Best Restaurants and Bars in Collingswood, New Jersey, Near Philly | Eater Philly

"Open since the mid-’70s, this wood-paneled gem was one of the first to bring sushi to the region. A frequent James Beard Award semifinalist, Sagami is still providing some of the freshest raw seafood magic. Chef Shigeru Fukuyoshi’s seasonal chirashi and sashimi are as delicious as they are beautiful. Reservations are encouraged." - Ernest Owens

Where to Find the Freshest Sushi in Philly

"Collingswood’s favorite sushi restaurant, Sagami, is open for dining in, though takeout is still a great option, too. One of their most impressive sushi rolls is the hamachi maki — a tasty yellowtail roll with scallion. Make reservations or order a la carte rolls, sushi dinners, or hot apps and entrees by phone. Reminder: It’s BYOB." - Ernest Owens

Everyone who worked there was very friendly and helpful with the menu. They have a great variety of foods and will definitely like to go back to try again. All the dishes felt delicately made. The tofu appetizer was my favorite of everything i tried.

First time going to Sagami. Went on a Thursday evening, didn’t expect to see so many packed tables. Food: Mostly great Best thing we got was the chirashi bowl with lots of fatty and tasty sashimi over rice — 5/5 Agedashi tofu was very good, with the tofu fully absorbed in the dashi based soy sauce. The tofu was lightly fried, giving it an airy texture — 5/5 Vegetable tempuras were not good. The tempura coating was not airy at all and instead very thick to chew through and was overall lacking flavor or seasoning — 1/5 Special Note on Service: My mother and I (Asians) clearly felt the waitress treated us differently from how she treated the other patrons in the restaurant. We felt mostly dismissed and greeted very differently than how the other patrons were enthusiastically served. All I was looking from the service was just some fairness. Maybe it’s because other patrons were old customers, maybe the waitress was having a bad day. But we couldn’t help but felt treated differently due to preconceived notions of being Asian. I would hesitate to go back just because of how unpleasant the experience was.

Google
One of my favorite places to visit when I'm in town. This restaurant has been here for a very long time and the quality of the food is excellent. Always fresh and always tasty. Service is very nice and very kind regardless of this being your first time or if you're a regular. It is in the middle of nowhere but check out this fantastic Japanese Restaurant. You will not be disappointed.

Google
Came here for my birthday dinner and had an absolutely lovely evening! I’ve been wanting to come here for a while and the wait didn’t disappoint. We ordered the pork gyoza and the spicy salmon with crispy rice for appetizers, both delicious. For sushi, we ordered a salmon avocado roll, a spicy salmon roll, a tuna scallion roll, and salmon nigiri. The quality of the fish was absolutely incredible, fresh and melt in your mouth. The service was top notch, our waitress was beyond kind and so cheerful. Definitely don’t miss the green tea ice cream, super flavorful!

Google
Sagami is a must visit for anyone who loves authentic Japanese food. The chirashi bowl is outstanding with beautifully arranged fish that tastes incredibly fresh and clean. The individual sushi pieces are equally amazing with perfectly seasoned rice and expertly sliced fish that melts in your mouth. The staff is warm and attentive and the cozy classic atmosphere makes every meal feel special.

Google
Expensive, but quality. The sashimi was melt-in-your-mouth fresh and the Nasu Shigiyaki was delicious. The vegetable tempura was better than average but I’ve had much better. The coating was a bit thick for my taste… but we still ate it all. 😅

Google
Sagami has long been the standard by which I judge other Japanese restaurants. It decor is dark wood and low ceilings. And it is often packed with happy clients who provide that "buzz" in many successful places.

Google
Me and my boyfriend had the most lovely dinner and the best sushi of my life. The waitstaff were so attentive and aware of the vibe. If you are deep in conversation they know just when to time visiting your table. My water was always filled before I realized it was low and when my waitress noticed me moving a plate out of the way she magically appeared cleared the plate and helped me move another platter towards me. They care so much about the service here and deserve so much respect and appreciation. I got the 18pc chefs choice sushi and it was stupendous EVERY SINGLE PIECE TASTED AMAZING! Also! The lighting is so warm and inviting and I definitely recommend getting a pot of tea to sip on throughout your meal especially in the colder months.

Yelp
Best place ever! Don't let the location of the exterior fool you. This place is outstanding. Lovely and warm inside. Service is efficient. The food is just fantastic. Make a reservation

Yelp
I have been to this restaurant many times before the change of ownership and have always like the food. It was the most authentic Japanese restaurant in South Jersey. This was my first time here after the restaurant change of ownership. The food is no longer the same. The quality has substantially dropped. The food looked and tasted like what you could get in the other Chinese owned sushi restaurants, at a lower price!! The authenticity of the sushi, what Segami was known for, has degraded. However, the service is excellent, as always. Good to see a few old faces are still there.

Yelp
We went here for our anniversary. We were the first patrons of the night. I think be bought into hype in anticipation of an authentic Japanese restaurant experience. Being from Delaware, we are used to Chinese-owned sushi restaurants, so this was going to be epic. Sushi rolls were fine. Salmon Teriyaki was okay, but nothing special. The worst part was that we wanted a NY strip steak Teriyaki, and they were out (and we were the first patrons of the day). Chirashi was overrated. There wasn't much natural flavor and I felt the need to douse it with soy sauce. I did find myself forcing it down my throat to justify the cost of the chirashi bowl. If we come back, we're going to stay away for the customer favorite.

Yelp
Went here on one of our visits after an evening at the movies but given the late hour our choices were limited so was looking forward to going back and trying other menu items and it did not disappoint. Service was great and wait staff were warm and friendly. Sushi was very good and delicious. We were happy to go back when we had more time to enjoy more of the menu options available. This would be a great date night restaurant as it is quiet and lighting gives more intimate vibes. Would highly recommend....

Yelp
Not an enjoyable night at Sagami. I believe they are too busy for their own good. Sushi tasted fine, but the Maguro was mushy, clearly not good quality. Perhaps it was refrozen or not defrosted properly. This was the first time I've had poor quality fish from Sagami. In addition, to the poor-quality tuna, the waitress brought my wife an incorrect dinner. She ordered the mixed fried seafood, which the waitress correctly wrote on her pad. Unfortunately, she entered the order into the kitchen system as shrimp tempura. My wife ate the tempura, but that was not what we wanted. In fairness, the waitress asked if my wife wanted it replaced. We declined as my food was on the table, and the point of going to a restaurant with someone is to enjoy the meal together. We will help solve the overcrowding issue at Sagami by not returning for a year or two. There are plenty of mediocre Japanese restaurants from which to choose. Sagami has become one of them.

Yelp
We really liked this place, tasty sushi & chicken katsu, great old-school decor and staff that was joking, happy and really felt like family. Highly recommended!

Yelp
What I had: Chef's choice sushi. My benchmarks: Harutaka (Tokyo), Kusakabe (San Francisco) and Kosaka (NYC). Needless to say, I am pretty picky. I love Sagami. You can drive to the restaurant and park in their lot. Hokkaido uni was super fresh. Bluefin toro with caviar. My 5 year old loves their broiled salmon. It is BYOB so I don't have to overspend to have super premium sake with my meal. And the price is 1/2 of the "top spots in the Philadelphia area". Sure, it is not a place to see or be seen like Royal Izakaya or Hiroki. My wife wears jeans and a t-shirt going to Sagami. But if you are looking for a kid-friendly yet super high quality sushi/sashimi, Sagami gets my #1 vote and 5 stars.

Yelp
I have been coming to Sagami for years now. I come for any big celebration like birthdays or graduations. This is by far the best and most fresh sushi you can get in the Philadelphia area. The chirashi bowl is expensive but the most bang for your buck with all the variety you get. My favorite fish is definitely the scallop. It is SO fresh and sweet! They serve free hot green tea, if you ask. During busy times, it can take up to 1 hour to get food from the sushi kitchen, but worth the wait! Meanwhile, the regular kitchen is pretty quick. I recommend the fried oysters (huge, plump, and juicy!), tempura, or agedashi tofu. The waiters are always polite. The ambiance is homey and classy. The ceiling is quite low, so watch out! This is one of my favorite places, love it here!
google avatar

Yelp
Surprisingly good and not too expensive. Wouldn't get rolls again because they're small but I liked the tofu, collar, sukiyaki and tempura. Staff was nice and attentive but the restaurant was really hot
google avatar

Yiran G.

Yelp
Fresh fish, thick cut, big restaurant with very good service. So much better than Royal Sushi Izakaya in Philly. Please everyone come here and try their fish then you would think Royal Sushi Izakaya taste like S****.

Yelp
Boring and expensive food. Steak teriyaki seasoning is pretty boring, and it comes with no rice, and it costs close to $40. The veggie on the plate is just boiled veggie.. The pork skewer is kinda deceiving because it's 2 cubes of pork and 2 cubes of just plain onion lol.. and the meat is a little dry. The rolls are normal. The restaurant is too dark.

Yelp
Went back last night- first time under the new ownership. Just as a heads up their website isn't up to date. They're opened more days now (check on Google). I mentioned it to the waitress who then said something to the hostess. I just overheard a bit of their convo and the hostess's tone in her response was a little interesting. But whatever they'll figure it out- that's prob why it was pretty empty there last night though. We recognized a couple of the same servers so we were really happy about them (they're so so sweet). A little change in the menu- noticed they have a chirashi A and B. We tried b because we love uni- 18 dollars more but it was so good! They said they wouldn't change much so I'm glad the chirashi is still delicious as ever.

Yelp
my co resident hyped this place up so much and we finally had the time to go tonight!! we all got the chirashi bowl ($38) and one of my co residents got two sushi rolls ($20). i'd give the chirashi bowl a 7/10. i liked the scallop and the variety of fish in the bowl but honestly the fish didn't taste as fresh? maybe it was just today bc my co resident goes all the time and says that this item is the best thing on the menu. i did like the fried oysters tho. 9/10. very attentive servers. ask for hot tea bc it's free! it gets rly busy so ur only allowed to order once and the food can take up an hour to come out. i recommend making a reservation before coming too. there's plenty of parking here as well. not super blown away by this place but willing to give this place another try bc i wanna try their sushi rolls!!!

Raspberry H.

Yelp
The original owner/staff are gone....it's so sad because the taste / serving is not the same anymore. Sagami used to be one of the best authentic Japanese restaurants in NJ but not anymore. The rice is too much now in chirashi and quality is not that good. The quantity and also quality of sashimi is different now. Japanese take pride with whatever they do it's pricey but you'll get the best! The taste in this restaurant is no longer special they taste like some sushi shop buffet out there.

Yelp
We have finally found our favorite Japanese restaurant in the area. I would recommend making reservations. Everything is good and they give tea. We will be back! I ordered the seaweed salad which came with different kinds of seaweed. I have never had anything like it before. It was cool and also delicious and light! The chirashi was good too. I did notice that the chirashi bowls are made differently every time so you might not always get the exact same cuts of fish which makes it fun too!
google avatar

Jonathan H.

Yelp
The best authentic Japanese sushi restaurant in the Philadelphia area. The charashi bowl is a must-order. It's the freshest tasting sashimi I've ever had!! You get free hot green tea. The service can be a little slow - sometimes up to an hour for your food from the sushi kitchen. However, food from the regular kitchen doesn't take too long. If you want appetizers, I would recommend the oysters and shrimp tempura. Perfect place for a celebration where you want to spend a little extra time with people. It's also BYOB!
google avatar

Anna S.

Yelp
I love the ambiance at this place! The romantic dim lighting and the interior decoration definitely does not match the exterior of this restaurant. My friends and my partner ordered the chirashi which actually takes a while to come out so I would put this order in early if you already know you want this item. I got the unaju which is eel rice bowl. I had asked the waitress for less rice and surprisingly they did gave me the perfect amount of rice! I was also pleasantly surprised at how much eel was in the bento. It was delicious. My partner's favorite item from the chirashi was the scallops. We also got tempura and cold tofu to share and enjoyed all the appetizers. This is a great place for a romantic sushi date and also a great dinner spot with friends. The seatings are nicely spaced out - it wasn't too loud and it was easy to have a conversation within your group. I highly recommend coming here for good authentic Japanese food!

Yelp
I am SOOO late in trying this place! Evidently has been serving some of the best sushi in the tri-state area for over a decade at least! Went with some friends for a bday celebration on a Friday night, no reservations and luckily got a table for 4! It got quite full by about 8pm. The owners/servers were sooo sweet. Service was exceptional. And the food?! I haven't had a sushi place blow me away like this in a very long time! Presentation, freshness and overall taste of everything was def 5 stars! I heard that one of the owners is prob 80 or so now and still making sushi at the counter! I intend on going as often as I can before he retires! And you guys should too!
google avatar

Lisa B.

Yelp
Try the chirashi. It's a pile of very fresh fish atop a bowl of sushi rice. We sat at the sushi bar and saw so many of those going out that I had to try one. It was really delicious. Stopped in before a concert at the nearby Freedom Mortgage Center and it hit the spot. Excellent sushi.
google avatar

Yelp
Definitely one of the best and more authentic sushi places I've had east of California. To be fair, I haven't had a lot of raw fish on the east coast, but I've been told for the Philly area that this place is top tier with authenticity and freshness. We didn't have time to go to NYC on this trip, but I think this place wasn't far behind some of the expensive and elite restaurants in NYC in terms of quality of fish. The decor however was dated here, but nothing against them for that. The servers were pretty friendly here and the service overall was great. We ordered several sushi combis and some side dishes/orders. Would highly recommend to make reservations if possible. We got lucky because we came right at opening, but even then they were hesitant to seat us since a bunch of reservations were already arriving and as we left, the parking lot was packed!
google avatar

Natassja A.

Yelp
Wow, just wow! Very interesting japanese decor and moody lighting throughout the place. Awesome spot for date night, celebratory or a group dinner (within up to 8 people). It gets super busy and you certainly need to place a reservation. Parking gets full very quickly, would recommend carpooling if coming as a group. The service was wonderful, our waitress was very sweet and attentive. They did not rush us, brought out an ice bucket for our sake without being asked, often refilled our water as needed and checked in if we needed anything. The enoki and tempura were delicious appetizers! The enoki had just the right umami. The mix and egg and enoki was a delicious combination. Tempura was crispy and not overcooked. The chirashi bowl was mouthwatering & AMAZING. Absolutely delicious and filling. I barely could finish the amount of food in the bowl. The tamago, tuna and scallops were SOO good. The rice was perfectly seasoned. The roe was crunchy and sweet. I did however learn that I do not like squid haha. The texture was just not for me. I will most definitely return! An absolutely gem in South Jersey for sushi & japanese cuisine.

DeAnn M.

Yelp
The food changed so much we went twice with the new owners and it's was awful. Does anyone know if it improved?
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
So you're looking at reviews on Yelp and don't know about Sagami? Where have you been? Sagami is an absolute treasure and every meal is a gift from God. We've visited Sagami weekly since moving to Cherry Hill and are always extremely satisfied with the high quality of this food for such reasonable prices. The decor is without frills but not without charm. The low ceilings and small booths are unique for sure but just like the food, they're one of a kind. Make no mistake, this food is high end but at prices comparable to any suburban Japanese restaurant.
google avatar

Denise F.

Yelp
Absolutely deliciously fresh sushi. It's nothing fancy but it's a south Jersey icon!!
google avatar

Neka R.

Yelp
I came here with 2 friends around 12:15pm. We were seated promptly and more than half of the tables were seated. The ceiling is low, I'm 5'10'' and am close to hitting my head, but it feels cozy and warm inside. Japanese decor, I've never been to Japan, but from the photos I've seen it looks authentic. We tried a bunch of food between the three of us. I had the tonkatsu which is a breaded pork cutlet, it was tender and the breading crunchy. I also had nigiri of tuna, anagi, and unagi, as well as an "eel avocado roll. The unagi nigiri was the best I've ever had, and while I've never had tuna or anagi nigiri, they were very enjoyable. I put eel avocado roll in quotes because they brought me a regular eel roll with some sliced avocado on the side. I got a kick out of it. My tonkatsu came with a very flavorful salad and miso soup, both were good. One friend had the marinated chicken box and the yellowfin roll, he said he really enjoyed both and the other friend said the shrimp tempura roll was the best she ever had. Service was friendly and quick. I will be back! Edit: Wanted to post an update since the news of the passing. RIP Mrs. Fukuyoshi. I first came here 4 years ago, and most recently in November of 2023 on a date with my girlfriend and I enjoyed every bit of it. The news of Mrs. Fukuyoshi passing is sad. Sagami is an institution and I thank the family and employees for the opportunity to have eaten here over the years.
google avatar

Yelp
So sad , love the legacy staff at this former institution of south Jersey, but the new owner (as of January 2025) has managed to ruin this restaurant in a matter of 30 days. They are more focused now on adding online reservations vs carry the torch of Shigeru Fukuyoshi. They've increased prices (20% on most items) , drastically reduced fish quality (anyone who truly knows sagami will understand) , and added a bunch of items to the menu no one asked for...or wanted. I feel terrible for the staff that were there forever, as they will see the majority of their "regulars" will think out and stop coming . The business model has drastically changed from quality fish and preparation (anyone who knows, it use do take a long time to get your sushi) to quick turnover, and drastically reduced fish quality. So sad. I wish they sold to someone who took pride in the legacy of this James beard finalist, instead of non- Japanese ownership that care more to squeeze every last dollar from less discerning customers. Spicy tuna roll with crunchy, was poorly rolled and not quality fish, the nigiri all tasted of poor quality, and the sushi rice now tastes more in line with a Chinese restaurant. All the nigiri was served way too cold, and fish quality was mid to low tier, hate to say it but it was true. Alan Su, you had an opportunity to continue a tradition, instead you botched the handoff and have begun to do irreparable damage to this former top tiered Japanese restaurant. What were you thinking? You could've continued to source fish the same way, and keep the same sushi staff, and sam's quality, but you just had to do the cheap / make it on volume route. WHAT ARE YOU DOING????? Fish quality significantly down, price up Look around folks, patrons of sagami take pride, and Alan Su blew it, I feel bad for the staff that didn't get fired during the transition Sad

Yelp
My bf introduced to me this family oriented restaurant. We went there for his birthday and Valentine's. The place was packed but services are super fast, friendly, and professional. Highly recommend their Chirashi and Fried Oysters.

Yelp
Absolutely best sushi in this area. Fresh, delicious, beautifully presented. Ambiance is intimate/dim lighting, perfect for date night. Loved it. (BYOB + highly recommended to make reservations)
google avatar

Justina A.

Yelp
Came on a really busy night so it took over an hour for the food to come out, but the staff was very nice! The fish was extremely fresh! I loved the variety in the chirashi bowl. It seemed like most parties at the restaurant were ordering the chirashi bowl! The sushi chefs were hard at work crafting each bowl.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
After all the buzz lately about the six Philly chefs being semi-finalists for the James Beard award, there's also a sushi chef in Collingswood, NJ also being one. Fresh off the trip from Annapolis with a local Maryland Cabernet Sauvignon in hand, this was the perfect opportunity to go back to this New Jersey byob restaurant to enjoy it again knowing how much I've liked it before. The space, small, dimly lit lights, and the service was amazing, always checking up on you to make sure you're good. Perfect for a night out with friends or even a date. Started off with the gyoza, the flavors, you just know it's made in house. Then did a sashimi appetizer dish, shrimp tempura and eel roll with tobiko, uni, sea scallop nigiri and the tuna donburi bowl. Like the first time around, everything was so good, definitely worth crossing the bridge for
google avatar

Yelp
What a hidden gem in South Jersey! It's BYOB and I recommend making a reservation if possible. It gets busy! The sushi is always fresh. The staff is so nice!

Yelp
Sagami is always a treat. It is my favorite sushi restaurant in the Philadelphia area and the best sushi I've had in NJ. My husband and I have enjoyed sushi from our time living in CA and visiting HI but and Sagami is the closest we've come to a similar experience. We had an appetizer of Negimaki (the only cooked course we ordered), which was tasty beef rolled around scallions, lightly fried and served in a tasty sauce. We also ordered a Chirashi, which is a selection of fish and tobiko (fish roe) served over sushi rice, flounder sushi, and a tuna avocado roll. The service was gracious, as always, our service explaining the extra time required to prepare the Chirashi (on a Friday night), frequently refilling our water, and ensuring we had what we needed for our bottle of wine (BYOB). The atmosphere in the restaurant is really special as it is designed in a Japanese decor, and the lighting is subtle and warm. Sagami is a great date night place in that regard. We try to come here whenever we are in the area. Please also remember that you must call to make a reservation. I called one week in advance for a table for two on a Friday at 6:30pm. This restaurant is always busy on weekends. If you like sushi, you'll love Sagami.
google avatar

Ellie B.

Yelp
Wow!! I've been here several times and it seems that each is better than the last! In my opinion, Sagami is the best sushi spot in the region, including Philly. My favorite thing to order is the sushi box B. It has such a wonderful assortment and everything is incredibly fresh. This time, we started with some of the delicious seaweed salad, edamame, and miso soup. The standout appetizer however was the nasu shigiyaki! I hadn't ordered this before but it was so amazing I will definitely be getting it again the next time I visit! The miso chicken filling is so savory, and the eggplant shell is perfectly cooked. Be warned though, it is a larger serving so definitely order this to share! Service here is always impeccable, super attentive with food coming out quickly and fresh. The interior is cozy, with low ceilings and low lighting by each table. Can't recommend it here enough!

Yelp
Im so sad the restaurant changed owners. My mother in-law is from Japan and this is the only Japanese restaurant she would go to. Our family has been coming here since 1974. Prior to the new owner we would be greeted and were given warm towels to clean hands upon being seated. ( something different from your typical restaurant and how its done in Japan) Menu- You would have the option of ordering Ala carte or the dinner. Dinner include Miso soup and salad to start, your meal came with rice, desert and tea were also included in the price. Now there are no towels given to clean hands, salad, soup and rice desert and anything else you want are all charged separately. All prices went up which can be expected in this economy. I just wished they left the menu and raised the prices and kept everything else the same. The food is still very good but I was left feeling disappointed. I felt the old appeal was gone. I would have even been OK with prices being raised if we were still able to get the full course meal. I think I would give a 5 star review if the raised the prices and left the restaurant and menu as it was. It's not surprising the restaurant was not packed as it was before. Previously on a Sat. night this place wouldn't have a seat open at 6pm and there would be a line out the door. When we left tonight at 6pm there was plenty of seating available. I'm sad for the waitresses that have been here year after year. Less people is less money. The food is good but Im not sure I'll make the hour drive to come here for this menu, before it was worth the hour drive but now Im not so sure. .

Yelp
Based on all the positive reviews, the secret is out on this authentic Japanese restaurant. Now I will be honest. Upon arrival, Sagami's location will make you hesitate if you've found the right spot. It's tucked away in a dense residential neighborhood next to a busy road and overhead train tracks. But I swear to you, once you step inside, all that disappears. It is soooo quiet inside, oh my goodness. I don't know what kind of soundproofing they use, but I want that in my home. The dark wood decor, the low ceilings, and the soft diffused lighting peering through the window treatments all make you feel as if you've suddenly transported yourself to some remote part of Japan. I honestly forgot that we were still in Collingswood, New Jersey. Now, I'm not a sushi guy, but I came here for the udon. The Tanuki Udon, to be exact. Which was soothing, comforting, and tasty. I was pleased. This is the perfect date spot if you're looking to transport yourself into an authentic Japanese restaurant. However, I would recommend going there during "non-date hours"...like as soon as they open on a weeknight. I would imagine that the place can get rather packed, and with all those tiny tables, this is not the place for large people or groups to gather. (Tall people, beware, you may not be comfortable with those low-hanging ceilings.) The prices for all their dishes are super affordable compared to other swanky places you could take a date to. But what makes this places unique is its decor, ultra-cozy atmosphere, and intimate setting. As one of my friends who lived in Japan for a while and loves this place, I can now see why. I highly recommend it.

Yelp
Sagami is a HIDDEN GEM! It's extremely hard to find, since it's right off the freeway and the parking lot entrance is kind of tiny. But, when we did find it, we walked in and let them know we had a party of 9. We called ahead of time to make a reservation, but unfortunately, they do not accommodate parties larger than 6 for reservations. Upon entering, the take out table was transformed into a table for us to sit since no other table was large enough. It was right by the door (which kinda sucked because it was cold, but after sitting there for quite some time, the breeze from the door opening was pleasant) ANYWHOOO -- it's a BYOB place (which we love woohoo). Upon sitting down, the one thing that kind of bothered me is that it took the server about 30 minutes to come to our table to take our order. We were sitting there for quite some time waiting for someone to attend to us. But, I understand a little because the place was PACKEDD!! and when I mean packed, you are basically breathing on the person next to you. The place is super quaint and super tiny. It reminds me of an authentic Japanese restaurant in japan. The atmosphere was lowly lit, and you could see the sushi chefs prepare the sushi at the counter. We ordered quite a few things since we had a large party. We started off by ordering the Hamachi (fried fish), but unfortunately, they didn't have any more :( booo. As for the rest of the appetizers, we ordered the tofu, edamame and gyoza. For entrees, we ordered Sushi A and Sushi B, Charishi, Salmon Skin Roll, and Unagi Tobiko Maki roll. The one thing about the appetizers that stood out to me most was the tofu. It's 4 pieces of soft tofu with a little crispy outside in a swamp of this light, delicate, sweet soy sauce. It wasn't overpowering and complemented the tofu so well. The sushi assortments from both A and B were amazinggg!! The sushi rice is flavored perfectly, you can taste the sweetness and vinegary-ness. And the fish is high quality. There was no gamey or fishy taste left behind. It melted in your mouth and was so tender and soft. The charishi bowl was the same. Super high quality fish on a bed of fluffy, soft, sushi rice. The sushi in both the A and B combo had a hint of wasabi. So, if you aren't a fan of that, just beware. I think it was the perfect amount added :) The Salmon skin roll was a little too salty for my liking, but it did have the perfect crispy crunch. But, the unagi tobiko maki roll? AMAZING. you HAVE to order this roll, no questions asked. The reason why this place didnt get 5 starts is how long we had to wait in order to get our order taken. We spent a total of 2.5 hours in there, and it was a little frustrating because of how hungry we were. The time it took the food to come out was pretty long, but looking at how delicate each fish was placed, and how the cuts were - you can tell they took the time to make sure that there was the perfect balance of rice and fish and that the presentation was appealing. Definitely will come here again with just me and my husband. The place is a good date place and it's super intimate :)

Yelp
We showed up without a reservation 2 hours before closing, and were told there were no tables for the rest of the night. While I can understand being busy, the hostess didn't even try to explain or offer to make us a future reservation. This was quite off putting, and I will not be dining here in the future.

Yelp
I first started dining at Sagami in 1973, and continued for decades. When I was a junior in highschool, I took my girlfriend here for a meal for two: miso soup, salad, cucumber rolls, and red bean ice cream...for $10...including a 15% tip (the style of the times). From Sagami, I learned the joys of sashimi, uni, and wasabi. I fondly remember Chizuko Fukuyoshi, the wife and muse of chef Shigeru Fukuyoshi. Chizuki just passed away at age 79. I cannot articulate the many happy memories I have from their restaurant, but they were indeed "the best of times." May Chizuko enjoy the blessings of heaven that she richly deserves in her next journey. I humbly express my gratitude for the joy that she and her husband gave to me and my friends in the convivial place that they created.

Yelp
Overall: super cute and traditional Japanese restaurant. Sushi is super fresh and waitresses are all very friendly Japanese ladies :) worth the hype and price! Ordered: :D sushi combo A - lots of assorted sushi (picture) and fish quality was soooo good. Worth the $29 Atmosphere: came here for a friends bday and can get loud because so many customers! Also make sure to duck if you are tall because this restaurant is very short. Lots of traditional Japanese decor around restaurant.

Yelp
Very enjoyable experience. The food is delicious, the service is prompt and respectful (of the guests and the chefs), and the atmosphere is relaxed and interesting, but a tad tight. The tables aren't too close together, but the room itself feels cozier than expected. It's still the best sushi I've had in Jersey, through no real fault of the others.

Yelp
Yeah this is a hole in the wall Sushi place in New Jersey right across from Philadelphia. I would highly recommend giving this place a try. The venue very much gives mom & pop vibes. It's quaint and cozy. The fish was extremely high quality, super fresh and tasty. The chirashi bowl was a standout, with a generous sampling of raw fish atop a bowl of rice. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised by the portions at Sagami. Many sushi restaurants I've been to have small portions, but this place did not skimp at all. The other dishes that we got were consistently great. Shoutout to the Tempura, Beef Rolls, Sukiyaki, and Agedashi Tofu. The service was friendly too. Surprisingly, one of the waitresses could speak Cantonese and was good friends with my family. The only reason I'm giving this place only 4 stars is because they don't have Toro Fatty Tuna. In fact, their menu was somewhat limited overall. I wish they had more options for their sushi. Nevertheless, everything was tasty here and I enjoyed the atmosphere.

Yelp
Food was definitely good, but not so much better that it justifies the premium prices. Not that much value for money.

Yelp
Thank you Rue, for selling your amazing restaurant to someone who will continue your legacy. We miss you, Taka and the amazing crew! But so happy to see Brian get the honor of your spot at the sushi counter. After coming and having an amazing dinner for over 37 years (where did the time go). we are so grateful that this new crew will continue your legacy. Food and management remain the same. . Thank you Rue for all the amazing meals after 37 years. Thank you to the new owners, keeping this family loved establishmen, the same. Linda and Jeff (Chugai Boyeki)

Yelp
II never know this great place for sushi until my daughter's classmate recommendation recently. I drove by this area quite often never noticed this hidden treasure. The parking lot is small, but we came earlier In the afternoon (~6:30) for dinner. No reservation, they found a table for us right away. After dinner, there was a long line outside waiting to get in, and cars waiting to park near at the small parking area in the back. The Chirachi Bowl is by far the most popular selection. Shashimi over warm sushi rice covered with seaweed has a great presentation and looks so yummy. We ordered another dish with just Sashimi, and that are enough for two. The fish was fresh and tasted delicious. This is now my favorite place for sushi! Be sure to make reservation for dinner to avoid the long wait if you are coming for dinner.

Yelp
Still one of my favorite sushi places years later. Inside hasn't changed and the food is still consistently great along with the service.

Yelp
Finally got to try this sushi spot I've heard about from so many people! Amazing ambiance and tentative staff. We got the cold tofu, enoki mushroom, udon, tempura appetizers. For entrees we tried the sushi A, sushi B, chirashi bowl, tonkatsu. Definitely recommend the enoki mushrooms, tempura is so light and airy, chirashi bowl, scallop and uni sushi were my top choice! Also the shrimp on the menu is cooked shrimp not sweet shrimp! We were mistaken. Plenty of parking available there as well. Will be back for high quality sushi!

Yelp
Hands down, the best Japanese restaurant in the area. Excellent service and food is fresh and delicious. Have been coming for years and this place has yet to disappoint. The place is quiet and feels like a very traditional Japanese spot. If you want the best, come to Sagami.

Yelp
I can't believe I've never been here. Fortunately, a chance to re-connect with friends I hadn't seen in over 20 years meant dinner here one night. And if you haven't seen each other in over 20 years, the dark mood lighting is very kind - LOL! We completely lucked out and got the booth all the way in the back, so we had no one behind us. It meant we could have great conversation and hear each other. I don't think we would have had the same results had our table been in the middle of the room. Though my friend told me the $3 salad with the miso ginger dressing was the best anywhere, I had to respectfully disagree. It was nice, it was OK, but not the best anywhere. We shared a couple of starters including the $15 main vegetable tempura dish to share as an appetizer. Loved it. We also shared the $7 gyoza app. It was nice. I ordered the $9 unagi roll for myself. It was lovely. But to be honest, this meal would have been the wrong night to benchmark the sushi as among the best I've ever had based on just a few pieces. It was good, I'll give it that. Very impressed with the servers - very patient with us and didn't rush us to get the heck out after we mentioned we were friends catching up after many years.
