Yelp
My friends and I were in Missouri for a few days so we only had enough time to try out one BBQ spot. Since Salt + Smoke had the most number of reviews on Yelp and was close to where we were staying, we decided to check it out for dinner. As a party of 4, we were seated right away without a reservation.
Overall, the food was somewhat below average and the service was noticeably sub-par.
The full rack of St. Louis cut ribs we ordered were fall off the bone, but ate dry, similar to the texture you get when you think of dried, packaged jerky. You absolutely need to smother them in sauce in order to fully enjoy them. Of the four sauces available, my favorite one was the sweet heat followed by the mustard based sauce. Like the ribs, the pulled pork and pulled chicken were also dry. The brisket was far too lean. I see some folks mentioning in their review that you are able to request a fattier cut, but this option wasn't even presented to us, neither on the menu, or by our server.
The meat combo plates come with an impressive looking popover, but this item seemed to be universally hated by diners. If you look around the restaurant, most diners didn't even touch theirs.
With my platter, I got the coleslaw and the white cheddar cracker mac. The noodles for the mac was overcooked and the coleslaw was nothing special.
Regarding the service, the server who was taking our orders looked very annoyed that we were not ready to order our drinks 15 seconds after we had sat down. Furthermore, when we pointed out that our order was incorrect -- that we were served pulled pork instead of pulled chicken for one of the meat platters, our server gave us an dead-pan, accusatory glare. When the right protein was finally brought over, our server was very snarky when the chicken was handed over to us, almost hinting that we were intentionally trying to take advantage of the situation that we had no control over. So confused!
I deeply regret coming to Salt + Smoke over Pappy's Smokehouse or Stellar Hog.
