"Located in a small brick building in Old Metairie, this family-operated stand has been around since 1960. It does it up old-school style, meaning plenty of traditional flavors, huge blocks of ice brought in daily, and plenty of outdoor seating. Sal’s is open until 10 p.m., refreshingly late." - Beth D'Addono, Eater Staff

Didn't like the flavors at all. Too sweet. Tried ice cream and it was yellow, coffee was watery, nectar, orange and raspberry too sweet. Chunky ice. Threw mine away and my daughter only wanted half. Husband always finishes even if he dislikes. Hansen's or Imperial Woodpecker so much better !

I had a hankering for a snoball. Bae mentioned going to Sals & we decided to stop by for a visit. I ordered the S'mores white chocolate chip (it's the white & tan pics) he got the Cotton candy and tangerine (red & orange). I got to looking at mine & noticed little black specks n it. I believe it was in the white chocolate chip side. Naturally got to digging & noticed a little red stem which I gave to him & somehow he managed to lose it b4 I took a picture of it.. I was disappointed. I ended up throwing it away because I know most snoball stands don't give refunds. We went to Sno Shak & I got the snoball I didn't get from Sal's Not sure what happened but I was really disappointed I don't think, I'll at least, would b coming back

Google
Delicious snowballs from a legendary place. Lovely location where you can sit on tree stumps and enjoy your treat. This place is a nonstop, busy place, but service is quick with many windows open to serve you.

Google
Pretty good sno, but with so many others nearby, I still want to keep trying others. The lady that took our order must’ve been having a bad day. She was visibly annoyed at the questions my family asked about the flavors and the sizes. Overall it was a good value at under $25 for 6 of us, and they had lots of options.

J Legg

Google
Sal's is the best here bar none! This is the only place in the city serving snowballs well into the night. They are extremely fast and well organized, not to mention very clean. I enjoyed my tangerine flavored snowball while watching the line grow, then disperse just as quickly once receiving their tasty cold treats. Sal's has earned my business by doing what all successful businesses do, work!

Google
One of two of the best Snow Ball stands in the New Orleans area. My favorite is half ice cream and half cherry flavors. My wife’s favorite is half chocolate and half cherry. With that said, you can’t go wrong with any choice of flavors when you are at Sal’s. I’ve been going to Sal’s for over forty-eight years and have never been disappointed. BTW, for all of you non locals please don’t call them Snow Cones.

Brooke L.

Google
Hands down best snowball stand in the greater New Orleans area! Cash only and like a standard snowball stand no gloves and they handle cash and your snowball… but unfortunately that’s expected

Michel Colwet Null

Google
Best snowballs in the area. Best syrup, best ice. There's a reason local people have snowball logos monogrammed on their shirts. It's an old Metairie establishment open since 1960 and nice employees, just the best around!

Yelp
Editing to say we went back again the next day and already planning to return before our trip ends!! The kings cake with sweetened condensed milk was awesome!

Chloe W.

Yelp
We found this classic stand to be the perfect spot for Sno-Balls during a sweltering July afternoon! With low prices and a wide variety of flavors, it was the perfect place to satisfy our entire group. I tried the chocolate mint, which was amazing, but the wedding cake was also a big hit. Note: they only accept cash, so be prepared!

M H.

Yelp
Fun flavors. Great service and loved sitting in the sun to enjoy the sweet treat. I tried the yellow cake with chocolate soft serve. It was good. Can't wait to pass by again and try another flavor.

Yelp
I just realized I've been coming to Sal's since I was ten years old, which means... I'm old! Well, that's true, but it also means that Sal's is someplace special. For 36 years this has been THE ONLY place I get snowballs from. The ice is so smooth and no one skimps on the syrup! They also offer soft serve ice cream here, but I am a snowball girl through and through. It's the perfect summer treat and always perfectly delicious. There are plenty of tree stumps to sit on while you enjoy your sweet snack and the staff are always friendly and helpful. Sal's is a neighborhood gem, and when I come home to visit family I make time to pop by for my fix. This is also a hot spot for kids of all ages and they love to gather here. Encourage them to sit down to eat so the mess stays at Sal's and not on the seat of your car. PS Get the chocolate! It's an additional .50 but WORRH EVERY PENNY!

Yelp
We have been going to Sals for years. We went tonight (6/9/24) and it unfortunately will be our last time. Several problems: Last time and this time, the snowballs had no flavor. Last time we noticed that and thought it was just the employee not giving enough syrup. Twice with no flavor, must have changed policy on the amount of syrup. It was like eating ice. The other problem is the staff is mostly high school age kids. Not one adult to be seen. There was a fairly long line and 4 girls were in the back talking to each other. When it was our turn, one employee was helping us and another girl came to talk (distract) her. The conversation went something like this: "I can't believe she only paid me $20 for working a double shift on Sunday, it's so busy". "Yes, it is crazy today. $20 is terrible". I have no idea if $20 is good for a double shift at a snowball stand, but as a customer I probably shouldn't have been privy to this conservation, I would have preferred the attention on fulfilling my order instead in complaining about salary. To the owner: consider adding an adult to watch the staff behavior and the quality of their work.

Mark A.

Yelp
Being a New Orleans resident, I grew up coming to Sals for over 20 years and have never had a complaint yet. Last week I noticed the ice has not been the same consistency and this week have dealt with the same issue. I am not sure if it is the workers there or what but the issue needs to be addressed. Multiple other family and friends have said the same. The flavors are still the best in town but the ice needs to get back to how it used to be!

Panette P.

Yelp
Chocolate soft serve- hit the spot. Open late, good parking, Prompt and friendly service

Sarah J.

Yelp
Friendly staff and delicious snoballs! Good prices and they put a lot of syrup! I got the pink squirrel which is nectar and almond and it's sooo goood. Next time will try it stuffed!

Jose C.

Yelp
It was a hot day in New Orleans. We were in the area and decided to get some sno cones. It's cash only, and the prices are very reasonable. The staff was very welcoming and fried friendly. We ordered Cotton Candy, Pina Colada and their Kings Cake. We added condensed milk to the pina colada and kings cake. These were really sweet and very tasty. They remind me of Raspados served with lechera. Wouldn't mind coming back here.

Peter C.

Yelp
Good stuff here! Fun outdoor seating, great place to eat and hang out. Tons of folks.

Megan M.

Yelp
Don't drive to fast, nestled in a beautiful community Sal's is a great and amazing priced snowball stand. Children at play you find tons of families and people walking up to the stand to be greated by fun and smiling faces. With ice and flavors that just melt in your mouth you cant help but come back everyday lol. The separate line for placing orders and checking out. A few favorites (polar punch mixed with kiwi, strawberry and pink lemonade with ice cream )

Philip L.

Yelp
Sal's Sno-Ball Stand in Metairie is a quintessential New Orleans spot with a cherished place in many people's hearts. Sal's is our #1 favorite place for snowballs. It's a very affordable daily treat, with an unpretentious community/family feel. Lines aren't that long (unlike Hansen's Snobliz, which is great but wait is pretty long and prices are 2x or more). Sno-ball ice at Sal's has the right smooth texture, service is friendly, and there's a ton a flavors. Worth mentioning is the vanilla soft-serve is pretty darn good. I would get it many more times - it has a firm, high quality texture and tastes great. Way better than McDonald's, Chick fil-A, and most any other place I can recall. Back to the sno-balls, we got Robin (nectar and ice cream); Wedding Cake (vanilla and almond); Smores; and White Chocolate Chip. All the flavors were perfectly on point and delicious. I grew up on Wedding Cake flavor, just like I remember. We asked for less syrup for most of the snoballs and they still tasted pretty good. Plenty of tree stumps to sit on, lots of parking, and always a nice crowd with probably 1 in 10 folks wearing local sports apparel (LSU, Saints). We got the smallest size (only $1.40 plus tax) but even the medium size is just around $2. One of best things about visiting New Orleans is that the best stuff is so accessible - there's several top snoball places; Cafe du Monde or Morning Call beignets for $3 and coffee; gumbo; king cake (early in the year); pralines at Southern Candymakers or Loretta's.

Alex S.

Yelp
Sal's ice is a little bit crunchy, not as flaky and soft as other snow ball places. The strawberry and peach flavors were sweet and fruity but not strong flavors. The two fruits were indistinguishable from one another. The condensed milk was tasty but I wish there was more and that it could spread throughout. The soft serve was a nice addition that not all snow ball places offer. It tasted like a vanilla frozen custard.

Ellen Y.

Yelp
Cheap and delicious. The best sno ball in New Orleans. You order by the price (not size) and there's so many flavors. You can get their sno balls stuffed, which means there's soft serve in the middle. Plenty of parking and tree stumps to sit on.

B P.

Yelp
Fast service and I love how you can get chocolate or vanilla ice cream inside your snow ball ! I get the banana stuffed with chocolate

Michelle H.

Yelp
i always loved Sal's .Its in my neighborhood and used to be one of my favorites...The last 3 or 4 times hasnt been so good. One time my snowball was made with half melted hard ice in the tray and i couldnt even stick the straw in it. The other times ,very little syrup and the condensed milk less than skimpy.Today, I am at the window. It wasn' busy, there were young girls chatting away about their apartments and one had a furnished apt and one had an unfurnished apt. and they were graduating next year....actually adorable young women... i just wanted to be acknowledged and get a decent snowball...and today it was kids running a business.Im sure I will go back but I'm hoping its better.

Ellery D.

Yelp
Apparently this place is a Metairie institution. My friend has been coming here and eating on the same stumps out front since he was a kid in the 80s. I, however, didn't make it there till the other night. I first tried the diet wedding cake flavor and it was bomb--strong taste of almond. Second time I got a half and half wedding cake/ strawberry, and their strawberry flavor is worth a try too. It reminds me of Welch's soda. They're open later than most snowball stands, which I appreciate, and the prices are good. My only critique would be the height of the snowballs. They're not quite as stacked as I'm used to, but the snow is an unusually fine texture which I enjoyed.

Michael B.

Yelp
Excellent Sno-Balls! Great prices (see pictures) and we had a great time talking and sitting on the stumps outside. Easy parking right in front of the building. Friendly and courteous employees! I had the Robin and it was delicious. In our group we also had the dreamsicle, raspberry, pink squirrel and cherry/lime. All the flavors were very good! Highly recommend giving it a try!

Ashley H.

Yelp
Easy to find and convenient - parking and atm. Be forewarned it is cash only $20 or less. Pretty reasonably priced. We have been to a few snoball spots during our visits and this was ok. Not the most flavorful syrups but good sno texture/softness. Overall, worth a stop in! I didn't try the condensed milk topping but they say it's good on chocolate syrups.

Glen L.

Yelp
They are noticeably skimpy on the syrup lately. Not sure if I will go back. This is truly a gyp now.

Jen B.

Yelp
Oh, how I have missed real sno-balls. Seriously. You just can't get a real one outside of Louisiana. We were heading to meet friends at one of the other well-known establishments when our friend suggested this location instead. She said it was up there in the top three so I was game. So good and I LOVE how cheap sno-balls can be. The list is long with flavors that include Tiger's Blood and Spearmint. They aren't a legit Louisiana Sno-ball stand if they don't have those two and a cream option. The sitting area outside with the stumps is perfect, too. I'll be back on every trip!

Katelynn B.

Yelp
Easily one of my favorite Snoball stands! The ice is always soft. My favorite flavor of all time is joker Snoball stuffed with vanilla ice cream + condensed on top. Line goes by fairly quickly and the tree stumps to sit are nice when you want to enjoy your treat there. Side note -- probably the only snoball stand that adds tax to the prices!

Brianna B.

Yelp
Yum! I was randomly craving a sno-ball and this was the only place open late near me on a Sunday night. I got a small cotton candy (smallest size they had) and my husband got a small cherry and lime. Their smallest size is actually a true small (like kiddie small). I like that because some places have smalls that are too big and I never end up finishing them. With that said, they have larger sizes to choose from if you like bigger sno-balls. The ice was smooth and didn't have a pellet-like texture like some other places I've tried have. And the cotton candy actually tasted like cotton candy. I also thought it was really cute that this is an actual stand where you order outside. They have tree stumps to sit on and eat outside, too. If it wasn't chilly out, I definitely would've sat outside and enjoyed my sno-ball. Out of all the sno-balls I've tried in the Nola area, I'd say Sal's and Hansen's are my top two. So happy I discovered this place tonight (and that it's so close to my apartment)!

Rebecca B.

Yelp
Very nice, friendly, immaculate, neighborhood type snowball stand conveniently located at the intersection of Bonnabel & Metairie Rd (next to Majoria Drugs). They have a good selection of flavors plus ice cream treats. I recommend mixing Dreamsicle with Tangerine but there's plenty to choose from and lots of sizes from tiny to huge. Ordering is by price point (not XS-XL) and it is CASH ONLY. There's plenty of outside seating available on smooth cut tree stumps arranged under shade.

Tim N.

Yelp
I get the nostalgia of this outdoor only Sno Cone Hut since it's been around since 1960. And a small (styrofoam coffee cup size) is $1.00. But it is a sugar gutbomb and I only could eat half of that portion before I was overcome with sugar nausea. Or something like that. It is a fun summer place to take the kids, who never seem to get enough sugar or to mind. At least 3 adults had the gut bomb thing, so there you go.

Anrana S.

Yelp
Apparently sno-balls are a New Orleans thing. Pretty much it is shaved ice. Or you can get a stuffed sno-ball. Which means they somehow add vanilla soft serve into the middle. I got the $1.10 stuffed sno-ball with coffee syrup. It was super sweet. And there was no discernible coffee flavor. And I personally thought the combination of shaved ice and ice cream did NOT work. It was just a real clash Reminded me of ice cream that had melted and refrozen and had gotten all crystallized As I said, maybe it's just me and my Boston taste buds. On the plus side, prices are really cheap.

Mel E.

Yelp
If you're willing to get out of the French Quarter for some good ol Sno-Ball, Sal's is a great getaway from the craziness. Located within a neighborhood, this sno-ball stand has an array of flavors of the popular New Orleans style soft shaved ice. Did I mention there are tons of options for flavors, in addition to them, you can also add extras like condensed milk, ice cream, fruit, whipped cream and nuts for an extra price. Ranging from the $1 small to the large $8 sno ball sizes, and then their cups & cones of ice cream sizes, this place definitely gives you the bang for your buck. I've had my share of Hawaiian shaved ice, Filipino shaved ice, and Italian ice, and I must say, the sno-ball might be inching away to the top of my list. The customer service I encountered, and as well with the other patrons, was very nice and friendly. Being a visitor I felt the warm and fuzzy feeling at this place. This stand is causal and chill. The tree stumps for the seating area is a nice touch, which also makes it easier for big crowds. I can only imagine when the weather is really warm out, business is poppin. I went a little after dinner and there was a continuous flow of people driving in to the parking lot. This place is kid and pet friendly and open til 11 PM. I wish I had this around the corner of my neighborhood.

Mano G.

Yelp
Love old Metairie, entire setting is perfect for a little outing, but, I had to give this place a second try before writing this review, even asking to pay for extra juice and condensed milk, the snoball is still dry.. my first experience, it wasn't tasteful like other places, came back a second time asked for extra everything, was willing to pay whatever, but it's still very boring and just dry.. nonetheless, nice place.

Jamie B.

Yelp
every city in the area seems to have their snoball stand an Metairie's is Sal's. (snola is a close second). Sal's has the thinnest ice but not only that, they give you extra syrup and (if you want) extra condensed milk. So every spoonful is juicy and awesome. They are a year round joint but with shorter hours in the "cold" months. I highly recommend.

Todd B.

Yelp
One of two of the best Snow Ball stands in the New Orleans area. My favorite is half ice cream and half cherry flavors. My wife's favorite is half chocolate and half cherry. With that said, you can't go wrong with any choice of flavors when you are at Sal's. I've been going to Sal's for over forty-eight years and have never been disappointed. BTW, for all of you non locals please don't call them Snow Cones.

Allen L.

Yelp
Soooooo good. A friend recommended "nectar cream" and it was delicious. Not sure what flavor "nectar" is - probably a mystery like "liger". Sal's is busy but the line moves really quickly. And you're bound to meet someone intersting.

Chris C.

Yelp
This stand has poor flavor selection, and the flavors are bland. There are so many better Sno-ball stands in NOLA. Skip the line, find a different place.

Jarred F.

Yelp
Great place to bring your family for a sweet treat. Love the logs and stumps they have for you to sit on. They have some really great flavors like Orchid Vanilla that aren't ones that you can just find anywhere, as well as some of the classic flavors like strawberry and such. When we came today there were family's and dogs so it was a nice little evening treat for us. Definitely will be back and highly recommend for a good family atmosphere for a snowball

Caroline W.

Yelp
Friendly neighborhood snoball stand that's been here for years. Love that they have high school kids working this stand. Cash only, enjoy their late hours, and I feel safe in this neighborhood too! Sal's has normal flavors you would get at any Sno-Ball stand, but the secret is getting your Sno-Ball stuffed! My go to is usually chocolate/vanilla ice cream. So good and definitely a life changer!

Marielle S.

Yelp
This is an Old Metairie classic that was pretty packed on the night I was here, but thankfully the line moved fast. This seems to be the "teenage hangout" and I think I was the oldest person here (who wasn't a parent) on the night that I stopped in. I decided to get the rainbow flavor, because I've been on a rainbow kick lately and rainbow is different at every stand. At this particular stand, the rainbow flavor was really good and tasted like melted ice cream. Their prices are a little more steep than Westbank stands, but by "steep" I mean 50 cents more...so not horrible. The ice isn't as fine as some other places, but I found it smooth and the syrup pour was generous. Along with snowballs, they have an assortment of ice cream cones. The people in front of me got some swirl cones that looked delicious! I will be back if I find myself in the area.

Mike C.

Yelp
4.5 stars Sal's is definitely a top 5 pick for snowballs in the metro New Orleans area. Located on Metairie Rd near Bonnabel Blvd, this stand has been a snowball mainstay for years. I have never passed this place and seen less than a half dozen people either standing in line or sitting on one of the two "telephone pole sized" pine logs eating their snowballs. Last night's visit was no different. There were two lines working to keep up with the demand but each line only had 3-4 people in it so service still remains very quick. There were also at least 15-20 people, mostly children, enjoying their snowballs on the premises and the parking lot was reminiscent of a social gathering. Since I have been on somewhat of a snowball quest lately, I opted to get three dollar sized snowballs so that I could Yelp about multiple flavors. (Yeah, you heard me right, I got three snowballs). I did have my wife & son with me, so it's not like I ate all three (not that I don't have the skills). The1st flavor was "pink squirrel", which is a blend of nectar, almond and cream. This is a popular flavor here and it did not disappoint. It wasn't the greatest nectar stlye snowball I've ever had, but it was solid. The 2nd flavor was called "Robin", and Robin's got it going on. This ice cream and nectar blend is also another Sal's favorite and one bite will confirm why. Super sweet and creamy smooth, this snowball will make you a Sal's customer for life. The last flavor we tried was called "Joker" and it was the surprise I was not expecting. Normally, I tend to stay with the nectar, nectar cream or ice cream flavors. But this concoction of grape, blackberry and raspberry is the perfect thirst quencher on a hot summer day or night. It was totally refreshing with no syrup aftertaste either. But beware, this stuff stains skin like I couln't believe. I had to throw (not literally) my son in the tub as soon as we got home because the napkins and baby wipes were completely ineffective. The ice was definitely on the smooth side but there were a few chunks on the bottome, which is not the norm here. However, all in all, this plasce is a top pick.

Michelle Q.

Yelp
I love that they have two lines to stand in instead of one to purchase snowballs! The line moves extremely fast! The snowballs are always consistently delicious. The ice is so smooth.

Kelley H.

Yelp
This place is all that with friendly service! I drove from New Orleans when I was visiting bc I wanted an authentic snowball. I like the basics but my fiancé got the one with vanilla ice cream in the middle and loved it.

Eve G.

Yelp
They have amazing snowball flavor. Also got the banana split sundae. Amazing. They put pineapple sauce, cherry, nuts, chocolate syrups on top with whip cream. Delicious

Kasey J.

Yelp
Am pregnant and was craving green apple... traveled all over BFE to find a stand open. Finally get here, and they were out... what sno-ball stand doesn't have green apple?? not to mention, the service was not great. After I was disappointment about not being able to order green apple, the girl left the window without coming back for about 5 minutes.. hormones were raging

Lindsey B.

Yelp
The best! Can't go wrong with anything you get! My favorite is pink squirrel or orchid vanilla with condensed milk! I could eat those all day, everyday!

Natalie H.

Yelp
This treat definitely reminds you of fresh fallen snow. The business solves about five common issues with neighborhood sno-ball stands: The ice is well-shaven and melts in your mouth without the hit-and-miss combo of shaved ice and crushed ice. They have a great assortment of flavors that are true to taste, and you receive enough syrup to keep the sno-ball consistent throughout. There is more than one window for taking customer orders and this along with their pleasant service ensures that there's no lengthy wait. Sal's offers more than your normal three sizes which is really helpful for parents with tots, or a person who isn't wanting a large treat. Due to the area it's in, their parking is extended to neighboring lots but there is one are directly in front of the stand. Lastly, they have a really cool seating area of tree stomps and cement blocks; you may see families gathered there making it a time of cool treats and outdoor play! Thanks Sal's for reminding us of how an authentic sno-ball should taste.

Emily T.

Yelp
I love Sal's Sno-Balls and always have to get one whenever I'm in town. My parents used to take me to this place when I was a toddler. The sno-balls are always delicious. My favorite flavor combinations are ice cream with condensed milk, half chocolate and half cherry, half chocolate and half ice cream, and half chocolate and half spearmint. They are always quick and it's a nice location. They have a wide variety of flavors to choose from. I usually get my sno-balls with a flat top so I can easily eat them in the car without being worried about making a mess. They take cash and do not accept bills larger than $20.

Brandon T.

Yelp
I've been getting my New Orleans snoball fix at Sal's since I was young. Whether with family, school, or church friends, I will always have fond memories of Sal's. Sno-balls, though they appear fairly simple with ice and syrup, can actually be more complex than it appears. The shaved ice is done differently at each stand and most importantly the syrup makes or breaks the snoball. Sal's does the best with both: soft shaved ice and delicious, accurate, not sticky syrups. You should visit this snoball stand next time, take a seat on those tree log seats, and take in the lovely atmosphere of Metairie Road.

Janna J.

Yelp
Some of the most unique snoball flavors I've ever seen. Sal's gets extra points for their late hours. I didn't realize they were only open during snoball season (last Saturday of February - third Wednesday of October for them) and was disappointed when I drove by one day to see they were closed. Can't wait to go back in February!

Steve I.

Yelp
Along with Casey's, these two are the best in Metairie if you are dying for a snoball. Great flavors at Sal's like wedding cake, chocolate, dreamsicle, cafe au lait, and nectar soda (my fave flavor). Open late till 10:30pm every day till late October!

Jen B.

Yelp
A classic snowball stand in the suburbs that has been serving up sugary shaved ice since before I can remember. I recently went along with a few friends who claim they would rather drive a little farther than wait in a long line in our neighborhood. The place was packed, but the line moved along quickly. The had a few sugar-free options, but not many. My friends all loved their flavor selections and I was pleased with my sugar-free strawberry. The prices were very cheap and the syrup was overflowing. Good stuff!

Alissyn H.

Yelp
I do declare: the best snoballs in Nola! My hubby and I have worked our way thru most of the flavors and they are all refreshing and scrumptious! Service with super cute smiles always! From Wedding Cake topped with condensed milk to Cherry Sip ( chocolate... Don't miss out!), Nectar, Spearmint, Orchid Vanilla... Unsurpassed syrup-y sweetness atop lightly flaked snowballs... Mouth watering... We need one now! See you there for the best snoballs ever!

Kathy-Ann C.

Yelp
Every time I'm in New Orleans I visit Sal's ! There is always a line but it moves quickly and you get great service. The cups are so big I've never been able to finish more than a kiddie size. So many flavors you could probably try new combinations for years. It's a quick, tasty, and cheap snack especially on a hot day.

Jamie B.

Yelp
Old Metairie definitely has a rare gem with this snowball stand. This so much parking and super fast service even on the busiest nights ! My favorite is "Pink Squirrel" which is nectar and almond mixed and stuffed with vanilla ice cream and then topped with condensed milk! The ice is always soft shaved . The best perk of all is this is one of very few that stay open late...
