Michelin-Starred Saison and Angler Sell Smoked Brisket Now | Eater SF

"After a brief closure, the two-star fine dining restaurant Saison has reopened as part of a dramatically different concept, trading its usual 12-course tasting menu (priced at $298 per person) for a takeout-friendly operation in partnership with its sister restaurant. The past year has been turbulent: chef-owner Joshua Skenes retreated to a remote hunting lodge in Washington, Saison lost its third star earlier in the year, and head chef Laurent Gras departed and moved back to New York. Richard Lee and Joshua Plunkett now serve as Saison’s head chef and sous chef, and Paul Chung remains the group’s culinary director, but longtime fans might understandably be confused by the shift in direction." - Becky Duffett

Great gem in the Capital Region. How good can a grilled cheese sandwich be? Give it a shot - the cheese was excellent. The bread perfectly crispy and buttered. Their tinned dishes were excellent - loved the razor clams and the beer selection was 💯!

Impressive little spot for a glass of wine, beer, or a snack. We were visiting Kinderhook on a summer Saturday. Nice seating inside and out. Helpful, kind staff who made excellent recommendations. Fried Bologna sandwich was tempting. However, took the gentleman's advice and your opted for the Duck Reuben. Yummy!

We loved this place so much. The staff was so kind and easy to talk to. The food was wonderful. We had the landlord board and the chèvre and honey sandwich. Both were incredible, so simple, but in a very elegant way. At the end of our meal, my husband and I were talking about how we didn’t feel like the place was stuffy or too high brow for people who just want a relaxed experience. A bar, but really felt like having a nice lunch at a good friends house. We absolutely loved it and it’s our new favorite place in the area. Kid friendly too! There was a high chair, books, and crayons available.

Google
Great little beer bar. Small but masterfully curated beer selection and spectacular grilled cheese. Dog friendly at the outside tables. I loved it!

Google
Great selection of sandwiches. Lots of beers, wine, cider. Monday metal nights drew me in and it's absolutely great. Little hidden gem.

Google
Love this place. We just moved to Columbia County from Brooklyn (yes, we are Covid-19 gentrifiers) and fell in love with this place right away. They have a fantastic beer selection, fabulous food, and offer $4 off any 4 pack to go! They also have a great outdoor seating area with heaters. A great place to grab a drink with a friend or grab some quality beers to go.

Ian S.

Google
Wicked beer selection, interesting & helpful staff, small but flexible menu. Tasty on all fronts.

Google
If you like a place that has the strong aroma of a cheese shop then this is the place for you. There is limited outside sitting and limited parking right on a major road. When I was there it had a snobby feel with many families with children that appeared overindulged and we’re often unattended. They have a good variety of beers on tap but for me, hard to enjoy with the overwhelming smell of cheese and the general vibe. Prices consistent with my above impression. Definitely not for the lactose intolerant.

Yelp
Saisonnier serves bar finger food. It has no kitchen. Sandwiches, salads and salumeria are cut at the bar. The sandwich is a panini and was good. The plates lack some design and garnish! Cucumbers and cocktail fruits are from jars. The food is tasty but amounts are small. The beer and drinks list satisfies. Review: 5

Yelp
This place is everything I look for in life. It's inviting, flavorful and laid back. The staff care about their product and they serve a wonderful mix of fantastic beer, an amazing selection of cheese and charcuterie options. Shout out to the great tinned fish options! The grilled cheese menu is something I strive to eat all of.

Yelp
A nice selection of beers, a well put together cheese board, all made for a good dinner. But what will keep me coming back. Their grilled cheese. The grilled Blue Cheese and the grilled Kimchi were delicious. Crispy sourdough outside, soft gooey center, each cheese and it's accompaniment perfectly balanced, a crunch with every bite. I've had fancier grilled cheese sandwiches, but you don't need fancy if the execution is perfect. It was here.

Yelp
Fun spot for a beer and sandwich. The decadent and little spicy twist on a Reuben with a duck, kimchi Reuben was fantastic.

Yelp
The best beer, anywhere, and always new beers to try. Amazing gourmet delicacies, at a great price...the duck reuben is spectacular. And everyone is authentically friendly...a Kinderhook treasure!

Yelp
LOVE LOVE LOVE this spot. The sandwiches are unreal. I mean, who doesn't love a local beer and cheese stop?! Flavors are booming here and their grilled cheeses aren't playing. So many options and honestly your belly will thank you. You will leave super satisfied.

Yelp
Lets get into it: as you walk into this small bar instantly draws you in where your nostrils are met with the smell of melted cheeses eloping in the crispiness of fresh bread. I had the landlords board, very good, the cheese didn't have much of the taste but everything else complimented each taste. The spicy grilled cheese, ugh amazing. I thought I would be picky about the peppers but ended up LOVING it. The crunch of the bread made it even better. I wish I could of tried their other grilled cheese options. UGH so good.

Yelp
I want to live at Saisonnier. It is my soul's match in food and drink. Oh, how cheese is my most beloved thing to eat and what wondrous and yummy cheese things they do make! Then there's the beer! A fine selection of delectable beers awaits you. The physical joint is cool and the vibe is awesome, too. Go there!

Anne F.

Yelp
What a find! This off beat little place has a huge assortment of beers, on tap and by the can. Their menu is simple with an assortment of gourmet grilled cheese (yum) and some amazing and reasonably priced charcuterie boards with local cheeses. Great place to stop for lunch.

Alice D.

Yelp
Terrific in every way. Food. Ambiance. Service. Do yourself a favor and stop by. It's a real treat

Yelp
This place is a gem. Their food is amazing, the drinks are fantastic (and you can buy both local and belgian beers to go), and the staff is friendly. Want to visit a cozy belgian farmhouse pub but aren't in Europe? Try this spot. I've visited about a dozen times over the last 6 months and haven't had a bad experience yet.

Yelp
We really loved this place on our trip to Kinderhook, NY, in the beautiful Hudson valley. Excellent food and ample selection of craft beers on draft.

Yelp
Our second visit this past weekend. We live about 40 minutes away, so it's a nice outing when we're itching to go somewhere out of town. Kinderhook is lovely. We just love this place. First time we had a charcuterie board. This time we shared two of the grilled cheese sandwiches and a mug of tomato soup. It's a cozy, friendly place. We sat at the bar this time. Our favorite sandwich was the Frenchie, with raclette and carmelized onions. The soup was outstanding. The beer choices, both draft and bottled, are excellent. My wife had cider; they have only two, but she was very happy with the one recommended.

Yelp
Great cheeses and beers! What a perfect fall stop after a walk down the road at Olana!

Yelp
What an excellent and quaint beer bar with stunningly creative and crisp grilled cheeses. (I had one with bayley hazen blue, cheddar, and a fig spread, on sourdough. Lots of attention to detail, and the balance of cheeses was perfect Beer selection is very well curated and diverse here with all the local rock stars hits from Suarez to imported lambics. A real local, neighborhood vibe, that fits nicely within the downtown of historic kinderhook. Outdoor seating and heat lamps available during covid. Worth a pop by to support a local gem.

Yelp
Amazing spot for a break on our route back home from upstate. The town of Kinderhook was adorable (a town that looks exactly as it sounds) and this lovely little restaurant and bar gave us the perfect excuse to enjoy it. Beer selection was excellent and local. Food was delicious and interesting and the service was excellent. During the pandemic we care a lot about places taking mask wearing and infection control seriously and thought this place was top notch. Felt very safe and happy to have a lovely spot to enjoy outside.

Yelp
Delightful concept: cheese shop meets beer / wine bar. Inventive cheese sandwiches on artisanal bread, tinned fish, and 9 well-curates beer taps with unexpected brews. Super casual vibe and professional staff. Ideal spot for lunch or happy hour when visiting the sites of Kinderhook.

Yelp
A great cheesemonger place, for truly gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches and charcuterie boards with a fine selection of microbrews and wines!

Yelp
We have been to Saisonnier a number of times and besides the very interesting and wide variety of beers that they have plus a selection of ciders and wines, they have amazing sandwiches. These are pressed creations in some kind of Panini press where the ingredients and combinations are mouthwatering. We often get the grilled cheese which uses a Plymouth cheddar cheese, which is an incredible taste and cheddar unlike any that I've had, and the bread is always so crunchy and juicy probably from some application of butter and oil that when its subject to pressing creates such a crunchy juicy succulent crust I have to bang my head against the wall just to accentuate the experience. Today we got the same but there was an opportunity to add some kind of ham to it for an extra $2.50 which we did. That was certainly a delicious addition but it did not need it in my opinion. The beers we got were a helles which my girlfriend got and really enjoyed and I got a session IPA, and a Suarez Pilsner. The session IPA was a vitamin sea baby waves session IPA. I was looking for a beer that had a little bit of bitterness in it and I feel like that task has been so evasive in past months with the prevalence of glorified grapefruit juice tasting New England IPAs being so universal in bars. This session IPA barely had any bitterness but the bartender suggested it as the closest to anything even a little bitter when I expressed my desire for some bitter flavor. I understand there is a craze for the NEIPAs but I am tired of them and long for some bitterness in beers which is so hard to find in any style. Its so hard to find any West Coast IPAs. Sometimes beers need to have a little bit of bitterness but there is such a craze right now for sweet beers New England IPAs, dessert beers, milkshake IPAs, sweet imperial stouts. Yes they are interesting but not every single time. But eventually like everything else this craze will move to another eventually. I also got a Suarez nimble pilsner. It's my first experience with Suarez beers, many people have mentioned how much they like Suarez so I wanted to finally try something from them. This is a very tasty beer had a delicious biscuit toasty flavor and great color and clarity. Saisonner is a very interesting comfortable spot that always offers delicious food and drink, I just need some bitterness in my beer now and then. Beer can be sweet beer can be balanced so that the bitterness and the sweetness accent each other and balance each other and then beer can be bitter. I would like the menu to include a few more beers that have a heavier bitter presence.

Yelp
Every town needs a place like Saisonnier. The grilled cheese sandwiches are delicious. My favorites are the blue cheese and the Spanish soppressata. They even get Bier ( beer) from my favorite small brewery in Germany. Always a great atmosphere and the perfect place to meet old friends or make new ones.

Yelp
I am so glad I found this place while on a trip to the area. It's really cozy inside and smells like melting cheese. Mmmmm.... I got a cheddar cheese grilled cheese and a bottle of wine and both were delicious. The grilled cheese is perfectly cooked - crispy on the outside and melty on the inside. (They do takeaway bottles of wine for half price!) They also had a TON of really great looking craft beers but I didn't get any. Next time. Once COVID is over, I will definitely go back and sit at the bar for a beer and cheese night! In the meantime, go here if you want delicious grilled cheese, unique craft beer and a welcoming atmosphere. Also, I felt very safe given COVID - the inside is clean and everything is socially distanced and mask wearing enforced.

Yelp
Excellent service, great vibe, food is delicious , especially the bread!! Highly recommended!

Yelp
What a great find! I was recommended to try this place out at another local business. We've had a place nearby in the Hudson Valley for a few years now and what I've thought was missing was a good place for good beer. It's missing no longer! Cozy spot in a historic building.Great craft beers - in cans and on tap. Wonderful sandwiches and great cheese. Can't wait to go back again and again. (And to send our guests to!)

Margot C.

Yelp
Huge selection of new beers all the time, cute spot. Variety of sandwiches. :).....

Yelp
I love this place. It has a charming atmosphere- an old world vibe to me. Fantastic beer selection, great wine and amazing sandwiches and cheese boards! I especially enjoy the kimchi grilled cheese and the pickled items and sardines. We've had great service each time we've been there. Looking forward to our next visit!

Komal C.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, the gherkin pickles are addictive, and the grilled cheese optikns are great for a vegetarian!

Yelp
Come to Saisonnier for great vibe. people, food, and beer! Possibly the best grilled cheese anywhere!

Yelp
I'm so glad we stopped here. My wife and I were looking for a spot for lunch on our way back to CT from the ADK mountains. Waze took us down Rte 9 instead of the Taconic and boy am I glad they did. The 3 Sandwiches we got to go we're delicious. My 9 year old son loved the Grilled Blue Cheese, North Fork chips and special sodas! I enjoyed the Chèvre & Honey and my wife raved about the Bahn Mi. I wish we could have stayed and had one of the many craft beers on tap. Only thing I wish was better was the selection of cheeses to purchase but given COVID-19, it wasn't that big a deal.

Phylis J.

Yelp
Super service, delicious food and the Duck Reuben is not to be missed! We liked it so much, we even got Saisonnier t-shirts!
google avatar

Yelp
Where to start?! Absolutely fantastic place and we couldn't be happier to have this quality of beer, cheese, service, and attention to detail that they bring at the Saisonnier. We had the Columbia County cheese board and 2 Pixie Dust beers, happy to learn about the owners passion and the locally sourced products. Bring the family, the guys, or a date and you won't regret it.

Yelp
Every time I come I have had an amazing experience. The food and drink is good on so many levels! There is a purpose to each mouthful; an intention to the way each drink coordinates with the cheese or bread or jam or ANYTHING you order! You are guaranteed to participate in a relaxing environment that encourages all your senses to awaken! Small but great selection of perfection. Don't change a thing!

Jim G.

Yelp
Great beers and genius grilled cheese w/kimchi sandwiches - nice people, too! Good outdoor seats to celebrate end-of-pandemic, too.

Tom J.

Yelp
The friendly staff and wide selection of beer make this place a no brainer! They are constantly updating their selection of beer and they make them to go! Check them out online to see what's new and order you will not regret it!

Yelp
This place is great. Beautiful renovation of a historic building. The bar is beautifully designed, and during the day the sun pours in as you eat and drink. The pate sandwich and Ploughman's board were delicious. The owners have clearly thought out the beer selection very carefully. There are so many amazing beers here, I want to try all of them. I had the Grimm Afterimage and the Tired Hands Honey I Love You on tap which were both fantastic. I also got a few bottles to go - the Saison Dupont and the Allagash Pick Your Own. It's so great knowing there is such a well curated and thought out bottle shop in the area, that also serves interesting, local cured meats and cheese plates and has so many beers on tap. The owners and the staff are all really knowledgable about what they're doing. They're super friendly and can talk to you about what they're serving and why they carry it. The pickles are incredible too. Go sit and drink and eat and enjoy. Highly recommend.

Yelp
After a great tour by a Park Ranger at Lindenwald (Martin Van Buren's home) we stopped by for a bite to eat. What a delicious, delightful and dynamic place. The wine, beer and sandwich recommendations by the bartender were spot on. What a treasure!
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
We stopped by for a quick beer and were very impressed by the variety and quality of the beer and snacks. Great staff and ambiance make this a great place. I will definitely stop by next time I am in the area.

Yelp
Nice, relaxing place with good beer and wine. Owner is not personnel but worker is.

Yelp
Great selection of beers. The cheese and meat boards are delicious and the cheesemonger really knows his stuff. It made it even better knowing all about what I was eating. The kimchi grilled cheese was also perfectly cooked and one of the best grilled cheeses I have tasted. I just wish I lived closer!

Joanna T.

Yelp
My husband and I have visited here twice and each time had a wonderful experience. We try to visit during quiet hours and bring our son with us. Each time the bartender has been welcoming, knowledgeable and absolutely accommodating. The food is always fresh. My favorite is the goat cheese sandwich with honey and arugula. The Bartlett house is delicious and the goat cheese just melts in your mouth. The beer list is impressive, and they are always suggesting samples based on what you think you'd like. It's a good establishment to have around.

Peter E.

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick lunch and some craft beer and was not disappointed on a hot Saturday afternoon. Great light sandwiches Four fat fowl triple creme cheeses with charcuterie and apricot jam was super. Toasted cheese with Grafton cheddar was also excellent. Married with a Farmstead Hill and Brooklyn dry Cider was a great match. Worth the stop.

Glenna M.

Yelp
We happened onto Saisonnier when we were exploring the area. Delicious food in a lovely setting! I really recommend it. I only wish we had had more time so as to try more food--and beer!!!

Aaron S.

Yelp
Great new place with a carefully thought out selection of beers you won't find anywhere else. The food is equally well curated and compliments the drinks well. One of my favorite spots to stop and experience something new.

From R.

Yelp
We've gone twice. Once last week, where we had a really great lunch, with interesting sandwiches and 3 different beers on tap. The place was packed, but the server kept checking in on us, making sure we had what we needed, and that we were enjoying our food and our drink. We had a great little table by the window, and looked out onto the quaint street. The variations of grilled cheese sandwiches (mine had pablono peppers), were warm, crusty and tasty. We want back today because I left a jacket there last week. We arrived before the lunch rush, and spent a few minutes talking to the owners. We also bought some ramp sausage, made in Maine in small batches, and we are absolutely loving it. We wish the place much success. We plan to go back soon.

Mandy B.

Yelp
This is exactly the kind of place that Kinderhook NEEDS! Beer, wine, perfect space for socializing or sitting at the bar and reading a book, and some tasty food options. I stopped in on a weekday evening around 6 to meet up with a friend to find a really tastefully renovated space with a spacious bar and some small tables. There is another side room with a large communal table that seats about 10 or 12. We sat at the bar. The two guys running the show were really friendly and knowledgable about the 8 mostly local beers (which I tried three of!) they had on tap. There was also a large variety of interesting canned and bottled beer. Also wine! This place has it all! BONUS, one of the BEST GRILLED CHEESES I'VE EVER HAD. A classic sharp cheddar on rye with a slab of heirloom tomato, absolute perfection. Townsfolk of Kinderhook and Valatie, PLEASE DO ALL THAT YOU CAN TO MAKE SURE THIS PLACE STAYS OPEN!!! This could be your ultimate low-key summer hang out.
