It was an amazing experience all around.
We went there looking for cold cuts to take back with us from Rome. We ordered a kilo and a half of mortadella and then asked it to be sliced thinly and vacuum sealed. Both the knowledgeable co-owner behind the counter and a friendly neighbourhood Italian fellow customer told us why slicing them in that way would not be the best idea. We took their advice and took the product in smaller blocks but not sliced, and then decided we'd love to try a selection of their cold cuts and cheese. They invited us to sit and gave us a choice of 3 price points for the apertivo, which we took the midrange one at 18 euro pp. We requested wine and Irena, the other co-owner (we think), took on what sort of values we appreciate from our wines and gave us some great recommendations. We finally decided on a glass of their Pinot Nero, whilst they walked us through the story and production steps of the 4 different cuts of meat they had on the platter as well as the 4 different cuts of cheese. Bread of varying textures and styles were provided.
Whilst there, we heard another tourist say they had the best amatriciana they had eaten in rome, which meant we really felt we had to return if able. We also saw how the gentleman behind the meat counter talked the different customers through the many different choices they had on offer. He gave serving suggestions, preparation tips, gave inspiring choices for those that didn't quite know what they wanted, and did this all whilst obviously running around a little short staffed but with a smile on his face. His almost decade long experience there shined through.
They had a platter out to try different qualities of balsamic vinegar as well as some vinegars from white grape must. Irena talked us through the different ones and helped us choose which ones we wanted as gifts or personal use. They also bubble wrapped the bottles to ensure they would make it through our flight home. I overheard they ship worldwide, so they seem quite knowledgeable on how best to transport their own products internationally.
Lastly, I wanted to talk about their integrity. We asked Irena if she could point us towards that extra virgin olive oil we hear so much about, the kind that has nuances in flavour, and is delicious enough to be drank by itself. She thought for a moment and with a sad look on her face, stated that whilst they had some olive oil in stock, the kind we were looking for they didn't have at that time, but they' be getting a shipment of soon. She could have fobbed something off and we wouldn't have known, but she respected her customers and the quality of her suggestions enough to ensure it didn't sully our experience at Volpetti.
I don't know what's in store for the place, I hear there's some staff changes happening, but whatever happens to Volpetti in the future, our visit there was magical. It's the kind of experience that makes you want to move continents just so you could have a lifestyle that lets you enjoy that experience regularly. Many thanks to the lovely duo for giving us that experience.
