The Best Sushi Restaurants in Portland and its Suburbs | Eater Portland

"This sushi and yakitori restaurant serves standard rolls like spicy tuna and futomaki, but the menu gets creative with specialty rolls rooted in a sense of place, like the seared wagyu beef Plains roll or the vegetarian Valley roll, which brims with grilled shishitos and zucchini. Diners will also find seasons reflected in rolls, like the refreshing Spring (yellowtail, yuzu dressing, micro cilantro) or crisp Winter (snow crab, apple, scallop, orange marmalade)." - Zoe Baillargeon

Sakura Yakitori & Sushi Opens in Happy Valley, Oregon - Eater Portland

"At Sakura Yakitori and Sushi, the new Happy Valley Japanese restaurant from the team behind Wasabi Sushi, a giant faux cherry blossom tree draws the attention of diners as they wait for a table. Sitting down at long banquettes, they order appetizers like tempura and gyoza, followed by donburi topped with barbecued eel, miso-glazed salmon, or thinly shaved beef. But as the name of the restaurant declares, the bulk of the menu is devoted to two sections: sushi and yakitori, the latter of which literally translates to grilled chicken, but also refers to the style of cooking that involves skewered and grilled foods." - Janey Wong

First time visit!! Taylor was a dream and very friendly and helpful. The flavors were awesome and the uniqueness of the rolls gave a flavorful pop and taste. My go to of dragon and rainbow rolls were met with great presentation and were really yummy. I was able to get back two times before heading back to the Midwest. Awesome experience

Google
This place was on my list and was so glad we could finally make it for dinner. The menu is large enough that you’ll need to peruse through it a few times but not overwhelming. And, the Sake list is impressive too. Also, with the modern decor and ample seating mixed with a wonderful staff always makes for a wonderful dining experience. Food✅Service✅Atmosphere✅ Mahalo Sakura Yakitori and Sushi!!!🤙🏽

Google
Sushi was so fresh & wonderful and the wait staff was amazing! Seriously nice people. We ordered the Plains ( which we will order every time from now on ) Spicy Tuna Roll and the Red Snapper. I woke up the next morning thinking about how much we enjoyed that meal. Atmosphere was beautiful! Well done, I applaud the owners for their beautiful and delicious creations. Thank you, Charlie.your service was exceptional. We're going to become regulars

I finally got the chance to come here for a meal to celebrate a friend's belated birthday. The interior is nice and spacious, with outside seating available. The decor is nicely done and gives you that nice peaceful vibes. We ordered a good amount of food to share, with the majority being non-seafood. We practically ordered album all of the yakitori and skewer items and were not disappointed. I think my favorite of the skewers were the beef ribeye, wagyu, the Nomo, and pork belly. I also enjoyed their house special Udon stir fry, gyudon, and Plains roll (with wagyu). It is also to be noted that their bathroom has a changing station for parents (this is something that I really appreciate as a parent). The service was wonderful and friendly. Overall, it's definitely worth checking out.

Google
This beautiful place is truly a delight. Everything I tried was incredibly fresh and flavorful—miso soup, edamame, sake toro nigiri, hamachi nigiri, and even the avocado roll, which turned out surprisingly good. The atmosphere was simply amazing—calm, welcoming, and full of good energy. I’ll definitely be coming back!

Google
Tucked away in a stunning location, this gem exudes tranquility and refined charm. We indulged in the miso salmon, unagi don, winter sushi, and wagyu sushi, each dish was exquisitely prepared and elegantly presented. The service was gracious and attentive, striking the perfect balance of professionalism and warmth. A pot of delicate, aromatic green tea complemented our meal beautifully. It was the ideal intimate setting for a chic birthday celebration, just the two of us, enjoying a serene escape from the everyday. I wholeheartedly recommend this spot for those who appreciate elevated dining experiences. Admittedly, I left my I.D., so a return visit is absolutely in order, this time, to explore their curated selection of premium sake

Good food, good service, pleasant atmosphere and decor. We had a wonderful lunch. The food and drinks were beautifully presented and delicious.

Google
First time visit. Loved it. Food was exceptionally delicious. We ate several apps, yakitori, 2 types of spicy tuna. Moshi ice cream for my birthday dessert. Next time I'll try the outside dining. Thank you for a great dining experience!

Yelp
This. Is. My. New. Favorite. Sushi. Spot! Walking in the vibe is relaxed, the cherry blossom tree in the middle is pretty, and the rest of the decor puts you at ease. The music is nice, and you're welcomed kindly by staff and seated (quickly). The menu was pretty amazing, and had some really great options for kids that may not be feeling too adventurous. The steamed gyoza was on point and didn't need dipping sauce. The cocktail was a nice blend of sweet, and tart, with that small hint of bitterness from the liquor. The sushi rolls! I love my unagi! All of the rolls I had were fresh, delicious, and the temperature perfect. Sushi is a fine balance when there are warm components in the roll, and they nailed it. The rice wasn't too sweet, and formed beautifully. Then the explosion of flavor! Yes, it was delicious. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Food: the name says it. They have sushi, grilled vegetables, fish, and vegetarian options. Try the yaatori ( grilled vegetables) : The sauce is a bit spicy but flavorful. Zucchini - good Asparagus - good when in season Okra- little dry Mushrooms- chemically taste Eggplant don bowl- interesting Vegetarian sushi: Garden roll special- my favorite Valley rolls -bit spicy but good! Sweet tofu roll -decent Nigiri: Tamago sweet- nice Inari -classic Avo -hosomaki classic-good, and pretty too

Yelp
Ordered their catering option for a work lunch. To start, I had trouble finding a sushi place with a catering menu so I was very happy to find sakura. Got 2 sushi platters and their karage. The platters were beautifully displayed and they provided plenty of different soy sauce options and wasabi/ginger chop sticks and napkins. I haven't dined in here yet but when picking up the food the interior looked very cute, would be a nice place to grab lunch/dinner and I intend to be back to dine in

Yelp
Decent sushi and yakitori spot in HV. We've dined here a few times and the service has always been great! They have an outdoor patio too for the warmer days/evenings. We really like the spicy salmon crispy rice and there is a good selection of rolls. My favorites are the fall and dragon. The donburi bowls are also pretty good! Wonderful ambiance inside and food comes out pretty quick.
google avatar

Yelp
This quickly became one of our favorite sushi spots after they opened. Tasty rolls, nigiri and crispy rice and we like a lot of the Yakitoris (they are occasionally misses- sometimes meat is too fatty or veggie a bit off in texture but usually good). The decor is nice, love the tree, and the service is always quick and friendly. There's dessert and wine spots nearby which is convenient as well for a family or date night.

Yelp
I love this restaurant! Our server was super nice and sat us down right next to the cherry blossom tree. The interior was so cute and can be seen as both formal or family friendly. We started off with some drinks and I would say that the Spiked Matcha Latte is definitely my favorite as it's on the sweeter side. The Matcha Daiquiri comes second because I love matcha and it was really good. For entree's, you have to get the crispy rice. The spicy salmon crispy rice had a perfect balance between fish and rice. It was so delicious my mouth is watering just thinking about it. And the salmon belly was really good as well and tasted so fresh. Definitely worth giving this place a try!!!
google avatar

Ciarra L.

Yelp
Food- overall food is pretty good. Shrimp Tempura is nicely done- juicy shrimp with a nicely done crust. The dipping sauce- not sure what it was but it's paired nicely with those. Gyoza- chicken was pretty tasty as well. Little crispy with a slight softness. There are other meat options- just can't remember but also veggie. I got a Classic California roll- it's nicely done as well, I think next time I'd get the $15 one. We ordered Shirley Temples because those are on the menu- they're alright. I prefer mine to be fizzy- this one wasn't super fizzy. Service- is overall pretty good. Bartender was friendly and definitely checked in with my friend enough to make sure everything was good. Servers are nice and will also compliment the menu choices. Ambiance- the overall dining experience is nice. You need reservations because otherwise you'll sit at the bar or what tables they have left. Would I return? Yes, trying later items.

Yelp
best soft shell spider crab rolls with real crab and soft shell crab so buttery and refreshing compared to other sushi places in Portland/Beaverton region and futomaki (V) rolls are also highly recommended friendly service and free birthday dessert that was so delicious!! highly recommend this place other things we ordered like ika tempura was not as good as expected though crunchy, tasted more the dough more Modern interior design

Yelp
As soon as I stepped in, I was captivated by the restaurant's contemporary ambiance and the Sakura tree. The sleek decor, subtle lighting, and tasteful use of open windows create a welcoming and visually appealing space. One aspect that truly stood out during my visit was the friendly and attentive service. The staff at Sakura Yakitori and Sushi went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and well taken care of. They were knowledgeable about the menu and offered great recommendations. Moving on to the food, while it was indeed decent, it leaned slightly towards the pricey side. The yakitori and sushi selections were good, but I expected a bit more in terms of flavor for the yakitori. I ordered the hatsu, sunagimo, wagyu beef, pork belly, and salmon and my favorite had to be the wagyu beef because it offered the most flavor. The yakitori sauce did not seem to be well-marinated or just tasted very light. That being said, the ingredients tasted fresh, and the presentation was commendable. My favorite dish had to be the Summer roll - great balance between ingredients and fish.

Yelp
After a third visit, I can confirm that their customer service is excellent. The staff members are attentive and timely with consistently checking in on us including before and after the arrival of the food. The shiitake mushroom ($5) was seasoned and grilled with a delicious sauce. Lots of umami flavor that I really enjoyed. Very sweet. Futomaki ($12) contains cucumber, avocado, pickled daikon, burdock, roasted bell pepper, and radish sprouts! The nori on top of the roll gives each bite a crunch. Overall, the futomaki was crunchy due to the raw vegetables. The avocado roll is self-explanatory! Tastes like what it should sound like. Lemon drops were yummy too.

Yelp
We finally tried this place and now wish we would have sooner! We visited on a Saturday night. They seemed busy but we didn't have to wait. Taylor was our server, she was great! The dragon and summer rolls were amazing, we'll definitely have them every visit. It's nice to know we have a reliable sushi place in HV. We will be back.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place, but was a bit disappointed. Walking in, the restaurant is a bit reminiscent of the very popular Janken in downtown Portland due to their choice of decor and the Sakura tree in the middle of the restaurant. It gives the restaurant a very beautiful and romantic ambiance. They also had plenty of seating, from high-tops, lounge seats, and outdoor seating. The staff was very kind the whole time. My partner and I ordered a number of skewers, two handrolls, and plates of karaage, tempura, and calamari. The karaage, calamari and tempura were alright--nothing out of the ordinary. The skewers were also okay. However, with the quality, I wouldn't have expected the price to be as high as it was. The wagyu was mediocre, but if I did have to recommend two skewers from what I had, I thought the scallops and the gyu enoki were amazing. I was very excited for the otoro handroll and while it was very good and the portion was great, they forgot about my order and took about 30 minutes to make the handroll. Overall, the restaurant left me with a lot to still be desired and from what I've read from other reviews since, the restaurant seems to be more famous for its sushi rolls.

Yelp
I've been here many many times since they've opened. I love bringing out of town guests or taking friends here for birthdays or just because. Food is always excellent and service is great! Love the Sakura team!

Yelp
The restaurant was so pretty! I loved the cherry blossom tree in the center. The wait staff were kind and quick, we hardly had to wait at all for our dishes once we finished ordering. Restaurant itself felt like a casual lunch in spot. The yakitori was good. We ordered the quail egg wrapped in pork belly, gizzard, rib eye, and heart. The sauce they use for the glaze over the grill is slightly sweet but not overly so that the taste of the grilled meat still comes through nicely. The ribeye was cooked perfectly, super juicy and tender. The gizzard and heart were tasty, not tough at all as I was expecting them to be. The quail egg and pork belly was good, I was worried it would be too fatty but it was thin pork belly. I wish the quail egg could've been a soft boiled though, to give another texture. The egg is cooked through. We ordered two rolls, one with wagyu and another was the soft shell crab. They were both fine, not amazing but not bad. I'm not a huge asparagus in sushi type of person, but it wasn't bad. Lastly we ordered a few nigiri pieces, tuna belly, salmon belly, and ama ebi sweet shrimp. Sweet shrimp was good, on the smaller side. They seem to have fried the heads in maybe rice flour, so the fry isn't really that well done. It was lightly fried but had a powdery taste. The salmon belly I had higher hopes for. It wasn't nearly as rich, and had a fishier taste which was surprising since salmon isn't normally too fishy. The tuna belly though was absolutely delicious! Perfect fatty bite. Overall was nice to try out.

Yelp
So good my son gave it a 45° bow! The service was prompt, the drinks were delicious and the food hit the spot. Everything was fresh and served as soon as the chef cooked it. The inside is so cool too. I love the cherry blossom tree inside the restaurant too.

Yelp
Wonderful first time experience here. I came in and was greeted by a cherry blossom tree in the middle. Luckily, we had a table right by the cherry blossom tree. That was fun. The sushi was excellent. The Kumo and Spring Rolls were my favorites. Everything was definitely delicious. Didn't want to overstuff myself. It was a very nice atmosphere overall.
google avatar

Yelp
5/5 for food, service & ambiance! Very chic place. When you first come in, there's a faux cherry blossom tree that's very beautiful. The waitress was extremely helpful & gave us a few suggestions (in which we took) She recommended some Yakitoris'. We got the Asparagus wrapped in pork belly & the wagyu, which were both delicious. The summer roll was our favorite!! We also ordered the classic roll & it didn't disappoint. Highly recommend this sushi restaurant, we plan on returning to try more on the menu

Yelp
Stopped by on a soft opening today, and was so impressed. The menu is fantastic. I ordered salmon, yellow tail, and tuna and was blown away. Sakura might be just opening but they are on it already. I'm excited as the rival some of portland better sushi spots and it's just up the road from me. Parking is easy to find, it's In a shared lot that has plenty of space. There's plenty of stealing at all levels, high and low, bench, and chair. As well as plenty of space for you your food, and more. Service was fantastic, the staff were all kind and eager to serve. I'm excited to come back and make this my local sushi spot!
google avatar

Yelp
Great service and tasteful atmosphere in Happy Valley. The outside seating is surrounded by a water feature and great when the sun is out. All of the sushi rolls were quality and not your run of the mill conveyer belt taste.
google avatar

Sydney L.

Yelp
At the suggestion of a friend, I decided to check out Sakura, although I missed their happy hour. I ordered a few Yakitori skewers and a selection of sushi rolls to share with my friends. The Yakitori skewers had a nice grilled flavor, and the sushi was fresh and served in decent portions for our group of three. It was just enough to fill us up. The prices, however, seemed a bit on the higher side, making me contemplate a return during happy hour for a more budget-friendly experience. Sakura's ambiance was certainly more upscale compared to your typical sushi joint, which added a touch of sophistication to the meal. As for the service, it was decent, neither outstanding nor poor. In conclusion, Sakura offered a satisfactory dining experience, although the pricing may encourage me to explore their happy hour options in the future. The restaurant's upscale atmosphere and decent service made for a comfortable evening, even if it didn't leave me overly enthusiastic.

Yelp
Was able to make same-day reservation on a Sunday. Around 5PM it's not crowded. It gets a little busier around 6pm. Food and presentation is good. Yummy. Service is great. Super friendly staff. Reason why I rated it a 4 is because it is a bit over priced. Some stuff is priced right while others aren't. I understand fish can be spendy. I get that. But over all I enjoyed it. Food came out quick and hot. They will even let you pick out the dessert for a birthday celebration. Crepe cake was so yummy.
google avatar

Yelp
Lobster Roll and Crispy Sushi. Delicious. Great service. Beautiful place and very accommodating. We all had different drinks and got them quickly. I will be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly staff and inviting atmosphere. Our waiter explained the menu well. The skewered meats and vegetables were pricey. Sushi rolls were visually nice and filling.

Yelp
We went here to celebrate a great basketball game. My 6 year olds team only lost by 10, but SHE had a really nice assist and scored a basket as well!!! Proud grandma moment! We ordered a couple of appetizers, that were all fabulous, though I wish the edamame had had a little more salt and maybe a little sesame oil. The grand daughter absolutely loved one of the potstickers (Sorry I can't remember the actual name, but it was chicken and vegetable and really tasty, Well, at Least the half of one I shared with my daughter in law. ;) we also had a chicken appetizer that was enough for a meal and really tasty! Between the 3 adults we had 3 different sushi rolls and enjoyed them all. My son also had the beef garlic yakitori and loved it! All the flavors were fresh and I love That the ginger isn't dyed. We did not have any alcoholic drinks but they have a full bar. The staff was very sweet and helpful. It's a great place To relax and enjoy some yummy nibbles.

Yelp
The best sushi I've tasted, and I've had sushi in Japan! The service is top notch! A very warm and welcoming environment. This excellent sushi restaurant gets my highest recommendation.

Dan H.

Yelp
Very good selection of traditional Japanese dishes Great service and delicious meal Quiet and laid back

Linda H.

Yelp
Great service and great sushi. We had the tempura calamari that was perfect- delivered hot, tempura was light and not greasy at all. Our drinks were a generous pour , made with quality ingredients. Really enjoyed the atmosphere.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Great food! The tuna and salmon nigiri were delish. Shared a shrimp tempura with edamame and there was very little wait time for food. The plains specialty roll was very good too. Definitely a must try if you are looking to have a beef option as well. Waiter was really nice and helpful. Was able to close the place down and not feel rushed at all. Wonderful place to go late at night and still enjoy a wonderful meal.
google avatar

Yelp
Not interested in serving us when it was 40 min to close. Sales prevention!! We even said we would eat fast and tip good ‍
google avatar

Yelp
If you like wine and live in Happy Valley, this is a must! We came for lunch and got the charcuterie plate and shrimp dish. Great spread, solid shrimp. I would say you come here for the wine and there are some bites to enjoy while you're there. Definitely worth a try, and maybe even the membership
google avatar

Julia K.

Yelp
Beautiful atmosphere, the cherry blossom tree is- wow! The sushi was fresh and delicious, will come back for more!

Mia B.

Yelp
We have been to this spot a few times but we're disappointed in the food tonight. It was just very average on all marks for high price points. We tried the Ika tempura, this is and should be a skip for everyone. Bland. 0/10. Hamachi carpaccio was a 5/10. The highlight of the meal was the spring roll, and even then that roll is a 7/10. We got a chefs selection of nigiri, the salmon which is usually a go to for us on that plate didn't even taste like salmon. Overall 4/10. Spicy tuna roll was cheaper and delicious. Miso soup 6/10. Just a bummer we spent so much on food expecting the quality to match, and it didn't. Service however is always great, very nice and fast. Ambiance is beautiful.

Yelp
first time here this weekend & wish i came sooner! we were greeted by nice staff & a beautiful pink cherry blossom tree at the front. we ordered one of the daily specials which was Crispy Sticky Rice w/ Spicy Salmon. that was delicious! our #1 that night. our #2 was the Summer Roll which was fresh & had great flavors. the Dragon Roll was #3 for us. it wasn't bad but i'm not a fan of fish skin personally. for a drink, i got the Sake Sangria. it had fresh, fruity & bright flavors! definitely would get that again. great experience from all aspects. i would recommend others to give this place a try!

Yelp
So excited for a sushi place on this side of town! The restaurant itself is beautiful with garage doors that pull open when the weather is nice out. They do have outdoor seating and the interior is super pretty as well. With that said, there are some kinks that still need to be worked out. I am giving 4 stars bc the restaurant is still so new and the multiple servers expressed that they are still learning but the attempt is there. The food came out a little slow but hopefully that was just due to the restaurant just opening. The chef's choice sashimi platter had beautiful fresh fish on it but it was dropped off with no explanation of what the fish were on it. We asked 2 people who didn't know, they got someone else who told us the incorrect types of fish, and then another person who came out identified them correctly finally and seemed knowledgeable enough that he was probably a sushi chef. Chicken karaage was okay but not amazing. Prawn and scallop Yakitori were delicious. They had what looked like lime zest on them and it added a nice flavor. I liked the micro greens garnish as well. The chicken gizzard, however, was the concern. It was very undercooked which honestly grossed me out. It also just tasted chewy and tough. But the servers were really nice about it and the manager came out to apologize as well and we got our Yakitori comped and new ones made which was super nice. That meant a lot and I definitely am still going to be back to give it another shot. Looking forward to trying some other items and would definitely order sushi again.

Yelp
The decorations like the Sakura tree and peaceful atmosphere draw you in to the Sushi but the amazing quality of the food and artistic presentation keeps you here. The service was polite and consistent checking on my family and if anything was needed to make our time better. Highly recommended any day of the week but if you plan on going into clackamas or heading out to Mt.Hood this is the place to be.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been missing good sushi since moving here and I'm so glad I found this place! When you walk in, you're greeted with a gorgeous space with a giant fake Sakura tree which adds to the whimsical vibe. The service was great, we were able to order at a pace we were comfortable with. We started with cocktails, which were so good, and the crispy tofu, which was immaculate. We then had two sushi rolls and when I say I've never had sushi like this, I mean that not only was it fresh but it was also a fresh spin on the flavors. They had the typical sushi ingredients, but they had to put something else extra in there that gave it an extra umph. The Spring sushi roll is seriously the best sushi roll I have ever tasted. So happy this is close to my house and reasonably priced.

Caty W.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our first visit at Sakura Yakitori & Sushi house. The ambiance was relaxed and not too stuffy. Our server was attentive but not overbearing. We ordered 4 sushi rolls and an appetizer and it was the perfect amount of food. The sushi tasted fresh and their little additions of microgreens and fried shallots added depth of flavor - we savored every bite. The yuzu sake went really great with our selection. Looking forward to visiting again!

Yelp
After reading an article in the Happy Valley news my husband and I decided to try this new restaurant. Well we where not disappointed. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was great. The service was top notch and the servers very pleasant and helpful. We can't wait to go back

Yelp
What I like about the place is the decor and some of the dishes I got were pretty good, but some of them is mediocre at best. The purpose of this review is so that the management or ownership of the restaurant look at their current staffing and culture within the restaurant, I don't see smiles on anyone's faces, I didn't see our server until 5-10 minutes later not knowing who to order from. From the guest experience, I wouldn't go back, I don't need to restaurant seeing people looking bored, disengaged, or think too highly of themselves. Food was solid, I feel the pricing on the rolls is a bit too expensive for the quality.
google avatar

Laura N.

Yelp
The ambiance is relaxing, and the service is decent. While the food is displayed nicely, and the quality is ok, however it seems a little expensive for the quality. Perhaps the cost is related to opening a new business. Still, I would encourage someone to try it at least once and determine if the cost meets their own expectations.
google avatar

Aiden H.

Yelp
Sakura is a pleasant addition to Happy Valley dining. Their inner atmosphere is incredible and makes you feel as though you're in another place! Despite being brand new, service is very attentive and the food is incredible!! Delicious and appealing to the eye. Prices are a bit up there (especially for the yakitori) but I'm eager to return and try more things on the menu.

Yelp
The food is outstanding, friendly and fast service, beautiful decor, and you can't beat outdoor seating. I've eaten here four times and it gets better each time. I recommend their summer rolls!!
