The Best Restaurants In and Around Lakeview | Eater New Orleans

"Sala is a sleek restaurant and lounge owned by the Riccobono family, also owners of Cafe Navarre. They’ve dug into the neighborhood with specials like a Tuesday to Friday happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. with discounted drinks and nibbles. The food has lots of polish and flair — try the grilled shrimp spinach salad with blue cheese or panne veal topped with crawfish over pasta." - Beth D’Addono

Where to Eat the Best Soft Shell Crabs in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Head to the lakefront for fresh soft shells, as Creole-Italian bistro Sala just got them in this week (May 8). The family that’s brought you Riccobono’s Peppermill, Riccobono’s Panola Street Cafe, and Cafe Navarre does classics well at Sala too, so you can be sure they’ll do justice to the beloved soft shell." - Clair Lorell

Sala is a great restaurant any time of day. They have a wonderful brunch with creative and wonderful omelets! Happy Hour spans a few hours and has great bites and drink options. Dinner has nightly specials and my favorite is Tuesday night half price wine by the bottle. We have started to go more often as it is nearby. What draws us back however, is the food and service. Food is consistent, well prepared, has menu variety, and excellent value. We do not eat red meat yet never have an issue finding a wonderful meal. The specials are always interesting!! Atmosphere is pleasant and allows for conversation and everyone is over the top just nice.

Google
Great food. Large portions, I was surprised. Mimosas Craft was perfect . The chicken and waffles taste fresh and the waffle had a real good taste. The Crab & Bacon Omelet was the highlight of the meal. We enjoyed very much. Great service, will be back with more fam & friends.

Great place to get a bite to eat or drinks. I like how welcoming and friendly the atmosphere is. Happy Hour is the time I have visited.

Visited today and had a great experience! I love going to restaurants on the lake, I love being on the lake in general. Today was actually my first time after driving by this restaurant multiple times. While dinning, I only ordered small bites as I was passing time on the way to an event. I ordered the truffle fries + bang bang shrimp, and of course drinks. The shrimp were very tasty and good, some of the best bang bang shrimp I’ve had. The fries were really greasy but still fine— I probably wouldn’t order those again. Tiffany was at the bar on the drinks and she is great. My drinks were made perfectly. The atmosphere of this place is casual. It was dead today when I visited. I can see this restaurant being a nice meet up spot for friends. I’m looking forward to visiting again soon.

Google
What a great experience! Sala is a must if you are visiting the area! We returned to the restaurant often for various reasons. One, the food was always and is consistently fabulous. Two the wait staff and bartenders are the friendliest, happiest and most engaging I've experienced in a long, long time (every one of them). Sala has a nice and inviting atmosphere and a great place for quiet conversation with your dinner party. Highly recommend trying this restaurant. You will not be disappointed, and I believe you will be a repeat customer :)

Google
Friendly enough place. The service was good. The gumbo was a little bland. The grilled shrimp appetizer was delicious. On the atmosphere was kind of loud but We could hear each other speak. The desserts were over the top.

Google
First time making it to Sala and will return! Owner and managers checked in and thanked us for dining there. Really good drink menu and the food was excellent. Definitely want to return for brunch too Seared tuna appetizer is right size and delicious. Had to take advantage of the soft shell crab!

Google
Went for brunch and mimosas with some girlfriends. Mimosas were spot on and the atmosphere was casual. As a table of 8, a couple of the dishes were lukewarm, but the flavor of the food was impeccable.

Yelp
Our server was very nice, she was attentive and took good care of us. What I didn't care for was taking a 4 top and squeezing in to make 5. We already had a reservation so it shouldn't be a big surprise but I guess it was. For dinner I ordered a crawfish bisque. It was fair, nothing above average. I had a small meatball sized crawfish ball. Wasn't impressed. For my main course I ordered the Sala burger, medium. With cheese, egg, bacon, lettuce and tomato. It was very good except the bottom bun was soft and gooey. When are the chefs going to learn not to put the burger on the bottom bun without a piece of lettuce to prevent the grease from leaking through. Even with that small issue the burger was great. I'll be back again and try another dish.

Yelp
Good eats!! The two of us got ambitious. Appetizer: brussels sprouts, spinach and artichoke dip, herb truffle fries. Split an order of Gulf fish tacos. Entrees: she had Gulf fish almandine (today it was sheepshead) and I had about two bites of my panné veal, but only because I was so full! Everything was delicious. Nancy was absolute aces.

Yelp
First time here for Happy Hour and we had a great time. I ordered 2 Blueberry Lemon Drops and Bang Bang Shrimp during Happy Hour. The drinks is were strong and delicious! And the Bang Bang Shrimp were so flavorful! Our table order the Burger, spinach and artichoke dip and truffle fries. All were good! The staff were friendly and attentive! The other drinks we ordered were very good as well. My one complaint is that the air conditioning wasn't steady. It was either warm or freezing!

Yelp
Decided to go here for a birthday brunch. Made reservations online and was quickly seated when we arrived. It looked nice on the inside, and was glad we were seated at a booth. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. I had on my birthday headband and the waitress brought out an order of zeppole with a candle which was nice of her. It was really good, and I think it was the best thing we had there. Myself and another friend ordered the west end breakfast bowl, another ordered the traditional Benedict, and my other friend ordered the Lakefront BLT. The breakfast bowl was fine but very basic. Nothing special about it and we had to add some salt and pepper. My friend said the Benedict was good and my other friend said she enjoyed her BLT. They also said the strawberry lemonades were good. I'm not sure if I need to go back for brunch, but the dinner menu looks pretty good so I may go back for that.

Yelp
We love a good happy hour and nice outdoor seating when the weather is right ! I enjoyed the happy hour drinks with my spinach in artichoke dip.

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't left a review for this place yet. One of the most underrated places in New Orleans!!! A great place to feel fancy without breaking the bank. Service is always top notch. I've been coming to steak night on Wednesday's for about a year now. Such a steal!! Steak night is $35 per person and includes: An 8oz filet, loaded mashed potatoes, and a side salad. It's all SO delicious and i'm always SO full afterwards. Plus, if you go between 4-6 it's happy hour! So, double deals! One of the best deals in the city for sure.

Yelp
Blueberry on top of two pancakes were very good. I do wish blueberries were also in the pancakes. Service was very good. Our other dish was two eggs, biscuit and grits another very good breakfast plate. Inside is nice nothing fancy but nice and relaxing.
google avatar

Cheron P.

Yelp
We went for happy hour and that was a great choice! We had the bang bang shrimp which were banging. The truffle fries and we ordered the Brussels sprouts which wasn't apart of the HH. All great and filling. We have to come back for the Wednesday steak night special. Please don't make me rave about the tasty $6 blueberry lemon drops!! Food was delivered in a timely manner and waitress was attentive.

Yelp
I have come here two or three times and the food is always just mediocre. I want to like their menu especially when I heard they were bringing Riccobono's Peppermill breakfast back, but it just isn't the same. The Irish coffee was probably the only good tasting item I had on our most recent visit on March 30. The service was ridiculously slow. It took about 10 minutes to get drink orders in and then after we ordered 20 minutes after that, it took an hour before the food came out. No explanation or appolgies either. And the place was nearly empty with the exception of one large group of about 12 people. I ordered the smoked salmon benedict and honestly the salmon was so fishy, I just could not finish it and ate around it. I have come here for dinner as well, and again, mediocre. Their cocktails were spot on and it was Christmas themed cocktails, too! And the service was much better and ironically, the restaurant had more people dinning, go figure. It is a nice location and nice space, but I don't want to eat here anymore. They excel in making craft cocktails and if I come back, I will come back for one of their very well made and tasty cocktails.

Yelp
Went there for Sunday Brunch and everything was Nice ! Very relaxed ambiance and both the food and drinks were good . Shoutout to our server Sam. He took good care of us !

Yelp
I like Sala a lot and have beengping for years but I would be lying if I didn't say the quality of the food has been going down for years. The ambiance and the service is carrying the place bc the food is definitely an afterthought

Yelp
I started out with the king cake bites and an iced coffee which were both very very delicious. Note, they do give you cream and sugar in your iced coffee without asking which I enjoyed but it's not good for everyone. The food was pricey for what it was. My friends' brunch food was mid to good enough. My crab cake benedict was edible but not good. The poached eggs were more like softboiled, no runny yolk at all, and completely unsalted. The whole plate was extremely underseasoned. The crab cakes were soft and I couldn't detect much actual crab meat in them. Probably won't be back.

Yelp
I've been to Sala a number of times for both weekend brunches and dinners. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed. The service is excellent. My favorite brunch dishes are the eggs pontchartrain and the crab cakes Benedict. Both were excellent. For dinner, I've tried the shrimp tacos, the Sala burger, and the sesame soy seared tuna appetizer. All of the food has been well prepared and delicious.

Yelp
My family and I just tried to walk in on a Sunday morning. The restaurant was not even packed. They had plenty of tables inside and outside had no one but they stated that there was no room and that a bunch of people were coming from church ! Did not bother to tell us how long the wait is and brushed us off. The customer service was horrible!

Sherie D.

Yelp
Waitress was aweful. Arrived at 6:15. Did not greet us until 6:30, owner was talking to guests at table next to us and did nothing to get a waitress. Ordered an ice tea and beer, brought out 2 ice teas, ordered the house cured salmon board, brought to the table without crackers for the cheese and jalapeño peppers were under pickles, I am allergic to jalapeños, menu did not mention the jalapeños, ordered fish taco asked for the lettuce wraps as per menu, tacos brought out in tortillas, when I mentioned to waitress she offered to bring out the lettuce and said I could fix them. Son enjoyed the Brussels sprouts and the panned veal with crawfish. Service was horrible, waitress was not attentive when taking the order and did not check on us after food was brought out only to bring the bill. We have visited Sala in the past but this time it was horrible. Dropping 100 for a meal you expect better service.

Sting E.

Yelp
I have always LOVED hamburgers so much so that my Mom called me "Wimpy" as of Popeye the Sailor Man. I must say that the Burger at Sala is amazing!
google avatar

Yelp
Came to Sala with friends for brunch and it was excellent. Eggs perfectly cooked, great service and no long lines to get a table. I will be back.

Yelp
I was invited to Sala for a friend's birthday brunch and though it wasn't on my radar, Sala has become one of the best brunch restaurants that I've visited in NOLA. I had the delightful Diamante Margarita (she made it spicy for me) and the delicious Eggs Sardou Benedict with a side of Herb Truffle Fries & Lemon Aioli. The food & cocktails were delicious, the company was great, & our server was truly awesome - she was a lot of fun :)

Marion E.

Yelp
Great food and excellent service. Had the collinary menu and it was perfect. Not noisy and nice atmosphere. Will go again.

Brittney N.

Yelp
Absolutely terrible customer service!! I wanted to make a reservation for a Sunday brunch for 10 people. Man on phone said he could not make this happen since this was his busy time and "had to move chairs around for a big party"HA! We were frequent customers here with large parties in the past, but after this incident, we won't be giving Sala our service anymore!!

Yelp
It was a nice experience! The dining area is clean and modern with lots of white-ness lol. I would definitely suggest visiting during happy hour (Tues-Fri, 3-6pm)...the $6 classic clocktials and well drinks are worth it! I had the pineapple cilantro marg and added an extra well shot for more potency, lol. It was very tasty! The golden fried fish was pretty good..sort of "just regular" fried fish with a cream sauce but, a nice portion! The salmon board was nothing out of this world but, filling as well. Our server (a young man I believe name Phillip) was super friendly and attentive. He even went outside with me and my mom to do a mini photoshoot for us :-) I'd definitely go back on a weekday during happy hour for some small bites and a couple good drinks!

Cynde R.

Yelp
Oh my gosh! What a great find! Was with a friend just cruising the Lakefront area as it had been years. Randomly stopped into Sala prior to flight. The service was on time, professional but social, the place smelled great (I know that sounds weird, but often cleaning products overpower a dining space)! I had the seared tuna salad which likely ranks in the top three I've ever had...tuna was perfect, sesame dressing was light AND flavorful, the greens were super fresh. My dining partner had the crab cakes topped with egg accompanied by a side creamy grits. Both of us were delighted with our meal and the service! Do please treat yourself and go here for Saturday brunch!

Yelp
Great food and good vibes, does it get any better than that?! Recently went here for happy hour with a friend. Service was fast and drinks were plentiful. We tried so many different small plates but the standouts were the duck empanadas and sweet chili fried calamari. They have an extensive drink menu to try plus a full bar if you want to sick with your regular. I got a gin lemon drop and it did not disappoint. Great location with parking on the side. An not wait to try again.

Yelp
DDC - Dining During Covid... you already know!!!! (in my Big Freedia voice) Visited with my friend for a mid-day brunch & we happened upon Sala. Located in the West End area, this location is kinda like a little duck-off; if you know then you know. As I stated, the location is nice, a little compact because of the condos in the area & the amount of traffic, but this still is a nice place for a brunch or dinner. The indoor decorum is modern, minimalist & elegant; just like I like it. Seating is spaced out, which also adds to the appeal of the restaurant. Looks like this place could be on the cover of a "kinda sort of but not too ritzy restaurant" magazine. Once indoors we requested an outdoor table. However, it was advised that the only one that was vacant was actually set aside for a reservation, bummer. But, we were FAVORED enough to see a table that was becoming vacant, so we took that table... easy peasy lemony squeezy... Our server, brought water and menus to our table. We ordered drinks, when asked, he advised that the bottomless Mimosas were over at 2 o'clock so we opted to just order single drinks. Ordering was fairly simple, the menu was straightforward, one side was food, the other side was alcohol. We ordered the shrimp salad, it was delivered in a timely fashion it was good to taste & cost effective. The ambience of the exterior portion of the restaurant was just what we needed, fresh, balmy air on a Saturday afternoon. The drinks & the food went down well. My Mexican mule was quite tasty & lit my fire just right. Now... why 3 stars? THE SERVICE!!! CUSTOMER SERVICE IS KEY!!!! Our server was lackluster, unfriendly, yet not rude, just distant, unwelcoming & distracted; this took away from my dining experience. Maybe something was going on with him, but it was VERY noticeable, as my dining partner & I both commented on it. Too many places in THE NOLA BABY to eat to return here soon. Maybe when I return, he'll have his head in the game. Private parking lot is a plus. And I found the pricing to be industry standard.

Yelp
This hidden gem is the best happy hour spot! Their pineapple margaritas are the bomb!! We went 2 days in a row! The happy hour menus nice we had to order one of each the white cheddar cheese grilled cheese sandwich was my favorite! The calamari the spinach dip were big hits the bartender s so nice

Emily B.

Yelp
The service, ambiance, and drinks were great. We came for the first time for happy hour and ordered the spinach dip, bang bang shrimp, fries, seared tuna, crawfish soup, and calamari. The food was very mediocre and just lacked flavor and salt. The tuna had no flavor and just looked and tasted old. The calamari was rubbery and the breading fell off easily. The spinach dip and soup needed salt. The bang bang shrimp and fries were the best things we had. I'm glad we just tried a bunch of apps and didn't get some of the pricey entrees. I'd go back for the happy hour drinks and sit on the nice outdoor patio.
google avatar

Janine M.

Yelp
This review is for Happy Hour. I have been here a few times within the last few months for Happy Hour and I have enjoyed my experience each time. Each time I've come, I have ordered the delicious truffle fries and the white cheddar grilled cheese sandwich which is buttery with so much cheese it just oozed out. My last visit I also ordered the chicken tacos from the regular menu and they were really, really good. I've also had the PINEAPPLE CILANTRO MARGARITA and it is also really, really good. The service has been exceptional and I've never been left unattended. I like this spot because it offers outdoor seating right in front which is great after work because I can just relax and enjoy the surroundings. Bathroom was clean and there is plenty of parking in the adjacent lot or right in front.
google avatar

Ada M.

Yelp
I love the happy hour here. Such good deals for food and drinks. Also have a great Saturday brunch. I think the dinner menu items are a tiny bit overpriced for what you get, but still definitely a great spot.
google avatar

Ruby T.

Yelp
Best place in the city. If you haven't tried them you are missing out. The Manager/Owner Craig and his wife Nancy were so hospitable. We had a gathering for 21ppl and they found a way to make it work. The service was top-notch! The food reminded me of a restaurant we attended a few years ago called the Pepper Mill. So thankful for them accommodating our large party.

Janine B.

Yelp
I'm a frequent visitor! Absolutely love the ambiance, the servers & most importantly, the food. Always fresh & consistent! Consistency is key at restaurants...in my opinion!

Tafai B.

Yelp
One of the best and most refreshing, imaginative dining experiences to have in town. 11/10

Yelp
I actually come here all the time but today something is very wrong. The drink I got was so bad, I had to ask if the bartender was new. Then I ordered something different which I have had before, also so incredibly bad. On one of the rounds where we ordered two drinks, only one drink came to the table and the waiter told us the other drink was wasn't made yet bc the bartender had to go to the bathroom immediately. Then the drink finally came and there was only 1 ingredient, so we sent it back and it was remade with the rest of the ingredients. It was drinkable at that point but it begs the question, do I want this bartender touching the stemware if he is dropping everything to rush to the bathroom mid-pour? The waiter was completely uninterested in our experience so we had to leave and spend our Friday night somewhere else. Huge bummer because this place was one of my favorites. Addendum: We were charged full price for the happy hour drink and there was an upcharge on the regular price drink because they were out of the regular liquor used to make the drink. Honestly this place needs to do better.

Patricia E.

Yelp
It was my first visit to Sala and I wasn't disappointed. I ordered the Waffles & Chicken and the waffles were light and fresh. The hostess was welcoming. I will return.

Stanton M.

Yelp
Sala is consistently well above average in both food quality and service. We enjoy many of the menu items, especially the Sesame Soy Seared Tuna and Tuesday 1/2 Off Bottles of Wine Night.
google avatar

Chandler D.

Yelp
Missing brunch from Sala featuring their Crab Cake Benedict and the Eggs Pontchartrain with sautéed crawfish, mushrooms, and onions. The crab cakes were my favorite! Zeppole which are fried powdered sugar donuts with a cream cheese icing from& we didn't forget about the mimosas Brunch is Saturday & Sunday from 10-2. Bottomless Mimosas Saturday only.

Monique B.

Yelp
it started off as decent breakfast. But latley, it has gone down hill. Two days in a row simple fried eggs had to be returned to have them cooked correctly. Today, the crawfish omelette had 4 small tails for $18. Not good enough food for the location and price. So sad to see it go blah!!
google avatar

Adrianna P.

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant. Nice staff. The food was amazing. We went for coolinary everything was great from start to finish. The owner was nice and checked on us. Would go again.
google avatar

Greg M.

Yelp
Not bad, but not great. If Sala was downtown or uptown it wouldn't get a second look, but fortunately for them, they're in a part of town without much NOLA-worthy competition. The food and drinks were okay. We enjoyed the blueberry lemon drop martinis with truffle fries and sweet chili calamari for appetizers, with tuna salad, shrimp and chicken tacos for entrees. Nothing about any of them stood out. The service was the best part of the entire experience. The hostess and servers all did an excellent job. We planned to sit outside, but with virtually no atmosphere there, opted for the air conditioning inside. The vibe is casual and relaxed. You can see sailboat masts over the flood wall, but other than that you'd never know you're near the water.
google avatar

Lindsey B.

Yelp
We ate here with a big group. I was a little shocked at how the food was. The atmosphere is a little cheesy to me and our waiter and hostess were very disengaged but service wasn't bad? If that makes sense. Everything we ate was delicious . We got like every app on the menu and our wine choice was great.
google avatar

Patricia R.

Yelp
My husband and I visit Sala every few months and have always had good experiences. The restaurant is chicly decorated and I love that there are so many windows. We started with the salmon board, and it was excellent. The salmon was fresh, and the accoutrements were all delicious. We each wanted to eat light so for mains we went with salads. I had the grilled shrimp and spinach, and my guy had the seared tuna. They were both good, and helped us stay on task of not overeating. Our waiter was friendly and efficient, and we enjoyed our time.
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
Service is EXTREMELY important when you are trying a new restaurant. My husband and I arrived a little early for a reservation for 4 and was pleasantly surprised to be seated early however, 15 minutes passed before someone checked on us. It rapidly went downhill from there. The server (Phillip T.) was absolutely awful! The best way to describe him is unwelcoming; patronizing (never call black men "boy"); rushed; agitated and down right nice nasty. He has perfected giving nastiness with a smile. It was clear that he would rather clean toilets with his tongue than wait our table. The Food: The spinach dip was room temperature when it arrived at the table. My husband loved the crab & corn bisque The shrimp pasta was absolutely delicious! The cheesecake and chocolate cake were average. I WILL NEVER return. There are too many GREAT restaurants with FANTASTIC service in New Orleans to enjoy.

Brad K.

Yelp
Went for Sunday brunch. Food and service were so good we may become regulars! Wife had eggs benedict with grits and I had eggs enedict with potatos. We then shared a waffle (nicely served in four quarters so very easy to share. Wife had amimosa while I stayed with cranberry juice. All that plus tip for only $55. We'll definitely be back again.
google avatar

Kaitlyn L.

Yelp
I enjoyed eating dinner here. Sat at a high top table since I walked in with no reservation. Extremely quick service. They came out with everything very fast. 2 people ate in under an hour. Started with a salad. Good, but the only problem was that it was drenched in dressing. Like it was drowning in dressing. Also the dressing tasted like what I buy at the grocery store. I expected something house made. Basil crusted salmon was great. Vegetables on the side were good, but there was WAY too much garlic. I didn't realize it until after I took a giant bite of it. After that, everything I ate tasted like garlic the rest of the night. Chocolate cake was delish.
google avatar

Yelp
Originally came for culinary but ended up getting regular menu Entrees looked so good we couldn't resist Our waiter couldn't tell us about salmon board app but he looked about 17 so he was doing his best I got drum beur blanc it hit the spot Dad got tuna on salad We got less rich items but left satisfied such a wide array of entrees can't ho wrong

Yelp
Sala is the perfect place to go for a casual dinner. They have great happy hour options and reasonably priced food. Pictured is the fish almondie which i really enjoyed!
google avatar

Daezha B.

Yelp
Treated myself to a "self care Saturday" and this is where I decided to eat after looking through reviews. I sat at the bar and was taken care of by Woody (pretty cool guy). I began my dining experience with a glass of Prosecco and the crawfish bisque for an appetizer. Both were superb! For an entree, I had the Gulf Fish Beurre Blanc which was just "ok". The fish was pretty bland, but the sauce gave it some much needed flavor. I let Woody talk me into getting dessert as well (not pictured). I highly recommend the Zeppole! Omg, soooo good and perfectly textured. The warm icing is what won me over.

Yelp
Pandemic update: I was looking for outdoor dining that took reservations on Easter Sunday and Sala was open and had space on their front patio. The tables outside were nicely distanced from each other. Which was great since even post-vaccination, I worry about all the things. The staff was lovely. The three of us enjoyed our brunch items, and we opted for a carafe of mimosas rather than bottomless which worked well for the driver (me), a senior (mom) and a friend. I had eggs sardou which were good, mom really enjoyed her eggs pontchartrain and my friend liked her Kentucky hot brown, plus we ordered fruit cups and a biscuit. The fruit cups were more like finger food for children but otherwise OK. Staff was masked and the tables were well spread. Indoor dining was happening, including as large groups.
