The 29 Best Restaurants in Salt Lake City, Utah | Eater

"Saffron Valley founder Lavanya Mahate grew up in southern India and later attended school in the western part of the country, where she developed a love of street food. She moved to the U.S. in 2001 and began selling her proprietary spice blends at SLC’s Downtown Farmers Market. She went on to open her first restaurant, Saffron Valley Indian Street Food Cafe, and now has multiple locations, including in the Avenues and Sugarhouse neighborhoods. The mini-chain prides itself on the largest Indian buffet in Salt Lake, with a menu that features dishes such as deconstructed samosas (mashed potatoes, sweet peas, roasted cumin, and ginger), bone-in goat curry (with mustard, fenugreek, curry leaves, and sambhar spice), and gulab jamun soaked in aromatic syrup. Know before you go: Mahate works with the Utah Refugee Training and Education Center to provide free culinary training to refugees and disadvantaged youth." - Sarah Entwistle

Google
I've been wanting to try Saffron Valley for a while. Finally ordered their Saag Paneer, and loved it. Will definitely be back for more. So nice to have gluten-free options clearly marked!

Google
Best indian food in the entire city. We have really had good food in last 5 days. The services are super fast and staff is extremely generous and good. We had chicken chettinad, chicken 65, ras malai and mango lassi… (must try). ♥️♥️ Ambience is really comfortable and in accessible location.

Google
Been to the Sugarhouse location a lot of times for lunch buffet and first time in this location for an a la carte dinner and yep, it never disappoints. If any, maybe even better due to it's spacious dining area. Nevertheless, the food, the presentation, ambience and the service is as exceptional 😋👌 Will sure come back for their lunch buffet, soon!

Google
Amazing food and service. Very kind and respectful open floor plan is super nice but when they’re busy it’s kinda loud. Definitely recommend especially if you want to try genuine Indian cuisine.

Google
Better than my LA fav. Amazing flavors, dishes were incredible. Vegan options spot on. Not too oily.

Google
We had our rehearsal dinner for our wedding in Saffron Valley's event space. It was a PERFECT venue! The space was cozy but plenty spacious for our ~65 guests, and we had no problem hearing speeches anywhere in the room. Not only was the space great, but of course the food was delicious! We love eating at Saffron Valley regularly, and the catered food for our event was no exception. Maheesh was also incredible throughout the night. He was attentive, and he was on top of things with all of our requests.

Google
My husband and I recently relocated to Downtown Salt Lake City, and the first thing we looked for was good Indian food. We found it! The staff is incredibly lovely, and they have a very detailed menu. They were super helpful in answering all our questions. The price point is perfect, and the portions are huge—we definitely had leftovers for dinner. Highly recommend!

Google
This is not the right place for Non-Veg options I tried Goat, Lamb, & chicken multiple varieties, every time I tried I feel dissatisfied with the quality of meat. Always this restaurant use to have meat which is not fresh (hard pieces, dry-aged) for both lamb & goat. Even if you share feedback they would recommend not to order / take order this item again in their restaurant irrespective to change the quality and maintain best quality meat. I would recommend not to try Meat in this restaurant if you face such issue please do share your opinion at least that should change the quality. Neither Dine-in nor ToGo everything the same.

Yelp
The food was some of my favorite Indian food I've had, and I've had a lot. The ambiance was incredible, such a beautiful interior and exterior and the service was great. I hope this place gets more business, it deserves the love.

Michael G.

Yelp
Always great! Food is always on point. Clean bathrooms, prompt service. I would recommend the cilantro chicken, with naan, mango lassi. Eat with your hands, it's ok

Yelp
This review is for the buffet. First time properly learning how to eat pani puri. I grabbed the puris w/o realizing I was supposed to add the fillings, lol. I tried almost everything at the buffet. Overall, the food was mediocre. Some of the proteins were a bit tough and it's probably from sitting out too long. But, I really enjoyed the passionfruit drink. It was super refreshing. Staff was attentive and cleared plates as we finished. Might come back to try their dine-in mains for a different experience.

Yelp
Anytime I'm in the area, I stop in for their lunch buffet. I did come towards the end of the hour before they stop putting fresh stuff out, however some of the dishes were a little cold. Naan was freshly warm though! Still a wonderful place to dine if you come earlier for their lunch buffet as lots of options to choose from.

Yelp
Phenomena food! We need to go back to try the curries, but we were feeling something different, so we got a variety of small plates and kabobs. My favorites were chicken 65 and chicken tikka (this one in particular was so good!). We also got and liked the Chicken Pakoras, Hariyali Chicken, Chicken Malai, and Saffron Paneer (not my favorite, but still good- it came in the sampler). Service was great. Everyone was friendly, even when we walked right past the wait to be seated sign and up to the counter, looking like we wanted to order to go ‍ The place is quiet and friendly, good location. We will be back soon.

Yelp
I visited this restaurant twice in one week because I needed some soft food after getting mouth surgery. Their food was perfect for the situation, but definitely on the mild side. Service was slow, but I was in no rush. It's in a great spot down town and would be good for mild palates.

Yelp
The best place for Indian food in Salt Lake City!!! Staff is so kind and efficient and the food is to die for!!

Yelp
Saffron Valley was the first restaurant in the Greater Salt Lake area to bring Indian street food, snack items and dishes from Southern India at the original location in South Jordan more than 10 years ago. They've since expanded but kept the same quality and variety on their menu. My go-to for take out is the mixed grilled with paneer and samosa, but every item on the menu is excellent. The staff at Saffron are always a stand out for me too. Eye contact, a smile and that lovely hospitality the sub-continent is known for, every time.
google avatar

Yelp
The best Indian lunch special in Salt Lake City. The Delhi chaat is a good appetizer as is the samosa chaat. These two items are not offered at most other Indian restaurants so I highly recommend trying them. The mint chutney is perfect accompanying all the other dishes. The tandoori chicken is flavorful, tender, and juicy. The naan is good. The tikka masala is light but flavorful. A good option for a lunch special. Decent service when dining in.

Yelp
Writing in response to the Business Manager (Lanny)'s response that I asked for a discount which they did not honor. This lie is as white as it can get. I have lived in the US long enough to know that you don't ask for a discount at a restaurant. It never works. To the business manager - If a customer provides some feedback, I would embrace it instead of spreading lies, and ensure it is not repeated. Also, I would ensure no one in my friend circle (trust me I have a large circle) eats at your restaurant. All the best!

Yelp
We've eaten here a couple times and the curries are, unfortunately, so thin and watered down with very little flavor.

Tatum O.

Yelp
The building is beautiful. The staff is very attentive and helpful and kind. The food is nothing short of divine! I'm usually hesitant to try a buffet, but my sister had been here before and convinced me their lunch buffet was worth it! She was not wrong. It was great to be able to try more than my usual basic order. Everything is fresh and perfectly balanced with flavor. We had 4 moms and 5 small kids and they so generously let kids under 3 eat free. 4/5 kids were big fans too and that says a lot! Check this slc gem out!

Yelp
My favorite Indian restaurant is not open on Wednesday, we chose this spot since we remember it had good food instead. It also has the priciest lunch buffet around at $17.99 with no specialty items. The food was good. More sweet and spicy. Not what I was craving but it was nice to try something new. The buffet section and restaurant are very clean and have gone through an update since I've been. They bring you fresh naan which got a little dry later. Nice to try something new but I will stick to my favorites.

Yelp
Love the view of this place every time I pull in. Beautiful scenery, knowledgeable staff, welcoming experience. This is already worth its weight. I promise you, the food somehow outweighs the service. Everything from the Lassi to the buffet. Just try it.

Kari L.

Yelp
Excellent lunch buffet with tons of variety and delicious spices. Includes naan and dosas free. Friendly staff with quick service

Zach C.

Yelp
Consistent every time, haven't had a bad trip yet...I get the tikki masala to go and have tried many of their delicious naans. The sweet nutty naan is a must try and with the spicy masala it's a great contrast. Highly recommend!!!

Yelp
We were traveling to Utah from New Jersey where we have so many Indian restaurants so you know we can be picky. But the food was amazing and they even have spice levels for those that enjoy the spice like we do! The ambiance of the place was also really nice and welcoming! The service was also very quick and really friendly! Personally would say this place is better than some restaurants in NJ!

John H.

Yelp
Great food, friendly service, and not too busy. The lunch buffet is always good as well.

Nathan M.

Yelp
The food and flavors were outstanding. The service was superb and friendly. The ambiance was quiet and relaxing (although I would've liked more authentic music). I would definitely come here again when craving Indian food.
google avatar

Ashley P.

Yelp
I've ordered take out from here a few times, and it's always been ready on time. The food is always hot and fresh. We've only tried a few things, but I can say both the butter chicken and tikka masala are great. If you're looking for an easy option for to go I would definitely recommend. The dining room also has never been too busy when I've picked up, and the service seems great. So I don't think you can go wrong either way.

Violet V.

Yelp
Great food, staff and view! love coming in at least 1x a month. They brought back the buffet on weekends and highly recommend it.

Yelp
Vegetarian Indian family from Houston visiting Utah wanting Indian food, we had mid expectations about this place, bc, Utah.... but holy smokes... this food was AMAZING. No joke, some of the best, flavorful, Indian food we've ever had. We like hot/spicy so we ordered everything spicy and it hit well. Service and ambiance was great as well. We had a 2yr old having a bad day and they did what they could to help calm him.

Yelp
I saw they had the thali lunch special on their Instagram and was immediately drawn to it because it was basically a sampler! It included cilantro chicken, saag, chaat, pickles, tandoori chicken, roasted cauliflower, gulab jamun (dessert), tikka masala and dal taska. It was served with rice, naan and papadum. First, I loved how I got to try a little bit of everything! My favorites were the cilantro chicken, chaat, and tikka masala. The chickens were oh so tender. It just fell apart (in a good way!). I cannot believe all this food was only $13!!! What the heck?? It was enough for 3 meals for me. I don't eat huge portions, so it might've been enough for 1.5 meals for average folks.
google avatar

Prashant B.

Yelp
Food was tasty. We went for the afternoon buffet which was around $20. Since we are veg we would have liked a couple more veg choices. There was only 1 veg curry and dal. We enjoyed the food.

Yelp
One of the few places that serve Indian buffet and great value for money. Biryani can be better.

Mahesh C.

Yelp
Absolutely great indian food.such variety they have.we ordered butter chicken, coconut korma and garlic naan.it was a great dinner for us.Thanks for the waiter for the great suggestions.great service taken care by him.ambiance is very good.

Yash S.

Yelp
Been here with my family.food is great.the ambience is refreshing.want to visit again.had coconut korma and tandoori chicken along with garlic naan.it is the best in town.so flavourful. Thanks for the waiter for suggesting great dishes.

Jonas O.

Yelp
This is hands-down, the best Indian restaurant in Utah! Amazing food and customer service. Love this place.

Yelp
We ordered the Saag Paneer and Malabar Fish Curry. I didn't love the Saag Paneer because the cream subdued the spices, although the paneer itself was toothsome. The Malabar Fish Curry was a treat. The fish was the perfect texture and mild in flavor, allowing the curry to shine. I wish I had requested the Hot or Fire spice level for both dishes because I couldn't detect any heat at the Medium level. Given that we are facing a pandemic, I feel it necessary to mention that social distancing was excellently handled and staff wore masks, making dining indoors feel very safe. Our waiter Mahesh managed to maximize customer service while minimizing exposure. For this, I am bumping my rating up to a 4. TLDR: The Malabar Fish Curry is delicious. Choose a spice level higher than your usual. Saffron Valley is a safe choice for those timidly returning to indoor dining.

Todd T.

Yelp
The several times I have visited Saffron I have enjoyed the food immensely. The service was outstanding, in many ways personalized. In one of my visits I suffered from a serious AFib episode and the waiters were very helpful getting myself and my friend to our car so that I could get to the ER. The place is cozy and clean. I've had the buffet, which is also clean and the food warm. This is a personal favorite.

Jared D.

Yelp
The food was very good, I ordered take out from this location and received the food on time, but what was special about my visit was that I forgot to order the drinks. Upon asking to order they promptly filled up two cups with my desired beverages and said it was on the house. Genuinely, this place has superior service and appreciation for their customers, while also servicing fantastic food. Would absolutely recommend for anyone who looking for fantastic meal and experience

Lola C.

Yelp
Food was very reasonably priced, the atmosphere was beautiful, and the service was amazing! Would definitely come back.
google avatar

Mary M.

Yelp
We love highly recommend this restaurant. We have never had a bad meal. The best curry around. If you like spice here is your place. However, you can pick your level of heat. I like mine hot! We have worked our way through most the menu. And and even when we've had everything we'll continue to go.

Yelp
This location of Saffron Valley is much more spacious than their location in Sugar House. When you first walk in, there is a large vestibule area with stairs leading up to the main dining area. I love that the interior of the building has a lot of old dark wood, and a large bar (which is not really used for a bar, since we are in SLC). I came here for the lunch buffet on a weekend, which I feel is pretty pricey for a weekend, but totally in line with what other Indian restaurants around town charge on the weekends. They have chai on the buffet, and a very well lit area on the side of the room for the whole buffet. I love that each location has similar, but different entrees available on their buffet, so there is always something new to try. My favorites area always their chicken dishes, and vegetarian dishes. I also tried a dish they made with shrimp, that was really quite good, especially for being in Utah, away from the ocean! All of the waitstaff here are very friendly and love sharing their knowledge of food with customers.

Yelp
Saffron Valley is one of my staples and my favorite Indian restaurant in SLC, it's my comfort place and one of my favorites for takeout. What I love most about Saffron Valley is that the quality of their food is always consistent and the service is exceptionally friendly. They're always extremely appreciative of their customers no matter how busy they are. They always take an incredible amount of time checking with the chef to make sure everything I eat is allergen free. I generally order their saag paneer and it's always flavorful and perfectly spiced. I've tried many other Indian restaurants in the area and am often disappointed with how bland their dishes are which is not a concern with Saffron Valley. They also have a menu that accommodates every dietary restrictions so this is a great place to go with friends that have different food preferences. They offer dishes that are vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, along side many options for people with no restrictions. The portions are generous so I leave with lunch for the next day. The desert menu and is always perfectly sweetened but not overwhelming. I also love how many Lassi flavors they offer and I often crave their rice pudding. Absolutely delicious and one of my most visited restaurants. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Mango pickle was expired. Absolutely sour. When I caught it the male server doubted my comment. Funny since Ive cooked in commercial kitchens. I was the only customer in the place, and I had to ask for a second serving of naan by approaching the bar. Minutes late three tables were full of men. The server was all over them. I never got a decent hello. I never was asked how my meal was. The food was the best Indian food I've tried in the area but I will keep looking, maybe around Draper, etc. I will not support a business with staff who treats women like second class citizens. There is a lot of this in Utah as is. Having to deal with it when I'm paying for a service is just beyond me! Any women reading this please think twice about supporting them. Also, after the mango pickle was pulled off the floor, I was not thanked or apologized to for having to taste test it. Appalling service! I left no tip whatsoever and will never return.

Yelp
Misleading advertising...their website beautifully details a thali whose items change daily except that it doesn't exist now. When I asked about the thali at the restaurant at lunch time, I was told that it is too expensive now to offer the thali. Apparently, the manager has been given this feedback before to remove the thali description from the website but it is still there. I understand inflationary pressures but why carry misleading information? Food: Below average. The masala dosa filling was bland. I left it mostly uneaten. The sambhar tasted like a dal with vegetables, without the characteristic sambhar taste. The chai was fine. My stomach bloated up soon after the meal. Customer service: I actually called twice before going to the restaurant, to check about the thali. The first time there was no sound. The second time, the person took the call saying , "We are open at 11 am" and hung up before I could even say hello. The third time, the phone kept ringing and no one answered. Finally the credit card receipt, had a 'suggested additional tip' on top of the tip I had already left. Seriously?!!

Yelp
I ordered takeout so I can't speak to their service, but the food was delicious. My husband and I both ordered our dishes "spicy", and they were. (Chicken tikka masala and chicken vindaloo.) Wonderful depth of flavor and a good amount of sauce that left our lips tingling in a good way. Wish we were local so we could try more dishes!

Frank M.

Yelp
When we are seeking a special dinner, my partner and I love to go to Saffron Valley in the Avenues. We've had multiple appetizers and entrees, and we've always found the food to live up to the highest standards of taste and freshness. The Fish Amritsari and the Saffron Sampler are extraordinary appetizers. My partner appreciates the Tikka Masala, and my favorite has been the Lamb Biryani; it's fragrant and the lamb is tender. Over the past few years, we've ordered a range of dishes and have never been disappointed.
google avatar

Emily H.

Yelp
The interior was super cute and the service was excellent! Our server Sreekanth was kind and passionate about the menu! We ordered the Masala Dosa, Chicken Pakoras and Chicken Tikka Masala. I literally could stop saying "mhhhhm" the entire meal. Thank you for an amazing experience.
google avatar

Rashed K.

Yelp
We ate at this restaurant for 37 days straight - when we just relocated to SLC from the East Coast! That tells something about the food, service, and ambiance of this place! The only place where you can have a Tuesday night buffet and Indian food festival week! You should definitely try their Lamb Chop! Secret tip - go to Hatch Family Chocolate after you have your food here! :)

Yelp
Overall impression: Neat ambience. Great Buffet. Service was good too. Lunch Buffet (weekend): $13.99 Came here for the lunch buffet. It was great. Totally worth the money. Probably the most variety I've had at an Indian Buffet yet. And the service was outstanding. Everyone was really nice. They filled our water quickly. They also replenished food very often (and they really didn't need to, because most people were done with the food). My favorite was the goat curry but everything was really good. I just wanted to add that the ambience is very interesting. It obviously used to be a Japanese restaurant that they took over so you're basically eating Indian food in a Japanese looking building with a Japanese garden outside. It's hilarious. Try it out.

Yelp
I swear that I left a review before, it is no where to be found. Been coming here on and off for the past 5 years. The review is for the Sunday buffet only as I haven't came on other days or ordered off the menu. They remodeled the buffet station a couple months ago and it is more open and has room for extra items. Food is fresh, colorful, and full of flavor. Never have I been disappointed eating here. Sometimes the spice level is more than I can handle. They always change buffet items and keeps it interesting. Friendly staff that are very attentive. Always will be back.

Yelp
My family and I are a big fan of this place! I'm almost hesitant to write this review because it feels like our hidden gem. Oh well, plenty of delicious food to go around!! Seriously can't go wrong with ANY of the curries. My top 2 favorites are the Tikka Masala and butter chicken. Soo flavorful. The dosas are super yummy too. Especially with the coconut and tomato chutney and sambar they serve it with. Can't get enough of those! Service is a little on the slower side so not a place if you're in a rush. We've never had to wait for a table though. One caution...the place has been really cold inside every time I've gone. I would bring a jacket if you're a baby with the cold like me. Apart from that, love love love this restaurant!
google avatar

Alondra C.

Yelp
I was really craving Indian food this morning so I was looking through yelp and found this gem. I am absolutely in love with this place! The food is amazing! We got samosas which sorry but they didn't stand a chance with the picture, I devoured mine. I got the hottest Lamb times masala and my husband got the Saffron mix, we also ordered the cheese garlic naan. I swear to you when I say that I could eat this everyday! My husband loved everything and so did I, the flavors taste authentic and I was saying "This is so good" the entire time. I definitely recommend it here!!
google avatar

Erin H.

Yelp
Oh Saffron Valley, how I love you. This is the best Indian in salt lake in my opinion. The restaurant is beautiful, the people are kind, the service is fast and the food is top notch. My personal favorite would be the coconut korma curry with paneer and garlic naan. Oh, and also you have to try the rose lassi if they have them. Your life will change forever!

Yelp
Ordered through Doordash a while ago. Delicious flavorful food. Good serving size. I enjoyed them.

Angelina A.

Yelp
The food always tastes amazing, and is fairly inexpensive! 10/10 recommend the biryani. The staff are always so kind and fun to chat with, and give the best recommendations and advice for the food. Its a very chill and inviting atmosphere, truly a gem in the avenues :)

Yelp
Friendly staff, cute restaurant, and great food. I'll have to try and stop by during the buffet to try some new dishes.
