Why Blaufränkisch Wine Is a Sommelier Favorite

"Co-owner Warren Johnson, who runs a petite wine bar with an ever-rotating list in Charleston, says Blaufränkisch are “seriously fun wines,” likening them to a mix of Nebbiolo, Grand Cru Beaujolais, Northern Rhône Syrah and Pinot Noir wrapped up with a big, red, happy bow; he recommends them to guests who enjoy Gamay and suggests lightly chilling the wines for casual gatherings, reflecting the venue’s small, adventurous wine-bar vibe." - Kate Dingwall

Hands down my favorite wine bar I have been to so far in the Charleston area. Grey my bartender was lovely and had excellent recommendations; making the night fun and enjoyable. The environment was both classy and cozy. I am looking forward to returning as everything I tried was curated to perfection and exquisite.

I wasn’t sure what was more exciting about stepping into this haven of wine — being able to score a bar stool in a sea of locals or finding it at all. Tucked away in the I’On neighborhood, it feels like you walked into Charleston replete with beautiful buildings, moss trees, and flickering gas lanterns. At about 6, this place was loaded with locals — and two dogs. It is a tight squeeze but one of the most comfortable wine shops I have ever been to. The wine selections are great, but expect to pay a premium. My Sancerre was $22. Yowza. But, the clientele here clearly can afford it.

We live in I'On, Mt Pleasant, and have become regulars at St Urban's and for good reason. It's an intimate venue that feels comfortable whether packed or if you are sitting at the bar enjoying a glass of wine after a long work day. What makes it great? The team is wonderful. It's a sign of how Warren leads that his staff don't turnover. This means you get consistently well-looked after by knowledgeable, capable professionals. The wine list is constantly evolving and always interesting, with a range of excellent choices at all price points. The food choices are updated regularly and posses tremendous range, themed on charcuterie, cheeses and other delicacies. It's a jewel of a bar.

UPDATE: Some new cheese selections that are phenomenal but Warren, Gray and the others are still attentive and over and above on the hospitality.... This is the antithesis of a Mt Pleasant establishment ...small, cozy, and attentive. It feels like a little slice of Euro heaven. We make sure to go here every time we are in town. Warren makes sure you ar comfortable and welcome and rotates wine choices and makes sure there are different price level choices. If you are a chocolate fan, make sure you try one of the unique bars from Mex City. Grey keeps things moving behind the bar and is very attentive to your needs as well.

Yelp
Quaint little wine bar in I'On with lots of street parking close by and plenty of seats inside and out. The wine list has a solid selection and while we didn't try the food, the options look good. Service is unobtrusive and since it's so small, you can usually get what you need quickly. Tables outside have the most uncomfortable tiny seats designed for kids. Always a solid post meal drink spot with moody ambiance and usually a puppy or two inside.
