Sakurako Omakase Restaurant Opens in Komasa Space in LA’s Little Tokyo | Eater LA

"At the former Komasa space on Second Street I encountered chef Kimiyasu’s latest omakase, Sakurako, which centers on a low L-shaped wood counter that seats nine (the restaurant is currently seating only at the bar). The team includes head chef Akira Yoshida, master chef Tatsuki Kurogi, and pastry chef Shota Takaki; Kurogi opens service with six to seven composed appetizers informed by his training at kappo-style Kigawa and kaiseki-style Nadaman and by sourcing from local farmers markets. Starters are presented like table art and can include komatsuna in dashi broth, wagyu roast beef with egg yolk sauce and watercress, shrimp with baby turnip, kabocha and snap peas, pickled dried squid and kelp, and deep-fried sawagani river crabs (so fresh that, as noted, they once escaped their container and crawled around the kitchen). Sashimi plates may feature king mackerel with onion sauce, flake salt and fresh wasabi alongside amaebi, uni sauce and caviar. Yoshida then delivers a parade of seasonal nigiri sushi — the main focus of the omakase — and was recently serving the season’s first bluefin tuna chu-toro overshari after training at a range of Michelin-starred restaurants in Japan and at Sakai in Frankfurt. Takaki, who spent a decade as a pastry chef in Kumamoto, serves fully plated desserts such as a honey and kumquat mousse topped with orange slices and finger biscuits, dotted with raspberry sauce and dried kumquat. Beverage options are a curated selection of craft beer, small-producer sake and wine with pairings planned for the future. Sakurako offers seatings on Tock at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday to Sunday for $250 per person before tax, beverages and tip (a $100 deposit is required), with limited walk-ins; the report also lists reservations on Tock for $280 per person." - Matthew Kang

The mall has decent shopping options, but then again nothing much that really shouts uniqueness. That said, it's well put together, modern, and well organised. Would've been good to have more unique food options available though, we found ourselves mainly heading out for food and only dropping by for Family Mart and Daiso.

End June 2025. It is excellent place with strategic location- it is near the shopping arcade, the castle and some other tourist spots. It itself is a shopping mall with food court, supermarket and restaurants. Better still it is connected to bus terminals where you can take buses to airport and couple of other places. It has a rooftop garden where you can enjoy walking around and look at different views. There is also an eatery shop in the garden and a small interesting shallow pool for kids to play with water. Entrance is free✌️. Koko hotel is together with this shopping mall. There is a tram stop just next to this mall. You can find Daisu shop in here too.

During my visit to Kumamoto, have visited the Sakuramachi place very convenient location with Kumamoto Castle in the near by and it is very of the center point for the tourist as well as local people to relax, do the shopping and enjoy the food. When I visited, there was Taiwan fare going on just outside the place and it was very energetic atmosphere. Must visit the place when there, during the June timings you can see the Hydrangea flowers and an amazing rooftop view of the Kumamoto castle as well.

Loved this place very much! Went many times during our 4-day stay in Kumamoto. Kids did their painting on the car and bus as part of the game in front of the building.

We used this mall as our car park for our day trip to Kumamoto City. In front of the mall there were some food stalls set up for some kind of rice festival when we were there. On our way home we bought some fresh produce from the supermarket. Nicely laid out mall.

Sakuramachi is a convenient location for locals, travelers, and shoppers alike. It offers a great balance of shopping, relaxation, and transport convenience, making it a one-stop destination for everyone. What sets it apart is the rooftop garden which features a massive Kumamon, Kumamoto Prefecture’s famous mascot. Kumamoto’s beloved mascot adds a fun and instagram-worthy element. This and the green space add a special touch that makes Sakuramachi unique. However, one issue often pointed out is the parking space, which is quite expensive. But despite this setback, it is still a highly recommended spot for locals and tourists.
