The best restaurants near the UNLV campus | Eater Vegas

"For students with appetites big enough to power through hours of lectures, Sakana Sushi has an all-you-can-eat menu of fresh nigiri and dozens of rolls. The cherry blossom-adorned dining room is decorated just enough to feel special — while the $29.95 price tag makes it a more affordable price for sushi among college kids. Choose from classic rolls such as spicy tuna or go for deep-fried rolls, tempura rolls, baked rolls, or spicy rolls." - Janna Karel

Google
We're vegetarian and happy to see a few options to choose from for the sushi rolls 🍣! Our waitress was kind enough to let us know the oil that the tempura is cooked in isn't vegetarian friendly. We ended up ordering Cucumber rolls and upon recommendation, Fuji roll! Both were delicious and the wasabi had a really good kick to it! Thank you for the clear communication & kind service 😊

Google
Server was so sweet her name was Jenny. The service was kind. We were greeted in 30 seconds even though it was a little busy! The food tasted amazing and was super tasty.

Google
Absolutely love this place—such a awesome spot! Perfect for a quick lunch or a fun date night. I really enjoy catching the sunrise here, and my wife, who’s a bit picky, always ends up loving the Vegas roll.

Google
This was our first time here. We loved our waitress. She was very personable and made us feel very welcome. Restaurant atmosphere and decor are really nice. It also felt very clean. The booths are a great option if you want to feel like you have a bit of privacy. We had some wine, the monkey brain appetizer, 3 different rolls, and the Sakana steak entree. All of our food tasted fresh. The steak was cooked perfectly. Our favorite roll was the pink flamingo. Would recommend if you’re looking for a new place to try out.

Google
Fantastic sushi. We wished the service was a little faster on drink refills and taking orders, but I’d go back. Waiter was fun, probably need an additional server to help??

Chris S

Google
This spot never disappoints. The tofu appetizer had some ridiculous flavor which made the tofu amazing. I typically struggle to eat it. The monkey brains was also fantastic with a great fry on them. The steak appetizer was ridiculously flavorful. I honestly could have gotten two of those for my meal. The sushi was pretty solid, not my favorite sushi destination, but very good nonetheless.

Google
Best sushi place in the state. Just a small place in Jordan Landing. Authentic & consistent. My family has been going there pretty consistently over the past several years. It’s one of our go-to places to eat. Definitely recommend.

Google
We love coming to Sakana for sushi! I think it’s a great price for what you get. Staff is always friendly!

Yelp
Absolutely loved this place! The sushi was fresh, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. Will definitely be back soon.

Yelp
Ordered garlic teri chicken wings, chirashi, and mochi ice cream. Fantastic! Probably some of the best wings and sashimi I have had in UT. Waitress honored the 10% off offered in the Google Maps "updates" but she said she didn't know who posted these things. Odd.

Yelp
My last review was 10 years ago, so it seems like they are due for an update. This is still one of my favorite sushi places in the valley but I think they peaked about 5 years ago. The owner used to be there most times we visited and as my family had become regulars she would always come over to our table and chat with us for a bit. She'd proudly show us pictures of the fish she had bought at auction recently and talk about the things they do to make their restaurant stand out. It got to the point that my wife and her connected on facebook. Well, she has a lot going on in her life so a few years ago she stepped back a little and hard facts are that the consistency took a bit of a hit, both in service and quality. Even on a bad day they are still pretty good, but they used to not have bad days, or at least almost never. The atmosphere also feels more like they are going through the motions vs striving to be the best. Anyway, still a fantastic option for quality sushi in the valley and especially if you happen to be in the neighborhood or don't want to go downtown for sushi.

Yelp
Generally the food is good, we never get sushi, but we enjoy the japanese food. The service is usually a bit above average but this time was a bit annoying at the end. Our server was attentive and friendly, but at the end of the night I am guessing a manager (I think her name was MeeHee or something like that) came over and was quite aggressive about it being time to pay. There were maybe 4 or 5 other tables and no one waiting, but we got the feeling we were being pushed out. We had only been there maybe 40-45 minutes total. We hadn't finished eating but had definitely slowed down, but she came over with the portable card reader and said "you ready to pay?" I said not quite yet but we could use a take home box. When she came back a couple of minutes later with the box, she said "you ready to pay now?" Just felt like give me my money and get out. Very disconcerting. This was not our first visit, probably been there 10-12 times before, but not sure when/if we will go back.

Yelp
We come here all the time since we live nearby - we are sometimes recognized by our waiter! We were trying a couple different rolls each time we went to find our perfect order - we've landed on the Moab, Angel, Sunset, Fresh, Small sashimi, Sakana! Moab - has citrus, a little spicy, veggie forward Angel - panko crumbs, very saucy, similar to the Awesome roll Sunset - absolute favorite, salmon with lemon Fresh - nice when you want a lighter rolls, no rice cucumber, imitation crab Sakana - veggie forward, lots of cucumber and green onion Small sashimi - we always get it because it's a good deal compared to just ordering sashimi of just one kind of fish, comes with miso soup. Sometimes they put fresh wasabi on the plate which is so good! Wasabi is mostly horseradish so fresh wasabi has a different flavor. Less potent, little sweet. We feel special every time we receive fresh wasabi!

Yelp
It was our first time eating there We really enjoyed it...would recommend the Playboy and the sunset rolls. Great service! We will come back again soon.

Yelp
I had an online order for pickup at 5:30....50 mins later I see multiple groups getting sat down and receiving their food while I am still waiting for mine. Never again at this place

Charlene S.

Yelp
Waitress clearly didn't want to be there. The order was messed up, ended up having the hostess bring our food. Didn't get half our order, but still were charged the full price.
google avatar

Fonzy P.

Yelp
The miso and asparagus roll were both so fishy tasting. Very concerning. Also be aware they charge an extra soda fee if you buy a mixed drink. Sushi was Ok. Pretty expensive for the quality and awkwardly enough a waiter brought in a pet fish she just bought from petsmart next door and all the wait staff and chefs handled it and didn't wash their hands before continuing to prepare and serve food. Won't go back wasn't highly disappointed but not worth the cost so I won't ever go back

Yelp
Everything about the experience was mediocre at best. Food took a while to come out even tho they weren't busy, and it wasn't all that great. I ordered the Chicken dinner combination with shrimp tempura. The salad that it came with had a tasty dressing but it has so much leftover water accommodated at the bottom of the bowl that it diluted. The chicken was pretty bland, but luckily the tempura was nice and crispy.

Juliann F.

Yelp
Excellent service and a very good food We were from out of town and very much enjoyed what they had on their menu and would come back when in town again

Rose C.

Yelp
I went to this place 3 times. We love the food. The service is great too. The employees are very friendly. The ambience is acceptable.
google avatar

Whitney P.

Yelp
It's decent one of the better sushi places near West Jordan they keep your change Some times it slow but they have a great steak salad
google avatar

Monica Y.

Yelp
Ordered a to go order. 3 rolls, gyoza and teriyaki chicken dinner, to be picked up. We gave them extra time because the order is never ready when we get there. We got there 10 minutes after the time we ordered for and it still wasn't ready. The gyoza was cold to the point it seemed like they had been frozen and not completely thawed. One of the rolls completely fell apart. And it was packed poorly so the salad dressing came out of the container and all over the inside of the bag, even though it was wrapped in plastic wrap. I paid way too much for this type of order so even though it's conveniently close, I will probably will be buying elsewhere from now on.

Yelp
We've been going to Sakana off and on now since they opened their doors. It's been a year since we had dinner there and it was not the same. Overall the food was not good! The appetizer Monkey Brains lacked any flavor. Had it not been for the soy sauce it would have almost been inedible. The Playboy roll was okay and the Salmon Crunch roll was horrible. It fell apart and reminded us of a poorly made tuna sandwich. Hope they can get back on track and remember how they used to be. Until then we will look for another Sushi Bar.

Yelp
I used to frequent this restaurant every time I'm in the area and have always recommended this place for sushi to friends; however, after today I am never supporting their business again. It took 15-20 minutes for the server to stop by our table after being seated. We placed our order and waited another 40 minutes with no food put out yet. I tried to get our servers attention but she was nowhere to be found. When we were finally able to track her down, I let her know we had to get to the movies and wanted to cancel our order. They said it was too late and asked if we wanted our sushi to go. I let her know we were going to a 2 hour movie and didn't want our raw fish to be sitting out for 2 hours. They forced us to pay anyway and said there was nothing they could do for us. I asked for a box anyway with no intention of eating the food, but the server left and never came back after we paid. We got no boxes for our food so we just left. Ive never been so disappointed from a business.

Yelp
Food: was super good everything I ate was top tier! Service: Everyone is super nice and polite. Ambiance: it was a relax and chill vibe I really liked It.

Aubrey G.

Yelp
When we came in there was no one to greet us and the staff were at a booth talking, looked at us and then went back to talking. We stood there for a couple of minutes and still no one came to greet us. We almost walked out but then a hostess showed us to our table. We came in an hour before close so I understand the frustration but if you are open and accepting guests you should treat them like any other guest. Food was mid but the rolls were falling apart and obviously carelessly put together. They were also overpriced for what you get. Overall I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone and I won't be back. Lastly, 30 minutes before close a couple came in and were turned away even though the door clearly stated they were still open. If you close at 9, it should be stated that you're closed at 9 and not 9:30.

Alisha F.

Yelp
I love how close to home this is. I went here for sushi. The food was delicious! My favorite is the Jordan!
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Had no idea this place had been here for 11 years. Found just by driving near Best Buy. Wonder why it never comes up on Yelp when searching for sushi places 'open' around lunch? Anyway, the service was excellent so attentive the whole time! Food came out in a timely manner, we were checked up on every 5 minutes or so. For sure will be back as this place is a no-frills type of establishment and perfect for when I am in rush!
google avatar

Pamela B.

Yelp
There's not any reason for 4 stars except I've been and had some of the most amazing sushi in the world. It's so hard to give it 5 stars even though it's good and I've been here a few times because it's close. I hope that makes sense. If I hadn't had some of the best sushi from some of the most famous sushi chefs in the world, ya this would probably be 5 stars. My husband had the monkey brains and he LOVED it. I can't have mushrooms so it was all his. I stuck with the classic edamame which is always a good solid go to. We ordered the Lagoon and G2 rolls which were delicious. The G2 roll kept falling apart which was annoying but the taste was great. Both rolls are tasty and you can't go wrong with them. The 1st time we went, I believe we sat at the bar(pre-Covid) and just did chefs choice. If you want a solid local sushi place, you can't go wrong.
google avatar

Andy T.

Yelp
Specials are good . They had sushi Tacos . Food is good prices is avg and service was really good. We had a party of 5 but was charged gratuity

Dawn G.

Yelp
My favorite Sushi Bar. Mee-hee was our waitress, she's friendly and the best thing to order is Sake with flavor is the best. Food was 10/10. Can't wait to go back for more Sake....

Cheyenne P.

Yelp
The food was ok for sushi. But I watched the chef in the back kitchen hand out shrimp and rolls with his bare hands after touching his face. The front chefs making fresh rolls had gloves, but the guy in the back did not which is really gross.

Richard S.

Yelp
The food is very good and reasonably priced. The locations is a little hard to find and the interior is getting a little rundown. The interior could certainly use an update but again the food is very good and the price is great. There really is no ambience to speak of at Sakana. I really enjoy everything I've tried at Sakana. I've been there many times over the years and I've never had a bad meal there. Ownership changed about a year ago, but it doesn't seem to have affected the food or the service at all.
google avatar

Nitaya C.

Yelp
This place is near my house, so I visit pretty regularly. The pricing is awesome, I'm not a fan of sushi rolls, so I always get the large sashimi platter. Everything is always fresh and delicious. The one thing that I don't like is the octopus, but you can ask for a sub. I wouldn't recommend the sub though, the replace some of the fish as well, but the octopus replacement is mackerel. That fish is just... too fish for me. The rest is great! They're always generous with the wasabi and ginger. Will go back, again and again. :)

Dawn K.

Yelp
We ordered five different albacore (Tuna) rolls plus several shrimp rolls and if you're a sushi eater, you would know right off the back after tasting this albacore! the ALBACORE is the lowest grade, it had a frozen, not fresh taste. Miso was luke warm and the shrimp tempura was not freshly cooked. Oh, and they cut the shrimp down the longest way and make two pieces out of one shrimp, so you get hardly any shrimp and all batter.
google avatar

J J.

Yelp
This place was recommended to me by our postmaster. The service was wonderful and the restaurant was clean but unfortunately the sushi was terrible and the spicy mayo was super salty. The rolls were sliced too thick and lacked flavor.
google avatar

Alisha L.

Yelp
I stopped by for a little post Christmas lunch with my sweet momsie! This honestly is the perfect spot. I ordered from the lunch menu a bento box with steak, California rolls, shrimp/veggie tempura. It also came with a salad in a yummy ginger dressing. Everything tasted fabulous. Service was great as well. I plan to make this a regular spot and would highly recommend to call.
google avatar

Zack M.

Yelp
We got Sakana for lunch at work and overall it wasn't bad. I ended up getting a bento box to get a little taste of everything. The shrimp and veggies tasted great! I only wish they sliced the veggies in half as it was a bit difficult to eat at their size. The miso soup however had little to no flavor which was disappointing. Additionally the sushi felt middle of the road and the pieces completely fell apart when I would pick them up. Overall, I had a decent first experience with them and I'll probably give them another go in the future.
google avatar

Carrie O.

Yelp
Don't let the strip mall facade fool you. This is a good restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed our bento boxes. This is a place where the katsu and the tempura are not greasy, but very crispy and good. We saw other people Donburi bowls. I almost ordered a teriyaki salmon Donburi bowl. Clearly I need to come back for that. Service was quick and efficient. They kept our water glasses full. Tables were clear promptly. The women's restroom was very clean. This would be a great place for a meal before or after the movie theater. Or during a day of shopping.

John G.

Yelp
Been going here for years, this was my go to spot when I come here from out of town. Must be new management, sushi rolls were horrible, service was worse. Had a party of 5 with 2 checks and they enforced a minimum 20% gratuity per check. All the food came out at different times. Ordered 3 appetizers and they all came out 5-10 min apart, same with the rolls and dinners. Quality of food has gone way down. Guess I need to find a new spot
google avatar

Lu T.

Yelp
Just had dinner here as a recommendation from my hotel front desk. The recommendation was right on It was an easy walk from my hotel. Service was awesome. I sat at the sushi bar but there was plenty of seating. The place was lively with a couple of TVs if you like sports. As for the food, I ordered the G2 roll. It was fresh and light. I also ordered the chicken teriyaki combo. Chicken was breast meat and very tender. Hard to do at most restaurants. The tempura was spot on, crispy and hot. Also hard to do. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Joshua A.

Yelp
This has been my favorite sushi place, by far since around 2015/2016. The quality WAS top notch and the service WAS great! However, it seems that when the new owners took over things have gone downhill fast. It seems like creating value for the owners has become priority over creating value and a quality experience for the customer. I know it needs to be a profitable business, but balance is important. It seems as though the new owners saw missed opportunities in generating revenue where they didn't exist, so it's being forced. There are now mandatory fees for sides of sauce, automatic gratuity for my family of 5, military discount restricted now to only active duty, etc. Heads up, we have one single active duty base in utah and it's an hour away from this restaurant, so take that as you will. Some of the employees are the same, so it seems like they are making due with what they have, but it's clear that the new owners have ensured that they adhere to the new standards of revenue first, service second. I don't think it will be long before the long-time customers like myself start trickling away and frequent new spots. I would still recommend you try it at least once for yourself to make your own assessment, but these are my opinions based on my own observations. I have been probably 10 times or more since the new owners took over and over a hundred times before that, so I have a reasonable amount of information to formulate the conclusion I have.
google avatar

Nancy C.

Yelp
Fresh sushi and impressed with their ama ebi and uni. Unexpected delicious sushi spot in West Jordan. The monkey brains appetizer was good too. The service is very team oriented so you're taken care of by everyone. Sushi was fresh and can't wait to go visit again!
google avatar

Noel V.

Yelp
The sushi is good. I'd recommend coming here during their lunch hours because they have select sushi rolls for $7.99. It's worth coming to lunch over dinner. There are not many sushi restaurants in West Jordan, so it is a great place for the locals if you don't want to travel far.
google avatar

Kathleen S.

Yelp
I like this place. Not a fan of sushi so I can't give an opinion on it. Place is always busy so I guess the sushi is pretty good
google avatar

Heather H.

Yelp
My sister and I really enjoyed this place. We got the Teriyaki Steak Bento Box with the Playboy Sushi Roll and the Rainbow Sushi Roll. Everything was really good, especially the steak that comes in the bento! It was so juicy and tender. I only wish there would have more of it! Our server was quiet but sweet, and the restaurant was clean. Will definitely be back!

Rhett T.

Yelp
Absolutely nothing to complain about here. I made a to-go order, food was ready when I arrived, and it was absolutely delicious for the price I got (note: I got lunch versions of these rolls). I like that the website allows me to remove it things from the roll that I am not a fan of. Great service, will definitely order from here again.
google avatar

Samantha H.

Yelp
Ordered takeout... sunrise and sunset rolls. They were good, but I was not a fan of how everything was packaged. I hate Wasabi and Wasabi was just freestanding in the box provided, causing it to get on sushi. Wasabi and ginger should be put into the small containers, or provided upon request, like soy sauce. Despite that, rolls were delicious and I appreciated the special! Wish there was more on the specials menu!

Kathryn B.

Yelp
Always a good time at Sakana Sushi! The food is tasty and reasonably priced. Their specials are great as well! The service is so great. Attentive service is always there. The ambiance is fun and can be loud. You will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Kevin K.

Yelp
This sushi bar is an absolute home run! We had a large variety of rolls, and we were happy with every single one of them. Though our absolute top rolls were the Vegas roll and big surf. The prices are also very reasonable. Out of the 5 or 6 sushi places we have been to in salt lake, this is by far the best !

Taylor L.

Yelp
Came here and I'm almost impressed by how hard we were ignored once sat at our table. They brought us or drinks then told us "we'll be right back". 35 minutes of trying to get the employees attention later we ended up having to get up and leave. Super bummed, really was excited for some tasty sushi but I'll have to go find it somewhere else :(
google avatar

George G.

Yelp
The service is good, the food is bad. I paid $6 for a roll of sushi which was good, but a very short roll and not as good. For the same price I can but a roll is sushi, freshly made at Smiths that is twice as long and tastes much better. First and last time I ever go here.

Brian W.

Yelp
My family loves this place. The service is great and there are a lot of food options. I love the monkey brains.
google avatar

Ashlee T.

Yelp
Hello. Can I talk to you about sushi? Listen I'm not a sushi professional or anything. But this place was quite good. Everything tasted super fresh. We went around opening, it was already pretty busy. I was suprised by that actually. We got the Monster Brains (don't destroy me if that is completely wrong) yes, yes and yes! Mushrooms and tuna and deep fried goodness. Oh my! 4 real I have never had something like that. Yummy sauce as well. Got a couple different rolls, scallop and spider were my personal choices. Service was great, got some beer. Which thank god they have. I'll definitely back for more update on different roll, and appetizers. Smaller restaurant, great for date night of parties of 4.
google avatar

Kristi B.

Yelp
This used to be my favorite sushi in town. The food has gone down in the last year or so. The fish isn't nearly as fresh, the service isn't as great. I'm bummed because I use to enjoy going here, now I almost never go.
google avatar

Dynasty Y.

Yelp
I've always preferred there sushi since I know they are thoughtful about choosing there fish. The Maguro is amazing quality. I like to order Nigiri Sake. I just love it so much. Then it's one of three things to go with the Nigiri either the Vegetable Tempura, The Agedashi Tofu or the Yaki Soba. Those three dishes are the best of the best to me. I compare all those dishes to Sakana's when I eat other places and so far Sakana remains #1. Nearly every time we order and enjoyed the G2 Roll though you might want to save that till the last due to the garlic.
google avatar

Bret L.

Yelp
We've been coming to Sakana for awhile. We love their sushi and the prices are okay. You should be able to find your favorites as well as the popular "Utah" rolls. The 4 stars is for service, sometimes it's great, sometimes okay, and sometimes they forget about you.
