The Best Indian Food in Philadelphia | Eater Philly

"On N. Broad near Temple’s campus, Saffron Indian Cuisine (not to be confused with Saffron Indian Kitchen) offers up biryani, roti, and tandoor-cooked dishes from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Order the salt lassi on the side." - Ernest Owens

Darry was our server and was so nice and accommodating. The food was amazing- so fragrant and flavorful! We got the chicken biryani, lamb roganjosh, and tandoori chicken tikka. The lamb was a bit on the tough side but the sauce was very warm and delicious. The chicken was amazingly tender for both dishes. Our favorite was the tandoori chicken tikka! We had enough to share between two people and still take home leftovers.

We had a good experience at Saffron Indian Restaurant in Freehold! We tried Samosa chaat , pannier pakora , malai kofta , naan & mango lassi . All items were authentic flavors and tasty . The service was prompt, and the staff were warm, attentive, and genuinely friendly. Prices were reasonable for the quality and portion size. recommend this spot if you’re craving flavorful Indian cuisine with a welcoming atmosphere!

We had a wonderful dining experience at Saffron Indian Cuisine! We were greeted with a warm and inviting atmosphere, complete with beautiful décor and soothing music that set the perfect mood for the evening. The menu offered a wide variety of traditional Indian dishes, and each item we tried was filled with authentic flavors and expertly balanced spices. The appetizers were a great start—crispy gobhi and flavorful pakoras that were perfectly cooked. For the main course, the mutton curry was incredibly rich and tender. The garlic naan and tandoori roti were soft and fresh. We also enjoyed the fragrant basmati rice and a refreshing mango lassi. The staff was exceptionally friendly and attentive, always ready to offer recommendations and ensure we had everything we needed. The service was prompt, and **Wasim** made us feel truly valued as guests. Overall, Saffron Indian Cuisine exceeded our expectations in every way.

Google
The staff were very friendly. They helped me lower the window shade. I love the interior. Food was delicious. I ordered the Samosa Chaat and Lamb Tikka Masala. Next time I’ll try asking for higher spicy level (I got a medium spicy level).

Google
Saffron Indian Cuisine offers a delightful culinary experience that transports you straight to the heart of India. On my recent visit, I had the pleasure of trying the Chicken Masala and Garlic Naan, and both dishes exceeded my expectations. The Chicken Masala was rich and flavorful, with a perfect balance of spices that brought out the tender chicken's natural taste. The sauce was creamy and well-seasoned, making it a perfect match for the naan. Speaking of the naan, the Garlic Naan was simply heavenly—soft, warm, and infused with just the right amount of garlic, it complemented the chicken perfectly. The ambiance of the restaurant is inviting, with a warm and friendly atmosphere that enhances the dining experience. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu, providing excellent service throughout the meal. Overall, Saffron Indian Cuisine is a must-visit for anyone looking to enjoy authentic Indian flavors in a welcoming setting. I can’t wait to return and explore more of their menu!

Google
This was my first time at Saffron. The service was exceptional. The food was absolutely incredible. The staff was so accommodating. The chef came out and stopped at every table to chat briefly. I definitely recommend this restaurant. I love Indian food and Saffron went above and beyond. Absolutely delicious!!

Google
Darrell at Saffron Indian Cuisine does a great job at proving amazing service. He is friendly, attentive, and just makes you feel welcome. The food is already amazing, but his service takes it to the next level. We’ve already come back twice because of how great he made the experience. Highly recommend asking for Darrell when you go!

Google
Everything about this place is amazing. The food, the atmosphere, and the people that make it all happen make this place an absolute go-to. Darry in particular made it a very special evening.

Yelp
FREEHOLD: Saffron Indian Restaurant is a new addition to downtown Freehold and it is absolutely delicious! Leashed and friendly dogs are allowed at the outdoor seating with views of the historic Monmouth County Hall of Records and Main Street. The flavorful spices and variety of options at Saffron are sure to please everyone. We enjoyed their lunch buffet and one of us went in at a time so Brie could stay outside. You can also order off their main menu filled with meat and vegetarian options. The rich curries are seriously so good and they also have tandoori, kabab, biryani, and more! BYOB and enjoy a special treat and make a memory with your pup!

Yelp
This is a 3.4 star review. Close to a round up to a 4 star but just a few issues. The good: great location in downtown freehold. BYOB. Nice atmosphere. Apps were fantastic! Lamb chops (despite being over priced were great! 4 for $28 is a bit steep. But the flavor was fabulous). The onion Bhaji was also great. The naan was also fantastic. Cons: wait staff was a bit slow despite it being quite a small crowd. The main dish I had was fine, frankly it lacked a lot of flavor (Lamb tikka masala). And it was a bit bland. 50/50 on returning

Yelp
This is NOT a dine-in review, but takeout/delivery. I ended up ordering chicken biryani, garlic naan, and a mango lassi. Nothing crazy. The chicken biryani was really good. I always appreciate the yogurt that comes along with it because sometimes you get a spicy bite. The yogurt helps to cut down the heat. The naan was good. Who can go wrong with naan? Now, the mango lassi. I love me some mango lassi! This one especially! Sooo super thick I couldn't even use a straw! The mango taste really came through! Love the freshness! I'll definitely have to make a stop here and actually eat here!

Yelp
Yet another Indian fine dining restaurant opens in downtown Freehold. Food is very good but wait staff is too timid to spice the dishes as requested. Therefore the Indian heat is missing and this degrades from the overall flavor and enjoyment . The service was fine other than the comment listed above. And, the ambience is very nice with white table cloths used throughout. I do recommend this place but if you like the heat keep my comments in mind.

Yelp
Feasting at an exotic lunch buffet with a variety of appetizers like samosas, spring rolls, chilli chicken, and chicken tikka. The spread continues with corn spinach, chicken tikka masala, paneer masala, and veg biryani, finishing off with warm gulab jamun! All for just $14.99 per person. Highly recommended and located in the heart of historic Freehold, NJ. The staff is very nice and checks on you regularly. It's located at the very good spot by the main st in freehold. Inside is very calm and very neat ambience. Everything was delicious making it very well worth the money.

Yelp
The underdog vs Goliath... Saffron took over where the old Cuban restaurant was and most of the decor is the same. Beautiful lush green booths with a modern twist. Draped curtains nice and has a nice vibe. So- how was the food right?? Authentic! Delectable! Hot both in temperature and just enough spice! My family isn't too keen on curry but between the butter chicken and the Tikka Chicken Masala the flavors were just what I was expecting from the authentic Indian cuisine. The Naan and basmati rice were perfect and the Lamb Bryani was good too! The Chef came out to greet us our waiters were fantastic! Really sweet, attentive, and interactive without being overbearing. Considering they're up against a pillar of Indian cuisine on the same block, I truly believe patrons will be happily satisfied with Saffron! Give it a try and let everyone know how you like it.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. Great ambiance. They added a special menu with huge portions at reasonable prices.

Yelp
An overall good meal with excellent, and I mean excellent customer service and staff members. I enjoyed the Chana saag, and eggplant Burta I had here tonight. They serve a tasty chickpea flour cracker with some sauces for free with your meals, which I also found enjoyable. I was really impressed by the quality of the staff members. I asked for something to be made that was not on the menu and they were kind enough to accommodate and the dish came out good as well. Definitely would come back and suggest to others to try out

Yelp
The food here was very good, I enjoyed my experience here. The food was very authentic and seasoned great. The atmosphere was amazing. This place is only missing a start because there was no outside seating and it would have been great to eat and experience everything that was happening outside.

Yelp
The best addition to downtown Freehold in many years. Saffron offers fine Indian cuisine in an atmosphere that's elegantly-decorated, featuring luxurious linens and a grand setting. More importantly than that, the food is fresh, flavorful, and provides a generous portion to meat-eaters and vegetarian patrons alike. I've already come back and had the Madras Chicken, described as black pepper chicken, twice. Meanwhile the Tandoori Chicken appetizer blew me away with its sizzling presentation fresh out of the clay oven. I will be coming back and trying a whole chicken tandoori as an entree one night. The naan is baked to a golden-brown perfection, served hot, and seasoned well with options including chili, garlic, and cilantro. Asking for extra spicy on the Madras Chicken, which they obliged, I rated the spice level a 7/10 despite it being quite spicy. However, I then realized that a more moderate spice level allows the flavors of the cuisine to shine through better so I may hold back on my spice level requests going forward depending on the dish despite my potentially-egotistical love for extreme spice. Did I mention that they serve complimentary papadam to patrons? It comes with two sauces, and I've come to really enjoy the fresh green sauce which is typically seasoned with peppermint. Beyond that, the service is spectacular and matches the fine-dining ambiance. Everybody is so incredibly friendly, and the entire staff from the servers to the manager to the owner comes out and checks on the meal throughout. They can accommodate nearly any request, and my water jug was instantly replenished. Value is also high, and Saffron is BYOB. Speaking of friendly, they spoke highly of their competitor Aarzu down the street, which is Indian/American fusion. I prefer the authentic Indian cuisine at Saffron. Royal Ganesha at the mall is also good, especially for being at a mall location, but Saffron has the distinction of being significantly more elegant. Just like that, Saffron is now the best Indian restaurant in the Freehold area and a fantastic option for fine Indian dining.

Yelp
I ordered takeout from here recently and was impressed. I order bindi masala, lamb Rogan Josh, naan, Raita and samosas. The flavors were all excellent and The lamb was tender. The only thing I would improve upon is the spice level in the bindi masala. I thought it was too mild, but still delicious. I'll be back.

Yelp
Great buffet and amazing table service. We went for a birthday lunch and were not disappointed. The food was fresh, the chef came to visit our table, allergies were taken seriously, and the decor was fun and inviting

Yelp
my fiancé and I were seated and the waiter was friendly, we ordered the butter chicken, garlic naan, and veg samosas. The waiter was nice but they might be new in the food service industry as we weren't offered refills and waited a while to order and to get the bill. The butter chicken was good 7/10 my fiancé believed it needed a little more flavor garlic naan was my absolute favorite as it had garlic pieces and it was flavorful and my fiancé enjoyed it as well. 10/10 the samosas were big and they were delicious, it has a spicy kick to it but nothing too bad 7/10 The menu mentions that it holds coke products but when asked the waiter told us they hold Pepsi products. The drink came out and tasted like Pepsi but on the bill it also was put in as a coke... very confusing. I do wish the best for this restaurant , and it's significantly affordable compared to Aarzu, this is a new gem at Freehold. now for my fiancés review: Food was great. It was a nice atmosphere as well. Service was a bit awkward at times but overall good. Surprisingly empty. Chef didn't ask us how the food was

Yelp
Saffron just recently opened and the first time we visited was during its soft opening. From our first visit we have been impressed with the quality of food. The menu is extensive and very authentic. The food was delicious! I had the chicken Tikki masala during my first visit and I loved it. My second visit I had a fish on their menu and it was so good! I also had an eggplant dish that's become my favorite. The staff has been very friendly and the owner visited our table each time we visited. I've recommended this place to several people and they have been very happy with their food! I highly recommend this place!!

Yelp
What an amazing Saturday afternoon Buffet!!! The best in the area!! The service was great. We will be back, along with our friends.

Yelp
I was hoping to finally find a good Indian restaurant in this area and judging by the stellar reviews, I was wishful. Saffron missed the mark by far - certainly did not cater to Indian tastebuds. We placed an order via Uber Eats and was calling the restaurant for about 30 mins to request that they make the paneer tikka masala spicy. When they finally called us back, he said no problem we'll make it spicy! Our next question was when was the order going to be ready? He's like it's ready! ...how are you making it spicy if it's ready? Needless to say, the order was no spice to it. Fine, but what really ruined it was the excessive amount of salt in the dish. I'm typically not one to be picky with salt levels but it was so bad that we could not enjoy it and ended up throwing it out. The naan was subpar as well. The dahi papdi chaat was good, but it's also quite difficult to mess up a papdi chaat, lol. Overall, my experience here would not lead me back. From the poor customer service to the unacceptable food - I could not be bothered to come back.

Yelp
On a Friday evening, they weren't that busy, but we had made reservations just in case. We were seated in the middle of the restaurant, which if anyone knows, isn't as comfortable as the booths or tables along the sides of the restaurant. We started off with the dahi bhalla, which was okay, but I don't recommend. It was little bland and served cold, which wasn't written in the menu's description. Our four entrees were the gobi aloo mutter, a cauliflower and potato dish that everyone enjoyed. Our second was the yellow dal tadka, which was more of a curry. I wished it had larger ingredients in it so it could have been eaten more as an entree rather than a supplement to rice, again, lacking in the description. The tikka masala was pretty standard, and the korma with shrimp was pretty good. All the entrees came with rice but we ordered roti and naan on the side. The roti was a bit thicker than we expected, just slightly thinner than the naan. Our table was a bit too small to fit four people and four entrees on it. The food was pretty good, service was very lacking. I would order takeout next time!

Yelp
Very authentic Indian food. I liked how they asked you what level of spice you want. Would definitely goo back

Yelp
Great meal last night at Saffron. 4 for dinner, all different choices , everything terrific . Tikka masala, tandoori salmon , chicken jahlfrezi , garlic nan , 2 appetizers , onions with pomegranate seeds. Delicious. Highly recommended . Service terrific

Mike M.

Yelp
The restaurant has a nice decor, the servers are very nice, the owner came around to check on us..... all great except I'm not a fan of Indian food so I can really review the food. It's just not my thing and I only went as all my family wanted to go. So based on that, I'll give it 5 stars. I'm sorry to say but I didn't like any of the food.
google avatar

Brad A.

Yelp
Went for the buffet. It's worth every penny. $25 pp for unlimited food and naan. Just a heads-up, parking is a nightmare in downtown freehold. They have some random 2 hr free parking areas and I think noon to 4 is free too.
google avatar

Aditi R.

Yelp
Loved the interior design of the place and bathrooms are clean. Service was great. Staff was very attentive. Chef was kind and went around tables making sure we all enjoyed the food. First time having a tandoori pomfret and it is a must try! The entrees were great and adhered to the desired spice levels. Garlic naan was always hot and airy I could eat a whole basket just by myself! Desserts and mango lassi were good as well. Will definitely be coming back when I crave some good Indian food! This place is perfect for family dinners, date, birthday, etc!

Joseph F.

Yelp
Was looking forward to trying this restaurant, based on the extremely positive reviews. Did take out. Ordered Butter Chicken and buttered naan. The chicken was decent, but the gravy was on the watery side. My experience has been that the gravy on such a dish is typically thicker in consistency. Naan was good. Portions on the smaller side, however, the prices were not.

Yelp
Really really delicious food. Great buffet as well. Food was fresh and flavorful. Service was great. Would definitely come back here.

Liliana H.

Yelp
The food was amazing and the service was wonderful! Definitely recommend!! This was our first time eating here and we can't say enough about how good the food at Saffron is!

Julie T.

Yelp
Takeout is always a 10/10. All items were super flavorful and delicious! (So good the pup wanted some too :)
google avatar

Amanda F.

Yelp
the food was amazing, the service was great! the portions are very generous without a huge price tag. will definitely come again!

N T.

Yelp
Food was good except for the buffet , dishes empty, food was not cold , had to be microwaved , variety not as good as other local places And now the parking in the back makes it more inconvenient where you pay for parking and used to be free, not Reateraunt fault

Yelp
This was first time having Indian food in over 30 years. I was taking my son out for his birthday. My son judges a restaurant by how crowded it is. There were only about 4 tables filled. BUT...restaurant was in a very busy downtown area with tons of restaurants, also it is fairly new. I judge a restaurant by food and service, both of which were outstanding. The only thing I didn't care for were the vegetable samosas, which are pastry filled with vegetables and potatoes. The pastry was very hard and since I do not have bottom teeth, it hurt my gums. We described to the owner what we were looking for and he had a nice sampler dish made up. The meats were tender and flavorful, and we ended up sharing the same dish. My son remarked on the reasonable cost. As I was walking to the restaurant, I could smell the most appealing aroma. A couple of people told me it was from Saffron. They had been there before and only had good things to say about it. Overall, I was very pleased with my choice of restaurants. After dinner we sat out near a small bandstand which was playing live music in the middle of town. A nice low key vibe.

Jay B.

Yelp
We have been a patron of Saffron from when they opened. We are very picky about our Indian cuisine (although we are not Indian by descent) - we just very much enjoy authentic Indian food and Saffron checks all of the boxes. We have eaten a variety of their appetizers and entrees - both vegan and non vegan. Our favorite entrees are Chicken Tikka Masala, Chana Masala, and Chana Saag. We enjoy the nice touch of complimentary papadoms and dipping sauces. The service is impeccable, attentive, and non overwhelming - they will give you ordering advice if you are not familiar with Indian cuisine. They will also vary the degree of spice upon your request - in fact when ordering, they will even ask you what spice level you prefer. Their Naan breads are fresh baked and fluffy. Their rice is always tasty. Their desserts are always sweet and satisfying. The atmosphere is casual, quiet, and classy. We also have tried their mango lassy which was yummy. When we have a craving and do not have the time to sit, we will order take-out which we have done numerous times and it has been a great experience. Note to the owner/chef - I am the guy who likes to sit by the window with his daughter.

Diane C.

Yelp
Wonderful dinner and service tonight. Second time here, ate all different entrees, and all were delicious again. Also able to get content info for dietary needs. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Saffron is AMAZING!!! Every dish at Saffron tastes homemade with a perfect balance of flavor and spice. I enjoy eating / ordering here at least once a week, and have tried many things on the menu. The staff are extremely hospitable, kind, and accommodating.

Lisa C.

Yelp
Delicious from start to finish! Excellent fresh food! Lots of vegetarian options! Large portions & fun to share. Service was excellent & decor/vibe fresh & inviting! Will be back!!

Yelp
This place had only been open about a month when we tried it. My wife's family has lived in Freehold for decades and have never had a dining experience as good as this. The service was excellent (in fact, a couple of times we got asked if we needed anything, and then asked again by a different server a few minutes later!), the food was delicious and promptly served, and the décor and atmosphere were comfortable, relaxed and very classy. (The squalling small child at a family table nearby was not the fault of the restaurant, and was the only bad thing about the experience.) Highly recommended for lunch or dinner if you love Indian cuisine. A great addition to the revitalized downtown area. Be sure to try the butter chicken and tandoori chicken!

Shana R.

Yelp
Good and service were both excellent! Great variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

Michelle D.

Yelp
We were part of a large group, which can be challenging, but the staff was attentive and friendly--really prioritizing a positive experience for us all. Every bite--from appetizers to entrees to desserts--was delicious. We will certainly make this beautiful restaurant part of our regular rotation.

Luis L.

Yelp
This new restaurant is quite a gem. We were here for lunch and the buffet was amazing and with great choices. The sauces were finger licking good. Excellent ambiance and very friendly service. We need this restaurant in Freehold. I have missed the last Indian restaurant that offered lunch buffet. I am excited to have one again. Thanks Saffron and welcome to Freehold!

Rich M.

Yelp
Excellent food and choices , very attentive service , nice atmosphere & fair prices for meals and drinks

Shadi A.

Yelp
Amazing food and service at the Saffron! Such a good location and atmosphere- the staff really went above and beyond. We came for lunch and ordered two apps and one entree, all exceeding expectations. We got the Ragda Patties, Lamp Chops, and Chicken Tikka Masala (and a side of Garlic Naan!). We loved the the Ragda Patties, a mix of amazing flavors. And the lamp chops were incredible, was so tender and spice PACKED! And of course, you can never go wrong with a side of Garlic Naan. We left with happy stomachs and definitely will be back soon!

Jeff S.

Yelp
Food was delicious, and the service was attentive and knowledgeable. They made several suggestions about dishes that would suit my taste, and they were spot on.

Eric B.

Yelp
First, I must say the service was exceptional. Very nice hostess. But, sadly the food was somewhat disappointing. Our dishes were lacking in both taste and serving temperature. The samosas arrived cold, saag was too salty and tasted like it had way too much butter. Curries were also weak in spice and flavor. There was basically no depth to any of the dishes we tried. Maybe the chef needs to actually taste the food to understand what's missing here.

Sanjukta B.

Yelp
Great food and service. Best Indian food I have had in New Jersey. Tandoori Pomfret was fresh and tasty. Loved the Bhuna Goat... and it is actually goat not lamb! The Kashmiri Nun was outstanding. I would love to go back and try other foods there.

Nicholas M.

Yelp
Ordered 3 meals for takeaway. All were delicious. My daughter said the food was as excellent as the great Indian restaurants she enjoyed in Queens, NYC. Upon picking up the food I saw how beautifully the place has been transformed and the wonderful music playing. Looking forward to sitting down to wonderful meals in the future.

Raisa S.

Yelp
Outstanding , delicious food. Appetizing food presentation. The food was not heavy with oil, which I liked a lot. Very friendly service. Over all: Excellent!
google avatar

Nedda A.

Yelp
Delicious food, beautiful ambiance, excellent service! Right in the heart of Freehold. Will definitely return!

Tanya W.

Yelp
We went for lunch and they had a Buffet. Everything was wonderful. We also met the owner who is a super nice guy and he just wanted to make sure that everything was good. The service is top notch, their tea is amazing as well. It's over an hour away for us, but worth the trip and planning to go back next weekend.

Pete P.

Yelp
OK here is the real deal, the decor and ambiance is above average and inviting. Perfect for date night, girls night or family time. The portions are generous and the naan is amazing. Word to the wise, be careful on spice level. To most medium is spicer than norm but the flavor is always present. The restaurant is a BYOB which is a plus and has a buffet lunch during the week perfect for a quick lunch. Definitely try it out before it becomes over crowded.

Lauren B.

Yelp
Very very good! Food was amazing, place is beautiful, staff is attentive and friendly. We can't wait to go back!

Nagema K.

Yelp
We had a birthday party at Safron and we had a great experience. The staff was very attentive and helpful, the food was great and the decor, ambiance was very nice. Will definitely go back!
