These San Francisco Bay Area Restaurants Offer Tatami-Style Seating | Eater SF

"In the Inner Richmond, I found that Sakesan Sushi & Bistro has tables with horigotatsu seating and also features a private karaoke room designed in the same style; reservations are recommended and come with a minimum food-and-drink charge and a three-hour time limit." - Dianne de Guzman

Google
It's our FAVORITE family restaurant, and we often go to it. It's in our neighborhood, which makes it even more special. We love going there; the service is great, and the staff are the best. My little son loves this place so much🫰🏻 The prices and the size of the rolls are perfect, I like it.✨

Google
Here for dinner last night. Very fresh and creative specialty fish dishes in addition to traditional sushi offerings, friendly and attentive service, lively and attractive room; they also have three private rooms for party/group meals and karaoke. Reasonably priced and they have $1 oyster nights (not sure on when these are offered). Recommend.

Google
Overall a nice place to grab a meal, very clean and inviting interior with decent to good value for SF ~ Solid Chicken Teriyaki Donburi for $16 roughly Okay Philly Roll for $8 And Overpriced Bonfire Roll for $18 ~ highlight of the orde was the open flame on the plate, NOT the dish itselfl

The food here is fantastic! Some of the best Japanese food and sushi I've ever had. I highly recommend the Ankimo (steamed monkfish liver) especially with how reasonably priced it is during happy hour. What's more to love about the food here is the price to quality ratio. Very reasonably price, yet so very delicious. You will not be dissapointed for how much you spend in relation to the enjoyment and flavor profile you'll get from your meal. The service on the otherhand, is comically poor. It's as if you are interupting their day by arriving at the restaurant with the intention of ordering food from, y'know, the restaraunt 😅 There's a sense that they're upset and perturbed to be serving you. It's nearly impossible to get smile from anyone or get any sense that they seem to be engaged or at least content in their work. Perhaps they are family members of the owner(s)? Anyhow, they do not seem to be happy to be there or happy that you are either. I only give the atmosphere 4 out of 5 due to the quality of the front of house staff, as I find that to also be a factor of the "vibe" of a place. Other than that, the simple, minimalist vibe with low seating in the front is quite fantastic!

Been here once after hours of playing basketball. Upon arrival, the ambiance was modern and entertaining. Didn’t wait much since I knew someone that worked here and was seated almost immediately. Was seated at the tables were you take off your shoes and cross cross your legs which made it a very authentic experience. I don’t usually eat raw fish but I did here and enjoyed some sake along the way. I highly recommend this place to anyone that loves to eat, drink or just to have a great time with their laid back type of vibes. Definitely will be back!

Google
First time at the Clement Sakesan. Came for happy hour and was not disappointed. Very good pricing for the quality of food. Extremely attentive service that always has needs in mind. Takoyaki was solid, roll with unagi hit the spot and the mackerel was fantastic. Seated in those sunken tables for the most fun experience.

Google
They reopened after a renovation, it’s very nice inside with plenty of Japanese style booths to sit in. The food was good, we got chirashi, beef don, chicken gizzards, oysters, and a yuzu cheesecake. They were all satisfying, it was just the gizzards that were a bit too charred. The prices were great as well, affordable compared to other Japanese restaurants nowadays. Service was quick and they are very attentive. We had a good experience and will definitely be back!

Google
Sushi omakase is fantastic, but the skewers are the exact opposite. Chicken skin is too salty, felt like they only added the seasoning after grilled. Scallops are disappointing, overcooked and are too dry–I don’t feel juicy and the sweetness it should have. Basically no service, one waiter even took our plate without asking if we are done with it (I know it’s an empty plate, but at least ask before). I’m glad another waiter asked us how the food was, and we gave her our honest opinions. Hopefully yakitori here can get better in the future.

Yelp
Came here with my girlfriend around 4:15 pm on a Friday, wasn't packed at all, we were seated at a booth and you take off your shoes and get go up on the steps and get seated inside of the booth, very traditional which is super awesome. They frequently take your order. We got hot sake, a coke, and a glass of asahi for drinks. They have various amounts of alcohol. We got plentiful amounts of food from the happy hour menu. I really recommend coming during the happy hour time. You can get a lot of bang for your buck. It's great and we ate all of the dishes that came out. You can see all we got on the images I've posted, everything we ate was so delicious and paired super well with the alcohol. Honestly super solid and we will have to come back for rolls and sushi. The place feels so traditionally clean and nice. Honestly recommend.

Yelp
So I came here a week ago cause I saw that they have a one dollar oysters promo. When I went on a Thursday, the sushi I ordered was good, I got the omega-3 and a black garlic Ramen and six oysters. I would definitely have said five stars I came back today on a Sunday night and ordered 2 orders of salmon nigiri, amaebi nigiri, and scallop. Plus, one order of tuna sashimi. The rice underneath the nigiri was gross. It was mushy and clumped together, and some bites and the rice looked and tasted like brown rice, and had the density of brown rice. I couldn't even eat some of the rice and I scraped it off and ate the sushi plain. It tasted so different from the last time I went so I think I was served leftover or old rice that they couldn't sell during the day. And I would've ordered oysters, but they had sold out. Because of today's experience, I give this place a two star rating and I don't think I would come back here again for a while.

Yelp
Well deserved 5 stars!! Decided to try this place during happy hour and it did not disappoint. Jalepeno poppers: SO GOOD! I don't like jalepenos but this is solid Bonfire roll: good mix of flavors Japanese wagyu: buttery af! Highly recommend adding wasabi on top Uni: first time trying it and it tastes creamy and fresh Oyster: $1 each during happy hour. Amazing deal. Also very buttery!!! Service here is also great with slightly dim lighting . Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Years later, this place is still one of my favorite sushi places. Food is always consistent and service is always great. Ray is the best!

Yelp
We came here on the recommendation of an Uber driiver. It was a terrific sushi place and is now on my go to spots list in SF. The place is very clean and nice. The dining experience was slightly elevated and the service was outstanding. We will be back!

Yelp
I've had this place bookmarked for quite some time now and can't remember why. Alas, a friend and I found ourselves wondering around Clement St to pick up food and go sit by GGB. Sushi to go fit our vibes so well. Sakesan has rolls that are fresh and simple. I got the OMG and it was perfect! No complaints. My friend got their curry and he said it was very tasty and filling. Would definitely come back for a sit down whenever I'm in the mood for rolls.
google avatar

Yelp
Sakesan just remodeled their interior and it is very clean and modern. The nigiri and rolls are super fresh and taste amazing. We got the yellowtail, jalapeño poppers, two rolls, and oysters! The oysters were $1 each and tasted pretty fresh. I have been coming here for years and will continue to come back! :)
google avatar

Taesung K.

Yelp
I love this places happy hour deal. $5 draft beers and such good happy hour food deals including $1 oysters. Out of everything we got I actually really liked the crispy mushrooms. They were super tempura battered but the little bits of mushroom felt great to eat w some wasabi. They were pretty busy but they were quick to serve everything. One of the TV's plays constant karaoke music that doesn't really match anything but idk it feels fun haha Would def come here again esp during happy hour.
google avatar

Yelp
I have come here quite a few times with my family already and the food has always been great. I really do love the set up of their restaurant where there's dining tables but also the traditional take off your shoes booth seating. Even though the space is quite open, each sitting area is sectioned off so it feels like you're in your own world. There's also karaoke rooms you can book if you want to do any small celebrations or parties. Service can be hit or miss. I think...each time I've gone, something has always gone wrong -- either an item on the menu is not available or they've forgotten to put in our order. All times they've been pretty apologetic but this is just something to be aware of.

Yelp
We tried sakesan for HH since we saw so many reviews recommending it! It was empty at 5pm on a Sunday so we were seated without any wait, but the spot did fill up as we were eating. Love the calm vibes inside and the Japanese style tables that you take your shoes off to sit at. Servers were so kind and helpful, we were looked after while we were there. I also noticed the karaoke rooms there and think it would be so fun to go with a bigger group of friends! We ordered off the HH menu, including the miso soup, seaweed salad, fried shishamo, veggie croquettes, california roll, spicy salmon roll, spicy tuna roll, and the spicy albacore and spicy tuna tacos. My favorite things we got were the spicy tuna taco and the fried shishamo. The rice on the rolls was pretty sticky and mushy, I think it was off because of the time we were here? It definitely put me off from ordering any other rolls or nigiri even though I wanted to try more of their menu. We ordered a hot sake to enjoy with our food and were out the door $65 after tip. Overall, it's definitely a really good deal, but unfortunately they were lacking in execution on the most basic component of rolls and nigiri while we were there. I'll come back to give them another chance.

Yelp
I wish I was better at keeping secrets, because this restaurant is probably one of the best Japanese restaurants in terms of freshness, price, and ambiance. The seating is really nice, with some wooden booths that you must remove your shoes to sit at. The oysters are $1 all day, every day. And the service is quick and efficient! I will definitely be back.

Yelp
My friends and I had a reservation for a Friday night and the place was pretty busy! We loved everything about Sakesan! The food was delicious, the servers were amazing, and the quality of the fish was some of the best. We chose to get a selection of items and also ended up getting the chefs omakase (which I highly recommend). The prices were pretty reasonable for the quality we got. Definitely look forward to coming back!

Yelp
WHOA what a great restaurant. Everything about my experience here was wonderful. I've been here two times so far and it's my favorite sushi restaurant in the area. The first time I went they had $1 oysters! I'm so surprised it's not busy all day. Both times i've went there was no wait. Here are some of my food ratings: shishito peppers, 9/10 omakase 10 piece, 9/10 takoyaki, 8/10 agadashi tofu, 10/10 i'll have to come again and take more detailed notes of what i think of the food. we ate so much delicious sushi that I slipped into a food coma this will forever be my go to spot so beautiful in here
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
Came for $1 oysters and they were pretty solid! Shared some rolls and they were pretty good. We got the negitoro roll, the cherry blossom, and a couple others. the cherry blossom was my favorite! Pretty decent sushi and cute ambiance, you have to take your shoes off for some of the booth seating
google avatar

Andy T.

Yelp
I finally found them! Truly $1 per oyster happy hour! The fish quality was pretty good. I think it's more of a rolls place if you're into sushi rolls. Good service, cool bar, good drink menu. The restaurant has a clean and fun vibe. Could use a could paintings though. Overall great sushi place!
google avatar

Derek P.

Yelp
First off I wanted to say that their happy hour menu is AWESOME! One thing that stood out the most was the crispy mushroom. Has truffle salt on it and paired well with our asahi. We also got some nigiri and I gotta say the quality of the fish was amazing and loved every bit of it. Service was good as well. Server let us move to the bar after we sat down which was super nice and the overall atmosphere was very nice. I would definitely come back again.

Yelp
We were looking for a sushi spot in this area. There are eight of us, so I called in advance to book a reservation. They wanted a credit card in case we didn't show up. The fee wasn't much, maybe $15-20 per person but I didn't wanna deal with this. The guy said if we come early enough, it should not be an issue. It was awesome memorial day Monday. He said to call the day of, to see if we can hold that reservation for us without the credit card information. Street parking was super easy because it was a holiday. We got there at 6:30. Lots of parking right on Clement Street as well as the avenues. We walked in, and maybe because it was a holiday, it wasn't that crowded. And it was only when they showed us our table, we had a private room to ourselves. So nice to have this option! The space is very modern and clean, they had a few different seating options. There were a few seats at the sushi bar, there were a few tables that are Japanese style Kotatsu. With these you take off your shoes step up to a platform sit on the platform and elect your legs tangle under the table. This would not work for my parents who have mobility issues. But the private room with the regular chair worked great for a group. We ordered some rolls, Hamachi Kama, and Ramen. Service was great but we had a hard time understanding what they were saying when the food started coming out. And they occasionally did not know what kind of fish was being served, so they had to go and ask and come back. It would be nice if the water glasses were bigger, they are the size of toddlers drinking cups. Everything was delicious! Highly recommend!

Yelp
I loved this restaurant! There were SO many vegetarian options with different rolls and tempuras at a great price. The $1 oysters were a hit on the table as well as the sashimi. Nice interior and family friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is always amazing, the fish is great quality at an affordable price. The service is quick and the servers are great. There's something for everyone here, a back room with karaoke for friends and large parties, there's traditional seating where you take off your shoes as well as bar tables and standard seating. This place is really great for any occasion.

Yelp
Great quality food, warm and relaxing ambience, and good service. The only downfall is trying to find parking. Uber if you can, trying this place out is worth it!
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
Great sushi spot with a really solid happy hour. The sushi is always fresh, flavorful, and made with care. The vibe of the place is clean, welcoming, and overall just a nice place to sit down and enjoy a meal. Definitely worth checking out.

Yelp
First time eating at this sakesan, I've eaten in the one near ocean Avenue and really enjoyed it so was happy to have stumbled into this in Clement st. We ordered the omakase and also got a sushi roll. The toro was really good, the other fish were kind of tough with the connective tissues, making it chewy and hard to break apart when eating it. For the rice in the omakase nigiris, they were a little hard and crunchy. I was a little disappointed. Would recommend the toro tho and also the Inside out sushi roll. We saw that they have tasting for tunas and that would have been a better route instead of the omakase as we only enjoyed the toro. The place was really comfortable and I like how it had such a family friendly vibe. There was a party in one of the private rooms with karaoke, such a good idea to combine sushi and karaoke! :) Overall, staff were very friendly and attentive. Good vibes in the place, disappointed with the omakase pieces and the rice but would explore maybe ordering just the rolls and robatas with karaoke.

Yelp
Me and gf came on Friday during happy hour we got hot sake and beer then ordered so much food from the happy hour menu everything was so good my favorite was the mackerel fiesta the jalapeno peppers had salmon in it which was great I don't usually go for that but it was delish. The mussels were also so good I'd definitely come back everything was priced perfectly. Service was fast and friendly. We picked a booth and had to take our shoes off it felt very homey.

Yelp
Came to this place for dinner a few nights ago and found the place not quite full at about 5:30 in evening. Entrance was very tight if more than 3 individuals waiting for seating. Staff seemed hurried despite not yet a full house. We started with a miso soup which while smelled nice, it lacked flavor upon consumption. Then came a couple of their sushi rolls, which was a disappointment due to the sushi rice had a grainy consistency and lacked any flavor. We took advantage of the dollar oysters which was okay. Then came a couple of nigiri sushi. Nothing special. Then came the Omagazi Sashimi and Nigiri. The chef selection was nice however, the wait staff did not share the recommended order of consumption in order to take advantage of the different flavors and textures. The sushi rice was very subdued in terms of flavor to the point of no vinegary flavor. The fish on the nigiri had a nice texture on the initial bite but was kind of mushy on subsequent bites, fish were not spoiled at all. The sashimi slices were deemed too large and the freshness of the selected fish were questionable amongst ourselves. After consuming all this, we found ourselves still hungry so we order a couple of ramen noodles. This was a big disappointment as the noodles had a fairly strong floury flavor and consistency. 3 of 5 in our party was very disappointing that this location did not have the same attentiveness of staff and the much lower quality of products when compared to the Ocen Avenue location. Personally thought a 1 Star more than enough but was convinced to give at least a 2 star. Also if you have a large party (5 or more), I found this place pricey considering the lack of a quality product.

Yelp
Well it's a really cool looking place great lighting and general ambiance. Some of the tables are sunken and shoes are optional. The staff is incredibly attentive and knowledgeable. We were seated quickly and the menu was not only interesting but extensive. I got the salmon sampler which had king, belly, etc .,It was a phenomenal! Well staged and delicious. The spicy salmon roll was very good and I felt the prices were pretty reasonable. The ramen looked Amazing but I haven't tried it yet . Highly recommended.

Yelp
Amazing happy hour and delicious food. This is one of our favorite spots in the Inner Richmond. It's always busy, but I appreciate how attentive the service staff is. Everything on the menu here is a win!

Yelp
Came here for Happy Hour and was pleasantly surprised! First off, this place has a really nice calm ambiance, staff is very attentive, and also the food was good! I was so overwhelmed by what I wanted to order and wished I had a second stomach just so I can keep eating. Can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Kenneth L.

Yelp
We went there as a family group of 10/11 people, the room is kinda awkward coz the door need to open outward which passer probably will be hit then inward will be break due to the fixed chair (should be sliding at least , the door if sliding a plastic or plexiglass unbreakable, while we're eating flies like 8x flying around the room which we kill them , should have like anti bug or blue light the other side of the wall to prevent bugs/flies , there's other room which the table is at center then the guest can go each side at least than open/close the door just to go in/out. The food is good nothing to say bad on it then service is ok just the room and the situation ( I prefer the table should have a pathway to the other side at least than long table which some people hard to go out
google avatar

Yelp
Come for their happy hour specials or the karaoke! While I always hear the karaoke rooms just GETTING IT, I have not partaken. However, sitting at the bar, we can clearly see that the people in the rooms are living their best lives. Staff are always fantastic and super helpful. We're regulars, so they always know what we're into. Cheap sake, cheap HH food... great time. Hope to see you there!
google avatar

Adora Y.

Yelp
Honestly not sure about all of the mixed reviews, but every piece of nigiri I had was on point, fresh, and affordable for the quality. Hubby and I will be back soon!
google avatar

Tina L.

Yelp
@sakesanbistro sister restaurant of @sakesanocean food was delicious but can get pricey. Heck who says you can't spoil yourselves once in a while. My favorite was the Toro Uni Taco. Food came fast. Servers were nice they helped when we needed to order more food. This location is much lighter in mood setting to their sister location. The one on ocean has more of a night life vibe to it. Both are equally nice just again pricey.
google avatar

Gordon L.

Yelp
Went for happy hour on clement street, server was polite and answered all of our questions. My favorites were the $1 raw oysters (can't remember where they are from so if yall can reply back to let me know!) they were good size, no ocean taste, very fresh. The mushroom tempura was my favorite. My kid enjoyed the chicken udon (but too much chicken in it!) The mussels were too saucy..remove half the sauce and I bet it'll still be good. Forgot about the $2 tacos, loved those too! Definitive coming back regardless.

Karin K.

Yelp
Sushi is good and the restaurant was clean HOWEVER the LOUD club music fails the whole experience... we twice asked to the techno music to be lowered but no response. It would be more pleasant if we could have a more relaxed and peaceful atmosphere.
google avatar

Ryan T.

Yelp
I honestly have never been here but always order takeout. We get Agedashi tofu, tempura, karate chicken, rice, miso, and a random roll for us to try. The packaging is on point when it comes to all of those foods. Portions are normal. It's been consistent quality for the value. Apparently it's closed for renovations so I hope they open soon because it's one of a few of my favorite Japanese spots to order takeout when I don't wana leave the house.

Yelp
Booked a resveration for a Friday evening, after a nice day at the beach. We were greeted warmly when we walked in, and quickly escorted to our table. We sat at a regular table, although we noticed that there were some tables that we low to the ground for seating and also some private karaoke rooms in the back. Our waitress let us know that it was happy hour for 15 more minutes and gave us a menu for us to look over. The waitress came back about 5 minutes later, and we ordered several items from the happy hour menu. I really appreciated this because the happy hour deals were really good, and the waitress made sure that we were able to take advantage. We ordered the gyoza, miso soup, spicy tuna roll, spicy salmon roll, and California roll from the happy hour menu. We also ordered the Yasai tempura, negi hamachi, thunder roll, dragon roll, angry bird, hawaii roll, and spicy tonkatsu ramen. All of the rolls were incredibly fresh and delicious. My favorite were the spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls, which definitely had a nice level of spice to them. The gyoza were also really good, and perfectly pan-fried. The tempura was nice and light, with a nice crunch. I didn't try the ramen myself, but the two people at the table that got it said it was some of the best broth that they've ever had. This is now our new go-to ramen spot for sure. Overall, excellent food in a nice location. Parking can be a bit tough since it's street parking only, but fortunately we got lucky on the parking. I'd definitely recommend this place for fresh sushi and great ramen.
google avatar

Steve H.

Yelp
Great food, service, and ambiance. The $1 oysters are a steal. The ramen is delicious. They have these cute booths that you take off shoes to go in.

Malica N.

Yelp
Review for their HH menu only- We happened to be nearby during their HH so decided to give them a try. We got their chicken karaage, crispy mushroom, and Godzilla roll. These were all good, nice and crispy and breading had good flavor. The reason I give them 3 stars is for their dollar oyster. It tasted bland, and the texture was... gooey? It's a dollar, so I didn't expect top tier oyster, but I don't think I'd even pay a dollar for these. It ruined our appetitive and we were reluctant to order their fish given the quality of their oysters.
google avatar

Michelle S.

Yelp
Went here after watching a comedy show at Neck of the Woods and I was surprised with the quality, and presentation. It's definitely more of a fancy place in the middle of a non-fancy street, but that's basically SF for you! The oysters were fresh and tasted sooo good and I really liked the interesting way they did the sushi with the sweet sauce. Service here was pretty fast and did not really have to wait too long for my order.

Hannah H.

Yelp
This is an absolute gem for affordable sushi! The restaurant and ambiance is clean and newly renovated, the food selection is diverse, affordable and delicious! they are open later than a lot of places in the city, can't recommend enough!

Yelp
Love love this place! Especially the happy hour. Lots of variety to choose from. Fresh nigiri and tastes so good. Appetizers came in hot. Sake always hits. Quick service and kind workers. Love the Japanese style seating.

Yelp
So tasty and pretty good price. Not the cheapest in the city but definitely worth going to.

Yelp
This review is purely for DoorDash order. If I'm being completely honest, I have nothing positive to really say about this location. I DoorDash Sakesan quite often and since this location was closed for a bit, my orders were coming from the Ocean location. Love the Ocean location, not so much Richmond location. I DoorDashed it today for dinner and noticed the distance from the restaurant was less than normal. That's when I realized it's coming from Richmond because they finally reopened after closed for a bit. When my food arrived, it looked normal and decent. Then I noticed there did not give me any wasabi. Wasabi is vital for me when eating raw fish so that already ruined my expectations and cravings. I'm still going to eat it without the wasabi because it was not cheap. As I was eating it, I noticed the fish quality was not fresh. Slices of the sashimi were super thin and tasted very mediocre. The more I ate it, the more I started feeling nauseous. Overall the quality and portion sizes were not it for me. Unfortunately, I am only able to access this location due to distance. This order truly ruined my experience when ordering Sakesan on DoorDash.

Yelp
Newly renovated and just reopened. The place looks familiar but with a new beautiful and clean face lift! There is so much more space and now the outside tables are lower and open. Menus are familiar with a few additions and now they are laminated which means no more writing in the orders. The layout is much more fluid and spacious. Bathrooms are clean and inviting. We all feel the importance of monitored restrooms! I would highly recommend making reservations because there is no more wait area.

Yelp
Always wanted to try this place, and finally did. We made a reservation since we weren't sure how busy it would be, but it was quite empty on a (I think) Friday evening. Agedashi tofu - 5/5, really flavor sauce over super soft and delicious fried tofu. Everyone loved this. Grilled squid - 5/5, grilled to perfection! Not super chewy; great texture and flavor. Another favorite among the table! Omakase - 5/5, honestly I think this was my absolute favorite. We shared a 20-pc among 6 people, so we didn't get to try each type of fish. But the ones we did try, man they were so good. The slices of fish were pretty big and tasted fresh. Everything else I think was pretty standard for udon and sushi (I don't remember exactly what we ordered, but I didn't hate anything). If I were to return, I would definitely get the three mentioned above and go during happy hour.

Yelp
One of my ALL time favorite sushi restaurants in San Francisco! I very much enjoy their DOLLAR oysters. My boyfriend and I usually start off with a pitcher of Sapporo (on tap) and hot sake. I honestly could eat two dozen of oysters on my own, but to be ladylike (jk) we opted for a dozen and a half :) We also like to come in during HAPPY HOUR, I don't know who doesn't? Lol. Love that they have a projector with different genre of karaoke music on. They do offer private karaoke rooms as well. We did that once and that's why I love this restaurant so much! Let's get to what we ordered: A pitcher of Sapporo, Hot sake, Raw Oysters, Blue Fin Tuna Tasting (a must order, so so so delicious it melts in your mouth!) Spicy Salmon Roll, Spicy Tuna Tartare Tacos, Spicy Albacore Tartare Tacos, Tayoyaki, and Jalapeño Poppers. (Not ordered during this visit, but many other times. We usually also order the Gambler Roll (we like all our pieces spicy, Iykyk), Aloha Roll, Hamachi Carpaccio, A5 Japanese Waygu Yaki Nigiri, Salmon Nigiri & the 8 pieces assorted sashimi)

Yelp
Had some delicious happy hour sake, rolls, and dollar oysters. We sat at the bar and had excellent service.
