"The Market Line, the subterranean food hall below the Essex Street Market, has gained a new vendor. Salon Sucré is a French patisserie from pastry chef Simon Herfray. The dessert spot will have seasonally-changing options, but currently on the menu are macarons, bonbons, croissants, a pumpkin tart, and apple cheesecake." - Emma Orlow

I went to Salon Sucre recently for the first time and was a bit disappointed by the desserts (especially for their price - $9 each for a dessert smaller than the size of a fist). The desserts were beautiful but they were lacking in taste. We got the matcha lemon roll and the passion fruit and banana cake. The best part of the matcha lemon roll was the chocolate that was on top of it. The cake itself was on the dry end and was not very flavorful. The passion fruit and banana cake was ok. I liked it better than the matcha lemon roll but I was still underwhelmed.

It’s at lower level of Essex market right next to the stairs if you enter from Delancey side . They also have wines. Tried the fruit tart which is very good and not too sweet. Love the chocolate one which has complexity of texture and it is Michelin level. Will try their croissants and lemon bars next time.

Just visited to newly opened Essex Market Line - which by the way is magnificent with its huge ceilings and post industrial flair - and discovered Salon Sucré, a beautifully designed pastry shop / dessert bar. Chef Simon Herfray himself was there, and being French he knows his pastries. Check out the delicious matcha mandarin mousse, and the pumpkin tart. Chef Simon also offers baking classes in the East Village, which I will sign up for!

Google
Don’t waste your money here. The matcha croissant here was one of the worst bread I had in my entire life. When I bit into the bread, I see super bright Christmas tree green color which indicates food coloring. As I kept eating more bites I hoped to taste matcha but all I tasted was bread. And when I got to my last bites at the end, there was a little bit of matcha cream. BUT the matcha cream tasted like sour lemon?! I am sorry to myself that I spent $5.72 on a croissant with green food coloring inside. Please don’t make the same mistake as I did.

The desserts here are absolutely incredible and the staff were very nice and helpful. Make it your business to stop by and enjoy a dessert after having something savory. Try the banana, papaya and passion fruit dessert and the NY Apple.

Google
Chef Simon is amazing, my husband recently turned 50 and he made this beautiful and delicious cake made of madeleine crust, a vanilla beans infused custard, a red berries paste and a lacquer red glaze on top! Our guests were impressed to say the least!!

Google
Absolutely spectacular. The service was outstanding. The cappuccino and coffee were amazing. The croissants and lemon tart are the best in the city. Going back is a guarantee!

Highly recommend taking classes with Chef Natalie! We took the pasta class and not only had the best time but learned a real skill.

Yelp
Little booth in the bottom floor of Essex market. It was cute and they have a few tables. Nice selection of desserts and everything we tried was really good, our favorite was the Rocher. The girl at the counter was very nice and informative about the different desserts. They also offer a good selection of wine and other drinks, definitely a good place to stop by.

Yelp
Stopped by after dinner nearby and it was such a perfect way to end the night. Four of us shared four desserts and we definitely made the correct choices. We had a mix of tart and chocolatey sweet. The desserts were amazing and we can't wait to return. The lemon tart ended up being my favorite, which I did not expect. I thought the Rocher was a bit too intense for me by the others loved that the best

Yelp
Came here in the evening after dinner to satisfy our sweet tooth craving. The display case was nearly empty at the time so we had limited options. I got the Hazelnut Cream Puff. My favorite part about it was the crisp at the bottom that give it that ferrero rocher texture to it. The choux wasn't as fresh anymore; the cream had a good thickness to it. I personally LOVE hazelnut and would've loved it if it had more of that flavor. It is definitely more of a dessert bar than a cafe. Since it is inside the Essex market, it's transient with a lot of traffic. I wouldn't recommend this bar if you're looking for more of a cozy spot to lounge around and chit-chat. We ordered at the counter and the cashier put the pastries on a plate and tray. We sat ourselves at a table. For some reason, they gave me disposable utensils to use while my friend got silverware. The cashier was nice, but it was weird that it happened (I assume unintentionally).

Yelp
Salon Sucré is located on the lower level of Essex Market. The lone employee on her laptop didn't acknowledge our presence for some time which made us momentarily consider if we should grab dessert elsewhere. She was nice enough when she finally assisted us but our first impression had already been tainted. We ordered: -- New York Apple: has a glossy red exterior but doesn't contain any apple flavors. The inside is chocolate mousse with (cherry?) jam in the middle. -- Rocher: I was amused by the idea of a super-sized Ferrero Roche. Enclosed in the chocolate shell is pastry cream & caramel with a bit of rice crisp texture coming from somewhere. -- Lemon Tart: more tart than sweet which is what you want from a citrus dessert, but overall quite average. The offerings are prettier than they are tasty. No plans to return, as we should have trusted our gut instinct to hightail it to a different spot the moment we arrived.

Yelp
Amazing experience with Brenda. She taught my whole team how to cook pizza. Had a blast!! Absolutely recommend

Yelp
Cute dessert spot in Essex Market. There's little seats that are in the nicely decorated area of their shop (vs the general food court seating). We tried the "Rocher" which looks like a huge ferrero rocher. The mousse was fluffy and creamy. The inside had a variety of textures, some crunch, a caramel ball, etc. and the bottom has a cookie layer. It was overall very tasty but more sweet than rich in flavor and the shell was pretty difficult to break through which made the dish tactically hard to eat.

Yelp
I'm a big lover of sweets but the desserts here are just too sweet/sugary. Even though some look really nice and would be tasty it was really disappointing and tasted like just sugar, no flavor really. Maybe if the recipes changed I would come again.

Jen L.

Yelp
We got the hazelnut cream puff to share and every part of the dessert was disappointing. The choux part was extremely dry and hard. Honestly, it tasted straight up stale. I usually try to finish my food- especially when it's $9 but I really could not with this one. It was probably one of the worst choux I had. The cream is usually my favorite. I was expecting a light whip. Unfortunately, it was a crazy heavy buttercream that didn't have much actual flavor. There was one hazelnut crunchy chocolate bit at the bottom of the cream that was decent but honestly just tasted like a halved ferrer rocher. Ultimately, for $9 you would expect more out of a dessert. I don't think I'd pay more than $2 for this one.

Yelp
Good dessert in downstairs section of essex market shops. Separated sitting area and all their employees are super nice!

Josephine L.

Yelp
We needed to kill time before our dinner reservation, so we trekked to the nether regions of Essex food market and enjoyed the super cute, super tasty, super chocolate-y Chocolate Apple pastry. How pretty is this thing? And a chocolate bomb in your mouth. Must come back for other creations. Nice lady at the counter too.

Yelp
Lovely place to sit down and pause for a moment while enjoying a delicious sweet treat. Salon Sucré is a great addition to the Market Line below Essex Market. Their display case of colorful, meticulously crafted pastries is enough to catch your eye from across the room. I tried their signature New York Apple cake (made of chocolate mousse surrounding a flavorful cherry center) and the pumpkin walnut tart, and I really enjoyed both! I also love that they have their own seating area. I can't wait to come back, because that almond croissant in the display case was definitely calling my name!

Neha G.

Yelp
Head down to the basement level of Essex Market and head towards the Asian market. Here's where you'll find salon sucre. They have desserts displayed in a small case. Seating is available at the bar (where you can order wine) or at one of the shared spaces with tables. Tried the NY apple dessert. Looks pretty but the taste was meh. Chocolate mousse was okay but the jelly/jam inside I didn't like. The best part is the chocolate biscuit type stand at the bottom. It looks pretty but not my fav. Almost $10 for the treat too! Pricey... they had a pre order matcha dessert for $15. Again pricey for a food court location.

Paola D.

Yelp
I will cross Manhattan again on tomorrow for getting some rochers and lemon tarts (I did not try the other ones). But will stop for a crepe before my way back home for enjoying the ambiance of the salon and the market.

Yelp
Inside the Essex Market is this dessert/wine bar. It's a casual place and the choice of seatings are at the counter or at one of the cafe tables. The tarts can/should be shared. There are wine pairings and coffee but no cold drinks or ice. There is sparkling water though. The tarts are pretty but may not be the freshiest. The cake and mousse fillings were good but the lemon/lime tart we had had a dried out lime twist which should not have been offered because it was not appealing to see the dried slice on top of the tart like that. The curd was a little bitter, pithy in flavor too. I definitely am a citrus tart person but this tart of the four we had was the most lacking and a star deduction. The NY apple tart is actually just in the shape of an apple and there is no apple flavor involved in case that is what you're expecting. The filling is a chocolate mousse filling with a little bit of a berry or cherry jam center which was good but nothing special. An apple cake would have been a better idea inside that glossy apple exterior. The Rocher was a nod to the Ferrero Rocher confection and for those who want chocolate in the guise of a tart, this is should be your choice. My favorite was the passion fruit banana cake tart which had distinct passion fruit mousse and banana cake flavors. The papaya chunks though did not add anything except color. Overall, this a cute dessert place and concept but the quality should be checked and non-alcoholic drink offerings should be expanded. We were given some gratis macarons and truffles which was a nice service gesture.

Yelp
Pretty pastries soothe my soul Love the creativity of the passion fruit banana topped w banana!

George P.

Yelp
For that price, you could ensure the pastries are not stale. How can you claim high-end if they have obviously been sitting in the display for multiples days.

Yelp
Amazing pâtisserie on the lower level of Essex Market. It has its own nook with a cute set up. My friend and I couldn't decide between the chocolate croissant or the almond croissant. To our delight, the awesome lady (I wish I grabbed her name) informed us they carry a chocolate AND almond croissant. I also ordered a pistachio macaron. The texture of the pistachio macaron was absolutely perfect. It had a slight crunch when you bit into the delicate but crispy shell and the filling was soft and chewy. That's often where people go wrong so I was pleased on that point. It tasted good however I do wish I could taste the pistachio flavoring more. The chocolate and almond croissant was the star of the show! Reminiscent of croissants I've had in France. It was so puffy, buttery, full of soft layers, and crumbs exploded with every bite. Just perfect and what a croissant should be. It was amazing. We were told a liquor license would soon be coming and that they would hold wine tastings/pairings. I absolutely look forward to that day and definitely recommend this place. The treats were gone before I remembered that I should have taken a picture!

Yelp
Came across this little shop in the basement of Essex Market. It's super cute and the baked goods are amazing! Will definitely come back for more!

Josie L.

Yelp
I wanted this place to be good. It was a disappointment. Instead of thin, moist, and delicate crêpes, we were served overcooked, dry mess. The chef should have taken more pride in his batter. This is an affront to French cuisine.

Alice F.

Yelp
Truly Outstanding! Everything I have tried here is beautiful and delicious. Made fresh every day, you can't get better quality than this. Don't leave without getting dessert and a coffee here. Chocolate Almond croissant: flaky, fresh and amazing Lemon tart: light and perfectly lemony not too sweet Big Apple: as delicious as it is beautiful, filled with fluffy chocolate mousse and berries Rocher: just like the traditional candy, creamy, nutty and sweet Chef Simon is the real deal - actually French

Yelp

Yelp
Salon Sucre is delicious! The pastries are to die for. My personal fave is the beautiful chocolate apple. Always consistent great service. If you have a sweet tooth and have some time to dedicate to some amazing sweets, Salon Sucre is the spot!

Yelp
My wife and I went there today after we were told how excellent this place was,and let me say we were not disappointed, the pastries made fresh are the best we have ever tasted, the service was impeccable,we cannot wait to go back.

Yelp
We took a pasta making class with Chef Natalie and it was fantastic! It was a fun time, but we actually learned something! We went through everything step by step from pasta dough to amazing sauces! Highly recommend for a great time in New York City!

Yelp
Really high-quality French pastries (croissants, macarons, patisseries and more) in a cute space in Essex Market. All their food is so perfectly pretty, which doesn't always equal tasting good, but these taste amazing. Try the kouign amann - a pastry like a croissant but denser and sweeter. They have their own cute seating area if you want to stay and get a coffee.

Lauren M.

Yelp
Was excited to try this place, and it didn't disappoint! Delicious pastries- especially the passion fruit!

M. P.

Yelp
I can't describe how delicious these desserts are! I stopped by to have a look around Essex Market and my eyes got attracted straight away to the colorful desserts. I had the pumpkin & walnut pie which I thoroughly enjoyed sat at the wavy countertop (with comfy chairs!) while taking in the great atmosphere of the Market. I could not go home empty handed so, I bought a lemon tart, a passion fruit & banana pie and the last pumpkin & walnut pie of the day. No need to say that they were all very tasty, perfect combination of flavors and that they go very well with a nice dessert wine. I will definitely return there to try the other desserts!

Per M.

Yelp
Wonderful experience. We enjoyed wine and dessert while speaking with Suzy. The pastries are amazing and we will definitely be back.

Nina Y.

Yelp
We LOVE this place!!! Since they opened at the Essex market at the downstairs mall, we are missing their deserts on Mondays and Tuesday when they are close. Today, I tried the red wine produced by the owner's brother in France- it was marvelous Chateau Potensac, Bordeaux (hope I spelled it correctly:) , serveved by the kind Susin

Yelp
I was doing some shopping through Essex Market & downstairs The Marketline on Salon Sucré opening event; Got to mingle with guests and sample a croissant and a kouign amann no less. We have since returned for coffee and pastries to-go. Everyone loved them!
