"This legacy Italian store has been a North End mainstay since its opening in 1962. Here you’ll be teleported to Italy, where a large variety of pantry goods, olive oils, cheeses, and cured meats are available." - Valerie Li Stack

Classic Italian gourmet shop. The smell is amazing. I won’t comment on the staff because honestly the tourists that come in there are not the friendliest. As for as the food, it’s incredible. The imports are bit pricey but the sandwiches are very great price for the quality and the taste. The Italian bread is fantastic. I highly recommend.

Google
Love this store! Wonderful imported meats & cheeses. Oils and all things Italy! 🇮🇹 if you are.gluten free, grab the GF pasta Or pasta MADE IN ITALY!! You can eat it! I’ve been to Italy and could eat everything there, and I’m gluten intolerant!! But flour made in Italy. 🇮🇹

Awesome selection of delicatessen cheese and deli meats, fresh bread, great selection of imported Italian groceries. We got yummy sandwiches with prosciutto. Bought a panettone and chocolate too

Google
Cool place to visit when visiting the north end if you like homemade authentic Italian cold cuts and good cheeses. I’ve been here numerous times and really enjoy this place.

Google
I got the Donna panini, and it was delicious! The prosciutto and mozzarella were really good on there, and everybody in the store was really nice.

Google
Hands down best deli sub you’ll ever have. My lil brother and I went not just once but had to come back literally two hours later to get another sub. Very authentic. Staff was friendly (remember it’s the east coast). I would come back daily if I could 😍

Google
This place is amazing. One of the employees helped me find the perfect olive and cheese pairing.

Yummmm! This hidden gem in the North End is the perfect sandwich stop. The people that run it are just fantastic and I love coming here.

Yelp
Delicious and authentic, serving the freshest bread around! We ordered a prosciutto & rrp, and an Italian grinder, yummy. Highly recommend both. Parking is a pain though, so plan on circling the area a few times.

Yelp
Authentic Can't go to The North End without visiting this local Italian culinary institution! Classic salumeria. Love their big round mortadella, thinly sliced...this time both the pistachio variety, and a black truffle one. Perfect! Located a couple of minutes walk from the Paul Revere House, this Italian institution stocks the best of olive oils, vinegars, pastas, and other specialty products. Service is excellent where the knowledgeable staff has taste-tested their food offerings and gives you great recommendations. Yup, quality, freshness, and authenticity rule here. If you can't come to their retail store in Boston, check out their website which allows you to browse through their store, select what you want, and quickly and easily place an order . I have used that service several times and can attest to the extra care they provide in making sure your order gets to you quickly and safely. Great spot while walking through the north end. Thanks

Kalle G.

Yelp
We had a La Donna sandwich and it had prosciutto that melts in your mouth, fresh basil, mozzarella, tomato, and balsamic. Oh man, we stumbled on this place walking on the Freedom Trail and we are glad we stopped. It's a legit Italian sandwich/grocery. 10/10.

Mal L.

Yelp
Oof, I love this spot. I'll miss is more than anywhere else. We got an italiano almost everyday to share and it was the best. If you're into italian sandwiches I highly recommend these ones! They're also the oldest grocery store in the north end and have great products for cooking.

Yelp
I went to elementary school here... in the North End, and I have an infinite LOVE for markets. I arrived home and headed over to the North End (as is my usual M.O.) the Pizza place was closed so I wandered the streets and smelled all the deliciousness of this community. I took to Yelp to find where I could grab a sub and this place has been on my bucket list for a while now. Walking in here is like being embraced by my Ex-husband's Grandmother the accents, the quality of ingredients, and the authentic Italian feel of the place. You would think you were in Italy. I observed the locals coming in for their lunch and the Lady behind the counter chiding the young Firefighters and Police Officers for not seeing them in Mass on Sunday, it was funny. They saw me and stopped, I said: "Don't mind me, I might be a visitor today but this is my home... I went to school at the Elliot" OMG they all parted the way to the counter after that LMAO! The bread was crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle all the flavors in my panino alla porchetta were divine... in fact, I couldn't wait to eat that bad boy HA! I went around the corner and copped a squat on a stone bench in front of Paul Revere's house and ate my lunch... legs swinging back and forth - which is the universal language for Mmmm hmmm Good! Respectfully Reviewed

Yelp
Ordered three sandwiches to go and we ate them near Copp's burial ground overlooking the harbor. Of the 3, by far the most flavorful was the Original, with an assortment of salami meats, slice provolone cheese, and tapenade dripping with olive oil. So good. I tasted the caprese which was quite bland, and the Donna, which was a bit better but still fairly plain. Recommend that when you order any sandwich here that you order lots of toppings like tapenade and/or pesto. These North End sandwich shops like simpler combos so you need to insist that they slather on the good stuff!

Yelp
I stumbled on Salumeria Italiana while exploring Boston's North End. Since I could always use some Italian groceries, I decided to stop in to check it out and see if I found anything to pick up. The space itself isn't too large, but there was enough room for multiple people to browse. They seemed to have a good selection of typical Italian groceries such as olive oils, taralli, and Nutella. Additionally, they have a deli counter where you can get cold cuts, sandwiches, and cold salads. While I was there I think there was a tour group stopping since someone was walking around the store with a board filled with pieces of cheese to sample (unless that's a thing). Anyway, I had just ate so I just decided to pick up some taralli. The vibes were definitely on here - this place reminded me a lot of the Italian groceries I have at home. Service was good, everyone was friendly and really engaging with the customers. Overall, I had a good experience at Salumeria and would definitely consider returning the next time I'm in Boston.

Yelp
Yummy sandwich spot that you might not notice if you don't know to look for it! While it's not my favorite sandwich shop in the north end, it is definitely delicious and hits the spot if you're looking for a classic Italian sandwiches. Taking off one star because they do run out of ingredients sometimes, and the service isnt particularly warm (especially if you have a lot of questions or don't understand the ordering process).

Teresa C.

Yelp
Went here on a tour of the North End. Family owned for a number of generations. They serve a number of sandwiches too, which look very interesting.

Heather N.

Yelp
This was my last stop in Boston. Cute little Italian Market with a deli counter in the back. Grabbed The Original to eat on the plane. They slice the meat and make the sandwich right in front of you. Sandwich was excellent. Very similar to a muffaletta. It was packed full of meat, definitely could split with between two people and only $10.

James H.

Yelp
Great ills school Italian grocer and deli. I had a cap tear sandwich and ordered a classic for my family - while I should have requested balsamic on the classic - we were all very happy with our respective orders. Looking forward to going back someday soon. Service was friendly and good. The line moved along quickly.

Y S.

Yelp
" panino alla porchetta " Should've ordered 2 of those, 1 to take home. Fantastic deli /market in the North End.

Dennis D.

Yelp
Nice little Italian shop in the North End selling a lot of different foods. Right along the Freedom Trail. Also makes good sandwiches.

Julie A.

Yelp
We only stopped because my 5yr old's favorite thing in the world is salami. We were introduced to Geneva Salami and boy oh boy did we run out of our 1/2lb too fast! Found out they deliver out of state!!!

Alison S.

Yelp
Hands down best deli sub you'll ever have. My lil brother and I went not just once but had to come back literally two hours later to get another sub. Very authentic. Staff was friendly (remember it's the east coast) and there was a cute guy makin my sandwich. I would come back daily if I could

Brooke W.

Yelp
This was one of our stops of the Boston north end food tour (with Bobby) and it was my favorite!!!! We got the Italian sandwich and it was the best ever. All of the meats and cheeses are so so fresh!!!!! Could not recommend this place more!!!

Troy R.

Yelp
If you've dreamed about wondering the streets of Rome but can't find the time or money your in luck. The moment you step into the door you dream has come true. This hidden deli is down a small space between two building. On the left is a bakery on the right Salumeria Italiana. Once I'm the door you can choose from hand made pasta, salami and the best sandwiches around. Do yourself a favor and art this to you must visit spots.

Yelp
I don't know how I won't cry writing this review. My sister and I are local gals her in Boston, MA. Always loved and will continue to do elsewhere, getting our fresh Italian provisions. Today. Not long ago... that all changed. At the end of the ... don't speak rudely to your customers. Most importantly the ones you grew up with. You want to call my sister names like entitled, b!txh, people like her ... apparently you don't put your pants on like other women. You were degrading and disrespectful. Why why why??? We are Boston girls!!!! Sitting in a restaurant in the North End. My heart still hurts for the way we were treated. Oh well... $149 and change later. JPace here I come.

Nanci K.

Yelp
Chanced upon Salumeria Italiana during my jaunt to get to know The North End today. From the moment one enters, the sights and smells, not to mention the incredible service, transport to the best Italian shop you've been to, wherever that may have been. I ordered a La Donna Panini which was molto delizioso! They have a beautiful selection of everything from salumi & formaggio along with a variety of olives & other antipasti as well as everything necessary to make a great Italian meal. Looking forward to going again! Grazie mille Salumeria Italiana!

Yelp
AN ABSOLUTELY MUST DO. 4 & 3/4 STARS. Home of the over 200 Pound 6 Foot Hanging Cheese! They have Delicious Italian Sandwiches & other Specialty Products. Salumeria Italiana is located on Richmond St off of Hanover Street in the heart of The North End in Boston. You've got to come in here just to check out their 6 foot Auricchio Hanging Cheese that weighs more than 240 pounds. Wow what a picture! That Cheese is Bigger than Most People! LOL! They serve Ssndwiches & have Italian cold cuts, cheeses, pasta & Deli items. They also carry lots of specialty Italian products that you won't find in your regular grocery store. When we went there was only one sub roll left they were completely Sold Out We had them make that one Italian sub. They also had 1 package left of small rolls so I bought that also & some deli items & made our own sandwiches. They have several different kinds of sandwiches to choose from. Well the one sub that they made was Delicious And our own make shift sandwiches were Excellent too but not quite as Great as the Pros there do it. LOL! If you're looking for a great Italian Sandwich then you've got to check this place out! It used to be, you had to have Mega Bucks & be really Rich to have the Good Life, not anymore. The Game has changed. You've been Upgraded. Now You Can Live Like a King on a Limited Budget!

Yelp
Heard that this was THE place to go for Italian sandwiches in North End, so I specially stopped by. My friends and I split the La Donna, Original, and Panino Porchetta sandwiches. The sandwiches are sliced and made fresh right after you order, which was super cool. However, I do have to admit I wasn't completely blown away by the sandwiches. Maybe I over-hyped it in my head? The La Donna was my least favorite as it felt quite bland. The Original and Porchetta weren't bad. I think I liked the Original slightly better though, since I enjoyed the olive spread. I also was a little disappointed by the bread, which I thought was a bit tough. Overall, the sandwiches for sure weren't bad, but not sure I would add to the hype I've been seeing online.

Rick L.

Yelp
Great little market/restaurant with loads of items not found in all supermarkets. Olive selection and tuna in olive oil is remarkable. Quick service at the counter for cold cuts and hoagies.

Greg F.

Yelp
My family and I were touring the North End of Boston and it was lunch time. While trip planning months earlier, I watched an old foodie travel show from 2012, in which the host came here. He recommended, wisely I might add, to visit the deli section in the back of this amazing little Italian grocery store and get some food to go. He was totally spot on! We ended up getting two sandwiches, a La Donna and an Italiano, plus a package of mozzarella balls and olives, and a few tiny little samplings of their balsamic vinegar. Walking back to our hotel with the goodness, we ever so happily shared the feast up in our room. All of it was simply delicious and the folks in the shop were no nice and helpful. Come here and do this!

Katelynn H.

Yelp
Such delicious sandwiches ! We got the turkey & the original! The pesto in the turkey sandwich was to die for!

Tim S.

Yelp
I can't say enough about this little store. The atmosphere is right out of a Norman Rockwell painting from the 1930's. The Italian food selection is awesome, especially love the real Nutella! But the star of the show is the selection of cold cuts from Italy. You can buy them by the pound or have them make you a sandwich. The bread is freshly baked with just the right amount of chew. The meats are sliced to order and are paper thin. Today I ordered a muffuletta. Salami, cheese, and olive spread. Heaven. The staff are so patient and efficient. Love the white lab coats they wear, so professional and old world-y. Prices are very fair. My huge amazing hand crafted sandwich was less than $10 and enough for 2. Keep up the great work. *****just bought my 4th sandwich here and this time they were extremely stingy with the meat ! You need to be consistent.

Shuang Z.

Yelp
Nice Italian shop that offers a variety of different cold cut! We cut imported mortadella with pistachios! They also offer mortadella with truffles. Clean cut and great packaging. Will come back to explore other delis. The price is on the higher side tho.

Austin L.

Yelp
Great Italian grocery store with all sorts of interesting imported and homemade goodies. Expensive but there's a lot of very high quality stuff here that makes it worthwhile. I bought some olive oil, chocolate, grains, and something I hadn't even heard of before - white wine biscotti. The flavor of wine is very subtle because the alcohol evaporates when they're cooked but it was a nice treat to have for the 1st time. I didn't buy any meats or cheeses but the selection was pretty impressive just as any Italian store would be. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area.

Ben R.

Yelp
They have given me the wrong sub more than once and do not offer a helpful solution. Today I ordered a La Donna and an Italian and was given two Italian subs. When I called (it's raining outside) he said I can bring back one of them and they will give me a La Donna in exchange. I appreciate the cost of goods but a small concession for the error on their side would have been helpful. Annoying!

Bruce K.

Yelp
Shopping for dinner I could make back at the apartment, I stopped in to Salumeria Italiana in the North End and was immediately impressed. Lots and lots of canned and boxed Italian goodies but then, there's this beautiful counter of cheeses. Yummy looking stuff and so I got a nice little bit of parmesan for the pasta. And these olives won't eat themselves. And then I took a deep breath because if I'm not careful, I could spend a big pile of money here. Service was great. Yum!

Jerry M.

Yelp
What a wonderful little family owned salumeria! Here you will find speciality Italian delicatessen fare. I was in the mood for the Italian tuna salad and wow they do not disappoint here. My sandwich tasted just like I bought it at a Roman Cafeteria! They have olives, cheeses and all kinds of smoked and cured meats too. Also enjoy their sizable collection of Italian imported dry products. The staff here are super friendly and helpful, particularly Adele who made me feel welcome like family. Be sure to stop in here when you visit the north end. Highly recommend!

Brandis S.

Yelp
My part of the country is sorely lacking in Italian delis, and sometimes I dream about eating balls of amazing mozzarella. For real. Today, Salumeria Italiana made my dreams come true! Firstly, the mozzarella is very fairly priced. Each ball (which appeared to be 1/3lb maybe?) was around $3, and could be served with or without brine. I'm a brine kind of girl, so I ordered 3 balls with brine to go. The staff said the cheese would be good unrefrigerated for 3 days, which was exciting because I wouldn't have access to a fridge for several hours. The cheese was perfectly salty and creamy, with an excellent texture. I am a mozzarella purist, so I ate it plain and in all of its glory, just with a knife and fork. And I may or may not have eaten it all that same day. Really, really excellent. I also ordered a La Donna sandwich (prosciutto, mozzarella, tomatoes, basil, olive oil, and balsamic), which was great too. The bread was perfectly fresh (not the "scrape-off-the-roof-of-your-mouth" crusty kind), the prosciutto was excellent, and the overall combination of flavors really hit the spot for me. The Salumeria itself was adorable, and full of so many delicious and unique looking items. Had I not been walking all over town, I could have gone on a total shopping spree! Writing this review has made me extremely sad. Why can't I eat this well every day? Boston, I will return, and Salumeria Italiana will be my first stop when I do.

Josh H.

Yelp
I've been going to the north end for the last 15 years for the great food. About 5 year ago I was looking around for a great sandwich shop and I was told this was the best place. I have to say when you walk in you're always greeted by the nice ppl that work there. This Italian market has all your needs from fresh bread fresh olives, fresh Italian meats and etc. I got there for their Italian subs which is So if you're every in Boston and want some fresh market food this is the place to go.

Laura T.

Yelp
I've had sandwiches here before that are excellent but the one I picked up today was shoddy at best, which maybe I should have expected from how fast it was made compared to the time and care taken with previous sandwiches made here. No oregano or seasoning, no oil or vinegar I could taste and a vastly different amount of meat than previously. It was super disappointing as I went to the north end specifically to stop into the store because usually it's a great spot. Guess I'll go to Bricco from now on. Attaching a photo of what the sandwiches I've had previously looked like and they were amazing.

Spicy P.

Yelp
Nice little shop that has all the makings of a great go-to salumeria but, nothing special or amazing to write home about. Staff were all less than approachable, and really just not all that great overall. Made us feel out of place and not once were we offered a smile despite being in there for 20 minutes building up quite a tab of bread, olive oil, meats, olives and cheese. So while their offerings are staple and standard for this sort of place - the arrogant service and attitude left us unimpressed.

Nat B.

Yelp
Cute little Italian gourmet shoppe! I was clueless when it comes to all things Italian, and the employees were incredibly helpful, kind and patient in suggesting items that I need to create my Italian dishes. Highly recommend them! They're only few minutes away from the Haymarket station off the orange line.

Robert M.

Yelp
Holy crap $34 a pound for prosciutto and $23 for salami? Sorry guys love your place but I can't afford it anymore. I'm afraid I'm going to ask you to your key Maura. Turn your key!

Stephanie M.

Yelp
This place is amazing! We got a small loaf of onion bread, salami and Prosciutto. We snacked on it all day long and even went back the next day to get more. Such an authentic Italian feel and a friendly staff

Johnny G.

Yelp
Not sure what the hype is here. Growing up in the Bronx this would rate as the worst Italian market/deli around. Small, limited inventory, unfriendly service and crazy high prices topped off with a lack of authenticity or warmth. It's friendlier to shop at Italian products online.com and have it shipped to your house than it is to visit this place. Save yourself the trouble and go to a supermarket. I get it the north end rent and the changes to the neighborhood. Italian grandmothers would be very disappointed shopping there and would likely point you towards Market Basket. Yes the 40$ balsamic is good but there is plenty of real balsamic at places that show appreciation for your business.

Katie H.

Yelp
Stepping into this store feels like being back in Italy! I love the atmosphere, and they have the goods to back it up! Lots of imported items that I haven't seen since I was last in Italy, fresh baked breads, a great olive bar, and the most tempting selection of cured meats, ready to be made into a panini. I had just eaten the first time I came here and had to tell about 6 eager workers behind the counter "No, not today", but I resolved to come back. On my second visit, I got the La Donna, and it was wonderful. The bread was light, airy, and chewy. The prosciutto, basil, and mozzarella were all fresh and delicious. The drizzle of their own balsamic vinegar was the perfect touch. So simple but so delicious. The sandwiches might not be as stuffed as other subs you might find in the North End, but if you want a taste of the understated paninis you would actually find in Italy, this is the more authentic choice by far. Now if only they could offer a sandwich with prosciutto and truffle oil like my favorite paninis in Italy...I would be the happiest girl in Boston.

Ann-Marie I.

Yelp
Unfortunately I was waiting on by somebody who is very new and did not know the meats or the other daily options such as the difference between a roasted sweet pepper and a very very hot tiny tiny chilies. Used to be a fun deli to go to when I lived in Boston and now it's just a tourist trap.

Julie R.

Yelp
Fantastic customer service. Ask a question you will happily get the answer. Phenomenal bread, deli meat and cheeses. Good selection of olive oil's and other specialty items. Every time I venture to the north end, this is one 3 shops on our "must" list. Fair prices

Sam W.

Yelp
We stopped by to get stuff to make sandwiches later in then night. Everyone was friendly and what we got was AWESOME! Some of the best sandwiches we had.

BostonBestEats X.

Yelp
Unfortunately, I'm going to have to downgrade my review to 3 stars. I just attempted to buy online a $31 bottle of that balsamic vinegar I previously mentioned, and have it shipped to my Mom as a gift, but the quoted UPS ground shipping price is highway robbery: $13.72. I'll pass, thank you very much.

Elise O.

Yelp
I love their sandwiches and the staff there are so helpful! Their deli has a wide range of charcuterie and I love their olives. Anytime I'm in Boston, I always stop by!

Rick M.

Yelp
Brought me back to when I was growing up in Brooklyn ny. Real Italian products at a great price. The olive are amazingly delicious and their subs are spectacular. Kudos to Salumeria Italiana.

Brian P.

Yelp
5 stars for 'The Italiano' - what a solid sandwich! Fresh meats, cheese, bread. Not as fresh greens, but keeps from overshadowing the main ingredients. and $9! what a steal. All friendly workers that wore masks.

Josep B.

Yelp
This is one of those places that I still don't understand why it has the rating it has... I guess that because they did a really good job in ensuring it looks like a charming and authentic Italian store... Well, let's get that right: it does not... Everything they offer is highly overpriced (you can even get most of it in Whole Foods and everything will be cheaper). Ideally, you would expect to find unique Italian products you can't find easily in regular stores... well, that's not the case either... The service is ok, I wouldn't say they are super nice either... don't even try to take a pic in the store... they will complain... My opinion is that there is no reason to go there... go to Monica's Mercato and for bread go to Bricco... Better and cheaper...

Dawn C.

Yelp
We had The Original, Porchetta & Caprese sandwiches. They loved their choices but the bread was just too crusty for my liking.

Yoko S.

Yelp
I found a small Italian grocery store. They also have many varieties of meats and breads. I enjoyed looking at Italian candies, jams, pastas ( I bought a dried squid ink pasta for $7.00 ) , and olive oils !

Sterling M.

Yelp
Had an amazing lunch from here. Super friendly staff and helpful about our decisions. Fresh baked bread, delicious freshly sliced meats and cheeses. Great selection of oils and vinegars. Would definitely come here again!
