Salem Hospital

I go here regularly for testing and it's always clean and bright. The staff are courteous, friendly, and more often than not, cheerful. I can't speak to the emergency room experience, but the lab and other testing departments are great.

Takes hours now that the people of Lynn are here. They are currently ignoring droplet isolation policies and the patient I am here with is a diabetic with many breathing problems among other conditions and I have a heart condition and asthma myself among other issues and getting sick like this patient is can turn deadly quickly for us and we still have to care for my special needs brother at home. They didn’t account for my family whatsoever when they ignored these protocols.

I've read quite a few reviews and I understand people's frustration and understand where there coming from so they give 1 star review but in my case it was different. I just had surgery the other day and everyone was incredible. Doctors and nurses made me feel comfortable, catered to my needs. When it was time to leave, never felt rushed. It was take your time, go slow. Go when you're ready.

My wife was treated for bloodclots in one of her legs. The procedure was successful and we were treated well by all the staff, but one exceptional shining star was Dr. Fatima Charara. She took the time to address all of our concerns and dropped by several times to check in on us. Each and every time her bedside manner was exceptional and she displayed a genuine concern for our welfare.

This place should be shut down. I've never had a good experience here. My bp was 200/126 at my doctors apt she suggested i get checked out in the ER.I figured this would have been taken seriously & I would be in and out or at least not kept around the waiting room getting more anxious. After 4 hours of waiting I walked out. I had an EKG done, but it was never uploaded to my patient gateway account. I took a picture of the abnormal results. Still wondering what anterior infract means; it would be nice if they at least explained it on my account. The women who did my ekg was wicked nice. & the intake girl who did my vitals was super kind. But the rest of you need a different job because u truly suck at what you do. Also, they should split their waiting room into 2 parts. keep the sick people who cough all over the place separated.

Another bad review from me about Salem hospital. I am in the acute psych unit and there hasn't been one nice women nurse or mental health counselor. They are really rude, insensitive and say really weird things. One shamed a mentally ill women for being naked in her room and laughed with other patients about it. Talk about unethical!! That is unexpected nurse behavior.....she's young mid 30s probably, saugus accent, and has fake lashes. I've already had to speak to the nurse manager about another older women with white blonde hair, bigger and glasses. She completely ignored my requests for Tylenol for my headache for hours and didn't give me my anti depressant that I've been on for 2 years for hours after she was supposed to give it to me. She ignored me at the window, didn't even LOOK at me and then snapped at me when I repeated myself. Wild.

Hospital was okay. Went into the main entrance, where they make you mask-up and ask you where your going. There is security guard at the entrance also. Every time I have been here, the parking situation is terrible, you have to park so far away. Unless you are handicapped, but even then the spots are usually filled up very quickly. There are vending machines near emergency room which is nice. The wait is usually a good wait. Wouldn’t go back unless had to.

My husband went to the ER a couple months back and got prescribed heart medication for an irregular heartbeat and after it ran out they never prescribed more. They didn’t mention speaking with his PCP and has now been waiting for an appt after not hearing back. I’ve always given positive feedback for them but I’ve also never had heart medication prescribed.

My mother was brought in on Saturday because of a bad fall. Everybody has wonderful. Very nice. Very attentive. She is on the Phippen floor. Her daytime nurse Dylan is a traveling nurse out of NY. He has been absolutely fantastic. He helps her out before her tests and has just been very helpful. They all have but she really has a soft spot for Dylan. Definitely recommend.

this is the worst run emergency department I've ever had the displeasure of visiting... 14 hours and still waiting to be seen... they are totally disorganized and understaffed and do an incredibly poor job of keeping patients apprised of their place for being seen

I have no idea what kind of people get bad treatment here, but I just delivered my second child here and had another wonderful experience. I was here for 5 days and found the staff to be friendly, accommodating and practically falling all over themselves to help me and my baby. After a long induction, I pushed for 2 hours to get my son out and had to be scheduled in for an immediate c-section when he got stuck. One of the nurses stayed with me the whole time and even stayed late so she could be there with me. The aftercare nurses helped us so much with my newborn and my post surgical care. Even the janitorial staff was sweet and friendly! These people in my opinion are saints, I could honestly not have asked for a better experience. I will say to skip the hospital food, kitchen staff was lovely but the food was not so much lol. We ordered takeout instead, no big deal. :)

You couldn't ask for a more caring team of nurses! Love. Love. Love!

The birth of our second child at the Birthplace was a wonderful experience. The natal unit nurses and doctors were wonderful -cheerful, supportive, and attentive. It was post-birth when the attention, support, and cheer virtually disappeared. Despite repeatedly asking for a lactation consultant in the 48 hours post-birth, we never saw one. Messages left with the lactation consultants after leaving the Birthplace were never returned. Our pediatrician eventually recommended we seek someone out at the Beverly Hospital, where they immediately scheduled an appointment for the next day. There were many other dropped passes while we were there, but not responding to a mother who needs help breast feeding is pretty big. One other thing, and this is a little nitpicky. My wife was craving something cold the night after the birth, so I went out and bought some popsicles and Klondike Bars and put them in the fridge that had numerous signs saying "This Fridge is for PATIENT FOOD ONLY." Even though I took the extra precaution of labeling both boxes, *everything* was missing within 6 hours. Now I get that working in a hospital is no walk in the park and I am not going to lose sleep over some stolen popsicles... but really? I brought in a big basket of pastries for the entire staff. I would have been happy to have gotten you some ice cream instead if that's what you were craving.

I had my first baby here this past March and had a great experience. When I was pregnant I came across a few not-so-stellar internet reviews on this place and it freaked me out. So, to spare future moms-to-be the worry, I told myself afterwards that I'd have to write a review of my *very* positive experience (and for what it's worth I talked to half a dozen other moms in-person who delivered at the Birthplace and had the same great experience I did). From the moment we came through the doors (at 6am after my water broke in the parking lot!) until we left with our new little guy in hand, the entire staff here was so accommodating. I especially can't say enough great things about the nurses- my husband and I were impressed by every one we encountered. They took the fear-factor out of labor and delivery and once our baby arrived they hand-held us through the first few nerve-wracking days and nights with a newborn. By the end of our stay I was afraid we'd worn out the 'call' button, but the nurses here really seem to care about the moms and babies (and the partners too!) and no questions or concerns went unanswered. The facilities were nice and clean and everyone gets their own room, which was a non-negotiable for me. I'd definitely recommend taking a tour beforehand to see for yourself- they gave us a tour as part of our Isis childbirth class (also at Salem Hospital) and it really put us at ease. In short, I'd recommend the Birthplace to anyone and I plan on being a repeat customer for any future children.

It's very busy at this hospital. I was told when we did the tour there was a Jacuzzi tub in all but one rooms that is not true. I got the one room that didn't have it and the worse room on the floor. I wanted an all natural birth so wanted to be able to walk around which I wasn't allowed to because of pitocin. The rooms are clean and the many ladies I have during my labor were sweet especially Suzanne who helped me through it all. The food wasn't awful but I wish I knew u could order whatever u wanted instead of just getting what they wanted to give you. The post labor experience wasn't my favorite like Diane was amazing but that was it. They didn't seem to really want to help me and just weren't my favorite. Overall it's a nice place but I wish things were told correctly to me

I had an awful experience here. I went in to be induced at 41 weeks. I was in labor for two days. During the second night, the baby's heart rate slowed dangerously due to the stress of the pitocin. At one point it stopped all together. It was terrifying. We called for help, which came late and infrequently. We did not trust that the staff was monitoring us, so my husband sat up and watched the monitor himself all night long and went to the nurse's station to bring somebody to the room each time we were alarmed. The next morning, I had a c section. It was entirely unnecessary and could have been easily avoided had the doctor simply not broken my water. I know this because the two surgeons discussed it with each other in the middle of my surgery. There were a few nurses that were very good, but on the whole, the post-surgical care was awful. 24 hours after my surgery, one literally pulled me by the arm out of bed toward the bathroom. I started to cry that I was in pain. She told me that I was not in pain: I was only scared. It turned out that my skin had reacted to the glue they used on my bandage and a 2"x3" chunk of it was literally being pulled from my body each time I moved. They brought my pain medication to me late - sometimes by as much as two hours - EIGHT TIMES during my stay, including three times on the day of my surgery. I had to keep track of when I was due and send my mother to the nurse's station to remind them 15 minutes prior each time. That didn't even get them on time despite the fact that a doctor came in to lecture me about how important it was that I received pain management timely. On the third day, when I requested medication that was an hour and a half late, a nurse *yelled* at me about how she had other things to do. The close of the incision was done incorrectly. My muscles are lined up incorrectly and the skin is puckered more than half an inch. Over a year later I still have pain. I will need plastic surgery to correct it. On the whole, they ignored my concerns. I am not sure the nurses even knew that I had been in labor because they refused to give me ice and other standard treatment that would have helped ease the cervical pain associated with a balloon catheter and two days of pre-delivery manipulation. I thank god that I did not have any life threatening complications like the woman above because none of my complaints were taken seriously or addressed.

Please please please if you have a loved one hurt after a fall . Do not bring them here they will re direct you to Brigham and Woman's hospital. He had a TBI from a file after the CAT scan the nurse has the Addessi need to say what do you want to do. I'm like save my father's life then they go there's no Neurosurgeon on staff. This place used to be great 30 years ago it's all about quantity not quality anymore it's a rip and run do not go there please please please I would give this place negative stars if I could

Do to the simple fact that I am a single mother the closest hospital to a friends house where I could leave my 8month old baby was Salem Hospital Emergency room (I live in Everett).I arrived at 6:30. I waited till 8:30 to inquire about the remaining duration of my wait. Around 7:45 a man walked in and had been rambling out loud of his tours in the military. He continued to ramble and as he did the two people sitting at the front desk at the time ( tall African American male dressed in all brown and a tall more well rounded causation woman in a blue/grey top) just sat there and laughed and whispered. They weren't making it a secret who they were discussing. Making ill-mannered comment about how he's been there all day and how "crazy" he is. Excluding the facial expressions they were making as he screamed his back hurt they were making odious comments. As if that weren't enough, I'm finally called back to sit on a stretcher in the hall in the back only to hear Hanna and Jessica discussing another patient right in front of everyone in the hall making comments like " he was just here rolling around in a wheelchair and didn't want my help.who brought him here, oh hi Uber driver welcome to my shit show (all while having a smug look on her face) As if she's getting paid by the patient and didn't have the time. I was extremely disappointed to the way she handled the situation. There are things you shouldn't say out loud at work even if it does bother you. Waited another hour at this point I've just been sitting from 6:30 to 10:00 before being seen or spoken to by a nurse. The only thing that helped my visit was my assigned nurse practitioner! Very sweet/real upfront with what was going on. She was in and out in less than an hour. I was very pleased with and appreciated her service.

My wife and I had a planned natural birth, and then an induction, and then she had a complication and needed an emergency c-section part way through induction. The nurses and doctors were top notch here and we both felt very well taken care of. The emergency c-section needed to be quick because of potential blood loss to mom and child and the doctor was clear, decisive, and led us through the process. The lactation consultants each have their own tricks but we left feeling like we had a good overall toolbox to take home and work with. They were very patient overall and understanding of unique conditions. The nurses I can't hep enough praise on--they were truly outstanding and very helpful at all stages. The facilities are great. I highly recommend taking the tour before you decide to get a better feel for the place but the rooms are nice, clean and very comfortable. Tips? Get your birth plan together but make it flexible. Empty out the bassinet they provide for your home nursery--there are some goodies in there! Send your baby to the nursery at night so you can get some rest. We are all breastfeeding now but needed the bottle the first few nights so that mom could rest after the major surgery. If you do leave early avail yourself of the visiting home nurse. It was a huge comfort for us to have a nurse visit us after our stay and see us breastfeed at home and kind of give the sign off on how things were going. Listen to the lactation consultants! They help you avoid your nipples falling off. Dads should bring a good pillow! I was hesitant after seeing some of the reviews here but personal reviews said it was great and I was glad that turned out to be the case. We would definitely deliver here again. Thanks Birthplace for making the beginning of our child's life so memorable and taking such good care of us!

I had my baby here and it is so gross. The nurses are mostly young, ignorant brats that pay no attention to anything you need nevermind your comfort. Go To Beverly! I Had my 2nd baby in Beverly and it was like a 5 star hotel.

Had I reviewed the Birthplace ten years ago, I would have had nothing but positive things to say. They helped me to bring my daughter into the world, and both of us came out safe and healthy, despite a few complications along the way. However, I gave birth to my third child there in March 2010, and they literally almost killed me. It was a VBAC, which was repeatedly encouraged for me due to other health conditions. That part was successful, and I don't believe it is the reason for the subsequent problems. And, to be filed under Good News, my son was healthy from the start. For me... not so much. About 12 hours after the birth, I began experiencing very intense, sharp pain in one particular spot in my lower-right abdomen. I told every nurse I saw that something was wrong, and that I needed to see a doctor ASAP. I spent two days being brushed off: "Oh, that's just gas pains. It's normal to be a little uncomfortable after you give birth. Drink some hot tea mixed with ginger ale, you'll be fine." It took 36 hours to get a doctor into my room, and then she performed a very cursory exam and agreed with the nurses. Three days after giving birth, I was discharged, despite continuing complaints of serious and increasing abdominal pain. I went directly from the Birthplace to the ER, and within 24 hours I had been Medflighted to MGH. I was in a coma for the next 10 days. It turns out that my "gas pains" were actually a case of my uterus rupturing due to a very serious infection, affecting both my abdominal organs and my blood. This was something incurred in the delivery room, and if I had been taken seriously from the start it could have been diagnosed with a simple lab test and treated with a short course of antibiotics. Doctors at MGH told my husband they had never seen anyone be as sick as I was and survive, and they were certain that if I had waited even a few more hours I would not have pulled through. I understand that illness and germs happen, and that some complications are inevitable. My complaint about the Birthplace is not the fact that I was infected in the first place, because life is all about risks... my complaint is that I had to *beg* to see a doctor, and even then I was not taken seriously. I am absolutely certain that, if this was my first baby and I had believed them about "normal discomfort" or if I was less attuned to my own symptoms, I would not be alive today. I have received health care services from a number of other departments at the North Shore Medical Center, with varying levels of skill - but the Birthplace is the only place where I felt overtly disrespected and ignored.

I was not happy at all with my experience at the Birthplace. I heard from others about the nurse's and staff but I went with Salem Hospital anyways. It was the only hospital my doctor was affiliated with. I loved my doctor and didn't want to lose out on having him deliver my baby. I had my first child in Virgina. I had a wonderful experience. I figured the Birthplace couldn't be as bad as everyone made it out be. Some people are just to sensitive. I'm a tough girl, I could handle it. I have to say I regret those words because I was so dissatisfied. Although I understand this is an everyday thing for the staff they should have kept in mind that having a baby is not an everyday thing for most women. The staff just seemed so blah. That's the only word I can come up with to describe my experience. Everything seemed as if it was like "Yeah whatever" I did come in contact with a couple good nurses but for the most part pretty much every other nurse seemed uninterested and uncaring. I don't know what it is with the employees in the birth center. I had to bring my son to the pediatric ER at Salem hospital in the past for a fall off his bike and the staff was out of this world and so friendly. They were so good to my son. I just don't understand how the same exact hospital has such unhappy people working just up the hall. I'd also like to add that I was told right away that it was frowned upon by the staff to have your newborn in the hospital nursery. I had my baby at 3:35 in the morning. I was almost afraid to ask if they could take her into the nursery. I mustered up the courage to ask and they did take her but I felt like I was committing a crime for God's sake. Not happy with my experience. I just hope in the future the nurse's take a little more pride in their jobs and treat patient's with a little bit more respect. I was nothing but respectful and polite but I was not treated the same.

10:30 PM with an asthma attack. I walked in and didn't even have to go to into the waiting room. They took great care of me an I came out feeling amazing! All the nurses and doctors were so nice! 5 Stars

I gave birth at the birthplace in July 20, 2012. I had a fantastic experience. Each nurse I had was attentive, loving, and kind. I felt like they all cared about my well being and the well being of my baby. Doctors were thorough and explained everything to me and my husband so we were able to understand everything going on. My room was kept well stocked, very clean, and anytime we needed anything, we were given it. Exceptional place to give birth!
