Public Radio Cooking Shows Don’t Get Any More Remote Than This | Eater

"One of the two main grocery options in town, this supermarket struggles to keep shelves fully stocked during the busy summer tourist season and is affected by distribution patterns that route fresher produce through larger hubs first, leaving more limited and lower-quality selections for residents at the far end of the supply chain." - Caroline Delbert

Absolutely rude staff. Bought some beer and the cashier had a ridiculous attitude. My dad showed his Safeway rewards card and he instantly was like: no I need your international passport first. so my dad showed him his Florida drivers license…. he then wanted to see my ID even I was just standing there. when I asked why he said that he needs to check if I‘m a felon… I asked how he would do this and he told me he has all the files on record. Why are we lied at by staff? Get your attitude right and treat customers with respect even if the might have a foreign accent.

Busier n Thursday, Friday and Sunday due to those tourists. Also out of items frequently before the next shipment comes in. Good selection of veggies. An excellent Deli offering prepackaged fresh.

Why is it so hard for this store to keep a simple staple like milk in stock? Several times in the past few weeks they have been completely out of fat free milk and frequently out of 1% as well. Yesterday, they only had whole milk. This problem occurs regularly and isn’t a seasonal issue. The other stores in town have a very limited selection of perishables, especially milk, so we’re totally dependent on Safeway for milk. And they’re doing a lousy job. They need to do better – a lot better.

Google
Very poor customer service the store closes at midnight. I went into purchased 1 pound of sliced ham. They refused to slice it. They’re closed for the evening (Store closes at midnight) it’s 7:45 PM when I requested.. Asked to speak to the store manager. some lady came up and said it takes him two hours to clean up and they’re not allowed to get overtime. So they’re closed stated the lady

Google
Absolutely the worst customer service experience in a long time. Customer service counter couldn't help with he app and told us to ask the cashier when we checked out. Asked produce stocker where the parsley was and got snapped at with "I don't know!" and no help. The only saving grace was Jojo at the self checkout that made everything right. Thanks Jojo! Give that girl a raise!

Google
The grab and go food helped when I needed a quick cheap dinner I could heat in my hotel room and pre-made sandwiches for my tour the next day. Plenty of parking. Easy self check-out.

After several visits to this store and at different times i found the shelves were continuously empty and are not regularly restocked. Having run grocery and produce departments for 20 years, and for a few different companies, with safeway being one, I was very surprised at how poorly this store is run and even more surprised that safeway allows this to be the accepted normal. Being in Alaska and being the only sizable grocery store around is absolutely not an excuse for the out of stock conditions that this store constantly delivers to its customers. Safeway is literally setting itself up to be run out by the first competitor that manages to get a store open. I came away from each visit here frustrated. Safeway, do better.

Yelp
I read some of the reviews and yes, prices have gone up horribly, especially for us seniors on Social Security, and barely making it; however, I need to say that I have been going to Homer store, before it was a Safeway and after it became a Safeway. I have found the staff; checkers, stockers, deli workers, managers, bakery, etc, to be helpful. They help this old woman locate items, and on one occasion even walked me to the product. I have no complaints about the food, but then again, I do not eat deli except to buy chicken strips for the dog. The workers at the deli are helpful, friendly and nice as are all the staff. The problem I have is no answer when calling the store to get Customer service to ask about pick up but after several tries, no good.

Yelp
I stand by my original review. Over the years when visiting Homer, Safeway is your only choice for most items. Today they were out if bagged ice. Thats a big problem during fishing and camping season. The store is perpetually out of things, which is a real problem when you are remote and the only choice. That is a reflection of poor management and planning. Anyone who looks at seasonal fluctuations should know what to expect. I believe what part if the problem is shipments coming to Alaska are very limited and they don't have a storage place to pull from. They, and other smaller grocers should really pull together to find a way to address this issue, because Safeway is not the only grocery that faces this problem with running short of perishable items in between shipments. Get it together guys.

Yelp
What a joke Advertising but was told by person working they do not serve or make sandwiches made to order. No supervisor on staff So I ask why advertisement says you do they said was told to leave it up and management don't care So I wasted my time and Safeway is doing false advertisement they don't

Yelp
Been there twice in the past week. There are empty shelves everywhere, abandoned my empty shopping cart and left. I'm not going to waste any more time shopping here.

Yelp
Apparently, the store had a very good weekend and the shelves are really really empty. We came in for simple necessities... One dozen eggs, two packages of bacon and a gallon of milk. We had a very nice customer that located a dozen eggs in a place they weren't supposed to be. The woman working the self-serve area, JoJo, was extremely helpful and tried to assist us in finding what we were looking for. We witnessed the person in charge, Kristen, being extremely rude when JoJo asked for assistance in locating milk for us. I left that area and was able to find milk, adjacent to the back of the produce section. If Management knows that it's in stock, Kristen should've assisted the customer in getting what is sought after. I give five stars to JoJo and the customer. Zero stars to Kristen. She was also verbally abusive to a young employee regarding where she wanted the shopping carts. Not sure why Safeway has put this person in any kind of supervisory/management position. any of us have worked retail that the customer always comes first. JoJo asked a second time about the milk and Kristin flat out told her no.

Yelp
Shelves are ALWAYS empty. Rarely is there a cashier and the self check helper is always playing on their phone and not helping people. I WILL NOT use the self checkout. If there were another grocery store in town......... we're stuck with Safeway so we're taken advantage of.

Yelp
We are in Homer on vacation. Stopped to get a couple of items. The cashier BRAEDYN (if that's his name, that is what was on the receipt) could not have been more rude. I bought only two items. He never said a word to us. Couldn't even have the courtesy to tell me the total of my order. Only until I looked over his shoulder to read the amount on the screen behind him, was I able to find out how much cash to give him. He handed me change, no words, no eye contact. Obviously, hating ever minute he was helping us. Even in attempt to get some sort of customer service out of him...saying thank you and have a nice day, he couldn't care less. This person needs some training, a break or at least, an attitude adjustment before he should be allowed to work a register with customers. This is the worst treatment we have ever experienced by a cashier. This should be zero stars for customer service.

Yelp
Every since they closed down Chinese takeout and other deli spots, the quality went downhill. Specifically talking about how you could get a ton of orange chicken and rice for like $5. They only prepackage food now, so I decided to get one of the few containers out. I had 3 sad pork scraps, dry rice and an "egg roll" that had mold spores growing. But guess what? They lie about the return policy so when you take it back (obviously not to be sold again) they think you are trying to give it back FOR resale. So $11 down the drain and a bad aftertaste. Also the fruit in the produce is old most of the time, with all the greens wilting

Yelp
I work in Homer occasionally. Because of my schedule, I'm usually looking to grab food early in the morning or late at night. It used to work out fine. Go in the morning, grab a breakfast burrito or something, a sandwich for lunch, and some snacks. Now, there's nothing available in the mornings. Sometimes a pre made breakfast burrito, but no sandwiches, and the deli counter is only open 10-2. I'm down to buying packaged junk. I'm sure the worker shortage is a big contributor, but if there were any other options, this Safeway would be out of business in no time.

Yelp
Just sad. After visiting Homer Spit and watching the world class grade A seafood come straight from the docks and into the hands of fish mongers within hours of the catch it is literally tear jerking to see what they got to offer as far as seafood in this store. Pretty much everything is shipped from Canada or Mexico- what the?! Don't go to Safeway for anything Alaskan made- checked out the produce- all from Cali and the berries from Mexico. Coming from California I recognize the look of Safeway Food & Drug as a grocery store similar to Vons- just with far less Variety and virtually no organic or locally sourced food available.

Yelp
This Safeway has a ton of organic produce and a better homeopathic section (at cheaper prices, too!) than Berkeley! Oh and they must have someone very witty working in their merchandising department. Right in the Kotex aisle, there is a big display of Peanut M&Ms.

Yelp
This is really the only place to go for groceries besides save u more. It's a monopoly so you are stuck with it. It is always packed so they must be making a killing. Of course the city won't let any other store come to town. I tried to get food from their deli but the rice and chicken looked like they had been sitting for a while. Guess you should get in early or pay the prices on the spit.

Yelp
I told a lady their was no Toilet paper and she said she'll help get some after she went to the bathroom with no toilet paper usually when you ask someone they should get you some. Bad customer service. We had 4 people in line to use the bathroom.

Yelp
This store is the only game in town, therefore the staff, cashiers, stockers, Starbucks baristas and cart attendees are the worst ! Not friendly, helpful, don't know the products, are bothered when asked for help!! It seems that everyone puts up with their stinky attitude, I did because I needed to buy food. Hopefully, another food market will open up in the near future and when they start missing their customers maybe they will have better customer service,

Yelp
If Safeway wanted to actually keep you safe during the pandemic, they would have less shelves and more floorspace so shoppers could actually stay 6ft+ apart. Their changes in light of the pandemic are minimalist at best - lazy if we're being realistic. Major issues include; -There is never enough checkers present. Lines are ALWAYS backed up into aisles. -None of the shoppers follow the "one-way" direction signs painted on the floor. The lines being backed up into aisles make this issue even worse. Employees do not enforce the one way rule either. I have seen employees ignore the signs as well on multiple occasions over the last several weeks. -Despite there being "masks required" signs, no employees actually seem to enforce this rule onto customers. In fact, I've seen employees on multiple occasions straight-up not wearing masks in the store over the last couple months. I highly urge Safeway to abolish or at least dramatically shorten aisles with non-essential items like pool toys, cookies and soda. Safeway cares about profits, they don't care about you.

Yelp
Soups are disorderly , and they've been out of containers for almost a week now, so they've got these full pots of soup at 5 PM because people can't actually buy them. Kind of an ugly greyish brown store, doesn't seem to be managed well. Might update the review as I get more experience shopping there but so far, not a very nice Safeway, and I loved the Safeway where I was before.

Yelp
This is the worst supermarket I have ever shopped in. The aisles are too narrow and blocked by Safeway employee re-stocking carts. To make matters even worse, the store is overcrowded during the day and the checkout lines are too long. If possible, its best to shop before 8AM or late at night,

Holly P.

Yelp
Great selection - we did go late on a Sunday night and many items were wiped out - dairy, eggs, lunch meat.

Yelp
After shopping at The Spit, stumbled upon the souvenir section of this Safeway and walked away with wooden bear claw salad tongs and etched wood handle ulu knives for less than... five dollars! We bought gifts for 15 friends and family members, prices so cheap it felt like we went crazy at the dollar store. Thanks Homer Safeway! PS: Best postcard in all of Homer by the bathrooms that read "Alaskan State Bird" with a picture of a mosquito LOL

Yelp
This Safeway is much smaller than others I've been to and one of the only major grocery stores in the area. My experience was similar to that of a Carrs in our area. The blueberries were priced alot cheaper here than up North at almost a dollar less than Anchorage. While the staff appeared dull, our cash register was quite nice and funny (especially when I had to run back in the store from forgetting to buy a few things). There's a Starbucks on site and the flowers in the flower area looked beautiful! .

Kellen D.

Yelp
Great selection but a very small store. If they expanded, it would be a perfect business for Homer. They've got good selections for the town because it's all in one store and it is in a good spot.

Yelp
Daisy in the deli with a birthmark or mole on her face was extremely rude she could use some lessons in customer service!! Also prices are very high at this Safeway maybe due to location?

Yelp
Remodeled or whatever. Fresh and nice. It has everything the gigantic safeway in El Cerrito has, just in a small footprint. Pharmacy... movie rental.. even a starbucks! I'm surprised, more than anything. Homer is like... pop. 4,000? How'd they get a Safeway?

A K.

Yelp
As a local, this store drives me crazy. Every time I get attached to an item, they stop stocking it. Diet Rite soda: gone. Cream of asparagus soup: gone. Canned mustard greens and canned collard greens: gone. Cinch Glass Cleaner: gone. Tillamook Extra Sharp Cheddar: gone. Canned crowder peas and canned field peas: gone. Hunt's Catsup (which doesn't have partially hydrogenated vegetable oil whereas Heinz does): gone. I could go on, but you get the picture. This is the worst-stocked Safeway in Alaska. The Safeways in other Alaska towns carry many of these products, but not the one in Homer. I have to drive 80 miles to get some of the products I use regularly. It is true that they have an attractive display of flowers and potted plants, but even that section is skimpy compared to other Safeway stores in Alaska.
