Salsa's Taqueria - Review - Downtown - Mammoth - The Infatuation

"Salsa’s Taqueria is the perfect spot to pick up a quick taco, torta, or burrito before your next hike or adventure on the slopes. While there are small seating areas both indoors and on the sidewalk outside, it’s best to order your food to go. Their lunch options are all excellent, but the breakfast burrito, which is stuffed with eggs, beans, salsa, cheese, tater tots, and your choice of meat, is the best thing on the menu. It’s also super close to Distant Brewing, where they’ll let you bring your burrito over to pair with your craft beer for a “breakfast” of champions." - Danielle Bauter

Google
The alpine mountain country of Mammoth Lakes and Mexican cuisine isn't something that easily rolls off your tongue, and in fact, it's almost an awkward mismatch. But, who cares? On an overnight stop at Mammoth Lakes, I found this gem of a place in town. I wasn't that hungry, but I just needed to top off my tank and I ordered the fish taco here. Man, that hit the spot, it was delicious. My only criticism of this place is that the fish content was stingy. Given that, I ordered another taco, this time carnitas and that was also delicious. Again, their portions are small, but maybe because I am out of San Francisco where Mexican joints are plentiful, perhaps my expectations are different? Bottom line is, the food was excellent even if it lacks in generosity.

Google
Been meaning to go here for a long time (we usually eat at El Charro), and finally did today, Being a Tuesday, we got the taco special (3 tacos, chips, and a drink). I got pollo, carne asada, and carnitas. They were all delicious! They were also very filling. I only finished my meal because it was so tasty as I was full after the 2nd taco. Highly recommended.

Megha Jindal

Google
Loved the food, a lot of options, 10+ salsa options, spicy salsa had my heart Quesadilla was the best dish there in my opinion Super crowded and very slow service Sat to dine at tables which were not the cleanest.

Google
We came up to visit our daughter and she suggested this place. This was fantastic. I had the breakfast burrito. So much flavor. The entire time we were here they had nonstop business. Great hidden gem. We will be back soon.

Google
Service is great. Food is delicious. Been coming to Mammoth Lakes for over 30 years so we got to enjoy Salsa's Taqueria since they opened. Highly recommend.... Our favorite go to spot! Dining indoors or outdoors so you choose! Doesn't hurt to try it, no regrets for us! We dine there and also take home and always yummy.

Google
The prices are out of control. We ordered 6 very small Canada tacos Side of rice an order of FF And a chile verde burrito 64.35 The burrito had no verde sauce and a hard old flour tortilla. The women behind the counter ask one customer if his change was a tip He told her no

Google
Fantastic breakfast burrito, which comes with coffee. Salsa bar was very good, with well made salsas and hot carrots. Small dining room, and lots of canopy covered outdoor picnic tables. Single stall bathroom.

Salvador R

Google
Really great bites! Service was fast and the selection was pretty big to feed all likes. We had a birria taco special, torta al pastor, green chile pork burrito. Horchata was really good. Their salsas are really good and spicy.

Yelp
Was looking for a place to eat near the superchargers and found this place. Friendly staff and good amount of seating inside. Food came out fairly quick. The horchata tasted a bit watered down. The carne asada fries and had a good flavor and was tender but not a fan of the fries they used. The carnitas burrito tasted mostly like beans every bite. The ratio was off and had too much beans. Decent salsa here. Not a bad place to stop if you're around the area and is craving some Mexican food.

Yelp
Solid taqueria in Mammoth for Mexican food after a day on the slopes. Came here since it was a short walk from the supercharger. Really enjoyed the grilled flavor in the carne asada. I got the carne asada fries but thought that I would've enjoyed the nachos a bit better. The cheese wasn't really melted. I also got a carnitas burrito -- thought the flavor was good but a bit heavy on the beans. Carnitas flavor was delightful. Food comes out pretty fast and the staff is super nice! There are also a bunch of tables inside and they are pretty clean.

Yelp
Waited in line with NO ONE to greet you. Not an acknowledgment or anything, but I have the workers staring at you while they work. Would not recommend this place. Horrible service from the start.
google avatar

Denise A.

Yelp
Underrated restaurant in Mammoth! We got Al pastor breakfast burrito and Al pastor regular burrito. Lots of flavor and great condiments/salsa bar! This place needs more love. Kinda hot in the morning in mid June. Great service too!
google avatar

Kenneth M.

Yelp
Service was friendly by all staff members. Ordered a tripa taco and menudo bowl which comes with tortilla and a small drink. I don't order menudo too often but it was good but no oregano on the side. Tacos were big to the price matches. We had the carne asada fries and that was good. They are the FIRST place I've been to that uses the not-so-typical battered fries similar to Rally's which I thought was great. I wish more places did that. The self serve salsa bar was good (warning the red hot sauces have some heat to them if you're not used to it). Will come back if in town.

Jamison K.

Yelp
I live here in Mammoth. Went and got a California burrito, I got the eff wedo special. Old crusty fries and meat that was brought out from under the stove with a broom I could only guess. I was very respectful while ordering as I always am to avoid getting crappy food and service. Guess with this place it just took my skin color to get crap food and service. Avoid this place like the plague. Better food at Latin Market. Wwwwaaaayyyy better than anything coming out of this disgusting place.
google avatar

Kathleen R.

Yelp
Love the food! It's traditional cheesy greasy Mexican food. The birra tacos are so delicious as are the burritos. I love the new seating area inside. Togo or dine in it's worth the price.
google avatar

Kashaka K.

Yelp
Have you had the good fortune to enjoy a street taco in Tijuana Mexico. The perfect combination of charred carne asada, salt, warm corn tortilla, fresh onion and cilantro. It's a humbling experience. Or perhaps you've had a breakfast burrito, with crispy potatoes, farm fresh eggs and cheese. You wonder how could such a satisfying flavor come from tortillas, green salsa and common breakfast ingredients. It's surprisingly delicious. Well, Salsa Taqueria is not that. Although their salsa and pico are on par, their breakfast burrito is so lack luster it does not warrant a photo. Their hard shell chicken taco plate provided a key hole perspective into dry flavorless rice, boring refried beans and fall apart taco shells. But what they lack in flavor, they make up for in volume. If you want a lot of mediocre Mexican food at a high price point. This is the place for you. In their defense- The carne asada taco isn't bad. It's cilantro heavy. But not bad.
google avatar

Mia K.

Yelp
This place is so good! It definitely hit the spot and has a great menu selection. It has indoor and outdoor seating and you can't beat the view of the mountains in the background. In the same area, there is the Distant Brewery, if you want to stop by for a beer. I got the 3 enchilada combo plate with shredded chicken and my hubby got the meat combo plate. Both were bomb! Highly recommend. Also, I don't know if they moved but they have a ton of indoor seating (not like the past reviews stated, so I am assuming they moved or got more space).

Yelp
Salsa's Taqueria is a wonderful little gem of a Mexican restaurant in Mammoth Lakes! When I worked in Mammoth for a few years I'd dine regularly at Salsa's, usually two to three times a week! Wonderful staff, delicious food! Granted their dining area is tiny with something like five inside tables... but when it's warm outside, al fresco (outside) dining is available! Plus there's always takeout. I've tried many items off the menu: love their fish tacos! Plenty of other delicious goodies too like Carne Asada Fries, Quesadillas, Taquitos, etc. Salsa's Taqueria Mammoth Lakes menu here https://order.toasttab.com/online/salsastaqmmth

Yelp
Took a quick stop here with my buddy. The service was excellent and workers were very attentive. The food itself was amazing; good size burrito with nice selection of sauces. For the price, nothing can beat that. Definitely recommend
google avatar

Erina K.

Yelp
Delicious and quick. It's rare to have an entire family agree on good food and also have only a 10 min stop for lunch!
google avatar

Sue B.

Yelp
We love coming here! Food is great and the people are so nice! We come 2 to 3 times a week when we are in Mammoth. They have the best fried fish tacos ever! We also love their street tacos, cheek, tongue and chicken. We were surprised to find that they expanded this year and now have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. See you next year!
google avatar

Marcus K.

Yelp
This place is hit or miss most of the time. It's gone downhill and the prices continue to go up of course. Bland and poorly executed with really bad ingredients.
google avatar

Ching W.

Yelp
Our go to place for Mexican food in Mammoth. Awesome food and the people are nice and attentive. There are a lot of tables and seats.
google avatar

Christina M.

Yelp
Great food and service is quick. My family enjoyed their tacos and enchiladas so much, we went for breakfast burritos and coffee the next day. My one piece of feedback, is that it would be nice if they had a separate cook top for shellfish. Unfortunately I was unable to order anything due to a shellfish allergy, and everything being cooked on the same surface.
google avatar

Tiffany H.

Yelp
Wanted something quick to eat on our way out of town. Stopped here and got some tacos. There's a few tables for outdoor seating but no where to sit inside and eat. This is more of a order and takeout place. They had queso birria tacos on special so I decided to order that. There's lots of meat in the tacos and it comes with consume. They layer two tortillas together with cheese between them. It had good flavor and the meat was tender. My friend also ordered some street tacos with beef and he enjoyed them. It's an ok value for the price. The lady at the counter wasn't the friendliest person but I would return for the food.
google avatar

Hyun Y.

Yelp
I got my California burrito and as a San Diegan, I was a bit disappointed with California burrito. The meat was a bit tough and not quite satisfying. The service was okay. There was casual seating inside the restaurant. For the price, I almost paid $20 including tip, I was expecting a better quality burrito.
google avatar

Speedy G.

Yelp
Very good mexican food. Ambiance & customer service is average but the food is tasty!
google avatar

Ashley J.

Yelp
Food is okay. The veggie taco was okay and the carne asada nachos were good. Took a long time to get fast food style food. The service, however, was awful. I asked for horchata and the woman at the front told me to get my own ice then walked away and kept walking past me as I was waiting at the front for the horchata I'd paid for. When I got her attention and asked if I'm supposed to go around the counter myself, she told me she was "multitasking" after ignoring me and I told her I was multitasking, too, since I have a toddler and she's ignoring me. Ambience is very fast food- outside is okay, but inside during the summer is too hot. Don't expect to be treated like they appreciate your business- I would've left if we hadn't already bought food.
google avatar

Shannen M.

Yelp
I've been traveling this summer and just came back to Mammoth. The absolute best birria tacos. Hands down. Better than in Mexico! Best to call in & pick up your order, they do have tables, but you seat & serve yourself.
google avatar

Shelby W.

Yelp
Salsas is a must for our friend group every time we go to mammoth. If you are looking for a quick and easy take out option for your group, this is your place. By now we have tried a majority of the menu. The plates are huge and filling. The tacos are loaded up, and the flautas are excellent. My personal favorite is the breakfast burrito, which is loaded up with all the good stuff. They also have a full serve yourself salsa bar, where you can load up on all the different salsas that you want. They have a ton of options, which is great to have the variety!

Cambria A.

Yelp
Rolled tacos were not very good. Al pastor quesadilla was fine. Bean and cheese burrito was delicious. Beans and rice were really good. Paid $3.50 for a 2oz container of sour cream. Not great but not bad
google avatar

Katsia M.

Yelp
We travel a lot and it's hard to find great Mexican food. This is the place! Absolutely delicious and authentic Mexican cuisine.
google avatar

Trevor C.

Yelp
Best tacos in mammoth don't listen to these Karen's hating who never had a real taco in their lives.
google avatar

Cristina A.

Yelp
Came to this spot because of the good reviews and boy was I disappointed. This place isn't clean at all. It took over 30 minutes to get our food and the chicken taquitos are a joke. They looked like skinny mozzarella sticks. The customer service was horrible. The cashier was rude and unfriendly. My family also got food poisoning after eating here. They had carne asada, lengua and cabeza tacos. Don't bother stopping by this place. It's pretty disgusting along with crappy customer service. We will not be returning.
google avatar

Zack E.

Yelp
Hands down the best Mexican food I've had in Mammoth. Really enjoyed the California burrito and the big plate of nachos. Salsa bar was on point too.
google avatar

Henry S.

Yelp
Service- the worst ever; waited over an hour for a quesadilla; honest, not exaggerating. The guy who took the order was really nice. But the only young woman working there has no customer service skills or just doesn't care. She runs around looking busy; shouts out some order numbers, not all as they come so many customers end up, waiting to pick up their order while it's ready behind the counter. She never has an answer for anybody's questions Behind the counter area is quite unclean; the cooking area is covered in pieces of meat all over the place. Would strongly not recommend this place if you don't eat meat. As the woman was pretending to clean the area around, I noticed that she was sticking her hand in the juice dispensers; same hands that she was picking up and carrying plates of food with; and she was using a rag to wipe down the salsa bar; all without gloves or washing her hands. Food- below average in taste Ambience- disgusting, unhygienic.

Michael Q.

Yelp
They don't cook the meat right, it has a weird taste to it and an even worse after taste. It doesn't look right, looks boiled
google avatar

Salvador M.

Yelp
We were looking for something quick to eat, we came across Salsa's Taqueria. Tacos were great, ceviche needed just a little more flavor. The place is nice and clean. Good staff as well. Don't forget the Salsas, the salsas are really really good.
google avatar

Cindy L.

Yelp
We stopped by for quick lunch. Great food. Friendly service. Outdoor seating allowed us to eat with our dog.
google avatar

Linda Y.

Yelp
First time here, I ordered the fish taco special and hubby ordered two taco plate. Both dishes were plentiful. You order at the counter and they bring it out to you. Nice casual place. The tacos were good, the d like to try taquitos next time.
google avatar

Nathan L.

Yelp
Food was mostly really good! Their street tacos are surprisingly tender and tasty, maybe needs a dash of flavor more but it was still a really good lengua taco. I also got the birria and that was AMAZING. Great flavor, tender, excellent My friend got the fish tacos and said they were really flavorful and had a crunchiness to it and had a pretty nice size I was a little disappointed in the ceviche tostada, pretty small and just overall kinda average and would not order that again Would definitely come back and try their other street tacos

Yelp
We came here for lunch and our bellies were so happy!!!! And then we went home to take a nap and chill and then we were deciding later where to go to dinner and were looking and looking online and WE DECIDED TO COME BACK FOR DINNER!! LOL! It was just so delicious!! I recommend the birria tacos, surf and turf burrito, and California burrito. You get a lot of food which is a big plus to me and it's delicious! Also, the salsas are spicy and mouth-watering good. GREAT place to take a group (like I'm talking 12 people if you need) or just go with a small pack of 4. The workers are friendly and helpful. It's authentic Mexican food :) Would come here again! wait but already did that ... so I guess we will go again again next time we are in town!
google avatar

Yesenia D.

Yelp
Food is authentic and muy deliciosa! We were in Mammoth for two nights and went to have dinner there each night. To be fair, I haven't eaten at other Mexican restaurants in Mammoth, but I don't need to look any further. Salsa's it is!
google avatar

Gideon H.

Yelp
The lady at the counter was so unfriendly.. not coming back and I do. It recommend others to deal with her rudeness. Too bad. Food was overpriced and not that could. $25 for an appetizer taquitos and chips and guac. WTH
google avatar

Barbara S.

Yelp
They used to be so good, but the last few times we've gone there, the food wasn't very good and their prices are now as high as a sit down restaurant. They were better when it was a hole in the wall restaurant. Also, if you have a cold and work in a restaurant, stay home or at least wear a mask. The girl taking orders and bringing the food to us coughed the whole time we were in there.
google avatar

Mark G.

Yelp
Knowone was rude to me at the register. I ordered their nachos with al pastor. I sat outside. It was a beautiful day so I wanted a mountain view while I ate my nachos. The lady at the register brought my nachos out to my table. This was a large order and got me really full. I had hiked over 10 1/2 miles and I was hungry. The al pastor meat was extremely tender with a hint of smoke and their beans were excellent. I will definitely be returning when I return to Mammoth Lakes.
google avatar

Phil D.

Yelp
This is a small place with only outdoor seating but the food is excellent. My wife and I have eaten there many times and done take away. Today we had a brunch there and had their breakfast burritos. We both felt they were the best breakfast burritos we'd ever had. And they are nice people with fast service. Happy to give them 5 stars.
google avatar

Glenn W.

Yelp
Had dinner there last night. My friend and I expecting the usually good meal we have when we are up here skiing. Was really disappointed. First off it seemed the staff were bothered by the fact we came in for dinner. Second off the food was terrible. The beans were cold and the rice was way undercooked.

Kevin G.

Yelp
Good food, fast service and fair pricing. Just what you want for takeout. Perfect for nights that you just don't want to cook.

Raquel R.

Yelp
Really good food. I had the green asada burrito, Very flavorful and delicious. They also have the best micheladas!!! It's definitely the best food in town. Good prices and portions.
google avatar

Sue D.

Yelp
Great food! We had the 2-taco plate with one chicken and one beef, guacamole and rice and beans. The tortillas were delicioso! Everything really hit the spot after a gorgeous, tiring day skiing on the mountain. Easy to get to as well. There is limited parking on the side. Recommend!

Becky A.

Yelp
We had takeout and ordered the Taco Salad with shredded beef which is akin to a tostada .. it was delicious. Was priced very affordably and good portion size.. be sure to grab some extra salsas. Will order this again!
google avatar

Kaitlyn S.

Yelp
I eat here way too much. My favorite meals are the quesa birria tacos- you HAVE to try them, and the shrimp ceviche tostada (I usually swap the tostada for just tortilla chips. And the horchata is so so so good!!! I recommend to anything that is needing a quick, cheap meal.
google avatar

Chelsey Y.

Yelp
If you're coming back from a hike, this place is perfect for a post-workout meal! We were all starving and this place hit the spot. We ordered regular burritos with shrimp, fish, buche, and cabeza. The shrimp was by far the best burrito so if you do choose to eat here, that burrito is a must! TIP: the red sauce is SO GOOD! so spicy but oh soooo good.
google avatar

Danielle A.

Yelp
I can't believe we've never been here before! This place is bomb! Easy ordering at the window, great selection and plenty of seating. The portions are big and the salsa bar is legit. All combo meals come with a fountain drink, beans and rice! The flavor of the food is fantastic! Can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Hannah P.

Yelp
The food is so good, the menu extensive, decorated very cute, and always satisfying. The women at the counter never seem very friendly, but as a local in a customer facing position, I can understand that it's taxing sometimes to deal with guests. Really hope they start to like me soon, though, cause the lengua tacos and shrimp ceviche are addicting and it's hard not to make it a regular habit to eat here!
