Howard Street Brewing is building a Rogers Park taproom for beer | Eater Chicago

"A brick-and-mortar pizzeria located about 150 feet from the proposed taproom site; its proximity matters because Chicago’s food-truck ordinance bars trucks from parking within 200 feet of restaurants, which could limit food-truck options for nearby businesses, though customers would still be allowed to bring pizza inside the taproom." - Ashok Selvam

My mom’s family is from Berwyn Illinois and I and easily say the quality of food has not changed one bit coming here to AZ! The pizza is nothing short of amazing with some of the highest quality ingredients you’ll ever see. The homemade minestrone soup was a real home run as well and wound up taking a to go order home. Cannot recommend any higher!

Google
Pizza is always best piping hot, and even with take-out, the pie from Salerno’s was still steaming when I got home. Coming from a town known for great pizza, finding a comparable spot is tough — but Salerno’s comes close, and I’ll definitely be back. The only tweak I’d make is the sauce, which leans a bit tart for my taste. Tip: order it well done. Saluti

This place feels like a local favorite where the staff knows almost everyone, and even as first-timers we felt super welcome. Ordering at the counter and paying upfront made it easy, and the food was tasty especially the garlic bread, lasagna, and that giant brownie. Overall, it was a great experience and I’d definitely go back to try the pizza next time.

Growing up in Berwyn,Illinois the original Salernos at 16th north Berwyn and And our family go to restaurant all the time, To me moving out here, three months ago and struggling with looking for “Chicago food” to find out there’s a Salernos location out here. I had to go find out because I cannot find a Chicago pizza the way It is back home. When I went and I got this pizza and I bit into that first slice, I text people back in Chicago. I said this What I call home now I’m complete with the food and this move!!!! Ross. The owner was so pleasantly nice that he actually came out to say hi to me, Trish the waitress Phenomenal the friendliest, atmosphere definitely family style vibes to sit down it it our home is your home just you feel relax not rushed, but super great service you can get in eat and out if that’s what you need, I took my pizza to go. I ordered a small deluxe pizza and I ordered a extra large deluxe definitely a Chicago style Sausage, onion, green pepper mushroom I brought this pizza home to my mom That’s all she talked about was Salerno’s. I’m so glad that they’re so close to me because I definitely will be going back and getting lots of frozen pizzas and be bringing all my new friends to this restaurant to show them what Chicago Pizza is really like Rosati‘s and Lou Malnati‘s is decent but nothing makes it like a family owned Chicago Pizza. Price is definitely decent also because it’s fresh that’s what I love to pay for the freshness

If you're looking for awesome, real deal Chicago "tavern-style" pizza, this is your spot!! The chicken parm and pasta rock, too!!

Chris J.

Google
The thin crust pizza is awesome. Their sausage is quality not those crumbles you hope are pork. Their chicken parm dinner and sandwiches are delicious, you know what it is all good. give them a try.

Google
Can I give you 10 Stars? Arguably the best pizza I have had in my life. The atmosphere is casual dining, the staff is super friendly and welcoming. The food! OMG, where do I start. You want salad? They offer a choice of Romaine, Iceberg or Spring Mix! Who offers three different types? The ranch dressing is perfection. Salad arrives with a basket of sliced Italian bread and real butter. The Zona Wings are a perfect blend of sweet and tangy… the wings have more meat than I have ever seen. Now, we ordered the Italian Sausage Pizza. Out of this world! It comes out piping hot… as in molten lava hot! Most excellent all the way around. Bravo Salerno family! I’m a huge fan. Don’t forget to grab the Brownie and Ice Cream for dessert… so good! 😍😍😍

Google
Got a deep dish with 4 toppings, no drinks, $43.32 with tax. Pretty large pie, two slices was plenty, leaving 4 for leftovers. The crust was very hard to cut but tasted good. A lot of cheese and the sauce was good. The overall flavor was good but seemed quite light on toppings. That was disappointing.

Yelp
When you go in a restaurant and the staff knows 90% of the tables. You know you are at the right place, Trish knows her FAMILY of customers. As it was our first time eating there, it was a welcomed change! Everyone was amazing. When you go in you step up to the counter and order from the menu and they will bring the food to your table. Oddly, I liked the pay before you eat, casual eating experience. My daughter ordered the fettuccine Alfredo, garlic bread, brownie with cup ice cream. I ordered the lasagna. Garlic bread was very good! Soft bread dipped in a melted garlic butter..dripping good! Lasagna, I was told by Trish, were made in house. $19.99 will feed 2 people. Lasagna was 5 layers with Italian sausage, mozzarella cheese, ricotta cheese (?), house made spaghetti sauce. With a crispy cheese goodness on the outside edge! Sauce was delicious, , not overly seasoned and not salty. Only down side I personally had with the dish is that I thought the layers should have been fuller,or more of it. Layers were thin and 1 bottom layor of Italian sausage. The lasagna noodles were amazing but I just wanted a thicker hardier bite. The chocolate chip brownie is house made! Huge! Enough for 2 people.. down side... the cup vanilla ice cream if you get that... Just get the brownie! Overall great experience, we will return. I was eyeing the old school rotating pizza oven.. next time

Yelp
A family run business worth supporting . The wait staff was super friendly and service was very attentive . Lots of tables for seating so it wasn't a long wait. Could see lots of take out orders leaving which is always a good sign too Over all the food was tasty , being from back east there were some more unusual choices than your typical local Italian. A large portion of their food is home made like their desserts and appetizers , and ravioli , lasagna. Their pizza is deep dish Chicago and thin crust The deep dish looked tasty but we got the pizza . It was made more with what seemed like a cracker crust ( not home made?) reminded me of boxed pizza . The toppings where sold per item so be careful it adds up quick My favorite is they have homemade Neapolitan ice cream sundaes and tiramisu. We too a slice home for later. We wanted to try it , but at 10,00 it was a bit pricey for it . But lots of things are going that direction

Yelp
We recently catered from Selenro's Restaurant & Pizzeria for a large party and were beyond impressed! We ordered cheese ravioli, mostaccioli, fettuccine Alfredo, vegetarian mostaccioli, and garlic bread--and everything was absolutely delicious. The flavors were rich, the pasta perfectly cooked, and the portions were generous. It ended up being the perfect amount of food plus extra leftovers. The only (very minor) hiccup was the garlic bread--we thought it would be traditional garlic bread, but it came as sliced bread with Parmesan cheese on the side. We ended up buttering, seasoning, and toasted. Overall, this was a fantastic experience and we'll definitely be ordering again. Can't wait to try more from their menu! The staff was so helpful they even assisted in putting in my SUV.

Yelp
This place is a small family business that loves to serve typical Italian meals! The atmosphere is spacious with plenty of room for seating large groups. The food is filling and served in large portions which makes it worth the price.

Yelp
Very simple concept. Order at the counter, but pretty much just serve yourself after that. Staff is constantly checking on you though. The owner (I assume) even checked on us numerous times to make sure we were enjoying our dishes. Ordered garlic cheese bread, an all meat pizza, chicken alfredo, and chicken franchaise. Garlic cheese bread was amazing and honestly, I can't remember the last time I had pizza this good! Soooo much flavor... and the crust? Omg the crust was something I've never tasted before. Chef's kiss . The chicken franchaise (spelling?) was also phenomenal. It was so tender that even the next day it was delicious. They don't do much to garnish or make their dishes look fancy, but don't be misled. Their modesty is all an act because those dishes are an explosion of flavors. I can't believe I've never tried this place before. We'll definitely be back. Make sure to go hungry too, because they're not stingy on portions size.

Yelp
Great Italian spot. Good food, great service, the staff is super friendly, plenty of seating and parking. They have a good selection of items on their menu. Their red sauce is outstanding, and you can get it to go, and they sell pizza dough, snd it makes a great pie. Delicious desserts, good down home feel to all the food they prepare. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Pizza was good and with a good cheese pull! My hubby liked the crisp bottom. He wanted more sauce and they brought him out a big bowl full. The baked mostaccioli was flavorful and the chicken fettuccine Alfredo was very creamy and delicious. The workers were very friendly and really told us about the place since it was our first time here. I thought it was cute how they brought the food out on a cart. She said they have lunch specials ,even on Saturday .

Yelp
I've been coming to Salernos for over 20 years. I can't believe I never wrote a review?!? Anyway they have amazing food and the staff always AWESOME!!

Samuel L.

Yelp
We love this pizza it's definitely an old Berwyn classic! Brings us back to past celebrations where their pizza was always an attention getter. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Great Italian food. Authentic. Owners are kind, prices are fair, and they remember their customers. It is my favorite restaurant in Gilbert. You can also buy their homemade sauce. I recommend everything, the chicken francese, carbonara which is authentic (one of my favorite Italian dishes) and the Italian beef and rolled cheese sticks.

Yelp
This was my first time into Salerno's even though I have heard many recommendations over the years. The restaurant has a very casual feel to it. You walk up to order your food/drink and are given a number for your table. Once your order is ready, it is delivered to your table. All of the staff was friendly and helpful. The food was wonderful! The entrees are served with a dinner salad - your choice of romaine, iceberg or spring mix. The Italian dressing was perfect to dress the salad served with shredded carrots and croutons. We ordered a caprese salad to start which was fresh and perfectly seasoned. I ordered eggplant Parmesan as my entree and cheese ravioli for my cousin. You can tell the marinara is house made and is one of the best I've had in a restaurant setting (I typically don't like marinara). Every part of our meal was delivered quickly and at the proper temperatures. My eggplant Parmesan was still crisp even having marinara placed on top of it, I was impressed by the fry. I would certainly recommend this restaurant and would love to come back myself.

Yelp
We hadn't been here in a long time. A really long time. Enjoyed the ambience and food previously. Staff was always pleasant. They still are. Now you order at counter and they bring food to you It was my birthday and my husband picked this place out for us to go as son and DIL and eldest grandson wanted to treat us. They love Italian food like I do The pizza was underwhelming - big change. My entree and others were under seasoned. It was not bland in the past. I had carbonara and it literally tasted like oil and pasta. We had salad, chicken parm sandwiches etc too. Main consensus was no flavor profile but nice staff. They close at 8 and literally we started feeling like they wanted to get out sooner. They weren't rude but the message was clear. Great people - that's it for us.

Daniela L.

Yelp
This past weekend, my mom catered my baby shower from Salernos and WOW! Angela, the catering manager, was so helpful with the ordering process. The food and delivery service was fantastic. We received so many compliments on how delicious everything was. We will definitely be using Salernos again for our next big gathering!

Leslie H.

Yelp
Our food this visit was average, way o we-priced for average food! The atmosphere is reminiscent of a cafeteria, rather than a high-priced Italian restaurant! You have to go to the register to order and pay, then they deliver your food up you. Again, not what one would expect for an "upscale" Italian restaurant! At least it was better than the mess they served four years ago at my daughter's high school graduation dinner! That was horrible! The only reason we went on Sunday is our friends who wanted to go there. I tried warning them, but decided our friendship was more important than the food! The service was adequate.

Maryanne P.

Yelp
Amazing fettuccini Alfredo, and quite possibly the best fudge brownie I've ever had! Great service - this place is a gem!

Kim I.

Yelp
Having moved to Arizona two years ago, this is our favorite 'local' Italian restaurant!! The food never disappoints this Italian girl. The customer service makes me feel right at home and a part of the family!! Highly recommend this 5 star restaurant!!

Mikayla K.

Yelp
The food was great had the baked clams and the ravioli it's a decent price and it's a mom and pop place

Yelp
We ordered from here last Saturday night because I didn't want to go anywhere. Everyone knows take out is never as good as when you eat at the restaurant. One of the reviewers said salad comes with the entree. This is not the case. We ordered 2 chicken parmigiana, with Alfredo sauce on the pasta, the shrimp dinner, a calzone & 2 orders of garlic bread. The portions are large. Everyone liked the food except the Alfredo. my daughter & I both had the Alfred, and it was super bland. My daughter threw hers away. Before taxes & a tip the total was $96.00. Unfortunately this will not be our go to spot because I have to have Alfredo when I have Italian.
google avatar

Yelp
Dinner with friends Friendly family restaurant Staff was attentive and helpful Interior had plenty of spacious seating Delicious food with many options The Lasagna was very tasty and huge portions The Eggplant Parmigiana was flavorful and fresh
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite Italian restaurant in the area. We always order takeout from here and the service is always quick and friendly. I love the pizza, sandwiches and pasta here- my favorite dish is their eggplant parmigiana over angel hair pasta, I could eat it everyday! The pasta sauce here is absolutely delicious! Very authentic taste and this is real family-owned Italian.

Yelp
My 7 year old asked me "Mom can we get Papa John's and breadsticks tonight?" I was a little taken back, as I don't like Papa John's and he was oddly specific. I said how about this place instead, I keep hearing about how great their pizza's are. I ordered an XL regular crust with Sausage and pepperoni with a side of garlic bread. 30 min they said. My dad had picked up for us. So not too sure how the place looked inside or ambiance. But it seemed like they were pretty punctual when it came to Pizza Time. Now onto the food! My first bite and literally all the cheese came off and ended up burning my mouth and hand as I tried to catch it. Lol. Whoops. Not too sure if that's a good or bad thing, but it was a bit annoying. My first initial thought of the crust was odd. Thick, buttery, crispy but cardboard like. There wasn't much flavor to it or texture. I was expecting a little bit of a chew maybe? But I did enjoy a nice butter like flavor to it. The sauce was a little too simple for me as well. Sausage and pepperoni were okay as well but I did enjoy how much cheese was put on. Garlic bread was honestly better than our pizza.. *shrugs* I ended up giving the pizza to my siblings and parents, they also didn't care for it and told me I wasted money on it. My 7 year old said, it was okay, "should have just gone to papa John's mom!" Welp I wanted to give it a try and I did, it wasn't our cup of tea, but obviously it is others.

Yelp
A note of thanks to those who recommended trying Salerno's in Gilbert, AZ. Although I enjoy a deep dish, I've been missing a thin crust cheese, sausage, mushroom pizza. Please don't suggest rosatis or vero. Please, please don't. Salerno delivered a solid thin crust pizza. I will be back.

Jamie A.

Yelp
I can't even believe we have lived down the street from this place for over 6 years and we had it for the first time tonight. (we dont get out much ) ;) but wow!! 10/10! I told my husband I'm craving cheese pizza and spaghetti and meatballs and he picked this all up for my 41st bday and it was amazing!! best pizza, most delicious and huge meat balls (not dry like most places). so good and we have tons of left overs and I can't wait to dive in again tmrw !

Yelp
Great family owned business. Awesome pizza and pasta dishes. Food is made with love and it shows.

Tammy B.

Yelp
Salerno's has the best pizza. The sauce is amazing. Always craving it. Hubby has tried a few sandwiches and likes them all.

Ken B.

Yelp
No one in the Valley does Chicago style pizza and food better than Salerno's! The quality (and quantity) of their ingredients takes you right back to Friday night pizza growing up in Chicago. Everything is exceptional - from the Italian beef and entrees to the creamy garlic salad dressing and baked clams. Ross and his crew put so much love and care into their dishes. Oh - and the service is outstanding too! If you haven't been there - you're missing out on some of Arizona's best, authentic pizza and food!
google avatar

Noel L.

Yelp
The food and service were exceptional. We're excited to move to Gilbert from Southern California and make this our go-to place for pizza and sandwiches. The owner and workers were incredibly welcoming and friendly.

Michele B.

Yelp
We are always looking for good pizza especially family owned! The pizza was ok. I ordered a salad and it was a head of iceberg lettuce with lunch meat! I hoped for them for sure!
google avatar

Yelp
To all my ChiTown transplants out here in Arizona. You gotta try Salerno's in Gilbert. Ordered a 16" sausage and mushroom. Spoke with the owner who worked at his father's original Salerno's in Berwyn. He makes his own sausage ( Father's recipe with fennel) on site. Best Chicago pizza in the valley!

Randy B.

Yelp
Easily the Best Pizza in Phoenix Salerno's is that spot. If you love pizza, like real pizza, this place will blow you away. The crust is always perfect--crispy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. The sauce actually has flavor (not that bland stuff you get everywhere else), and the cheese is melty, insanely gooey perfection. You can tell everything is made with care, and the ingredients are super fresh. I've tried a bunch of their pies and haven't been let down once. Even their simple pepperoni hits way harder than most "gourmet" places in town. Staff is super friendly, the vibe is relaxed, and it just feels like a neighborhood gem. I've had pizza all over Phoenix, and nothing else comes close. Salerno's is the real deal. I liked it so much, I decided to have my birthday party here.
google avatar

Yelp
We love this place! We've ordered takeout several times, and it's always been fantastic. Tonight was our first time dining in, and it was an excellent experience. The family and staff are so friendly and provide great service. The food is incredible--we had pizza and cannolis. Definitely try this place; you won't be disappointed!

Jason B.

Yelp
Amazing authentic Italian food . We have been coming here for years , and have tried a lot of items on the menu and have enjoyed every single one of them. They also have the best Tiramisu I've ever had .
google avatar

Janna H.

Yelp
Salernos has the most delicious, authentic red sauce and pastas. We love their pizza soo much! Tons of yummy cheese and sauce, and the crust is always perfect. Totally recommend for a delicious Italian meal!
google avatar

Teresa B.

Yelp
I've only ordered from this restaurant twice. Both orders were good. My favorite of the dishes was the baked mostaccioli was really good. And a huge portion. Enough for a few meals for me. The caprese salad was really good as well and a nice portion size. I'd like to actually visit the restaurant to see how that experience is.
google avatar

D M.

Yelp
Delicious food. My daughter had Gluten free pizza which she Loved. My sandwich was enough to feed 3 people. The bread was good. The restaurant was very clean. Service was fantastic! I would come back again.

Ryan B.

Yelp
I've been eating pizza here for 15 years. Can't get better than original crust and Italian sausage! Keep up the amazing pizza! It's been consistent and hasn't changed.
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
I was just in there with my brother in law and we had lunch. Wanted to do a quick shout out to how friendly everyone is here and how good the food was. Five stars! -B.C

Kevin D.

Yelp
I don't like to get long winded. This is by far the best Chicago pizza I have ever had in this area. Also had an Italian beef that can't be beat. Price is fair and the service phenomenal. Can't say enough good about this place. Try it , you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Coyote B.

Yelp
You know how grandparents always want to show you pictures of their grandkids on their phones? Well, I don't have any, so I do the next best thing and show people pictures of my favorite Italian Beef in Arizona. Enjoy!
google avatar

Lorry S.

Yelp
The food is really good. I'm originally from NY and this place tastes good. Any dish is worth a try. Service is great, and I always order ahead and pick up. So, I don't know much about the inside. Nice people.
google avatar

Tony T.

Yelp
Well, I finally tried it, and I won't be back. It gives me no joy to write this review, but I have to be honest and save people time and money. The food was average at best and i understand this is all subjective, but the kicker for me was the pizza crust and how terrible it was. Reminded me of the crust used on a typical frozen pizza from the super market. Not good. The service was good. The ambiance was not bad at all. But for the price, I'll have to avoid this spot. Very much wanted and hoped it would be good. My 3-stars are for the service. If they do something better (and I mean a lot better) with the crust on the thin pizza I'll try it again.

Claudine G.

Yelp
First, the prices, based on the quality and quantity of food, are astronomical. Second, the food is subpar at best. The garlic bread was just bread, butter and italian seasoning, but no garlic. Plus the sauce leaked all over the bag. The Caesar salad was $15 and was just lettuce, croutons (stale) and grated cheese (similar to Kraft). Finally, the pizza was just gross. Beyond disappointing! Never again.
google avatar

Kira D.

Yelp
Although Salerno's is not my favorite pizza joint in the valley, I can appreciate their high quality ingredients! Their pizza is good. I got a simple sausage, mushrooms, and extra red sauce on a thin crust pizza. Their red sauce could use a little extra zesty flavor, and their crust could be more crispy, but overall, a good, solid pizza! They're only doing carry out at the moment, and we had to call to order (we couldn't find a way to order online). They had our 2 pizzas ready in 30 minutes, and pick up was a breeze! I'll get Salerno's again, but will ask for extra crispy crust!

Lou H.

Yelp
Amazing pizza every time we come to the east side we stop in .. we r from Chicago and this reminds us of back home.. oh yeah mozz sticks and bruschetta absolutely amazing
google avatar

Ryan I.

Yelp
We love the meatball and mushroom pizza. Our picky toddlers love the sweet marina sauce on the pizza! We come often!
google avatar

brisa j.

Yelp
We love this family owned Italian restaurant! Is it my family's absolute go to when we are craving pizza or pasta or wings or mozz sticks...and more. Everything we have tried here is absolutely delicious, you will not regret your choice if you choose to dine here. I highly recommend the chicken parmigiana as well. Staff is always great and have come to know us now that we go so often!

Ella H.

Yelp
Salerno's pizzeria is the BEST pizza place ever! If you are looking for a family friendly pizza place come here. They have really good pizza, chicken parm sandwiches, and salads. The service is spectacular! The music is really calm too. so, bring your family, friend ANYONE you know and bring them here. Its place is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!

Curtis S.

Yelp
Possibly the best pizza and service in the east valley. It's not for everyone but those of us from back east that like Chicago think crust absolutely love it.
