Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate Last Week in the San Francisco Bay Area - Eater SF

"I believe in celebrating triumphs (even the small ones) with treats, and a recent, particular occasion called for cookies. I’d been following Salty Sweet on Instagram for who knows how long, and after exchanging baking advice and pleasantries over social media, it finally felt like the right time to splurge on a present for myself: the Greatest Hits Gift Box (Vol. 1) of cookies. It arrived promptly on my doorstep with two cookies of each flavor: chocolate chip, caramel crunch (the favorite), oatmeal raisin, sprinkles, and double chocolate. The cookies were the perfect level of sweetness for my tastes, a nice crust-to-gooey center ratio, with a lovely, salty punch of flaky finishing salt — fitting, given the name of the bakery. I’m now a fan and am determined to make up more special occasions to celebrate with cookies." - Eater Staff

Really unique but intriguing store. Alot to choose from and very friendly staff.

This place is so cute! The owner has clearly worked hard on this little shop! I got some cozy socks, and some stickers that are very good quality!

Google
Amazing little shop with something for every walk of life. Many local/small artisans create a wide array of different items that are truly unique. If you leave here empty handed, turn around and go back in, you may have missed what you were looking for! Staff was very kind and helpful, knowledgeable about the products that are stocked.

Google
Really fun, witty, and local gift shop. Plenty of memes and tongue in cheek gifts to bring a smile to your day! Also a lot of pop culture items, like Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan & The Office.

Google
I love their new location on Madison in Lakewood. Candra has such a sense of humor and the store has so many fun local maker gifts. I couldn't leave without picking up some Bubonic plague soap made by Barr's Bars!

Google
What a fun find. A great place for unique gifts.

Google
Very cool little shop with lots of goodies! There's lots of pop culture and local art and products including Cuddle Cult which is a personal fave of mine. If you need a last minute gift for someone and can't think, definitely check this shop out!

Google
Awesome spot! Big array of unique products for home decor, gifts, or daily apperal. My favorite things to get from here are greeting cards/postcards and beauty items. Everything in the store is some type of local, small-artisan, or limited run product so you are sure to make a purchase you feel good about. Good mix of prices with high end items and affordable trinkets. It's like Etsy, but as a real store front :)

Yelp
Very cool stuff. I love the creativity and use of local artists. Staff is friendly and pricing good.

Yelp
So I was shopping at another store and walked past here. It looked interesting and it did not disappoint. Many items of local subjects and crafters for sale.

Yelp
Owner says she told people where to go and they were open but if you look at the pictures I took it says TBD for opening date- lack of info.

Yelp
This boutique has some of the funniest and best merchandise for gifts. The theme of the store is pretty much Ohio/Cleveland and I love it. They have shirts, hoodies, jewelry, notebooks, candles, and more! Their items are a bit pricy, but some of the things art pieces of art so I understand. Compared to other retailers who sell Ohio merchandise, I will say they are unique. You won't see their goods anywhere else. If you are looking for gifts for a die hard Ohioan or someone who left/lives out of state, this place is great.

Yelp
Salty Not Sweet is a great little boutique on West 25th. I initially came in to look for a decor gift for my cousin's new dorm room. I was excited when I saw they carried Candra Squire word art. Candra makes these great, affordable 5x7 mixed media prints called "notes to self" -- with inspiring, truthful or funny thoughts matted into a frame. They are my favorite small gifts and are always unique and special. To that note, they carry almost exclusively local and independent artists. You'll have a bit of visual overload when you enter, but just take your time to truly go through everything. I think their strong suit is their art selection. This includes prints, greeting cards, kitschy art accessories, even prints of animal heads superimposed on vintage photos (I swear to god, see my photos below). Other standouts include accessories and locally oriented coasters, glassware and entertaining items. Same goes for CLE t-shirts-- there are sooo many in diverse sizes. Don't ask me which t-shirt brand is. There are so many t-shirt brands in Cleveland, I cannot even keep track at this point (they all blur together after a while). Overall, if you need any type of small/large gift, or have a "what on earth should I buy this person?" on your list, you can probably find a great option in here.

Yelp
Awesome shop in the heart of Ohio City with so many unique gifts - candles, coasters, shirts, etc. I could have spent hours in there!

Yelp
Still in love with SnS! I came in today to grab a few gifts for peeps on my list and I spent twice the time I wanted to just because I couldn't stop looking at all the goodies! First off, I wanted to buy like 16 self gifts, including but not limited to: kitchsy, handmade aprons, cute dresses, antique-y necklaces, Cleveland-centric everything, homemade soy candles, soaps and more. Although I swore I wasn't there to self-gift, I couldn't help but grab myself this sweet-ass ring made from an old Ohio City map. Love that shiz. What makes shopping her even better is that everything is locally sourced from artists around town. You seriously can't go wrong. Especially if you're looking for one of a kind, hilarious, sarcastic greeting cards. If you haven't stopping by, we can no longer be friends. Well, that might be an over-exaggeration. But you better get there ASAP. ..now back to being a little worker elf and wrapping all my awesome gifts!

Yelp
But seriously, what are the hours? I've stopped by twice now, during the store's regularly posted business hours only to find the doors locked and a "not open" sign on the door. I'm I'm incredibly frustrated by this. I want to support local businesses but it's hard to do when your business hours are just on a whim.

Yelp
The storefront may read Salty Not Sweet, but this place gave me serious toothache (it's so sweet, yo). If you need a gift of any kind, I can pretty much guarantee you'll find something here that fits the bill. I spied everything from locally made jewelry and tees, to hilarious greeting cards, a handful of cute baby items, glasses, soaps, candles, and oh so much more. If I had more room in my carry on, I probably would have left with a boatload of goodies. The staff is welcoming without being stalky and is happy to answer any questions about their special selection. Salty Not Sweet is a super fantastic place to peruse some awesome local gifts.

Yelp
Salty Not Sweet is a great place to stop and shop for Cleveland and Ohio goodies! Located a short walk from the West Side Market, although I suggest browsing here after because you might not have money left over for your groceries. I found this to be a great little shop for myself or to buy gifts for others. There's map necklaces and rings, Ohio printed shirts and bags, state coasters and even clothes for the baby! There's more than that, even, but you'll just have to check it out for yourself to see what's there.

Yelp
Such an eclectic and cute store. Perfect place to find gifts for everyone, including yourself. It's obvious the owner works hard to curate a unique and entertaining lot of handmade goods. Tip: follow them on Instagram to keep up with their store hours.

Yelp
I love this boutique! I could easily spend $200 here at any given time. This is a fantastic place to buy gifts for yourself or those that love Cleveland and Ohio. You can buy anything from candles, jewelry and t-shirts to posters, sayings and bags. The playlists are always spot on too! Make sure you check this place out next time you're on W 25th!

Yelp
For locally-made finds, this is your store. Salty Not Sweet is a great shop chock-full of t-shirts, jewelry, greeting cards, and housewares - all made locally! Everything is really cute, and the prices are totally reasonable. My only gripe? The employee working wasn't really very helpful. I wanted some Ohio coasters, and I wanted one of the variety bunches - not all the same one. The lady told me they had them, but there just weren't any available. I asked if I could just create my own bunch, but she flat-out refused. And then when we got ready to pay, my friend asked to pay with his Square account - you know, since there was a sign saying they accepted Square payments. The lady said she was the only employee without an iPhone and that she didn't have Square. Even though this particular employee wasn't all that great, you should still check out all the great stuff at Salty Not Sweet!

Yelp
This is a super cute, locally made shop. So many cute hand made gifts. We walked in after a late dinner, they were open while hosting a class. A must visit if you are in the neighborhood.

Yelp
This is a fun little shop to stop in if you're in Ohio City and or visiting the W. Side Market. While I've never purchased anything here (predominately because, while I find some of the items cute and fun, I don't feel an urgent need to add them to my personal belongings.), I do love stopping in to see what they have. If you're looking for a fun CLE inspired / made gift, I'd recommend you check out SNS. You'll be sure to find something with a CLE or a OH on it that will make your gift-receiver smile. From t-shirts to soaps, to coasters, to glassware, this shop is full of odd & end stuff. They offer a fun and interesting card selection too. Again, perfect for gift-giving. Perhaps one day I'll find myself with extra $ to burn through and actually make a purchase, until then, I'm happy to browse and admire freely...

Yelp
Felt a theme in the Ohio City area, some nice stores to BROWSE but items on the pricey side, I don't feel 30/40 t-shirts are a good deal, plus prints feel like they are at least 5-20 dollars over what one might pay. I guess it's a buyers market, i saw people not buying anything so take it for what it's worth (perhaps nothing). Wouldn't return unless there was a legit sale of some sort.

Yelp
awesome, funny, hand-made stuff. I bought a bunch of cards to mail home when i was in town for work. "cleveland: it's not that bad" Th young lady working the till was polite and charming. only down side is that nothing is exactly cheap

Yelp
An incredible place to pick up gifts for the quirky person in your life or just to grab something fun for yourself. They have a great selection of novelty items and most everything is made locally.

Yelp
My visit here started with picking up a stack of cards on a table near the entrance and laughing out loud, which always bodes well. (They were saucy cards to leave on the cars of people who park and/or drive poorly, so look out. I will get you if you're one of those people who takes up two parking spots with one car.) Anyway, they have tons of original greeting cards with attitude, some great jewelry, and quite a few Cleveland-centric items. This is a great addition to Ohio City.

Yelp
Love this place. Tons of cute knick knacks! I love all the Cleveland art, clothes and decorations. The jewelry and leather brackets always catch my eye. For Christmas I spent a fortune here on gifts for family and friends. Everyone loved their gifts. The staff here has always been super friendly and helpful. I wish I could buy almost everything in the store, but unfortunately most of the items are on the pricey side so be ready to spend that money . They have lots of recycled items for sale that are pretty awesome. Definitely worth a gander if you are in the area, be ready to spend some time and money though!

Yelp
Best place on the west side to buy local! Everything is cute and quirky, with plenty of jewelry, housewares, and assorted knickknacks. The prices are pretty competitive as well. I rounded out my Christmas shopping with some upcycled glass jewelry at $15 a piece, and picked out some reasonably priced trinkets for upcoming birthdays around $18-$25. Love being able to support Cleveland artists and craftsmen!
google avatar

Lynne B.

Yelp
Definitely salty. This store is a great place to pick up some greeting cards or other gifts made locally. The feeling of the merchandise is definitely on the snarky side - very Cleveland and very fun. I'd also say the prices are more reasonable than some other "Made in the 216" stores I've been to recently.

Yelp
Love this shop! Though the place is small, it is chockfull of lovely local handmade goodies. You definitely want to go when you have plenty of time to kill because you have to make several rounds around the shop to take everything in. If you're going to shop for a gift, make sure you have a little (or a lot!) of extra spending money because you will most certainly find a ton of things that you "have to have". I will for sure be stopping back here next time I'm in the Cleve!

Yelp
I know it's not a scent shop but the place smelled wonderful. The beautiful handmade candles and soaps capture you immediately. The interior was do random and perfect at the same time. There were necklaces in teacups, and scarves in crates. The best part was that there was something for every price range here so don't be intimidated by the boutique aspect.

Denise K.

Yelp
I have to give it a low score based on my non-experience. I expect retail businesses, even small and local ones, to abide by their posted hours. I showed up in the last 30 mins that they were supposed to be open on Tuesday and it was closed. Not just closed and she was finishing cleaning up, but no sign of anyone in sight. I needed a gift for a friend's milestone birthday this week and went somewhere else instead. I am unlikely to return based on this experience.

Yelp
salty not sweet is a cute shop with lots and lots of locally and/or handmade wares that are perfect for gift giving. special emphasis on cleveland/ohio inspired stuff but even if that's not your cup of tea, you can find modern, affordable jewelery and housewares.

Yelp
Recently, I received two birthday gifts from the store but had never visited the boutique. Because their hours are only till 6:00 it was hard for me to get to Ohio City in enough time from the east side. Luckily the other day I had a meeting in Ohio City at 6:00 which would allow me to finally visit the boutique before. I arrived at 5:40 and to my surprise it was already closed! I was so disappointed that I raced over and was not going to be able to see the shop. Luckily there was a woman inside who was rearranging some items. I knocked on the door and mouthed "are you closed"? The woman looked at me, rolled her eyes and turned around to walk away. I was appalled. I could not believe the lack of customer service. Even if the registers were closed the least she could have done was open the door and ask me to come back another time. Although I still would have been disappointed that I couldn't shop, I would have understood. Such a shame that a cute store had such horrible, horrible customer service. As a result I will never go in again and have no problems telling others of this experience.
