Danish Hot Dog Pop-Up Returns to Kantine SF - Eater SF

"A Berkeley Safeway that served three minors alcohol in the last year won’t be doing so anytime soon. The store’s license to sell beer, wine, and spirits has been suspended for two months, Berkeleyside reports." - Caleb Pershan

✅ I love the parking — super convenient. ❌ The staff isn’t exactly the friendliest. ❌ I rarely find what I’m looking for; I usually end up buying something similar instead. ❌ There’s no signal and the Wi-Fi doesn’t work well. So if you need to Google something or access your bank account, I recommend doing it before going in. ✅ They’re open late, which is great — but the pharmacy is not. ❌fruits are not the best

🍉 It's so large that most of the time I can't find what I am looking for . 🍉 It's way pricey than trader Joe's which is nearby 🍉 Huge variety of items in the same store so convenient 🍉Their bakery is pretty good and have a wide range of beverage collection 🍉Not recommended for kitchen tools

Google
Pharmacy staff is solid and knowledgeable. I can always count on them to answer questions and fill my orders, and they’ve also helped us out when they know about a pharm manufacturer’s discount that we didn’t know was available. I have gotten all my flu and Covid shots there, too. Use the Safeway WiFi if you need connectivity — if you can do it at a Starbucks I know you can do it at a Safeway.

Google
Store is good. There’s always cars in pick up that shouldn’t be there. There like six spaces for pick up. Clear as day. But people still park there and go in the store and take the parks.

Google
I’ve seen on 3 separate occasions someone come into this store and pee on the produce or on a random isle. Men and women, looks like homeless type. The milk has been spilt all over the fridge it’s in and there rotten chunks stuck to the bottom of cartons. No one ever bothered to clean it. Just keep putting new cartons in spoiled milk chunks for the customers to deal with. Just a nasty store. No cell signal in the store and they rarely have the items I’m looking for so I have to make compromises. Broken glass all over the parking lot so there’s frequent break ins while you’re trying to get groceries. Prices are jacked up likely to overcompensate for their theft, making paying customers pay for items others stole. Avoid.

Google
The friendliest staff in the entire Bay Area!! Every shop/online order is an enjoyable experience directly as a result of the wonderful, kind and helpful employees at this store! Worth driving outside of my area to come to this store.

Google
This Safeway on College Avenue is a case study in how poor design and misaligned priorities can drive customers away. The most glaring issue is the closing-hour policy: all self-checkout kiosks are shut down while only one manned register remains open. This regularly creates lines that snake halfway through the store—even when staff are present restocking shelves and a security guard is stationed near the inactive self-checkouts. It’s not a staffing shortage—it’s a management decision that shifts inconvenience onto customers. The store’s physical layout compounds the problem. Entry is restricted to a single narrow point, controlled by barriers and gates. If you try to exit the way you came in, alarms sound and security intervenes. Exit is only permitted through the manned lanes or the closed-off self-checkout area. Combined with a confusing floor plan, this makes it hard to quickly reach a specific aisle and leave. The design unintentionally wastes customers’ time, and while it seems aimed at deterring theft, it punishes the honest shopper. Better security—more cameras, more guards, clearer signage—would be a fairer solution. Unsurprisingly, foot traffic has dropped. More people are turning to smaller markets like Yasai, or heading to Whole Foods and Berkeley Bowl, because shopping here is just unnecessarily difficult. Safeway needs to overhaul its customer-facing policies and reconfigure its layout—or risk losing even more of the community’s trust.

Google
they charged me way more than the price on the price tags because I didn't have a membership (which one apparently can only get with a US phone number and if you're ok with them tracing your every shopping), the "non-member" price is apparently somewhere in the fine print on the price tags, just ridiculous...

Yelp
Good location, plenty of parking, good selection for a big but not too big store, friendly employees, pharmacy in-store

Yelp
It never seems to fail: A Special price is advertised, but does not show up the receipt. I recently got suckered into their "Five Dollar Friday" deals. I bought, or thought I was buying, 3 of those deals. Roses in a bucket right at the door with a big "5 Dollar Friday" sign on them. Amt on receipt: $7.99. Then the 5 Dollar 8 piece fried chicken. Amt on receipt: $9.99. The final item, sushi, was actually charged at $5. So a 33% correct rate. All of the items had big signs over the product bins saying "5 Dollar Friday". These items did not have individual stickers on them (except the sushi), just the normal bar code. So it feels like there's no way to check. It also feels like a deliberately confusing set up, so that we are deceived. My 2 items should have cost $10, but instead cost $18. An unpleasant surprise. In case you are thinking "why don't you check it as it's being rung up on the register", at this particular safeway, they are very understaffed. There was a large line at the checkout (another negative), the checker was not really paying attention, and said "You can help bag the groceries", so I was busy being a bag boy instead of looking at thing ringing up (third negative). There's also the issue that your Rewards number is entered at the end, so you don't see the real price as it's being rung up. There's a very fast recalc that happens at the end. I now know that I should have stood there in the doorway with 3 bags of groceries at my feet, and gone over the receipt. I'm sure that would have also been pleasant and fast. As intended, I picked up a full basket of other things, not just the 5 Dollar sales that I originally came for. In the future, if I am desperate and use Safeway again, I'll only get the exact item that I can't find elsewhere, and I'll sit in the checkout lane going over the receipt so I catch the errors. And finally, the checker charged me for an extra bag. It's only .10, but I consider it the cherry on the top of this experience.

Yelp
Avoid this Safeway if you can. It's closer to my place so I usually go to this one to make it a quick trip, however, I think next time I'll drive the extra miles. I purchased some lunch meat and typically I don't ever have to worry about checking expiration dates. The lunch meat looked fine. Next morning I open it and it looks weird on the inside. I look at the date and it says it's past its due date. What the hell. On top of that, on the day of, the cashier was either having a really bad day or is a mute. She said absolutely nothing to me. I don't expect them to be over friendly but at least let me know what my total is. It was as if I wasn't even there. This is the case for several employees here. Most of them are younger like in their 20s. Management needs to really vet their hiring pool for qualified employees. The produce is often going bad or very close to its expiration date by the way it looks. Going to the rockridge one next time or over to Trader Joe's for better quality items. 2 stars because the bagger actually seemed pleasant.

Yelp
Once again, I am standing in line at the Safeway deli at 6:28, dinner time. Watching the only deli worker move as fast as he can. Four people in line ahead of me. I can hear some people working away in the back. These deli workers work so hard, but the counter is understaffed. It's not fair to the workers or the customers. It's ridiculous. I wonder how many times I will have to leave a review like this before they realize how poorly they perform at such a peak time.

Alexa T.

Yelp
I come to Safeway primarily because, if I lose my health insurance, the GoodRx coupons have been cheapest for me here in the past. I was doing half my grocery shopping here for the past few years. It's getting a bit shady in a particular way the past few months, though. The only eggs carried now are of a brand owned by Safeway, Lucerne Farms, priced $12.99 per dozen; the butter is all Lucerne or Clover; no vegan butter or affordable eggs here anymore! and the layout makes it look like this is intentionally the only option.
google avatar

Alexandra K.

Yelp
this Safeway absolutely is horrific. More than half the time when you do an online order, the items are expired or put in your car haphazardly so they break, in my case six bottles of wine. I had to go into the store and physically wait 30 minutes for them to process a refund. The amount of incompetence is unreal. There is no management that works here, they can't seem to figure anything out, this will be the absolute last time that I shop at this Safeway.
google avatar

Yelp
I love this Safeway! On Fridays, they have free samples from donut holes, white chocolate iced coffee, guacamole dip, and many other options. They have several deals from sushi to chicken starting at $5. I'm very proud of them for stepping in when food prices are soaring.
google avatar

Yelp
DON'T GO INSIDE IF YOU'RE NOT GOING TO BUY ANYTHING! This used to be one of my favorite Safeway bc of the area, but I won't be shopping here anymore. I came into the store for a product they didn't have, so I tried to leave the store but CAN'T! Took me a good 3 mins to leave; squeezing past someone who was checking out. It was so frustrating! Felt like a prisoner trying to escape a supermarket!! Every unopened lane was blocked by these metal gates, the self-checked lane needed a receipt to get out. I felt like I was punished for not buying anything. Ps. Maybe there's a thief problem with the store, but this is NOT the way to do it.

Yelp
If you want employees literally cussing at you and refusing customer service because they "just clocked in" come here. If you want good customer service go to rockridge.

Yelp
It's a Safeway. For us on vacation here seemed clean , fair prices good selection etc. staff seems good

Yelp
I can't seem to enjoy making the trek here for a Safeway run. Ever since they've replaced the old & dingy Safeway from back in the day, this spankin' modern & brand-new location is a great addition to this part of Oakland's Claremont neighborhood. Aesthetics in such an epically diverse community makes it a great place to get your grocery shoppin' on! Their rooftop parking is what gets me every time I come here, as having a place to park, and to get to walk the neighborhood is super easy at it can get! Weekends can be a pain to snag a spot up in the rooftop lot, however, don't let the craziness deter you from stopping here! This area is definitely a walkable neighborhood, and a one-stop shop for all your retail / service needs! I may sound biased, but getting here is such a smooth-sailing process for me - I can get groceries (check out their amazing clearance section in the back by the restrooms and in one of the end freezers), I can do my banking here at the credit union, get amazing coffee to wake me up at Philz, get fresh pressed juices, pick up some fresh flowers/plants at the shop across the street from Safeway, and so many other things that you can think of about this amazing store! Highly recommended for those wanting to check out a different Safeway from the neigboring 'burbs along the greater East Bay region! I don't know about you, but this particular Safeway gives me that Pacific Northwest neighborhood feels!
google avatar

Sheila S.

Yelp
Convenient to have in the neighborhood as it is big and clean and they have unisex restrooms in the back. There is a pharmacy pick up and café as well. I don't usually shop in store as I love delivery, but great to have in the area. There's also a large parking lot on the upper level with elevator or stairs down.

Yelp
Running errands. Planned 2 hours. 75% of this time was in the checkout line. No other errands could be done. Poor cashiers! They must get so many annoyed customers. Stop understaffing this store! Realized when I got to the car that I forgot the whiskey I came for because you aren't allowed to put it in your cart but have to ask for it from the cashier. Which is either good or very sad because this checkout line made me need a drink.
google avatar

KIM Z.

Yelp
Emailed their customer service. Still haven't heard anything about them fixing their wifi. I still avoid this location at all cost

Wah C.

Yelp
Absolutely the worst customer service all the way from the shift manager to the clerk working the sandwich deli counter on Friday afternoon. I will never again visit this store. I would not be surprised if the corporate offices decide to close this location forever. Anti-theft automatic gates are installed to prevent stealing, but they treat paying customers like trash.
google avatar

Yelp
The review is for the Deli only. The $5 Friday is always a win. Usually it's the 8-pcs Fried Chicken (dark), however today was BBQ Pork Rib Tips and Meatloaf. The ribs tips were delicious! With a mild sweet/ tangy sauce. The meatloaf was fresh out of the oven and will be great for sandwiches later. The deli staff have always been very courteous and helpful. Perhaps the only shining example of the store staff!

Yelp
I'm so mad at how terrible this place is. Car got broken into. The security guard's answer was "well I was on lunch. This happens almost every day" Awful
google avatar

Fred K.

Yelp
Shopped here for the last time this evening. Sure, there's not much on the shelves and the clientele can be sketchy. But this time, I return to my car on the roof of the Safeway with my youngest to discover that someone had smashed the back window and stole his bookbag. No security to be found - at all. A lone assistant manager came out to "help," which consisted mostly of him telling me (at least five times) that it wasn't Safeway's problem since they didn't actually own the parking lot. Bystanders showed sympathy and a couple of young ladies actually witnessed the crime but it's Oakland - so good luck. Shop ANYWHERE else. Stay far away from this pit of despair.
google avatar

Dave S.

Yelp
A cashier was ringing up my purchases without the tagged discounts, I pointed the problem out and he claimed the items weren't on sale. A manager eventually appeared, I followed him to the area the products were at and showed him the discounts. He told me the prices were for a sale beginning the following day. I explained that was illegal. He returned to the cashier and angrily rang up the discounts. I received no apologies only nasty looks. This is no way to run a store. I wonder what else they're up to at this location. There are many other stores nearby, the Safeway at 51st & Broadway, which generally is open two hours later, a Trader Joe's, two Whole Foods. There is no reason to patronize the College Avenue Safeway.
google avatar

Elizabeth T.

Yelp
I like this Safeway. It's safer parking wise than most others in Oakland and is always well kept. I can't help but point out when I receive noticeably good customer service and today Salima did just that. Life can get hectic, so coming across an individual who is super kind and helpful is bigger than it seems. Thanks for the help and being super kind, Salima!

Yelp
This is not a location that I go to much. In the 90's, they had the reputation (along with the Orinda location), for passing their old, not quite so fresh produce and meat, to locations in urban area's with a large ethnic, minority populations (El Cerrito, Richmond, etc.) At that time, I stopped shopping at Safeway because I resented that and started going to Whole Foods/EC Natural). This location has been rebuilt, but it still looks old and dank inside. I went there for a soda, but didn't find what I wanted. I'm not a soda drinker, and wanted a 16 oz soda to go with a sandwich that I bought earlier. I didn't find anything. The truth is that even when these stores are renovated, they still look like the old stores I remember from my past. The got a third star because I was able to go to the restroom. And after walking through and seeing nothing that I wanted, I appreciated being able to go. The bathroom wasn't the cleanest, but it was OK.
google avatar

Humphrey O.

Yelp
Improperly staffed majority of time. Long checkout lines throughout the day. Tried shopping different hours but same results. At times when lines are long, customers argue which lines to wait in and have seen some w/ loaded carts use the express line. No markings on floors or employee to direct traffic for queuing. 'Pinching pennies' by management through understaffing is costing them loss in business.
google avatar

Sebastian R.

Yelp
I usually come her for my groceries throughout the week. Not too far from campus, and has a great parking structure above the store which is convenient for those that drive. Another thing I love as a student is their member pricing, which has helped me to save a ton of money over time. In addition, most things I need are here whenever I come. Clean, safe, and a great place to get groceries at an affordable price!
google avatar

Yelp
What was a mediocre experience before has become more 1950s Soviet. Probably to avoid "inventory shrinkage", they put gates past each entrance along with guards, so once you are in, you are in, and if you don't buy something it's pretty awkward. I guess they must have fired help staff to pay for these guards because the self-checkout often has nobody to help with problems, and those who do show up are often pointedly rude in a way I've never seen before. They are just down the street from me, and sometimes I need something in a pinch, but even then, I'm going to avoid this place in the future. If you have any alternative, you should as well. This place is a 10.0 on the dystopian scale.

Mohammed A.

Yelp
Horrible horrible. Store hours says 2 am but I arrived a hour early and it's not even open. Also it's hella dirty everywhere.

Jimmy N.

Yelp
Takes 15 minutes to get anything locked, which half the store is, wasted an hour, terrible
google avatar

Tim L.

Yelp
Probably this Safeway store sells the worst Safeway sushi in the Bay Area. I picked up a Hawaiian Roll for lunch. The rice was not fully cooked but the rolls were sticked together though. Like the rice had been cooked last night and kept in the fridge. The tuna strips garnished over the rolls didn't look fresh as well. Well, I won't choose sushi at this store ever again.

Yelp
I love this Safeway. It's my favorite out of the rest in the Oakland/Berkeley area. It's clean, large, has easy parking, and is conveniently located next to tons of restaurants/shops/coffee. The "Just For U" deals also offer free items that I like coming to pick up! These have included included oat milk, lala yogurt, protein-packed yogurt, beef jerky, etc. It's not one of the cutesy-pootsie local shops, but it's efficient and it does what I need well: provide groceries. I have not purchased anything from their deli area, but I really enjoy their bakery. In COVID times especially, I love that they wrap the french bread loaves in a plastic bag before putting it in a paper bag. I know this is blasphemous for the Berkeley area. Is it eco-friendly? No. Will it help me feel better about buying my bread loaf? Definitely. And as an added bonus it keeps better. I've purchased loaves in just the paper bag from the Gourmet Ghetto Safeway and they've often been really stale. Their produce section is also larger than the three other Safeways in the area, with fruit often much more ripe. I still prefer the produce at Sprouts, but this is a good alternative. Getting into the parking lot can be a bit difficult if you're coming from the College Ave side, since this is often a congested, high-traffic street. This is a great, efficient way of getting your grocery items for the week. And as an added bonus, you can pick up items some local favorites before heading back home!
google avatar

Katie C.

Yelp
Good place to grab grocery or whatever you need really! I also go here for the Starbucks inside which is great. The only thing I would complain about is the fact that there is zero cell phone service inside which can be a problem when trying to look up products but overall is a good standard grocery store! EDIT: there has been many car break-ins at this location lately. I would avoid this store or make sure you are quick and don't have any belongings in the car AT ALL.
google avatar

Katie Y.

Yelp
In the COVID era especially, going to Berkeley Bowl or Trader Joe's is a multi-hour, multi-person affair, and sometimes I just need to do a quick trip. This Safeway fills that void for me. It is large, well-stocked, and not too crowded. There are a lot of self-checkout lines if you have a small basket (and no alcohol). Last Sat at 10am, there was only one register open, so unfortunately those folks had to wait a bit. Parking is super easy. It is well-lit, but because it's on the roof with not that much foot traffic, I don't feel totally comfortable coming myself after dark.

Michael S.

Yelp
You must ask to use the rest room, although the pharmacy is reasonably efficient and they do have fresh fruit cups of mixed berries etc.
google avatar

Theresa F.

Yelp
If I could give it an 0 I would. I pack food from the serve yourself Chinese food, while buying groceries. When it comes to bag all my groceries everything has been loaded except my Chinese food. This is happen 3 times now. They pack the backs, but doesn't add them to my other groceries. By the time I come home to unpack, the food is not there. The only thing I can think is, employees are pocketing the food. And "forgetting" to pack the food. Beyond disappointed.

Beth A.

Yelp
I used to love this store but in the past few months there are major problems. (1) prices are missing - BEWARE - if there is no price don't select it - my bag of lemons cost me $5 per lemon! (2) LOTS of items have no prices posted. (3) MARKED PRICES are not honored when you check out! I am now on a fixed income and buy frozen dinners that must be under $5.00. I select them carefully. When I get to the checkout, they cost over $6.00. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE. When I complained the first time the clerk said I must be wrong. I thought it was just mistakes, but now I'm concerned that Safeway is sneaking more money out of customers hoping they won't notice? I've had it with this Safeway. I'm going to a different one and hope they act better (I'll try the one on Shattuck in Berkeley)

Yelp
Great store pleasure to shop and work at food in the deli taste delicious, large selection of produce groceries, seafood, florals, and bakery. The inside is real big. convenient location next to Bart AC Transit and Berkeley plenty of students come from the college to shop for groceries and get liquor and the courtyard is inviting

Yelp
Lost one of my AirPods in the gutter under one of the aisles. I asked an employee named Hanane for help, and she was so creative and found a long stick somewhere in the store which I used to retrieve the AirPods. Literally saved me hundreds of dollars. I can't thank you enough that was so nice
google avatar

Emani W.

Yelp
The only reason I'm leaving a 1 star is because the 3 employees kept their integrity and commitment to the policy which I can respect. But as a bar an event catering company coming into supply my business the Excuse that was given on the behalf of the store and their negligence should not be pushed upon the customers nor should the customers receive punishment the lack there of equal treatment. The policy states that each party of the group Has to be carded if they walk in the store together or or purchase something together when there was clearly evidence that they didn't apply to everyone it only went to a certain status of people who they deem suspicious. I witnessed them not carding a full group for an alcohol purchase then turn around and card me and the person I was with for an alcohol purchase. When stated that one of the party did not have their ID and they are clearly over the age of 30 the people from my party said their goodbyes and left so I can continue my purchase they continue to refuse because the person was with me as we were engaging in a conversation catching up in the store. I then asked for the manager and the managers excuse was at that location they lost their liquor license and that everyone has to be carded which I respect the policy I just wish and need it to be enforced for everyone as I stated before. This location will no longer receive my business anymore!!!

Yelp
Eyesore in the Rockridge - I've avoided this place successfully for years until the other day where I found myself just next door. Bad parking, horrible traffic and a darkness looms over the place. This Safeway doesn't fit in with the beautiful old neighborhood. Its sticks out and not in a good way. The style of it doesn't fit in with anything around it. Rooftop parking is nothing to look forward to. Electric vehicle charging station looks like it was shoved in the last corner.... usually these stations are placed close to the elevators along with the disabled parking. Lots of repainting currently under way. Maybe they are trying to fix all the problems here. Horrible traffic - this "Safeway Lifestyle" store has clogged College Ave since it opened especially during rush hour traffic. Big rigs unloading seemed to have been an afterthought during construction. As a result there is this darkness that hangs over this store. Inside is oddly full of bad feelings and some sort of hostility. Items are hard to find. Floor plan difficult to navigate. Help is hard to find. I used self check out. I didn't have to directly deal with any of the 'help' here. Try to avoid this store if you can. There is a Trader Joes just down the street.

Yelp
I've never been a fan of Safeway, but what I am a fan of is convenience. I guess you can say that Safeway and I have a love/hate relationship. This particular Safeway is super convenient as it is located close to where I work. If it wasn't nearby, I would rarely pay this place a visit. So, are you ready for the breakdown? Ready... set... aaaaand GO! The goodie goodie: I must admit that this store carries a lot of great items. I come here at least once a week to load up on produce, carbs, and other needs. This store is usually clean and it's generally easy to find what I'm looking for. There's a Starbucks conveniently located inside, so I can get my caffeine fix while lollygagging up and down the aisles. Their soups, hot foods, and salads from the deli are absolutely delicious! Their chicken noodle soup is Godly... GAAAWDLY people! I could eat this soup every single day of my life! Looove when they have their summer salads out! I'm obsessed with their super food kale, seafood, and Chinese chicken salads. Super yum! This is definitely a great place to do lunch! I'm also a huge fan of their deals! When they have sales... oh, it's ON! I love typing in my phone number and watching those prices drop! I'm super appreciative of their self checkout lines because sometimes your girl is in a hurry, mmkay? The bad: The service here is hit or miss but mainly a miss. I don't think I've ever seen so many employees with bad attitudes before! I guess I notice it more because I come here often, but I am regularly abused by their stank attitudes when they are having them. No smiles and barely a "hello" unless I initiate it first. This Safeway, along with most other locations now unfortunately, always seem to understaff their stores. Particularly, the checkout lines. Most of the time, I can get away with just going to the self checkout line when I'm just getting a few things. But, don't let it be after 5 pm! This store becomes a catastrophe after work is over. It always seems like there are only 2 checkers manning the lines during their most busiest times. Someone needs to reevaluate this pronto please! The ugly: Their produce... and their floral department. I cannot tell you how many times that I've purchased fruit from here only to end up throwing it in the trash because it's practically rotten within just a couple of days. Just recently, I purchased a bag of oranges and brought them back to work. The next day I went to eat one, and low and behold... I cut into that sucker and it was MOLDY! Ugh! Safeway... please STOP selling bad fruit! This is not Grocery Outlet! You already charge an arm and a leg for your produce, so please "produce" some better fruits and veggies. And, don't even get me started on their Floral department! There is never anyone there... ever. It's always a struggle to find someone to even ask, and then it becomes a struggle for THEM to find whomever is supposed to be working that department. If you were properly staffed, you wouldn't have this issue. I've had to wait as long as 30 minutes just for them to find someone to help me, and that's on top of having to wait for them to make my balloon or floral arrangement. Ridiculous. At the end of the day, I still keep coming here because... well, it's right down the street. I have to make with what's due. Hopefully, they'll make some changes here so that I, along with their other customers, will not have to suffer any longer.

Yelp
Alright wtf. The security situation is completely dystopian. You can't exit without a scan of your receipt and there's only one portal that you can use. It's creepy the guy at the gate gave me a hard time asking me if I already used my receipt. What ? He d at keyed my exit until I made eye contact for like. 15 seconds without blinking The security in the parking lot just gave me a serious mad dog eye stare into my windshield because I'm sitting in my car after shopping. I'm certain they have theft issues. However it's so depressing here. I grew up down the street. I'm a townie. This is a neighborhood store. Well it used to be. If you'd like to be made to feel like a criminal in your own town go here immediately.

Yelp
This is my neighborhood Safeway which I've patronized since 1970. But apparently they see my neighborhood as a war zone. First big metal gates went up at the entrance. Today I found that 6 of the items I needed--none liquor--were in locked cabinets. Tylenol. Shampoo, ivory Bar Soap. CLIF BARS!!!!!! I went in search of an employee to unlock them. Fourteen minutes and 34 seconds later I had my items. Not acceptable. Staff are frustrated and unhappy and not to blame. (Safeway staff are always unhappy. My checker railed against the fat cats who rake in the big bucks. I was incredulous.) Onward to Whole Foods and Berkeley Bowl. .

Yelp
The most expensive Safeway location i have ever visited! Especially prices on veggie section were extremely! $3.99 for roman tomatoes! Come on!!!

Yelp
I went here on Tuesday around 7:30pm to pick up a few items. When I returned to my car about 30 min later, the rear passenger window was broken and the back seat was pulled down despite my car being parked near an outdoor lamp / bike rack and close to the elevators/stairs. Nothing was taken fortunately, but now I have to take time off work to get my window fixed. Usually there is an outdoor roaming security person, but I didn't see anyone so I found a store employee to report it. The employee told me to file a police report as this is the only way to access the security footage of the parking lot. The employee also mentioned another customer reported a car break-in a few moments earlier. Ugh... It appears Safeway doesn't own the parking lot and contracts with a vendor, but shouldn't Safeway work with their vendor to ensure adequate security and safety measures to help prevent smash and grabs?! Also, what happened to the outdoor security person? Also, I haven't loved the customer service at the Pharmacy counter at this location. They call/txt to say prescriptions are ready for pick-up; however, on several occasions they weren't and the desk clerk told me to come back in an hour or the following day for common maintenance prescriptions. Pretty frustrating. The car break-in was the last straw. I'm going to shop elsewhere.

Yelp
Not only have they raised prices and reduced coupons and discounts unreasonably, but they spoiled one of their greatest values and premade products, The All American Sub. It's now bland, no dressing as before or tomato, and they don't discount it on Fridays as before. Shame on you all Safeways!

Yelp
The people checking customers out don't seem to know any codes for produce. They are very slow. It takes too long to get out of the store.

Yelp
Tried to leave through the self check out and they literally wouldnt let me out. The guy said I needed to scan my receipt. So you need a key to leave the grocery store? How is this legal? I bought my stuff, that is the end of the transaction. You cant hold paying customers hostage because you have a shop lifting problem. Feels like a prison in there now. Going to avoid it as much as possible.

Yelp
This is the worst safeway i've ever been too - take in mind i am a server as i write this - So i get into the store at 1:49am (they close at 2am) so with 11 minutes to spare there is only one door open (clearly doing this so they are technically "still open" even though it's like the last door you'd go through. Anyway i walk in and see a self checkout is still open and i'm like okay i go in to grab one thing and as i'm about to check out (1:55am) a man refuses to let me check out walks me back to put the items back and makes me leave the store. I have worked in customer service my entire adult life and as a customer service representative despite whether or not you want to go home (which believe me i understand) it's your responsibility too keep the doors unlocked and a register open until you are supposed to close. It's one thing to start doing your closing duties early, or even to close all the other doors and just leave one open, but to refuse service to customer while a self checkout machine is still on. Understandably i get it, but the items were in my hand, and i was already checking out. Usually i wouldn't leave a review about something like this but since covid a lot of employees are taking advantage of the shortened hours changes to the workplace that the entire reason i drove 45 minutes to get here was to originally go to another grocery store (safeway again) that was supposed to be open 24 hours this one was closed at 12am and left a note that said "will return at 6am" (again for their supervisors so they can claim they were still open). believe me i understand understaffing and having to close early, but to flat out refuse me service and honestly if he had said "look ma'am im really tired and we are almost closed could you please do me a favor and try to grab your items elsewhere?" i would be irritated but i would do it ofc.

Yelp
The best Safeway in the Bay! The entire area is a vibe. The fruit is fresh and sweet. Meats and eggs are priced appropriately. The customer service is friendly. Coming from the East Coast this is the best Safeway in the area!

Yelp
TL;DR Standard Safeway, but catered toward college students PLUSES: + open 24/7 + convenient, right by 51B bus stop + parking upstairs DELTAS: - slow slow slow - $$$$ for produce

Yelp
Wanted a sandwich today went into Safeway the service is terrible, everyone acted as if they hate their job , customer service seems as if it doesn't exist in the Bay Area any longer. The icing on the cake was the female employee leaning up against the counter with her arms folded & adjusting her glasses while wearing gloves, she attempted to take my order/prepare my food without changes her gloves. Due to me being uncomfortable I decided to grab a packaged sandwich from the shelf, I also noticed she prepared food for a customer then printed his sticker receipt & proceeded to assist the next customer without changing her gloves this was awful to witness. I will never visit that deli again.
