Bay Area Grocery Stores Grapple With Staffing Shortages and Stocking Snarls | Eater SF

"I saw that Bay Area-based Safeway was not staffed to handle the surge and, after more than a year of contentious negotiations, reached a temporary agreement with its 30,000 Northern California workers that provides an additional $2-per-hour “appreciation” wage for two weeks, a raise the union says it will push to extend." - Eve Batey

I love this Safeway. I came here around 9 am a few days ago. It wasn't crowded. It was fully stocked with peaches, so I bought two cans of peaches with light syrup. They were at a good price and were good quality. The cashier was very nice.

Great customer service and professional staff. We got coupons for free which was great. The environment was clean, spacious and well organized. It was a good experience shopping for the first time.

I changed to Safeway pharmacy and so glad I did they are the best. Rite aid closed so I got lucky when I called and the pharmacist told me he could do all the transfers. Now I also do some of my shopping there too. Thank you so much for being there for my family

Did not have a good experience in this store. The Customer Service lady working today was not helpful. I only asked her to purchase something off the website that was not in stock. She refused to give me the price that was given to me online and would not make the item available for me to purchase. Told me to wait till Friday- it’s Monday. I thought thats what customer service is for. The days of Good Customer Service I guess are over.

The prices are crazy unreasonably high for commodity items you can buy elsewhere. I’m not including exotic or out of season items. I’m talking everyday things your family needs. I don’t shop Walmart and I’m not comparing this to Aldi or other discount chains. But when a can of soup is over $1 more and everyday items are noticeably more expensive for the very same thing, I don’t understand why someone would choose to shop here for anything you can buy elsewhere. Even Publix is not this expensive, and they have BOGO items every week to make up for it. It so happens that prescriptions here are noticeably cheaper, so I WOULD recommend this store for prescriptions. I was surprised at this sheer number of tags on all of the shelves. It looked absolutely a nightmare for inventory management. I think if they spent less money on putting all the silly tags on all the items on the shelf, they could drop prices on some of these items and still make a huge profit. Have your sales, mark 100 items per week if that makes you happy, and quit with this thousands of items marked with paper tags insanity. There are several reasons Albertsons was run out of South Florida — outrageous pricing and perceived mediocre quality were two of them. I work hard for my money — like most people — and these prices are disrespectfully high. This isn’t a high-end store. It feels like they’re taking advantage of a lot of people that don’t know better. I don’t like that. If Whole Foods comes to Rehoboth Beach as planned, I’ll drive down there. I can buy my Oreos at Target or Redners 😂

I just visited this location. As I do multiple times especially around this time of year. My mother loves the cornbread that they package. I've gone in there in the past and it has not been out and when I ask an employee they let me know that it's in the back and frozen and always retrieve some for me. It's never a problem. I go in this morning and ask the woman working in that department she tells me that it's frozen. I ask if I can get two standard containers. She proceeds to tell me that it is not in her production of things to do right now and refuses to get me an item from the back that she knows she has and I would like to purchase. That never happened before in any store I shop. I'm going to attempt to go back in there later but if this is the new standard of operation at this supermarket I'm going to have to drive an extra 5 minutes to the closest Food Lion, Redner's or Walmart instead.

Google
I have been going to Safeway for many years. I get my prescriptions filled and do shopping. But for the last year or so I have been discriminated against. There’s no doubt in my mind. Well today was the last straw! I’m sick and tired paying higher prices and getting kicked in the teeth. I am so surprised Safeway allows this behavior to go on. I’m sure I’m not the only light skinned woman that has felt it! I’m so done!

Google
From feeding the family to ensuring my getting the right ingredients for my homemade dog food🙄, Safeway always has what I need. Their prices are reasonable so I don't have to sell extra houses to afford to shop here. Most of all it's a great blend of what your expect from Giant value and Wegmans atmosphere. Great Job Safeway! If this review was helpful, give it a 👍🏼! If you want to see more of my reviews, follow my page!

Yelp
Not a good look for the Safeway brand. The store is disorganized with unpacked cartons and crates in the aisles and empty shelves. No one to help you and no available carts. Yes their prices are good, but it was such a bad shopping experience that I will not return.

Yelp
I am in shock of the review given by Ashley C. I was on travel with work and was staying in Dover for a month. I needed to get groceries and other supplies to stock up for the long stay. I had made many trips over to the Safeway to get odds and ends throughout the week. It was always a great pleasure to see and visit with Charles. He was always so kind and wanting to make sure if I needed help finding something that he would point me in the right direction - no matter how busy he was. I always thought he was the only one holding the fort down by himself because there was never anyone else around. I am sure of this because of short staffing. I am writing this to sincerely Thank Charles for the dedication that he had shown while at work and surpass the standard of customer service.

Yelp
Store employees nor management care about customers. Understaffed, bad attitudes and gross misinformation. Requested changes and help for 2 months. Told there would be improvement. None. Tired of waiting, so shopping elsewhere now. Store prices higher at Safeway Dover, De, anyway. Sales not worth driving from another city to Dover, De, particularly in light of store not caring about customers or their concerns. This store epitomizes good help is hard to find. Not a true statement but Dover Safeway has hired the most uncaring, primarily lazy employees in the area. You know what they say, it starts at the top and rolls downhill. That should tell everybody a whole lot about management at Safeway Dover, De, as well as management responsible for that location. To add insult to injury, Safeway Dover, De, rarely ever answers the telephone. If you are lucky enough to reach someone, good luck getting a call back from management for an issue or question that could not be answered during the initial phone call. It is entitled never going to happen during your lifetime. Seriously, including leaving multiple messages in person! Pathetic all the way around!

Yelp
Two very bad experiences: 1. My husband was here getting groceries one night and he had a cart full. There were two employees just chit chatting and no lanes open to check out. My husband asked if they could please ring up his groceries and they told him that self check out was open. He said he did not want to do self check out since he had a lot of groceries. The employees looked at each other until finally one of them sighed and said "fine!" 2. I ordered groceries to be delivered to my house and they didn't even bother putting it in bags. They just sprawled all the groceries out on my front porch. Ridiculous.
google avatar

Marylisa K.

Yelp
By all means go here but be aware that the culture of the store is along the lines of "work would be fine if there weren't all these people here wanting things" I try not to come here-- the kind folks are few and far between. I note that now they charge $.05 for a paper bag. Beware if you have a problem checking yourself out-- they definitely don't like that! That said, it's convenient for a quick pick up item-- treat it like a giant Wawa without the nice people and you'll be fine!

Yelp
Although Safeway has the best choices and selections in the food desert of Dover, their prices are astronomically higher than their counterparts.

Yelp
I am no longer going to shop for my groceries at Safeway in Dover, Delaware. After asking on three occasions to have their employees wear their face masks properly, I counted six of them (including management) with their masks below their noses. I no longer feel this store has the customers' health and safety in their best interest. The sad thing is, there are employees there who I like a lot. They seem to have no problem wearing there masks properly, even, if like the rest of us, it can get uncomfortable. I appreciate their consideration for doing the right thing, and I fear for their safety having to be around others who choose to disregard the store's own policy during this Covid-19 pandemic. Safeway is not the safe way to buy groceries. Low masks = No masks.

Yelp
It was Memorial Day at 9:30 AM when I encountered a disgruntled employee by the name of Charles in the seafood section of the Safeway in Dover, DE 19901 (store 1763). I needed assistance with purchasing a couple of pieces of fish when Charles turned around to another employee and stated, 'Get your people.' Charles was reluctant to help me because he did not work in that section. I am very hurt and offended by Charles's comment and deeply disappointed that a Safeway employee would refuse to assist in any capacity, whether it's their department or not. I value great customer service and this was absolutely not the way an employee should treat a customer. This was my first time shopping here and now I'm having second thoughts about shopping here. If this is the way employees treat customers, I will spend my money elsewhere. I've never been mistreated by a store worker prior to this day and I hope to never experience anything close in the future. Shame on Safeway for allowing employees to work when they clearly don't want to be there. I'm told Charles is also the union representative. I am disappointed and Charles should be removed from any customer service roles going forward.

Yelp
I shopped here last 5/17/2023. The signs that hung above the aisles that tell you what is in that aisle are blank! The signs are still up but there's nothing on them . Who's brilliant idea was that? I do like shopping here they have a great selection of products & there's seldom a wait to use self checkout. They probably higher prices than others but they have the products I want.

Yelp
I don't know why this thing doesn't just let us edit our original reviews, rather than write new ones...anyway they also have nowhere to sit down in here, especially considering there's a Starbucks here also. Most stores at least have a pharmacy area, but they still seem to be hanging onto the 'Covid' excuse. Most places are pretty much back to normal with that. So I guess I'll have to go out and sit in my car in this record summer heat;

Francis M.

Yelp
No shopping carts available on entering the store. Walked to the closed entrance to see if there were any there....no. Inquired of manager (?), told to check right outside store......no. Reentered, and informed same person with a response of "really"? Decided to go to another supermarket. We noted there were carts scattered around the parking lot and in the cart collection area. Poor management.

Denise M.

Yelp
They never have what is listed on their Website, food is out of date, or mislabeled. I will never shop there again

Yelp

Yelp
Great job Safeway! Two lanes open on thanksgiving week. I love waiting in lines for 25 min ;)

Yelp
My all time favorite flower department. Miss Barbara is such an amazing floral manager. She goes above and beyond in order to design our flowers every time we stop buy. Thank you once again for helping us.

Yelp
Well, don't have much of a choice, since Food Lion is so expensive... but WOW where do they find their employees? Not sure what I'm talking about? Just take a ride past the front of the store on any given day. You'll find half the shift out front smoking and eyeballing the customers driving past like the drug dealers in the 'hood. Glad groceries come packaged! I have friends that work at Safeway Corporate in Pleasanton, CA, and love to text them about how poor the customer service is here. If you want to have a really good laugh, load up on "fresh" vegetables and bet with your shopping partner how many the clerk will actually be able to identify. As with everything in Dover, I'm stuck shopping here anyway because there's really not much choice.
google avatar

Denzel P.

Yelp
It's a nice store...but a bit pricey in my opinion. Also long waits in lines. They have a pretty good rotisserie chicken in the hot bar deli and it's cheap so that's dope. 3 stars is about right.

Laurie B.

Yelp
Safeway is one of the better grocery stores in the area. They may have somewhat higher prices, but the quality is unmatched. Never had a problem with long lines and few cashiers...There is also plenty of check yourself out areas. Whenever I need something special from a birthday cake, to a holiday meal Safeway is my store of choice.
google avatar

Dover H.

Yelp
They keep the store very clean and checkout is typically quick. Their vegetables are always fresh and they have an outstanding assortment. They also have a great seafood section and the folks there are always helpful and quick to steam some shrimp up for you when you need it. They also have a Redbox located inside, which makes your movie pickup a lot safer than on the mean streets of Dover. Starbuck coffee is also a plus.

Jacqueline M.

Yelp
This Safeway to me is by far the worse Grocery store in Dover. I tried not to do this but Sunday was the last straw for me. They sold me bad Seafood salad. Soon as it touched my tongue I knew it was no gd and it made me literally sick. Then when I went to return it Monday the lady whom took several minute after being called to come to customer service desk was dismissive when telling her of my experience with the bad salad. I usually try to stay away from Safeway because every time I go in there it's always something like a pack of Italian sausages dated 6/4/19 or packaged deli ham expired or lettuce that's about to expire still at regular price or no Milk. This Store is to expensive to not care about the quality of their products. And sad to say but I will not be shopping at the store anymore until something changes cuz it's ridiculous

Yelp
Stopped in today to pick up some Parmesan cheese. Check out was an exercise that no one should endure. The women at the 15 items or less register was not customer friendly. The customer who she was assisting questioned the price of an item. With the huff she yelled for a bag boy to check on the price of an item. The item was miss marked. The cashier blamed others for poor work, but she never apologized. The next customer had the same issue. Followed but yet another bag boy wandering through the stout looking for the item. This identical patterned continued for the next two customers. However the women in front of me questioned the store policy that if a product is missed marked the customer gets it for free. This created an argument between the cashier and the customer. I had grabbed some garlic bread to go with the Italian dinner I was making. The bread had a yellow sticker that said 99 cents. The bread rang up at $2.89. I told her that price was incorrect that it was marked at 99 cents. The cashier, obviously frustrated stated she knew the bread was more than 99 cents. I took the bread from the bag and showed her the big yellow price sticker that said 99 cents. I got no apology. Only an excuse that was irrelevant. Not my first bad experience here but my last for sure.

Yelp
What is wrong this their telephone???? No matter what number you push once connected....it just hums and then you are disconnected. I have been trying for 2 days to talk to the pharmacy. Guess I'll have to make a special trip there...AGAIN...to get something that they said I would receive in 3 weeks. That was over a month ago.

Mary W.

Yelp
Nothing but frustration and a huge pain......Tried ALL DAY to call to order a cake, They DO NOT answer the phone; not in the bakery dept or the main number . The message tells you that you were "connected" but before rings I got disconnected !! This happened to me about six times today, and when I tried to call back in the summer to order a cake from them. Well I got a cake somewhere else, a store that actually CARES about their customers. I'm DONE with Safeway and will NEVER EVER patronize them again!!

Yelp
A little-known vegan food mecca. I'll admit, I've always been wary of shopping at Safeway. Something about the dimly lit atmosphere and staff always made me feel like I was better off shopping at Acme. When I finally went vegan, however, I discovered a wide variety of well-known vegan brands at moderate prices. I'd even go as far to say that it is one of the most well-stocked grocery stores in the Dover area when it comes to vegan essentials, on par with Redners. The produce section contains a wide variety of fresh and organic vegetables, all moderately priced. Then of course, there's the wide array of vegan options, including: -Follow Your Heart Vegannaise, vegan sour cream -Organic, non-GMO tofu (from silken to extra firm) -Tofurkey brand Tempeh -Vegan hot dogs, veggie burgers, sausages, and lunch meat -Seitan (which I haven't been able to find at any other grocery store) Safeway also has a wide variety of vegan and vegetarian foods in its refrigerator and freezer section. Daiya-brand vegan cheese is available in almost every flavor and form, including slices, shreds, and blocks, and Earth Balance butter is stocked as well. In the freezer section we see Beyond Meat and Gardein products, and, wait for it... VEGAN ICE-CREAM Yes, Safeway sells vegan ice-cream!! So Delicious ice-cream is well stocked in multiple flavors and bases, made from soy milk, coconut milk, and almond milk. The only reason I am not giving Safeway five stars is simply because of the staff. Oftentimes, they're found grouped together in front of the store smoking and glaring at customers. Staff is rarely to be found in the aisles themselves, and many of them have short tempers and nasty attitudes. I am simply giving this store four stars because of the exceptional array of vegan and vegetarian food.
google avatar

LaToya R.

Yelp
The prices are high but I appreciate that it is 24/7 and has a wider variety of Non-GMO Project approved food options. But need more cashiers. Ms. Barbara (i think is her name) she is really nice and funny.
google avatar

Ma-e M.

Yelp
Safeway & Starbucks over rated and over priced. Be careful of the salad bar. It looks unsafe and unsanitary. Buyers handle it and you don't know if their hands are clean. Do you know if yours clean? 100% of our hands are always dirty. In conclusion, any salad bar especially the one at this Safeway is not the safe way to your stomach.

Anthony S.

Yelp
Customer service is normally ok. I had a question about one of the charges and the cashier instantly got an attitude. And pointed to the screen and said "its what it says right there". I asked for a price check and he proceeded to get assistance with frustration written all over his face and posture, even how he proceeded to continue to ring me up. I'll probably go to .... Which is right across the parking lot.
google avatar

Ray P.

Yelp
I really like the design of this place and it has a good layout. Items do seem a little expensive here compared to most other places. The salad/hot bar is very good though. I've bought lunch here many times. Some of the cashiers are rude here and need to be shot. Seriously
google avatar

Jonathan L.

Yelp
Produce is expensive and sparse. Compared to other grocery stores this is one of the nicer ones. Staff is so so, best guy at the checkout line is Kyle, he's super ncie and friendly. A Redners is being built by me and once that's done I'll shop there.

Shelley S.

Yelp
I have shopped here many times. However, yesterday I stopped there for a few things and had coupons for the items. Coupons that I printed DIRECTLY from the manufacturer's website where you have to log in etc., well the cashier told me that the coupons could not have any 'spanish' writing on it?! I was shocked, and curious. I asked why and explained that I had printed from the website (they monitor how many they allow you). She said that she was not sure, but that it had came down from the bosses; accept no coupons with Spanish on it. -The coupons you print from 'Angel soft's website are bilingual. Very, very disappointed in Safeway's new policy and hope others join in to say that this is not right.
