The Best Restaurants to Try in Del Mar, California | Eater San Diego

"Salt + Lime owner Alan Efter got his culinary start from a food truck he operated in North Park, serving Mexican street food specialties he grew up around. At his first brick-and-mortar restaurant, Efter is bringing his street food specialties to North County and has since opened a second location in Costa Mesa. Located on Highway 101, the casual open-air restaurant serves favorites like Baja fish tacos, sweet and sour popcorn shrimp, steak chicharron huarache, and white mole with mushrooms. Daily happy hour operates from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. with a weekend late-night happy hour from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m." - Helen I. Hwang

Want a taste of relaxing but luxurious view?! This is the right place. My husband and I really enjoyed the view and the atmosphere. The waitress was very nice and my tostada was amazing! I’m so happy we decided to make the drive there. Definitely looking forward to our next visit.

Google
Visiting from the East Coast, my dad and I had an amazing experience at Salt & Lime in Del Mar. The food was incredible, but what really made our night was the hospitality—especially from our server, Rudy. He went above and beyond with great suggestions, a warm attitude, and even surprised us with free churros. The whole place has such a welcoming vibe, and you can tell they genuinely care about their guests. Highly recommend—wish we had a spot like this back home!

Google
PHENOMENAL! The food was absolutely delicious. We got the queso fundido and sweet and sour popcorn shrimp appetizers, and then some tacos for main meal. I had the quesabirria taco and it was one of the best things I’ve ever eaten, it was sooooo good. The restaurant is trendy, love the decor and the atmosphere, seating lets you enjoy the great weather and views. Plus all of the staff and the owner were super nice and appreciative! 10/10 would recommend and I wish we weren’t flying back to NY cause I would eat here all the time!

Google
This place was really fun and cute spot in solana beach! I especially loved the tacos - the taco mi rey was sooo good! The baja fish was good and refreshing with a unique sauce but maybe a little dry when you get a large bite of fish. The won tostada was also really good!

Google
The Salt and Lime is a small Mexican restaurant with a view of the Pacific Ocean, in Del Mar. The menu is à la carte. The chicken taco was good. The Birria taco was just ok. The fish taco was mostly cabbage, and little fish. The rice and beans had no flavor. The salt and lime cocktail was good. The michilada was good. The best item that we ordered at the restaurant was the hot salsa…. Boy, was it hot and tasty. Service was good and the view was very nice. The high prices keep the riffraff out. This is some place I would NOT recommend to my family and friends. I would definitely pass, if I was in the area again.

The food was hot, delicious and absolutely beautifully seasoned. The staff were kind, helpful, and the service was phenomenal. Would highly recommend checking this place out!

Google
Nice place! But very disappointed on the food. It is not good whatsoever! And overpriced. $9 for a carne asada taco. My boyfriend ordered 3 because the waiter said they were very small (they’re not) he forced himself to eat 1. The drinks are not good either.

Google
A Vibrant Dining Experience! Went to Salt + Lime and loved it! The place has such a fun, colorful vibe with flowers, cactus, and these cool pink lights inside. It feels lively but still comfortable. The food was fresh and flavorful — you can tell they use good ingredients. Food was amazing, I didn’t even want to share. The cocktails are a must-try, especially anything with their fresh lime (seriously, so refreshing). Service was great too — friendly without being overbearing. You can tell the staff actually enjoys working here. Definitely coming back, and next time I’m bringing friends so we can try more of the menu.

Yelp
We love coming to Salt and Lime! One of our favorite things about this place is how dog-friendly it is. The patio is nicely decorated and has such a fun, casual atmosphere that makes it easy to relax and enjoy. Our server, Bresas, was super friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. The food and drinks are consistently delicious, with great flavors and the chips are super tasty. Also, don't forget to order the churros, it was delicious. Whether you're stopping by for a quick bite or hanging out with friends (and furry companions!), Salt and Lime is always a great choice. Highly recommend for anyone looking for good food, great service, and a chill vibe!

Yelp
There is a really fun vibe to this place, and there's a great ambience and view. I love the overall feel. Everybody here is incredibly friendly, although be prepared, there is very limited seating. I came on a Wednesday at 7:30pm, and there was bar seating available. There was this great deal that evening, where we got 6 tacos for $30, and I do think that this was a great deal, although I'm not sure how often it was offered. Overall the tacos were good, although if we came on a regular day, I'm not sure I could justify spending $12+ on just one taco.
google avatar

Mart L.

Yelp
1) their tacos are mid at best, subpar in the context of being in a Hispanic state 2) stale chips - sad 3) pina cocktail was nauseatingly over sweet Know that going here you're paying for vibe and location. Service and objectively good food is NOT found here, sadly. Tourism is floating their sub-par food.

Yelp
I came here to celebrate a friend's birthday, and while the ocean view and overall ambiance were beautiful, the experience was not good. I had a reservation, but despite that--and even though there were several empty tables--we still had to wait quite a while to be seated. My friend ordered the fish tacos, which he said were just average, and we shared the potato taquitos, which were also underwhelming. As a vegetarian, I ordered the Nopalita and Tampico tostadas but was mistakenly served a fish tostada. Thankfully, I noticed before eating it. Trying to get a server's attention took forever, and when I finally did, they casually admitted it was the wrong dish without even offering an apology. What was worse, they expected me to still eat the correct tostada that had been sitting next to the fish one, which felt careless and inconsiderate. After yet another long wait, I was finally brought the right tostadas, but they were just okay. The nopalitos were cold and not particularly flavorful--I've had much better elsewhere. To top it off, the server accidentally dropped two churros on the floor and, while they did offer complimentary ice cream for my friend's birthday, it didn't make up for the poor service and food. I understand mistakes happen, but a sincere apology and an effort to make things right go a long way--something I wish the staff here understood. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I wouldn't return or recommend this place to others.

Yelp
I'm sorry but the food needed more flavor. It was bland. I heard a lot of "this doesn't taste good" comments from the table. I myself had the Yucatán Ceviche - it was bland. My partner had the Chicken Milanesa - there was no flavor at all. As a Mexican individual, I'm embarrassed for even deciding to try this place out. Sure the vibe is nice but to me it all comes down to the food. One of my pet peeves when it comes to Mexican eateries is not having the classic aguas frescas - like how are you getting away with this? I expected lots of flavor but again, I should have known better. Immediately walking in was the initial red flag...the clientele. Yes this place is located in Del Mar so you can guess what kind of clientele they cater to. Sadly this was a miss for me. As you can tell, I'm a harsh reviewer but that's because I keep it real. None of this "omg this was so good".

Yelp
Cute spot in the heart of Del Mar with open patio. Personally I appreciate chic ambience and Europeanlike feeling when you dine. I've ordered tacos and was content with food quality and presentation.

Yelp
Enjoyed a delicious late lunch here. Loved our server, but service was a little slow despite being only one of 2 tables present. My tostada was delicious and my husband loved his tacos. Not pictured is my son's plain cheese quesadilla, but he was a big fan :) Very cute and convenient spot on the main drag of Del Mar. Hope to make it back next time we're in town.
google avatar

Yelp
Came for brunch but ordered off the lunch menu haha. Ordered the grilled fish taco and the shrimp taco. Both were delicious. The service was so nice and helpful and overall had a great time!

Yelp
Such a cute spot with modern decor, a cute layout, and great margaritas! We love that they have weekend happy hour from 2:30-5:30, when the margaritas are only $10. Absolutely love the cilantro & Serrano marg-- will come back for that. They also gave complimentary chips & salsa (feel like that's more rare nowadays) & the salsas are good! I wish at least one of the two they served was spicy, but still good nonetheless. Great place to bring friends or family & socialize. They also welcomed our little doggo :)

Yelp
Went for lunch with a friend. The day was lovely so enjoyed sitting in the patio. Food is tasty but the portion was average. We tried popcorn shrimp and chicken pastor tacos. Service was quick and kind. We even asked our server to take some pics of us and he was very nice to do it.

Caitlyn M.

Yelp
I really enjoyed Salt and Lime! I dined alone and had a wonderful experience! They have a lovely atmosphere with great sunset views and my cocktail was so dreamy I keep thinking about it. The best part was my server, David. He was so friendly and attentive which made my experience dining alone so much better. I would have gave 5 stars, but it was a little pricey with one taco being $12...
google avatar

Mei T.

Yelp
I had dinner with a friend and we both agree the food, service, and ambiance were incredible! We ordered the ceviche yucatan and guacamole to share. If you like your ceviche with a strong citrus flavor, you are guaranteed to love it! The guacamole was very good, but the chips were a bit oily. We each ordered a quesabirria and taco mi-ray. These 2 were equally delicious. The quesabirria is a best seller, and I can understand why. Definitely try these two tacos! We also ordered "put the lime on the coconut" (corralejo silver, lime juice, pineapple juice, and coconut cream). It was a delicious cocktail! When dining here, plan to arrive early so you can catch a beautiful sunset. The restaurant is located within walking distance to the beach. There is a private parking structure with free 2-hour parking, as well as parking along the street.

Yelp
What a fun place. I am regular to the real estate of this establishment as it has morphed over the years and changed little in general other than decor (beautiful every time.) I've heard of S/L for a while but haven't had the chance to try it. It was day after T-Giving, so i'm giving some grace to the slow service, but she was wonderful otherwise. The tacos were AH-mazing. But...pricey! 12 dollars EACH. We ordered three and shared with 2 people (girls). $36 for 3 tacos albeit big and yum I'm not sure is justified. But they were delish. We go the BONE MARROW which was unbelievable. Now that was worth the cost for sure. The drinks were fun, overall wonderful menu and wonderful time. We will be back to SHARE tacos most likely (and bone marrow!!)
google avatar

Stephanie T.

Yelp
The food was excellent! Service was great too. I appreciated very much that they had some vegan options for me as well. The outdoor seating was lovely with a view of a sliver of the ocean and beautiful Del Mar. Overall this place was wonderful, my only complaint is with how expensive the food was. A bit overpriced, but that's what you get in Del Mar.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Yeah man this place is legit. Staying at a hotel down the street for work and walked the town and found this spot. Super quaint interior but also super cool looking. Definitely has an upscale vibe. Service was fast and friendly and my oh my was the food amazing. The bone marrow quesadilla is to die for! The 2 tacos I got were also amazing as were the cocktails. Everything here tasted real high quality!

Yelp
This place is such a vibe! If you're looking for a trendy, upbeat restaurant with delicious food, this is it! From the drinks, to the ambiance, down to the food, I loved it all!!! The entire restaurant/bar is covered but open outdoors, so you get fresh air, enjoy the sunset, all while eating great food and enjoying delicious handmade drinks. The bartender really put TLC into his delicious creations, and lemme tell you... they were phenomenal! The presentation of the food was exquisite, and there was so much flavor in every bite! We ordered two different ceviches, chips and guac (which is their staple) and tacos of course! I loved everything and cannot wait to come back and try more!!
google avatar

Mandi B.

Yelp
Based on the 3 foods I tried... I cannot find fault with any of it. Friends and I stopped here randomly after hiking the beach nearby. We were immediately greeted by our server with chips and salsa and an offer of water while we looked at the menus. We shared the vegan ceviche and it was so incredibly tasty! I ordered the nopales tostadas and was again blown away by the flavor and freshness of the ingredients. Service was great and prices were fair. We enjoyed the patio seating and the margaritas. Would definitely make a return trip here next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
Let's start with what I didn't like: Reservations. To make a reservation you have to put in your credit card and if you cancel within 48 hours you're out $10 per person on the reservation. We didn't wanna make that reservation because it was too stressful. Instead, we ended up parking near the restaurant on a Friday night walked up to the host and made a reservation for an hour later. Took a walk on the beach and then came back and had a reservation waiting for us. Also, felt the prices are too high. What I liked: The restaurant has a great vibe. To eat, we picked a bunch of different items and tried them all. One of my favorites was the queso dip. I was not impressed with the chips and the salsa was Ok. But I was hungry enough that I kept eating it. The highlight was that the waitress who was very nice overheard we were celebrating birthdays, and at the end of the meal, give us a complementary churro dessert. That was very good! I look forward to coming back with my husband for happy hour at another time.

Yelp
Cute restaurant that serves upscale Mexican food. There were 6 of us in our party celebrating a friend's bday. Food and cocktails were good. I ordered the chicken Al pastor and quesabirria tacos. Bother very delicious. We shared the chips and guac . (I always dislike it when Mexican places charge for chips. ) and I ordered the Put the Like in the Coconut cocktail. That was pretty and tasty. Only thing that was a miss for us was when they served all of us but the last person in our party didn't get her tacos for awhile. Also they didn't get our orders accurately. Ie some of us wanted picked onions and didn't get it while others didn't want cilantro and got it etc. so we asked our server to comp our friend's meal which she did so that demonstrated good customer service. Also they comp'd churros for the bday girl. I would come back because I appreciated their customer service.

Yelp
Love the decoration and location of this restaurant. The staff were nice and the free chip and salsa was also really good! We came here with our dog for drinks and that was just ok. The strawberry tajin margarita was just way too sweet. My partner got a mint/jalapeño cocktail that was definitely the better drink of the two. Even though it is dog friendly, I agree with other commenters that it's way too crowded (seats too close) and the crowd here is way too loud.
google avatar

Jenny N.

Yelp
Very cute and cool restaurant! I really liked the vibes and though there was a portion that was somewhat outdoors, they had heaters which was great. The service was pretty good but kind of scattered, sometimes we were waiting for a while to get help. We really enjoyed the margaritas! The tuna toastado I got was ok, I was indifferent about their tuna. I really liked the pickled onions though! There's parking in the structure under which is nice, but we found a lot of street parking!
google avatar

Yelp
More like a 3.5 star. Service was excellent. I guess when I'm getting Mexican food in So Cal I expect bold flavors... these flavors where more like meh .... It wasn't bad by any stretch. The location was nice and the interior was intimate (aka small) and you may want to make a reservation. Happy hour pricing help make it a 3.5 but if I had paid full price I'd be at a 2.9. Didn't have any drinks but they did have a good selection of Tequilas. I'm not a "no go" but I'm far from a "must go!"

Yelp
I visited on a Friday afternoon and was seated quickly. The outdoor seating area is beautifully decorated and charming. It was a bit chilly at first, but once the sun came out, it was much more comfortable. We started with the shrimp ceviche, which was served with two tostadas. It was delicious, though I felt it could have come with more tostadas. Complimentary chips and salsa were also provided, featuring two unique salsas that weren't spicy--perfect for me. I used some of the tortilla chips to finish off the ceviche, though I'm sure they would have brought more tostadas if I had asked. For my meal, I ordered the Al Pastor and shrimp tacos. At $9 each, they were on the pricier side, but they were generously filled and very satisfying--absolutely delicious. I also had the Cadillac margarita, which was excellent. The staff were very friendly, and parking options were convenient. You can park on a side street or in the complex, where parking is very affordable.

Yelp
I've had lunch twice now at this outstanding restaurant and continue to rave about it to friends. This is not the heavy, rice and beans with heavy tomato sauce that passes for Mexican food elsewhere; here the dishes are light, elegant, fresh and healthy, featuring superb ingredients and at the same time filling and delicious. The different ceviche dishes leave me with no room to eat anything else but I have to start by sharing the popcorn shrimp with the table. This is plump, tasty shrimp that is battered so lightly as to be invisible and incredibly tasty with its accompanying sauce. Friends have raved about their fresh, light tacos, so filled they had to take some home. A gourmet pleasure, as are the original drinks, delicious flan and churros for dessert, and best of all a wait staff that is friendly, attentive and discreet. A real treat.

Yelp
A delicious stop on the drive back from SD that we will look forward to returning to! They even have a private parking lot. We came for an early Sunday dinner and arrived 30 minutes before happy hour ended. Highly recommend their happy hour and will be returning because of this deal!! My steak and shrimp quesadilla is only on the happy hour menu and was a knockout! Perfectly balanced with the flavors and quantity of protein to cheese. The pineapple salsa and guac were excellent. The kids really enjoyed their kids chicken quesadilla which they split for us so each had their own plate. They actually devoured the rice and quesadilla which is rare so that is definitely a compliment to the chef. Hubby and my parents enjoyed their tacos and margaritas. Cute atmosphere with adorable decorations. Looking forward to returning again soon!
google avatar

Erika M.

Yelp
Location is perfect! Outside seating with a view of the ocean. Drinks were horrible. We got the la Rosa and put the lime in the coconut cocktail and they were not good. The la Rosa was so bitter and strong. It tasted like tequila only. When I asked for sprite to add to it I was brought back an orange liquor to mix in. Not as strong but still not good. The food however was delicious! I loved their bone marrow quesadilla, birria chilaquiles, and the Mexican French toast.
google avatar

Roselia G.

Yelp
Small and modern Mexican restaurant. Great music and love the decor. We were seated in the bar area with high top tables and chairs, but the seats, I have to say, were a bit uncomfortable, especially since my chair had a missing piece from the middle. Other than that, the food was good, but I would have liked to have had more non-alcoholic drink options, like tamarindo, jamaica, and horchata, but they didn't have any. It seems most come here just to drink and for appetizers. I was hoping for a bigger selection of food and sweet drinks.
google avatar

Marta P.

Yelp
We stop for happy hour mid day great location with ocean across the street good food and service in beautiful Del Mar
google avatar

Ella K.

Yelp
WOWWW!! This is the place to be food wise!! We saw this driving out to Encinitas and on the way back we stopped for a quick bite. I got two chicken tacos and one beef taco along with the queso. The food was incredible overall. Our server was also super nice but looked like he was the only server in charge of around 8 tables so after we put in the order we were not checked on until he brought the check. He was super nice but this was a little frustrating when we were trying to order refills. Overall super incredible food though which is why my eating is still so high.
google avatar

Rose L.

Yelp
We went here around 4:30pm for some cocktails. We got margaritas, a Paloma, chips and salsa and queso. It was all very good. The queso was a little different. It was melted cheese. It was good but not much added to it except cheese. I especially loved the two different types of salsa served and the chips were seasoned and hot! Our server was a delight and very attentive. The space has a very nice vibe. We will be back!
google avatar

Alice-Anne A.

Yelp
Thankful for outdoor seating allowing us to feel more comfortable to indulge in a nice lunch after a morning of hiking. Food was tasty and service was relaxed, allowing us to unwind and enjoy our post-hike lunch.

Yelp
Salt & Lime ‍ is a fun restaurant with signature margaritas and tapas. Too bad we were not able to try any of their drinks because they looked really good. I had the bone marrow quesadilla, but to my surprise the quesadilla was plain with the bone marrow served on the side. The quesadilla was dry and mid at-best, but the bone marrow was so tender and flavorful. The potatoes and rice sides were pretty standard. The shrimp appetizer we ordered was beautiful and was the stand-out dish. For the price and portions, probably would not go back other than for the convenience of being next to the fair. This restaurant is outdoors in a covered area (unless you are at a side are exposed to some sun ). Service was fine, but wish that they served ICE water.
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
This was our first visit here after walking on the beach. The lunch was delicious with complimentary chips and two delicious salsa dips. I ordered two tacos- mahi mahi and asada. Both were seasoned to perfection with fresh homemade tortillas. My husband ordered the roasted vegetables and quinoa salad with chicken breast. Excellent healthy flavors. We'll be back.
google avatar

Holly S.

Yelp
This place is FABULOUS! We loved their Happy Hour menu and the service was great. Must try!
google avatar

Kel M.

Yelp
First time at Salt and Lime, and Rudy was an ideal server! He offered excellent recommendations after learning my preferences. He stopped by at just the right times, and was very thoughtful about the timing of my dishes coming out. Each item arrived very promptly! ‍The happy hour margarita was tasty. I liked the salted rim. The salt is super fine with a spice in it. Yum! The Roasted Vegetable Salad was amazing! The sweet potato is perfectly cooked. The fresh tomatoes and olives balance the tasty dressing, perfectly, the cilantro micro greens heighten the flavor of the dish. The quinoa and crunchy onions provide excellent texture. This is a winner!! I also enjoyed the asparagus taco! The char, with pepitos, and sweet potato add sweet, smoky flavor. The light of sunset enhanced the ambiance of this cute corner spot. I look forward to returning.

Yelp
Hands down the best quality food in SoCal. The price was worth it. Walking distance from the water as well, this place is a gem! I have had many tacos, birria, etc. this was by far one of the best. They definitely have someone special working in that kitchen. An absolute gem. We got the Quesobirria which was like a shredded meat quesadilla taco. We got the carne taco, fish, chicken and the quesadilla with bone marrow. Chefs kiss to all of it! Pricey, but worth every Penny! The tree in the center of the room reminded me of Cocina 35. Very pretty.
google avatar

Che B.

Yelp
I can't decide whether to laugh or cry...because I haven't been here yet. This place is amazingly good. Great service even better food. The music is on point and makes the atmosphere explode. Best tacos I have had in a long time. This place is a must try!!! Feels like you are in your patio at home. Super delicious.
google avatar

Kat N.

Yelp
The place was super cute and the decor was cute. Won Tostada was my favorite. The chips and guac was good had an oil on it. I am really disappointed with the popcorn shrimp. It was a beer batter so it wasn't really crunchy and the only thing that was flavorful about. It was the sauce that they drizzled on top. The esquites was also good.. The server was nice but at one point it got really busy and we were a little forgotten.
google avatar

Larion L.

Yelp
Walked in on Sat evening without reservation. Ordered a lot of stuff rom the menu and everything was pretty good. Very nice interior and fun music on the background.
google avatar

Alden K.

Yelp
Quesabirria was okay, not enough flavor. The birria side was also bland. But it was very nicely put together with high quality ingredients. Taco Mi-Rey was tastier and colorful. If I lived close, I would order this again. The atmosphere was nice. Played a mix of newer songs with some mariachi music as well. The server was very friendly and competent. I don't live here, so I'll never be back.
google avatar

Kristen Y.

Yelp
Unique flavors that blend together beautifully. Loved all the different sauces and salsas. Our server was friendly and attentive.
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Great ambience and food was delicious! Service was mediocre, but food was great so made up for it. Just make sure to order everything at once because it's hard to get server's attention after they leave your table lol
google avatar

Kayla M.

Yelp
Salt and Lime is a modern Mexican restaurant located in Del Mar. The restaurant was busy and the music was a bit loud, but it definitely was an exciting environment to dine at. We ordered the steak & 3 tacos. The steak was seasoned very well and super tender. The 3 tacos were all good but I thought the birria was the best of all of them! Both my husband and I really enjoyed our meals. The service was great here & we'd definitely consider coming back in the future. Street parking.
google avatar

Sabrina L.

Yelp
Great location and beach city setup inside. Came here with party of three on Thursday 6pm, got super lucky on the street parking and got seated immediately. The welcome on the house chips is fresh and crispy. And the taco ( Baja fish) one is 5 star, but the shrimp taco was disappointing (2 star). Highly recommended the lava cake with vanilla ice cream, great texture and freshly baked, not super sweet. Overall service is good, fast refill water, friendly waiters, only unhappy experience in waiting for the paper print out receipt. Definitely great place for friends gathering , a little on the noisy side.
google avatar

Jeff K.

Yelp
Service is incredible. They were very accommodating with cooking a special kids chicken bowl for our toddler. Knowledgeable with food sensitivity gluten, dairy etc. They serve you with a fresh plate of chips and salsa as soon as you sit down. Great place!
google avatar

Erika B.

Yelp
The restaurant looks very nice & is an easy walk from the beach. Our server checked on us a decent number of times and was cordial. As for food, aside from the complimentary chips that were pretty good & seasoned, it didn't really live up to the price. My shrimp would've been better had it been lightly fried rather than a deep fry, which made the shrimp pretty firm. The sauce was good but not exceptional. I considered tacos, but since they do not do Taco Tuesday specials, paying $9-12 per taco (very small) wasn't very enticing when there's so many options in San Diego. I enjoyed my food enough to finish it, but not enough to re-order it. Definitely feels like a place that gets to charge extra because of the real estate rather than quality or portions. It was alright.
google avatar

Annie D.

Yelp
Stopped by for dinner on a rainy Sunday night. We didn't want to wait for a table so sat at the bar. Upscale Mexican fare with Tulum vibes. Food presentation was top notch. The bartender who was also the manager who was also our server since we sat at the bar provided exceptional service and also very personable. Overall we had a nice time and would return. What we ordered: Rosa Margarita - 5/5 Queso Fundido + steak chicharron - 5/5 Quesobirria - 5/5 comes with consommé Mi-Rey - Shrimp 5/5 Pollo Al Pastor - 3/5 dry Baja fish - 3.5/5

Yelp
Salt + Lime is definitely trying to appeal to the IG masses: cute neon signs, fake floral decorations overlooking the ocean and a cocktail are very instagrammable. But the biggest irony is that for a place with salt and lime in its name, most of the food was lacking either! The Baja fish tacos were dry and flavorless and the guacamole was just mashed avocado without anything else (how about fresh tomato, cilantro, or dare I suggest, a squeeze of lime?!) The one thing that actually tasted the best was our son's chicken quesadilla. However, while it was supposed to be a "kids quesadilla", it was enormous! I mean, literally it must have been 2 giant tortillas plus a massive plate of rice and beans. I guess for $17 it was certainly enough food but the portions were mismatched - our tacos were small and expensive while his plate was huge and expensive. We spent over $100 on 3 of us (one of whom is a child) with no alcohol purchases. I'm willing to spend good money for great food but this place was just expensive and bland - Mexican food pared-down for the Caucasian elite of Del Mar.

I'm honestly a bit surprised this place is so highly rated. The ambience and service were good, but the food was really lack luster. It seemed like everything was just severely under seasoned, no salt no spice, and didn't taste very authentic. I went during happy hour so luckily I didn't have to pay full price on the items I ordered, if I did I would've been even more disappointed. The asada taco was not good, the steak was dry and unseasoned. The chicken Al pastor taco was just ok. Even the guac lacked flavor. The only saving grace was the churros, those were some of the best I've ever had. I probably wouldn't return based on all of the other items I had unfortunately.
