How I heard of this place: Nearly a decade ago, while in Portland, friends and I found Salt & Straw and were so excited to have done so. I've been wanting to go again since and here we finally are.
Type of cuisine: "We're Salt & Straw, Portland's farm-to-cone ice cream shop. Our ice cream is handmade in small-batches using only all-naturaldairy with the best local, sustainable and organic ingredients Oregon has to offer, as well as imported flavors from small, handpicked farms and producers around the world. We start with fresh, local, all-natural cream from family owned farms in the Willamette Valley. Our ice cream is made with 17% butterfat, very little air in the churn process, and a low sweetness level...so the flavors can really shine through!"
Ambiance: A country home meets a circus tent with sleek and minimalist design. A hard space to capture in just a few simple words, yet the welcome is warm and inviting, and the focus certainly on the frozen treats! Indoor space is plentiful though seating is sparse. A large bench is available for patrons and restless children as you await your turn in line. The barquette window-side has limited seating and allows for views onto the Ballard old town streets. Benches are also available on the sidewalk, street-side, which makes for great people- and dog-watching.
What I ordered: For our kids, Pots of Gold & Rainbows - this legendary favorite, with hand-sorted "luck from the charms, steeping the whole-grain cereal in cream for that bottom-of-the-bowl sweetened milk before stirring in mountains of rainbow 'mallows." One also did a half-scoop of Peanut Butter Brittle Caramel Fudge (v) - "Our tribute to the most iconic duo of all time: chocolate & peanut butter. Creamy coconut vanilla ice cream is drizzled with a semi-sweet caramel fudge swirl then flecked with shards of crispy, crackly brittle studded with peanut butter. The juxtaposition of textures and flavors coalesce for a rich yet balanced bite reminiscent of the iconic childhood treat, Moose Tracks." and the other with a half-scoop of marionberry sorbet. For me, two half-scoops (which really was like a double scoop anywhere else) of Peanut Butter Brittle Caramel Fudge (v) and Coffee & Love Nuts - "An ice cream as cozy and comforting as Sunday morning. We brew a smooth, caramel-y medium roast coffee from Colombia, blend it with our cream, and stud it with immaculate Love Nuts-pecans caramelized in tahitian vanilla, sprinkled with sea salt, then coated in 14 layers of chocolate."
What I loved: The vegan Peanut Butter Brittle Caramel Fudge! It was a surprising favorite for me and my companions.
Why I loved it: Simple ingredients, healthy sample sizes and creative, novel flavors.
Cost: High, but worth the "special treat" splurge.
