Boston Vietnamese Restaurant News | Eater Boston

"Dorchester welcomed a new Vietnamese restaurant that opened at 1035 Dorchester Ave. with a grand opening on June 8; it sits between the Savin Hill and JFK/UMass red line stations, close to Ba Le, and has showcased menu items on social media including grilled squid, chicken with rice, jackfruit salad, and fresh orange juice." - Eater Staff

The clams very bad, you can even smell it very stink. They shouldn’t be serve with the dead and extremely bad food to the customer. I ordered one dozen of the white clams and 4 is bad already, we ate the 8 okay one. But after few hours I got diarrhea for 8 times, it like food poisoning. We ate there all the time, but lately this place is horrible serving bad food to their customers. We not gonna go back anymore, we don’t want food poisoning again. If you don’t want to get food poisoning, just stay away from this restaurant.

Google
Very disappointed. Any one had fresh lobster knows the meat always comes out in one piece. But the Lobster here was dry and sticks to the shell. Add $9 for the Noodles and they were soggy! Spent $250+ and definitely wasn’t worth it. Any Chinese restaurant in Quincy is far better than here.

Google
Good food for a fair price. The rice was a bit dry. Good service. Had the spring rolls, fish soup, caramelized fish and orange chicken.

Google
Everything else was good, but I’m not someone who usually leaves bad reviews. However, one of the staff members was very rude to us. She didn’t greet us when taking the order, and when serving the food, I said “thank you,” but she didn’t respond. Instead, she just threw the food on the table and walked away, showing a very bad attitude. I understand that the job can be tiring, but that doesn’t mean you should be rude to customers. We are still your guests, and respect matters. I will not come back to a place with such an unwelcoming environment.

Google
Everything I've ordered here so far has been spot on! This is a relatively new (at least in the last 10 years since I've come back to Dorchester) vietnamese restaurant. The staff are always really friendly and offer iced tea right when you get in and sit down. I ordered the salt toasted pork chop plate which was huge. The pork chops are super moist and crispy when you take a bite and the portion size is huge. The grilled chicken with rice reminded me of my childhood. The chicken was cooked perfectly and seasoned well. Their salt toasted squid and soft shell crabs are great if you love seafood and calamari style dishes. Just be aware that they can be a bit spicy, so make sure you let them know if you want it mild. Adding pork chops to that dish will run you an extra $6, but it's a huge plate. I also loved their spring rolls and garlic snow pea leaves. They absolutely love up to any Chinese restaurant in quality and flavor. Their fried tofu and fixed vegetables are also solid dishes if you're going vegetarian. Overall some dishes can be a little pricey if you custard customizing dishes, but the portion sizes definitely make up for it.

Google
Yes, the food is very good, very, very delicious, if you like Vietnamese food, this is your place, but parking is a little complicated, it is located on Dorchester in Dorche, there is not much parking, but you can find it if you drive around. And they only have two tables in the place, almost everything is takeout orders and food in view like a buffet and comfortable for your wallet.

chris W.

Google
This place is pretty good I've been here plenty of times. I've had different foods pretty good it's okay

Ellen

Google
Food was very good. I enjoyed the variety that they had. Also very well priced.

Yelp
This has become one of our favorite Vietnamese restaurants to go to lately. If you're looking for a family style dinner, this is the spot. For the price and portion, I highly recommend coming here. Low key, their Bun Mam is probably one of the best around Dorchester. Full of every ingredients that is normally included . A lot of places tend to be missing one ingredient here and there. Service can be a little annoying sometimes depending on who is there. Our last time there, we had a young gentleman that looked like he knew what he was doing. He didn't write down our order and got everything right. But, we did only order 3 dishes. The other table ordered about 6-7 dishes and he didn't write it down and messed it all up. Lol But, this happens a lot when it gets a little too much. Don't get ahead of yourself lol Overall, I never had an issue here so will definitely come back!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is quite a disgrace. Take a quick moment and look at the picture I have included. Sit and take a good guess on how much this should be. I don't recall ordering Waygu beef, so this should be around 15-20 dollars at best right? No, this was 27 dollars for a box with the amount of beef I can count on my fingers. I get the bad economy but this is a joke. Now if this beef had me twinkling, it be a different story, but this is Saigon one we're talking about. Looks like the chef ate half my food before it got send out. Beef was mediocre at best. Overall, I won't be ordering take out here again.

Yelp
A group of us came and did a family style meal. We got fried chicken (canh ga chien), salted spicy capelin (Ca Bong Trung Rang Muoi), salted spicy crab and squid, and sweet and sour catfish hotpot (Lau Canh Chua Ca Bong Lau). Everything was great: I would recommend the salted spicy crab and squid and sweet and sour catfish hotpot (comes with vermicelli noodles and vegetables, and use the fish sauce to dip the fish in (and other items if you want)) The restaurant is on the smaller size compared to other Vietnamese restaurants in the area, with only two servers at the time. But they definitely worked hard and were great.

Yelp
As a Vietnamese, I think the food here, flavors are similar to the one that I have tried back in VietNam. So if you are looking for authentic Viet dishes, this restaurant is for you. However, I would not get Banh Cảnh Cua, solely because I can't taste or see any crab meats. The restaurant is a little small, but definitely have spaces for dine in. The food come out pretty fast, and the staffs here are really nice. They make sure you have everything you need as quick as possible.
google avatar

Christine T.

Yelp
Let me tell you, one of the best viet places around. It's not one of your stereotypical pho places with 2 other dishes. These are viet dishes.Banh Canh Cua, Bun Rieu, Ca Bong Trung Rang Muoi... 110% would come back.

Julie S.

Yelp
The spicy salty fried soft shell crab is absolutely delicious. It is precisely as advertised. VERY spicy and VERY salty if that is what you are craving! You can ask to have it customized ie less or no spice. But it is a treat!
google avatar

Yelp
I love their salt and pepper chicken. They are always pleasant when I come. Very clean.

Yelp
If you want authentic Vietnamese food, this is definitely one of the best ones in Dorchester. The lobster with ginger scallion or with salt and pepper is very tasty!! They have the tank so the quality of the seafood is good. The owner used to own Saigon Seafood down the street, so they definitely know how to make good food :) I also like their chicken hot pot. It is very unique. They make broth with chicken and lemongrass, and then serve with a lot of veggie. Highly recommended. The place is not that big though. Service is hit and miss, but hey, this is not fine dining.
google avatar

Yelp
Fried chicken with Vietnamese fish sauce was amazing. Can be messy to eat with your hands. The banh canh cua, which is a dense crab soup served with chewy clear udon-like noodles, is tasty. It has crab meat and claw as well as congealed pork blood patty in it. The bun rieu, a noodle soup with a tomato based broth and served with rice noodles, is also good. Though tasty, you will get a sodium boost/rush by the end of the meal. You will feel it in your face (unsure if it's due to MSG). The iced Vietnamese coffee is thick and creamy from the condensed milk. This is exactly how I like my Vietnamese coffee. This is a really small restaurant on Dorchester Avenue. Small groups works better. It can't really accommodate large parties. Also, there is plenty of street parking. Not a special occasion place either but a quick lunch spot. This one is real 3.5 stars, not quite 4 stars. See my pictures.

Yelp
The food is freshly prepared, tasty and delicious. Service is quick and friendly. The ambiance is inviting and relaxing. The establishment is very clean and neat. A definite must try. Grade A+

Yelp
One of the worst dining experiences I've had in awhile. The service here was very poor and we were tended to by multiple people. The correct utensils were not provided and we had to ask for them more than once and I eventually got up and grabbed them myself from a coffee table. An elderly beggar walked in and right up to our table and asked us for money. It wasn't until he approached a second table that the manager gave him some money and ushered him out. As for the food: The bun bo hue tasted like Indian curry. The crab noodle soup had no flavor whatsoever, the noodles were soggy, and the scare bits of crab often had cartilage in it. The drinks were reasonably large and all of the deep fried seafood items were pretty good, if not a bit overly salty.

Yelp
This was my first time trying these dishes and having a family style Vietnamese meal at a restaurant. These dishes were great picks with plenty of flavor. The menu has so much to offer too. I found the food to be a little bit too salty for me but maybe I'm just not used to these flavors yet.

Yelp
Very tasty food! Big portions that were enough for a second meal. I like the Canh Chua Ca Bong Lau (sweet and sour soup with catfish) and the Tom Rang Muoi Co Dau (spicy salted shrimps with full heads & shells) here. The Ca Kho To (caramelized catfish) is good too, though the fish was a bit harder in texture than it should. The Nuoc Chanh Muoi (salted lime drink) was nice and refreshing! Would recommend!

Yelp
Returned to give them another shot. They are much better with handling customer complaints or issues with the food. On a few occasions I noticed there was something on my grilled pork chops they gave me no problems when I told them and when I ordered the same thing they would not charge me. I ordered take out a lot from them during Covid. And now me and my husband have gone and dined in now that we can. The restaurant is very clean, they keep the table 6 feet apart and they have the plexiglas dividers. Staff also wear masks and gloves. The servers are very nice and helpful. The food tastes fresh and there's not a long wait when you order takeout or sit down to eat. I'll continue to go.

Yelp
Because i have to star this I did. But this place is a horror show. They have family hanging around barefoot and another picking his teeth, thoroughly. The was a baby crying. It was chaotic. It took the server more than 10 mins just to bring menus. The water they brought over was good. However the glasses were dirty still with another patrons lip stick. We would not see them again for another 20 mins. We were the only customers in the restaurant. We ordered some appetizers that were flavorless and gamey. So we did not eat any of it. Then they brought out what they considered beef and broccoli. The beef tho coming fresh from the kitchen was cold which made me look thru it and meat was still raw and the sauce tasted like the just made a stew sauce with nothing but soy sauce. My rice wasn't brought out with my meat and when it was it was a small like dish portion. Like the dishes they put sauce in. That's when i had enough and left. I would never step foot in that place again. Nothing here was a good experience.

Yelp
Errmm.. after 4 years, still no improvement. Just like my last visit, 4 years ago, extremely poor service. And the food did not make up for it. Sat down at 830pm with 2 menus. Begged them to take our orders (food and drinks) at 9pm. Got our food at 906pm. Again, Begged them to send our drinks over at 920pm. At 930pm we hollered to get a check. Then we walked up to the register to pay, otherwise we'd have to wait til closing time to ring us up. Left the building at 934pm. Yes, they do sit around and talk to one another and refuse to acknowledge their customers. Yes, they do not care to service you. Yes, they suck at their job. And yes, I am mad at myself to come back here. I did not realize the reason then I saw my previous post and I got an "aha" moment. Slothful and unprofessional services. Food is also at a red light. No go.

Yelp
Friends recommended canh bún here, tried it to go. Loved it, tasted like childhood memory, authentic flavors. I'll be back to try other things. ;)

Yelp
I don't know why this place has bad reviews. I'm from Vietnam and I've have been in Boston for 6 years and I'm kicking myself for not finding out about this restaurant sooner. Everything here taste homemade and traditional. Their dishes are really well made and that's what makes them different from other big restaurants in the area. My favorite is Their Lau Thai but honestly everything on the menu taste amazing in its own way.
google avatar

Deja V.

Yelp
This is the original Saigon seafood which is down on Adams street. It's a downgrade to the other location in size and food. But basically they carry the same menu. You can sit down and eat here since they have the glass panel setup but the quality of the food is not as comparable as Saigon seafood . They don't even have a liquor license here if you're looking for a drink with your meal. The chicken hot pot is one of their best items . The chicken salad and the salted fried chicken also . They do have some exotic and seasonal items like wild boar and deer meat dish. It's good for drinking but downside no liquor License here .

Yelp
Updated 6/7/2017 Today, I was craving for "banh canh cua" thick crab udon soup, so I gave it a try. I normally just get bun rieu here. It is a good choice, the banh canh cua is so good and authentic compares to other banh canh cua I have eaten in Boston area. A bowl has 4 shrimps, 3 big slices of grilled fish, 1 pincer, pork blood and pork. I will try other dishes next time, this is still my favorite place for bun rieu and now banh canh cua. I went there with my bf couple times, waiters and waitresses are very nice, it's small but usually not very busy. This was Thao Ngoc Restaurant, but then they change ownership, I think the food are still taste the same. We mostly get family meals like fish maw and crab, Vietnamese crab thick noodles soup, mixed veggies with garlic, salted spicy shrimp squid soft-shell crab, and grilled clam with scallions and peanut. The prices are reasonable, the food are good. Yesterday, I went there for bún riêu (special vermicelli soup) because my sister told me they have good bun rieu here. And this was boom, it has been a long time since I have that a good bun rieu, they also come with mam tom. I'll come here every time I'm craving for bun rieu.

Yelp
Just ordered their salt and pepper shrimp rice plate, bomb as hell, just good food , the restaurant is low key and no frills
google avatar

Yelp
This place serves the best and most authentic Vietnamese food (according to my Vietnamese boyfriend). The portions are huge and generous, so make sure to share family style. The best: Bun Rieu (Crab Noodle Soup). A concoction of flavors starring tomatoes, crabs, and noodles. It's served with REAL vermicelli noodles (not the thin stuff you find in NYC). Caramelized Catfish & Pork. The caramel sauce is super thick and dense in flavors - sweet, salty, spicy. Pork is fatty and crispy, and the catfish is juicy and tender. This was my favorite dish here. We packed it to go and even tried to make the sauce last as long as possible. The not-as-great-but-still-good: Blood Sausage. I was super excited to try some real Vietnamese sausage at a restaurant, but was let down when they served imitation sausage instead. Granted, it was served with a ton of congealed blood cubes and intestines, which were fresh and went well with shrimp paste dip. We came here on a Sunday evening around 5:45pm. The place was about a third of the way filled, but really started filling up around 6:45-7:00pm. I don't come very often, but I always try to make a trip out here whenever I'm in the Boston area.

Yelp
Recommend,I buy togo food, delicious food, order is picked up quickly and accurately !!!!!!!

Yelp
Foods are okay Service is bad ! Waitress has a government faces We have come there 3 times ! We are out !

Yelp
This is the most authentic Vietnamese restaurant I have been to in Boston. You can tell by the extensive menu of traditional dishes, many not found at other restaurants. This has been my go-to destination for my Vietnamese cravings. Below are the dishes that I have personally tried and recommend: Hu Tieu Mi Kho Mi Vit Tiem Banh Khot Banh Canh Cua Banh Hoi Bun Rieu Goi Oc My only word of caution is that the staff's English speaking skills are not the best, so you may need to pull up pictures to be sure you get exactly what you want. The menu only lists the food, no pictures.

T N.

Yelp
Visited family in Boston and they recommended this spot. Got the stir fry lobster with ginger and scallion on two different occasions, both times were very good. The lobsters were very fresh and was seasoned well. The staff was super friendly and welcoming as well. The restaurant was clean, staff wore masks and there were plastic guards between tables.
google avatar

Lillian W.

Yelp
I tried to give this place a try but their food is cold and stale when I got it. The waiters were not good at handling the situation. I could've gone somewhere else with better service and food.
google avatar

Reese D.

Yelp
Came here for their goat hot pot and it was worth the trek to Dorchester just for the dish. At $39.95 for small and $59.95 for large, the goat hot pot is delish. It's a clear broth goat soup heated with a portable gas stove throughout your meal. Plenty of goat meat to go around even for the small portion. There's also taro, bean curd stick, lotus root and Chinese herbs in it. You get a side of vegetables, noodle and tofu to complete the experience. Thumbs up on that dish. Also worthy is the chicken salad $20.95 for half a chicken. Perfect to share for a party of four. We also have yellow chives stir fried with conch. At $35+, it's alright but not memorable. Definitely come here for the goat hot pot. Ambience is lackluster but you are here for the food. Street parking, so be prepared to fight for a spot.

Yelp
Im writing this for the newest owner. They changed their name to Saigon One now. I decided to try this place because THEY DELIVER and after looking at their menu online their minimum for delivery is only $10 . They also have tons of different kind of vietnamese food, some very traditional plates. When I called on the phone the lady was extremely nice and patient (my instructions are very complicated). Everytime my orders arrive it's always perfect, just like I ask for in my instructions. Their prices and foods are great, and the service is amazing! I order out almost everyday, and this place by far is the best with their customer service! This is my go to place from now on!

Victoria F.

Yelp
This place SUCKS. Meant to order from the Saigon Seafood on Adams and it was the biggest mistake!!!! Ordered Ginger lobster (not fried). The person I was talking to on the phone said they usually only fry all their seafood so I was confused why steaming wasn't an option. They accommodated me but that wasn't a good choice either. The lobster was extremely wet. Barely had ANY ginger. One taste and I knew something was wrong. The lobster had a taste of old boiled water and it was definitely not fresh. I feel like I might have gotten the left overs or something like that since I ordered right before I closed. $32 wasted because I don't have time to play the food poisoning game!
google avatar

Cindy T.

Yelp
I love this place! Me and my boyfriend always goes here for our dates. We always order their famous lobsters meal, it's a bit pricey but worth it it's salty just like how I like it. It's very tasty and addictive to eat. Food comes out very quick too! My bf tried the lobsters from Saigon Seafood and he didn't like it , I made him tried it again from here and that's when he suddenly loves it! that's when you know it's good. Also This place Is very clean, and their waitresses are so nice and sweet! You must give this place a try!

Lan L.

Yelp
Bad service, worse food ever . I don't know how they can get so many good reviews. Maybe their families have them reviewed I wonder.

Yelp
One star given for parking. Horrible service. No tea no menu sitting here waiting. Servers are doing there own thing until being spoken out... can we get some service here????

Yelp
This has become one of my most favorite places. The waiters and waitresses are really friendly and I recommend you try the Canh Bun and Ngheu Nuong Mo Hanh as they are me and my gf's favorite dishes. Even though it is such a small restaurant but the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Highly recommended for those who one to try real Vietnamese food!

Yelp
I have never been to restaurant, but did order quite a lot from here for delivery. It was easy using the online app and delivery is very quick. Food is pretty decent, similar to other vietnamese food in the area. We usually order simple rice and noodle dishes such as bun thit nuong or com ba mau, nothing fancy. I will continue to order from here, but definitely expand the options.

Yelp
"I don't care" "I am not sure what the people on Yelp are talking about" Those are the only phrases my mind wanted to compute when I went here for dinner earlier. I have had PLENTY of Vietnamese food in my life and this is HIGH on the list of disappointments. Let's begin with the glass of water that they brought me...it tasted like it had been run through a dirty beer tap. My roomie ordered a coconut shake and was told there were out of that and all they had was avocado. Apparently they have a mango tree in the kitchen because he came back a few minutes later to tell her they were out of avocado and they had mango. I ordered fresh rolls and the sweet and spicy chicken wings for an appetizer. and roomie got the egg rolls. Nothing was too impressive. Sure, they were edible, but no more than any other place I have ever randomly stepped into. I hate when I am not given peanut sauce with my fresh rolls and I get hoisin, so that put a damper on my mood as well. I ordered the duck noodle soup with bamboo for my entree.and it would have been okay if I was in the mood to drink warm water that was completely devoid of flavor, but I wasn't. There was a good amount of duck and it was cooked well, but I am still searching for even the scantest iota of seasoning. Can I get some lemongrass, garlic, onion or something...wtf. My roomie got the loc lac and I felt so bad I wanted to hug her and sing her a lullaby. It was random chunks of beef in a watered down random sauce that resembled the watery gravy from KFC. That was accompanied by rice and soy sauce that was filled with jalapeno slices. Well there was a good point here,,,,,the rice was nice and white and cooked....yep...that is the best compliment she could muster for this travesty. By this time I was convinced I was in a Vietnamese food Twilight Zone so I was ready to pay and get the hell out of this place. I love how I was told later that the price of my soup had changed and they forgot to tell me when I ordered it. That is fine...I had a great time removing that dollar from the tip I was leaving. As I left the restaurant and almost busted my fat ass on the steps due to the shitty construction on the stairs I silently cried and wished I had headed to Pho Countryside in Quincy like I planned to.. NEVER AGAIN!!!!

Yelp
Only good if you speak vietnamese, had fish sauce chicken wings here before and they were great with my viet friend, went back there and ordered 2 orders again (speaking english) and they gave me basically bones and fish sauce (they cut the meat part out of the chicken wings! Very messed up. If you dont speak vietnamese, dont bother coming here as they will serve you crap food. I attached a picture of the "chicken wings" with the meat part cut out, leaving only the end pieces

Yelp
Superb food, and excellent customer service. The lady said thanks to me like 5 times when I left. Definitely give the Vietnamese style Calamari a try, worth your pennies

Yelp
BEST VIETNAMESE RESTAURANT! Authentic food, great customer service, basically anything on the menu is great. Highly recommend!!!!!

Yelp
I must say it is the best Vietnamese restaurant I have been in the States. unbeatable. I have visited it 4 times in the past 10 days (I am not even living in Dorchester area). Authentic Vietnamese food. Great customer service!!

Yelp
We ordered the following to be delivered: Beef Noodle Soup with Sliced Rare Beef, Eye Round, Tendon and Tripe: Pieces arrived separate which when combined just made it hard to eat - the noodles were a literal brick) Salted and Spicy Chicken Wings: Um these were not wings. These were chicken parts. These were literally inedible because there were so many bones. Fresh Spring Rolls: These were good - and we liked the peanut sauce that came with it. Stir-Fried Flat Rice Noodle with Sliced Chicken: While tasty, half the noodles were dry. The result? Outside of the spring rolls, everything went in the trash. What a waste.

Yelp
A Vietnamese friend recommended this to me. We got the fried shrimp with mayo, the pea pods, and some pad thai. They gave us a generous portion of shrimp and the sweet mayo sauce was amazing. Definitely going to have to take the time to sit down here next time and not just do take out. Seems like there are so many other tasty dishes to try.

Yelp
This is a bad restaurant The food is bad and unprofessional service as well as no parking.

Yelp
The delivery was on time, but the food is not good. I order the rice, the pho and the soup. It's was the worst pho I have ever eat in a vietnamese restaurant, and I'm vietnamese myself. The rice and chicken were old, the soup of meat ball were very salty and the meat ball is so tough to chew like a gum ball. The pho was the worst I never eat the pho so salty in my life, I will never ever order from this place again.
google avatar

Yelp
This restaurant gave me the worst customer service ever. I ordered food for delivery, they took more than an hour to deliver to my house although it's just 0.5 miles away. They even forgot my desert order. When I called back the restaurant to ask about it the woman told me that she would give me that desert next time, with an attitude I could feel through her voice. How does she know that I would order from them next time OR NOT. The mistake should be made up but she didn't even apologize to me. At least they made the 2nd trip to deliver but took almost another hour. Will never order food from here again!

Binh N.

Yelp
Small place but the owner and staff are all nice and friendly. My favorite is the Lau Gà hàm Xa.

Jules H.

Yelp
I am very disappointed with this restaurant's fried lobster. I spent almost $80.00 on a triple fried lobster and a one size shrimp lo-mein. I've gotten it a couple of times before and they were juicy and favorable. Unfortunately, these lobsters were dry and you can tell they were fried in day old or so grease. I work hard for my money and I do not like for any restaurants to take advantage just because they think they can. We do not check the food till we arrive home and if we do complain, what are the odds of them really satisfying us and refrying other lobsters in fresh grease so i decided to take my review to yelp and hopefully it'll help some people to check the food before leaving.

Yelp
The food was good, however the environment on Friday night is too much!!! I meant many people talking out loud. The chopsticks weren't clean, so i used the disposable one!!
