Where to Find Bright Bowls of Ceviche in Portland

"A low-key hidden gem in a neighborhood full of under-sung treasures. Salt & Pepper (no relation to the Peruvian cart of the same name also on this list) is accessed through a stairway inside the Mexican grocery El Campesino. Behind the modest lunch counter is a kitchen crafting phenomenal Peruvian staples like tallarin verde (spinach and basil pesto pasta topped with steak), cau cau beef stew, and of course spicy, citrusy ceviche made with market-fresh fish. Beverages include Peruvian sodas, purple corn and cinnamon chicha morada, and a creamy horchata." - Maya MacEvoy, Nathan Williams

The Best Restaurants and Bars in Portland’s Foster-Powell - Eater Portland

"Inside the small-but-amply-stocked El Campesino grocery lies the unassuming Salt & Pepper, unaffiliated with the popular Southeast Belmont cart of the same name. A short flight of stairs leads up to a sparse dining area, where the Peruvian and Mexican food — each in their own menus rather than Mexican-Peruvian fusion — is the focus. Citrus-drenched ceviche is simply but tastefully presented alongside hearty sides of potato and corn, an entrée on its own or a shared opener to one of the richly seasoned beef dishes like seco norteño or the cau cau tripe stew." - Nathan Williams, Janey Wong

Where to Find Jaw-Dropping Peruvian Food in Portland and Beyond

"Foster-Powell’s Salt & Pepper is practically hiding in plain sight, up a short staircase inside El Campesino, a Latin American grocer that has a solid selection of Peruvian products. It’s ok to ignore the Mexican part of the menu and concentrate on dishes like sudado con mariscos, a tomato-based seafood stew served with yuca and rice, or cau cau, an Afro-Peruvian tripe stew that’s lesser seen at local restaurants." - Krista Garcia

Just started working next door recently and have been coming here quite often! The market is awesome and the restaurant is delicious! The lomo saltado is so good so is the purple corn drink and the cookies with dulce de leche!! Also photo was after I ate some already, came with good portions.

Salt and pepper restaurant is one of the hidden gems, and THE best meal of 2024. What it’s lacking an atmosphere is totally made up by amazing Peruvian cuisine. I had the leg of lamb. We ordered the picarones, delightful Peruvian donuts. And we had a passionfruit beverage that was out of this world. We’ve traveled a lot in Mexico and Salt and Pepper reminds me of the hidden gems of very delicious food: short on fancy decorations, and atmosphere, but incredibly delicious foods that are not part of American cuisine in a surprise and delight to the Tongue.

We recently noticed a place right next to Powell Seafood, a spot we’ve frequented for years, so we decided to check it out. The entrance to the restaurant is up the stairs to the left at the back of the parking lot, but you can also enter through the supermarket on the left-hand side. We tried the Lomo Saltado and Tallarin Verde. The meat in both dishes was fresh. The chicken breast was a bit tough and hard to cut, but the beef was very tender and plentiful. Both dishes were generously portioned and delicious. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Next time, we’re looking forward to trying the Mexican dishes!

Dont sleep on this hidden gem! True definition of a hard to find, mom and pop, delicious hole in the wall type of place. Hidden in the upstairs room of the Mexican minimart, El Campesino PDX. This Peruvian place has the best food out side of Peru, according to my husband! I got the Arroz Con Pollo- the chicken was so perfectly cooked and the rice was so amazing! The blended cilantro gave a flavor very similar to Indian palak paneer while still being it's own distinct dish. The cheese potatoes were so soft and wonderful! My husband chose the Lomo Saltado which was well flavored and good portion sized. He had the same dish in Peru and said it was definitely on an equal footing! Our child got Tallarin Saltado with chicken and that was a great noodle dish! Definitely big enough for 2 people to share so they have another serving for lunch tomorrow! We also got an order of Picarones which were so amazing! Such great natural sweetness of the sweet potato and that fig syrup was the perfect compliment! This is also one of the few places to find Inca Cola- which is basically bubble gum flavored soda- and a great treat to find!

Picked up catered food for a wedding. It was amazing! The place is soooooo clean. Husband and wife team work so hard to make everything perfect. So happy we found you. Waaay better than any Peruvian restaurant in the area. Cookies and cheesecake are delicious. Lomo is super delicious and full of tender steak. Excellent customer service.

This is our 3rd time visiting Salt&Pepper and it was great! If I could give 10 stars I definitely would. The owners are profesional and super kind. The food quality is consistently outstanding, exceeding my expectations every time. I always go for the "Ceviche mixto" and OMG! As a Mexican, I recognize the best Ceviche is from Peru. My husband has tried 3 different dishes and he is very impressed about the delicious flavors too. They also offer Mexican food like "Tacos al Pastor" which my kids have everytime we come, they are also de-lee-shus! The prices are fairly reasonable. And lets not forget about their desserts, I'm inlove with the alfajores😋 10 out of 10!

They would've received a 5 star from me but considering where is located I'm going for a 4. And also the place needs some work! The owners are great and even though they are from Mexico I can tell you it felt like I was trying my mom's recipes for the Peruvian dishes. They were amazing! Thank you for the great food.
