Spencer Brewery – Spencer, Massachusetts - Gastro Obscura

"St. Joseph’s Abbey, located in Spencer, Massachusetts, was founded in 1950. The monks that founded the abbey were forced to move from their previous home in Rhode Island after a fire. In the tradition of Trappist monks, they started a business to support themselves. Within a few years of their arrival in Spencer, Trappist Preserves was born. The first batch of jelly was made in 1954 by one of the brothers on a stove, with herbs taken from their own garden. Today, the monks produce 30 flavors of jams and jellies. In Europe, Trappists have maintained a long and respected tradition of brewing. In 2010, the monks of St. Joseph’s Abbey began looking into founding their own brewery to continue this tradition. They embarked on a two-year fact-finding mission, visiting every other Trappist brewery in the world, meeting the brewers and sampling their beers. They came back with a plan: Build a modern, state-of-the-art facility, hire a skilled brewer, and make only one beer for the first five years. Following monastic traditions, the monks held a vote and overwhelming decided to build the first Trappist brewery in the United States. After many test batches, they had their first finished beer: a blonde ale called Spencer Trappist Ale, which they still brew. In 2013, Spencer Brewery was recognized as the first (and so far only) Trappist brewery outside of Europe. While the brewery is normally not open to the public, it does open its doors once a year at an open house in June. Know Before You Go Their website says that they have decided to shut down the brewery business." - photomck, mattferrao75, tehutika

Very peaceful place. Everyone who lives a busy life should stop by and listen to the monks praying the Psalms in plainchant. Very relaxing! Very spiritual! They pray 7 times a day.

I came here for a retreat to do some deep heavy reflecting and to get closer to God & strengthen my relationship with God. We are very fortunate to have this monastery near by. People from all over the world come to the Abbey. The brothers and fathers are profoundly passionate and display a vast level of wisdom well beyond their years.

A peaceful, amazing place to just drive up for a day, park in the guest area and walk the area permitted. Everything is clearly marked. Check the schedule and sit in on some of the the prayer times or mass and hear the singing. No matter your background, it’s peaceful and centering. The monks also make beer, jams and jellies, pottery, and sometimes honey or other items and well as incense and their vestments—you can visit the showroom.

The stillness is meditative. I see other cars, but no one around anywhere. It’s wonderful.

My sanctuary in Massachusetts... Where the monks live! You can go to one of their many vigils throughout the day, in the visitors chapel. Beautiful land... Great place to meditate and pray. The Trappists monks have a lovely gift shop! And if you are lucky you get to meet monks at gift shop ..

I donated a bird feeder to the monastery So I go there once a week to fill the feeder I have documented over 17 different types of birds. Besides all the different types of animals the place is breathtaking. Plenty of hiking trails .the place is magical.

Yelp
Nice setting and we heard some of the songs/chants, but weren't allowed in most of the church or a lot of the grounds. It's an interesting but very dimly lit building due to the dark stained glass. Felt kind of medieval. The jam is good - didn't try the candies. Lots of books and religious objects for sale not interesting to me as a non believer.

Yelp
Saint Joseph's Abbey is a community of Trappist monks living a 'contemplative life of work and prayer.' They offer information on how to become a monk, offer retreats and information on how you can come by to visit, check out their writings, access excerpts from the abbey's monastic forebears, offer a selection of their hand-made preserves, as well as shopping at the Holy Rood Guild that provides fine tailoring of liturgical vestments/chasubles/copes/stoles/dalmatics/funeral sets/albs/plain vesture/insense/linens. I am a huge fan of their preserves - they are known to continue a traditiion of refining their recipes and techniques in producing each batch of their preserves. They make each batch in accordance to the monastic tradition of excellence; fruit is harvested at the peak of freshness. They have a variety of flavors: apricot, apricot-pineapple, blackberry seedless, blueberry, boysenberry seedless, burgundy wine, cherry, concord grape, damson plum, elderberry, ginger preserve, hot pepper, Kadota fig, lemon marmalade, peach, cranberry pepper, mango pepper, pomegranate, port wine, quince, red currant, red raspberry with seeds and without seeds, rhubarb-orange, rhubarb-strawberry, Seville orange, sherry wine, strawberry, sweet orange marmalade, and cranberry conserve. My favorite is the strawberry as it contains two kinds of strawberries - one for the taste, and one for its texture. I love the chunks of strawberries throughout - it's fresh, it's lovely, and great to use for sandwiches and all your jam needs. Love love LOVE! :D +Strawberry preserves :D

Yelp
The landscape was absolutely breathtaking. My husband and I stopped through here on our anniversary weekend, and it was stunning. We were able to go inside the church to sit and say a prayer, and the gift shop had a lot to offer. They have the Trappist products in the shop if you'd like to buy any! It's nothing you'd spend a day at, but definitely beautiful and sacred enough to stop by.

So we finally made it back to area and I'm loaded up for the winter now. Just hope the wife n kids don't find my hiding spot.
