New Seattle Bill Gives Hazard Pay to Local Grocery Store Workers | Eater Seattle

"I note that Safeway stores are included as examples of businesses impacted by the ordinance and would have to implement the $4-per-hour hazard pay for eligible grocery employees while the civil emergency continues, with the requirement subject to potential modification after an initial four-month period." - Gabe Guarente

I have placed two orders for cupcakes with the location’s bakery, recently. My first experience was in person and a lovely lady greeted me asking if I had been helped. When I told her “not yet” and asked if I was able to place a cupcake order for tomorrow, she said “yes” and was quickly scolded by an older woman by the name of Patricia. Patricia said “you would need to ask me, not her, as I am the one that would make the cupcakes”. I proceeded to give Patricia my cupcake order and she was very brash, rude and short. She didn’t give me a total, didn’t ask if I would like to pay now, just told me to pick up tomorrow. I had to place another order over the phone a week later, and dealt with Patricia. Once again, she was very rude over the phone, asked me what time I would like to pick up, when I told her “12:00 or 1:00, doesn’t matter to me”, she said “well it does matter, let me check who is in front of you”. Then tells me a time to pick up tomorrow and proceeds to say “by the way, we need two days in advance for orders, see you tomorrow, bye”. Before she hung up I asked for a total and her name. Mind, you both my cupcake orders were standard cupcakes, nothing special, except for some football rings on top, that she told me they had in stock. I understand that last minute orders are annoying, but if you’d rather I take my business elsewhere, I am happy to. If you cannot make the cupcakes, I will not be offended if you say so. I will avoid this bakery at all costs if Patricia is working. She clearly has no desire to be professional in her customer service role. I appreciate the other women working in the bakery who are professional and have great customer service skills.

Employees are very friendly and helpful have never had a bad experience. The only thing is their produce is not good. Most of the time I visit there’s a noticeable smell when walking through the front doors. My boyfriend and I tried to purchase something from the produce section but they had some moldy vegetables. Kind of unfortunate because if I need to purchase any sort of produce that trip I just have to go to Walmart instead. Which sucks cause I like the selection of other items that they have better. Absolutely LOVE their deli soups. Only pre made potato soup that tastes homemade and their deli pastas are amazing!

I called the bakery and one of the bakers was SO nice. I’ve never ordered a cake before so I had no idea what I was doing so for her to be patient and explain things was super helpful. I asked her for a Hobbit Hole cake and she was so excited to do it that she was drawing out the plans before I called back to make the final order. That showed me how much dedication she puts into her work. When I called to make the order, she explained what she had in mind and I was all for it! For my babies first birthday, I couldn’t have asked for anything more! This cake was perfect and so well designed. I called other cake places and they said they told me I had to either pay over $50 for that or they couldn’t do that much decorating. But this baker? She sounded so genuine about making such a memorable cake for my family. Thank you so much! (I would put her name but I don’t know if she would want it on here.) I will be going to them from here on out for cakes!! :D

Great deli and they have sushi too. This plate of food costs $7.99 and it's always good Chinese food. Excellent produce and meat department also. Safeway can kind of be spendy but still a great store! I recommend getting your club membership card to save even more. Check out their deli for Chinese, sushi and or chicken and other great lunch/dinner options.

Google
I shop at Safeway on Sprague frequently and have never had an issue. The clerks are gregarious, they will take me directly to a product I can't find. Check out is a breeze. The quality of meat is impeccable. The pharmacy is great. The pharmacists always explain my prescriptions in a way I can understand. More stores should follow the example set by Safeway. Chris

Google
I am a lifetime Safeway person. Many of my family members have and still do work for Safeway in other areas. So my prospective is broad. Safeway is going downhill so fast. Why does everything always have to be so corporate?? I've ordered delivery and it is consistently low quality. Trying to deal with it through the app doesn't work and when I call the store telling them to refund items it doesn't happen. The shoppers obviously don't care about their job. Is that surprising when journeyman wages are only +$2 an hour above minimum wage? If course, their produce at this location is often low quality. Especially organic. The prices are ever-increasing and I'm tired of hearing about inflation!! If your suppliers don't bring costs down, don't buy from them. I'm just glad I'm back in Spokane where I have more access to local stores and farmers markets. Safeway is definitely off my list

Staff are always friendly. I go here once a month to stock up on some of our favorite dairy free items. Some of which I have searched downtown, South Hill, North and even Idaho for! Always clean inside, they do their best with the environment they have with the parking lot. I used my app and coupons and always leave with extra. Good store to go to.

Google
Went to the front end 3 separate times for help because I could not find an item I was looking for & it was not listed in an isle via the app. Not a single person would go back with me to find the item I wanted. Customer service is dead. The only employee that would help me was a sweet girl in the check out stand who couldn’t leave her area, she did her best to assist me but the Uscan lady was incredible rude, sighing loudly several times & not helpful at all.

Yelp
Bakery infested with flies- big flies. Went to get doughnuts for my coworkers and the fresh doughnut case has a bunch of huge flies inside it. Not like little fruit flies - huge full grown flies on the doughnuts.

Yelp
@Safeway I'm needed to talk to someone higher up, I'm having an issue with an self-checkout employee named on her badge is Cathrine who works at Safeway, I actually stopped shopping there 7 months ago because the employee wouldn't stop bringing her electric bill to work and telling other employees and customers that I was sending her that to her house, so I stopped shopping there because I felt they were harassing me, today I come in second time in 7 months for soda sale, and the same employee seen me and started telling everybody very loudly that I'm sending her porn to her, and I had other employees coming up to me asking me about this employees issue I have no idea where this crazy employee person problems are but I would like to be able shop there once in while without being harassed.

Yelp
Thought i would try out their "gourmet" sandwiches. Definitely not gourmet and this place is not the place to get a sandwich. And when i went to check out and get my cash from the coin-star the employee was rude and told me to go to customer service even though there was no one behind me and she could have done it herself. I go over to customer service and it took a while so the lady at the register came and got me to do it herself. It just took way longer than it should have. Icky behavior what happened to the loving Safeway i was raised on. Big ooof

Yelp
Normal Safeway, good selection of products, weekly ad has some good deals, self checkout is speedy as usual.

Yelp
Went to Safeway today to think of something for lunch and ended up in the deli.. thought, well I could have fried chicken and Jo jo's but that's when I saw the deal of the day! 9.98 for Chow Mein, Rice, Choice of two sides, and a couple spring rolls... so picked up some chow mein which was decent probably not my favorite got some steamed rice which wasn't the best it fell apart easy and some were still kinda crunchy and I chose orange chicken and general Tsao and honestly it was bad... I did get a belly full.. the spring roll was really good too! Not a bad choice, not sure if I'd go back right away but the price wasn't bad either..

Yelp
Very poor selection on a lot of things, mostly only the store brand and maybe one other name brand. Unless you have a Safeway Club card most things are priced too high, and even many of the club deals seem expensive. Store layout is kind of haphazard in my opinion, and it seems like I have to criss cross back and forth in the store the times I do go here. Most employees pretty friendly, but not all have good knowledge of the store. Between the prices, lack of selection, and crazy store layout, I think you would be better served going to other grocers unless you are close by and in a hurry.

Yelp
I moved into the neighborhood thinking it would be nice to have a grocery store this close. After a year I am no longer going to shop here. Higher prices, cluttered aisles, the app has sales on items that are hard to find in store or they are out of stock on. I went to rent a rug doctor and was told Guest Services is closed so they won't rent me one. I watched them close it while I was in line with the shampoo and my dinner (rotisserie chicken - why do I feel like I 'won' something if they happen to have one in stock?) So I asked to talked to the manager who told me it closed 7 minutes ago and he would not rent me the machine (which is the main reason I was in the store). It's likely I will live in the neighborhood for maybe 10-30 years, possibly longer - but they have lost my business to Yokes, Grocery Outlet, and Rosauers - each provide better customer service, better prices, and the deli and bakery are better at Yokes and Rosauers as well. I will give up convenience for customer service, less attitude, and better prices. You don't have to go far to avoid this experience, but I advise you to do so.

Yelp
Terrible customer service. Cashiers don't pay attention to you when you check out, they have an attitude when you ask questions. They seem to get annoyed when there is more than one person in their line. Not helpful and not kind. Don't be in a customer service industry if you don't like helping people.

Yelp
I choose to go little further to shop at Safeway, the staff are friendly they always help a person when you need it, this store is always clean, the owners are always upgrading the inside and outside. This location has the best bakery and Coffee shop inside which is the best drinking coffee while shopping lol

Yelp
I'm just going to say it - I go to Safeway because it is the closest grocery store to my house, and I can't eat out every night. I think Safeway is a bit overpriced, but they do have a couple of areas where they shine: the service deli and their overall customer service. The service deli has improved a bunch for me because I like their freshly made sandwiches. For breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you can get various meats and cheeses on flatbread or focaccia, and they are pretty good. The employees at Safeway are usually helpful and positive, which I appreciate after navigating grouchy public servants for much of my adult life. I think Albertson's is cheaper and Yoke's has more options, but Safeway is closer and the service has been good, so I will continue going there.

Yelp
I don't know what happened to this store, but it used to be so much better service wise. I frequent the deli for a quick lunch and over the past few months it's gotten SO SLOW! I've actually timed it to where I'm standing at the deli counter for almost 5min before I'm even ACKNOWLEDGED, let along rung up. This particular instance there were employees working behind the counter, but not actually helping anyone else and no one else was in line. Is there a staffing crisis or are they just training new people not to actually work? Don't want to get rung up at the deli? It's not going to be much better it you go to the actual check stands. Two lanes open with long lines of people at each.

Yelp
So safeway apparently doesn't bag groceries anymore, but didn't lower their prices or tell the public? Today my check in Spokane valley "Cyndra" threw all my groceries to the end of the counter with them landing on top of each other and rolling over the eggs repeatedly as fast as she could while I was checking out. Then she stocked to the end of the counter and started throwing them into my bags in no particular order. I asked her if Safeway no longer bagged groceries anymore and she said "well I'm just used to people bagging their own". I have no problem bagging my own at self check out, but if I'm going to buy several bags worth of groceries, at the regular check out, you better tell me ahead of time and also go slower. No chance I could have kept up with her to keep my groceries safe. If you want to be a winco lower your prices. Also, this was one of the rudest checkers I've ever encountered. I will be going to any place else now. Yokes, Fred Meyer even Walmart has better service. I'll be advertising your lack of bagging assistance as well, since you can't do it yourself.

Yelp
I do like shopping at Safeway, but the one thing that disgust me is the products from Signature!! The meat alone is Horrible!! It looks like it's already gone bad, it smells horrible and the taste is horrible. They Really need to get rid of All the Signature brand. My bacon was half rotten when I got up this next morning. It didn't taste good, don't looked worse than the day before. Don't buy any Signature food products. Yuck

Yelp
This location has the best deli! The staff makes huge sandwiches. Always friendly staff and very clean.

Yelp
Used to shop here often. Produce and dairy poorly stocked. They pack grocery bags so full that they're torn by the time you get to your car. Last 4 times I've shopped, selection was poor and the bagger packed fruit sideways, so I had a sticky mess everywhere. Not shopping there again.

Yelp
I don't frequent Safeway that often because there are other grocery stores closer to where I live. However, this time I went in to do a little light shopping for breakfast and sandwich ingredients. I walked the whole store maybe 4 or 5 times trying to find everything because a lot of thing were miss labeled. The two things that gave me the most difficult was the bacon and sandwich meat. You'd think the sandwich meat would be next to the cheese like every other grocery store, but no. The sandwich meat was on the other side of the store close to the produce. There is also three locations for the bacon. 1) there is large bulk bacon next the eggs 2) there's more bulk bacon in one of the island refrigerator things 3) then there's smaller packages of bacon next to the sandwich meat by the produce, the kind of bacon I want because I don't need 4lbs of bacon at a time. The store is confusing and there is a disorganization problem that needs to be addressed. I've attached a photo showing that the meat section does not contain meat, but instead juice.

Jeri W.

Yelp
Note to self. Never shop here again. Worst service ever. Why pay regular grocery store prices and then have to schlep your own groceries into the cart and to the car. Back to Rosauers!!

Yelp
Prices can be high. When they have specials, they can be really good. Why not have more cashiers if you don't want to have self-checkout? Usually only one cashier with a line of customers waiting. I would prefer self-checkout instead of waiting in line while the cashier stops to talk with the customers -- holding up the line.

R S.

Yelp
I've only stopped here to pick-up snacks for meetings but all staff have been super helpful both times. Thank you!

Kyler F.

Yelp
Message machine says they're open till 1. Tried to go in a little after 12. Both the doors were locked. Guess I'm not getting drunk tonight. Jerk offs.
