14 Best Places for Shopping in Rome

"Salumeria Volpetti is fabulously stocked neighborhood delicatessen with its namesake meats. Gourmet cheeses, meat, wines, olives, pastas, and pates from all over Italy, as well as some great non-Italian finds. You'll see locals doing their regular prosciutto-and-bread runs, and you won't soon forget the smell: Volpetti has a divine and very savory aroma. Befriend the staff—they know everything about everything, and they'll even let you taste before purchase." - Erica Firpo

Recently, while in Rome, after good advice from Irene I ordered bottles of olive oil and balsamic vinegar from this store. Irene assured me that package will be delivered to my apartment in Scottsdale Arizona within a week and in good condition. I am pleased to write that the package was delivered on time and in excellent condition. Thank you.

Google
It was an amazing experience all around. We went there looking for cold cuts to take back with us from Rome. We ordered a kilo and a half of mortadella and then asked it to be sliced thinly and vacuum sealed. Both the knowledgeable co-owner behind the counter and a friendly neighbourhood Italian fellow customer told us why slicing them in that way would not be the best idea. We took their advice and took the product in smaller blocks but not sliced, and then decided we'd love to try a selection of their cold cuts and cheese. They invited us to sit and gave us a choice of 3 price points for the apertivo, which we took the midrange one at 18 euro pp. We requested wine and Irena, the other co-owner (we think), took on what sort of values we appreciate from our wines and gave us some great recommendations. We finally decided on a glass of their Pinot Nero, whilst they walked us through the story and production steps of the 4 different cuts of meat they had on the platter as well as the 4 different cuts of cheese. Bread of varying textures and styles were provided. Whilst there, we heard another tourist say they had the best amatriciana they had eaten in rome, which meant we really felt we had to return if able. We also saw how the gentleman behind the meat counter talked the different customers through the many different choices they had on offer. He gave serving suggestions, preparation tips, gave inspiring choices for those that didn't quite know what they wanted, and did this all whilst obviously running around a little short staffed but with a smile on his face. His almost decade long experience there shined through. They had a platter out to try different qualities of balsamic vinegar as well as some vinegars from white grape must. Irena talked us through the different ones and helped us choose which ones we wanted as gifts or personal use. They also bubble wrapped the bottles to ensure they would make it through our flight home. I overheard they ship worldwide, so they seem quite knowledgeable on how best to transport their own products internationally. Lastly, I wanted to talk about their integrity. We asked Irena if she could point us towards that extra virgin olive oil we hear so much about, the kind that has nuances in flavour, and is delicious enough to be drank by itself. She thought for a moment and with a sad look on her face, stated that whilst they had some olive oil in stock, the kind we were looking for they didn't have at that time, but they' be getting a shipment of soon. She could have fobbed something off and we wouldn't have known, but she respected her customers and the quality of her suggestions enough to ensure it didn't sully our experience at Volpetti. I don't know what's in store for the place, I hear there's some staff changes happening, but whatever happens to Volpetti in the future, our visit there was magical. It's the kind of experience that makes you want to move continents just so you could have a lifestyle that lets you enjoy that experience regularly. Many thanks to the lovely duo for giving us that experience.

Google
This was incredible tasting experience. The aged balsamic vinegar was the most flavorful my tastebuds have ever encountered!! Who knew that the flavors were so uniquely different? A drop of each will have you picking out your favorite. Adding to salads or to a gelato, the range will be vast. Along with the large selection of meats and cheeses and of course olives are abundant here. The staff is friendly and helpful. You’ll enjoy this family here for sure… we are hoping to enjoy their restaurant next door on another visit

That’s a SUPER place to be!!! Cozy nook with a wide choice of traditional mouthwatering Italian delicacies 😍 You can buy and take away the yummiest stuff or enjoy your lazy afternoon around a thoroughly picked up salumi and formaggi platter with a glass of Franciacorta or wine 🍷 Cannot forget the milky taste of the freshest mozzarella and burrata we had😋 Mateo, the owner and the master of the place is the most knowledgeable and the most pleasant personality! It was so nice to get to know you, my friend! Thank you for your excursion through Italian eno-gostronomic magical world 🤝 Sending you our warmest greetings and hugs from Yerevan!

Google
What a great place for some good wine and an afternoon snack. Incredible selection of charcuterie meats. The owner and his employees are very attentive, with great conversation and hospitality.

Google
If you're into some gourmet charcuterie and cheese, this is where you go. From the minute we walked in we kept getting little tastes of salami and cheese, accompanied with explanations and a smile :) The selection is unbelievable and the taste is amazing. Highly recommended stop for foodies.

Google
Great selections. Friendly service. The fried goods is worth a try it still tastes good even it’s cold so can’t imagine how good it will be if it’s hot

Google
Good olive oil. The worst employees, making jokes in italian which i cannot understand about my english accent. I felt it like racism.

Yelp
This is the deli next to the taverna. An excellent selection of wines, cheeses, and meats. The sandwiches are excellent, made with good sized portions of meat and cheese, but require a lot of patience.

Yelp
What an amazing deli/market. I have never seen the like! You can stop for a phenomenal sandwich with freshly sliced meat, cheese and bread for around five euros. Not to mention the high-end shopping. We had an amazing exploration of 5, 10 and 15 year old balsamic vinegars (10 being the best with meats and 15 - ice cream topping - sorry, not sorry) I can not say enough about this neighborhood deli but if you are here and you miss it....totally your loss! Bottom line: go, go, go!

Yelp
This store made me want to move to Italy, rent an apartment in Testaccio and shop here every day. There is so much pride here, and rightfully so. Amazing balsamics, truffle everything, cheeses and meats. Might be a small shop, but it's huge on flavor and quality. So glad to have found this thanks to an Eating Italy food tour!

Yelp
one of the best experiences I had in Italy. I entered this store and it was full of amazing food products...all sorts of meats, cheeses, calzones and what not. Locals were coming in, buying their stuff and leaving fast. It's a small store so we looked around but not speaking fluent Italian, I was a bit intimidated. Didn't want to bother anyone when they are so busy with their local customers. As I was about to leave, an older man called us over and asked us if we like to try some cheese and delicious pork....who can say no to that! Turns out it was the store's owner...the sweetest person I met in Rome! He introduced us to so many different types of cheeses and salami and the best prosciutto I've ever eaten. He was so sweet, he even packed a small picnic bag for us filled with cheese, bread and amazing salami (all free!) We ended up buying tons of gorgonzola and other cheeses and 6 bottles of brunello di montalcino (my favorite Italian wine!), the bottle that sells in LA for $75 is only 28 Euros here! They also carry an amazing Jam made out of apricots and Chianti that compliments the blue cheese perfectly! This is my favorite food store in Rome....come here for an incredible shopping experience, you will be amazed at the friendliness and generosity of the owner as well as the selection of wine, cheese and meat here.

Yelp
Though I must say it is a great store, it is also very expensive. Before you fork out tons of cash, go check out Eataly (huge all italian supermarket -almost a city) first. They have almost all the same stuff but much cheaper. That being said. It was a pleasant experience checking out this tourist hotspot. (Dare I say tourist trap?) the guys there are very friendly and helpful and will vacuum seal your purchases. (I don't think Eataly will. )

Yelp
The waiting line is crazy, took me about 20 min to get service. The server was friendly. I order the cannoli and they fill it when you order it. It was good. I went back the next day as it is the only bakery in Little Italy. I got the tiramisu cake and was great !

Yelp
Why I love Volpetti; the Food!! This family owned deli and salami house is just outside the city circle. In a residential area. Inside the 3 sons have divided the shop into different options that all work together. The meats and cheeses are some of the best I had in Italy. The also had fresh truffles (black). The sandwiches are great and reasonable priced. But the wow factor is all the hams on the wall. I kept asking how they could sell all the meat!! They will let you taste the cheese also family made. If you make it to Italy, it's worthy of a cab ride, or you can walk. If your there, the pyramid across the street is a interesting side note. Actually a burial site of the past city leaders. He wasn't allowed to be buried inside the city (than city). The gardens are really interesting!

Yelp
This was one of the stops on the Eating Italy food tour. This is also home of the most buttery prosciutto I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. I had no idea what I've been missing out on until today and how garbage the other prosciutto I've been eating has been. I can't recommend this place enough. If you're looking to bring foodie gifts back to your loved ones at home, this place is a must. You can sample just about anything (cheese, wine, balsamic vinegar, cheeses... anything) and everyone is extremely friendly. GO HERE.

Yelp
Location: Testaccio. The place: Much smaller than I expected but boy, do they pack a lot into the place. You'll find cheeses, prosciutto, salami, olive oil, balsamic (aged and not) - you name it, they have it. We are looking at top quality products as well. The goods: I tried the prosciutto di San Daniele, salame al Barolo, pecorino al tartufo and parmigiano reggiano. I don't know what to say except every single thing was delicious. To top it off, I got to do a little balsamic vinegar tasting to see the differences between the various age groups. The fellow who was there was super knowledgeable about the products and answered all our questions. Price: Very reasonable though these will depend on what you're buying. A bottle of aged balsamic for example, will cost you a lot more than a hunk of cheese. If you're a foodie, or you simply just like to eat, you have to check out this place.

Yelp
We had so much fun shopping here! My husband loves cured meats and deli items. He found at least 10 thing he loved - they gave us samples of everything! Ended up with a loaf of bread, a few slices of wild game with herbs and seasonings and some hazelnut Toblerone. I took a slice of ham potato pizza - yum! Made for an excellent meal on the go. If we had more time in this town we would of bought more and made dinner. Excellent service (we don't speak Italian) and made custom packages for us.

Yelp
Inside Volpetti, it's like a rugby scrum with food. Elbows fly, people jostle and box out for position, but patience and persistence are rewarded. This is take-out, Italian style. I went back to the rental with a nice Barberesco, a pane grano, three cheeses: a Bel Paese, a Gorgonzola Dulce, and a Pannerone Lodigiano, a torta rustica stuffed with mortadella and peperoncino and a mystery cheese, a calzone stuffed with spinach, broccoli, proscuitto, and yet another mystery cheese, and finally a berry crostata for dessert. All were fantastic! We didn't save any money, but it was a great eat-in meal!

Yelp
Amazing selection of cheeses, meats and so much more. Staff is extremely knowledgeable and many have perfect english. Shopping here is interactive, with tastings of all sorts of things and offer personalized treats based on your preferences. If I lived here I would go every day!

Yelp
This little shop has been featured in several foodie magazines, and it deserves all the hype it is getting! The shop has a wide selection of meat and cheeses with some wine, bread, and a handful of delicious balsamic vinaigrettes. The owner and employees are very friendly and doled out free samples to my wife and me. We ended up getting some spectacular prosciutto but the salami we sampled was some of the best I've ever tried. Visiting this place is a must if you are a foodie! Be warned, the prices are rather high but the quality is top notch!

Yelp
Black truffle cheese and fresh focaccia bread. All I need to say. And of course a lovely owner who was willing to give us samples. This is a must stop.

Yelp
Awesome grocery in Testaccio. Tons of fresh meats, cheeses, baked goods, pizza, dried figs, sweets, rustic pies, olive oils, pasta, Greek yogurt, wines - you name it. The men working there are more then happy to share their knowledge of meats and cheeses with you. And they make the most divine sandwiches. My favorite was always melanzane, prosciutto, and mozzarella di bufala on any of their homemade breads. If you show some fluency in Italian, they seemed more inclined to help you out and give you free samples. I asked for a small mix of cheeses and probably walked out with 10 euros worth of free food. My heart goes out to you, Roberto.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and get over to Volpetti. At first, it seemed daunting because it's full of Italians who take what they do so seriously (and rightfully so!) and we were just a couple of Americans who don't really know much about cured meats. But we asked for help from one of them women working there, and she was able to cut us up some awesome cheese and meat and deli items. When she rung us up, I was expecting to spend 50 euros and guess what I paid? 11 euros. It was insane. And so delicious. We took it and ate it in the park. Perfect.

Yelp
OH MY GOD! Wonderful. I purchased the best best best (!!!) proscuitto I've ever tasted at Volpetti, along with all sorts of other gorgeous treats on my last visit to Rome. And if I have my way I'll purchase more on my next trip. A cool thing about visiting this wonderful old fashioned shop that's filled to the rafters with Italian delicacies is that they love offering free samples to their customers. Wow. It's a brilliant sales strategy (or at least was in my case) because I ended up buying a few items I wouldn't have even thought about. A foodie friend who lives in Rome told me about Volpetti. As much as he loves Rome, this shop was really the only thing that he enthusiastically recommended visiting. I took his advice to go; you should to!
google avatar

Yelp
No other deli can compete with one of Roma's most recommended stops. After dinner at Volpetti Piu, we stopped into this amazing little store full of sights and scents of Italian goodness. Everyone greeted us in English and fawned over our daughter so she was loving the attention. We were offered samples of cheese, salami and bread. We ended up buying lots of salami which later served as our go-to snack for the rest of our trip in Italy. Not to be missed!
google avatar

Ralph K.

Yelp
This is a perfect Italian market - top notch meats, cheeses, and sauces here. Highest quality. Authentic atmosphere. Lots of locals. Famous! Sample some old vinegars here.
google avatar

Greg S.

Yelp
What an awesome gourmet food shop! You can find a huge selection of cheeses, meats, vinegars and pre-made dishes. And the staff, most excellent helpers. They offer endless samples enticing even the most reserved customer. Even if you're not shopping for anything specific, you must check out this store!

Joanne N.

Yelp
This is a culinary gold mind . A heaven for foodies looking for special delicacies to try and take home must do a Balsamic vinegar tasting. Before you buy. 5 yr, 10 yr, 15 yr and 25 yr balsamic vinegar are available. Oh so good! They also carry truffle oils, and salts, Olive oils, chocolates dark and light and so much more! Be sure you allow enough time to discover all the hidden goodies in this establishment. You won't be sorry.
google avatar

Joe P.

Yelp
Awesome grocery. Went in to check it out after dinner at Volpetti Piu and ended up spending €83 on recuerdos for people back home. The guy was super friendly and one hell of a cross seller. Chocolates and pistachio cookies turned into pecorino cheese, acrtaia dodi balsamic vinegar since 1891 and a pistachio nougat log. Buonissimo!
google avatar

Lewis W.

Yelp
Amazing selection of cheeses, meat, torta rustica, bread, wine, etc. Everything delicious and they will pack things beautifully for your travels.

Vera A.

Yelp
This was one of the most wonderful experiences we had in Rome! Alessandro helped us get everything we needed for a picnic - even uncorking the wine, slicing the meat, cheese, and bread, wrapping it all up for us in a cooler, and calling us a cab! The meat, cheese, wine, and bread he helped us pick out were incredible - but Alessandro and the customer service made our picnic one of our favorite memories in Rome. We were so grateful, and will definitely be back when in Rome again.
google avatar

Prachee M.

Yelp
Hands down the best store we visited in Rome - this was one of the stops on our Eating Italy tour and we were told that when the store opened 8-10 years ago it was the first of its kind. They carry hundreds of kinds of cheeses and cured meats, wine, balsamic, jams, preserves and spices. We sampled 8, 10 and 12 year old balsamics from Modena and pecorino and moscato. It was with a great deal of self control that I managed to walk away with only 1 bottle of balsamic. They bubble wrap wines and liquids and vacuum wrap cheeses. This is a must visit if you are a foodie visiting Rome. They also have a pizza store close by.
google avatar

Kelvin S.

Yelp
Pretty much heaven for any lover of delis or traditional cured meat preparation. The server was very patient, as we were not fluent in Italian, and gave a bunch of samples. We ended up walking out with more food than we intended on getting.
google avatar

Ben N.

Yelp
bought 250 worth of meet and cheeses. frankly don't really know what we got. all based on recommendation of a lady staff who was really nice to have us taste all the stuff we bought. also they will have it vacuum packed for u with a small fee i think. please also ignore anyone saying u can't bring it out of Italy. had no issue getting it out.
google avatar

Raf B.

Yelp
Lucked out that this gem was a block from my AirBNB stay in Testaccio. Super friendly staff, some English speaking as a bonus., offering samples of an incredible selection of Italian specialties. The white truffle salami was a high point. I spent way too much on my car picnic for the trip to Umbria!!
google avatar

Jay L.

Yelp
Went there to buy ingredients for Pasta carbonara, and they had an amazing selection of food. Friendly folks too. I know that this is a foodie Mecca, but even if you are not cut of that cloth (and I am not), you should go there and grab some bufala and meat, and chow down!
google avatar

S S.

Yelp
A cheese shop for the ages. Just as much amazing cheese as hard-to-find cured meats. You WILL be satisfied. I guarantee it.
google avatar

Steve W.

Yelp
This was definitely the fanciest deli we visited in Italy. They have pretty much everything you can think of. The staff speak English and are uber helpful, giving advice, samples, etc. Keep in mind though that they are also basically salesmen. This store is a stop on some food tours, but we came by ourselves. This is basically a higher quality, higher price establishment. My wife really enjoyed it and spent a lot more here than on food anywhere else on our trip.

Yelp
Any one with recent experiences bringing cured meat into the US from Italy? Checked the Dept of Agriculture web site and it was fairly ambiguous. Particularly interested in whether they will confiscate culatello from Parma.
google avatar

Virginia S.

Yelp
Ah, Volpetti I think about you often. I live in NYC and the closest we have is DiPalo's on Grand Street. 1997 was my first time in Volpetti's. I'd done some research and came across a NYT article on Volpetti. I saved the article and as my husband, 2 friends & I perused the goodies in the cafeteria like shop next door to the main food store I had the article in my hand. We speak a little Italian and the man behind the counter asked me about he article. I told him what it was and a couple of minutes later a tall, handsome, well dressed man approached our table. He introduced himself as a Volpetti grandson, pulled up a chair & sat down with us. He asked if he might take the NYT article and make a copy. I, of course, said yes. He went away and returned a few minutes later with the article and a tray full of oils, cheeses and other goodies. He sat with us told us about each of the items he had brought us, at no charge, to sample. We were wowed! Americans who certainly were not 'regular' customers why would they treat us so grandly. Ever since, every time we are in Roma we always stop in to eat & then load up on the outrageously delicious goodies in the food store. I will always smile every time I think of Volpetti's. Go across the Tiber to Testaccio. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
one of the pitstops on our food tour today. this place was amazing...all the finest artisan italian food you want to eat, from cheeses to meats, olive oils, olives, balsamic, etc, etc. claudio was a delight and gave us tastings of various bitto cheeses, olive oils and balsamic. i wanted to buy so much but realized that i can't stuff everything in my suitcase, so i refrained.

Yelp
My favorite food store in Rome! Gracious and family-run with delicious deli meats, cheeses, bread, prepared food, and wine. The owner proudly showed me his first English-language review. All the staff were welcoming, professional, and more than happy to sample anything you are considering buying. Highly recommended!
