Yelp
Sakana is a pretty popping spot! We arrived at 4:45pm to a full restaurant. This surprised us because it only opened at 4:30pm. With that kind of first impression, we were expecting some pretty phenomenal food!
We started the meal off with Geso-age. As described by the menu, these are crispy, deep-fried marinated squid legs with spicy mayo. They were GREAT! I remember telling my husband, "Wow, I'm impressed. These have just the right amount batter, crunch and are not oil. Win!"
Unfortunately, this is was where the biggest win of the night came.
For our main course, we split the Special K Roll, Sakana Roll, Negihama (Yellowtail + Scallion) and Kani (Snow Crab). In terms of taste, I'd rate as follows...
Special K Roll: 3.5 -- It surprisingly didn't have much flavor. It was also not wrapped tight enough and fell apart when trying to pick it up with chopsticks.
Sakana Roll: 3.6 -- It surprisingly didn't have much flavor but was better than the Special K Roll.
Negihama: 4.5 -- Surprisingly, great flavor! I figured with it having the least amount of ingredients that it'd be less tasty than the rolls, but I was wrong. It had twice as much flavor as the bigger and more expensive rolls. I'd order this again and again.
Kani: 1.5 -- Oh, this bite of sashimi was extremely salty and watery. Typically, Kani is our favorite at sushi spots, however, this did not taste fresh at all.
So why do I still give it 4 stars if the food experience was not the best?
My four stars is for the well-roundedness of the establish, for my understanding that I may have not ordered the dishes they are known for, and for the fact that we can all have a bad night. The food may have been off but the kindest of the staff and atmosphere they created was ON.
That counts for an extra star in my book!
