We stumbled upon Salumeria Italiana while just walking past in Boston’s North End on our way to the airport, and decided to grab a quick bite. We walked in and waited in line to order a sandwich for the road. This longstanding spot (open since 1962) feels like a true slice of Italy in the city, and it was the perfect pre-flight fuel.
ATMOSPHERE:
This cozy, corner-store vibe is spot-on for a classic Italian deli in Boston’s historic North End think narrow aisles packed with shelves of gourmet goods, glass cases displaying fresh cheeses and salumi, and a bustling, no-frills setup that seats maybe a handful at a small counter if you’re lucky (though it’s mostly takeout). The decor is simple and authentic, with that old-world charm: tiled floors, product displays everywhere, and the aroma of cured meats and olive oils filling the air. It’s compact (fitting 10-15 people comfortably), with a casual, neighborhood feel that’s lively during lunch rushes but never overwhelming. Perfect for a quick stop in Little Italy.
MENU:
The focus is on high-quality Italian imports like salumi (cured meats), cheeses, olive oils, vinegars, pastas, tomatoes and sauces, olives, rice, grains, pantry staples, and desserts. They also shine with made-to-order panini sandwiches around $12-13, including classics like La Donna (prosciutto, mozzarella, tomato, basil), the Original (mixed meats, provolone, muffaletta spread), and heartier options like porchetta or tuna. Add-ons like olives or spreads round it out no full meals, but ideal for gourmet grab-and-go.
FOOD:
Panino alla Porchetta
At $12.99, this was an absolute steal and the star of our quick visit. Tender, herb-roasted pork (porchetta) sliced thin and piled high on fresh, crusty bread with just the right amount of seasoning juicy, flavorful, and not overly greasy, with that perfect balance of crispy skin and melt-in-your-mouth meat. It held up great for travel, staying fresh and satisfying without falling apart. An amazing sammie that rivals the best we’ve had in Italy; if you’re a fan of authentic Italian flavors, this is a must-try and easily one of Boston’s top sandwiches.
SERVICE:
Minimal wait, and we were helped right away on a weekday. The staff were great super friendly, efficient, and knowledgeable about their products, whipping up our sandwich in minutes with a smile.
TIPS:
No seating inside, so plan for takeout great for picnics, flights, or eating on the go. Parking in the North End can be tricky (street only, often crowded), so walk, use public transit, or rideshare if possible. They’re open Monday-Saturday from 9am-6pm (closed Sundays), and items can sell out, so go early for the freshest selection. Customize your sandwich with add-ons like hot peppers or vinegar for extra kick, and browse the shelves for take-home treats.
OVERALL:
Was it worth the stop? Absolutely. Salumeria Italiana delivers authentic Italian deli excellence with standout sandwiches and a genuine North End vibe that’s pure Boston charm. We’ll be back for more porchetta next time we’re in town.
