The 7 Best Hostels in San Francisco (Updated 2025)

"Close to the pier and a short walk from Fisherman’s Wharf, I appreciated Samesun’s spacious private rooms and smaller dorms, many with balconies and all with ensuite bathrooms, and the rare perk of free parking in on-site garages; the main downside is the lack of a real common area for meeting people, though they plan to remodel and add more common spaces and a kitchen." - Matthew Kepnes

Great hostel overall - clean rooms (and the privacy curtains are a great touch!) + it's centrally located. The parking lot is a huge perk too. The breakfast is pretty basic and there is no real kitchen (just a microwave) but otherwise it's a great place.

I absolutely loved staying here. I booked a room with balcony overlooking the street and was beautiful atmosphere of the city. Very affordable and clean. Definitely will want to come back here when looking for a place in the city! And the front desk I didn't catch her name, she was very polite and professional.

+ Nice location close to the ocean. - From the moment I walked into the room, something felt off. There was a strange smell I couldn’t quite place at first—until I looked under the bed and found three sweaty, smelly T-shirts left behind by previous guests. A closer look showed the carpet hadn’t been cleaned properly either, with used bandages and other bits of trash still on the floor. The staff experience wasn’t much better. I’ve stayed here twice, and both times there were issues. On my first stay, I waited 25 minutes at check-in with nobody at the front desk. When I eventually rang the bell, the receptionist scolded me for interrupting his lunch break. After a transatlantic flight and 20 hours of travel, that’s hardly the kind of welcome you hope for. On my second visit, I raised the issue of the dirty room and was promised a 10% refund—but nothing ever came through. I don’t want to sound like a Karen, but honestly, basic cleanliness and decent customer service shouldn’t be too much to expect.

Stayed at Samesun San Francisco after my Yosemite trip and overall had a great experience. I was able to drop my bags in the luggage room before check-in, which made it easy to explore the city right away. The room was clean and comfortable, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The location on Lombard Street is excellent—close to Fisherman’s Wharf and just a short ride to the Golden Gate Bridge. The hostel felt safe and well-managed, which I really appreciated. The only downside was the Wi-Fi—it was difficult to connect during my stay. Aside from that, I’d still recommend Samesun for anyone visiting San Francisco.

We had a room with a private bathroom and we were very satisfied. The front desk staff were friendly and informative. The breakfast is quite good offering oatmeal, cereal, yoghurt, coffee, milk, juice. There's free parking and in the event of it being full there's free public parking 10 minutes away on foot.

I stayed in a shared room for 3 days. Room was clean. Since it is located in a quieter street, having the room opposite to the street wasn't that much of a problem. Only on the last day, there was some noise. Staff is friendly. Breakfast is okay, do not have high expectations from it. Busses are at 5-10mins walkable distance. There are few restaurants nearby.

Great location, I had heard stories about San Francisco being somewhat scary in areas and didn't experience that here;) My absolute favorite part was the gal at the front desk, as an early riser I really got to know her in the mornings and witnessed her have to deal with a wild guest! She did it with grace and patience. It's crazy to read some reviews about the smell outside. Welcome to a major city people;)
