Little Original Joe’s Opens in San Francisco This Week | Eater SF

"I learned that Safeway is removing self-checkout at some Bay Area stores because of "the increasing amount of theft"; the company declined to specify which locations, but KTVU reports the Pleasant Valley Road store in Oakland and certain stores in San Francisco and Emeryville have already had the machines removed." - Lauren Saria

Google
While im grateful to have a huge sprawling modern grocery store in my neighborhood I am still let down by this location. This location has terrible problem with long lines deep into the aisles, person brought a chair in anticipation of waiting in the line. the staff is always outnumbered. Also Customer Service or managers seem to struggle to provide basic services like Propane rental, Carpet cleaner rental etc. The service truly is sub par

Amaury A.

Google
They’ve locked up a bunch of products but don’t have any personnel in the evening to open the windows. They have one register open for the entire store at 10pm, creating an aisle-long line. Most people have <15 items. At a MINIMUM there should be 2 aisles open and 1 personnel to help open windows. I hope they go out of business and get replaced by a competent and fair-priced grocer.

Naveed A.

Google
The best location and the best customer service. This Safeway has lots of food and nonfood items. Has fresh food and fruit. Has seafood and cook food. The best thing is has a pharmacy and Starbucks inside the Safeway. Almost has everything you need. Really Safe and secure with a really big parking lot. I found everything I need today.

Sawyer K.

Google
Cashiers are way too understaffed. The line was down 50% of the isle behind it. After waiting 15 minutes and having at least 15 minutes left, I just left my food. I do not plan to ever return. Trader Joe’s has twice the active cashiers and takes will be legitimately 40 times quicker.

Sang H.

Google
I was pleasantly surprised to see Safeway offering an Asian food hot bar. The dishes looked fresh and tasty! However, the checkout experience could be improved. There were only four cashiers and a long line of customers waiting, which made the process slower than expected. Overall, great food options but hope to see faster service next time.

Xander R.

Google
The store has a good selection of items, but none of that matters when it comes time to check out and you have to wait 30 minutes or more in line. It is absolutely unacceptable to only have one cashier at night. Tonight there were two, but the line was still about 25 people. Trader Joe's closes at 9:00 I'll happily shop there for higher quality ingredients and lower prices I'm in and out in 15 minutes flat. The store is way busier than this one. There are so many more people, but they have the cashiers to handle it. How hard is it to have four check stands open? At least the Grand avenue Safeway has a self checkout option. I really don't see why anyone shops here anymore. If you just have four check stands open at night everything will go so much smoother. Even pack n save understands that.

Trevor J.

Google
If you're gonna get rid of self checkout why not hire enough people to run the registers? I'm debating just tossing my cart in gobacks three lanes are open and the lines snaking to the back of the store.

Brooke R.

Google
The pharmacy is the best pharmacy in Oakland and that I have been to in a long time 3 different retailers were so bad. I was so pleasantly surprised to go to a good pharmacy at Safeway. From the moment I called the guy helped me in a kind way he even made calls to transfer my meds from a different retailer then he called me back to insure that he was working on it and he answered all of my questions and filled my RX in a good timely matter. When I went in to pick up my Rx the lady at the counter with blonde hair was so friendly and helpful and she really cared about me. The pharmacy looked so clean and organized. I haven’t been this happy in a long time. They are really doing an excellent job. I wish I could give more stars. Thank you Safeway pharmacy.

Yelp
10:41am legit for real I saw the security guards chase down a woman who stole a box of Poptarts and a salad as she ran away outside! Then about 15 minutes later I saw a homeless woman steal bags of candy from the candy aisle inside and try to run out. This Safeway is hige and actually has a great selection of stuff. A lot of stuff is locked up due to the theft. There's plenty of parking and it's a nice neighborhood. Too bad for all the cleptos stealing stuff. If it wasn't for the one way exit and enter, the general feeling of unsafety and guards following us everywhere and only 2 checkout lanes...this would have been a good Safeway at 5 stars. But due to having to wait forever for the checkout and all the crazy stuff it's just a 3 star grocery store.

Yelp
We went for 2 things, an anniversary card and store gift cards. They have a very small collection of greeting cards in there floral department. And I mean real small. It's only one rack. When we got there we joined a gentleman who was looking for a birthday card. there were more birthday cards then any other card on the rack. He still was having trouble finding the right one. He finally settled on two. Us on the other hand there was only 1 anniversary card available and it didn't have the sediments we wanted to we settled for a nice blank card. As for a store gift card. I looked and looked at their racks and racks of gift cards and didn't see a Safeway Gift Card. I finally asked a sales associate, and she showed me where they should be and there were half a dozen spots for them, and they were all blank. I can't believe it no store gift cards. They had plenty of other store cards and visa cards, but that doesn't help when you really need a Safeway gift card so someone in need of groceries could be given money to spend only at Safeway. We also asked our checker if they had gift cards and he didn't have an extra stash in his register. So disappointed.

Yelp
I've gone to this location several times over the years and it's always been INCREDIBLY slow but filled with practically everything you need. The food options are the same as any other Safeway and this location is definitely more spacious than others. Parking can be chaotic, depending on the time that you go, but overall, I've never had an issue finding a space. A major plus is that the location is 24 hours but do keep in mind that also means less staff for more of the quieter late night/early morning hours. 3/5.

Yelp
This is the only Safeway in the whole Bay Area that has authentic hot Chinese Food! The chefs are Chinese and they make the most delicious teriyaki chicken and salt and pepper chicken wings! My family and I love coming here. Every dish the chefs make tastes really good. They also always have new items they wok- up. The food here is cheaper and even more delicious than nearby restaurants.
google avatar

Lisa D.

Yelp
I agree with other poster who said there are huge lines, so don't expect to come in and out. I went in today to purchase one item. Had to wait 30 mins in line because not enough registers open. This was on a Tuesday morning too.
google avatar

Mamie D.

Yelp
I always forget why I don't come here until I get here. It's only two registers open and at least 50 people in line. The line is to the back of the store. This is absolutely ridiculous.

Yelp
This is my local Safeway in Emeryville, and while I've been here over 20 times, it's usually not my go-to grocery store. I typically prefer Costco, Grocery Outlet, or Trader Joe's nearby. That said, when I need something late at night or just want a quick and convenient stop, this place gets the job done. It's open 24 hours, which is a huge plus. Inside, they have a Starbucks, pharmacy, deli, seafood section, and a good variety of food overall. I haven't had any issues with the produce, unlike some of the reviews I've seen. There's lots of parking, and the store feels safe thanks to indoor security. The area isn't in the best part of Emeryville/North Oakland, but I've never had any bad encounters, and it's well lit at night. One downside: the lines can get pretty long, even late at night. They seem understaffed during those hours. They used to have self-checkout machines, but I'm guessing theft was a problem, so that option is gone.
google avatar

Anson A.

Yelp
It's a grocery store doing what grocery stores do. Pretty good deals all around. Biggest issue is there are almost always long lines at checkout (long gone are the days of 3'a a crowd). I have much love for people that have to work in food service (deli employees in this case) but dang these guys move like molasses.

Lisa R.

Yelp
Sushi counter here is great - especially Sheila. Have ordered party platters of veggie sushi - beautiful and great price. The bad - here on Sunday afternoon. Only 3 check stands open :( Waited in line 15 min to check out.

Sammie G.

Yelp
Made a small purchase so that I could get cash back. They then refused to give me cash back, belittled me and stated I made a mistake during the transaction... Do not come to this Safeway. Alexander and his team do not know how treat their guests
google avatar

Min C.

Yelp
This was my neighborhood Safeway for a while (ever since its new location), but perhaps soon no longer. I've overcome this one manager who I've always clashed with by avoiding him whenever possible. Now, there is something I cannot pass through. The self-checkout area is now gone. Starting this month, no more self-checkouts are available, meaning longer lines at checkout. And I mean long. The last time, I was fortunate to have seen that the lines were 10+ parties long and had to weigh quickly whether my hamburger buns were worth the wait. I'll hope the College Ave one still has the self-checkouts intact or I am going to have to jump ship on go-to grocery stores...

Yelp
On a cool Friday evening in late March, this place gets a three-star review. The store interior is nice. They had a decent selection. But entering the store is entirely too complicated. Center doors are only for exiting and doors for entering but only one of the indoors is open.

Ruth M.

Yelp
Has to be the worst Safeway in existence. The line is always 2 hours long and when i order online they have attitude ‍

Brian A.

Yelp
This grocery store has 10+ regular checkout lines as well as a self checkout center. Despite this, self checkout is NEVER open, and there are never more than 2 regular checkout lines available. In the 2 years I have been going to this grocery store, the checkout line has gone at least halfway down the aisles EVERY SINGLE TIME! This is clearly not an issue with being short staffed, as there are constantly multiple employees standing around doing nothing. Additionally, rather than have the employees who are doing nothing contribute to helping the checkout line, they instead have them stand at the end of the line halfway down the aisle simply to tell you that the line is now closed- now one fewer lines available. If this store could open its self checkout center, or have its employees actually do their jobs, this problem could easily be solved. In the time it takes to wait in line to checkout, one could easily just drive to a different Safeway, shop, checkout, and drive home. Note to management and corporate- If you cannot manage a grocery store, then you should not be in charge of managing a grocery store.

Yelp
I called this Safeway's customer service department in order to ask if they offered the UC Berkeley student/staff discount cards here, since mine is expiring and I need to get a new one. I was on hold for at least 5 minutes, then it rang multiple times, and then I was sent back to the phone tree again, so I don't know if someone didn't pick up in time or purposely let it ring out. I had to go through the phone tree two more times before finally on the third occasion, someone picked up. At first the representative wasn't sure if the location carried the UCB discount cards so they temporarily put me on hold, but then picked back up and told me that this Safeway, and all Safeways in general, no longer issue the UCB discount cards. I was surprised to hear this, so right afterward I went and called two other Safeways in the area (the one on College Ave in Oakland, and the one on 5th St in Alameda). Both of those stores' customer service departments indicated that UCB discount cards are still being issued. I'd recommend that this location, and also Safeways in general in the area, should really make sure that their employees have the correct information about whether the discount cards are still being issued, and it would've been better if staff at the various stores actually knew which other nearby locations also carry the cards. It doesn't give me faith in this Safeway on Broadway that I will get helpful or correct information in the future.

Yelp
I've been living in this neighborhood for many years and have gone to this particular location numerous times. The majority of employees have a very negative attitude and are extremely unfriendly. Customer service training should be a priority when dealing with the public.
google avatar

Tom H.

Yelp
I challenge you to find a worse run grocery store. It's so close to where I live yet I regret going here every time. You WILL wait 20-30 minutes in line for the cashier, you will likely not find carts or baskets, the person at customer service (to open locked cabinets) WILL always be on break or lunch. Dont waste your time, drive to any other location.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
I'm reminded every time I go to Safeway why I don't like shopping here. The management is not capable of properly staffing and have rediculous lines. Thank god I have 3 other grocery stores near.
google avatar

Lynnell C.

Yelp
This is literally the worst Safeway in Oakland. I placed an online grocery order last night for delivery this morning, but guess what? The order shows as delivered, yet there are no groceries at my door or downstairs at the desk. Last month, they got my order wrong, and it took over a month to get my refund. Which I only just received a few days ago. Now, I'm out of money and groceries again. And it's because I didn't get my groceries! This is beyond frustrating. Safeway needs to get it together. I seriously dislike this place!

EJ T.

Yelp
Lines are always super long and move very slowly. No more self checkout. Improperly charged for items multiple times. Some staff try, and I appreciate it. But some really don't care about anything. Also the advertising/panhandling outside the front gets annoying.

Dene C.

Yelp
Possibly the worst Safeway I've ever been to. We begin with meth addicts on the car-park stairs, and a severe shortage of trolleys and baskets: in fact there are never baskets by one of the entrances. All the toothpaste is locked behind glass. They removed all the self-check counters for the same reason: theft. The lines at checkout are usually bizarrely long: Some of the produce (e.g. sprouts) are moldy on the shelf. Once you've dealt with all this, you need to deal with the one-way system they've incorporated to deter thieves which is just eye-rollingly irritating. If it wasn't the store I had easiest access to on foot I'd never go there.

Erin H.

Yelp
An unspeakably bad Safeway - perpetually understaffed, with lines snaking down the entire length of an aisle, ALWAYS. They also make it incredibly difficult to get in or out of the store because they trust their customers not at all (which is the same reason they did away with self checkout, which was once their saving grace). This is my local Safeway, so I can't avoid it, but I always dread going there. The cashiers are nice, but they deserve better. Safeway HQ - do better for Oakland!! This place is the worst.

Joshua

Yelp
This has been our most visited Safeway in Oakland. Each individual Safeway has its own highlights and limitations. The Broadway Safeway is one of the largest in the area and part of a great shopping complex. Best for people with their own cars as its a far walk from the roads. It has bakery catering (not all stores do). Online shopping: Pick-up (inside) and delivery shopping has its technical moments but the experience at this store has been overwhelming positive. Tip: If its a catering order, pick-up will be at the deli and/or bakery. Whether late night, weekends, or evenings - this location maintains a clean and ordered store. It has a dedicated bathroom area at the Starbucks annex. There is an ex-large floral section. There is an extra-large wine section. There is a large to-go/serviced deli area. Buyer beware, more than at other stores, perishables has been found bloated, discolored, and/or expired. This happens at all stores but on numerous occasions, employees were seen restocking or fixing the area and failed to see the obvious. This has happened with online shopping too and resulted in reservations on the prepared food handling, such as whether go-backs are returned after being room temp awhile (hot/cold). Returns/exchanges are friendly but there can be a wait for service. This seems true for all stores. This is a busy store. It rarely feels crowded but it isn't uncommon to not have a shopping cart (get one from the parking lot if you can). The employees have numerous responsibilities, there won't be any waiting for a customer interaction. When checkout lines get severely backed up, they assign temporary cashiers but it takes time for the transition. The time to unlock products has been reasonable.

Xurke X.

Yelp
I asked for a cold cut of meat. Because of dietary/religious restrictions, I don't eat pork. I asked if the one I wanted had pork or not. The person behind the counter went to check. She came back and assured me it was pork-free so I bought it. After going home and consuming it, I noticed the packaging label indicated it had pork. I double-checked on the manufacturer's website (Boar's Head) and confirmed it had pork and no beef at all. I am appalled by this level of unprofessionalism. Do NOT go to this store.

Yelp
It is not acceptable to treat normal law abiding customers like inmates. I will never come into this trap of a store again. You can walk in the door just fine, but once you're in you can't get out without going through one of the FEW open checkout lanes. I was going to buy a sandwich using self checkout. It's been removed. For some reason I was told to take my one item and move from the express lane to a lane with 4 or 5 people with full carts. I decided not to tacitly support this kind of abberrant treatment by buying anything here, then walked all over the store to find the exit. The only way I could get out was to rudely squeeze past people in line checking out. I realize Safeway will justify this by saying how they're being robbed blind. This is not an acceptable solution to people in normal civil society. When criminals walk out without paying call the cops. When they refuse to do anything, go to the mayor and tell him you can't afford to run your business at a loss, and that you'll close the store and leave if they don't enforce the laws already on the books. Then do it and let all the virtue signalling morons that choose to live like this whine and complain. But it LOOKED like a nice grocery store, so there's that.
google avatar

Dave S.

Yelp
This Safeway has sale tags on items that aren't actually on sale. When I discovered I wasn't given the discounts Randy said the sale was over. I advised he should remove the sale signs if it's over. He claimed a mysterious woman was removing 'em, however this wasn't the case. The tags were yet present & there wasn't anyone removing 'em. I will call the district manager however I somehow doubt they'll care. Also, the online coupon deals may not register. This is the only store that I have to literally take shots of every discount within to actually eventually get the sale price. It's time consuming & a real annoyance. W/ Lucky, TJ's, Berkeley Bowl, even Whole Foods nearby there's no reason to shop in a depressing store that happens to be in a fancy neighborhood. I highly recommend avoiding this store.

Yelp
I appreciate that the Albertson's (parent of Safeway) "Business Manager" responded to my Yelp review of December 2022. I was invited to "feel free to reach out to us via chat or the 'contact' us page on our website with any floral products and flowers you were unable to find in stock so we can submit a request with our buyers for the floral department." Here's the deal. It is my "job" to shop at your store and pay for anything that I buy. It is your store personnels job to stock the merchandise that I want to buy. I presume that you know your business better than I do. If you have a floral department that sells a limited variety of flowers and colors and you only stock those flowers and colors to save on waste, then you will probably lose more customers and need even less variety. I'm not suggesting that you carry every type of flower in every color imaginable. I am suggesting that the Store Manager and the Floral Manager get together and talk about inventory variety and inventory control. If sales are such that it's not justified to carry more inventory, perhaps it's time to shutter the floral department for the store. If sales are such that items sell out on a regular basis, the build-to inventory probably needs to be adjusted up. Would it be acceptable for the Meat Department to run out of 80/20 Ground Beef or the Bakery to run out of Fresh Croissants? This morning at 11am, my wife found one color of lillies (magenta) and multiple bunches of roses. There were no daisies, chrysanthemums, tulips, or much of anything else. The next time this occurs, I will take a picture for my review. The Castro Valley store, which is our regular store has a much more robust selection every time we visit.

J P.

Yelp
Unlike most of the other Safeways near me, this one has a self-service Chinese food take-out area, and so far most of the items I have tried (beef broccoli, fried rice, sweet and sour chicken) taste pretty good. The cook (or someone who I assume to be the cook) even pops up sometimes to check up and stir the food and offers to answer questions when I look confused about a dish lol. Honestly a pretty good deal for the price, amount and quality. Obviously not as good as going to a proper Chinese spot, but better than the grocery outfit it's set in. Aside from that, this is your standard Safeway carrying your household necessities, along with normal items locked up behind plastic barriers (still a dumb move, Safeway/Albertsons) and it's open until midnight.

Joel J.

Yelp
This by far the worst Safeway in Oakland. The customer service at the register and in the deli is horrible. Cashiers close and open their lines when they want to and will tell you their line is closed only to take other customers right after they told you they were closed, then laugh about it to antagonize you and the other customers who were told the line was closed. It's really a shame that this store operates this way, because it's one of the bigger Safeway stores and they have a lot of good products. They really need to get better staff who truly understand what the words "Customer Service" mean. If I could give less than 1 star I would.

Yelp
Hi, everyone. I'm here to share my experience. I was in Oakland on June 22-23 for a gig. On June 23, around 1-2 p.m., my friends and I stopped to buy some liquor and snacks. At the register, I was with my partner, who is of legal age to buy alcohol. The cashier asked for ID, which she also asked me to show. I didn't comply because I wasn't purchasing anything. She quickly assumed I was underage, though I'll turn 21 in October 2024. She said there was a new law requiring me to show my ID, which confused and embarrassed both my partner and me. She should've sold the liquor to my partner since he is of age. I left the store upset and in tears. As I was leaving, an older white woman was rude to me. I saw two exits and asked politely which one to use. I understand this store is strict, but such a law doesn't exist in Sacramento or other places. There's also a camera, which made the situation even more frustrating as I felt the cashier was on a power trip. No wonder this store has a bad reputation. AnyBody Help Me Out By Sending A LInk Of This Law !!!!!

Joe J.

Yelp
Hi shoppers at the 5100 Broadway Safeway, Terry the cashier's 50th Anniversary working at that store is August 15, 2025.

Yelp
Tons of parking! Really clean! Well stocked! Service is attentive! Baked goods were fresh and fully stocked!

Ken O.

Yelp
Incompetent management. Super long checkout line. Unpriced produce. Huge store with no gnocchi. After 12 minutes in line I'm still 8th from the cashier. Good thing the ice cream wasn't on sale so there is none melting in my cart.

Yelp
This location makes me so sad/mad/frustrated. I love the other Safeway locations in Oakland but this location is a mess. I understand that they have been hit by crime and therefore have no handbaskets or carts but the staff is so rude. I just went in to shop with the basket I brought from the parking lot but it locked up and wouldn't drive so I asked a worker if he could unlock it and he said, "no, you have to go to the parking lot to get another one". So I did. It locked up again and this time he noticed me and said, "oh you can't bring them in the store". Can't bring the carts in the store...to shop? I asked if there were carts in store and he said no that they don't have any. All of the outdoor cart banks were completely full of carts. I decided to go to another location but all of the exits were closed and there are barred gates on each checkout not being used so you can't get through . I finally got it the exit and several customers were there and the doors wouldn't open. I went to ask a staff to help us get the exit doors open and he literally yelled at me, "I told you to go the other way". Never again.

Yelp
This place can be a burrrrden! The lines are hella long every time I go! Just know, patience is a critical! Don't go here is you're in a rush! Even the Starbucks inside has a crazy line! Mega selection! Which is why I come here! Dog friendly for small dogs. Carts are hard to find a lot of the time! Recommend come later in the evening! Nice parking and a lot of other shops and dinner/lunch spots!!!

Jen S.

Yelp
Open until Midnight close to me, which is both convenient & hella great since nothing else in my general hood is even close to open then!!! Once there the staff is always plentiful & uber nice & helpful. Plus there is almost always some amazing digital coupons which totally help with the overall trauma on the wallet part of grocery shopping in these current times. -Enjoy & Take Care Ya'll!

Kathleen S.

Yelp
I have purchased a number of Amazon gift cards at this Safeway in the past. unfortunately some have been fraudulent and had been used upon trying to use them. And others had all the numbers "whited" out when you peeled off the security grey tape. I have reported all of them to the Safeway fraudulent gift card department. I had been finally reimbursed for ones from May & June. but I now have $75 still not paid to me. these cards were purchased in March & May. Each time I call I am told that the repayment is "in accounting:". I have called many times and the last call was 8/24/24. I have written to store management & others to tell them that this is NOT acceptable. Do NOT buy Amazon gift cards at any Safeway location. They have a very serious problem which Safeway will not address.

Yelp
After a 14 month hiatus from in-store supermarket shopping, and now fully vaxxed, I decided to return here for an attempt at food shopping again! Yah! This was always my usual go-to supermarket, pre-pandemic, and went with a bit of trepidation in reading reviews. I decided if it didn't seem good I would walk away and go elsewhere... well, it went very well. Going on a weekday, 7am, helped with the exception that some aisles were still being stocked, and that was no surprise. The parking lot was empty! Some, but few vehicles. Only one entrance was open. The shopping experience was definitely different than pre-pandemic. More bare shelves and less items, but still enough to be relatively well stocked. I didn't have a problem finding what I needed, with minor exception. They seemed to be earnest in keeping Covid protocol, and were even washing (sanitizing?) the floor with a mechanical sweeper. I found nearly everyone respectful of politely distancing, staff and patrons alike. There is no directional signage for the aisles as I heard has been done in many stores. The store was fairly empty at first but by time I did my extensive shopping more customers arrived. Produce was good and I got a couple of good deals on meat, although some of the meat counters were looking a little barren. Check-out was fine. They only had one counter open, but soon opened another. I began bagging my own stuff, but someone quickly came over to assist. It was a large order! So, albeit a bit of an anxiety driven visit I must say that I never felt at risk or it not going well. WHEW! So glad to be gaining some normalcy back. Thank you Safeway!

Yelp
This is my go to Safeway in my neighborhood. Pros Roof top parking. Just make sure you park on the elevator working side. Buffet. Love the Asian and chicken wings buffet. Miss the containers that are reheatable in the microwave. Huge store with lots of spacing. Friendly workers. Good lighting and clean. Cons Hard to find any shopping baskets. I've resorted to putting my items in my own bag while shopping when I can't find a basket. Need to be on your guard as there have been car break-ins in the parking lot and recently a robbery in the store (someone ran out with a cart full of laundry detergent). I really like this store and will continue to shop here when I can. For the most part, it's safe and I can usually find what I'm looking for at a decent price.

Yelp
Literally the worst Safeway I've been to in the bay area. I live 2 blocks away and I'll drive to pak n save in Emeryville over this one. Never enough cashiers and they're always rude anyway. They also just got rid of the self checkout so you're really screwed.

Yelp
I have been shopping at this Safeway ever since it opened. Lately, I have had to complain frequently about the state of the bathroom. Today there was no toilet paper and finding someone to help was next to impossible.

Yelp
They need to bring back self service. Huge mistake to making your customers have to wait in long lines when they are buying a few items. The shopping vibe is abysmal.

Yelp
I avoid this store. I can't handle watching people steal as if they are entitled to. Bakery goods quality has gone way down, as has all the other Safeway made "fresh" foods. Milk is rarely stocked, items are often sold out, and lines to check out are often long and slow. I have not had a decent cut of meat in the last 3 years. ALWAYS out of hand wipes, and carts are difficult to find. This store allows the kids from nearby schools to hang out - with their backpacks. Obviously, the entitled thieves have figured out the Manager is a fool. I can't ands won't support any company or business who jacks up prices to enable thieves. I can't say what I really feel about that.

Yelp
This is my local Safeway and the only reason I go back is because of the pharmacy, which is usually quick and friendly. First of all, the store makes you feel like a criminal just by walking in. You need to go through all of these gates and bars just to get in. Then after that, you get the privilege of waiting in a line that wraps around the entire store at 5pm on a Monday for the one cashier or the self checkout with 2 or 3 registers out of order. After all of that you get home with your perscription and you find that the box of ice cream bars you bought were all melted inside of the wrappers. Makes you think about the quality of the rest of the frozen goods.

Yelp
Although sometimes a little sketchy, things have gotten better in the past few months. The blockaded entrances and exits seem to have cut back on thieves which I used to see all the time. The selection is great. The butcher department is always helpful. But this 5 star review is for Terry (working since 1975). Sometimes, the cashiers make me feel like I have somehow inconvenienced them. Terry is always a delight. She makes my day when I get the pleasure of picking her line. She is always kind and polite with everyone. I wish we could clone Terry a hundred times. The world would be a better place if we were all more like Terry.

Yelp
It is beyond disappointing to have to shop here for my weekly groceries. Unfortunately it is the closest safeway, besides the horrendous Pac'N Save which is even worse near my house. First disappointment is absolutely ZERO shopping carts! And they never even have hand baskets available. The lines for any register are always 10 people deep down an aisle. And all but ONE cashier has absolutely no customer service skills. Last week, they were literally cursing and yelling at one another. I had the pleasure of making a trip to the alameda location, and it was night and day. The staff there were so friendly and pleasant. Just wish it wasn't so far. But, I would be happy to make the drive if Broadway can't get descent necessities to run this store. I understand staffing is difficult in a situation like this, but there has got to be some good leadership to help the staff out. Clearly, they are unhappy working there. Something has got to change.

Yelp
I wish I could leave a negative review because that is what this location deserves. For well over a year hand baskets have not been available for customers. Now there is only 1 entrance to the store open with no carts or hand baskets in sight. The only reason I come by here once in a while is because it's the closest safeway to where I live. It's also the worst safeway I have ever been to in this life and all past lives. Their sourdough bread is good though.

Yelp
Sure needs to be visited by Supervision. Staff has a very poor attitude towards the customers. Staff were more interested in getting the store ready for Valentines Day than it cared about the current customers. I was told they could not locate a shopping cart for my 91 year old mother because it was not a customer service requirement. Get That! Not a requirement of the customer service! As this individual continued to converse with other women in the floral area as if I really didn't matter to her if I was there to shop or not, it seemed it was so much more important to her that the Valentines ballon's had a higher priority than me.The PIC who I previously requested brought me a shopping cart with a very snark closing. I was then able to join my wife and mother to continue their shopping within the store without any further complaint. Shame on this Corp. for disrespecting their customers when there are several other choices to the customers to do their shopping. It's not right!
