Yelp
A little-known vegan food mecca.
I'll admit, I've always been wary of shopping at Safeway. Something about the dimly lit atmosphere and staff always made me feel like I was better off shopping at Acme.
When I finally went vegan, however, I discovered a wide variety of well-known vegan brands at moderate prices. I'd even go as far to say that it is one of the most well-stocked grocery stores in the Dover area when it comes to vegan essentials, on par with Redners.
The produce section contains a wide variety of fresh and organic vegetables, all moderately priced. Then of course, there's the wide array of vegan options, including:
-Follow Your Heart Vegannaise, vegan sour cream
-Organic, non-GMO tofu (from silken to extra firm)
-Tofurkey brand Tempeh
-Vegan hot dogs, veggie burgers, sausages, and lunch meat
-Seitan (which I haven't been able to find at any other grocery store)
Safeway also has a wide variety of vegan and vegetarian foods in its refrigerator and freezer section. Daiya-brand vegan cheese is available in almost every flavor and form, including slices, shreds, and blocks, and Earth Balance butter is stocked as well.
In the freezer section we see Beyond Meat and Gardein products, and, wait for it...
VEGAN ICE-CREAM
Yes, Safeway sells vegan ice-cream!! So Delicious ice-cream is well stocked in multiple flavors and bases, made from soy milk, coconut milk, and almond milk.
The only reason I am not giving Safeway five stars is simply because of the staff. Oftentimes, they're found grouped together in front of the store smoking and glaring at customers. Staff is rarely to be found in the aisles themselves, and many of them have short tempers and nasty attitudes.
I am simply giving this store four stars because of the exceptional array of vegan and vegetarian food.
