"Originally built as an arts and culture “palace” for the 1904 World’s Fair, the Saint Louis Art Museum is now home to approximately 34,000 objects spanning 5,000 years of history and culture. On display are works by Henri Matisse, Vincent van Gogh, John McCrady, and Georgia O’Keeffe, as well as the world’s largest collection of paintings by German artist Max Beckmann and a robust selection of African and Egyptian art. The museum also features rotating installations and exhibitions, including the Current and New Media Series, which presents works by living artists in new media formats. Admission is free and complimentary, and hour-long docent tours are available daily."

The French cars and art exhibition was interesting. We enjoyed seeing early Bugattis. They've come a long way. The exhibition provided an excellent educational opportunity about the Roaring 20s for my son. The regular exhibits are always great too!

Google
Unique and interesting exhibits. Nicely organized. Expansive! Staff and volunteers helpful, friendly, and observant yet unobtrusive. Visiting St Louis and we chose to come here twice because we didn't see all that we wanted too see - still didn't have enough time to see everything. And although there may be a small fee for special exhibits (waived on Fridays)... it's free to the public!

Google
Wow! I love St Louis! What other city would have such an amazing art museum and let you see it for FREE? Paintings, statues, cars, furniture, exquisite dishes, huge bells and weapons, tiny items, whole rooms with art from different countries and cultures - both modern and ancient... it has all that and more! I can't believe I haven't visited it before! There were so many levels, we couldn't see it all in one day. I HIGHLY recommend the St Louis Art Museum. ❤️

Khrystyna Prokhorenko

Google
The museum offers free admission. My understanding was it would only allow me to explore limited exhibits, but I was definitely wrong! There is a lot to see in the three-story building. We tried to cram our experience in 2 hours, that was not enough! It became overwhelming after a while. Highly recommend taking a break at the restaurant, on the lower level. There is a lot to see and learn from art, sculptures, and cultural objects. Our middle schooler was excited to see the Meso American exhibit, as they recently covered it in social studies. Great place for all ages! I'm sure even smaller kids will find joy in colorful art,!

Google
Visited on a Friday morning. Was able to snag a free parking slot which are very hard to come by. Saw only about a third of the exhibits. Very lucky that STL has a museum like this available for free. While not very extensive, theres a very unique collection of exhibits across the Continents with focus on European and American art. Will definitely visit again

Google
Roaring exhibit was awesome! Seeing the connection between car design and fashion was really neat. The loose parts invitation for children to make their own hood ornaments was my favorite!

Rachael McDonald

Google
Lots of different art from different times and places. Paintings, pottery, clothing... My favorite was the little side rooms that showcased what a room would look like in a certain place in a certain time - but be careful! If you slide your hand past the railing, you'll set off an alarm! The balcony was a great place to take in the orchestra that was playing while we visited. Take advantage of the free Fridays for extra exhibits that would normally be an extra fee.

Google
This place is great and actually free! I saw all ages enjoying themselves, from kiddos to cute older couples smiling! It was hard not to find something stunning in the 3 floors. Just don't forget, stay behind the line...they are watching 😉

Yelp
There's so much fine art here, they really respect the safety of these installations and that's fantastic! The place is soo big and art after art there is. Pamphlets and other brochures were available and staff was so helpful. Not just the inside, but the outside is also gorgeous. I love how it's free, other than the cafe and the gift shop, and value is great here! I love art museums, every one i've been to is so glamorous and this one is no exception.
google avatar

Yelp
I always appreciate when the finer things in life are made accessible to everyone-regardless of ability to pay a high ticket price. The Saint Louis Art Museum is as accessible as it comes-free admission to everyone! The art inside is just as stunning as the building that it's in. I could spend hours in here admiring the different works and meandering through the various halls. There's so much to see! Even outside, there's a modest sculpture garden worthy of a morning stroll. If you need a little culture in your life, be sure to make a plan to visit. It won't cost you anything!

Yelp
Free museum that covers three floors of exhibits. We saw everything - and it took over 5 hours!. I liked starting on the lowest floor and seeing various period rooms, then going up to the 3rd floor (which is the smallest area), then closing on the 2nd floor (which is where you enter). There's a cafe inside with a good variety of lunch choices. There are quite a few volunteers that are helpful. We covered close to five miles in the building along with the sculpture garden. It is easy to skip a section that is of lesser interest. There is a very wide variety of art - can satisfy nearly everyone.

Yelp
One of the St. Louis' real treasures. To be able to surround myself with roomful after roomful of gorgeous art is truly one of my favorite things about living in the area. The museum is located in beautiful Forest Park, and overlooks the majestic Grand Basin at the bottom of snow-sledding landmark Art Hill. Admission is free for all, with the exception of certain special exhibits throughout the year. However, on Fridays, the museum has extended hours and free admission to all exhibits (SLAM is closed on Mondays). Do yourself a favor - head to the St. Louis Art Museum, and get a little art in your life

Yelp
Exquisite and free. This museum is absolutely beautiful, great famous artists, wonderful staff, and if you have the time take a walk or just hangout outside... there's a beautiful lake adjacent.

Yelp
I have stayed here all my life and never been here. This museum is awesome. Private FREE parking. Admission FREE!! Building clean and clear of clutter. Staff very friendly and welcoming . I came to see the African American art and exhibits and and I was not disappointed. Very informative. Spaced just right. Spacious and well designed. All Art work and statues were very colorful and cool masterpieces. 3 levels of greatness. Dine in restaurants overpriced and food selection not impressive. Overall I really enjoyed it here!

Yelp
Went Friday night since they're open until 9pm. I was amazed at the Van Goghs and Picassos that were on display. We used the underground parking which made it very convenient and safe. We have a great time.

Yelp
We LOVE the St Louis Art Museum. My kids ask to go there all the time. We love seeing the main stays, but also all the new stuff they bring out. This year we went to Art in Bloom, and WOW it was awesome. We will be going back every year!!
google avatar

Norman L.

Yelp
Went to the first Art Night Out which is something new SLAM is doing this year. Started out at the Kemper Art Museum and finished at SLAM. Very interesting discussion of German Expressionism art and the potential hidden or Concealed Layers that are found on the backs or sometimes painted over other images. A bit of ethics, science and art all rolled into one night. We really enjoyed the speakers and the subject and the food and drink were very nice as well. Great job SLAM!
google avatar

Justine S.

Yelp
A lovely museum! It's not too crowded and decently sized that you can spend a really great afternoon wandering around and soaking up the art. There's something for everyone, pieces from different art mediums and time periods. The cherry on top is the free parking and admission!
google avatar

Yelp
I've probably reviewed St. Louis art Museum 10 times. Consistent themes include we have a very underrated art museum. Some of the best exhibits in the world come to our art museum. The pictures I'm uploading on this review is of Art in Bloom. It comes in March every year for about 2 to 3 days. Florist create flower arrangements depicting an artwork. It's amazing. It gets better and better every year.
google avatar

Yelp
Matisse and the Sea was today's exhibit. The museum is excellent with many offering's much more extensive than I would have thought. Also the central panel of Water Lillies is here. I spent some time taking that one in. It is as enjoyable as any museum that I have been in and much less crowded than similar museums in larger cities. There is of course the standard cafe and restaurant attached. Definitely worth a look if you are in town. Mark.

Yelp
I always love the art museum and this visit I got engaged, so really what's not to love. A world class institution for FREE in my city. It's the first place I take friends when they visit. Enjoy some of our favorite works and their descriptions.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best art museums I've ever been to and THE BEST free art museum I've ever visited in the US thus far. We stayed in Forest Park, so this was very convenient for us to get to. I also recommend the $15 parking garage, as street parking will be difficult to find, especially late morning early afternoon. While the museum is free, the special exhibits have nominal fees. We bought tickets for the immersive impressionism experience at $12/each. We spent several hours here and could have stayed longer. Cafe on the premises, so you really don't have to leave. We missed the sculpture garden because of he heat, but would love to see it on a return visit. An absolute must-see when you're in St. Louis.

Yelp
Visiting the art museum was a delightful way to spend our day, especially since the admission was free. As we navigated through the wide array of exhibits, we were impressed by the diverse and extensive collection on display. Unfortunately, our experience was marred slightly by an unfriendly host at the entrance, which dampened our initial excitement. Additionally, the museum's strict policy on water bottles, even empty ones, was inconvenient, though we appreciated that the coat check service was complimentary. Despite these minor setbacks, the richness of the museum's offerings made for an enjoyable and culturally enriching day.

Yelp
The Saint Louis Art Museum is an amazing place to visit in Forest Park. The collection of art the museum has is astounding. They have art from Monet, Rockwell, Lewis and so many more artists. They have art from all different decades and are constantly adding new art. They even have mummies. The museum is huge and you can spend a lot of time here. They offer guided tours or you can go at your own pace. The unbelievable part is that the museum is 100% free!

Yelp
The museum was easily accessible, and I was able to find free street parking, which was a pleasant surprise. Inside, the diverse collections of art were awe-inspiring, with more pieces than I could fully appreciate in one visit. The staff was exceptionally kind and polite, even the sculpture park behind was grand and added to the overall experience. The sheer amount of creativity on display was truly inspiring. I highly recommend this museum to anyone looking for a dose of culture and inspiration.

Yelp
Free admission and the $15 parking is good for however long you want to take to visit the art museum, the zoo (just down the hill), or take a walk in Forest part. Tons of galleries to get lost in. Well known artists and the obligatory nude statues with little bitty p3nises. Not sure I'll ever understand why sculptors did this... Personally I'd make them like the size of baseball bats... That way if a staue tipped it would catch it like a tripod. Lol It was a good place to get warmed back up after walking around the zoo on a 20s F early March day. Enjoy exploring St Louis!

Yelp
Near the St. Louis zoo and worth a trip over. Also FREE which is awesome for all to enjoy--so enjoy!

Yelp
This is not my first time at the museum but I couldn't even tell you how many times I've been over the 31 years of living in St. Louis. I love that it's free and it's open reign on where you want to start and end. During this most recent visit, I had the pleasure of trying out their cafe. I had an Americano coffee with half and half and my friend and I shared a massive cinnamon roll at the start of our adventure in SLAM. After we had our breakfast, we explored the exhibits and was surpringsly met with the beautiful voices of the Milliken University Choir as we ascended to the main level. The acoustics were beyond amazing! After we listened to the impromptu show by the choir, we walked around a bit more before grabbing lunch. I ordered a Turkey Bahn Mi and a fruit cup. I ended up saving the fruit for later. The Turkey Bahn Mi was good considering it was from a cafe. I know the next time I visit SLAM, I will dine at the cafe again!

Yelp
I was impressed by the Saint Louis Art Museum - especially since it was free! There is a garage you can pay to park in but there was also a free lot nearby. The museum itself is large with multiple levels and lots of different collections to view. The lady behind the information desk near the entrance was very nice and gave us a quick rundown of the collections plus a map. Not only are the collections great, but the main building itself is very cool and apparently was left from an old Worlds Fair. I would definitely recommend checking it out and of course, making a donation if you're able!

Yelp
Art! Lots and lots of art! I have said in other reviews that I have this impression that the really good art in America is only in New York and Washington. I love being proven wrong and wow, was I wrong here. This museum is amazing. I spent over an hour in the impressionists area enjoying the exact sort of art that I really love. Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, Léger, Chagall, Munch. There was a Degas that I fell in love with (Ballet Dancers in the Wings) and I bought a print of that one that survived the journey home to Charlotte. P{iet Mondrian's "Chrysanthemum" drawing was simply marvelous. What impressionist museum is complete without a van Gogh - they have his pen and ink and pencil drawing of "Fishing Boats at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer". Monet's "The Promenade with the Railroad Bridge, Argentuil" was perfection. Oh, and lots of other Renaissance art and Asian art and American art. Sure, that. But I wanted Impressionists and got them in spades. The museum was uncrowded today and masks were required. Admission is free and parking is free. You have no excuse. [Review 17249 overall - 154 in Missouri - 766 of 2022.]

Yelp
Yet another beautiful place to visit and once again free! Located in Forest Park this is an incredible place to see beautiful art of all types and genres. They typically have a couple of paid exhibitions on if you choose but there is more than enough to see with just the free tour. They also have a beautiful outdoor sculpture garden and art around the building itself as well. Super awesome place can't wait to visit again and see more!
google avatar

Alexander C.

Yelp
This is a great museum overall. It is a MUST SEE. It's free, has great exhibits, & the architecture/atmosphere of the building is breathtaking. Large spaces & tall Roman columns make you feel like you're in a truly special area for art. The cafe was pretty meh, sorry ! But it feels like it was just an afterthought, I get hospital vibes from it.

Emma C.

Yelp
Emergency medical care was excellent, glass doors a little too clean. And the art was nice too. Got a little too excited about the Native American Art of the 20th Century exhibit that I could see in the next gallery and walked face-first into a glass door. Nothing broken but it was a bit messy. Museum staff arrived quickly, stopped the bleeding, and cleaned up both my face and the floor efficiently and compassionately. Once that was sorted, we very much enjoyed exploring the beautiful collections.
google avatar

Derrick G.

Yelp
This is an excellent art museum. The museum has artwork, sculptures and artifacts from countless generations around the world. Numerous art areas are represented, as well as unique displays of actual Egyptian mummies and weapons over 500 years old. This is a great way to spend the day and the museum is free.
google avatar

Yelp
A great option if you're looking for something fun to do in STL is the art museum! It's free and you could easily spend a few hours here as there are lots of pieces to see and a nice cafe!
google avatar

Yelp
St. Louis kills it with its free museums and St. Louis Art Museum, or SLAM, is no different. First time here and wish I came sooner because the collections here are quite wild and the fact that you can view everything for free is just the cherry on top. Here are my favorite things: - It's free! I feel like it's probably extremely difficult to find this quality of an art museum that is open to the public for free anywhere else in the world. - I really appreciate their modern art collection. A lot of these are continuations or collections that are featured in other big art museums like SF MOMA so it was cool to see that they also had some of the collection. - There's really something for everyone from the Asian art/artifact collection to impressionistic work. - I also really appreciate its location overlooking Art Hill and the lake. Makes for a nice stroll after your visit. - The space is huge and doesn't make you feel claustrophobic while looking at art which many smaller galleries/museums do. Overall a fantastic experience and can't wait to come back again for its rotating collections. Honestly, props to City of St. Louis for having this museum accessible to everyone.

Yelp
SLAM (St Louis Art Museum) underground is a rare night time event with live music, demonstrations, food, drinks, art exhibits, souvenir shopping, and fun. No age restriction. Parking is difficult with only 2 small free parking lots. We paid $10 for garage parking to avoid the cold and the crowd. We purchased "the souvenir adult cup with a lid" for all our drinks because of the promise we could take it into the museum. That was a lie. We were scolded by security for walking out to our car with souvenirs and our cups full of soda. We were also not allowed to enter any museum space without the cups being emptied. It is a fun place to visit at night. Lots of security. Expect crowds, lots of rules, long lines, and some cool art.

Adrian W.

Yelp
Very impressive overall. Staff we encountered very pleasant and helpful. Just an amazing collection 'and' a Matisse exhibition which was perfect. Location and building itself could not have been better suited. Certainly recommend. The visit for us was the highlight of our visit to the city.

Yelp
I love going to museums, so I naturally had to visit when I was in St Louis on a work trip. I met some family friends there for brunch at their cafe, and then two of us went to look at the art. What a beautiful museum! I'm glad I went. And it's in close proximity to their zoo.

Chonelle B.

Yelp
The Free Friday's Slam Social was a nice laid back event with cocktails, snacks and art
google avatar

Emily D.

Yelp
Free Free Free, the parking, the admission, and the vibes! This museum is EXTENSIVE. Three floors of lots and lots of interesting things to see and read. They had all types from all over the world and many different time periods. There was definitely time and care taken to make the experience organized and enjoyable. If you're in the St Louis Area, i would definitely recommend checking it out. You could definitely spend a whole day here. We didnt even see it all and stayed for at least 3 hours. The park its in is also lovely and could be enjoyed before or after as well!
google avatar

Jonah M.

Yelp
The best art museum ever and it's free! This offers some amazing pieces and good times.
google avatar

Amber J.

Yelp
Highly suggest going early as it is less crowded and you can take your time walking around. There is so much to see, it could take multiple trips. We went this morning and probably only covered half of that!

Monkey

Yelp
The paintings and art pieces were pretty and cool and it was nice to learn about cultures and artists but the staff was rude other then that I liked it.

Beanie K.

Yelp
Excellent selection of art. It was disappointing that the exhibition downstairs called "Culture" was blaring loud music. They should not do this for exhibits, consider providing headphones to guests. Moorea Atkins said, "While some say that museums lack creative engagement, the opposite is true. The silence in the museums gives you time to slow down and reflect. Good art is controversial and powerful, and sometimes all you can do is sit there and stare. ".
google avatar

Madison M.

Yelp
Huge museum with various styles of art and various mediums. We saw a few Van Gogh pieces, which was unexpected and so cool! General admission is free and there is a special rotating exhibit you can view for a fee - it was $10 when we went, but we had been given free tickets at our hotel. Personally thought it was interesting, but definitely not necessary to enjoy your time here. Gift shop mostly has generic items. Super friendly and helpful employees! Definitely worth a few hours of your trip - I recommend coming here and the zoo the same day since they are both free and inside the park!
google avatar

Mrs L.

Yelp
We were pressed for time, so didn't go in. I still recommend it. It's a beautiful building outside, so I know it's beautiful inside. Plus, there is so much to do nearby.
google avatar

Liz T.

Yelp
This is a beautiful art museum in Forest Park. Free admission . There was a special native Indian art exhibit. I enjoyed spending time looking at the collection of Indian modern artwork. I enjoyed the outdoor sculpture garden and was happy to see Henry Moore sculptures. Loved the landscaping. It was a hot day and tried not to be in the direct sun for long. There were so many exhibitions inside I ran out of time. Definitely a place I would revisit in the future.

Yelp
The Saint Louis Art Museum is easily one of my favorite attractions in STL. There are countless things to love about it, but here are just a few from my perspective: It's free: as someone from Atlanta, this is a majorly huge deal. The idea that such a wonderful attraction with new things to appreciate year round is free, is completely wild to me. Just because it's free, does not mean the quality is less than to be desired. Like any other art museum, there is a collection of fine art pieces that are present year round with additional unique exhibits that can be explored whenever they are in! One of my favorites in the past was the history of photography exhibit; where you got to see just how incredibly photography has progressed in the last few centuries. There is art from all around the world and all eras. So much so that they need 3 separate floors to house it all. The museum staff is extremely friendly and helpful. This being one of the many STL attractions that I have frequented frequently, I sometimes still find myself at a loss for what exactly I want to visit when I arrive. However, the staff are always great about telling me what's new, what's been catching the eye of other recent visitors, and what some of their favorites are. They have adapted amazingly to COVID. Mask required inside for all patrons, and all staff require masks inside at all times. The total number of indoor visitors is limited to allow for proper social distancing. Plenty of hand sanitizing stations throughout the museum. They have also limited access to certain interactive exhibits to minimize fomite transfer. An truly beautiful place to spend the day with the family, friends, partner, or oneself (which I have to say, is my favorite). Can't wait to continue visiting during my time in STL and I look forward to seeing what they have in store next.
google avatar

Nikki R.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places in the city. Access to amazing talent, quality pieces and accessibility over a variety of genres of art and cultural pieces. The staff is amazing as well, they direct you to points of interest and are accommodating. The collection of overall masterpieces is unrivaled and it is free! Check out the curated revolving pieces they come out as well! It's a great spot to take a guests, go on a date or spend a rainy or overly hot day!

Yelp
Last week I was visiting St. Louis and had one day for museums. I wanted to get in as many as I could and had been to SLAM once prior, so I limited my visit to just one section - Modern and Contemporary. The museum itself is huge, beautiful and situated on top of a large hill inside Forest Park. A marvelous panorama, whether looking at the museum or at the park from the museum. The Modern collection houses some of my all-time favorites; Wiley, Lipschutz, Beckman, Picasso.... SLAM could be an all day affair or a quick jaunt in and out to see a certain wing or period of art. The price is free and is one of the most beautiful bargains in St. Louis.
google avatar

Susan D.

Yelp
Love visiting the St. Louis Art Museum. I was early enough in the day to take advantage of free parking on the East Lot. Even if I had to pay $15 to park on the main lot...still a great deal, considering admission to the museum is free. Forest Park is the crown jewell of St. Louis, with so many fabulous and free facilities and events. We toured the museum, and then moved on to the Boathouse for leisurely lunch and drinks.

Yelp
OMG! I live near DC and have visited Museums in Paris, NY LA and Italy. This one was my fav. Museum curator chose perfect pieces of art. The outside garden is to die for.

Yelp
Review based on our latest and quick visit of the main exhibit. We went for the Nubian/Egypt exhibit. It was $12 pp and they were supposedly limiting capacity. When we got our tickets the next time slot was five minutes away. I'm not sure why they did that, all that was happening was that a group of people were let in all at the same time which defeated the purpose of 'limiting' capacity or enforcing social distancing in any way. It just meant that everyone was thrown in all at the same time. The exhibit itself was ok. A lot of the same stuff. It wasn't prime museum quality exhibit but it wasn't horrible. Even with stopping at every item and reading a little bit into what we were looking at we were done in 20 minutes. It is a very small wing of the museum. We look forward to looking through the museum as a whole in the near future but so far, for this latest exhibit, lower your expectations.

Yelp
So impressed with St. Louis and its many free attractions within Forest Park, including the St. Louis Art Museum. I visited on a summer weekday and the limited free parking was full. If you're spending the day in Forest Park, I would recommend parking in one spot and taking the $2 shuttle to various attractions. It's located at the top of Art Hill, a scenic hill with pond and fountain (my description doesn't do it justice). Stand outside by the Saint Louis statue and enjoy the majestic views. Admission is free and this is a thoroughly impressive art museum. Tons of works of art within a stunning building - high ceilings, rustic wood, marble floors. This rivals many city art museums that charge a pretty penny for admission. The coolest part was the live painting happening in the lobby. Two artists were working on a large scroll and it was fascinating to watch. Even if not an art aficionado, I highly recommend a visit to St. Louis Art Museum!

Yelp
Bravo STL Art Museum, bravo I say! I've seen my fair share of domestic and international museums, not going to lie I have come to appreciate them more and more over the years. STL's is definitely up there with some of the best in the states, best part, its FREE! This city does it right as many attractions have no cost, which is great. While I can go on and on about each exhibit or wing, I believe many other Yelpers have done a much better job that I will be able to do. I will focus on the key points. First, parking is easy as the museum is located in a massive park, so no issues there. Secondly, friendly staff as well as very easy navigation when inside the museum, so that is a plus. Third, they do have a coat check, but I am pretty sure it has a cost, but do not quote me on that. Typical rules apply at this museum, no eating, yelling, running, etc., basically be an adult? You can easily spend a whole day here or more, just depends on your pace in museums, but I easily spent around four or so hours here. Of course many come for the Egyptian wing (Like many other museums), which are awesome, but they have many other gems here to see. Don't think twice, add this location to your to do list if visiting STL.
