"Salumeria 2703 is an Italian deli located a few doors down from Menomale, introduced to Brookland in 2016. It offers a variety of cold cuts, cheeses, fresh pastas, and antipasti. Like Menomale, Salumeria 2703 will also be expanding to the new location in NoMa, Washington D.C., and will open by summer 2019." - Tierney Plumb

Google
The best kept secret deli in all of DC, the bread is out of this world apparently. My partner ordered an eggplant Parm sando and it was 10/10. They also have an assortment of grocery items including some gluten free things. This is a classic Italian deli experience tucked away in a little shop in North East DC, so unexpectedly perfect!

Bakes his bread… who does that? Massimo does! He also makes the sandwiches fresh from his own bread subway rolls. He makes his own gelato. He fresh cuts the prosciutto which at six bucks for a quarter pound is a great deal. The pasta is home made too. This place is legit. You can order for catering and with his prices, why would you bother buying the stuff yourself? Just get it ready to go. Massimo also owns the pizza place down the block so he offers a fuller array than at a usual deli. There is a lot of imported stuff Italy too. Go check it out!

Google
I love this place, and try to give them my business as often as I can. This is an Italian grocery like you’d find in Italy. Small, adorable, great quality, run by actual Italians. Their sandwiches are fantastic with fresh baked bread, and we bought the platter for our son’s christening and fed twenty people. They also have ice cream! It’s one of our only ice cream shops in the neighborhood, and I like to take my son there for a little corner store gelato on warm days. Another highlight is their “grandma style” deep dish pizza for you to bake at home, you just have to call to place the order. The store also sells wine and Italian prepared foods. Staff are friendly and helpful, so glad to have them in Brookland.

Google
Excellent little Italian grocery. If everyone got their food here their lifetime would be about 10 years longer. They have the good Italian pasta (refrigerated), wines, meats, cheeses … all the real thing. See pics.

Michael

Google
They have some delicious sandwiches. The ingredients are quality. And their bread has a nice robust flavor and softness. The crudo dandwich might be my favorite and while a simple few ingredients, they take care to get the quality right. Also, they make their own Gelato with a rotation of flavors!

Google
The sandwiches with roasted eggplant or roasted zuchini are all excellent. While I love the Italian-American delis in the area, it is nice that Salumeria 2703 provides an alternative with its Naples, Italy style sandwiches. The size of the subs was reasonable for the price so I am happy going back.

Google
Been eating at this place on and off due to convenience over 6 years. As of recently since Shakita stopped working there, the service towards myself as an Black woman had not been the same. EVERY SINGLE TIME I purchase food Im left to find something to eat it with as for some reason it’s not given. I get a salad from menomale and have to ask for a fork and dressing. The food is decent at times but the service has declined.

A beautiful gourmet Italian market with fresh made cheeses, pasta, take home meals, and fresh baked bread. Also an amazing selection of the finest Italian groceries to cook at home.

Yelp
Wonderful little sandwich shop tucked in a nook on 12th Street. Easy to miss if you're not looking for it, but what a gem when you are. The counter has a good selection of Italian meats and cheeses, and single portion foods like small lasagnas to take home and cook. I jones for a good meatball sub sometimes, and figured this was a good candidate to try out. Sooo right. Absolutely delicious homemade bread, and the meatballs were perfect. Also highly recommend the Porchetta sandwich with cooked zucchini. Along with a small but nice selection of wines, and meat/cheese platters for parties, this little place really represents more than its size implies.

Yelp
Definition of a hidden gem! Their sandwiches, gelato (we've tried almost all the flavors by now), and imported Italian goods are truly unmatched in the city. We found out about it through Menomale (just down the street) and now have a new go-to lunch spot in the neighborhood. Service is quick and flavor is so so fresh. Check it out!!

Yelp
My first time here! I live close enough, but honestly just forget it's here. It's a fantastic Italian deli and I'll be coming back! I came for fresh mozzarella and a variety of cured meats for a sandwich. I left with hot sopressata, hot capicola, and Genova salami, fresh mozzarella, and artichoke hearts. Everything was fantastic, but the marinated artichoke hearts were really the standout! It wasn't super acidic and tangy like I'm used to. It was mildly flavored and tender--yum! There were some other pickled items, plenty of Italian groceries, and some other cheeses. Please note parmigiano reggiano is a solid $15/lb! As of this review, Trader Joe's is selling the same imported cheese for $17/lb--this alone is a significant win. They serve sandwiches and some other deli items. Also plenty of desserts from cakes, frozen treats, and cannolli. Haven't had any of those, but I'll give it a go at some point.

Yelp
You're cooking pasta and realize you have no bread. It's Friday, you need bread and wine. Who you're gonna call? SALUMERIA!!! Great bread, cheese and dessert. Don't sleep On it!

Taylor W.

Yelp
Ordered three sandwiches from the NoMa location and was excited to try them given the great reviews and write-up in The Post. We got the Italian, Crudo, and Chicken Parmesan. The Italian and Crudo had pathetic amounts of meat. It was liking eating a bread sandwich. I've noticed this trend more and more where restaurants skimp on the protein, and it ruins otherwise good food. I don't know if it's a way of cutting costs or lack of quality control or carelessness, but it's disappointing and dishonest. These sandwiches aren't cheap, so the most basic expectation is that they will have an amount of meat suitable for dense bread. Subway does a better job of portioning at half the cost! If you need to cut corners to stay afloat, it's probably time to move on.

Erica E.

Yelp
Absolutely DELICIOUS sandwiches and pizzas! The bread is the star of the show - best I've ever had! We had the meatball sandwich and the sopressata sandwich - would get both again!

Megan H.

Yelp
Great place to stop in for lunch! It's strictly deli style so there is not any seating but our food was ready very fast. Very authentic Italian feel. We ordered the Italian and the chicken parmesan sandwiches. We were very impressed by the quality of the bread and other ingredients used. Very fresh and filling. We also purchased some cannoli which were some of the best shells we have had.

Brandis S.

Yelp
Wow!!! This place is the real deal. Homemade bread, fresh sliced high quality meats, and melt in your mouth mozzarella.. it doesn't get much better than this. Every time I travel, I look for a great Italian deli. I am so excited I found this place! I am not completely clear about what to call it, as the signage says something like "pizza and ice cream", but you won't miss it if you look for the gelato window facing the street. The staff (who sounded Italian) recommended I eat at a nearby park, and it was a wonderful place to enjoy my food (there are no tables in the store). I ordered 2 sandwiches, because I couldn't decide. One was prosciutto/mozz/basil/evoo, and it was ok. But the star of the show was the bufala - buffalo mozz/salami/roasted red peppers. Absolutely incredible. The bread, just wow! And the cheese was absolutely top notch also. I can't wait to try the house made pasta the next time I'm in town! These sandwiches literally made my week. Love, love, love this place!!!

Christian K.

Yelp
I wish I could give them 5 stars. If I had to recommend 1 deli in DC this would be it. This is an amazing traditional deli. I felt like a kid in a candy shop with the cannolis, traditional Italian beverages, and amazing menu. The service was great and I was recommended the prosciutto which was hand cut in front of me. 10/10, I'm going to come back and have everything on the menu.

David H.

Yelp
Great little Italian shop - sandwiches are pretty good and gelato is delicious. Same ownership as menomale next door. Will definitely return to try more! They also have dry goods to purchase.

Emily I.

Yelp
Really fantastic Italian deli. Delicious and fresh! The deli is super clean and cute. Love this place! (Their gelato and mozzarella are the real deal.) great staff too!!!

Yelp
I recently moved to D.C. from lower Manhattan, where I was spoiled with phenomenal Italian sandwiches from the likes of Pisillo Panini, Regina's Grocery, and Chipilo. My first couple months down here, I was crestfallen not to be able find anywhere for a proper panino with arugula, fresh mozz, prosciutto, sopressata, roasted reds, and balsamic glaze. Then I found Salumeria 2703 and have been going about once a week ever since. On the strength of their sandwiches, I've started to think of D.C. as home. (No exaggeration.) The sandwiches are just unbelievable - the bread, in particular, may be the best, freshest Italian bread I've had anywhere. It's got a hint of sweetness to it, and it's a little softer than the bread at the aforementioned NYC, which I really like for the way it lets the meat and cheese take center stage. And the two Italian gentlemen who work at Salumeria 2703 are just delightful. They're always incredibly kind about accommodating my off-menu sandwich orders. I hope this place stays around forever.

Donna P.

Yelp
Delicioso! Really good Italian food is life-affirming. I've had sandwiches twice at this deli and will be coming back. It's a hike for me but worth it.

Yelp
Quick Links: Deli Menu - https://salumeria2703.com/#menu The Space: Salumeria 2703 is a small space. It doesn't have seating just shelves with pantry items lining one wall and across from that is the counter with pastries and deli items. They also have a gelato station that is accessible from an outdoor window if you don't feel like going inside. The Service: The service was alright. When I walked in with my roommates, the two workers seemed annoyed that people came in. Then when I ordered my sandwich, my roommate mentioned that the girl making it rolled her eyes when I ordered. So, not sure if it was me or if they were just having a bad day. The Food/Drink: The food options are pretty standard for a grab and go Italian deli. I got the salmone sandwich ($13), which consisted of tomatoes, ricotta, and a generous amount of Atlantic smoked salmon. I would definitely get this sandwich again. I also got a pint of the strawberry limoncello gelato ($15) and although the cashier warned me that it was more lemon than strawberry, I was disappointed to see that the strawberry was pretty much nonexistent. However, it was still delicious and I would go back to get other flavors. There were a couple of misses keeping this place from being a 5 star but I will definitely be back to try new things.

Yelp
If you miss Europe, take the Metro to Brookland and walk to Salumeria. This small Italian deli will transport you back to Rome. The cured meats hanging from the ceiling, the wine on the shelves, and the deli menu will have you coming back for more. It's owned by nearby Menomale, a top rated pizzeria, and open for lunch and dinner. They bake Italian pastries (canoles, brownies, etc), pasta salads and an array of sandwiches. Their top seller "The Italian" is excellent coming with several meats on a hard Italian sub. Their crudo sandwich for $9.50 is really good. Note: Their sandwiches don't have as much meat on them compared to other delis like Seventh Hill or Mangialardo's. The staff are super helpful, friendly, and honest. The worker told me what was good and what wasn't the best, which is helpful and makes me trust her. If you want a good deli, venture up to Brookland, grab a sandwich, and wander the beautiful streets of Brookland.

Linda O.

Yelp
Cozy and clean, this "autentico" Italian deli (one of the co-proprietors is a native of Italy) gets a nod from me for effort and quality. Walk in this place and Europe abounds on the shelves. A relative newcomer in the deli business, it's a logical extension of Menomale, the pizzeria found a few doors away and owned by the same husband-wife team who manage this business. Both are hands-on and it shows positively. Salumeria bakes its own bread and this makes their sandwiches a cut above other competitors in the neighborhood. The selection of sammies is limited, but respectable. The refrigerated case has a variety of meats, cheeses and other prepared foods. I appreciate the cerignola olives--fat, unblemished, solid. The dry goods, sweets and booze are selectively chosen and well done. The tiramisu is made in Scilly (it's frozen and shipped here) and is a favorite of mine. While the majority of items come from Italy, there are products from other Western and Eastern European nations too. "Continuate cosi", Maria and Ettore.

Hannah H.

Yelp
Salumeria 2703 is probably the cutest little Italian market that I've ever seen! Located in the Brookland 'hood, this market is owned by Menomale owners, Ettore and Maria Rusciano. The cases hold marinated and roasted veggies (such as oyster mushrooms, zucchini, eggplant, and olives), cold cuts, cheeses (they also have housemade mozzarella), housemade pastas, and housemade sauces (marinara, alfredo, and pesto). There are also shelves that have imported olive oil, cookies, flour, jams, vinegar, and beverages. Baskets are available to place items for purchase. When we walked in, there was freshly-baked bread, so we had to get one of those (make sure you consume this right away; sop it with the lasagna sauce!). We also purchased two bags of the housemade fettuccine, the housemade alfredo sauce, and the housemade lasagnas (meat and spinach). The lasagnas are quick to heat, as it's just at 375 and 20 minutes (I cooked it longer for 40 minutes) - both were super delicious, as they were creamy, perfect sheets of lasagna pasta, seasoned sausages, and yummy spinach and ricotta combo! I wished that they served to-order sammies or pasta meals, but note that this place is just for you to stop-by after work to grab a few things to whip up a good meal at home. There isn't much room to move around as it is a small market, but it's adorable to look around. I'd love to come back and pick-up some of their meats and cheeses, as well as try out their pesto sauce. Limited free parking along 12th. +local Italian market +delicious to-go lasagnas! +meats, cheeses, and housemade pastas and sauces +housemade mozzarella available +limited free parking along 12th

Yelp
Small Italian deli with limited pantry items. I have only purchased sandwiches here and has to be one of the best in DC. The bread itself could be its own meal. So pillowy and fresh. I have only tried the Mediterranean sandwich. The olive oil they use for the sandwich tastes like they just pressed it. So good!

Jeni K.

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches and a nice wine selection, plus lots of cool European grocery items you won't find in any other local stores. The prosciutto sandwich is my personal fave!

Cornelius-Carla W.

Yelp
Food was delivered by Uber Eats. The Italian sandwich was perfect. The bread was very fresh and the ingredients were plentiful.

George D.

Yelp
Fantastico! A quaint little Italian deli in Brookland next to some of the best pizza in the city. I had seen this place some time ago (years now I think), but never really bothered to visit. I naturally went for one of their sandwiches. After a single bite I knew this sandwich was outstanding. Freshly made bread onsite with crispy exterior and chewy interior. Quality ingredients. It sings of goodness. Have yourself one too, you won't be disappointed.

Rob E.

Yelp
They weren't the friendliest. And when I came here to buy one pepperoni stick I didn't expect to pay $10 for one. This place is robbing people blind and it's not nice. Pepperoni isn't even an import as it's not an Italian salami. I fee so cheated.

G M.

Yelp
Their porchetta sandwich is one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. And I love sandwiches! Consistent quality and service.

Chelsea S.

Yelp
Truly excellent sandwiches. Their shop itself doesn't sell much and could offer more variety but their sandwiches are top notch. I dream about the Mortadella and Ricotta sandwich. Bread is incredible.

Michael K.

Yelp
The sandwiches and deli are great. An absolute gem if you are in the neighborhood if you are looking for a filling sandwich on fresh bread or fresh cut Prosciutto.

Claire W.

Yelp
A delightful little Italian deli in Brookland, about a 7-min walk from the Rhode Island Ave metro station. The bread, which is made in-house daily, is well made with a nice crunchy exterior and soft, bouncy interior. Their menu is extensive enough where you're guaranteed to find something you'll like and interested in trying the next time. My only gripe - and the main reason for the deduction in stars - is they skimp on the meat. For the price point and compared to other sandwich shops, the filling to break ratio is skewed a little too heavily towards bread.

Evan P.

Yelp
What a gem! This is the only place that I know of that offers fresh, authentic Italian goods. Between the wines, pastas, sauces, and desserts you cannot go wrong! We really enjoyed the cannolis, which rivaled Boston's famed North End cannoli shops. The tiramisu was also very tasty. Highly recommend swinging by menamole next door for a meal and then visiting Salumeria for dessert!

Victoria Y.

Yelp
After dinner at Menomale, my fiancé and I walked over to grab some Italian desserts! While the market is small, it is PACKED with Italian goodies and premade food. They had lasagna, pasta, cured meats and cheeses, and much more. After exploring the shop, we settled on some cannolis and a tiramisu. The staff member helping us was really kind and also, for their cannolis, they fill it in the spot so you're guaranteed to end up with a crunchy shell! Our tiramisu was still frozen when we got home but honestly, we still ate it like that haha. If you're in the area, you should definitely pick up some delicious desserts! I'll need to come back to grab some of their sandwiches and that lasagna! I'm still dreaming of those cannolis so you know I'll be back!

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
I came in to pick up a sammie on a Sunday around noon. There were so many interesting things inside! On the suggestion of the guy behind the counter, I got the pesto sandwich, which was a caprese sandwich with pesto. My only complaint was the price - $13 for a caprese seemed steep. But of course, it was crazy delicious. The mozzerella was soooo flavorful and fresh, not like what you get at the grocery store. The bread was this perfect chewy but hard exterior that's hard to find outside the NJ/PHL/ NYC area, and held up to the pesto. I've also had their frozen eggplant parmigiana meal which was dynamite. So rich and creamy and tastes fresh even though it was frozen. A great place to stop if you don't know what to do for dinner.

Asa L.

Yelp
Menomale is my favorite restaurant in the world. I've been to Italy several times, and somehow Menomale still has the best, most authentic pizza I've ever had. The sauce. I've asked before if I could buy it in bulk and was rebuffed. So when I found out the owners were opening a deli... RIP me. Prayers answered. I went today and my wildly high expectations were met. So many meats (imported and local), sauces and cheeses that are made fresh, in house. I spoke with the owner and he was very informative and friendly. I asked to buy a certain amount of the fresh mozzarella and he asked if I was planning on eating it today. When I told him "not all of it" he suggested that I buy a smaller amount, as it's not so good after a day or two. I always appreciate someone giving me helpful advice when it's at the expense of their own bottom line. And that sauce, I can finally buy it by the tub full. And I did. And I will.

Lilah S.

Yelp
The sandwiches were very good although a bit pricey! I loved that the guy working there got out an onion and sliced it while making our sandwiches, very fresh ingredients! It did take awhile to make the sandwiches a la minute but they were very good. The bread and giardiniera were delicious.

Aymon F.

Yelp
The sandwich is amazing thanks to their amazing bread. I ordered three sandwiches from them at once because of the reviews and was not disappointed: prosciutto, italian, and sopressata. They are carefully crafted, with just the right amount of basil on the prosciutto sandwich, just the right amount of dressing on the italian. It's the kind of food that you feel yourself absent-mindedly nodding to because each bite is so delicious. I ate one half of each sandwich in one sitting, and I am sooo tempted to eat another, and can't even decide which one I would choose because they're all so good and god am I gonna eat three sandwiches right now?

Brandon B.

Yelp
I'm so happy decent places are coming to Brentwood! Keep them coming! Note: I only came for dessert. The woman at the front was so helpful walking us through what desserts they had and gave us tips about what was good for the day. We ended up with tiramisu and an apricot filled doughnut. The tiramisu was a bit frozen so we let it thaw out at home but it was tasty for the cost and availability! Will definitely be coming back for some sandwiches.

Abby K.

Yelp
Excellent & authentic Italian sandwiches. The provolone is to die for..the sharp provolone cheese combined with marinated zucchini is an out of this world flavor combination. Additionally, if you're looking for a sweet treat their homemade biscottis are just the perfect choice - tasty and not overly sweet!!

Matt B.

Yelp
This place is dope. The in-house bread is delicious. The eggplant parm is the best I've had since leaving New York, and the provolone sandwich is also delectable. Sandwiches are well seasoned and the ingredients are excellent.

Rachel L.

Yelp
I happened upon this store & deli on UberEats and took a chance on it. I got the pesto, the salmon, and the cannolis. Everything is so good. The cannolis were really generous portions (3 for $8) and the hoagies are delicious. The bread is so good. They used a generous portion of each ingredient. The hoagies are pretty simple so the high quality ingredients really standout. Everything was delicious and well priced. I'm excited to visit the shop soon to check out the market side and try their pastas.

Dwight G.

Yelp
Good selection of fresh meats, pastas, sauces, dry and canned goods. Small italian grocery store with great selection of everything you need to make an authentic Italian meal.

James C.

Yelp
This sandwich joint stands head and shoulders above the rest due to its phenomenal bread. An often overlooked part of the sandwich, it is truly a star even competing with their great quality salamis. The bread had a wonderful spongy quality that was a great contrast to its cornmeal laden crisp exterior.

MD Expert R.

Yelp
I hade one dessert (limoncello) and it was great. However, the items are overpriced. Some of the dessert that were advertised on the internet were not available. Disappointing.

Susan C.

Yelp
fantastic sandwiches, including the bread, which is often where a good sandwich loses its way.

Dawn S.

Yelp
This little Italian deli is awesome. The sandwiches they make are super simple, but still SOOOO good. I think it has a lot to do with the quality of the ingredients, which are all imported from Italy (except for the bread, which I'm pretty sure is made in-house!). I've tried the sopressata, prosciutto and salami sandwiches and loved them all. The shop also sells readymade meals (like lasagna and gnocchi), desserts (like tiramisu), and lots of imported goodies (like panettone, jarred sauces, etc.). Everything looks really authentic. The guy behind the counter is always really nice too. I just wish they took electronic tips! You can pay with card, but there's no function to reward the good service if you don't have cash!

Rebecca C.

Yelp
Boyfriend and I stopped in here because I was craving a sandwich. We ordered a sopresetta with grilled eggplant and some sort of sharp cheese and I think it was prosciutto and grilled zuchhini and a lighter cheese. The homemade bread is divine. I would return simply for the bread! Both sandwiches were so delicious. $10 for a sandwich though but worth it and I could tell the ingredients were high quality. Will return! New fan of this place!

Jason B.

Yelp
Sandwich was outstanding. The employee made a great sandwich, really good. If that same employee smiled once or engaged in just a semblance of conversation, the little store would not have felt like a confessional after a bachelor party. And seriously, turn the radio down. Yelling my order was ridiculous. This is the problem I have with owners of restaurants. They'll show up if Guy Fieri is stopping by but if not, they're gone. I don't think you would have appreciated your employee treating a customer like a chipped canoli shell. And if the person making the sandwich was the owner, no wonder why the place was empty.

Pappy P.

Yelp
Ordered two pastiera's (Easter Cakes - as they just newly advertised) and agreed on a time for pickup on Saturday. Drove all the way downtown to find that no pastiera's were waiting for me, and even worse, next to my name on their orders list was written "2 - pastry mix" (SMH!). What the Hell is that?! All I got was the typical "Sorry", and then I was told that they would make them for me and have them ready first thing and EARLY on Easter morning...at 11:00am (S-M-H!!!).

Helle B.

Yelp
Walked in wasn't greeted. At all. Stood inside for about 3 minutes and still no acknowledgement. There were only 2 other ppl inside. Won't be back

Christine M.

Yelp
Great little spot for authentic Italian subs! The salami sandwich was very good and my roommate loved the Porchetta with fresh mozzarella. Will be frequenting this place often!!

Suzy F.

Yelp
Great place with Italian sandwiches, friendly staff and owners, homemade pastas, imported items from Italy. Big thumbs up!

Matt P.

Yelp
A must stop! The sandwiches here are phenomenal! Get one of everything! Their fresh baked bread and quality meats are all the BEST in the area without a doubt.

Sue C.

Yelp
We found this place just by driving by. My husband wanted to have an Argentine cold-cut sandwich, but couldn't find a place. So when we saw this place, we stopped. WOW! He wanted to buy the whole store!!! He bought a salami, prosciutto and fresh mozzarella sandwich on freshly made bread!! There was fresh EVERYTHING! The pasta, the cheese...everything looked delish!! We will definitely come back when we visit D.C.
