The 15 Best Vegan Restaurants in Tokyo, Japan - Eater

"Multigenre chef Katsumi Kusumoto opened this little spot in 2019 in the backstreets of Jiyugaoka, and users on the Happy Cow platform quickly chose it as the world’s top vegan restaurant the following year. While the menu is decidedly washoku (Japanese cuisine), Kusumoto’s experience in high-end French cuisine impacts the food from time to time, like a salad made of scoops of lettuce, lime, and rosemary gelato, or a playful blueberry cheesecake that looks like a potted plant. There are several (somewhat confusing) set-course options: If you want an all-out experience, the 8,800 yen ($60) special-course meal gives you a little bit of everything. But you can also opt for the 3,300 yen ($22) prix fixe dinner to try the justly famous unaju (grilled “eel” served over rice in a lacquered box), then order a few extra side dishes, such as the fried yuba rolls. While it’s not as fancy as other award-winning restaurants, reservations are most definitely a must." - Chiara Terzuolo

Very lucky to manage to book an amazing menu here for our anniversary. Each course was utterly beautiful to look at and tasted fantastic. Excellent presentation, friendly, welcoming service and the best vibes. Very much one of the best vegan meals I've had.

Vegetarian restaurant with limited seating - please reserve online in advance (the reservation system requires payment via credit card initially before refunding it some time later, please take note) Meals are ordered in sets during online reservation. Both the Unagi Don and Katsu Don mains are delicious, with a variety of creatively presented appetisers and desserts available for selection.

Staple visit every time we’re here in Tokyo. Saido is the best kept secret. You’re paying realllyyyyy reasonable price for a course-meal like experience. If any restaurant absolutely deserves a Michelin star, it would be here, period. 1 soup, 1 appe legumes salad, 1 main, 1 dessert, 2 drinks (+/- surcharges for some more premium options) all for ¥2970. Mena Massoud, live-action Aladdin’s actor, was also here and had amazing things to say about this gem of a place. for more reviews and content pls follow @veganphysiohk and @eatplant.s on IG!!!

Only the decoration looks beautiful but tbh the food was normal - perhaps a little bit overpriced/overrated. The staff was nice! Just try it once but I don't think I will come back again. For me it wasn't worth the money.

The food is so exquisite and delicious. Would definitely want to come back when I am in Tokyo again. Need to book at least a month in advance. Must try.

One of the best vegan restaurants in the world. Chef Katsumi is an artist. His food goes beyond taste - it’s an artistic expression of who he is and the flavors are so complex yet approachable. He makes his own cola for his whisky highballs, his own vegan egg for his ramen, his own eel for his sushi. This is a must try if you are in Japan.

One of the best dining experiences of my life. Staff were super, super friendly, and made the night feel welcome and approachable as someone who hasn't been to a restaurant like this before. The meal was honestly an experience from start to finish; each course was varied but served to make an unforgettable experience. Dinner takes about 2 hours from start to finish, very reasonable prices for what you get. If you're after something you'll never forget, it's Saido hands down.

Excellent. Got the set dinner meal that came with sake, appetizers, salads, main, rice, soups, and dessert. Great service. Presentation, texture and flavor were all superb. A bit expensive for Japan, but worth it. Needs reservation.

Yelp
The #1 vegan restaurant in the world holds up to its reputation... simply wow. // Firstly, I'd like to dedicate my 2100th review to my late brother on his birthday today. Happy 31st, bro! It took me a few years to follow you and go plant based but you remain a big reason why I'm still alive, healthy, and here today. I love you. While Tokyo still has a lot to catch up to become a better vegan-friendly destination, restaurants like Saido give me so much hope and promise. I made reservations online for lunch here and after nearly missing it, am so glad that I got to experience my now favorite vegan restaurant in Japan. This cafe started in 2018 by Chef Katsumi Kusumoto and should be on everyone's must-try list, especially if they are curious or wanting to experience veganized Japanese cuisine. It's tucked away on a not-so busy street so it really feels like you're being swept away for a wonderful experience. Lunch sets set us back ¥2970, which included soup, salad, main entree, dessert, and two drinks (including wine and beer). The journey began right away with soup and salad, where its presentation matched that of fine dining restaurants. For our mains, I tried the Unaju (braised eel rice bowl) and my partner's Katsuju (fried cutlet)... H O L Y. P L A N T. This was the BEST vegan unagi-don I have had yet in Japan! The texture, taste, and composition resembled eel like I had remembered it in my past life. Smoky, teriyaki flavors infused the eel and it was exactly what I hoped it would be. The katsu was also incredibly crispy, juicy, and tender. This is no simple soy-meat that's been deep fried, it was on another level. The experience concluded with another glass of wine with our sweet dessert - the blueberry cheesecake that's tucked away in a small pot that you eat with a mini shovel, and their seasonal sorbet which was creamy and refreshing. Without a doubt, they have made their mark on the vegan food scene and we are not 'missing out' on anything when food is simply this good and good for you. Reservations are HIGHLY recommended. I made a reservation through tabe-log as well as messaged the business on Facebook. The manager Hitomi-san was super friendly and fun to chat with about the business, and it left a wonderful impression on me to return in the future. I cannot stop raving about my experience at Saido. Thank you Chef Kusumoto, Hitomi-san, and your entire team for this amazing lunch. I will do my best to come back every time I plan a trip to Tokyo.

Yelp
What a great vegan restaurant with extra friendly staff! I ordered the Sai Mai Sen miso ramen with the faux egg and it was delicious AND beautiful! The faux egg was one of the better versions I've had. It was not mushy and was more gelatinous in texture and pleasant--the yellow part of the "egg" was very tasty too. You have a choice of six noodle types, I went with the ginger noodles and they were not overpowering. I also had the lemon sake and it was very good! I also let the staff talk me into their fancy cheesecake that comes in a planter, which was beautiful AND delicious. I definitely recommend this restaurant!
