier line and wait. If the cashier lines are too long, I don't even bother, get out and spend my money at TJ's or Berkeley Bowl. Most of the clerks are alright, but I'm not about to keep getting ripped off by some guy that simply can't read a screen well. Another issue is all the locked up stuff behind plexiglass here. It can take anywhere from 5-30 minutes of waiting to get a locked item (usually like 20 minutes). Really inconvenient just to get shampoo/bath products and not worth it, so usually after waiting 10 minutes, I don't bother and leave for other grocery stores.

Yelp
This place gave me the BEST sushi ever they gave me a 7.99 dollar sushi that was on sale for 5 dollars however with my amazing bargaining skills I got the sushi for for 1.99 and guess who didn't believe me guess who didn't believe me the people i thought could trust that were around me around me but BAM BADABOOM BOP I DID IT. I will be back that was americas smartest decision the energy of the space was AMAZING AND IMACULATE however one piece of sushi was off center so work on that but loved the unicorn balloons. I'll always go to this one.

Yelp
You would think with eggs costing $7-13 they could at LEAST price them or stock them accordingly. This is not the case. Be better Berkeley.

Yelp
This was never a haunt for me because I no longer live in the area. Three of the most miserable years of my life. So much for the joys of Berkeley Hills living! Anyhow, I came by here to get some stuff for the holiday, Cheeseboard had a huge line and after surgery, I wasn't going to wait. I'm an Andronicos girl, but this place was closer to the Cheeseboard and I came here. It wasn't as busy as I expected. It was nice and Christmassy. I found what I wanted right away. It's a clean store and I was confident that if I'd gone into the bathroom, that it would be clean, unlike the bathroom in El Cerrito. The only issue is that I was looking for some Mexican corn chips and the El Cerrito Store has them. For some reason, they don't have them here. Probably, not a lot of Mexican people. But as a non-Mexican woman, who likes some of their chips (which says a lot because I don't eat chips from other countries - England/France ...no thanks). But they lose a star for having plenty of food for fancy folks but nothing really for those of us with less fancy tastes in chips. I had a former friend from high school who used to work there and I remember running into her once. I was hoping that I'd run into her. No such luck. Last time I saw her was over 20 years ago and when I've come in, I've stopped asking for her. I'm not in the area much, but if I need to get something and don't want to traverse the aisles of Andronicos, I will definitely stop in for something.

Yelp
Great store. I like that it has natural foods and then the regular conventional stuff. The organic line from Safeway is great . This is a nice, roomy store with a fast self-service check out.

Leia A.

Yelp
They are supposed to close at midnight. I arrived 6 minutes before midnight to pick up one quick item and they already locked the door. They saw me, but yet, did not open.

s v.

Yelp
Watch out for employee Patrick @ self-checkout, he is a filthy fu*%ing pig! I just checked out w/ 7 items and the machine was acting up. The fist time Patrick came over clear the error he cussed at me; the second time he came over he burped onto the screen after clearing the error - leaving me to finish my transaction with his dirty inside juice covering the areas of the screen I needed to press. So nasty,

Yudith V.

Yelp
I spent $95.00 the cashier starts giving himself 10s on the keypad, I told him that he was not supposed to do that. They did not even bother to say thank you at the end of the transaction. And I said if they had good customer service I wouldn't mind them giving themselves 10s on the survey.

Yelp
They carry my favorite Chicago Pizza. Home Run Inn. Although normally a big store they generally are a great one stop store! Try them.

Rachael S.

Yelp
I have pretty much had it with this place. There are some nice and competent people who work here and sometimes the sale prices are decent. But the combination of inflated prices (sodas, Gatorade, and pita chips are among the worst), some rude employees, and understocking has led me to buy as much as I can elsewhere (TJ's, Amazon, and Walmart, mostly). My most recent bad experience was with Dave at the meat counter, who was flippant, rude, and insulting when by early Saturday afternoon they had already run out of the chicken breast that was on sale and I politely explained to him the legal requirements about having adequate supply of advertised sale items. I filed a complaint via online chat, and was falsely promised something would be done and somebody would get back to me (nothing was and nobody did). Goodbye Safeway!

Earl C.

Yelp
A wide variety of food and good service. It's my neighborhood grocery store. I don't know what to say about the ambience.

Yelp
I've been going to the Shattuck Safeway's on and off for over two decades. My other local shopping choices that I frequent are Sprouts and Trader Joe's. Occasionally Whole Foods for their organic roast chicken, bakery items, hot foods & soups, to go, and an occasional specialty item. Generally, speaking, Safeway is a great place for a lot of items at better prices equivalent in quality to even Whole Foods. But you have to shop for a while to figure it out. For the last decade, it has increased its offerings of organic vegetables, frozen items, as well as can and bottle food products. If I can buy organic product at Safeway's, although Whole Foods may have it, I'll buy it at Safeway's. Safeway's also offers a lot of two-for-one deals & discounts if you are a member . They even started to offer a lot of even better deals, if you scan specific coupons posted on the shelf. For some reason, although I'm pretty good at digital technology, I am not able to always do that successfully and it's frustrating. My real complaint is if I'm already a member and you have my information, my telephone number, to confirm at check out, why are you putting me through the trouble of separately scanning coupons digitally an item at a time? And often with such difficulty that I give up? And then I feel cheated because I didn't get a better deal than membership!?! It's like you're competing with your own decades-long established membership discount program and defeating it. Or putting us through two steps towards the same end. Otherwise, I would've given you a five star. Hopefully you'll resolve this.

Jason W.

Yelp
Their no cashiers working. It's all self checkout. So if you want to buy beer you have to buy your groceries in one line then buy your beer in another line. Huge waste of time. Safeway making harder not to just buy everything on Amazon
google avatar

Steve C.

Yelp
This is a subpar grocery store. The fruit and veg is always on the verge of going bad. The milk selection is super limited. The bakery items are basically non-existent. All that would be excusable for a city-center grocery store struggling to get by, but this place takes it to another level by just not caring. The place is always filthy with trash strewn all over. The parking lot is dangerous with holes and pits all over. The staff is also terrible. They are totally unhelpful and can't really pay attention to anything going on.

Arla S.

Yelp
The deli is great for fried chicken and the individual wings that can be teriyaki, bbq, salt&vinegar or spicy. They're usually fresh and hot, unlike other locations, and the ladies who work there are great, very helpful and friendly.

Shane C.

Yelp
Manager is very rude. After coming in to customer service every other day because no one answers their phone at this location, finally came in and was told someone will come out to help me. She comes out and asks what I needed until an elderly person cuts in front of me and demands help but can barely speak. I patiently just waited for him to get what he needs. Then the manager looks at me like I'm wasting her time, says no for my request and tells me I'm giving her an attitude. No I don't have an attitude. You're literally acting hostile and I'm uncomfortable. This whole interaction could have been avoided if someone would just answer the phone.
google avatar

Tanis L.

Yelp
I came to this Safeway for the approximately four years I lived in Berkeley and Albany. I found all store sections to be well stocked and have a variety of offerings. Even managed to find fresh okra here one time for a recipe I was making. Three of the stand out sections I regularly visited here were the bakery, the frozen novelties, and the pharmacy. Doughnuts became a breakfast staple especially in my later years living here as I headed to work. The pharmacy in my experience was well run and pharmacists were clear with instructions when needed and friendly and kind in their interactions. They were helpful when I would be out of town when my prescription needed to be filled making sure I had worked everything out with my psychiatrist so there were no problems when I went to get my prescriptions filled. In the main store there are both checkers/cashiers and self check-out options. Lines could get quite long at times, but still moved at a decent pace.
google avatar

Ben S.

Yelp
This is a terribly unfriendly store. They allow crazy long lines, have terrible produce; the store is an unhappy mess.
google avatar

Mila M.

Yelp
I don't know why the ladies that work at the deli are so unhappy and unfriendly. And they are extremely slow. I waited in line behind two people for 35 min. Everytime I go there if there's a few people in line it seems to take a very long time . You would think management would notice as well. But I think what gets me the most is how unfriendly they are. I don't need them to be happy to see me. But I don't want to feel uncomfortable ordering from them like I'm putting them out. I have to go to them. It's set up that way. I have no choice. If you don't like people you shouldn't work with customers. Kindness goes a long way.

Jeff R.

Yelp
There's an older Asian woman that works in the deli department of the Safeway on Shattuck in Berkeley. And she barely knows any English at all. And I don't think you need to know perfect English for such a job but you should know at least some basic words. For example if I ask her for 5 of a certain item she won't know what the word five means. So it's very frustrating trying to get her to understand what you want. And she gets upset at you for the fact that she hasn't bothered to spend the 15 minutes it might take her to learn a few basic words in English (such as the numbers 1-10). I've seen many customers get frustrated with her, give up, and just walk away without getting whatever they wanted. I myself would buy several things there almost every day but I won't go there anymore. It's too stressful trying to deal with that woman. Maybe Safeway makes enough money so they don't care that this woman is probably costing them a few hundred a week but they should care that one of their employees is offending their customers.
google avatar

Stephanie Y.

Yelp
I kind of hated on Safeway for a very long time, but then I downloaded their app and now I kind of love Safeway. There, I said it. Download the app. So many great deals and coupons for their rewards members. Without it, I wouldn't be giving them the bright lights of 4 stars. This Safeway has a nice produce and meat section and is nicely laid out. The guy checking me out was fine, there was a security guard in the front and everyone was masked up, as to be expected. Mainstream brands, anything more independent and bougie is going to require Berkeley Bowl or Whole Foods, but definitely a solid shopping trip to load up on essentials. Overall, armed with app and coupons, you can get some great deals here.
google avatar

Al L.

Yelp
If you're a Safeway shopper, you're probably aware of its $5 Friday specials. After stopping my local store, the there was a waiting line at the deli for the fried chicken special, so I left not wanting to wait. I was in Berkeley for another shopping stop and decided to check out this Safeway store in North Berkeley. I was able to find a space on the street level lot, though they have an underground lot. The store's layout was spacious and well laid out. The store was not crowded too. First, there was only person waiting for deli service, so I was able to get my fried chicken. Next, I headed over to the meat dept and picked up some packages of the short rib on special too. They have self-check registers here to speed the check-out process. Overall, I was pleased with my shopping experience at this store.
google avatar

David N.

Yelp
Oh man! I never reviewed this Safeway? I worked here while in college! Store 695. Stopped here on my way home for a few things and the Friday $5 8 - pcs fried chicken. I like the underground parking lot that's almost empty most of the time. Convenient during the rain. The store is like a "super" Safeway. Wide aisles and fairly clean for a busy location. A very pleasant deli person picked me good sized chicken and got me checked out fast!

Amelia V.

Yelp
Went in at 6 o'clock on a Sunday evening. There were hardly any customers in the store. However, there was not a single shopping cart available. Nor were there any hand baskets near the west door. I asked to see the manager and I was told I would have to wait. as I left - to go shop someplace else - I found that the handbasket were piled by the store. Last time I was there, the store was exit only. In short, there was absolutely nothing for me to put my groceries in. Where were there weren't many people there?and then when I went to the baby food aisle - for my sick cat Dash all they had was ham. My cats never gonna eat ham. This place is a mess. I will never be back.
google avatar

Posu Y.

Yelp
Just your average Safeway. Good -- they have 8 self-checkout kiosks Bad -- only half of them are ever working They recently upgraded the self-checkout kiosks which are a bit nicer than the previous ones. The UI is nicer and a bit quicker overall, and the area for placing items is larger. COVID-19 Stuff ======== -- You can't bring your own reusable grocery bags anymore. -- There are now ONE WAY lane markers on the floors of each aisle. Nobody follows them ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -- Cheese is apparently all the rage now and they run out very quickly

Kotaro S.

Yelp
Not the best quality and all the food is kind of over priced. Only good thing is it's open till late

Thomas C.

Yelp
I know that food INFLATION is going up everywhere, but this Safeway in Berkeley is jacking up the price of food that is ready to be thrown out aka near "expiration date" aka "50% off." So the NEW "sale price" is now what the regular price was a few weeks ago and it's going to be moldy twice as fast. FJB! And FU Democrat voters for voting for this Build Back Better Bull & Green New Deal Bull! Y'all screwed up your cities, state, and now the whole country. Slow clap. Food was not this expensive before Biden screwed everything up!
google avatar

D G.

Yelp
Habitually understaffed, they try to force you to the self-checkout machines, but they don't even have enough of those. On top of that, their checkout machines are slow and buggy so you're constantly waiting for their overworked attendant. Every time I end up coming here for something the smaller Safeway's don't have, I leave swearing I'll never come back.
google avatar

WitchesKnowBest S.

Yelp
Went in there Jan. 16, 2023 to get milk & some chicken. Dairy case smelled like rotting corpses and poultry & meat area worse. How did it get so bad? Not appetizing.

Alice K.

Yelp
I'm so sick of these stores trying to force customers to use self checkout! I WON'T do it. You're trying to eliminate jobs. Shame on you! Trader Joe's doesn't have self checkout. Maybe I'll start doing all my grocery shopping there!
google avatar

Irene L.

Yelp
This is not a great Safeway location due to the impatient staff. I've been here a few times and experienced less than amazing customer service, however, I keep coming back because of $5 Fridays! A bucket of 8-piece fried chicken is only $5 along with selected sushi rolls and sometimes the super big sub sandwiches. These deals are hard to pass up especially since this amount of fried chicken from Popeyes or KFC can be around $10+. Safeway here is fine for this reason but SoCal Vons is so much better!!
google avatar

Hana P.

Yelp
The old chinese lady who work on the food service that make sandwiches was so rude and unprofessional while she did my order for 2 sandwiches. It's take horrible and salty. I would never comeback here again for lunch takeout. I would not recommend anyone who come here for lunch take out especially sandwiches. There would be any problem when I go with different Safeway to avoid rude toward this Safeway.

Noah F.

Yelp
Bathroom door lock does not work... they could've at least put a sign on the door. Had two people walk in on me in the bathroom. Ridiculous

Joshua M.

Yelp
I travel for work and one of my favorite places to get a sandwich from is Safeway. I always get the same sandwich every time I go. Davida at the sandwich counter has made by far the best damn sandwich I have ever had from any Safeway!

Yelp
I would sell my soul to avoid shopping here. The employees will give you the most hateful, mind numbing, murderous looks when they see you. I get it, most people hate their jobs... But this... is a whole new level. I just can't describe how much the employees hate the shoppers here. Here is my most recent example: Got in checkout hoping to take out cash. The customer in front of me was trying to ask the cashier something... instant death glare. The little old lady customer was very uncomfortable. Can you imagine handing your card to someone that hates you, won't look or speak to you, moving in that slow "I hate everything" move...? Then it was our turn... I tried to be super nice, maybe she had something bad happen. Requested the cash. SHE STARTS TO PULL OUT CHANGE FOR $100 IN $5 BILLS! WHAAAAAAT!!!! I asked for bigger bills. Omg big mistake. I thought she would jump across the counter and strangle us. She bashed the money back into the register and told us to go to customer service, which was empty. We waiting there in shock for a bit, unable to leave without cashing out the receipt. After 5 mins an employee comes out of the back room and she looks more cheerful. I thought about complaining to her or asking for a manager, but I didn't want to be ~that~ person. Then I realized it would have been useless... We asked for change in bigger bills, she told us she didn't have change. She told us we would have to wait in different lines until we found a cashier with bigger bills. Are you freaking kidding me...!? Someone please sage this place of the demons that possess the employees! The thought of shopping here makes me so anxious!

Yelp
Welcome to the worst grocery store in Berkeley! Possibly the entire East Bay! Okay, the selection and produce are de rigueur Safeway. So there's no problem with that. Standard hoi polloi "Why didn't I go to Berkeley Bowl?" type stuff. It's the employees, and many of the customers, that make this place the awful pit of consumer despair that it is. On rare occasions you might find someone who will actually acquiesce to helping you, but their employees are the epitome of DGAF workers. Ask for help, or even just ask them to check out the items you've chosen to buy, and they act as if you just interrupted them from something important. Oftentimes employees will be engaged in conversation or horseplay with, not just other coworkers, but sometimes their friends who just happened to wander in. I've actually got annoyed looks from them when I've asked them to tell me how much I need to pay, forcing them to turn away from their conversation partner. Standing at a counter waiting for service? Annoyed looks from employees who ignore you as long as possible until they reluctantly decided to help you. Customer service desk? Constantly deserted. Need to cash in that lotto ticket or wire some money? Bend over backwards, or just bend over, because trying to get someone to help you there is a long and tepid chore of asking clueless and uninterested employees. "Sorry, no customer service right now," is a common phrase. And it's not just apathy. You can be greeted with outright hostility! I once walked up to an employee, (Because I needed help at the customer service desk,) who literally started shaking with anger and chattered in a hurried voice "What do you want? What do you want? What do you need???" All I did was approach her. I didn't say or do anything except walk up to her, yet she was not simply annoyed, she was visibly upset and angry that I dared approach her to ask a question. How dare I! I would cry in my own beer for my Berkeley Safeway experiences but for knowing that I am not alone. Many is the time I've heard upset and angry customers giving the staff hell. Outbursts are common. The staff is quite used to it. They could have a red-faced customer blasting them, and they move or react not at all, completely unconcerned about upset customers or that someone might take a swing at them. Just another day on the job. Which brings me to the clientele. I've been accosted, shoved, bumped into, yelled at, and muttered at by every kind of anti-social hellbat of a customer in there. It's like a Bukowski story in that place. That store is a freak magnet, so be prepared to have an random fellow customer blast you or wave a bible in your face. (True story!) I don't know how much I can fault the store for whacky clients, but that's just the cherry on the parfait for this wonderland of awful people. In hindsight, the place is rather fascinating and entertaining. How could a run-of-the-mill grocery store be so awful?

Yelp
Safeways are Safeways, however this one always seems to have a long line at the only 1-2 manned registers while all self-checkout stations are not in use. Would go anywhere else on principle if this store wasn't right next to my residence.

Yelp
What felt like an eternity of this supermarket being closed, the spruced up Safeway on Shattuck finally opened earlier this month, and it is nothing short of 5 stars . The supermarket boasts an underground parking lot, longer and bigger grocery aisles, even a sushi bar, where you can pick from an array of sushi (see pic) being made fresh in front of you. Two thumbs up on the renovations made despite the long closure. Shoppers know that this supermarket was long over due. Suggestion: How about having this Safeway stay open 24 hours like the one on College Ave?
