The 20 Essential Long Beach Restaurants

"Always order the namesake gumbo at Sal’s two Long Beach locations, but don’t miss the po’ boys, candied yams, cornbread, oxtails, mac and cheese, and the occasional pound cake special. There are a few tables to dine inside at either shop, but the food also holds up well for takeout." - Mona Holmes, Brian Addison

If you are not doing this, do it right damn now. Support Black Businesses! I drive from O.C. for the smothered turkey chops. It is very difficult to find a restaurant who serves this, making me miss St. Louis a little more. The turkey chops are well seasoned....allow me to reiterate the turkey chops are well seasoned. The yams here are on... point!! If your yams are not dark colored, I'm convinced you are being served Glory yams. This spot is authentic I'm definitely getting what I paid for. Delicious food, reasonably portioned and the staff has been inviting and polite even on the phone. I have visted this joint 4x and they have yet to disappoint. Yes my simple behind has ordered the same thing each time but I notice that they have Gumbo with turkey ham instead of pork. Therefore I must try it soon, I will not be able to compare it with anyone else's Gumbo because I've never had Gumbo before. Please continue to circulate money in the Black community while enjoying a well prepared meal. (314)

Google
They shouldn’t have to post a sign at the register explaining why the pricing has changed.. absolutely due to inflation ! If grocery stores & gas stations don’t care we should never question our own.. support black businesses especially when the food & service is great! The staff at both locations are helpful & professional..See you guys soon and I want my turkey again for thanksgiving it always a fam favorite! Thank you all at Sal’s Gumbo Shack 🩷

Google
Ordered the large bbq shrimp , shrimp and grits… was told about 20 min, waited 50 min , shrimps had soggy shells couldn’t hardly eat them, last time I had them it was no shells, bait and switch ….. still had poop in the shrimps, couldn’t eat them… sauce was bland and just tasted like buttery oil. The shrimp and grits were okay, but…. Not worth the money or the time I waited. I liked this place but this experience was so disappointing I had to leave a review and will never go back. Customer service is the opposite of warm and friendly, very dry and dim . Made me sad to feel like I can’t patron this black owned business because I just can’t believe what I just paid for and tasted …

Randomly came here for something different and walked away with an experience to remember. The atmosphere is so colorful and clean. The owner is helpful, pleasant and gave great first time suggestions. The food was piping hot, fresh and attractive. 10/10 OVERALL EXPERIENCE HIGHLY RECOMMEND FOR PEOPLE WHO LOVE GREAT FOOD AND LOVE FOOD THAT FILLS THE SOUL 🎭

Having tried authentic Cajun food from Louisiana I decided to try this location for the first time. A new local spot in the Bixby area, slow paced and calm environment. We sat in for this meal, simple dine and dash style type of place, nothing fancy. We ordered the Gumbo and Jambalaya, toasted bread and some beverages. The Gumbo was tasty but a bit watery, not the Louisiana style I've had but very close to it flavor wise. Would like see some legs on those crabs. lol. The jambalaya was very good, shrimp, chicken and sausage came together with the right amount of spice but I didn't see any beans.. hmm. The service was great. Maria was very attentive and cooked everything on the spot. Overall this was a decent place to try some Cajun food not local to this area. Will be coming back to try some po boys!

Google
This place is hidden from the main road, so I was surprised to see this place across from Smart and Final. Glad I checked it out! The food is freshly made, and the ingredients are good quality as well. The gumbo was delicious, packed with meat, and the shrimp po' boy was easily a favorite. It was so good I forgot to take a pic!

Hello its Rodney Allen Rippy. It's good to be back in my city Long Beach. I'm with a wonderful group and we are all dining at Sal's Gumbo Shack. I had an awesome Po Boys sandwich and it was awesome!

I've been to the Long Beach Blvd. location, however, this is my first time here at the Bixby Knolls location. The inside of the restaurant makes you feel like you are in New Orleans. Nothing fancy, clean vibe. Sal's is known for their Gumbo, but they do have other good soul food selections on the menu. I ordered the Fried Chicken Plate 3 pieces and it comes with 2 side dishes of your choice and cornbread. I went with Red Beans and Rice and Candied Yams. My friend ordered the Catfish Dinner Plate with Mac and Cheese and Fried Okra. Everything is made to order, be prepared to wait. Good food takes time. The fried chicken was lightly battered, and crispy on the outside but very moist and had good flavor but a bit salty to my taste. The red beans and rice were excellent. The candied yams were good but a bit sweet. My friend Catfish Plate was just average. The catfish filet was too small, more like nuggets but fried well. I love the Mac and Cheese, creamy and cheesy. The fried okra was just average. I wish they give free refills on lemonade and iced tea. The service was excellent. Very welcoming and friendly and had great updates while we were waiting. Will come back again.

Yelp
There's a hard-working man cranking out delicious hot meals from the kitchen. I ate mine so fast that I forgot to take a picture!. I had the catfish dinner, and the catfish was very crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. It was also full of flavor. The greens were tender and delicious. I also tried the gumbo, which is usually not my favorite, so I just bought a small one to try it. I should have purchased a large. Delicious. I'll be back

Yelp
This was my first time at this Bixby Knolls location. The inside and outside were clean and made me feel like I was in New Orleans. There are ALOT of items on the menu, not just gumbo. We ordered a medium gumbo to share. The rice is served in the same container. The flavor is truly authentic, one of the best in Southern California. Ky greeted us and took our order. Our food didn't take long to arrive. If you want good gumbo, give them a try.

Yelp
Yum, I love their Gumbo. Even the small bucket can fill you up. The shrimp and sausage is their main protein so it has some nice kick to it. Service is very quick and prep time would be a 5-10 minute wait. Really chill place to get a nice bowl of gumbo.

Yelp
The SMOTHERD CHICKEN . I came in to find some comfort and I was recommended fried chicken smothered by thier gravy,, that they make daily and when needed. That gravy has healing. The staff members have been nothing but sweet they remember me . Its been ages that ive felt a warm smile when I walk in anywhere. I know I have to try other items but this is my treat. The ambiance is chill mellow and ur thier to eat . Im greatful for all of you guys

Yelp
I love Sal's! Some of my favorite dishes include the Turkey wings, Turkey Burger, Red Beans & Rice and Fried Okra. I know, all over the place! Service is great and there are a few tables of you choose to eat there instead of picking up. Definitely my go-to when I'm craving soul food in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Oh my, I could not stop eating, it was delicious! My taste buds were in heaven! Thank you, I loved it.

Yelp
Such tasty gumbo. I came for the gumbo and it didn't disappoint. Giant meaty crab leg in my serving.. tender ingredients, very generous.. not too much rice.. subtle yet deep flavors. Extremely comforting without being heavy.

Yelp
Good food takes time! Our group just enjoyed several different offerings: catfish po'boy, fried chicken plate, salmon croquettes and grits, and a fried catfish-shrimp plate. The po'boy was delicious, and the chicken plate was very solid. The sides were good; greens had that nice vinegar throughout the broth, and the red beans and rice were flavorful. Having been to both locations, we'll be back to this one for sure too!

Yelp
I did not enjoy this gumbo or my experience. Made an online order. It was cancelled and I saw the notification as I pull up. I call because I wanted to see what was up. The person from this location (bixby) answers and tells me my Oder was cancelled at the other one because they had to unexpectedly close 2 hours early. They could have said that in the email. So I drive to the next location after ordering over the phone. 1st, I wanted rice on the side but with the mix up I didn't get to order right. I told her and she was like sorry, too late. But then I didn't really want to pay because it was a mess in there. Stuff everywhere, cluttered, the front area had papers everywhere, like trashy looking. I just dont think that's appealing. I went through with it because they're known for gumbo so I felt it was cool. And... I didn't like the gumbo . It's seafood gumbo but the roux didn't taste like seafood and it didn't taste like normal gumbo. It put me in the mind of beef stew. I got the medium. It only had 4 baby size shrimp. If these were normal or medium size shrimp, 4 would have been cool. Not with shrimp the size of a quarter though. I got two small pieces of a piece of crab. Again, for medium size, I'd expect 2 good size pieces or 3 small. The rice was at the bottom. It was kinda mushy and had clumps. And next, the sausage wasn't cooked. It was just in there and too much. Lastly, I like pieces of chicken in my gumbo. This, no - the chicken was all shredded. Not many substantial pieces. I will not try this again. The 3 stars is for the koolaid. I got tropical punch and it was BOMB!

Sherril R.

Yelp
When folks ask me where do I go for gumbo in New Orleans...I respond my cousins house. The gumbo at Sal's is the gumbo I am familiar with! This Belizean chef is on point! Jambalaya PERFECT! Dry, spicy, plenty of sausage and shrimp. Her island goodness well represented with oxtails... best in LA! Looking forward to tasting the rest of the menu!

Yelp
Lunch date with friends. Sorry no pictures but let's say we drove from the IE to get here. This food was worth the wait so be prepared. Gumbalaya came nice and hot, fried okra fresh and crispy, they use real potatoes for the French fries, po boy had a nice amount of shrimp with that Louisiana sauce.

Stephanie S.

Yelp
I normally don't do reviews. I drove to my neighbor city of Long Beach ...I was dissatisfied 100%.The Gumbo tasted like scorched Campbell soup with absolutely no gumbo roux taste .And the nerve to put one struggle crab the size of a cigarette . $28 I was charged for a large the size of a coffee cup that was super bland ‍ SMH was not worth it . I cook gumbo and I would be embarrassed to serve this to the public ( see my gumbo my pictures full of flavor and sufficient size crabs, andouille sausage and shrimp) The Rex Po boy was super salty with no true flavor the salt overpowered all I couldn't taste catfish only salty battered shrimp .The beans were ok the 2 tablespoons on top of the rice .Must do better on the gumbo roux. Hopefully they do better in the future .

Yelp
I called Sals on LB blvd on 4/2/24 when I was 2min away pulling up literally making my order. The owner Sally's tells me 20 minutes I'm like geesh ok. I pulled up seen two people waiting to get there food, so I waited my time because I was already parked outside by the time we finished taking my order. I decided to go inside because I'm 5month expecting so I needed to use the restroom, I asked Sally was the restroom opened she said yes it should be, once I get to the restroom she's coming from the kitchen to Unlock the restroom door from the kitchen side, washed my hands No paper towels, had to use my Dress to open the door with my wet hands, get to the counter to pay for my food, Lemonade already prepared with ice watering the lemonade down I get my food go to my car, fries are cold like they've sat longer than 20 minutes burger, warm, I called back inside to them know, her assistant was nice and helpful told me to come back inside they'll give me fries, soon I walked in the door, Sally started going THEE HELL OFF, saying " That's why we don't like to make food until yall here waiting to pick it up" I'm like excuse me who are talking too, you told me a time and I timed as i should, Sally opened my plate with her bare green fingernails hands, touched my fries next to my burger, after she just finished taking a phone order on register. We went back nd forth until she was like you want your money back, I'm like sure, literally messed up my appetite all day, Sally the owner really disappointed me. Never received this service from here, until this time. Need to be more professional & curiosity about your customer service and approach. It literally wasn't called for while other customers were in the restaurant.

Yelp
This is the place. Extra clean including restroom. Great atmosphere with the music and paintings. The people were so caring and accommodating. The food served fresh and hot. So so so good! Perfectly seasoned and perfect portions. Going back so I try everything on the menu. So far I had Catfish, Collard Greens, Yams, Honey Cornbread, Oxtails, MacNCheese and Red Velvet Cake and Sweet Tea. AMAZING!!!!!!! The food was so good that I forgot to take the picture until after I had already started eating.
google avatar

Yelp
Shrimp and grits also gumbo are good. I will try everything on the menu. One of my favorite places to eat out

Yelp
The food here were all incredibly tasty. We ordered the catfish with chips, fried pickles, gumbo, and oxtail dinner with candied yams, and Mac n cheese. It was all beyond what we expected. My personal favorites were the fried pickles and candied yams. Fried pickles were so crunchy/crispy and salty-sour in the middle. Candied yams was sweet and savory. I'm drooling just thinking about it. I'm a girl that loves the side food lol, and these were incredible. We will definitely be back to show support for business!!!

Nicole P.

Yelp
First off, I was excited to try this Gumbo shack. 2nd, I spent $153 for the food to be alright. The gumbo has no flavor at all, my 70 year old father (who used to be a chef) said his gumbo was nothing but colored water, and I agree. Sorry to say we will not recommend nor go back. It was a waste of $153, and my husband grabbed the baked turkey wings with Mac and greens. He said the turkey wing was ok, nothing special.
google avatar

Malicia S.

Yelp
First time eating here. I ordered the catfish dinner with yams and greens and a small gumbo. I've been craving gumbo for awhile and don't feel like making it lol. Everything was so good and I had to take what I didn't finish home. Well definitely be back. Good customer service, great ambiance and was glad they were open on Labor Day.

Hannah W.

Yelp
Had a really great lunch with my dad here today- the food was great (I got the BOO fries and he got the shrimp po boy) and finished with a banana pudding. We really want to come back to try more (I'm eyeing that fried chicken for sure) The service was great as well- very friendly. Fun atmosphere with a jazz/saxophone playlist that has modern hits. Looking forward to coming back soon!!
google avatar

Jenniffer Z.

Yelp
Wow. We tried a few items and all were so tasty! We had the fried chicken dinner, Turkey chops, and the shrimp boil. Then for dessert the 7 up cake. The food is not precooked at all, so expect to wait for a super fresh dish. The wait is so worth it though! The only thing we missed was the Mac n cheese because they were sold out for the day. More of a reason to want it more, it's so popular it's the first to go. Fried chicken was so flavorful, the shrimp boil was a great deal for the price, all the sides (greens, rice and gravy, yams) were also so tasty. I can't do it justice with words, you just gotta try it out yourself. I'm glad I have some swamp water to take home so I can keep enjoying that too!

Norrell M.

Yelp
They Sell Gumbo device was bad and they put these two small crabs legs for a 22.00 gumbo plate this what it look like I would not be coming again that is a shame
google avatar

Maureen P.

Yelp
Dinner tonight did not disappoint. Crisp hot fried okra, gumbo, and a po'boy sandwich were perfection. Manager Cece was super friendly. We need to return more often! Coming earlier in the evening next time, so they aren't out of jambalaya!

Aidan B.

Yelp
The food is great and fresh, yams and mac and cheese were amazing, great service as well. Also make sure you get the every flavor kool aid.
google avatar

Ramon J.

Yelp
What a big disappointment, we ordered take out yesterday , fried pickles, fried chicken and gumbo and peach cobbler Fried pickles was greasy and no breading Fried Chicken has no seasoning at all but nice and crispy Gumbo is okay as well as the cobbler
google avatar

Au'niece C.

Yelp
The man was rude and aggressive because I didn't order right away...I ordered a shrimp po boy and bit into some salty ass fried pickels ...never again!!! Rex Po Boy

Marisa P.

Yelp
What can I say about Sal's gumbo shack. The only issue I have with this establishment is the gumbo!!!!! I ordered the biggest gumbo they had and I received two skimpy crab claws. I mean there was no meat in the crab legs!! I received a lot of sausage, broth and and small shrimp! Very disappointing. I say broth because it didn't have that file flavor and the broth was see through - very watery in my opinion. I've been contemplating on giving them another try - I'm not sure if I want to give them a second chance!!!
google avatar

Anthony G.

Yelp
I'm a resident of the north long beach area. I posted my recent struggles in my family on the next door app reaching out for a turkey for my family. Sal kindly offered a plate for my wife & I. My wife picked it up & I am so grateful to Sal for that. I didn't have to worry about my girls going without a meal tonight thanks to Sal. The food was so delicious from the rice to the juicy stuffing my goodness what a delicious meal!!!! Truly such a kind act will go such a long way for my family & I this holiday season.
google avatar

Alma Z.

Yelp
I had a shrimp po boy and some gumbo. I thought they were good. First time tasting gumbo and I liked it . The shrimp was crunchy and tasted fresh. Also Ms . Sally was very nice. Will be coming back to try something else

Stephanie B.

Yelp
Food took soooo long to get ready!!! Stopped there around 6, didnt get my one little plate until 7:08. To be a GUMBO shack, the gumbo wasnt even worth the wait. Fried shrimp were okay. Not somewhere Id come back to.
google avatar

Julie G.

Yelp
The best gumbo we have ever tried!!! Definitely coming back great service and the food makes you leave happy! Taste buds on fire definitely worth the trip!! Try for yourselves!!

Shane R.

Yelp
It tastes good and all but they take super long to make your order, I called in around 1:15, was told it would be ready in 15 mins, I get there 15 mins later and im told to wait 5 minutes, I dont get my food until 2pm. Might go again but this was super disappointing
google avatar

Elsa V.

Yelp
Glad to have tried dining in this restaurant... to have a creole cuisine in our neigborhood. Gumbalaya was gambolicious. Must try for creole lover!!! Chicken wings was crunchy on the outside and juicy/moist in the inside. Customer service was friendly. Restaurant interior...so colorful, nice murals.
google avatar

Queeny D.

Yelp
Wow - Good Food! If you want Creole Soul this is place Gumbo thick spicy Oxtails meaty Fried Chicken Perfect Crispy Flavorful Desserts Good 7Up Cake homemade Order whats available You'll be happy Service Friendly Smiley Genuine Im not from area found them on an Search & I will return

Yelp
Got the gumbo/jambalaya and it was soooo good! The crab legs in it were great, lots of amazing sausage, nice kick, so flavorful! Omgoodness! I will be back!!!

Joe K.

Yelp
Went there are a whim just to try someplace new. Ordered a $15 hamburger and a $15 Po Boy sandwich. The burger was the worst burger I've ever had. Overpriced, tough, and way over cooked. The fries that accompanied it were among the worst fries I've ever had. They were thin and obviously boiled in old, used oil as they had the odd flavor of shrimp, which isn't what you want to taste when eating fries. The Po Boy was about 6 small shrimp on a $0.25 cent hotdog bun. Flavor was just meh. To make matters worse, I had to wait 30 minutes for a burger and a sandwich. The rest of the menu was ridiculously priced. I mean, $30 for a quart of gumbo soup! Avoid this place like the plague.
google avatar

Zharmaine B.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place! I love Sal. She's so sweet and funny!! Amazing cook with an amazing atmosphere. Please consider ordering ahead of time for pick up

Chase F.

Yelp
Best Jambalaya I have ever had and I love Jambalaya. The owner herself made it and was so gracious and kind when I ordered a large variety of items from the menu, because it was my first time. I did not realize that she was short staffed that day and had I known I would have selected just a couple of items. I ordered fried chicken dinner with rice and red beans, okra, jambalaya and peach cobbler and every single bit of it was delicious! It was worth the wait and I will be back!
google avatar

Gina H.

Yelp
Ordered the shrimp dinner and I was told it would take 15 mi minutes. Once I was served my food, the greens & cornbread were cold & they heated my macaroni & cheese in the microwave which was in a Styrofoam container. I didn't notice until I got to the bottom. I was offered another container for my trouble instead of my money back. Never heat food in Styrofoam guys. It changes the taste of the food & it can also make you sick. The staff was pleasant, however my expectations were high for the amount of money that was spent.

Elise V.

Yelp
My boyfriend was craving Cajun food, which I've never really had, so we came to Sal's. The customer service was incredible; I didn't really know what anything was and they kindly explained everything to me and helped me order. The food was GREAT. I had the fried chicken dinner with Mac n cheese, red beans and rice, cornbread, and sweet tea. All of it was great but the fried chicken was the best I've ever had. My boyfriend got the gumbolaya and fried okra, both of which we loved. Definitely recommend!!
google avatar

Manny B.

Yelp
I was craving a Po' Boy, so I took trip up to the recently opened 2nd location of Sal's Gumbo Shack in the Bixby Knolls area. I got their Rex Po' Boy. It has both shrimp and catfish and comes dressed with lettuce, tomato, and creamy sauce. I also got a side of their Cajun Fries. The shrimp and catfish were nicely fried and packed a good crunch. The fries were hot, fresh, and delicious with the Cajun seasoning. If you're looking for some legit Louisiana eats, Sal's Gumbo Shack definitely has you covered. I already got my eyes on some things for my next visit. Get on down and show them some love!!
google avatar

Kristen P.

Yelp
Wow this food was so delicious. I only got a side a grits because i am refraining from eating meat but let me tell you these were the best grits i ever had. They were cooked to perfection, side of grits was not on the menu but the chef kindly agreed to whip up a pot fresh. I am so thankful, i will for sure be back. My friends had the gumbo and the shrimp and grits they said it was the best they ever had. Dont sleep on this place support them to keep this business in the community because they are worth every penny!
google avatar

Zaigra M.

Yelp
This is my first time being here. It did not disappoint one bit. I love their little restaurant. The waiter was very attentive.
google avatar

Cecine N.

Yelp
I loved their gumbo! It was so delicious and full of flavor. Crab was easy to manage and the sausage was everything! I also got a side of fried okra and greens! The service was great and I will surely return!
google avatar

Name Poetry Keepsakes I.

Yelp
Sad to say kind of disappointing I ordered a seafood boil bag, the sauce was really dry like a whole bunch of seasons, rather salt and pepper just mixed together. Not sure what kind of potatoes they use but the skin was a really rough. The fried pickles was pretty good, very very salty considering pickles are already salty the batter was a bit too seasoned. Prices are kind of high looks like most after other customers inside had ordered fried chicken they all looked more satisfied than I did.
google avatar

Charles S.

Yelp
Great place to go for a scrumptious meal. The gumbo will fill your belly. The fried okra & dipping sauce will have you asking for more. And the fried chicken will have your taste buds remembering, no where have I tasted something this good.

Jenna S.

Yelp
I love this spot so much! Me and my boyfriend get it once a week if not more. I like the baked Turkey plate the best! The candied yams are one of the bests I've had. I always get that and Mac as a side. My go to soul food spot!

Julie B.

Yelp
We absolutely love everything they have on their menu. Everything is prepared as you wait. Fresh and hot when served. Smothered turkey chops, oxtails, shrimp po'boys are a must have. And the sides.... Greens, candies yams, Mac n cheese we love it all. The folks that work there are the nicest down to earth good people that make you feel good. They truly appreciate your business. The atmosphere is good ol New Orleans Bourbon Street. Stop on and enjoy!!!
