Whenever I'm in the area for lunch or dinner with friends, I always suggest coming here for dessert afterwards.
Salt and straw is consistently good. Their ice cream is smooth and they always have a wide array of flavors including those with generous amounts of dessert (e.g. brownie, cookie dough) mixed in. I love being welcomed in by the sweet aroma of cooking waffles, and I appreciate being able to sample the flavors so I know I'll like my final pick. They have their solid classics (my friends' favorites are the sea salt + caramel or chocolate gooey brownie) and I'm always curious to try their seasonal flavors.
For this month of October I chose to sample a few quite interesting ones:
The great candycopia: was definitely reminiscent of all of my favorite chocolate bars: kit-kat, snickers, reeses, heath--good, tempting to get, but a little too sweet for me personally
Don Bugito's Creepy Crawly Critters: Not a flavor of choice for everyone because the ingredients include insects in the sweet green matcha ice cream. As someone who's tried bugs once at a festival, I think this version of bug-infused food was actually not as scary since it was hard to see or feel the resemblance of bugs. The ice cream had crunchy bits but I couldn't sense the texture of worm or cricket, and I overall could just feel/taste the coconut. What a novel flavor, and I commend Salt&Straw for putting it on their menu. I liked it, but didn't end up getting it because it wasn't my favorite of the samples.
My favorite this time of their seasonal menu was their Jack o'lantern pumpkin bread. As a lover of pumpkin-flavored things and cheese, this was a solid winner with the chunks of pumpkin bread mixed in with cream cheese frosting. I was still pretty full from lunch, so I like that I got to choose a kids scoop. On other days though, I enjoy getting the split scoop so I can eat more than one flavor.
The staff are always welcoming and they know their flavors well. No seating inside the shop, but there's benches outside. Parking isn't free unfortunately, but available as street parking or in the coco walk garage. Great surrounding area to walk around though when the weather is good.
Thank you Salt & Straw for being one of my favorite dessert stops and satifying that sweet craving. I'll definitely be back.
