"Perhaps his most important contribution to the local restaurant industry was Italian restaurant chain Salvatore Scallopini. Bongiovanni founded the original restaurant in 1982 in Madison Heights and went on to open many more locations throughout metro Detroit and a location in Indianapolis. The restaurants served traditional American Italian fare and became mainstays in the communities where they opened." - Brenna Houck

I was floored when I saw the size of our to go dessert. I even asked about it and they said that’s how they cut it now. I call BS. It was literally 1/2 the portion when we dine-in.

My boyfriend and I used to love to come here. This was our place. The food was the best. The atmosphere was great and the service was amazing. We had the most awkward experience tonight. The food just sucked. Bad vibe. Wont be going back.

I felt like the menu was intentionally deceptive. It says in bold at the top "Homemade Pasta". We went in specifically for this, expecting the pasta to be made in-house, only to be told that it's box pasta and that "homemade" means "build your own". The server seemed irritated at me when i said that it felt misleading, and she said it was 'my own interpretation'. I tried to explain that "homemade" implies from scratch, or housemade...not build-your-own. But, either way, it feels quite pricey for box pasta. Also, the salad was DRIPPING in dressing, completely saturated. The main dish was good, and there was lots of parking which is awesome! but I don't think I'll be returning. Also, their phone system doesn't work (I had tried to call to make a reservation and it hung up on me twice and the third time said the entry was invalid).

disappointed--haven't been here in years--we always had fond memories of the place--decided to stop today--place is pretty--food is good--prices are fair--problem was we had a surly waitress--never smiled or said hello or thank you--going out to us means a 'happy time'--guess we will try their other locations in the future......

Excellent dinner. We had the Shrimp Scallipini 🍤 and Tiramisu for dessert😋 I highly recommend those items. We had an amazing meal time experience. My father discovered this place in the 80s. It has always been a delightful dining experience 😘 Thank you

Just tried to eat here, 16 Nov 2024 at 7:00 PM. The restaurant was full so the hostess put us on the list, I was standing next to her and could see that the list didn’t have any other names on it. The hostess then asked us to go wait outside so we didn’t clog up the entranceway. She took our number, and I pointed out the window at my car and said “We will be in that car!” It was a little weird to ask us to leave the restaurant to wait, but whatever, we played along. While sitting in our car with a view through the restaurant window, we watched two parties come in. Both were immediately seated. Between these couples coming in, we watched the hostess talk to another restaurant employee (manager maybe?) and point at our car. While walking one of the couples to their table, the hostess looked at us in our car and made eye contact with us. We then walked in the restaurant. Without saying a word to the hostess, she said to us “Did you ignore my call?” We watched her the entire time while we were waiting, she didn’t attempt to call. She just sat the couples that walked in and completely ignored us because it was easier. Then, once we came in, she tried to tell us it was our fault. Even if we didn’t answer her call, she knew exactly where we were, no attempt was made to wave us in or come get us. To be fair, the food looked good and restaurant smelled amazing. Your hostess, however, is a liar. We just left and went to another Italian restaurant.

We got 3 kids meal, lasagna and a ceaser salad with chicken. I paid $80 and not a single person finished their meal. The food is awful. The meat in the lasagna tasted like it was 3 days old. The dressing of the salad was under whelming. Th kids spaghetti, mac and cheese and chicken tenders when blane. Salt and pepper didn't help at all. This was our first and last experience there. The staff was great, so no complaints there. The atmosphere was basic, nothing unique. My only reason for no returning is the quality of the food which says a lot considering the main thing my 7 year old like to ear is chicken nuggets and he didn't even want them.

Google
I was excited to try their food after seeing them celebrating 40 years, pics in the review and having 4 stars…unfortunately that was the opposite of our experience. Food was overpriced and not good. The lasagna wasn’t very good, the chicken in the salad was soggy. The salad was loaded with tomato. Minestrone soup tasted like a vegetable medley soup. Chicken mushroom Marsala was good according to my guest. One of the waitresses were super nice, unfortunately our waitress (giving her the benefit of the doubt) was having a bad day. The red sauce they serve with the bread was good. Bread was ok. The best thing there is the Romano dressing. They don’t have ranch but the Romano was just as good. Very clean inside, but small. Cute outdoor patio seating.

Yelp
I Uber eats the order and I would have the say the portion size was absolutely perfect! In addition, I absolutely loved the taste of the food!

Kelly W.

Yelp
We don't live by the restaurant any longer but make the trip down there several times a month!! We love it!

Grace B.

Yelp
I went here expecting that it would taste like home-cooked Italian food. I thought wrong. The food is below average. I ordered calamari it was extremely fried definitely Americanized Italian. The chicken marsala I ordered was covered in garlic, and that was the only taste I could get. The bread was served cold. The way they could make this place better is not overloading the food with garlic and giving it the flavor that it deserves. if i'm, ordering marsala chicken, i expect to get a hint of wine not a garlic clove the entire time. waitress was nice, but I won't be back there.

Yelp
Amazing Italian food. Be prepared for leftovers! We've come here a bunch of times (before and after the Salvatore in downtown Birmingham changed) to get various different Italian dishes. I usually get the same thing of the Chicken Pollo (pretty much chicken alfredo) but my wife has gotten a few different things on top of the Pollo, including ravioli and chicken parmesan. The Minestrone soup though, is something that we've not been able to find anywhere else. A thick, chowder-like soup packed with vegetables. Service is always really speedy, we receive plenty of bread throughout, and the wine select pairs really well with the dishes we've had. Salvatore is a great Italian restaurant that provides some really great service!

Yelp
Cozy atmosphere with attentive service. Food and portions were spot on. Desserts were decadent.

Matthew S.

Yelp
Terrible service. Poor food. Very expensive for the quality of food and service delivered. They seem to live off a reputation but dont show up every day to fulfill that reputation. Too bad.

Madelyne W.

Yelp
The restaurant itself is small and cozy. The service was pretty bad - we had to ask multiple times for the basics (bread and water) and she almost never checked on us. The food was great, for the most part. The bread was delicious. The tomato soup was chunky, not something I'm used to, but still great. My date got the shrimp scampi and loved it. I got the Chicken Tosca. The chicken and sauce were great, but the side of pasta had been left under the heat lamp too long so it was dry and mealy. I'd prefer to try something different if I were to return.

Yelp
When i'm craving classic italian fare with an emphasis on quality, i always go to Salvatore's! A convenient spot for metro Detroiters, this place should not be overlooked! The ambiance is classy, but not snooty, and always clean. This is a great place to come on a date, or with family. My favorite is the eggplant parm. between that and their top-notch pasta there are definitely some great options for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. Of course, the wait staff always has impeccable service and is happy to make recommendations. you can tell they love serving great food, and they do a great job of it!

Lauralyn C.

Yelp
We've been dining here for years, and it's my favorite go to for Italian. I'm Italian and cook homemade... But when I'm too tired I go here. It's not the best, nothing compares to homemade... but they have great soups, fresh hot bread, and we order pasta Fresca EVERY TIME. You can't go wrong with that!!

Sue P.

Yelp
I don't know why I always forget that this little place is here. My daughter and I stopped last night and had a nice dinner here. Everything was perfect and we plan to return again soon.

Yelp
Good, basic Italian food. Good place to go with friends and family to catch up. Service was good. Very good cocktail!

Gary M.

Yelp
I Love their Chicken with whit's wine and lemon sauce! The side of spaghetti is great too ! You will never leave hungry or disappointed Been goin to Salvatore Scallopini's for over 30 years

Yelp
I love this place. The staff are so friendly and the food is delicious! The outdoor dining area is an added bonus to the dining experience.

Renee B.

Yelp
Great food! Great service! Food portions are generous and delicious. Highly recommend!

MICHAEL R.

Yelp
Just had some good food here but if you go, do not get here at 8pm even tho they close at 9. They had the music off by 8:30 and the bar lights off by 8:45 making half of the place dark and of course the rustle and bustle of a staff focused on getting the f**k out as close to 9pm as possible along with the nice(not) smell of cleaning solution that smacked us as we finished our food at 8:50pm. So while the service was efficient and the food good, do yourself a favor don't go here past 7pm because its not a comfortable relaxing dining experience. They should say they close at 8:30pm.

Alexis F.

Yelp
Our food was sosososoooo amazing like honestly. Waitress was super friendly. Cute atmosphere. Awesome!

Ross N.

Yelp
Great Italian food. Consistently delicious! Have been going to this place for dine in or carry out since they first opened their Madison Heights location!

Morgan H.

Yelp
Always the best food. Been going here for years and it's always amazing. The fettuccine Alfredo is my favorite. Make sure not to fill up on bread

Bob L.

Yelp
Great food, love it. BUT...every take out order ends up missing something, which I discover as I sit down to eat. This has happened 4 or the last five times. I am detecting a pattern. From now on, We will be emptying the bag and checking all items, before I pay. After that, there will be NO after that...

Halee J.

Yelp
Love the food here . It never disappoints. I've tried multiple dishes and it's always great . It's also a nice cozy restaurant with great ambiance

Donna M.

Yelp
We had Salvatore Scallopini cater our management meeting this week for lunch and evening activities and everything was delicious! Staff was delightful to work with from ordering to delivery and set up to tear down. Highly recommend!

Dawn B.

Yelp
Came in tonight to have a nice bday dinner. We were seated immediately and had an amazing server, Isabelle. She was very attentive and took great care of us. The food was delicious. Everything was fresh and hot. I also had a chocolate martini and it hit the spot

Karl L.

Yelp
I've loved the Salvatore family restaurants for 30 years. The food is consistently delicious and the service has always been outstanding. In our busy world we almost always use takeout but the restaurant is clean and comfortable. From the garlic bread and meatballs, to the pasta and sauces, they are authentic and a great find.

Denise E.

Yelp
A very pleasant surprise! Very pleasing decor. The wait staff was extremely pleasant and attentive. A glass of wine was a very generous pour. The salad that came with my dinner was really very delicious, crisp, and the creamy Italian dressing was absolutely delicious. My husband's Caesar salad was perfect and the croutons were House made and they were delicious. My main course of chicken Tosca was very plentiful, cooked perfectly and delicious. My husband's veal dish according to him, was really really good. When you sit down you get a basket of bread, bottle of olive oil and a plate of their Arrabiata sauce, which is heaven! The only thing I can say in a negative way is the bread should be heated up. That is a pet peeve of mine in any restaurant I go to. It doesn't take much to put the bread in the oven for three minutes. We will be back again, it was a very delightful and delicious experience.

Lynn G.

Yelp
I use to go here all the time, but then stopped going here for no apparent reason. Yesterday we were in the area so we decided to drop in for lunch. I'm not sure when this started, but they offer gluten free pasta options. It was a pleasant surprise because not a lot of places do so. Obviously it wouldn't be safe for anyone with celiacs to eat here because of cross contamination, but that's not my case, I thought the pasta with meat sauce was a pretty decent dish as well as a good size portion. I would definitely go back. Reason for only 4 stars is because I thought its a little pricey, but yet again you pay for what you get.

Daniel W.

Yelp
cheap and good italian. good service. a go to date spot for when i was in high school. love it here!

Vicki H.

Yelp
Had a very unpleasant experience last night. The food was just inedible and didn't taste like it normal does. Not sure if there is a new chef but it was just gross. Our server was also rude and just seemed liked she didn't even want to be there. Everything was just a huge ask and she didn't want to wait on us.

Jamie T.

Yelp
We were a group of 8 just looking for a place to eat dinner after a family funeral. I understand they couldn't seat us all at the same table and that was fine but they could have told us before ordering that they wouldn't split the bill. Veal piccata was bland, watery, had no capers, and over a whole bulb of garlic. I'll be safe from vampires for at least a month! The cannoli filling was almost a pudding texture. The bread was good though.

Vernon B.

Yelp
Our go to place for Italian. Always great food and service without the pretentiousness. When I'm there, I have a chance to make my own bread dip by combining olive oil, balsamic vinegar and pepper... just a perfect taste combination for me. Both house-made salad dressings (Italian and creamy Parmesan) are superb. Every dish we've had here was nothing but excellent. You will not be disappointed with any of the delicious dishes they serve. Go and enjoy a good Italian meal with folks that treat you like family.

Eli I.

Yelp
Not a fan, came here on a Saturday afternoon service was find food was not, let's start with the good the salad was tasty the creamy white sauce and parm that came with it was good also the bread was ok nothing to write home about. The main dish I ordered was the eggplant Parm not good at all it was a bit cold but I was willing to look past that the eggplant was bland little to no flavor the pasta it came with was the same cold and no flavor and guess what ...... the sauce was the same bland and cold. I believe in second chances and will come back sometime in the future and order something else but for now 3/10 do not recommend.

Yelp
Went here for the first time in many years, 21 to be exact. This was the place my wife and I went on our first date, back when it had no liquor license. It was good then, but with so many new restaurants to try in the area, we just never thought to try it. That was a mistake. The restaurant is still charming. The decor is comfortable and not overwhelming. The staff incredibly friendly. We had the grilled octopus to start...incredibly yummy!!! My wife had the salmon which was perfectly cooked and delicious. I had the veal parmigiana. $18.00 and delicious!! This would, and does, cost 4 times as much at other restaurants in town. The side pasta was the only downer, tasty sauce but very watery. We split the apple cobbler dessert which was really great. My wife had some wine and me a coke. All this for a great price. We will definitely be back as this is a really nice place, with awesome food, friendly staff, at a great price!!! A true gem in Birmingham!!

Marv K.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place!. We come from Livonia just to eat here. The food is excellent and the service is too. The Pepperone with Italian sausage or chicken is our favorite. The Fettuccine alfredo is also very good. I could just eat the bread(or garlic bread) and soup and be very satisfied.

Anne P.

Yelp
I love this place. Unpretentious good Italian food. Wait staff attentive, ambience is like being in Nona's kitchen. Much different than the one in Birmingham (and better, IMO). Dinner was eggplant for me and pasta for my friends and we were all happy. Plenty leftover so easy to share if you're not that hungry.

Tim M.

Yelp
Usually a good place to go this time not so much. I hope this was the exception not the new rule. We ordered food to go, as is normal, but this time we were terribly disappointed. My wife ordered "Chicken Alfredo" that came with flavorless watered down sauce and chicken that was over-cooked and dry on the outside and still raw inside. My Beef Medallions were ok sauce was good meat just slightly over temp. I'm in no rush rush to go back but will probably give it another shot down the road.

Lee B.

Yelp
We ordered from here for the first time and everything was absolutely delicious!! We got the caeser salad, fettuccine Alfredo, a side of mushrooms, a basil pasta dish that we upgraded to gnocchi, and tiramisu. There wasn't one bad thing. The portion size was a little on the smaller side but thank goodness for that or we would've eaten way too much

Michael P.

Yelp
I have eaten here several times because it is right around the corner from my house. Overall it is decent, nothing really that stands out but they have a nice menu, good variety and some homemade pastas which is really nice. Given that they have some pasta from scratch this is enough to push me over to 4 out of 5. Homemade pasta, decent prices and good service it is a good safe bet. Full bar also.

Tim G.

Yelp
Used to be good. Now, after 2 recent attempts, it just bland, over priced food. I feel like I would be better off at Olive Garden.

Danielle N.

Yelp
Cannelloni with alfredo was really good! Alfredo sauce was thick with a creamy flavor. I got the sugo on the side. First of, my mom and I were shocked to even see sugo on a menu because we've never seen it on a menu, and we're Italian. So that was cool. However I wasn't a fan of it. Tasted like tomato soup to me. I guess I'm just spoiled with my grandparents recipe lol. Overall, I will come back!

Adam V.

Yelp
Service: Great Food: Spot on with the flavor, however I was tempted to have them put my lasagna in the nuke as it only had a little heat to it. The calamari was a touch dry leaving it slightly chewy. Other than that I believe this is a legit Italian restaurants with flavorful recipes. I would recommend this place to others. Bathrooms: Clean Timing: Perfect Price: Moderate Overall great experience, I would recommend keep in the food on the grill/in the oven a tad longer.

Craig P.

Yelp
Ah yes, Salvatore Scallopini. But I remember it as The Nugget. It was 1977 and I had to get a work permit from school to get a job here. Busboy. Just like my 4 older brothers had done. Busboy and work up to a cook. I put in a year and a half here. Cooking eggs and pancakes on weekend shifts and some midnights too. They had some very fresh food for a diner. My brother met his first wife here. Glad the building is still here. I worked for the owners that started Salvatore Scaloppini. Nice people, and guess what? Italian of course. Enjoy your meal here. I did for many years after my shift.

Dean V.

Yelp
This is my favorite local Italian restaurant. I probably eat here a couple times a month. What I like: free crusty bread with dipping sauce, booze (beer, wine and cocktails), quick service, and consistently good meals. My favorite dish is the chicken cacciatore. I recently tried the eggplant Parmesan and it was excellent. My only gripe is that there is a high turnover rate with the waitstaff; however the service is consistently good.

Scott R.

Yelp
My wife and I went here on our first date 14 years ago and still keep going. Salvatore's make their homemade noodles right in the restaurant before your very eyes if you are lucky enough to be there at the right time. If a small authentic Italian restaurant is your thing, you will love it.

Renee S.

Yelp
Tried this place out because its close to home. The bread and tomato soup is amazing, but my chicken parmesan was really chewy, the noodles tasted like they were old and reheated and the pop was flat. My husband got a different chicken and only had a few bites because he didn't care for it. I really wanted to love this place because Italian is my favorite, and its close to home. Maybe the cook just had a bad day because a few friends reccomend this place and saud it was great.

Riley N.

Yelp
I came here with my partner for the very first time in my entire life. Never heard of this place before. We came here on a Saturday evening, around 5:30 pm. It was... eh, decently busy, and kind of loud. There were 3 waitresses working (at least from what I could see). We were sat at our table almost immediately and our waitress came just as quickly. Unfortunately, I don't remember her name, but she was absolutely fantastic. Really nice, funny, and her service skills were on point. She offered to bag up our complimentary bread for us since we wanted to get the garlic bread with cheese. Very thoughtful. I ordered the "pasta special" with tomato basil soup. And for the life of me, I cannot even remember what said special was called. It had penne pasta, a basil and pine nut pesto, jumbo shrimp, portobello mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes. Both the soup and pasta were absolutely impeccable. The only reason that I'm not giving this awesome place 5 stars is due to the lack of room patrons have to move around. It's extremely cramped. But other than that, I'd recommend it!

Trish P.

Yelp
This place is awesome! The food is excellent and service is probably the best I've had in a very long time. Shout out to Pam , she's an awesome server!

Tamara Y.

Yelp
Simply put, we've never had a bad meal here. My hubby always gets the chicken parmigiana. A few minutes after our order is placed, you can hear the sound of the chicken breast being whapped by the meat mallet. Very edifying. I don't think I've ever had the same thing twice. The tutto di mare is very good, as is the gnocchi. If you're not feeling like pasta, the veal is very good, and the filletto Diana is simply fabulous. I appreciate the fact that you can get anchovies on the Caesar salad, just like the good Lord intended. They bring you bread and marinara sauce when you first arrive. The marinara is stone cold, which, frankly, is a bit weird. If you ask the waitress to warm the marinara for you, it gets much much better. Aside from stone cold marinara dipping sauce, my only other complaint is that the service is completely hit or miss. We have a favorite waitress who never disappoints, but anyone other than her is a complete crap shoot.

Regina G.

Yelp
While the place is cute, and the menu looks amazing, unfortunately, the food sometimes disappoints. I kinda like the Pasta pollo divano, but its just chicken strip mushroom alfredo really.. the noodles tend to get over done quite a bit, which kinda turns it in to a gloppy mess you have to cut into chunks/globs with your fork to eat. No fork twirling in this pasta. Flavor is decent. The salad I have real issues with. First of all, not everyone likes Italian dressing, and the creamy Romano is about the most boring shit dressing ever..and it doesn't hide the unwashed salad taste away either. :( I guess if you're in the area and starving to death, and don't want one of the 25 options for fast food, then yes, go here. but there are way too many good Italian joints out there to call this one good or authentic. Sorry, Salvatore /Gloppy

Sam B.

Yelp
This is my favorite place for Italian food. I love coming here for date night or meals with friends and visiting family. The fresh bread and sauce you start with is half the reason to come. It's difficult not to fill up on. I always think I'm going to order something different, but I almost always get either the chicken Alfredo or the ravioli. I love the calamari appetizer. It's a good sharing portion and so good. The decor is so cute and the servers are always very nice and attentive. There used to be some dish with chicken topped with prosciutto and garlic wine sauce on the menu. They are always very happy to make it for my parents who come here just for that.
