Salt & Straw Ice Cream Is Expanding to Westfield UTC - Eater San Diego

"Portland’s acclaimed Salt & Straw Ice Cream, which landed its first San Diego scoop shop in Little Italy back in 2017 — the company’s most successful opening at the time — is heading to Westfield UTC. A rep for the company tells Eater that the store will be located at the north end of the mall across the parking from Crate & Barrel, facing La Jolla Village Drive. The UTC outpost is expected to be up and running by May 2023. Founded by cousins Kim and Tyler Malek, the 'farm-to-cone' brand, which also operates a location at One Paseo, often partners with small purveyors to create the menus for the ice cream parlors, which include classics like sea salt caramel ribbons and chocolate gooey brownie along with vegan options and seasonal flavors that rotate monthly. Though it couldn’t confirm any other shops in San Diego at the moment, Salt & Straw said it’s always looking for other areas that would be a good fit for the company." - Candice Woo

Salt Straw has the BEST staff! They're incredibly friendly and genuinely excited to help you find your perfect flavor. The best part? They offer so many generous samples– seriously, they'll keep letting you taste test until you're absolutely sure. Such a fun and welcoming way to discover your new favorite ice cream! Highly recommend for the amazing service alone.

Love their seasonal rotation. My favorite ice cream place. Their September apple cider donut flavor and the march (I think) banana parsnip are my favorites. Pear and blue cheese & strawberry balsamic are up there as well.

Good unique ice cream with bizarre flavors you won’t find anywhere else. Enjoyed the mint chocolate chip. Lots of free samples so the line might move very slowly.

Google
Really great ice cream at Salt & Straw! We ordered two waffle cones with chocolate gooey brownie, salted malted chocolate chip cookie dough, and strawberry coconut water sherbet. The flavors all tasted great, definitely one of my new favorite ice cream spots. We also ordered a pup cup. Very friendly and quick service. Highly recommend!

Google
This place has soo many innovative flavours and a wide selection! For me personally chocolate ice cream needs to taste chocolaty or just a nice flavour I guess! Ice cream: Got chocolate goeey fudgy brownie and hazelnut chocolate with cookies & cream (vegan). We tasted quite a few and nothing seemed stood out! The goeey brownie had great brownie but overall flavour was lacking! The hazelnut in the other was rancid and it wasn’t pleasant to have! I told the team and they were very understanding and more than happy to help with another scoop but there wasn’t a flavour I wanted to have! The waffle cone was too thick and sugary hence we literally had to throw it. Service : Super understanding, helpful and sweet team! They helped with tasting almost 8-10 flavours and they gave great feedback too Atmosphere: Nice place to hangout and have an ice cream if you like a flavour!

Didn’t really know what to get so I asked suggestion from the workers and went for their suggestion of salted caramel. There were lots of flavors to choose from with some intriguing and unique combinations. I didnt know nor I was offered to taste a sample of their flavors which could have made this experience better as I couldve chosen a different one aside from the typical caramel.

I can't tell you more than what has already been written. Well crafted ice-cream, amazing flavors.

We stopped by Salt & Straw at their La Jolla location inside UTC, and we got our craving satisfied. Salt & Straw's rich history, beginning as a food cart in the vibrant Alberta Arts District of Portland, adds a unique charm to their brand. Since then, they've expanded to several locations in Portland and offer nationwide home delivery. What truly sets Salt & Straw apart is their commitment to crafting ice cream the old-fashioned way, in small batches, just as it was done in the past with rock salt and straw for insulation. This dedication to tradition shines through in their ice cream. During my visit, the line was pleasantly short, and the service was excellent. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable about their offerings, which made the ordering process a breeze. As for the ice cream itself, I tried the chocolate mint chip, and it was nothing short of amazing. The flavors were rich and authentic, and the texture was perfectly creamy. Each bite was a delicious journey into ice cream perfection. Overall, Salt & Straw's La Jolla location inside UTC is a must-visit for ice cream enthusiasts. Their commitment to quality, along with a touch of nostalgia, makes it a top-notch choice for a sweet treat. I look forward to returning to explore more of their unique flavors.

Yelp
5 BIG STARS!! I had an AMAZING experience at this location. I believe the young lady's name was Zoey? She was so diligent about my allergies to dairy as I toot if ingested. Thanks to her I enjoyed my ice cream, tootless ! Will be back for sure xo

Yelp
I've always loved Salt & Straw ever since I had them for the first time in Oregon. This review is specifically to especially acknowledge Aliyah (not sure if I spelled her name correctly) who just was such a lovely employee. We had a whole conversation about her dog tattoo and she ended up getting my ice cream for me AND a pup ice cream for my dog. Forever my favorite location. I has the coffee and love nuts as a split scoop with cinnamon snickerdoodle in the salted caramel waffle cone...DELICIOUS

Yelp
Salt and Straw is always such a crowd pleaser. Everyone that I've brought here has always raved about the ice cream and the service. I appreciate how the workers never make the experience feel rushed, no matter how many people are in the line. They provide service with a smile every time. They encourage samples, and I love how delicious all of their flavors are. They have classic flavors, which stay on the menu year round. My all time favorite flavor is the Honey Lavender. Some places make it taste too floral, but this one is perfectly balanced with the honey. If I'm sharing, I often get a double scoop ($8.50) of Honey Lavender and Sea Salt w/ Caramel Ribbons. Additionally, Salt and Straw has limited edition flavors, which rotate out usually monthly. One of my favorite limited edition flavors is the Jasmine Milk Tea Almond Stracciatella, which is part of the Spring Flower Series. On Friday, I went to try out the Chocolatiers Series, which is the February limited edition menu. I got a single scoop ($6.50) of the Chocolate Almond Gold Bar which had almond chocolate bars, caramel, chocolate stracciatella, and salted vanilla ice cream. I highly encourage you to check out Salt and Straw the next time that you have an ice cream craving!

Yelp
A single scoop is really all you need. The ice cream is very rich, but honestly a bit too rich for my liking. Very creamy and thick. Honestly I believe it's a personal preference but I don't like my ice cream this rich. First bite is really good but the more you eat the more the flavor gets tiring. I went late at night so they only had 1-2 people serving. They give out samples for any flavors you want to try. The line moves fairly fast but sometimes big groups come in and it takes a while. There's not really anywhere to sit and eat your ice cream. The store is small in size but they have stand up tables. Overall, Salt and Straw was alright. If you enjoy extremely rich and creamy ice cream this is the place for you.

Yelp
I love salt and straw for their quality ice cream and innovative flavors. This time I stopped by late at night and there was ample parking and the service was very friendly. The newest and recommended flavor was strawberry balsamic and it was absolutely a winner. Paired with the Arbequina olive oil, which our helpful server described as a creamy vanilla, I have to say this was one of the best split scoops pairings ever. The strawberry is so tart and juicy and a bit of a flavor blast. Arbequina olive oil is aromatic and simple in contrast. I honestly can't wait to have it again. Coming here is so much better when you don't have to wait in the cold like the downtown location and it's got the same charm and nice decor.

Yelp
I love salt and straw!!! I always go when I get a chance. So many flavors to choose from and seasonal flavors as well. I always get the pear and brie cheese. This time I got salted malted cookie dough with my pear and brie cheese. Excellent flavors and they balance each other. You can always ask for samples before you choose your final picks! They can also split scoop, so you get 2 flavors for only .50 more!

Yelp
Started my New Year's Day with a delightful mix of sugar and salt at Salt & Straw! They still had some holiday flavors on the menu, and I tried the Almond with Salted Ganache along with their classic Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons. Both were delicious and perfectly balanced in sweetness. Considering it was New Year's Day, I was expecting a crowd, but it wasn't busy at all. The staff was super helpful, letting us sample multiple flavors before I settled on my two choices. I also tried their cone, which stood out--it wasn't overly sweet like most places and paired beautifully with the ice cream's flavors. Overall, a great experience to kick off the year. Docking one star only because the flavor variety felt slightly limited compared to previous visits. Still, I'd definitely come back!

Yelp
Ice cream chain Salt & Straw is once again pushing creativity and quality in September's limited edition apple series. AMBIANCE Sophisticated candy store feels SERVICE Free tastings are amazing. Yelp
I love the ice cream here, especially the seasonal flavors. It's great to be able to sample them before ordering. This is a perfect spot for a post-shopping or post-dinner treat at UTC Mall.

Yelp
Our family has this tradition where we go for a sweet treat (typically ice cream) on the last day of summer break. Our kids look forward to this every year. This time we decided to try Salt and Straw and walk around the mall. I did try the cinnamon & honey fried chicken...while initially good it had a weird after taste. My son actually ordered the sour cherry pie and I thought that was yummy. I went with the vegan option, to forgo the tummy ache after, and was pleasantly surprised. The base isn't creamy like ice cream but was close, it has more of an icy texture. I thought it was pretty great and have recommended it to other friends who haven't tried their vegan options. I'm not a huge fan of all of their seasonal flavors but do admire their creativity. I think my favorite over the years have been the pumpkin around Halloween and the sweet potato pie around Thanksgiving. I could be wrong but I think those may have been vegan options as well. My sister has also gotten a Teremana one around Christmas that was devoured by all. Definitely looking forward to my next trip to Salt & Straw!

Yelp
Salt and Straw stands on its own when it compared to other ice cream places. They are generous with samples so you can figure out which flavor of choice you would like. I love the unique flavors that are paired together. You feel welcome once you step inside from usually waiting in a semi long line. I observed the staff works great as a team. Kylie took care of me and she was very kind and thoughtful. I appreciate it. Of course my overall experience was awesome! Thank you!!!

Yelp
I LOVE SALT & STRAW : D I'm SO HAPPY they opened up a location in this area. I've been enjoying this ice cream in SD for many years at all of their other locations, and this location is just as great as the others. Their seasonal offerings are always worth getting. The staff encourage you to try all of their flavors (plus that they use metal spoons to reduce waste). It's awesome that you can get a split scoop so you can try more than one flavor at a time. Sure, it's a little pricey for ice cream, but you can taste the tender care and passion they put into making each batch. Parking can be....... a mission at UTC.... But it's worth it! This particular location is situated near a bunch of other new and trendy/foodie places that are new to the mall. 5/5! No complaints. I feel like a little kid eating ice cream every time I stop by ~

Yelp
Came on a weekday with my cousin and it wasn't too packed! Workers were kind, but still the issue of the worker not putting the effort to hand the spoon over the glass. It was a stretch!! We sampled: - Lemon Marigold Amaro Marshmellow Sherbet: This was an odd mixture. Lemon-- but it was very sweet not sour. And the marshmellow was very soft. We didn't enjoy this. We ordered: - Strawberry & Coconut Water Sherbet: a nice fresh taste of fruit. They both were refreshing, smooth, and even creamy! A nice balance of the two. - Pistachio with Saffron Cake & Rose Water: The rose water was very light which I'm so glad for. The pistachio stood out well in flavor and paired really well with the saffron cake. The only thing I have to say about the cake is that it was VERY dry, not very spongy or moist -- even with the ice cream. Great flavor cake, just not texture. I wish there were come crushed pistachio swirled in this flavor. It would take the ice cream up another level! I recommend this flavor! They have little dead fruit flies in the windowsills which isn't the most appealing. We ate outside. They have napkins available for you and they accept cash! A good spot for ice cream, last month was a miss. But this month flavors are tasty! Recommend trying the other flavors as they do sound lovely.

Yelp
I'm a fan of Salt & Straw. There are a handful of great options on their permanent menu (my favorite being the honey lavender), and I especially love that they're always rotating a seasonal menu. This time around, the theme was apple cider. My husband had a blackcurrant apple cider ice cream, and it had chunks of jelly in it which made it more unique and gave it extra texture. The seasonal flavors are always innovative and they offer samples.

Yelp
Nice that Salt & Straw is has a UTC location now. It's on the exterior of the mall, so u can park, get ice cream and leave. The wait wasn't that long, but the line moves kinda slow. Probably because people sample all the flavors - which I don't mind. We gotta get what we like, right? The inside is kinda small and not much room to enjoy the ice cream. We wanted to try the seasonal flavor: apple pie vs pumpkin pie. But they're out of it right now, which was a big bummer. Tried a few flavors, and went with the classic honey lavender. And we also got the Pear and Bleu Cheese, which was surprisingly great! Not a huge fan of bleu cheese straight up, but this ice cream is amazing. Even has bits of pear in it. Give it a try on your next visit!
google avatar

Yelp
Cute little ice cream store at UTC. They have unique flavors of ice cream. I got the berries one and it was yummy and not too sweet, which I loved. This is a must try if you are in the UTC area. The servers were great too. You can try the flavors first so you can choose what you like the best. Line moves pretty fast when we were there but I'm sure they can get busy there too.
google avatar

Shirley S.

Yelp
Second time here and sticked with what I love the first time I came #SeaSaltWithCaramelRibbons. So yummy I don't know if I would try anything else. Maybe next time I will try adding a scoop of a new flavor but one was plenty. I will need to forgo lunch!

Maria K.

Yelp
SO SO GOOD got their pumpkin bread flavor and was so fresh and tasty!!! Recommend for sure

Yelp
Inside is clean, and there is a good selection of flavors. Staff was friendly and offered lots of taster samples. There is seating inside and outside, restrooms also available inside. Parking garage is close by. We got the freckled mint chip and my daughter got the birthday cake with blackberries. Both were super yummy, perfect sweet treat after lunch. My husband got the salted malted chocolate chip cookie dough, wasn't my favorite as it was too salty for my taste. Overall good options for every taste preference.

Yelp
I have been wanting to come here since I first moved to SD years ago, but the line was always insanely long. This is their newest location, and since the line wasn't terrible, I finally got to stop by and try it. It's a pretty small (but cute) shop, so we even with a shorter line, I still had to wait outside for part of it. The workers were very nice and were speedy with people's requests. I tried a bunch of their flavors before settling on a scoop of the Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons. I really liked how there was a clear separation in flavor between the sea salt and caramel instead of it being more blended. I thought it gave it a more unique flavor than the common sea salt caramel. With how much people rave about this place and the ice cream, I was definitely expecting more. I'm giving it 3.5/5 stars, which I will round up to 4. They definitely try very hard to have unique flavors, but that doesn't always work out in their favor in my opinion. Still very good and I would love to come back when they change up their flavors again.
google avatar

Stacie L.

Yelp
Always a super long line because the ice cream is out of this world. The line moved quick tho. Very busy place and nicely decorated. Very comfortable. Are all our ice cream before we took photos...sorry...it was really hot out! ;-) but ice never met an ice cream flavor I didn't like here
google avatar

Vin S.

Yelp
This place has some crazy flavors. The prices are pretty high but it's ice cream, so there you go. Everybody is going to give it five stars. It's a lot easier for an ice cream parlor to get five stars than it is for a dentist. Lol I don't do dairy, so ordering a frozen treat can sometimes be a challenge. At least Salt and Straw makes a good effort and the last time I visited this particular location they offered two delicious dairy-free delights. I'm a fan, what can I say! Five stars for nice ice cream, nice people, and a comfy ambiance.
google avatar

Sophia L.

Yelp
Fantastic flavors that you usually don't find elsewhere. We usually come for the milkshake -- two scoops of vanilla and one of coffee -- and that's a 5/5, but we got just one scoop of ice cream this time. I saw that they came out with their limited cereal flavors and tried the cocca puff one. Fell in love immediately and that's the one I chose to go with. The cup that I went out with was a little different though. In store, when they give you a good balance of coffee and chocolate bits, but in the scoop, 70-80% was just cocca puff crumbs and that was very sweet. It almost put me in a coma. Nonetheless, I would always come back to try more. Staff is also super friendly, one of them was super passionate and had literally the brightest smile.
google avatar

Yelp
Me and my wife's favorite place to get ice cream. Service has always been great, the ice cream tastes great. They have a great selection of flavors and even change it up to have some crazy flavors as well! Like today they let us try the flavors and there was one called Creepy Crawlers and apparently it has actual bugs in it talk about crazy flavors haha. But don't worry! They have regular flavors as well so you don't have to try their experimental flavors the ice cream is a good price for a single scoop and I'd say a single scoop is a good size for anyone. I'd recommend this place for sure. We've come here MULTIPLE times and even go out of our way for it just because my wife loves it haha so that says how much we'd recommend it to others haha

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't written a review for Salt & Straw yet! I LOVEEE salt and straw, i literally always have 2 pints of my favorite flavors in my freezer at all times. My favorites are the sea salt with caramel and the chocolate gooey brownie. The sea salt with caramel ribbons is a creamy vanilla base with caramel swirls in it, they are not stingy with the caramel at all and the salt really balances out the sweetness in the ice cream! It's also not overly sweet. I wasn't a chocolate ice cream girl before the chocolate gooey brownie, but it really converted me LOL. Not too sweet or overly chocolatey, with brownie pieces in it (my fave!). Absolutely delicious. I do also like to stop by and get their single scoops once in a while, depending on my mood. They have seasonal flavors as well as their classics which are always there. Love love love salt & straw. Super friendly staff.

Yelp
Salt and straw is my favorite ice cream place ever! Their chocolate brownie is really good. I love sampling all the unique flavors they have to offer! The coffee and love nuts was great too! Great service and great ice cream!

Yelp
Yes! Another S&S has opened and of course they had to do it at UTC. The location was bonkers when they first opened as everyone wanted to take advantage of the free scoop offer. We tried twice to go but the line was defeating. I recently re visited and got super lucky as it wasn't too busy. The server was super cool and let us sample quite a few ice creams. My uncle is from Asia so he's never seen these unique ingredients in ice cream. He sampled a few flavors and later told me it was the worst ice cream he's ever tried as who mixes salty with sweet in ice cream :) It's funny to me to see how different cultures eat and see ice cream now. We settled on the coffee &love nuts ice cream as it was the simplest flavor we agreed to share. We also got the waffle cone. I think it was about $10 after tip and tax. The portion was a nice size to share while walking around the mall afterwards. I don't doubt this location will do well. It's a great addition to this mall.
google avatar

Marleen R.

Yelp
Place is small and clean and well organized, plenty of happy workers behind the counters waiting to gladly give you a sample spoon of whatever' you wish to taste. They have seasonal flavors which is great, they also offer sorbets. Servings are generous and this great tasting ice cream is definitely worth every cent.
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Just like the locations in Los Angeles, Salt & Straw in La Jolla is selling super delicious and addictive small batch ice cream. Kudos to them for always being generous with samples and also for using metal tasting spoons that are reusable. For my last meal on Earth, 10 gallons of the Seasalt Caramel Ribbons ice cream from Salt & Straw will be on that menu.
google avatar

Audrey C.

Yelp
So glad they opened a location at UTC! They're located next to Sweetgreen on the newer side of the mall, by Crate & Barrel. Staff here are super nice and friendly! Love that they don't seem to judge people for wanting you try several samples. Lol The store was clean and there's standing area inside to eat your ice cream or two benches outside. The ice cream is consistently creamy and fresh with no ice crystals. I love the smell of the waffle cones being made. They're always so fresh.

Yelp
Salt and Straw is a pretty good ice cream place, known for their honey lavender ice cream and edible perfume. They recently opened a branch at the UTC Westfield, and had a promotion with buy one get one scoop free. I haven't been to Salt and Straw in five years so I was excited to check out their flavors. Ultimately while they have a good mix of creative and classic flavors, I don't think they are to my taste. This Salt and Straw is rather small, so there is a large line that forms outside. It doesn't move very fast but it's pretty constantly moving. Once you're inside, you are hit with the scent of freshly made waffle cone. There is a wall with their merchandise including hats, a cookbook, and candles. The inside is clean and cute. The edible perfume is for sale too! Once I got to the front, I tried several of their flavors. The worker helping me was really nice and patient, and offered suggestions based on my preferences to help me choose. I ended up getting a scoop of coffee love nuts and a scoop of the olive oil flavor. I had tried the strawberry balsamic flavor but I wasn't a fan. The coffee had crunchy, chocolate-covered morsels scattered throughout that were super satisfying. The coffee taste was quite strong, and even a little bitter. The olive oil flavor was really interesting. It didn't have a strong flavor but rather a more subtle, floral oily taste that complimented the creamy base. Ultimately, these flavors were cool but not my favorite. Ice cream is something I'm ok with getting at the grocery store, so at $6+ for a scoop, I likely won't come back unless they release a cool monthly flavor.

Yelp
Salt & Straw is my favorite so I was stoked to have this new location so close to home. Everything tasted great. Very creamy, no ice crystals, and all the flavors were delicious, especially my faves (honey lavender and sea salt caramel). Everyone was nice and friendly. This location is right next to Sweet Greens so on the outer skirt of UTC making it very easy to park and skip right in. I had to dock 1 star because I've been here twice since it's opened and the scoops are hella small. I'm used to S&S giving very generous scoops that leave me so satisfied, especially at the One Paseo location. The split scoop costs $6.50 so it hurts when it's itty bitty.
google avatar

Yelp
Promo thru Jun 18: buy 1 get 1 scoop free I've tried Salt & Straw in the past and wasn't impressed by the flavors. Decided to give it another try since this new location was convenient and had a BOGO deal. Service: A++ very friendly staff, can sample as many flavors you want, line moved quickly. Parking: first 2 hours free at UTC mall Quality: can definitely taste the high quality ingredients in this ice cream. Texture is very smooth and creamy Price: on the pricy side at $6 for 1 scoop and $9 for 2. Scoop size is average. Flavors: I was not wowed by any of the flavors. There were some interesting ones, but none tasty enough to spend $6 or eat a whole scoops worth. My husband & I had a difficult time choosing which flavors to purchase. His favorites cookies n cream, and mint chocolate were not available. I tend to go for strawberries n cream, caramel, or nutty flavors and none of those were available. Sea salt with caramel - was hoping to like this, but it is way too salty Lemon curd & whey - okay Cacao pulp & chocolate gelato - strange tangy tartness in it that was unexpected Double fold vanilla - doesn't taste much different from any other vanilla ice cream Chocolate gooey brownie - solid choice, not too sweet and has soft brownie chunks throughout Cinnamon snickerdoodle - okay Honey lavender - lavender flavor very faint. Lavender is definitely an acquired taste Salted malted chocolate chip - okay, imagine a Whopper candy

Yelp
Came here on a Friday after an appointment to kill some time for traffic to die down. The last time I was at UTC it wasn't open so I was happy to see it was open on this trip. The store is small. The line was wrapped in the store and going outside but it literally only takes a few people for this to happen. The staff were friendly and offered samples. I love that they have mini metal spoons and when you are done you drop it down into the slots on the bottom front of the counter. I appreciated that even though they were busy they met my 7 year old have a few samples. The inside is dark wood and red. It is like if a speak easy and an old school ice cream parlor had a baby vibe to me. I got the day old bread pudding with chocolate ganache in a cup, my husband got the chocolate gooey brownie and my 7 year old got the sea salt with caramel ribbons. I got a regular scoop and my husband got the kid's scoop in a cup and 7 year old got kid's scoop in a cone. For all 3 items it was $16. This is delicious, decadent ice cream. It tastes just like the name of the ice cream and you can tell they use quality ingredients. No ice chips in this ice cream! It is smooth and creamy. The only reason I couldn't give 5 stars is the price! I will definitely be back to try new flavors when in the area.

Yelp
Is a review even needed for this place? Great ice cream! Unique flavors! Great service that provides generous samples. No seating but plenty of places to sit in the mall! Pro tip: for any of your ice cream orders, always ask for the free regular cone to go with your scoop of ice cream in a cup. Its free! Why not?

Yelp
I was excited to hear that a new Salt & Straw branch opened in UTC La Jolla! The server was patient and allowed me to try all of the flavors that I was interested in. I tried the chocolate gooey brownie, which seemed pretty basic for $6/scoop. Sea salt with caramel ribbons was too salty for me, and I wasn't a fan of the strawberry honey balsamic with black pepper. Ultimately my partner and I ordered the honey lavender and the salted, malted chocolate chip cookie dough. The shop is small and the line quickly piles outside of the door. Anticipate sitting outside somewhere in UTC's mall, as there is very limited seating immediately outside of the shop.

Yelp
One of my favorite placed to get ice cream. There flavors are tasty and unique. I love thiere sea salt and caramel, coffee and love, and the peanut butter ribbon. Their ice cream is very tasty and high quality, and the best part is that its always contains chunks or sauce so you do not need sauce or any topping with it I love to try their monthly flavors as they are so delicious too! The people who works there are nice. And you can get as many samples as you want. Highly recommend this place to everyone!! I wish they open a store in Washington DC as I am moving there soon!

Yelp
Salt and Straw's long awaited UTC arrival has finally come. In standard fashion, the staff was friendly and the interior is clean and cute, with the pints to go on the right (tip: if you want a pint, you get to skip the line!). The line was of course out the door...at 9pm on a Friday, it took us roughly 30 minutes to get to the front. They were generous in giving us as many tastings as we wanted, and we ended up with two generously packed double scoop cones. The cones are worth getting! Pros: generous scoops, guilt free tasting, cute interior Cons: price is steep, wait times are a commitment, and base flavors are mediocre. So, salt and straw's schtick has always been unique flavors, and while the unique flavors were tasty, they felt a bit strong on the spice and a bit bland on the base. Their plain old vanilla ice cream was a disappointment-- pretty flavorless honestly, and for for me, you have to get the basics right. The novelty of unique flavors has worn off for us, especially given how long you have to wait. This might be our last Salt and Straw experience unless there's some unique special that we just have to try.

Yelp
Another great location for Salt and Straw located in the UTC Mall on the new side near Corner Bakery! Location is very easy to get to for parking since this side of the mall isn't fully developed yet but perhaps could be an issue in the future once more things start opening up. The interior is on the smaller side so not much room for seating but there is a standing table to eat at as well as a few benches outside. Since this location is so close to me I've been to it on a couple occasion and tried out their new limited editions flavors they have for the month. Not the biggest fan of them but they are upcycled ingredients which I think is pretty dope but they won't be around forever. I ordered the Day Old Bread Pudding flavor which in my opinion is one of the better choices to choose from of the Limited for this month. People are starting to find out that it opened up so wait times are going to get longer and longer so be prepared for a good wait as people try out every single possible sample. Pro-tip: Make sure to not linger around the mall for longer than 2 hours or you'll have to pay the $2 parking charge.

Yelp
Getting the flight ($16) was perfect since there was 4 of us. Each is a kid-sized scoop, which is enough for us. Similar to Wanderlust Creamery, you can ask to test out the flavors before deciding. The almond brittle salted ganache and coffee & lovenuts were the best out of the 4 we got. Service was quick and nice. Unfortunately, there was a short, thick black hair in the honey lavender ice cream near the bottom... it looked really gross. Aside from that, everything else was fine.

Yelp
Yay love salt and straw and especially love that there's one by UTC open late! I went on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving to get a last minute taste of their Thanksgiving turkey and stuffing flavor, and also split a scoop of pear and blue cheese. As always, service was friendly and accommodating with lots of free tastings. The turkey and stuffing flavor had real turkey sausage but I was not prepared for how incredibly salty and savory this ice cream was. I wouldn't say it was bad, but it wasn't super enjoyable tbh. The pear and blue cheese was a first for me and that one was the perfect balance of fruit and cream, with a lil funk to make it taste fancy. Big fan of this one! Also, if you're not super in the mood for ice cream, I recommend getting a kids scoop. We shared 2 reg scoops between 3 people and by the end we were completely tapped out.

Yelp
Went to the One Paseo location today. Our scooper was awesome and let us try samples based on food allergies and his own recommendations. They have impeccable gluten free and dairy free options. I could probably eat ice cream for every meal if it made sense and this place was SO good. I tried the coconut cake and pineapple jam and it changed my life! So so so delicious. This was a limited time flavor and I am sad to see it go for the month but hopefully it will make a return soon! So delicious!!

Yelp
SALT & STRAW - This place is more than just an icecream parlor. . . It's a diverse experience for your palate to explore, and they work with the purpose of eliminating food waste in our society. * They utilize ingredient-sourcing systems that incorporate UPCYCLING Methods and Support small businesses & farms that work to eliminate food waste within the food industry. This Purpose Alone Inspires me to support them in their growth. I love businesses that support, smaller organizations and businesses in their work ethic. * I came to their PRE GRAND OPENING EVENT and I was taken aback by my experience. Their shop is small, trendy and still has an earthy vibe with their interior color scheme & decor. Service was exceptionally friendly and helpful with selection process. I love that they allowed me to have samples to get an idea of what flavors to choose from. In addition, they have cups, waffle cones, milkshakes and to-go pints as options. The magic truly happens when I got a chance to understand what their work practices & methods were. I can truly get behind a business that does not endorse food waste, and instead, works to eliminate it. Oh also, truly love that they have a staple of original flavors that are still diverse, and even include a special "seasonal" menu, that changes on the 1st Friday of the month. They're limited edition collab flavors are also immaculate! It was very clean inside, and they have gender neutral bathrooms and this was overall a fantastic experience. Congratulations to Salt & Straw to their new location!

Yelp
I think Salt and Straw really pushes the creative boundaries of ice cream flavors. They have a "creepy crawly critters" flavor for Halloween and let me tell you I was shocked when the worker said there were actual mealworms and crickets in the flavor. Not to mention, their last chance scoops included this potato salad and fried chicken flavor with potato chunks and chicken fat??!! I appreciate the dedication to their craft in serving their customers unique flavors. If it's your first time, I recommend doing the "Taste It All!" They let you sample every flavor on the menu. Really great experience for first timers :) Their smallest size, the kids scoop, was around $5 for the perfect amount of post-dinner dessert. My favorite flavors are Coffee & Love Nuts and Honey Lavender. If you like coffee flavor, Coffee & Love Nuts is the flavor for you. I also really enjoyed their Honey Lavender (wouldn't recommend if you don't like flowery tasting flavors). Salt & Straw is one of my favorite dessert places at UTC, will be coming by again.

Yelp
I highly recommend their Honey Lavender flavor! They have a couple classic flavors like salted caramel, snickerdoodle, mint, etc. that were all good. They also have some seasonal flavors. When we went, they had an ice cream flavor with real bugs, like crickets, inside!! We were too scared to try that but you should give it a try if you dare lol. The person helping me was very friendly and patient, even as I tried almost every flavor on the menu haha. I love it when ice cream places encourage you to try a bunch of flavors because I just want to make sure I like what I get :') I definitely didn't feel judged or embarrassed to do that here. Salt & Straw has a lot of different locations that all provide great ice cream, service, and location in my experience. This location is no exception. Give it a try if you're at UTC!
