Chicago’s Essential Burgers

"The owners of IDOF (I Dream of Falafel) transformed their Wicker Park location into Salt, a burger that will remind diners of a certain West Coast chain. The griddled patties are juicy with a good sear, and the fresh-cut fries and onion rings are ideal complements. The burger is also halal. Salt operates additional outposts in Rogers Park and at Navy Pier." - Eater Staff, Ashok Selvam, Naomi Waxman

After hearing many a mixed review about this place- I decided to do the logical thing and try it myself with my family. Right off the bat- maybe don’t bring your entire family. The seating is super limited- prepare to stand like a hawk looking for a table to clear on the weekends. We ordered through the kiosk and the food came out in about 35 minutes. I would say the prices are also very reasonable. As someone who has been to in & out a few times- I understand the comparison. The fries are better, the burgers- similar. We ordered one of each fry for the table and the Salt fries win. The meat is halal and good quality, cooked thin and crispy on the edges. All the men in our party seemed to agree that one double burger is not enough to fill them up- they opted for a triple or another single/double burger. I ordered the “flying dutchman” spin off and let me tell you- HARD pass. Everything was great besides it. The onions are cut too thick making it impossible to taken a clean bite- leaving you with a mess of ground beef onion mush. Would return for their regular double burger with peppers.

Google
An excellent spot for a classic smash burger. I ordered the double cheeseburger (sans veggies) and was beyond impressed by the quality flavor. Burgers are cooked well-done, tender, paired with grilled onions, a generous topping of pickles, signature SALT sauce, and soft buns. While the meat speaks for itself, the buns have room for improvement, but otherwise one of the best burgers in Chicago. The interior spaces are open and clean with a lot of daylight. One of the more comfortable fast food joints in Wicker Park. If you want a great burger and an affordable price, come check them out!

Google
Such great smash burgers. I ordered a single and it was plenty of food so the price was kept low and I appreciate that. The fries are skinny and crispy and salty, like what McDonald’s wishes they could be. Onion rings tasted like a proper beer batter. I recommend getting house burger sauce for your fries or rings. It’s sweet and vinegary. I would say the only downside of this restaurant is the atmosphere. I wish it was not so bright and loud. You can’t escape the loud music on either side of the restaurant and it’s just not a sit and relax type of atmosphere.

Syeda A.

Google
Amazing food experience. You have to go here if you haven’t. If you have then go again. The burger is well cooked and has lots of flavor. Fries are good and they have different kind as well. The staff there is amazingly professional and kind. Have a wonderful day! 😀

Lauren R.

Google
This restaurant is so good. Great burgers, good crispy fries, and quick service. It’s popular so your food won’t be ready immediately, but the staff are cooking food behind the glass at the front counter and they work diligently to made your order as quickly as possible. Ordering is easy through a kiosk, and there wasn’t a line to order when I went. Prices are also very reasonable. (Note that they share the same place as a cafe)

Anna Z.

Google
First time trying today. I thought it was really good. Simple and classic smashburger. Good cheese with fries, fuego onion rings are hot ones.

Anthony M.

Google
SALT is the best fast food burger one could get! Wish they had these in Texas! That damn burger though, my mouth is drooling as I write this review. The seasoning they used on the patties was mesmerizing. The flavor was an explosion with every bite. And the shake was pretty amazing too. I had the strawberry and it tasted very fresh, I do believe they use fresh strawberries when they make it. Pretty chill vibes would def recommend. Burger was 9.2/10 and shake was 8/10.

Mir V.

Google
Great location, great food. I know dang right when they got la raza whippin it up it’s gonna be good. Great experience and the food is quality. There was a lot of activity in the area, it was lively and tasty. Would definitely go there again. Despite the traffic they seem to get, it’s very clean.

Yelp
great burger. juicy and tasty, albeit on the verge of falling apart, construction-wise. highly recommend adding peppers, and maybe removing tomatoes (they were fine, but adds more mess and soggy buns by nature). i'd compare this to a five guys burger with better seasoning and less grease (with in n out sauce) fries were thin and pretty good, and the onion rings were some of the best i've had recently. ghost pepper versions were great, and actually quite spicy!
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
This spot was pretty good. The burger was very flavorful, but the burger integrity didn't hold up great. I really liked it, but it kind of felt like I was eating a sloppy Joe at times. This seems like it would be a great late night spot but it closes at 10. The workers were very friendly, but this is a place where they have a giant screen where you have to place your order at. I'm probably just getting old, but I hate when places have the self order screens. Just take my order please. Overall good place.
google avatar

Jose C.

Yelp
I was debating between giving this place a 3 or 4 star review. Still not a big fan of ordering from a screen and then get asked to tip and the end. The service? There is no service. You place your order on the screen and then they call your order number and walk away. There's no thank you or eye contact. And there's also no condiments outside either. The burger though. That's a different story. Screw the customer service I guess. As long as the food is good, sometimes in the end, that's all that really matters. It was a very delicious burger indeed. The patty tasted fresh and was seasoned perfectly. Would definitely be returning for this fairly priced burger. We also ordered their Fuego fries. These were definitely spicy. But also very addicting to eat. I would probably recommend eating these after you're finished with your burger. Otherwise you won't have any tastebuds. Beard Papas is also in the same building. I'll right a separate review for them...

Yelp
We ordered takeout so I can only speak about the food, however, the burger was amazing! It was juicy and delicious and gave everything a classic cheeseburger should. The Salt fries were tasty - it reminded us of their version of animal-style fries. Their standard fries would've been tastier if we had ordered them there - sadly I don't think they deliver very well, which is why I took one star off. Their onion rings were incredible though! They were huge, lightly breaded, and extremely delicious. We also ordered their Fuego fries and onion rings and there's a huge emphasis on "Fuego". I'd like to think I have a good spice tolerance, but these were beyond anything I've ever had. We could only a few bites of each before we were sweating. Unfortunately, those were the only things that were left uneaten. Overall, I'd get this again but I would try and order directly next time. I've seen their locations and they seem like a great late-night spot to grab a good burger. I wouldn't recommend getting it delivered as some of the food may not arrive very fresh.

Taara H.

Yelp
My new favorite "fast food" burger! Was exploring the Navy Pier eateries and was intrigued by SALT Halal Burgers. I've never seen a halal burger joint, so I decided to try it out! Placed my family's order via the kiosk and our 4 burgers and fries were ready in about 5 minutes! Hot, fresh, and combo of flavor and textures was perfection! Lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, grilled onions, cheese and SALT sauce....mmmmhmmm. I wish they were a chain, but alas, I guess it's just a treat for Chicago natives and visitors ;)
google avatar

Mariam K.

Yelp
The hype is real! Best burgers and fries I've ever had. Highly recommend the peppers in the burger 10/10 !!!

Connor D.

Yelp
The food itself is really good! But the service is horrendous. The guy behind the counter was rude and complrtely unhelpful. It was like pulling teeth to get my reciept even and he acted like everything was a huge task asked of him. I ordered a cheeseburger with only cheese and I got everything on it and I just gave it away because it wasn't even worth trying to reason with him to remake it. I would go to another location if you can.
google avatar

Ariana G.

Yelp
Finally tried SALT! Apparently its supposed to mimic In-N-Out. It was actually not bad! This place has a limited menu serving up smash burgers and their version of "animal fries" as well as other menu items. The salt fries were nothing special - fries were pretty soggy. The burger itself was pretty decent and probs taste better fresh. The salt sauce wasn't overpowering at all. I would love to come back and dine- in for a better experience.
google avatar

Christa M.

Yelp
The double cheeseburger was really good and filling. It was pretty juicy and was seasoned and cooked well. The French fries were crunchy and had plenty of salt on top but were still edible. The inside was dirty. The tables were all over the place and the floors were gross. It was pretty busy so finding a table was a challenge. They do share the space with a dessert place so not sure who has the cleaning duties, but by the looks of it no one had cleaned in a while. We had no interaction with the employees and only approached them when our order was called out. The menu is on the kiosk and it's easy to read and order from.
google avatar

Kelly D.

Yelp
Self service ordering, the food came out pretty quick. Everything was hot and freshly made. Good burgers and onion rings. Extremely reasonably priced especially for the location.
google avatar

Ollie W.

Yelp
Cheap quality burgers, and really good fries. I like the onion rings a lot too. It's kinda like fast food, but also slow food. Service was pretty good. The store itself was a mix of beard papas, quite crowded.

Jannette L.

Yelp
Definitely one of the best burgers I've had in a looonngg time! And the onion rings were perfect as well.now every time I'm in Chicago I'm going to have to have it!
google avatar

Joseph S.

Yelp
I saw a tiktok about this place and tried it out. I was in the area and got a single patty cheeseburger with hot peppers on it as recommended. When I first walked in, I was a bit confused since it was in the same space as beard papas and it seemed like no staff was there. I check their hours and it seemed like they were open so I placed an order on the kiosk and people came out and started to make it. It was pretty quick and when I got it, I took a bit and it was flavorful. It was just salty enough and not too greasy. I will be back again!
google avatar

Christine B.

Yelp
I chose Salt Burger & Fries because I was killing time between checking out of The Robey and heading to O'Hare airport. After reading reviews thought I'd give it a shot. As someone previously mentioned, you order and pay from a touch screen where there is a tip prompt. Like aren't tips for great service? The whole time I was looking at the touch screen two workers were standing there scowling at me waiting. Unfriendly and no I didn't tip. Burger and fries were great. I'd go again if I was in the neighborhood. I will never tip at this establishment. Do you tip at McDonalds?
google avatar

Sabina S.

Yelp
tl;dr: fast, easy, affordable and delicious! Reminded me a lot of the burger joints back home in CA like in-n-out. Will be back ---- Stopped here for lunch after a full morning of unpacking after moving to the city. It hit the spot! The food was prepared super quickly and was so good. The burger was one of the best fast food burgers I have had since my beloved In-n-out in California. I got the single which is also called the "kid" size. The onion rings were perfect tho the serving size is huge so you can likely split with someone. The fries were SO crispy and salty *chefs kiss* I also ordered an Oreo milkshake which was super creamy bc it was made from custard. 12/10 would recommend and will be back! Also has seating inside and was clean and easy to access with street parking near by.
google avatar

Lauren G.

Yelp
First time trying Salt and it was such a delicious burger! It's a smash burger style with a special sauce. It was flavorful and juicy! The fries were a bit soggy but we also ordered DoorDash so weren't able to eat them fresh. I think the container for the fries could be improved. The plastic box leaves no ventilation so I think an open container would work better. Otherwise, loved the burger and will definitely order again!
google avatar

M S.

Yelp
By far the best smash burger around...simple and delicious with friendly service. The ambience is conducive to sit down with friends and share some light moments
google avatar

Abdullah P.

Yelp
If Shake Shack and In'n'Out had a baby, this would be it right here. The burgers are impeccable, always fresh, and come out quick Super easy to order off the tablets, friendly staff, and great ownership. Definitely will be back!
google avatar

Jaleh S.

Yelp
If you are reading this - you have to try this burger place out. There's not a lot of Halal burger spots but this smashburger is just so mouth-wateringly delectable. It's the closest thing to a halal version of In-n-out burger but BETTER! *chefs kiss*
google avatar

Johnfavour N.

Yelp
Salt is the most similar burger joint in Chicago that's comparable to In N Out in terms of flavor only. The burgers will run you about $8 but sometimes it's just worth it to satisfy that craving. The smash patties they use do have a nice crisp and their sauce is very similar to animal sauce. They also have fresh lemonade and salt fries (very similar to animal style fries) with colorful chopped chilies, but one difference is there isn't any cheese on it. They do offer impossible burgers here which is a nice option if you don't want meat. Parking in wicker park is a bit of a hassle but if you circle around you can find street parking. There's great natural light here, so much so that I had to adjust my seat since the sun was shining in my eyes.
google avatar

Stacy H.

Yelp
Ordered a double cheeseburger and a side of onion rings at one of their two kiosks. It doesn't look like you can order with a person. After paying, I get the receipt (see picture) which states there is an issue with sending my order to the kitchen. Not sure why this technical issue occurred but I told the worker and then sat down. The order came out pretty quickly (within 5 minutes). Double Cheeseburger (3/5): I like in-and-out waaaay better. The patties were cooked too well which made them chewy, and they were seasoned with too much black pepper - that's all I could taste. The sauce wasn't anything special either. Onion rings (3/5): Pretty standard. Good texture and taste - not bad but nothing special. I'm glad I tried it but probably won't be back.
google avatar

Huyen V.

Yelp
Attached to bearded papa, Salt burger and fries is suppose to be the east coast's in-n-out. I believe the flavor is wayyy better than in-n-out especially the fries! The seasoning may be a little salty for some people but I like my burger with some flavor so I enjoyed it. Me and the bf were on a food adventure so we got the single patty burger with the loaded fries. Next time I'll go with the double patty burger. We also got a horchata shake which was also really good.
google avatar

Abisola O.

Yelp
Omg they seasoned the heck out of these patties, really really delicious burger! I can't imagine how much better it would be if I had it fresh instead of delivery. The fries were ok, probably not best for delivery because it gets soggy but they weren't bad. But yeah, this burger is one of the best I've had and I'm super picky about burgers because they never put enough seasonings in the patties so I had to come straight here to write a review!
google avatar

Shiraz H.

Yelp
Super good. I got the double cheeseburger and it was amazing. I shouldn't compare, but this was actually better than In-n-out. 5 stars for sure. Highly recommend trying this place. Don't worry about the interior, the food is worth it.
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
It lives up to its name!! First bite into my burger and I was hit in the face with salt. Overall I'd say it was a pretty tasty burger but at the end it was too sloppy and messy for me to finish. The fries were also crispy and salty but the cheese sauce tasted just like tostitos jar queso so nothing special. Needless to say the woman greeted me as I went to order and was helpful and kind when I asked about the menu. I've wanted to go for a while and I'm glad I did, but can't say I'd return given all the other restaurants in the area I'd like to try.
google avatar

Marlene S.

Yelp
Quick and easy! I walked in and was able to quickly place my order and did not have to wait long. All the seats were taken but once my food was ready, I was able to snag a seat. I can see how this can be compared to in and out, but I honestly think this is way better. I had cheese fries but wish it was actual cheese fries, not me pouring cheese myself lol
google avatar

Marie F.

Yelp
The second stop on the Wicker Park Tour was Salt Burgers + Fries. I've heard amazing things about their burgers and knew I had to try it. I got a Double Cheeseburger with No Lettuce, Tomato and Pickle and a Lemonade. The Burger was okay nothing to write home about but my bun was burnt. The Lemonade was very sour like there wasn't any sugar in it or that they had used a Meyer Lemon instead. Overall, my experience wasn't the greatest. The Menu isn't big so there isn't a lot of other options I could try. The Price was average but not worth it because it wasn't anything fancy.
google avatar

Ashley A.

Yelp
Great burgers and made to order which just makes it melt in your mouth! If you are craving a burger that will just hit the spot look no further the service is fast so it's a good spot if you are on the go
google avatar

Jhenevie O.

Yelp
Salt is a very delicious fast food burger joint! We get the classic burger. It definitely is super spicy with the jalepenos so if you struggle with spice, ask for it on the side. The sauce is delicious. It's a great fast food option and pretty straightforward. Service is pretty straight forward. You can order through the electronic ordering station or at the register and then pick up your order. Salt is a restaurant conjoined with Bearded Papa's. Plenty of seating for a large group!
google avatar

Tracy C.

Yelp
By far one of the worst burgers I have ever had in my life. I had high hopes given that it was supposed to be an In n Out dupe, but man was it bad. The bun was extremely soggy and wet. How does that even happen?! On top of that, it tasted like nothing. Please do yourself a favor and go grab a burger somewhere else. It is not worth your money.
google avatar

E D.

Yelp
ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!! Highly recommend.. I hate I did take to many pictures, or any in that matter lol
google avatar

Charissa F.

Yelp
The Midwest version of in and out burger! They are very speedy even on a busy Saturday night. The restaurant is connected to a dessert place by the same owner I believe. The smash burgers are not huge but delicious! Great price and a go to for me especially in the summer. Great place to meet a friend for an affordable lunch or dinner. I spent $12.
google avatar

Tinisha B.

Yelp
The food was great per usual and the service was excellent the manager Kayla and our server were so awesome with taking care of all of our needs. It's a very nice vibe with valet parking. Causal wear and pricing is about $50 (entree and appetizer including) bring a little extra for cocktails
google avatar

Julius S.

Yelp
I ordered the double cheeseburger and impressed by the quality of the food. The burger was juicy and flavorful, and the peppers added a nice kick of heat. The salt fries were deliciously crispy and seasoned, and everything stayed fresh and hot during pick-up. When I arrived to grab my order, the staff were quick and friendly, and made sure all customers were also accommodated. Exceptional customer service. I would recommend this place if you're craving a burger and fries. If you like Shake Shack and In-N-Out, then Salt Burgers + Fries is worth a try. Can't go wrong here!
google avatar

Lana T.

Yelp
The burgers were good and the ghost pepper fries and onion rings were so fire. It was quick to order
google avatar

Pooja P.

Yelp
I saw a tiktok saying in-n-out dupe in Chicago and I had to give this place a try. To start off, this place isn't like in-n-out but still SOO good. We got salt fries, ghost pepper fries, and cheese fries with veggie burger w/o the impossible patty. Both the fries and burger were amazing and I'll definitely come back! If you like spicy food I would recommend the ghost pepper fries but they are VERY spicy. I also really liked the cheese that came for the cheese fries. The Salt fries are what they are known for and they were amazing! The day we went they ran out of impossible patty so we got the burgers w/o the patty and they were still amazing!! I would definitely recommend this place to my friends and family!
google avatar

Gus L.

Yelp
Pick two: Quick, well made and inexpensive. Here you get quick and inexpensive. Might have been an off day but the burger was just okay. The loaded fries did hit though. Quick service through kiosks and friendly folks running the grill. Would be great as a late night spot but don't see them changing the hours.
google avatar

Andy K.

Yelp
Social burger I saw their postings online and knew I had to stop during a trip down to Chicago. While it looks like they do a lot of togo orders, I opted to dine in so there was no chance for fry sogginess. The burger itself was really good, nice grind on the beef. The fries were fantastic as well. Nicely done and a great value compared to other spots. Service was fast but ordering was kind of a pain with their kiosk. They share space with a place that does cream puffs, an interesting franchise deal, but I was too full after the burger.
google avatar

Nathalie G.

Yelp
Was craving some in n out burgers but they have yet to be in Chicago. When I heard of this place through TikTok I was so excited to try these animal style burgers. Ordering was done though tablets. Super easy process. One thing I noticed right away was the tables were limited and it looked very messy. The forks& spoons were out,the fountain drinks were also out and the floor was covered in napkins and other trash particles. Seemed like the spot was shorthanded with staff but I thank the cooks that were getting orders out quickly. Back of house was pumping orders, front of house sadly looked a hot mess. Over all the taste of the burger was pretty good and the loaded fries were delicious and reminiscent of in n out. It all came in takeout boxes and to go bags, even if you are dining in. Again, they may be short staffed and needed to make things smoother for the dinner rush. Paid $43 for 3 burgers, 2 fries and 2 shakes, which is pretty reasonable.
google avatar

Rozalynn B.

Yelp
We came in on a Friday night right before closing time. It was a little packed, but no line to order or sit and eat. We were totally confused on how to order, nobody greeted us or offered to take the order so we used the kisok machines. We had special requests that we wanted, which were well done burgers, & specific condiments, we tried to tell the only English speaking employee who was behind the register our requests, she yelled then back to them in Spanish. We receive our burgers, THEY'RE NOT WELL DONE. We sit to eat, and we're looking for mustard, and there isn't any just ketchup. I don't eat ketchup. I want mustard. It's time to go. I ate mine when I got home and got mustard. By then, the thrill was gone, food Luke warm, AND not well done? Yep, I'm never going back. Thanks!
google avatar

Nina A.

Yelp
A real solid burger at a decent price. The double cheeseburger is my go-to. A bit on the small side but every bite of it is delicious and satisfying. At the self serve kiosks, you also have the option to customize your burger to your liking. I also got the fuego onion rings, which are normal onion rings tossed in a powdered spice mix. I wish they added more of the spice mix and that it was more evenly distributed. About half of my onion rings were barely spicy and a few had the nice kick I was expecting.
google avatar

Annie C.

Yelp
Great smash burgers. Always consistent! The salt fries are also really good. Must get the peppers in your burger for a little kick.

Saydees G.

Yelp
I love the burgers here! They've been good every time I've come and the meat tastes fresh. The price is decent for wicker park I guess but they also have a dessert area connected that sells mochi and other baked goods. Service is always nice here. The overall ambiance is okay I wouldn't dine in because the tables and floors can be sticky but great for a quick bite.
google avatar

A J.

Yelp
I've been here a few times and it's a great place for halal smash burgers. The food has consistently been good. Burgers were nicely seasoned. Everything tasted fresh and high quality. Definitely worth trying
google avatar

Nolan F.

Yelp
A small but really solid and decently priced burger. Great crispy and beefy flavor on the smashed patties. Buns were soft and veggies were fresh. Burger holds well together. Great flavor and texture overall when you bite into this burger. Fries were a mix of soggy and crispy fries which I like. I like the clean, simple, and wide interior space. I like even more that it shares a space with a dessert shop - Beard Papa's.
google avatar

Zach S.

Yelp
I am an In N Out afficiando. This place comes close to that style. Ive only had it delivered and the burger comes over a little greasy and soggy. So will need to dine in and hopefully change my review to a 4 star. The "animal style" fries are amazing.

Chudney W.

Yelp
this is the most unclean restaurant ever. None of wash the hands... they literally gave me my bagged food greasy and wet from their nasty gloves! the entire restaurant is filthy...the tables, the chairs, the doors and the bathroom! it's pathetic. I will never eat from here again!
google avatar

Misa T.

Yelp
**takeout order review** I absolutely love smash burgers so I had to give this place a try. It was a perfectly smashed lacey edged burger, the seared edges were deliciously thin and crispy. The inside was just a tad overcooked with some bites but it was really good nonetheless. There was plenty of flavor to the burger. The special salt sauce, grilled onions, and pickles really enhanced the burger. The potato buns are soft, tasty, and add the perfect texture. The burger is reminiscent of Steak 'n Shake burgers in my opinion. Since I ordered takeout I just got the cheese fries (cheese on the side) instead of the salt fries (Cheese, Grilled Onions, SALT sauce, Hot peppers) since I figured it would be all soggy by the time I got it. The fries actually traveled well and were still fresh by the time I got them. This place is a must try!
google avatar

Bill M.

Yelp
SALT Burgers + Fries is a fairly new burger joint on North Avenue in Wicker Park, and it should do well as it shares a space with Beard Papa's cream puffs! I ate the junior cheeseburger, and it was pretty tasty. I nibbled on a corner of the beef patty and it had a great savory flavor, and it should be good since they say it's a blend of prime brisket and chuck. It took just a few minutes for them to put the burger together, so you know you are getting it fresh. The toppings include cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, pickles and "SALT sauce" - all nice and messy and tasty. SALT's menu is pretty brief, so they should get everything right. My love let me sample some of her onion rings, and they were nice and crunchy. We didn't try their fries, but I hear that they are pretty good too.

From LA here, My family were craving for a beard papa, so our friend who's also our tour guide brought us here after Touring downtown. Inside beard papa, there is a small burger place on your right when u enter the building. I got curious, it looks good on pictures. So aside from ordering creme puff from BP, I also ordered a double burger and salt fried you know jist to try it. Thank god I did! They were so delicious! one of the best burgers I had in years! The fries is kinda similar to in and out burger animal fries only better! Yes they are better!! Their sauce is amazing, fries is crunchy on the outside sofr in the inside. I just wish we have this in LA... 5 stars in my opinion eventhough its just my first time, hopefully not the last! Good job!
